Our History

M

ary Lillian Duke Biddle (1887-1960) was born in Durham, NC, the daughter of Benjamin and Sarah Duke. She graduated from Trinity College, later named Duke University in honor of her grandfather, Washington Duke.

Mrs. Biddle developed an appreciation for the importance of philanthropy from her father, who was the guiding hand behind many of the Duke family’s charitable activities. Duke University, in particular, flourished in its early days thanks to the financial backing of her grandfather, father, and Uncle James B. Duke, who were successful entrepreneurs as well as philanthropists.

In September 1956, she established The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation.

Mrs. Biddle directed that at least one-half of the foundation’s grants be made to Duke University and identified three churches as institutions important to her. Otherwise, she was intentionally broad in her directions to future trustees on how and where to distribute grants.

Mrs. Biddle valued the input and wisdom of her friends and trusted advisors, and, from the beginning, the foundation’s Board of Trustees has included family and non-family members. The foundation continues her practice of actively engaging members of the community to serve as trustees. Currently, the board is comprised of three family and four non-family members.

Mrs. Biddle’s vision for current and purposeful giving drives the work of the foundation’s trustees and staff.

Message from Ben Jones, Chair In 2022, the board and staff of The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation undertook a discovery process to determine how we could best support nonprofit organizations in the Triangle area. We did this because we wanted to better gauge the foundation’s impact on the communities we serve. But being more plain-spoken people, the board really just asked the simple question: “Are we making a difference?”

Amazingly that simple question turned out not to be so simple. To answer, we needed also to answer the question, “what difference are we trying to make?” In other words, we needed to define clearly what we are trying to achieve here. As the well-known author and business speaker Simon Sinek would say, we needed to know the Foundation’s “why.”

I must admit that initially, I did not relish the prospect of doing this exploratory work. In my career, I have had several opportunities to go through explorations of the “why” of a company and its branding.

Sometimes it can feel like a waste of time. But I should have known better that this would not be the case at MDBF. Our board members, along with our excellent Executive Director, dove into the process with joy and curiosity. We ended each session with more clarity and a growing sense of how we could be a stronger funding partner to nonprofits.

Our modern evolution started after the 2012 death of Mary Duke Biddle Trent Semans, our matriarch, a founding trustee, daughter of Mary Duke Biddle, and my grandmother. With Mary Semans’ passing, the Foundation’s board at that time faced fundamental questions: who are we now? Are we continuing the founder’s legacy or forging a new path?

With courage, the board at that time took bold action to refocus the Foundation’s efforts. They defined core areas of interest and concentrated the Foundation’s giving to our beloved Triangle area. Now we stand on their shoulders and want to build from their framework.

In our first session together, we identified three key elements of our “why”: • We re-committed to being a family foundation. We confirmed that this is an essential part of our identity. I was surprised to hear from our community board members that they felt that this connection was critical to our mission. MDBF’s origins stemmed from the Duke family and Semans family legacies.

• We re-committed to concentrating our efforts within the Triangle community with the desire to increase our impact here.

• We re-committed to early-stage funding for new organizations on the front lines of their communities. Early-stage funding was a passion for Mary and Jim Semans. In the Foundation’s beginning, they were proud to provide cash grants as small as $300 because they wanted to encourage new, developing nonprofits. Some of those earlier beneficiaries have now grown into quite substantial organizations.

MDBF’s WHY We are a family foundation with a goal to help people in the Triangle live better lives and realize their potential through arts and education. We support our nonprofit partners to build and develop their effectiveness, pursue innovation, and launch initiatives.

MDBF’s HOW We provide a spark to propel K-12 and arts organizations to realize their potential and create measurable momentum.

Turning to the “how,” our board was strongly aligned that we wanted deeper engagement with nonprofits and we wanted to be more accessible. As a small example of how we put this into action, in 2022 we switched from requiring our grantees provide us with written reports to having check-in conversations. Recognizing that nonprofit leaders are busy people, we thought “let’s just get on the phone and talk with them about how things are going.” This new process is easier for the beneficiaries, and it is much more fulfilling for us to meet them and hear about the great work they are doing.

The “why” and “how” statements that emerged from the board’s work together in 2022 are a natural progression that makes sense for the Foundation going forward. We will continue to fund nonprofit operations rather than projects. We will make fewer grants, but this will allow us to provide more substantial resources to those we do support. We want to deepen our relationships with the nonprofits through greater collaboration. We hope to level the playing field and work with them in the ways they most need it. We will become even more user-friendly in our grant processes. We want to become a vital and accessible partner in their success.

I am grateful for our staff. Mimi O’Brien, Executive Director, and Kathy Harrison, Executive Assistant, have done an outstanding job of engaging the board, improving our grant processes, and connecting with nonprofits both inside and outside the office. We have realized that in order to spend more time meeting with and getting to know Triangle nonprofits, we need to increase our capacity, so we will add a new staff person within the next year.

Finally, I am so fortunate to work with such caring and dedicated board members. What we have here is rare in my experience. We are a fully engaged, working board. We come to our board roles with our sleeves rolled up, ready to pitch in. We are fully aligned in our belief that what we do here at The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation makes a difference to our communities.

Grantmaking Overview

awards most of our grants through three programs: the Arts, K-12 Education, and Duke University. In addition, in 2022 we also made grants to respond to the continuing impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and to support other efforts that connect with our history and broader nonprofit sector interests. Some grants are multi-year while others are for one year. The graphics below depict new grants approved and total funds paid by program, including payments on grants awarded in previous years.

Duke Arts, Arts & Health at Duke Hospital, the Duke Gardens, and five Arts units and departments within Trinity College–Art, Art History, and Visual Studies, Cinematic Arts, Dance, Music, and Theater Studies. In addition to these areas, we have long made an annual grant for scholarships in the School of Medicine. In 2022, we began a multi-year grant to support Duke’s pre-K-12 tutoring programs in Durham, through the Office of Durham and Community Affairs.

Mrs. Biddle directed that half of grant funds be given to Duke University, which we do through an annual proposal process. For decades, most of the Duke awards have gone to the Arts: the Nasher Museum of Art,

When viewed by program, Duke University is our largest funding program. However, when viewed by focus area, the Arts receive the most support, reflecting our belief that they are essential for strong, vibrant communities. Awards to Triangle-based arts organizations combined with grants to Duke for the Arts account for 48% of 2022 new grants.

CEDING POWER, The Triangle Capacity-Building Network SEEDING CHANGE Aims for a More Equitable Future

I

n the early 2010s, as the nation was slowly emerging from the 2008 economic downturn, the Triangle was home to two of the fastest growing cities in the country – Raleigh and Durham.

Change had arrived steadily for both cities over the preceding few years in the form of new homes, stores, restaurants, music venues, and civic structures, as well as redeveloped historic buildings put to fresh use. But while these and other NC cities were enjoying growth and renewal well ahead of much of the country, the state’s nonprofits struggled to shake off the effects of the Great Recession. A 2014 report by the NC Center for Nonprofits titled “Essential: Our State’s Nonprofit Sector Is a Vital Economic Engine” showed that in that year alone, “78% of North Carolina nonprofits experienced an increase in demand for services, but 60% were unable to meet the demands.”

Nonprofits facing fewer available dollars and increased demand for services during periods of economic upheaval was not a new problem. The sudden collapse of a Raleigh-based nonprofit during this time, however, prompted several grantmakers to come together and ask why they had not seen the collapse coming. That meeting formed the footing for what became the Triangle Capacity-Building Network (TCBN), a group that worked over the next few years to research nonprofits’ capacity-building needs and develop a funding strategy. Along the way they recognized a related opportunity to educate themselves about how to better support nonprofits’ financial health and resiliency, including the practices that keep the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors in a perpetual power imbalance and work against making positive change.

In 2018, five funders – Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC Foundation, The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, Oak Foundation, John Rex Endowment, and Triangle Community Foundation—all contributed to a pooled fund to make grants to nonprofits led by and serving people of color for capacity-building projects and to develop education efforts.

Sharing power is a key TCBN value, and they incorporated participatory grantmaking from the start.

They formed an advisory committee comprised of people of color working in the nonprofit arena to serve as the grant review and decision panel. Distribution of TCBN’s first grants in 2019 under this model marked a major shift in philanthropic practice, as did funders adapting to the very work they’d long asked of

nonprofits—to collaborate. As TCBN was exploring new ways to better meet nonprofits’ needs, the COVID-19 pandemic ushered in a sweeping public health emergency that upended the human service landscape.

TCBN organized a listening session in April 2020 for its funded partners to find out what they needed in the rapidly changing environment. For Mimi O’Brien, MDBF’s Executive Director, this moment stands out.

She had spent nearly three decades in fundraising and foundation work, navigating relationships in the philanthropic arena. “I was accustomed to the traditional model of philanthropy, where rules established by funders were accepted by nonprofit leaders,” she said. “During the session, I recognized a shift in the dialogue,” as nonprofit leaders candidly illuminated the hard realities they faced with restricted funding. They appealed to the gathered funders to trust them to know best how to deploy unrestricted funding to serve their communities, at any time, but especially in a time of crisis when quick adaptation to emerging needs was critical. O’Brien checked her impulse to speak, instead heeding the voices calling for change and honoring the risk these leaders were taking.

Following this pivotal meeting, O’Brien said she reflected on the experience and considered her own power to bring about change. The two guiding questions that formed in her mind were, “What is our responsibility here and how does Biddle need to change?” As members of the TCBN reconvened to discuss the experience, it was clear the other funders had been occupied by similar questions.

The group set about reworking its approach, one that would seek deeper relationships with nonprofit leaders, relationships built on trust and shared power.

They scrapped the planned Request for Proposals focused on project support and instead developed an unrestricted operating support grant opportunity.

Within the year, TCBN grew to include the Fidelity Charitable Trustees Initiative, and the Network nearly doubled the pool of funding and increased the number of supported nonprofits by threefold. Through 2022, TCBN has made 66 grants totaling $752,000 to BIPOC-led organizations. TCBN also provides training opportunities for financial and leadership development. To date, 83 board and staff members have attended the Board Boot Camp offered by the Executive Service Corps, 109 participants have gone

through the Nonprofit Management Institute run by the NC Center for Nonprofits, 20 organizations have engaged in peer learning groups, and several have gone through the Leadership Triangle program.

As part of its education program, the Network gathered nonprofits and funders from across the Triangle in early 2020 for a Nonprofit Finance Fund workshop on full-cost funding. This concept accounts for the multiple costs beyond direct service delivery that nonprofits require to survive and thrive. O’Brien remembers the moment when one of the nonprofit leaders she’d invited stood up and said, “This is blowing my mind.” Nonprofit leaders were realizing that they had the right to operate as businesses.

Funders recognized they needed to think differently about how they provided support.

She recently had been hired as the first Executive Director for Equity Before Birth (EBB) a newlyestablished nonprofit serving Durham, Orange, Wake, Johnston, and Chatham counties that “centers Black families and provides support to eliminate financial barriers they may experience while seeking pregnancy-related care.” Growing up in poverty, she notes, did not prepare her for fundraising. “I did not have financial agency when I started this position. I needed that. It was affirming.”

Launching a nonprofit during a pandemic made for a particularly challenging first year. She remembers the mass exodus of women from the workforce and the closures of schools and child care facilities, noting “every mama essentially had a financial need.

And here we came on the scene saying we’re going to eliminate barriers to taking care of your kids and having this baby.” EBB’s waiting list immediately jumped to about 50 moms. She laughs as she says, “Yeah, we hit the ground running… downhill.”

Spencer, having spent a lifetime forging a way out of no way, was undaunted. She knew she needed to hire staff, upgrade technology, rent office space, establish written policies and procedures, start collecting data,

and plan for a host of other operational activities. She applied for and was awarded several capacity building grants in early 2021. “The unrestricted capacitybuilding funds were our saving grace,” she says. With these grants and two major donations, Spencer was able to start striking items off her lengthy list.

EBB now has office space within ReCity, a co-working space for mission-driven organizations billed as “the Bull City’s hub for social impact.” EBB is co-located with H.E.A.R.T.S.—also a TCBN partner—that serves teen moms. Although the two agencies have distinct missions, they serve some mutual clients. Spencer uses this as an example of one of the impracticalities of short-term, program-focused grants, saying that funders can too easily mistake the common areas of work across nonprofits as duplication, which can foster competition.

She also notes the impracticality of measuring shortterm impacts when working to address complicated social issues. Spencer knows data can be useful and necessary but offers the reminder that success cannot always be quantified in a quarterly report.

Sitting in the afternoon light of one of ReCity’s large windows, Spencer observes that relationships require trust and, above all, listening. “You aren’t going to capture our impact until you let us tell the story.”

American Ballet Theater Residency

D

uke’s Office of the Vice Provost of the Arts, in conjunction with Duke Performances and the Dance Department, partnered with American Ballet Theatre for a three-year residency.

This historic partnership, with support from The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation and the Jenny L. Semans Koortbojian Trust, brought the ABT Studio Company and visiting choreographer Stefanie Batten-Bland to Duke. This collaboration provided movement intensives with Duke and Durham dancers, a series of monthly professional development workshops (both in-person and virtual) for Durham Public School dance instructors, and an original piece created by Batten-Bland performed at Duke. This residency culminated in ABT’s main company dancing a five-performance engagement of Giselle at the Durham Performing Arts Center, including a free matinee for approximately 700 K-12 Durham public school students.

James D. Semans Memorial Grant

H

abitat for Humanity of Durham’s program “Aging in Place” helps older adults remain in their homes safely, independently, and comfortably. Habitat completes home repairs and modifications specific to each homeowner’s lifestyle making their home safe, secure, and accessible. In addition, Habitat partners with local health care professionals and community service providers to help older adults get the holistic care they need to stay in their communities.

This grant was made in memory of James D. Semans, trustee, family member, and friend.

lthough the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic had abated in calendar year 2022, the consequences of the pandemic persisted across our communities. Many families still faced uncertainty regarding work, health, housing, and the ability to meet basic needs.

Arts organizations and artists continued to struggle, with audiences and ticket sales well below pre-pandemic levels.

COMMUNITY RELIEF GRANTS $290,000 PAID

The Mary Duke Biddle Foundation remains humbled by nonprofit staffs’ dedication and perseverance. To help organizations meet their missions, MDBF awarded $225,000 in operating support to organizations that offer emergency relief to individuals and families in need. Although this is an area outside of our established grant programs, the Board of Trustees considered it essential that we continue to help our neighbors. We also awarded $65,000 to area arts nonprofits and arts councils to help their continued recovery.
