ying on the eastern edge of Indiana is the city of Richmond, just a stone’s throw from the Ohio border. It was one of the birthplaces of jazz music in the U.S. and the Wright brothers spent a few years of their early life in the area.

A primary healthcare presence in the city is Reid Health, which had its original facility built in 1905. Work on a new facility began in 2004 and a new hospital opened its doors in 2008. Reid Health provides services to eight counties (six in Indiana and two in Ohio) with a total population of approximately 280,000 people.

Medical equipment management is handled by the TRIMEDX/Reid Health Clinical Engineering Team. The CE team is made up of nine members.

“The clinical engineering team at Reid Health consists of both Reid Health employees and TRIMEDX associates. The team of nine people manages medical devices at the hospital and at 40 off-site locations,” says John Short, TRIMEDX senior site manager.

He says that the group’s specially trained technicians are assigned to unique departments including surgery, radiology, lab and general biomed devices.

“The main campus of Reid Health is in Richmond, Indiana, and has more than 220 beds. This includes beds for mother and baby, the emergency room and other departments. Reid Health has satellite locations in Eastern Indiana and Western Ohio,” Short says.

The team works hand-in-hand with its IT counterparts.

“We are physically located in the IT department and share space with the service desk. TRIMEDX makes it a priority to ensure IT and clinical engineering teams are working together closely, since our responsibilities will continue to overlap as more medical devices become network connected. Our clinical engineering team and the IT team prioritize cybersecurity for all our devices,” Short says.

IV PUMP MAKEOVER The team recently took on a large IV pump project. It also has been active in allocating space as workspace to allow for new device installations, as well as expanding its imaging service responsibilities.

“Special projects within this department are just starting to gain momentum. We are newly engaged in dialysis services and have a technician making promising strides in imaging. We have started taking over the imaging at the off-site locations and are having great success. Both areas present strong potential for growth, and we anticipate continued development and training as we expand our capabilities,” Short says.

He says the team is excited to also take on several new responsibilities.

“We are preparing for several high-volume device exchanges and are currently setting up the appropriate space for the vendors to work. This preparation requires close collaboration with the team and other health system staff to locate workspace in a busy hospital where space is always at a premium,” Short says.

The team was tasked with switching out over 1,200 IV

pumps in May (2025).

“This special project will require a tremendous amount of coordination, teamwork and attention to detail. The team will be responsible for locating and inventorying all existing pumps throughout the hospital to ensure proper trade-in credit. Then, they’ll photograph, tag, and enter each new pump into the database. What sets our team apart is their ability to work efficiently and collaboratively, often stepping in to help each other when large tasks like these arise,” Short adds.

The CE team members are also adept when putting on their detective hats and working collaboratively to find a solution.

“Recently, a department manager brought in a machine that wasn’t booting to the correct screen. There were about five of us in the shop at the time and, without hesitation, everyone dropped what they were working on to lend a hand. Each team member contributed ideas and drew from their experience to troubleshoot the issue,” Short says.

He says that while the machine ultimately required an engine replacement, it was great to see how quickly the team came together with an instant desire to find a solution.

Short says that away from work several members of the team are involved in the Indiana Biomedical Society (IBS).

The TRIMEDX/Reid Health CE team has proven itself up to the job and keeps medical devices at this midwestern healthcare system ready to meet the needs of clinicians and patients.

ilitary biomeds most often come well-prepared for a civilian biomed position. Many of those military biomeds learned about the occupation from a recruiter.

“I joined the Army on October 14, 2010. I knew I wanted to work in the medical field but just wasn’t sure what job I wanted to take on. The recruiter told me about biomed being a good job that I qualified for that deals with repairing medical equipment.

So, I took a chance and I ended up liking it ever since,” says Jamal Guio, CBET, CHTM, CLSS, biomed technician in the HTM department at UT Southwestern

Medical Center, Clements University Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

Guio received his initial biomed training in the military.

“I graduated from the Department of Defense Biomed Training Program in (what is now called) Joint Base San Antonio, Texas at the Medical Education and Training Campus (METC) in August of 2012. This is a 44-week training program to provide skills training for BMET personnel to include clinical applications, operation, inspection, maintenance and modification of a wide array of biomedical equipment systems used in fixed and mobile medical and dental treatment facilities,” he says.

Guio’s areas of specialty include Philips PICiX telemetry and patient monitors, ventilators and PrisMax CRRT/TPE machines.

He has held a number of positions during his military years and as a civilian.

“In the military I’ve come a long way into many different positions: bench repair technician at a depot warehouse, field service technician supporting Army units across the U.S. and other countries, shop foreman as a sergeant and a shop lead as a staff sergeant,” Guio says.

He says that as a civilian, he worked his way from a biomed tech 1 to 3.

“Andrea Brainard gave me my first opportunity to work as a biomed in Children’s Hospital in Dallas, Texas. I enjoyed the seven years of working there and it gave me a feeling of positivity as a technician. Servicing equipment that helps children was the overall best feeling I’ve had in a healthcare setting,” Guio says.

ANALYSIS AND ACTION Above and beyond the more routine duties that biomeds encounter on a daily basis are those larger projects and

Guio has experience with these challenges from the military and civilian sides of the profession.

“I successfully led a $1.5 million project overseeing the installation of 80 Getinge Servo-U ventilators, collaborating closely with the respiratory team to ensure a flawless one-for-one swap and the proper preparation of the old units for return to the manufacturer. Despite facing transportation delays from the manufacturer, we surpassed the estimated man-hours, prompting an extension of workdays to stay on schedule and meet the project deadline,” he says.

Guio says that through meticulous planning and coordination; he and colleagues ensured all equipment was accounted for and the project was executed seamlessly.

“This experience also honed my communication skills, as I provided daily updates on everything from performance metrics to start/finish times, ensuring clear and continuous communication between the HTM management team, the Respiratory department and the project management lead,” he adds.

Another challenging experience presented itself when Guio was in the Army.

Guio says that as a biomedical staff sergeant, he took charge of leading the maintenance shop at a combat support hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, ensuring efficient operations in a high-pressure environment.

“During the deployment, I identified numerous critical issues that required prompt attention, including parts ordering and ensuring equipment readiness. I developed a comprehensive three-month action plan to address over 40 devices that were missing from the CMMS inventory, improved equipment readiness by over 25 percent by tackling overdue preventative maintenance, and successfully ordered necessary parts,” he says.

Guio also created a forecast for upcoming PMs over the next six months.

“By the end of the plan, I achieved a 90 percent success rate in meeting the objectives set by the hospital commander,

ensuring equipment was fully prepared and operational for our mission. This experience was successful mostly due to my understanding of SWOT analysis and my experience of leading a maintenance shop,” he says.

When not on the job, Guio enjoys video games.

“I enjoy most multiplayer online games with friends.

Shooting at the gun range is cool for mental stress as well,” he says.

The attention to details with work and projects have produced some recognition, including the UT Southwestern Support Services Award, the Healthcare Technology Management Association-North Texas (HTMA-NTX) Rising Star Award and the Military Outstanding Voluntary Service Medal.

The accomplishments just go to show the many benefits of getting experience as an HTM professional in military and civilian environments.

The Matrix movies have been my favorite. Science fiction and fantasy movies are my favorite genre for the creativity it takes to make them.

FAVORITE FOOD:

Korean BBQ is my absolute favorite food and Waffle House is probably my go to for a quick meal of breakfast that I can enjoy without a worry of a long wait time.

FAVORITE PART OF BEING A BIOMED? Being able to make a difference in people’s care by maintaining equipment. I would say getting appreciated by the patients for the work we do helps keep me focused on the importance of my job.

hose who took metal shop or woodshop, welding or auto shop in school often pursue a career in a trade. While these courses had been on the wane during the past two decades, they have reappeared under career and technical education (CTE) in many districts.

Those comfortable with working with their hands often got their first taste of working with wood or metal in a shop class and that includes Keith Hall, director of service, imaging, Western USA at RENOVO Solutions.

“I first became interested in woodworking in junior high.

When I was much younger, I enjoyed disassembling pretty much anything I could get my hands on, and then reassembling it. Woodworking gave me an outlet to create unique things from raw materials,” Hall says.

He adds that the first skills he learned were using lathes 18 TechNation | July 2025

and the tools used to shape wood.

“These oversized chisels can be quite dangerous and my shop teacher spent considerable time demonstrating how to safely use them. This is a skill that I instantly felt connected to, and that I have honed over time. Today, one of my favorite things to do is turning a raw log or chunk of wood into whatever shape speaks to me; sometimes it’s a vase, sometimes it’s a bowl, and, on occasion, it’s therapeutic to simply turn the log into a pile of shavings,” Hall says.

He refers to this as a “Zen” activity, which allows him to reflect, organize his thoughts and find perspective on any issues that may be bothering him.

What tools are necessary to engage in woodworking as a hobby?

“At its root, woodworking can be simply defined as cutting wood from its natural form and reassembling the cut pieces to create a new object. If we assume this definition to be true, then woodworking at any scale ‘could’ be accomplished with a mallet, a hand saw, a chisel, and a working surface like a bench,” Hall says.

He says that these are the primary requirements, however, it becomes more convenient when you add power tools such as a random orbit sander, drill(s), table saw, miter saw, band saw, track saw (his personal favorite), planer, jointer, dust collector, vacuum, router table/hand held router, CNC, laser engraver, and many, many more.

Hall says that you can’t forget the safety equipment as well.

“I always wear eye protection, ear protection and run an air cleaner when I’m working in the shop. It’s easy to become complacent and it only takes a momentary error to lose part of your finger (Don’t ask me how I know), or damage your lungs or eyes, or worse”, he says.

Many woodworkers describe the hobby as therapeutic and Hall is no exception and says it is a benefit he gets from the hobby.

“I like the idea that something I created may still be around long after I’m gone. Akin to nearly all hobbies, this endeavor can be as simple or extensive as your heart desires. It’s possible to enjoy woodworking with only the basic hand tools.

It’s also possible to spend tens of thousands of dollars to own every tool imaginable and to spend thousands more on a fancy workshop and exotic or specialty wood,” Hall says.

He says that he believes that he strikes a happy balance between cost and benefit.

“I rarely take on paid projects for others; I find that it dampens the enjoyment of the process. It’s not as enjoyable to be on a timeline or to be held to specifications for a project. I much prefer to build what I want to build, when and how I want to build it,” Hall adds.

When Hall joined the Army, he left woodworking behind for over 20 years. He eventually returned to the pastime.

“I have always had a love for creating new things from raw materials. During my 20+ years in the Army, it wasn’t practical to own my own woodworking tools (at least not the large ones like a lathe, bandsaw, table saw, or CNC). Upon retirement from the Army, I found myself sitting at a desk most days and my hands felt idle,” Hall says.

The yearning to work with his hands and build things returned.

“I enjoy digitally designing a project in CAD and bringing those plans to life in the workshop. My wife casually mentioned that she was looking for a table for her office, so that she could put a coffee maker on it. This prompted me to make her a custom table, with a custom logo, sealed in epoxy resin,” he says.

MAPPING A MAP One of Hall’s projects that has a lot of visibility is a map he did for his employer. The wooden map hangs on the wall of RENOVO’s corporate headquarters.

“The idea to create the map came from my visit to our national headquarters in Irvine, California. It’s a beautiful space with our logo hanging on the walls in various ways throughout. I thought it would be nice if we could display where all of our customer sites are, using push pins. Maybe different colors for different regions. I mulled over a few ideas and shared them

with leadership to get their buy in and we settled on a plan,” Hall says.

He says that to begin the project, he first built a map of the United States in CAD software and scaled it to the size he needed.

“Using my CNC machine, I cut out a test of the map and made minor corrections. Once I was satisfied with the result, I loaded the chosen piece of wood and masked the entire piece with special masking material so that when the machine made the cuts, I could paint the whole thing black. Now that the raw map had been cut out, I removed the masking and only the lines between the states were colored black,” Hall says.

To make the frame, he built a shadowbox frame for the map to sit in (recessed) and cut a groove around the entire frame so that he could recess LED strip lighting.

“I knew that mounting this large, heavy piece on the wall could be challenging, so when I built the frame, I included a French cleat on the back and the marrying French cleat was packaged and shipped with the frame. I mounted the map into the back of the frame, applied the strip lights and sent photos for final approval. The leadership team blessed the piece, so I carefully wrapped and packaged it and shipped it to headquarters,” Hall says.

With the mounting hardware in place, all that was needed at the headquarters was to install and level half the French cleat to the wall.

“Then, the entire frame slid down into place and is held very securely,” Hall adds.

In addition to woodworking, Hall is also involved in blacksmithing, laser engraving and 3-D printing. He is clearly a person who likes to work with his hands.

On the job, Hall is director of service, imaging, Western USA at RENOVO Solutions.

“I enjoy engaging with imaging service engineers and traveling to customer sites for in-person visits just as much as I enjoy developing national strategic service plans and participating on several internal and external HTM committees,” he says.

From knowledge of X-ray tubes to shaping wooden blocks and so much more, Keith Hall is a man who likes to work with his hands and understands others who do the same.

In Memoriam - Steve Cannon

S

teve Cannon, 68, passed away May 11, 2025. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force and worked in healthcare for 45 years. When he wasn’t working, he loved to ride his motorcycle and work on his farm. He is survived by his wife, Becky Cannon; son, Preston Cannon; daughter, Amber (Steven) Guarino; and four grandchildren – Phoenix, Rocco, Allie, and Vinny.

Dave Francoeur, president of medical equipment service at Downtime Trace, shared news of Steve’s passing with colleagues in a heartfelt email.

“It is with a heavy heart that I let you know our dear friend Steve Cannon passed away on May 11, 2025. His loss is felt deeply by all of us who were lucky enough to know him,” Francoeur wrote. “Steve was more than a colleague or a friend – he was a true companion, a confidant, and a constant source of light. His kindness, his humor, and the genuine care he brought to every relationship left a lasting impact on all of us. I will forever cherish the memories we shared and carry his spirit with me.”

“Words can’t fully express the influence Steve had on my life – both personally and professionally. He challenged me to think more deeply about who I am and how I contribute to the growth of others. He reminded me that writing isn’t just a task – it’s a powerful way to communicate intent and shape how others see us,” he continued.

“Steve was an incredible sounding board. He listened, offered feedback, and helped me shape ideas that I believed could change the professional world we live in. He was supportive, but never afraid to offer a reality check – and always encouraged me to push beyond what felt comfortable,” Francoeur added.

Steve enjoyed a long and distinguished career in the healthcare technology and the asset management industry. He held executive leadership positions at Sun Health and Premier, one of the nation’s largest GPOs. He served as the inaugural president at AllParts Medical, and held executive leadership roles at Aramark, Philips Healthcare, Sodexo and Althea U.S. MD Publishing President and Founder John Krieg says the world lost a leader and gentleman who inspired everyone he met.

“Having known Steve for over 25 years, it is easy to see the 20 TechNation | July 2025

love and outpouring of support for him and his family. His presence was felt immediately when he entered a room. He was a man of great strength, morals and fiercely loyal. His handshake is all you needed to know about the quality of the man he was,” Krieg said. “He was a pillar in our industry, someone who helped forge the path for so many great people and companies. He touched lives in more ways than one could count, anyone who spent time with him was better off, and he will be deeply missed.”

Tim Riehm, executive vice president with U.S. Medical Equipment Consultants Inc. (USMEDIC), first met Steve in 2002 and soon thereafter moved to North Carolina where the two men worked together to create an Aramark training center.

“Steve was very detail focused and always put 100% into everything he did. There were no short answers when you asked Steve a question. He always provided a well thought out and super detailed response because he truly cared,” Riehm said.

Lexicon MedParts CEO Scott Kinkade also first met Steve in the early 2000s.

“The first time I met Steve was in 2003 when he was a vice president at Aramark and I was a sales rep for ReMedPar calling on Aramark,” Kinkade said. “I had the privilege of working for Steve two different times. The first time was in 2006 when AllParts Medical was founded and the second time was in 2018 at Althea. Both times were a blessing and I learned a great deal from a great man.”

Tri-Imaging Senior Vice President of Business Development Wanda Legate met Steve when he was the president of Aramark.

“Steve was a great person and would help anyone in need of help or guidance,” Legate said. “Steve will be missed by all. I personally will miss the text messages with songs and words of wisdom.”

“Steve was a man among men. He was a great friend and I will miss him dearly. Some people in our lives will never be replaced, but their presence never leaves us either,” Trust Medical President Chad Fowlkes said. “I hope to give love and offer friendship like Steve did. I am truly blessed to have had him in my life. He will be greatly missed!”

Rick Staab, CHTM, met Steve when he was with AllParts and then Aramark.

“I will always remember how open Steve was with me and honest about the industry and his thoughts,” Staab said. “I will also always think kindly about Steve and images that include motorcycles, cows, and big equipment at his farm.”

Eric Wright, CEO and co-founder at Tri-Imaging Solutions met Steve in 2009 when he became president of AllParts Medical.

“The thing I remember most about Steve is how he could control a room and a meeting. When Steve spoke, the room became quiet and people focused on him,” Wright said. “One thing that Steve said multiple times that I will always remember is, ‘Hope is not a strategy.’ ” “Steve and I traveled together during our time at AllParts, and we shared many dinners and rounds of golf,” Wright added. “He was always someone I enjoyed being around, and I will cherish the conversations we shared, both professionally and personally.”

“I met Steve Cannon for the first time at an AMSP meeting that was being held at AllParts just following the Phillips acquisition in 2011,” AMSP Business Operation Manager John Snyder said.

“Being his generous self, Steve allowed us have our meeting at his facility. I will always remember how professionally he carried From Steve’s wife Becky Cannon.

FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS Steve was a lot of things to a lot of people – husband, dad, brother, papaw, uncle, and friend.

But to all of us, he was simply The Boss.

Not just because he spent his life leading big companies, but because he had a presence you couldn’t miss, a voice you listened to, and a heart big enough to carry us all.

He loved the open road on his motorcycle. He wore his Native American heritage with pride.

He had a soft spot for farm overalls as he did the farm chores and the tree work.

He loved classic country music.

He’d never let you go without always saying yes to one more drink, a little more food, or building the fire just a little higher.

Steve had a giving soul. If you needed help, he was already there.

If you needed advice, he had it.

If you needed a friend, he showed up no matter how hard things were.

He loved me beyond measure. If I wished for something, Steve made it happen.

Snyder also shared examples of Steve’s unselfish nature and the impact he had on his career.

“Steve was a man of unique character and I’m forever grateful to him for what he did for me,” Snyder added.

Steve was a force in the HTM industry and, more importantly, a trusted friend to many.

“While Steve was initially a great leader and mentor to me it will always be his friendship that I cherished the most,” Riehm said.

“Steve was a cornerstone of the industry, well connected and respected by all. He always treated me like a little brother offering guidance and support with genuine kindness and a sincere desire to help,” Staab shared.

“Steve will always be remembered for his work in our industry.

However, I will remember him as a family-loving, Harley-riding, and farming man! He cherished his family the most, and my thoughts, prayers, and best wishes go out to Becky, Preston, and Amber,” Wright said.

Steve wasn’t a man of many apologies, but he showed his love and his gratitude in the only way he knew which was through action, loyalty, and showing up.

And he showed up for me always.

He adored our children, Amber and Preston, and extended that love without hesitation to Amber’s husband, Steven and Phoenix’s mother, Shannon.

He became that father figure – steady, generous, and fiercely protective – to everyone that was in his circle.

Our grandchildren – Phoenix, Rocco, Allie and Vinny were his pride and joy.

Steve wasn’t always easy – he was the boss, after all. But he loved fiercely and loyally.

And when you were part of his circle, you knew it.

So, if you knew Steve, I invite you to honor him in your own way.

Maybe with a ride down a winding road, a glass raised in the summer sun, a fire lit a little higher than usual, or even plant something in his memory.

Remember him when the wind blows just right and the sun warms your back.

That’s where he’ll be.

And just know, when we finally see him again, he will have his arms open and a list of stuff for you to do.

NEW MOBILE APP HELPS TECHNICIANS COMPLETE WORK ORDERS FASTER FSI, a leading healthcare CMMS, created for, and by, healthcare service professionals, has announced the launch of FSI Inbox, a new mobile app built on top of its industryleading application, CMS. Inbox offers a simplified mobile experience focused on helping technicians boost productivity related to work order completion.

Changing dynamics in the healthcare workforce requires a focus on building software tools that meet users within their requirements and drive efficiencies. The combination of an aging workforce and an influx of newer tech-savvy technicians mean that software tools need to accommodate both sets of users. In addition, these tools must help hospitals mitigate broader challenges like budget cuts and resource constraints by providing technology solutions that drive efficiency.

FSI Inbox serves as a companion app to Tech, FSI’s mobile application that provides full-service access to FSI’s CMMS. Upon logging into FSI Inbox, users see an email-like interface which gives them an option to sort work orders in a way that supports how they manage their day. With

minimal clicks, users can complete work orders, log time, and add any additional notes in seconds.

“Our customers often have less resources, which means they need to find opportunities to be more efficient,” said Shawn Hewitt, senior product manager, FSI. “And in doing less with less, our application needs to meet them at a place where they can focus on the work – meaning, using software that has fewer clicks, less time training, and more time doing. That was our goal in building FSI Inbox.”

In the months leading up to the release of Inbox, the FSI team met with several current customers as part of an early adopter program. The FSI product team utilized feedback to develop the final product, ensuring an easy-to-use tool that checked the boxes for technicians in the field.

“Inbox is FSI’s next step in simplifying the work order flow process for technicians, providing for faster data entry by the field technician while maintaining data integrity for leadership evaluation of KPI’s and benchmarking metrics,” said Paul Kitzmiller, facilities system analyst at Penn State Health.

“At the end of the day, it’s about much more than simplifying the interface – it’s about empowering technicians to focus on the work itself, not managing the software,” said Hewitt.

In recognition of his many years of service to the industry, Sloan received the award surrounded by several of his long-time friends.

IAMERS President Diana Upton noted: “Ed has created many successful businesses on his own, including ReMedPar and several others. What distinguishes Ed in addition to his great business accomplishments is his unwavering support of many former employees and others who ventured out on their own. At the IAMERS Educational Meeting, Sloan delivered a keynote on leadership. Sloan stressed the importance of looking out for everyone in the organization. His remarks were received with the audience standing to honor him.

In addition to his insights, members were treated to a strong presentation by Block Imaging Executive Vice President Mitch Foldi on best practices for parts reliability.

IAMERS General Counsel Rob Kerwin presented on contract tips to protect on potential price changes and delays in light of the President’s Executive Order on tariffs. David Aguiar of Cyclic Materials spoke on the new opportunity for recycling and recovering rare earth elements from the magnets in MRIs. Geoff Hunt, Crothall Vice President of Imaging Services; Jimmy Kallam, president of East Coast Medical; and Julie Mardikian, a quality auditor with Quality13485, engaged in a lively moderated discussion concerning “Trends and Challenges of Vendor Management.”

Finally, IAMERS concluded by conducting a program on the current state of play with topics including the tariffs under the new Executive Order, changes in U.S. healthcare leadership and updates on cybersecurity regulatory and legislative matters. As Medinnova Systems CEO Hiren Desai noted, “the annual meeting presentations were robust. The takeaways were excellent.”

ecure Mount began offering security solutions in 2004, when W.A. Foote Memorial Hospital (now Henry Ford Jackson Hospital) in Jackson, Michigan, asked for help in designing and producing products that would help them prevent the loss and damage to sensor probes on their patient monitoring devices.

Evidence Assessments Revamped CRI, a global nonprofit advancing evidence-based healthcare, has expanded offerings in its clinical evidence assessments (CEAs) to give healthcare providers, researchers, and payors an even more clear, at-a-glance view of the safety and effectiveness of healthcare interventions and treatments.

Using a rigorous but rapid evidence assessment process based in the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) methodology, ECRI researchers are continually evaluating a variety of emerging and trending topics in healthcare – from new wound care products and obesity treatments to AI-enabled medical devices and digital health innovations.

ECRI CEAs are unbiased reports that guide healthcare providers and payors to the most clinically superior options. The reports inform clinical quality improvement and patient safety initiatives. They also support evidence-based practice decisions by identifying the best available evidence to align with clinician expertise and patient preferences.

The assessments include a one-page summary that is meant to quickly inform decision makers of the state of the evidence around a product or intervention. This summary was recently expanded to add data visualization features, including patientoriented outcomes that are color-coded to align with ECRI’s top-line evidence rating. This illustrates ECRI’s confidence levels in the available clinical studies based on how they were designed and used to collect the pertinent outcomes data.

“Healthcare decision makers are inundated daily with new technologies making bold claims of clinical superiority and outcome improvement. They have very limited time to separate fact from fiction and make informed decisions,” says ECRI’s

AAMI UPDATE AI & Medical Imaging: Considering Opportunities and Challenges

othing grasps today’s media quite like artificial intelligence (AI) and its myriads of applications. When it comes to medical imaging, there are real productivity improvements to be seen from emerging AI capabilities in medical devices and software. There are also unique risks from integrating these features into medical imaging systems and the clinical environment at large. So, what does this paradigm say for the future of medical imaging?

What may a tech-savvy health IT or healthcare technology management (HTM) leader need to know when discussing the adoption of this technology with clinicians?

For medical imaging, artificial intelligence integration can mean rapid reading and analysis of medical images. AI features of devices currently on the market receive a patient’s scan and run it through a deep learning algorithm using a multilayer convolutional neural network. These algorithms extract characteristic features that define anatomical structures and potential abnormalities. Each feature is extracted at a different layer in the network. Based on these characteristics, the system then classifies the image as affected or unaffected by the specified condition. Along with this classification, many systems provide heat maps of affected areas, and probability of the results.

Processing X-ray images, CT scans, or MRI scans with a machine learning (ML) or AI algorithm for detection of specified abnormalities in the image, saves technologists abundances of time compared to manually reading each image. But just how trustworthy are the detecting capabilities of these systems?

Validation for AI models in medical imaging yields high sensitivity (meaning the ability to detect more subtle abnormalities with the potential for early diagnosis), which is sometimes higher than human reading. But does this sensitivity 34 TechNation | July 2025

directly translate to clinical use and safety?

Traversing the gap between what an AI model predicts, and what the optimal diagnosis, intervention and treatment is, is one of the most prominent challenges with using AI in medicine.

Use of these models is often projected to reduce radiologists’ increasing workload and address staffing issues. Furthermore, their high sensitivity implies more early detections of disease or conditions, combined with timely interventions, this can save lives. This could be the height of AI’s positive influence in healthcare.

But by the nature of machine learning, even the most technically complex and intentionally designed algorithms are only as intelligent as the data fed to it. Concerns are arising as to the accuracy of the data used to train these rapidly emerging tools. There is also cause for questioning of the size of the datasets used, their breadth, and depth. Do they account for all cases of disease? Do they account for how diseases may manifest differently in different patient demographics? If not, can any algorithm confidently advise a diagnosis?

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) are a class of machine learning models that generate new, synthetic data based on their training data. That is in this case, they create synthetic medical images. GANs may be used by researchers for training data when there is limited applicable data available.

That is to say, medical imaging AI features may now be developed based on synthetic medical images.

Training data validation is another major challenge raising reason for caution when considering the accuracy and safety of clinical use of AI. Image classification is just one application of ML technology in the clinical environment. But these models are quickly gaining popularity on the market. The FDA has approved thousands of medical devices leveraging AI. However, these systems only use locked algorithms, meaning the training of the algorithm takes place prior to implementation and stays the same until a new version is released. The FDA continues to enforce safety in AI-enabled medical devices.

Overall, AI’s potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, alleviate workloads, and increase early disease detection is groundbreaking. Still, its dependence on training data and lack of full clinical feasibility raises critical concerns about safety, reliability, and ethical implications.

As AI classification models continue to reach the clinical environment, the need for specified standards arises. AAMI TIR34971:2023 is the first document to address risk management of medical devices with artificial intelligence and machine learning components. The guidance essentially describes how to apply ISO 14971 to devices with AI and ML features. ISO 14971 more generally defines risk management of medical devices, including software and cybersecurity risks.

ISO/IEC 5259-2:2024 outlines a framework for managing the quality of the data used to train data supported decision-making models, notably AI and ML models. However, it does not specifically inform medical devices or use of AI in the clinical environment.

Overall, AI’s potential to enhance diagnostic accuracy, alleviate workloads, and increase early disease detection is groundbreaking. Still, its dependence on training data and lack of full clinical feasibility raises critical concerns about safety, reliability, and ethical implications. Because of these concerns, the future of AI in medical imaging will not be determined solely by its capabilities, but by the ethical and technical safeguards put in place to ensure it serves patients and staff safely and effectively. With all of this in mind, professionals must strike a unique balance between progress and caution.

BIOMED 101 Reasons & Tips for Branching Out

recently attended Phase 1 training by Dave Domanski at Radiological Service Training Institute (RSTI). I am here to share a bit about my experience and some of the reasons behind attending this two-week, Phase 1: Principals of Servicing Diagnostic X-ray Systems class.

A few years ago, I decided to branch away from biomed/anesthesia specialty to step into diagnostic ultrasound servicing. This ultimately led to me finding employment at Samsung where I was asked to join the ranks and train in digital radiography. Since April, I have flown to our HQ in Danvers for three separate weeks of training on a variety of our system-specific courses and, at the recommendation of our highly educated TSEs, got

approval to attend RSTI for Phase 1. One thing my mentors have taught me in my career is to never pass up a learning opportunity; when asked of course I said, “YES!” Leaving my comfort zone for new challenges is admittedly humbling, however, it is essential to growth.

It is my opinion that when you are learning a new modality it is important to know the “why” behind what we are servicing. The older generation of engineers is retiring and leaving less time for mentorship. This is resulting in many new techs coming into the essential roles servicing lifesaving equipment with a mere 3- to 5-day (system-specific) training class with very high expectations in the field to service the system they were trained as well as similar systems. If we are not fully grasping the “why” behind the tests we are performing, this leaves a critical issue. Knowing “why” aids in being able to ask the right questions to perform

a good analysis of issues. For me personally, I genuinely want to work with certainty that any adjustments I make to a system that I am servicing will have a positive impact on the people using them and being treated by them.

At RSTI, I was able to learn more in-depth about the history of radiography and to see the transition from film to CR to DR. Knowing this gives me have a greater appreciation for digital radiography (DR) and how much safer the technology has become over the years. We had the opportunity to work in lab groups and use many systems. We could walk the museum floor and physically see, touch and learn about various X-ray systems and their components. We also used different imaging analyzers that we may encounter in the field and methods for testing beam quality/quantity. It is funny because I had no idea how much I would be looking at the periodic table of elements, learning about Z numbers, and the reason we use certain elements over others. However, as the class progressed, I realized why it was so crucial. It sure took me back to physics and chemistry classes. I chuckled because when I was younger, I asked myself, “When will I ever use this in real life…” now here we are. We learned how X-rays are made within the tube and the different types of radiation as a result. I gained a better understanding of the effects of KV, mA, and time on the quality and quantity of X-rays. We learned about high-frequency generators and their positive impact on radiology. We explored the X-ray tube, and its materials and then we got to see the filaments light up and the anode spin in real time.

Dave taught us how about different stator types and how to ID what type is on your tube. We even learned how to check filaments using an old HV cable. We did several hands-on labs as a group using CR, DR, grids, and phantoms while making calculated adjustments of KV, MA, and time to see the effects of X-ray on image quality. We learned about how Increasing the SID (Source to Image Distance) affects the intensity of X-rays based on the Inverse Square Law (2XDistance = 25%Intensity). This class was crammed with information!

There was a level of engagement in our class that I had not seen in other classes I have attended. I believe this to be on behalf of Anne Morrison. She aided in getting our registration done with ease, coordinating such a welcoming stay at a nearby hotel that shuttled

us to and from class daily. She coordinated a team night out and created a simplified lodging/meal package that allowed us to all have lunch together at the training site. Our class boasted 25 students, we trained hard for two weeks and built relationships that will last a lifetime. I loved that our group got a chat going the Friday of the first week of class. We decided to open communication with one another for dinners, seeing the sights and study groups. I think by then we had got to know one another through class, labs, and our super fun student night out.

On the final night of class, some of us got together and ordered pizza at the hotel cafeteria and held a study group. We all gathered our leftover drinks and snacks from the hotel, we ate, and we quizzed each other – preparing to try and win a chicken. If you have ever been to an RSTI Training, you know how many bragging rights you get if you walk away with one of those little cluckers. I was very grateful for all the camaraderie that we had that night as our brains were already mush from the past two weeks. Ultimately our class of 25 had four chicken winners! I was not one of them, but I am still proud!

I find it important to understand radiology is a modality that if not serviced correctly can harm not only the user but the patient on the table. That is why attending classes like the one I attended, are so valuable. Each Instructor was extremely knowledgeable and ready to dive right into not only explaining but to show how it works in an easy way to interpret and recall. RSTI is quite an experience!

If you attend this two-week training course expect to be warmly welcomed, be well fed and to leave with so much more that you came with. RSTI offers a wide variety of classes throughout the year. While there, I walked the halls and enjoyed spotting so many that I have come to be friends with over the years lining the wall of graduates. It is quite inspiring. Do not sleep on building relationships with your classmates or squeezing in study sessions while there. The state of Ohio is beautiful, bring some good hiking boots and go explore!

STRYKER - CROSSFIRE Q: Can anybody help us, our Crossfire console has the error e43, does anyone know what it is due to and what I can do to fix it? Thanks.

A: This error generally indicates an RF generator fault or an internal hardware failure related to the energy output circuitry. It’s often associated with an overload, grounding issue, or a fault in the RF power module.

Steps to Troubleshoot and Possibly Fix Error E43: 1. Power Cycle the Console Turn off the unit.

Disconnect all accessories and probes.

Wait at least 30 seconds, then restart.

See if the error clears with no devices connected.

2. Inspect Handpieces and Cables A faulty or shorted handpiece/cable can trigger E43.

Try another working handpiece if available.

Inspect connectors for damage, bent pins, or debris.

3. Check Grounding Ensure the console is properly grounded via a 3-prong medical-grade power cord. If grounding is poor, RF feedback may trigger hardware protection circuits.

A: Stryker doesn’t release service documentation and doesn’t sell parts for these types of units. Give them a call and see what they say. It may be a flat rate repair. .

MOCOM - MILLENNIUM B

Q: Hi guys, if have a millennium B with a problem at the end of the cycle before ending, any ideas what to check. I have cleaned EV1-2-3-4 and the filters.

A: 1. Check the Drain Pump At the end of the cycle, the machine must remove residual water. Ensure the drain pump is operational (you should hear it activate). Check for blockages in the drain tubing or pump filter.

2. Check the Vacuum Pump & Drying Circuit If drying fails, the cycle may halt. Listen for vacuum pump activation. Inspect vacuum line filters, traps, and vacuum hoses for kinks or leaks. If your vacuum pump has a separate oil reservoir, ensure oil is at correct level and not contaminated.

3. Pressure/Temperature Sensor Issues A faulty pressure or temperature sensor can cause premature cycle termination. Check sensor calibration (if you have access to service mode or diagnostic logs).

Clean any scale build-up that might interfere with sensor function.

4. Check Error Codes in Service Menu If you’re getting a generic stop without an error message, go into the service menu to pull error logs.

Look for codes like: Err 05 (drain error), Err 07 (drying temp issue), Err 03 (sensor failure) 5. Chamber and Door Gasket Check that chamber is draining completely. Ensure door gasket is sealing properly — leaks here can cause vacuum/drying failure.

Q: WHAT ARE THE MOST COMMON SERVICE ISSUES YOU ENCOUNTER WITH INFUSION PUMPS IN YOUR FACILITY OR CLIENT NETWORK? BAKER: rate accuracy, occlusion errors, battery failures, physical damage and software issues.

KAYSER: The most common service issues are always related to physical damage to the devices. The damage is commonly caused by mishandling the device, such as patients or nurses dropping the pump or by someone poking the screen a bit too aggressively with their favorite ballpoint.

to wear and tear, device drops and mishandling, and normal component failure, either due to age or extended use of the device.

PHAN: Between the facilities and client networks, IPR Medical supports the most common service issues with infusion pumps which tend to fall into a few consistent categories. One is mechanical wear, such as problems with doors, buttons, and/or moving parts is a frequent concern with high-use devices. Two is alarm malfunctions and sensor-related errors, which can also disrupt clinical workflows and cause unnecessary device downtime.

Additionally, software inconsistencies or outdated firmware can lead to performance issues or integration challenges.

While the specifics may vary by brand or model, these general trends reflect the day-to-day realities of managing aging infusion pump fleets under heavy clinical use. Our role is to help facilities minimize downtime, maintain compliance, and extend the life of their equipment through reliable repair and service solutions.

WENETA: The most common service issues we encounter are failing pressure sensors, inconsistent flow rates due to worn out pump mechanisms and damaged keypads.

We also receive many units that have broken casing and cracked housing. Another issue is incompatible firmware causing connection issues.

Q: HOW HAS PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE FOR INFUSION PUMPS EVOLVED IN RECENT YEARS, AND WHAT BEST PRACTICES DO YOU RECOMMEND? BAKER: Diagnostics software tools have significantly improved, allowing the ability to detect and address issues earlier. Maintenance and PM software now help ensure that infusion pumps remain properly calibrated within their required intervals. Additionally, continuous updates provided by OEMs enhance device functionality and ensure compliance with the latest safety standards.

KAYSER: The biggest evolution we have seen is our ability to track repairs performed on each individual device over its lifetime in service with us. For example, if a pump needs

a mech replacement but our reporting shows the mech was replaced two times previously, we know to investigate in case there is a different cause for the defective mech. Our reporting is almost like CarFax, but for the medical devices we service.

MORGAN: Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are increasingly adopting proprietary preventative maintenance (PM) software solutions, a trend that presents both advantages and challenges within the biomedical field. When OEMs provide access to these tools for end users and third-party service organizations, the PM process is significantly streamlined, as the software is typically designed to follow the most efficient and effective maintenance protocols. However, when access to such proprietary software is restricted, it centralizes all PM activities through the OEM. This can create operational bottlenecks and substantially increase equipment downtime, ultimately impacting clinical workflows and patient care.

PHAN: Preventive maintenance for infusion pumps has come a long way in recent years. It used to be more reactive, something you’d do when a device started acting up or hit a calendar deadline. Now, with better tracking systems and more awareness around patient safety, it’s become a lot more proactive. At IPR Medical, we always recommend sticking to manufacturer guidelines, but we also encourage facilities to tailor their PM schedules based on how their devices are used. One pump might need servicing sooner than another depending on how often it’s being used. A few best practices we see working well include standardizing your PM checklists, keeping detailed records of every service, and rotating pumps through maintenance on a regular cycle and not just once a year. At the end of the day, good preventive maintenance isn’t just about compliance, it’s about keeping devices safe, reliable, and ready when patients need them most.

WENETA: We’re seeing increased use of PM tracking software and RFID trackers on units. These tools help find the units and provide an alert when the unit is due for PM. The best practices are recalibrating flow rates and pressure

sensors, documenting all PM steps digitally to ensure traceability and accountability.

Q: WHAT CHALLENGES DO YOU SEE WITH MANAGING SOFTWARE UPDATES AND SECURITY PATCHES ON NETWORKED INFUSION PUMPS? BAKER: Among third-party service providers, staying current with software updates and security patches can be challenging due to limited access to OEM support and proprietary tools. This can delay critical updates, increase cybersecurity risk, and make compliance with regulatory standards more difficult.

KAYSER: There are always challenges with all the different software and options for all types of medical equipment, including pumps. We do a very thorough job of recording the specific options and software each device comes into our facility with. This way, not only can we verify what that specific device was set to when we received it, but more importantly, we know exactly how to set it up when it is returned to the customer. When the customer sends in their next service device, it could be one we have not seen before. By documenting at the level we do, we now know what settings they prefer without asking the customer. We will certainly verify with the customer, but this eliminates a step for the customer and improves their overall service experience.

MORGAN: Some OEMs leverage software updates as a means to control access to the servicing of their equipment.

In these cases, OEMs are restricting third-party service providers and end users from obtaining necessary software updates, thereby limiting their ability to independently maintain or upgrade devices. This restriction becomes particularly problematic when a software version is rendered obsolete or subject to a recall. In such instances, healthcare providers may be forced to remove critical devices from service while awaiting OEM intervention, leading to potential disruptions in clinical operations and delays in patient care.

PHAN: One of the biggest challenges is just keeping up.

A lot of infusion pumps out there are still running on older platforms and getting them updated isn’t always as simple as clicking a button. There’s also the issue of scheduling, because these devices are in constant use, so finding the right time to take them out of circulation for updates without disrupting patient care is tricky. And then there’s cybersecurity, hospitals are more connected than ever, so any delay in patching can leave devices vulnerable. It really comes down to coordination between biomed, IT, clinical teams, and vendors. Everyone must be on the same page, 46 TechNation | July 2025

and that doesn’t always happen as smoothly as you’d hope.

That said, more hospitals are starting to treat medical device cybersecurity as part of their core IT strategy, which is a step in the right direction.

WENETA: The challenges we see are timing and coordination with vendors to assist with the software updates and security patches. Many of these devices require manual updates which are labor intensive and can cause delays.

Q: IN YOUR EXPERIENCE, WHAT ARE THE MOST CRITICAL SAFETY CHECKS HTM TEAMS SHOULD PRIORITIZE DURING ROUTINE INSPECTIONS AND REPAIRS? BAKER: Functionality and performance testing to ensure the equipment operates according to requirements. Electrical safety checks and cleanliness inspections.

KAYSER: Checking the motor/mech for full functionality is very important, but besides the obvious, verifying that the pump works on battery power is critical. Some devices have no obvious indicator that the battery is not working or, even worse, will power on with battery power but lose all motor function. If a pump has no backup power and then gets unplugged during an infusion that is no bueno. An extremely important step for our technicians and quality control is checking for function on exclusively battery power.

MORGAN: No single check should be considered more critical than another. Both OEM and FDA guidelines emphasize the importance of a comprehensive and systematic approach to preventative maintenance. Each step in the process plays an integral role in ensuring device safety, performance and regulatory compliance. Prioritizing certain steps over others can lead to oversight, increasing the risk of missed issues – particularly those that may initially appear minor but could compromise functionality or patient safety over time.

PHAN: First off, alarms and sensor accuracy are huge. If the air-in-line or occlusion sensors aren’t working right, that’s a serious patient safety risk. You want to make sure all the alarms are triggering when they should, not going off randomly, and not staying silent when they shouldn’t. Flow rate accuracy is another big one, even if it’s just a small drift over time, it can make a big difference in dosing, especially with critical meds. Lastly, battery health is another thing we see overlooked sometimes, but it’s super important, especially in facilities that move pumps around a lot or rely on them during transport. A weak battery can lead to

shutdowns at the worst times. And don’t forget the basics like power cord integrity, leak tests, and making sure the pump is physically in good shape, no cracked casings or loose parts.

WENETA: Safety checks should prioritize alarm functionality, occlusion detection, air-in-line sensor accuracy, and electrical safety testing. Calibration of flow rates is essential, as even slight variances can impact patient outcomes. It’s also critical to verify the integrity of all infusion pumps.

Q: WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH TECHNATION READERS REGARDING INFUSION PUMPS? BAKER: Infusion pumps are often easy to overlook due to their widespread use across multiple hospital departments, but they play a critical role in patient care. It’s essential that these devices are maintained to the highest standards of accuracy and reliability. Equally important is ensuring that both the clinical staff operating them and the technicians responsible for their repair are properly trained to support their safe and effective use.

Q: HOW ARE YOU ADDRESSING SUPPLY CHAIN OR PARTS AVAILABILITY CHALLENGES? BAKER: With the hurdles we’ve experienced, having qualified and ISO certified companies to purchase parts from has become instrumental in performing quality repairs and reducing down time from units being out of service.

KAYSER: Infusion pumps are the backbone of every hospital and are critical for the day-to-day operations. Most people have either been hooked up to a pump or know a friend or family member that has relied on one. It is very rewarding for me and our team to provide a quality service that is being used to take care of patients every day.

KAYSER: We use a bit of a brute force approach here at Adepto and buy, buy, buy. We try to stay extremely overstocked on all our important parts and devices. We rarely struggle to source parts we need.

MORGAN: There remains a clear and pressing need to advocate for the Right to Repair within the biomedical industry but keeping a focus on “Repairing Right.” OEM restrictions on service capability can prevent highly qualified third-party ISOs from providing support to customers, while lower-quality ISOs may circumvent restrictions and therefore fail to certify that their services meet OEM performance and safety standards. I believe OEMs should adopt a stance of granting parts and software access to “qualified” third-parties, but require that they meet minimum service standards such as ISO 13485 certification. This can greatly improve the experience for device users without compromising on patient safety.

MORGAN: At Renew Biomedical, we utilize high-quality aftermarket and refurbished parts as part of our service strategy. This approach provides greater flexibility in addressing supply chain disruptions and helps reduce equipment downtime while also offering cost-effective solutions for our customers without compromising the reliability or performance of the devices, thereby supporting both operational efficiency and budget-conscious healthcare delivery.

PHAN: At IPR Medical, we’ve had to get a lot more strategic. We’re stocking up on high-failure components and building stronger relationships with multiple suppliers so we’re not relying on just one source. And it’s also about communication. We’re upfront with our clients about lead times and keep them in the loop if there’s a delay. In some cases, we’ll offer loaner units or swap-outs to minimize downtime while we wait on a specific part. Honestly, it’s about being flexible and resourceful. The supply chain may not always cooperate, but we do everything we can to make sure our clients don’t feel the impact.

WENETA: We’ve built strategic relationships with both OEM and aftermarket suppliers. We’ve also stocked frequently used parts in-house to avoid delays. Where we can, we cross-reference compatible components across models to reduce dependency on single sources.

PHAN: If there’s one thing we’d say to your readers, it’s that the behind-the-scenes work HTM teams do to keep these pumps running – checking alarms, calibrating flow, swapping batteries, really matter. It keeps patients safe and helps the clinical side do their job without interruptions.

Also, don’t count out the older pumps. A lot of legacy gear still has life left in it if it’s maintained right. With good PM routines, stock inventory, and solid repair support, you can stretch the value of those devices way further than you’d think.

WENETA: Infusion pumps are some of the most widely used and one of the most important devices in a hospital and clinical setting. It is essential that these pumps are maintained through continuous PMs. Working with vendors and building trusting relationships is key to maintaining clinical efficiency.

Strategies for Supporting the CFO:

Delivering the Numbers

H

ealthcare systems have been tested repeatedly during the past decade with challenges that stretch budgets to their limits. The Affordable Care Act required hospitals to spend a substantial amount on the cost of compliance with regulations, stressing the often-fragile bottom line of hospitals.

Then, the pandemic filled many hospitals beyond capacity, requiring the allocation of additional space to treat COVID-19 patients, and pushing off more profitable surgeries for a later date. Many of these profits never materialized and hospitals found themselves operating in the red.

These challenges have been taxing to members of the C-suite in healthcare and, in particular, the CFOs who must utilize every tool in their tool bag to balance costs with care.

Their budgeting efforts often include commitments from department heads to slash budgets and find new efficiencies.

Sitting down with the CFO, HTM leaders can outline their plans to cut costs and make that person’s job easier. With some creative brainstorming and utilizing resources efficiently, HTM leadership can contribute toward the CFO’s goals and win praise and support from the C-suite in the process.

Alan Gresch, vice president of HTM consulting at Phoenix Data Systems in Southfield, Michigan, and Rob Bundick, director of HTM/biomedical engineering at ProHealth Care in Wisconsin, proposed a number of ideas for HTM leadership when they presented “Healthcare Finance 101” at the MD Expo New England in October of 2024. The presentation is available online at tinyurl.com/4msm224b HTM leaders should have a good relationship with their CFO and finance department. There are approaches to achieve this.

“Talk with them regularly. Learn what their biggest challenges are and how you and your team can help them overcome those challenges. Develop regular reports that show what you are doing to save time, save money, increase productivity and equipment uptime and availability,” Gresch says.

He says to leverage the data in the CMMS to help with effective and objective capital planning. Be aware of other areas related to technology management where there are opportunities to increase efficiency and reduce costs.

“Be willing to take on greater responsibility in those areas. If you develop a reputation as someone who is aligned with their goals and willing to help them achieve them, they will be regularly coming to you for solutions,” Gresch says.

Bundick says that communication is key to establishing a good relationship with finance.

“Having data and numbers that explain and justify your expenses help, as this is the language that finance speaks in,” he says.

THE MOST BANG FOR THE BUCK Various benchmarks and targeted metrics can provide goals for HTM leadership and allow the focus to be on operating at a level of high efficiency while providing the best return on every dollar spent. Sharing compelling metrics with finance that confirm efficient standards is something that Gresch and Bundick say can align the numbers-crunchers with HTM. The cost-of-service-ratio (COSR) takes the annual cost of maintenance compared to the original cost of the asset. This provides a number that can be used to compare against a benchmark.

While this metric has been around for several years, it still serves as a valuable benchmark to gauge maintenance costs against an ideal range.

The operating-expense-ratio (OER) is derived from the organization’s overall operating expense divided into the annual cost of maintenance. Zero point seven to zero point nine (0.7% to 0.9%) is considered high performing.

Cutting outside service costs to the HTM department can be one area of focus. Service contracts are an area where HTM can find savings through training and bringing more services in-house. Values that represent a high-performing, efficient HTM department, along with trained staff who can service more equipment in-house, will placate finance.

HTM CAPITAL EXPENDITURE INSIGHTS If HTM can be at the table at the time of capital expenditures, then HTM’s influence can be the most pronounced with cutting costs. Gresch lists contract costs, parts discounts, T & M labor discounts, as just a few examples. He says that this is the point where HTM has the most leverage to bring about savings. He explains that there is little chance for negotiation once capital purchases have been finalized.

There are assessment factors in capital planning.

“Age, utilization, operating platform, technology level, and market needs are just a few factors to take into consideration when planning for capital,” Bundick says.

“Serviceability factors, including age versus AHA estimated useful life, service costs versus purchase costs, service events that are trending up, support capability (end-of-life factors), equipment functional risks, technology levels (whether leading technology, current, aging, or obsolete), probable clinical or financial impact were the device to fail catastrophically, safety/ regulatory risks. I always suggest working with your finance team to develop the scoring and weighting for these factors to avoid debates about the validity of the numbers once you present your report,” Gresch says.

He explains that HTM has the data that is valuable to the capital expenditure decision-making process.

“Capture and report all relevant information that should be contained within your CMMS to ensure the right things are being identified that need to be replaced, whether related to July 2025 | TechNation 51

COVER STORY obsolescence, service costs or excessive breakdowns, age, regulatory factors, etc. I have never met a CFO who wouldn’t welcome that kind of objective data to help make good decisions. The tighter capital budgets become, the more critical it is to make the right decisions,” he says.

Bundick says that financial data that HTM tracks can be used to establish future budgets, provide estimates for new projects, and compare costs for service between different vendors when selecting new equipment.

“Bringing together all the requests for medical equipment into a summary with a ranking system for the most important items will put the HTM in a position to be a key decision maker for capital,” he says.

SHOWING MAXIMUM PRODUCTIVITY Finance would prefer that HTM does more with less or keep its budget flat year-over-year. This ignores increases in inventory that tax the department further.

Gresch says to adapt a productivity metric that the organization supports and submit this number to the CFO. The productivity number shows finance that HTM is at peak capacity servicing the current equipment inventory. He provided finance with a report that showed the current inventory added and the associated device hours.

Gresch says that his illustration was broken out by equipment areas such as general biomed, biomed specialty and imaging, which came up with a total number of devices and device hours and the number of FTEs required to support that inventory.

He says that an inventory increase leaves HTM with two choices: outsource the additional work or increase staff.

He adds that if the additional work created by increased inventory is kept in-house, he will take steps to ascertain that additional staff are well-trained and provide a better response time and that there will be less investment than outsourcing the additional work.

A further illustration on the report would show average device hours per technician. Taking the total amount of hours and dividing it by the available device hours per technician.

He says that the industry average is about 1,000 device hours per technician. He says that everything that occupied a technician’s time was considered and every effort was made to increase the technician’s efficiency and the 52 TechNation | July 2025

productivity number.

Everything that does not involve turning a wrench is an incursion on the technician’s productivity. All of these “nondevice hours” removed technicians from core work. These included compliance training, vendor training, administrative work or travel. Gresch says that meetings became more “crisp” and every other time-savings initiative was taken. He says that after this effort, the device hours per technician figure had risen all the way to 1,550.

This increase in productivity allows for getting more done with a set number of FTEs that shows that HTM has made a concerted effort at efficiency. This is what a CFO wants to see.

Gresch says that those in executive leadership respond well to data.

An actual cost to the organization for every staff member is something that Bundick’s organization utilizes. He says that it considers what the staff member is paid versus what the value to the organization is if that position did not exist. This allows HTM to illustrate to finance, or even outside consultants if staff reductions are considered, the value of the position and the implications of maintaining it in-house versus outsourcing.

Bundick says that while inventory and salaries have increased over the years, a chart containing all of the numbers still clearly shows that the OER has remained constant despite other increases. The COSR was also reduced and then maintained at an ideal level.

He says that it is also important that biomedical engineers spend as much of their time doing what he calls “defined productive time.” They should be doing what they are trained to do; repairing equipment and turning a wrench.

Moving equipment or spending excess time with paperwork takes them away from these core tasks and Bundick says it is important to efficiency to ascertain that the engineers are spending as much time as possible in their specialty.

ADDITIONAL COST-CUTTING OPPORTUNITIES Other opportunities for savings include auto expenses for field engineers who travel. Leasing fleet vehicles might save money.

Freight and shipping costs offer another area for savings.

Supplies, X-ray tubes and maintenance and service contracts are all areas for savings.

Bundick also says that added value can be derived from selling equipment instead of trading it in. He redeploys

COVER STORY equipment also. He says that data integrity is important and capturing this data is key.

Gresch adds that data integrity can include a defined consistent set of work-order codes that everybody is using the same way. He points to the accumulation of codes that can exist in CMMS as new codes are added.

He says that utilizing a set number of codes that staff are trained on and understand will allow for more accurate reporting and the integrity of the data is more reliable and can be used to measure anything.

“You can’t measure anything if you don’t have clean and consistent data,” Gresch says.

LAUNDRY LIST OF INITIATIVES Benjamin Scoggin, MBA, MMCi, senior director of clinical engineering at Duke Health Technology Solutions, has recently been working through the many ways that HTM can contribute to the budget with his leadership team.

One area is asset life cycle management and capital avoidance.

“By proactively extending the useful life of medical equipment through strategic maintenance, upgrades, and parts harvesting, HTM can reduce or defer capital purchases. Offering comprehensive, data-driven equipment replacement planning helps finance prioritize investments based on real clinical need rather than vendor pressure or end-of-warranty dates,” Scoggin says.

He says that another area is collaboration on construction and renovation projects.

“HTM can integrate early into construction and renovation planning to optimize device selection, right-size equipment fleets prevent unnecessary duplications and avoid costly retrofits later. They can also advocate for standardized technologies across sites, reducing training, service, and parts variability,” Scoggin says.

He agrees also with HTM’s contribution to data-driven capital planning.

“HTM can leverage CMMS data to provide finance leaders with real-world equipment utilization, uptime, and service cost data. This supports evidence-based budgeting rather than speculative purchasing. Prioritizing high-ROI purchases – those that increase capacity, improve throughput, or lower operating costs – can tie capital expenditures directly to margin improvement,” Scoggin says.

Another category Scoggin considers is what he terms technology assessment and clinical engagement.

“By partnering with clinical and IT stakeholders, HTM can assess new technologies not only for clinical value but also for sustainability, integration costs, cybersecurity risks, and serviceability. This comprehensive view ensures that new technology investments do not create unanticipated cost burdens,” Scoggin adds.

He says that active device cybersecurity management prevents costly downtime, compliance violations, and liability risks. Protecting medical devices also minimizes hidden costs that can arise from unplanned outages or security incidents.

Scoggin agrees that significant savings can be produced by negotiating service contracts, consolidating vendors, moving high-cost contracts in-house, and avoiding unnecessary OEM service agreements.

As finance scrutinizes their bottom line, reviews the budgets forwarded by department heads, and consider areas to cut, how does HTM stand out?

“Being able to share a complete and accurate assessment that allows finance to make the decisions that are best for the organization,” Bundick says.

Gresch agrees and says that a plan with provable benefits is needed.

CAREERS NOW Stuck in a rut? Tips to pull yourself out

f you’re coasting at work, not exactly challenged and stuck in the ho-hum status quo with boredom, you’re not alone. This is similar to employee engagement – in broad strokes, engagement is the level of your commitment and enthusiasm to your job and the company. According to 2023 data from Gallup, only 33% of workers were engaged.

This marks a decline from previous data.

As summer beckons, you may be tempted to coast until the fall before starting your job search. Or maybe you have a major surgery coming up or you’re planning for a wedding or <insert major life event here>, and you 54 TechNation | July 2025

simply don’t have bandwidth for finding and landing a new job. There’s no shame in that game.

If you’re stuck in a rut and either want to look for a new job or stick it out a bit longer, there are ways to at least pick yourself up for the time being. Staying in a dreaded plateau, especially for too long, can limit your innovation, creativity and mental space.

Are you bored of the company or the job? Can you infuse your job with new tasks or streamline efficiencies? Can you volunteer to pick up projects in areas outside the scope of your job?

For instance, maybe the budget isn’t there to get promoted to management and none of the managers are leaving, but you’re ready for the next level. Ask if

Be proactive in identifying ways you can upskill yourself to not only increase value to your portfolio, but to spike your job to have things to look forward to and embrace the joy of learning something new.

You can also start small with changes that don’t have to be work-related. Take a different commute on the way to and from work, and enjoy the new view. If you work remotely, take different breaks during the day: Have a dance party midmorning or go for a power walk at the end of the day.

Tammy Gooler Loeb, career and executive coach and author, said getting yourself out of a rut starts with your mindset.

“Your mindset is the first place to look, as that will set the direction for any action. Then, once you recognize you are in a rut, get curious. Curiosity will get the wheels in motion and help you to identify the factors that you need to address or let go of to make some decisions about what else you need to do,” she said.

Loeb said you can ask yourself what is missing in your daily activities or longer-range vision of work, professional development or opportunities for advancement, in addition to asking: “What ways do I feel stuck at work and what feels ho-hum?”

Loeb said the key to getting out of the rut is to determine the directions you want to go next.

“It is usually not a ‘wiggle,’ but a series of thoughtful activities requiring time and patience,” she said. “It can be very interesting, energizing, exhausting and frustrating, depending on how stuck you feel and how clear you are about what you want the next move to look or feel like.”

by KLAS Research and Censinet, provides a comprehensive analysis of cybersecurity preparedness across the healthcare sector.

Conducted in collaboration with AHA, Health-ISAC, HSCC, and The Scottsdale Institute, the study highlights industry-wide vulnerabilities, evaluates cybersecurity maturity, and offers actionable strategies to strengthen resilience.

For HTM professionals, cybersecurity is critical. Medical devices are increasingly connected, integrated into hospital networks, and reliant on cloud-based services. A cyberattack doesn’t just disrupt IT systems – it can cripple life-saving technologies, delay patient care, and compromise sensitive health data. Understanding the broader cybersecurity landscape helps HTM teams develop strategies to protect, recover, and strengthen medical device security.

One of the study’s most striking findings is that, for the third consecutive year, healthcare organizations are better at responding to cyber threats than preventing them. The Govern and Identify functions within the NIST Cybersecurity Framework 2.0 (CSF 2.0) continue to lag, exposing weaknesses in third-party risk management and asset tracking – two areas critical to medical device security.

The Change Healthcare cyberattack in February 2024 was

a wake-up call for the industry. A single breach cascaded across the healthcare ecosystem, affecting providers, payers, and patient safety.

Over 100 million patients, nearly one-third of the U.S. population, were impacted. Independent and small healthcare providers, lacking financial reserves, struggled to endure extended payment cycles. The incident caught the attention of government agencies and regulators, highlighting the interdependence of healthcare on backend service providers.

To address these challenges, HTM professionals must take proactive steps to strengthen cybersecurity within medical technologies.

Improving asset management is a crucial first step. Maintaining an updated inventory of connected devices, working with manufacturers to obtain security patches and update cycles, and adopting Zero Trust architecture where feasible to restrict access based on identity verification and continuous monitoring.

Beyond internal security measures, third-party risk management is an increasing concern. Healthcare providers should not bear the sole burden of policing vendors, technology and service providers must be held to higher cybersecurity standards, especially those supporting critical healthcare infrastructure. Medical device technologies that rely on cloud services to collect, evaluate, and manage clinical data must meet enforceable security requirements to prevent cascading risks.

Incident response and recovery planning are equally important. HTM teams should conduct cybersecurity exercises with IT teams to simulate medical device failures, develop a response and recovery plan, and map out responsibilities and communication protocols. Manufacturers and third-party vendors should be actively engaged in response planning to ensure rapid service restoration while balancing forensic investigations.

Collaboration across the healthcare sector is essential. Sharing cyber event data through Health-ISAC strengthens collective defenses, allowing organizations to apply detection and protection capabilities that prevent breaches before they occur. Monitoring Indicators of Compromise (IOCs), such as network anomalies, unauthorized access attempts, and unusual outbound traffic, can help identify threats early.

However, legacy medical devices often lack built-in security monitoring, making proactive threat intelligence even more critical.

The HSCC warns that cybersecurity threats in healthcare are escalating, but resource-strapped providers lack the workforce, strategic partners, and financial means to implement necessary protections. Interviews with 42 healthcare leaders revealed a troubling reality: providers know what must be done, but they lack the capacity to act. Without immediate support, these vulnerabilities will continue to jeopardize patient safety and healthcare operations.

HTM professionals are on the frontlines of medical device security.

By adopting proactive cybersecurity strategies, collaborating with IT teams, and demanding stronger protection from vendors, HTM leaders can help safeguard healthcare technology and ensure uninterrupted patient care. Cybersecurity is no longer optional; it is a fundamental pillar of patient safety.

NETWORKING NOTES Virtualization

n the early 1990s, when a network needed to function, a server was added. This server would perform a task, such as sharing a printer or files.

This was a way to provide a service to an overall network. However, as time went on, the network tasks grew and so did the server count.

Server rooms started to become flooded with multiple systems, most of which provided a single service to a network. Several of these only were used around 10% of the time. This became a waste of resources and power.

Virtualization became a solution to this problem. In a nutshell, this is how the virtual machine worked. It allows for a program in a window to function as if it were a stand-alone machine. This is called an environment. The software in the environment thinks it is on a stand-alone computer. The virtual environment has limited access to the main computer’s resources, which makes it scalable. The host computer controls the resources, such as storage, processing, video, and memory. The environment is isolated from the host computer and therefore, secure.

One of the earliest advantages of this was in copying data. In virtualization, a file serves as a simulated hard drive and in fact, holds the entire description of the environment.

This makes it easy to back up and restore as the environment is just a single file. A virtual machine file can be copied to another location. If the software becomes damaged, the file can be copied back. This restores the system to its original operation. One of the earlier uses of this was to create a tool for training people in a safe area.

Because of the easy restoring process, a trainee could not really damage the machine in the window. They also were controlled in the main host computer by user logins and permissions. It was an ideal training tool. This training environment is called a sandbox.

The sandbox also created a safe place for installing and updating new, unknown, or unproven software. Network administrators make a copy of a whole computer into a virtual file, which is called a snapshot. The administrator then moves the snapshot into a virtual environment where 60 TechNation | July 2025

they can test unknown software. If the unknown software destroys the virtual system, nothing is lost. Reloading the snapshot file returns the virtual system to its original state.

Early antivirus systems used this technique to test unknown code. Another use of virtualization is that it also allows for migration. This is when an administrator rolls over a snapshot from a physical server to a virtual one. It can also be when the virtual file is moved from one host server to another. Snapshots and virtualization function a lot like a backup program and a migration management tool. This quick redundancy makes virtual machines popular.

Eventually, the host computer running the virtual machine became much more powerful. CPUs are now multicore, and memory is faster and larger. This allows multiple virtual machines to run on the same host computer. Eventually, virtual machine host operating systems were replaced with operating systems dedicated to running just the environments. In short, virtual machine host computers have their OS. Hyper-V. ESXI and Xen are all examples of host virtualization operating systems. These OSes are scaled down, allowing for more computer resources to run multiple environments simultaneously. Now, servers running virtual machines have the computing power and memory that eclipses desktop computers. They often have 4 CPUs, each one with over 128 cores, and 24 memory slots. A standard computer for reference, has one CPU with 8 to 16 cores and two memory slots. Virtual servers incorporate multiple hard drives in a RAID setup for up to 20 times the normal storage space. They are dedicated to their task and are way more powerful than a normal laptop. These incredibly large servers run over a hundred different virtual servers, each appearing on the network to be a separate, stand-alone computer.

It gets even more fantastic when considering containers and cloud virtualization. A container isn’t a whole virtual server. A traditional virtual machine functions as a normal computer that technicians log on to and control using a remote desktop. A container is more like a stand-alone software with a specific task. Think of each container as software in a custom virtual environment that does not need to interact with other programs or machines. The container

OS provides only what the software requires. The software starts or “spins up” in the computer memory. It is a short-lived application that performs a task. When completed, the container shuts down. In this way, remote applications can run as needed. When finished, they close and disappear from memory and storage.

This maximizes the security aspect of the software and minimizes the hardware requirements. It is handy for small programs that users would need intermittently, such as an instruction video. The key with this technique is to see the program as small, lightweight, isolated from other programs, and usually web deployed. This is going to become more useful as we become more web dependent. This is the concept called Software as a Service, or SaaS. Cloud Virtualization is when a machine is hosted by a large company, such as Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, or Amazon Web Services (AWS). On these large servers, a company can pay for a server to use over the Internet. This system is for all purposes just like having a physical machine, but it is deployed using the Internet and a VPN. Administrators can use the Cloud to host websites or provide a service over the Internet. This is called a Platform as a Service or PaaS. The maintenance of the server, its security, and its upgrades all become the responsibility of the hosting company.

As medical systems become more Internet dependent, such as a Cloud PACS system, this technology will become more common as it has significant advantages in cost and security.

Regardless of the application, virtualization has changed our perceptions of what a server is. It provides a sandbox test environment, migration, backup, massive expandability, security and remote hosting. It helps to reduce hardware and power requirements by consolidating systems. An entire system now becomes a single file. Containers provide isolation and specialization of software. Cloud virtualization even reduces the need for onsite servers. Now we can go to a web-based company and rent an online PaaS server.

Regardless of the usage, virtualization has revolutionized the computer industry and given the backbone to most networks. Look around, it is already in use in your hospital. If you are new to this concept, please explore the options presented by this technology. I know you will be pleasantly surprised about its functionality.

RIGHT TO REPAIR U.S. Army Embraces Right to Repair

BY NATHAN PROCTOR n a milestone for Right to Repair, on April 30, Secretary of the Army Daniel P. Driscoll called for the Army to seek to include Right to Repair in all procurement contracts.

The order included a number of policy changes, with an intention to “eliminate wasteful spending,” “modernize inefficient defense contracts,” and otherwise streamline Army operations. Among those policy changes was this section regarding the Right to Repair: To accelerate modernization and acquisition efficiency, the Secretary of the Army shall … Identify and propose contract modifications for right to repair provisions where intellectual property constraints limit the Army’s ability to conduct maintenance and access the appropriate maintenance tools, software, and technical data – while preserving the intellectual capital of American industry. Seek to include right to repair provisions in all existing contracts and also ensure these provisions are included in all new contracts.

Military Right to Repair has been a topic for many years, including a prominent call for change from then-Captain Elle Ekman featured in The New York Times in 2019. The new Army policy follows 6 years of investigation and advocacy, and is an important step forward – but more needs to be done to ensure that our service members have what they need to fix the equipment they rely on.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR MEDICAL DEVICES? The Army purchases many medical devices, and also has its own team of biomedical technicians. Perhaps this is why the medical device manufacturer trade association, AdvaMed, signed a letter opposing Military Right to Repair in the fall of 2024.

Not only that, AdvaMed hailed the stalling of that measure in their 2024 annual report, writing “AdvaMed successfully prevented the inclusion of a ‘right to repair’ provision in the final National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), 62 TechNation | July 2025

safeguarding the integrity of medical devices.” The trade association added “Ensuring that only authorized repairs are permitted protects patient safety from risks associated with improperly maintained or modified medical devices.”

As I have written about previously, when manufacturers refuse to allow military biomeds to access the full range of service materials for the equipment under their care, it carries risks far greater than “improperly maintained” devices.

Namely, that people with urgent, life-threatening medical issues do not get the care they need because the only people available to service the equipment are being thwarted by the manufacturer.

I spoke with two former military biomeds who both described being denied access to service keys for equipment in field hospitals in Afghanistan. “Who knows how many people’s lives were affected?” one of them lamented to me.

WHAT’S NEXT? The Army leading on Right to Repair is a huge step forward. It would be best to make Right to Repair a basic rule, so it’s not a topic of debate in every round of procurement. There are huge financial incentives for manufacturers to control the repair of their products. Given my eight years of work on this campaign, I know manufacturers will push as hard as they can to maintain that control, and I worry about how that pressure might affect the staff who negotiate these contracts.

We believe that everyone, everywhere deserves the right to repair the products that they own – and that means manufacturers should make the parts, tools or information required available.
