5 MedWrench Features You Should Be Using

ost people know MedWrench for its forums, where BMETs swap troubleshooting tips, share manuals, and ask questions only another tech would understand.

But MedWrench is more than a Q&A board — think of it as a toolbox with hidden compartments. Here are five features I’ve found especially useful.

SERVICE MANUAL LIBRARY Every BMET knows the frustration of needing a manual that’s nowhere to be found — vendor site locked, shop binder incomplete, Google useless. MedWrench’s library, organized by manufacturer and model, often has documents you won’t find elsewhere. It’s community-driven too: if you have a manual that isn’t listed, upload it and help the next tech. I’ve saved hours checking here first, and I use it to teach students that manuals are part of the job, not optional.

EQUIPMENT DIRECTORY This underrated feature is a living catalog of what people are working on, with specs, manuals, and user comments. Use it to compare models when evaluating purchases, or to spot trends — a model that keeps popping up may be troublesome or simply widely used. For managers, it’s a strategic tool for anticipating training needs.

ALERTS & NOTIFICATIONS Set up alerts for topics, equipment, or threads so you’re notified instead of checking forums daily. This is especially useful for niche equipment, connecting you to others facing the same challenges. I also recommend alerts for FDA recalls — staying current protects patients, not just devices.

GURU INSIGHTS The guru program highlights experienced voices sharing practical advice you won’t find in manuals — the kind of tips like “this error code usually means a loose connector, not a failed board.” Being a

guru isn’t about knowing everything; it’s about showing up consistently. Start small: answer one question, share one manual, and build credibility over time.

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES MedWrench is about people as much as equipment. Reach out to techs who post consistently in your specialty — a quick message can become a lasting connection. Unlike LinkedIn, this networking is grounded in real problems and solutions, and helping someone troubleshoot builds genuine trust.

PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER Picture this: an alert warns you of a recall, the directory confirms specs, the library provides the updated manual, a guru’s post flags a common pitfall, and a fellow tech offers support. In under an hour, you’ve gone from problem to solution.

e work in an environment where the result of not doing our job can lead to patients being injured; a doctor or facility facing a lawsuit; or a facility losing its accreditation and insurance coverage.

I have been a biomed for over 2 decades. I started at 15, helping to work on Puritan Bennet 7200s at a hospital in Brooklyn. Thirty-two years later, which included college, I’ve seen a lot working at five hospitals, two manufacturers and five third-party or ISOs. I’ve seen quite a bit from multiple perspectives and MedWrench remains a valuable tool for me and my team.

Some of the issues I’ve seen are technicians skipping device testing; overlooking accessories and consumables that are damaged, failing or expired; lack of test equipment; wrong test equipment being used; and no or poor, documentation.

I’ve watched coworkers follow every step of a service manual’s periodic maintenance instructions. I’ve watched coworkers stare at a device, turn it on/off, slap a sticker on it and call it a day. I’ve witnessed everything in between those two extremes. Sometimes the skipping of steps or tests was because of a lack of test equipment, lack of training or just lack of integrity.

Another aspect to properly inspecting devices is to uncover problems with the device or its accessories before the device might fail while in use. A service technician, doing their job, prevents downtime and generates extra revenue for their employer. He or she uncovers expired pads, expired or failing batteries and damaged accessories such as lead wires. If a device fails to work during a case, the case can now take longer and that increases the possibility of harm to the patient. A user must locate a replacement device or stop/cancel the case. This costs money and puts an undue hardship on the patient. They now have to take more time off work to come back for the surgery, exam, etc. Now imagine if instead of an operating room or exam room, this failure happens in the emergency room. Such an event could be catastrophic. Would you want your wife/husband, son/daughter, mother/father, etc. to be fighting for their life in that scenario? I’ve been there and I absolutely do not want to have that result.

Some of those companies and biomed shops haven’t had the specific test equipment or accessories and we’ve either made our own (test rigs from expired pads, ESU REM cables, etc.). When

specific test equipment wasn’t available, the device became electrical safety only. I’ve also witnessed techs using the wrong test equipment (like an O2 analyzer on a neopuff – a respiratory pressure device for newborns). Bringing this up to the tech, led to my getting canned but the backstabbing and office politics are a story for another time.

So, what do each of you do when you don’t have the proper test equipment, accessories, training, etc.?

I’ve learned many things in my time, not just in this career but a few other career fields I’ve worked in. Of those, I was taught to fully document what I do and to test as far as I can, and to seek out advice, or assistance when needed. These days I find myself as the one giving out the assistance and knowledge.

Without proper documentation, any work you’ve done counts for nothing. Now, a work order should tell a clear, easy-to-follow story.

Something a user, inspector or lawyer can easily read and understand. We need to take every job seriously and documentation is a major aspect of that. Proper documentation allows a customer to give inspectors what they need, to maintain accreditation and insurance. It also defends us in court in case of a malpractice or negligence suit. I’ve heard from many companies and medical centers about their issues with technicians not documenting properly, or at all. I’ve also looked over other people’s work orders. If I have to go on a service call, I want as much information as possible as I can get. The information means that I show up prepared. After all the 6 Ps (Proper Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance) applies every day. It also means I can spend less time on a call and not necessarily have to worry about having to return.

I was also taught to treat every device as if a family member could be using it one day. As a single parent to a special-needs child, I’ve experienced my son needing several different medical devices. Some that I have not tested and some that I have. We have many devices in our home and because of my career, I’m able to understand and adjust them as necessary. This has become particularly useful when in a PICU. I’m able to have equipment added to or removed from my child’s care, and train/instruct staff on its use. I’ve checked for current PM labels, visual inspection of devices, etc. And this has made a difference in his care and current quality of life. This I could talk about all day, every day.

These are lessons I’ve carried throughout my career.

The Evolution of Imaging Service: From Equipment Repair to Integrated Expertise THEN

T

he imaging service industry has never stood still. What began as a highly specialized field focused on maintaining individual systems has evolved into a complex, interconnected discipline that touches nearly every corner of healthcare.

In the early days, imaging service was largely mechanical and modalityspecific. X-ray systems were simpler, analog, and often standalone. Service professionals focused on keeping equipment operational, troubleshooting components, and ensuring uptime. Success was measured by whether the system worked.

Today, that definition feels incomplete.

Modern imaging environments are digital, networked, and deeply integrated into clinical workflows. Modalities like CT, MRI, and advanced interventional systems are no longer isolated pieces of equipment. They are part of a broader ecosystem that includes PACS, DICOM communication, hospital networks, cybersecurity protocols, and regulatory requirements.

The shift from analog to digital imaging marked one of the most significant turning points in the industry. As images moved from film to data, service professionals were required to expand

their skill sets beyond hardware. Understanding how images are acquired is no longer enough. Today’s imaging professionals must also understand how those images are processed, transmitted, stored, and secured.

This evolution has introduced a new level of complexity.

Imaging service now requires collaboration across multiple departments including IT, clinical engineering, radiology, compliance, and cybersecurity. Each group brings its own priorities and language. Bridging those gaps has become a critical part of the role.

Learning to “speak the same language” is no longer optional.

A service professional may troubleshoot an image quality issue that is not rooted in the system itself, but in network latency, DICOM configuration, or data routing within PACS. Cybersecurity concerns such as ransomware attacks or network vulnerabilities can also directly impact imaging system functionality and patient care.

Regulatory requirements have expanded alongside this complexity. HIPAA compliance, data privacy, and system security are now part of the daily landscape. Imaging systems are no longer just clinical tools. They are data endpoints that must be protected.

At the same time, the industry is facing another significant challenge: the loss of experienced professionals. Many of the individuals who helped build the foundation of imaging service MedWrench | Resource Guide 2026 13

are reaching retirement. Their knowledge, often gained through decades of hands-on experience, is not easily replaced.

This creates both a gap and an opportunity.

For those entering the field, the pathway into imaging service looks different than it did in the past. The role demands a broader understanding of technology, but it also offers a more dynamic and impactful career. Imaging service professionals are not just maintaining equipment. They are supporting the systems that clinicians rely on to diagnose, treat, and save lives.

This shift has increased the importance of structured training and continuous learning. Hands-on experience remains critical, but it must now be paired with an understanding of multi-vendor environments, digital communication standards, and system integration.

As the industry continues to evolve, so does the responsibility of those supporting it. Radiological Service Training Institute (RSTI) has remained focused on staying ahead of that curve by continuously investing in current technology, expanding system availability, and building relevant training content that reflects the imaging systems being serviced in the field today. The goal is not only to teach foundational concepts, but to prepare professionals for the environments they will actually encounter.

That commitment is reflected not just in infrastructure, but in people. RSTI is proud to celebrate a recent individual achievement that represents the strength of the entire team. As Todd Boyland, President of RSTI, noted, his recognition as

This starts with exposure. It starts with conversations that highlight the impact of the work, the evolution of the technology, and the need for individuals who are willing to grow with it. It also requires collaboration across organizations, educators, and industry leaders to create clear pathways into the field.

Imaging service is no longer defined by a single modality or skill set. It is defined by adaptability, cross-functional knowledge, and a commitment to keeping healthcare systems running at their highest level.

The industry has evolved. The expectations have changed.

And the opportunity has never been greater.

How to Use MedWrench for Career Growth

T

here is a lot to do when it comes to starting and running a biomedical services company. Expanding out your client base, working up procedures, dealing with insurance and all the other things that come with running a small business can be daunting. This is especially true when what you really want to do is just turn a wrench! One resource that has been with me from the very beginning is MedWrench.com.

When I was first getting Maple Tree Biomedical off the ground, the website proved to be invaluable. Its knowledge base, service provider listings and the ability to connect with technicians from around the world have been a tremendous asset to my business. Let’s focus on a few parts of the site to illustrate what I mean.

When I was in college, a professor once told me, “It’s not about knowing everything; it’s about knowing how to find the answers.” Having a resource like MedWrench.com available allows me to expand the scope of my business. I regularly encounter equipment makes and models that I’ve never seen before, but with MedWrench’s equipment listings and forums readily accessible, I can quickly find the manuals and documentation I need. As a result, when a customer calls to ask if I service a particular piece of equipment, I can almost always say yes. This capability allows me to broaden my reach and ultimately generate more opportunities for my business.

Now raise your hand if you think you can service and repair everything. OK, don’t actually do that and shame on you if you did. I certainly can’t. One of the most valuable aspects of the platform is the human connection. Since becoming a Guru with MedWrench, I find myself on the site nearly every day. In fact, I was already using the platform long before becoming a Guru. It’s kind of how I got the title. It’s played a role in helping me get to where I am today. You’ll often find me in the forum section, doing my best to help answer users’ questions. I’ve had the opportunity to connect with BMETs, HTM professionals and end users from across the industry through those interactions. I’ve even picked up a customer or two through the forums which is pretty nice as well. I encourage others to join the conversation. Hop in there and see if you can help someone out. The Trends Shaping Healthcare Technology Management

E

very year, AAMI eXchange gives us a read on where HTM is really spending its energy — not the version pitched from the vendor floor, but the one that comes out in hallway conversations.

This year was no different, and the signal has only gotten stronger every week since, as FSI’s Roadshow has carried those same conversations into hospital parking lots across the country. The theme is consistent: HTM teams aren’t chasing more tools. They want the tools they already have to hold up under the volume of work in front of them.

DATA IS STILL THE CENTER OF THE CONVERSATION, BUT IT’S EVOLVED. That appetite for reliability over novelty showed up most clearly in how people talked about data. If there was one thread running through nearly every session at AAMI eXchange, it was data — not data collection in the abstract, but data trustworthy enough to act on without a cleanup pass first. HTM departments are still dealing with incomplete asset records, inconsistent naming conventions, and information scattered across systems that don’t talk to each other. Even programs with mature CMMS implementations told us they’re spending real time reconciling data instead of using it. What teams want now is a faster, more automated way to get accurate information into the right place, so the downstream work of reporting, planning, and decision-making isn’t constantly held up by what’s missing or unreliable upstream.

INTEGRATIONS NEED TO HOLD UP OVER TIME, NOT JUST ON DAY ONE. Closely tied to the data conversation was a consistent push on integrations. HTM professionals aren’t asking for more integrations for their own sake, they’re asking for ones that keep working without someone babysitting them. Whether it’s device data from biomedical equipment, work order information syncing across platforms, or asset records populating without manual entry, the goal is the same: a connected environment that runs quietly in the background.

AI IS GETTING A MORE GROUNDED LOOK THIS YEAR. AI is on everyone’s radar, but the tone in customer conversations and across conference agendas was noticeably more practical. The early hype has given way to a genuine effort to figure out where AI helps HTM operations, and almost every useful example came back to data: sifting through records, spotting patterns, surfacing the right information at the right moment. HTM leaders are open to AI becoming part of daily operations, but they’re holding it to a fair standard. It must solve a real problem, fit existing workflows, and produce results people can see. One area drawing real interest is the shift from predictive maintenance toward evidence-based decision support, where AI pulls together maintenance history, service costs, failure patterns, and performance data to help teams make faster, better-supported calls without replacing the judgment of the people making them.

HTM LEADERS ARE TAKING OPERATIONS STRATEGY TO THE NEXT LEVEL. Maybe the most telling signal from this year’s conference or our Roadshow conversations wasn’t a single piece of technology or a

topic, it was the experience level of the people asking the questions. Many of the HTM leaders we talked with have already solved the foundational problems: standardized processes, built out asset inventories, established reliable workflows. They’ve reached a point where the question isn’t how we get this program off the ground, it’s how we get meaningfully better from here.

That’s a different, more strategic conversation, and it’s one FSI is built to have.
