MCV Society Members Enjoy an Evening at Agecroft Hall The MCV Society, which recognizes donors who have made planned gifts to benefit the MCV Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University, hosted its fifth annual spring outing on April 28th. This year’s event took place at Agecroft Hall, a 15th century English manor house located in the Windsor Farms neighborhood in Richmond.

Set high above the banks of the James River, Agecroft Hall is Richmond’s very own 15th century manor house, transported from England to Virginia by Thomas C. Williams, Jr. who bought it at auction at the end of the 19th century and had it dismantled, crated, and shipped across the Atlantic in the early 20th century.

MCV Foundation President, Bill Kotti, welcomed the group and announced that this year the MCV Society inducted a record 52 new members. He also recognized MCV Foundation Trustees, Lifetime Honorary Trustees, and VCU leaders in attendance. Dr. Joe Kohen M’55, who lives in Alamo, California, received a special gift for traveling the greatest distance. The group of over 80 MCV Society members and guests attended a reception in the court yard and toured the estate’s beautiful gardens. Members enjoyed catching up with former classmates, colleagues and friends, reminiscing about old times, and discussing new developments on the MCV Campus. James River Cellars Winery provided a wine tasting of several of their most popular selections, including Rad Red. A portion of proceeds from every bottle of Rad Red is donated to the Massey Cancer Center. Small group tours of the home were also well received by participants who found them to be both educational and entertaining.

Previous MCV Society event venues include the Sweely Estate Winery, Barboursville Vineyards, Veritas Vineyard and Winery, and the Williamsburg Winery. These annual outings have grown in popularity each year and provide MCV Society members the chance to come together and cultivate relationships through a shared affinity for the Medical College of Virginia Campus of Virginia Commonwealth University.

MCV Society members are helping to advance superior patient care, medical education and research in every corner of campus through their thoughtful consideration. The MCV Foundation created an MCV Campus Heritage Society in 1994 to recognize and extend gratitude to those who have made provisions in their estate planning in support of any of the MCV Campus schools — Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy — as well as MCV Hospitals, and Massey Cancer Center. The name of the society changed to the MCV Society in 2003 to recognize the tradition and heritage of the Medical College of Virginia. MCV Foundation Trust The Culmination of their 62nd year serving the MCV Campus The MCV Foundation Board of Trustees held its Annual Dinner on Monday, May 9, 2011. Embracing a “team” theme, emcee and MCV Foundation Board Chair Dr. John C. Doswell II welcomed new trustees as “rookies of the year”, honored outstanding volunteer leaders, and shared a “highlight reel” of events that took place on the MCV Campus and across the university over the past year. VCU Pauley Heart Center Announces Professorship Cardiology Consortium Recognizes Donors, Presents Gifts

Longtime university supporters Ken and Dianne Wright have established the C. Kenneth Wright Professorship in Cardiology. The $250,000 gift was announced at the VCU Pauley Heart Center’s annual Cardiology Consortium in May. “All of us at the VCU Pauley Heart Center are grateful to Ken and Dianne for their ongoing support and their friendship,” said Dr. Kenneth Ellenbogen, chairman of the VCU Pauley Heart Center’s division of cardiology.

“Their generosity is truly an inspiration.

The C. Kenneth Wright Professorship will help us recruit an outstanding scholar 2 to our faculty.”

The couple’s generosity extends to both the Monroe Park and MCV Campuses of VCU. Ken Wright is a member of the VCU School of Engineering Foundation’s Board of Trustees and Dianne Wright is a Trustee of the MCV Foundation and serves on the Massey Cancer Center’s Advisory Board.

In addition to the announcement of the C. Kenneth Wright Professorship, created by generous donors Ken and Dianne Wright, donors and friends were honored at the VCU Pauley Heart Center’s Cardiology Consortium. The Pauley Heart Center’s namesakes, Dorothy and Stan Pauley, were recognized for their continued support of the Center and of the university through generous financial gifts as well as their time. Mr. Pauley is a Founding Trustee of the VCU School of Engineering Foundation’s Board.

Tribute was also paid to Dr. Howard McCue who died in December 2010 at the age of 93, and a moment of silence honored the memory of other caring donors and friends.

Specially designed ties and scarves featuring the signature Pauley Heart Center heart logo were presented to all Consortium guests in appreciation for their dedication to the Center’s mission of providing the highest quality, cost effective cardiovascular care in a comprehensive, innovative environment.

Jim and Fran McGlothlin, and his response is simple.

“They are great people who do great things.” Indeed, the McGlothlins have a generous habit of sharing their resources with institutions they believe in, including the VCU School of Medicine.

do great things’’ Dr. Young, director of the Harold F. Young Neurosurgical Center at the VCU Medical Center and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, met the couple in the late 1990s as they searched for an end to Mr. McGlothlin’s chronic back pain.

“I had a disc that had deteriorated and great difficulty standing,” McGlothlin said. “I found my way to Dr. Young and his team.” Within the next seven months, McGlothlin underwent two surgical procedures to help return him to a productive, pain-free life. Each procedure was a success and today he works, walks and plays golf as if nothing ever happened.

A year later, his wife Fran made the trip back to the VCU Medical Center from their home in Bristol, Virginia. She was experiencing severe neck pain and could find no relief.

“Both Fran and Jim had conditions not easy to diagnose,” Young said. “They had both been evaluated elsewhere and I believe perhaps others didn’t spend enough time with them to appreciate the difficulties they were experiencing.

One of the things we do is to sit down and listen to our patients’ stories. They were in a great deal of pain. It was hard for either of them to function normally. Fortunately, we were able to make a difference in their lives and improve the quality of their lives.”

The patient-centered team effort surrounding Jim and Fran McGlothlin’s surgeries and their lengthy recovery struck a chord with the couple and they began to view Dr. Young and his colleagues as “guardian angels.”

As their pain ended, their friendship began.

“We became good personal friends and I just admire him so much,” Mr. McGlothlin said. “He’s one of the great medical people who’s not only talented and professional,

but he has this wonderful caring attitude. At night, years later, he’d call and ask how I was.”

Fran McGlothlin, too, considers Young to be a close family friend. “I can’t say enough good things about him. He saw us both through a very stressful and trying time. I’ve never had another problem thanks to Harry. After Jim had been in the hospital for more than a week after his back surgery, he showed up on Christmas Day to check on him. I’ll never forget it,” she said.

In tribute to their friend’s compassionate care and patientfocused approach to medicine, the McGlothlins gave a $25 million gift to the School of Medicine after a dinner conversation with Young and Jerome F. Strauss III, M.D., Ph.D., Dean of the School of Medicine. The new medical education center now under construction has been named in the couple’s honor in recognition of their gift.

“When we learned that the new education center would be used for training of not only VCU interns and medical students, but also for others around the region and the community,” Mr. McGlothlin said, “it occurred to Fran and me that this is a great thing – to be able to bring doctors up from Bristol to take advantage of new technology and new techniques in medical education. Here we’ll have a center that would help everyone in the region.”

Gifts With Lasting Impact The McGlothlins are known for their exceptional generosity.

In addition to their recent gift to the School of Medicine’s new medical education center, one of the largest private gifts ever received by the university, they established the Chronicle of Giving Summer 2011

The James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Medical Education Center children 18 months to 20 years old. Mr. McGlothlin, an avid golfer and founder of The Olde Farm golf club in Bristol, recently organized “The Big Three” benefit tournament, which brought together Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Gary Player in support of the Mountain Mission School. The event raised more than $15 million.

“We support people who are doing really great work in the medical area,” Mrs. McGlothlin said. “We have great hopes that VCU will do lots of wonderful things and we want to support them as much as we can. We try to support things that are really meaningful not just through gifts for today, but through gifts that will last for a long time.”

As patrons of the arts, the McGlothlins donated their collection of significant American art to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts as well as pledged their financial support of the Museum’s capital campaign to fund its renovation and expansion. Mr. McGlothlin sits on the museum’s Board of Trustees. Mrs. McGlothlin is a former Board member.

They are benefactors of several educational institutions including the College of William and Mary, their alma mater, and the Mountain Mission School in Grundy, Virginia, a private, non-profit residential educational institution for

In the School of Medicine’s new medical education center, the McGlothins found a combination of three things they care deeply about: education, medicine and the arts.

The new building, now under construction, has been named The James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Medical Education Center. It was designed by I. M. Pei’s internationally acclaimed architectural firm, Pei Cobb Freed & Partners.

Known for its design of the East Wing of the National Gallery, the Louvre Pyramid and more than 200 projects in 100 cities around the world, the firm paid careful attention to maintaining the integrity of Richmond’s history and upholding the tradition of MCV while presenting a fresh, modern approach to architectural design.

The McGlothlins weren’t aware of the I.M. Pei connection when they began considering their gift, but were pleased when they later learned of the artistic impact it would bring to the Richmond metropolitan area and beyond.

“Art and culture, education and medicine are lasting gifts we can make. The fact that I.M. Pei’s firm designed the new center is really frosting on the cake,” Mr. McGlothlin said.

Recognizing a Team Effort The successful outcome of the McGlothlins’ surgical experiences at VCU would not have been possible without a well-honed team of professionals upon whom they relied.

“From the people in the blood bank, to the nurses’ aids, to the cooks, to the staff that clean the floors and all the associated departments such as Orthopaedics, everybody made it work for them,” said Young. “It was a team effort.”

Efforts like these have made the Neurosurgery Department at VCU one of the nation’s top head-trauma programs and a leading recipient of sponsored research from the National Institutes of Health.

The McGlothlins view their lead gift to the School of Medicine as a way of recognizing the work of Dr. Young and his team. It is also a way for the couple to honor those who contribute to their philanthropic endeavors as dedicated staff associates and business partners.

As co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of The United Company, a diversified business with interests in financial services, energy, and real estate development, Mr. McGlothlin is the team leader at one of the country’s largest privately held companies. “We’re very blessed to work with thousands of people who helped make this gift possible,” he said. “We want to recognize the men and women who have worked with us.”

A Powerful Statement Governor Bob McDonnell and Sheldon Retchin, M.D., Vice President for VCU Health Sciences and CEO, VCU Health System, announced the gift at the university on April 28 before members of the press, faculty and friends.

“It was a day unlike any other,” said Dean Strauss.

“Jim and Fran McGlothlin have been longtime friends of the medical school, and specifically, of Dr. Harry Young and his neurosurgery team. Inspired as they were by his compassionate and skillful patient care, they wanted to make a contribution to the training of future generations of physicians.

And with a gift of $25 million, they have made a powerful statement of support for our own medical school’s future.”

The $158 million building enables the school to address the statewide and national physician shortage by accommodating a larger class size, from 200 to 250, which increases the total medical student body to 1,000.

After a year of demolition and preparation, the footprint of the new VCU School of Medicine Education Center is now complete. Steel is being erected and the building’s “skin” will provide an even more exciting view of what’s to come.

Changing the Face of Medical Education Named The James W. and Frances G. McGlothlin Medical Education Center in recognition of the couple’s generous $25 million lead gift to the School of Medicine, the new medical education hub will change the face of medical education at VCU. “The new facility will be a landmark not only because of its design, but because of its unique attributes, including a large simulation center, that will support curriculum innovation across the spectrum of medical education,” said Jerome F. Strauss III, M.D., Ph.D., Dean of the VCU School of Medicine.

From a new curriculum to specially designed areas for maximum learning, the new building is under construction on the site of the former A.D. Williams Clinic at the corner of 12th and Marshall Streets.

The new Center is a top priority for the university because of the growing shortage of physicians across the nation. By 2020, there will be a shortage of approximately 1,500 physicians in Virginia alone. The demand for more frequent doctor’s visits among the aging population will exacerbate the challenge of adequate health care access for all.

Physician education in the new education center includes a new curriculum as well as specially-designed learning studios to foster clinically-driven problem solving. Top floors of the new building will house the Massey Cancer Center’s Research Pavillion.

“Even before the McGlothlins’ announcement, the new center had won the support of alumni and friends who had committed $8.2 million to the medical school’s campaign that encompasses the building as well as scholarships and professorships,” said Dean Strauss. “With this announcement, we move into a more public phase of our campaign and expect to expand our cadre of supporters who will join the McGlothlins and other donors in making a statement of support for our vision of medical education’s future.”

New Dental School Scholarship Encourages Leadership A new leadership scholarship in the VCU School of Dentistry has been established by the Virginia Dental Association in recognition of Ronald L. Tankersley MCV D.D.S. ’68; O.M.F.S. ’71. Tankersley, past President of the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association, the Virginia Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Southeastern Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons practices oral and maxillofacial surgery in Newport News, Virginia. He is a fellow of the American and International Colleges of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, an international honorary organization for dentists, and a Diplomate and past examiner of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

“Adaptive leadership will be a requirement for those that choose to lead the profession into an uncertain and unpredictable future. We must begin that process now and through this most important initiative in Dr. Tankersley’s name, we will create that future filled with hope,” said Dr. Terry D. Dickinson, Executive Director of the Virginia Dental Association.

Influential in shaping Dr. Tankersley’s career were the late Harry Lyons ’23 D.D.S., former Dean of the MCV School of Dentistry and a past President of the ADA, and the late Elmer Bear, D.D.S., former professor and chair of the MCV Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, under whom he did his oral surgery residency.

“Dr. Lyons emphasized professionalism,” Tankersley said.

“He personally helped transform dentistry from a trade to a profession. Dr. Bear stressed the need to be involved in organized dentistry and the obligation to be active.”

The Ronald L. Tankersley D.D.S. Leadership Scholarship will be awarded to one or more rising seniors in the VCU

School of Dentistry who demonstrate innovative, motivational leadership influencing their academic, professional, or community environments. Dr. Tankersley exemplifies these traits.

“Ron Tankersley is the supreme example of long term leadership within the profession of dentistry,” said Charles Cuttino MCV D.D.S. ’66; O.M.F.S. ’72, past President of the Virginia Dental Association and member of the Virginia Oral Health Coalition Board of Directors. “He is a strong proponent for ethics in the practice of his profession as well as teaching students.”

Dr. David C. Sarrett, dean of the VCU School of Dentistry agrees. “Our students rely upon leadership role models like Dr. Tankersley. From his example, they learn how to develop and grow as dental professionals and as contributing members of their communities. The Tankersley Scholarship is a muchneeded boost in our efforts to recognize promising young dental professionals.”

“Today’s student leaders are the most knowledgeable and sophisticated in our history,” said Tankersley. “Their focus on keeping sound science and ethics the foundation for our profession is our greatest hope for the future. So, I am honored to have the opportunity to acknowledge some of the most outstanding among them through this scholarship. Unfortunately, there are many great student leaders that cannot be recognized because of limited funding. So, I hope that the leadership scholarship will grow in size and scope through subsequent contributions by others.”

The Dentistry Thread The history of the Medical College of Virginia is varied and can be likened to a tapestry, woven of individual threads that together make up a bigger picture but retain their own individual identity as well.

You may know that the School of Medicine was founded in 1838 as the Medical Department of Hampden-Sydney College. What you may not know is how the School of Dentistry developed from there.

The VCU School of Dentistry is the 16th oldest dental school in the United States. Here are some other facts you might not know: 1893 – The School of Dentistry was created when the University College of Medicine opened with a dental department as one of its original divisions.

• 1895 – The first dental class of three students graduated.

1897 – The Medical College of Virginia inaugurated a dental education program.

• Dr. Henry C. Jones was the chairman of the dental faculty.

• 1900 – The first dental class of five students graduated.

• Requirements to the program were: – Graduation from college or high school or from another literary

institution of approved standing – Satisfactory completion of an entrance exam conducted in

accordance with the requirements of the National Association

of Dental Faculties

– A diploma from a reputable medical college entitled its holder to enter

the intermediate class, skipping Anatomy, Chemistry, Physiology,

Material Medica, and Therapudics • Fees for the entire session were $90 not including a $30 diploma fee.

1901 – 1906 – Dr. J. Hall Moore was chairman of the dental faculty.

His work in helping frame Virginia dental laws earned him the designation “Father of Dentistry in Virginia”.

1913 – The two schools, the University College of Medicine and the Medical College of Virginia, merged to form the MCV School of Dentistry.

1913 – 1954 – classes were primarily heald in McGuire Hall.

1950s – Dental students attended classes and treated patients in clinics located in McGuire Hall.

• Alumni remember a shortage of chairs and recall that there were always six or eight students who couldn’t see patients.

January 1954 – The groundbreaking and subsequent opening of the Wood Building ushered in a new era for the School of Dentistry.

• Enrollment jumped from 206 to 320.

• When classes and clinics began in January 1954, students enjoyed a modern facility with 94 operatories in the main clinic.

1968 – Ground was broken for “Dental Building II” now known as the Lyons Building.

1969 – The School of Dentistry inaugurated a dental hygienist curriculum in September.

$1M Gift Will Accelerate Cancer Research Process Courtesy of VCU Massey Cancer Center

Pam and Bill Royall are successful entrepreneurs with keen minds for business. As chairman of Royall & Company, a direct marketing company for colleges and universities, Bill Royall built a business by understanding the importance of efficiency in process.

Pam Kiecker Royall, Ph.D., previously chaired VCU’s Department of Marketing and now leads Royall & Company’s research division. Both have an expertise in finding bottlenecks in business processes that result in inefficiencies that can delay progress.

Introduced to Massey Cancer Center several years ago by a friend, the Royalls quickly appreciated the importance of Massey’s mission, and developed an interest in directing their support toward reducing the time it takes to get new treatments through the often-cumbersome clinical trial process and to the patients who need them. “The idea of using our business experience to help make important advancements in cancer research was extremely compelling,” says Bill Royall.

An initial gift in 2008 helped fund a new clinical trial and supported promising translational research, but the Royalls were still not satisfied that the more global process of clinical trials was being streamlined in the way they hoped.

“Additional conversations with Dr. Ginder and the Massey administration really opened some opportunities,” says Pam Kiecker Royall. “Further analysis showed that a few proposed changes could reduce key phases of the clinical trial life cycle from three and a half years to just 14 months. This was a proposal we could get excited about!”

“The Royall’s very specific interest ended up being a wonderful opportunity for Massey,” says Gordon Ginder, M.D., Director of the Massey Cancer Center. “Our partnership enabled us to take a new look at our obstacles and think about ways we could reduce or eliminate them.”

The result was a $1 million gift from the Royalls to fund a new system called Accelerate Clinical Trials (ACT) Now for Cancer Research, which will fund two new positions — an additional scientific writer to help investigators write and receive approval on clinical trial protocols, and a clinical trials budget negotiator to help navigate issues associated with trial costs.

“The two new staff positions will remove tremendous roadblocks for our researchers and allow them to focus on the science and turning that science into new ways to treat patients,” says Ginder. The scientific writer has already been hired and within weeks was moving trials through the system that had been delayed.

“ACT Now is already reshaping the process in the way the Royalls desired,” says Ginder.

“Our goal is the same as that of every supporter of Massey — to save lives and reduce suffering from cancer,” says Bill Royall. “We are thrilled to be able to contribute in a way that reflects our business model of working smarter to achieve goals.”

History of Philanthropy Leads to Unique Partnership By: Nan Johnson

It may sound unusual for an eye and ear institution to fund research and education in the area of orthopaedics, but for the Richmond Eye and Ear Healthcare Alliance, expanded philanthropy is part of its mission. Through its Foundation, the Richmond Eye and Ear Healthcare Alliance (REEHA) recently committed $500,000 to the MCV Foundation to establish an education and research fund for the Department of Orthopaedics.

The funds are earmarked for nearly a dozen resident laboratory projects, which involve both orthopaedic engineering and biochemical research as well as microsurgical nerve repair.

What originated more than fifty years ago as the Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital, Richmond’s premier specialty surgical center devoted to sight, speech and hearing, REEHA continues to emphasize community service, philanthropy and outreach to all those who need access to quality healthcare. Instrumental financial support such as this generous donation often serves to attract government grants and additional private funding.

“The Richmond Eye and Ear Hospital has a long history of supporting education and research in central Virginia,” said Dr. James Ferguson, Jr., Chairman of the Board of the Richmond Eye and Ear Healthcare Alliance. “In the early days, these efforts took the form of teaching residents in ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology and supporting research in those areas.

Wise leaders who preceded us envisioned a change from inpatient to outpatient service delivery and restructured the organization from a hospital to a surgery center. In a very real way we are still supporting education and research as we have always done, but are now focusing on the efforts that will yield the most benefits.”

Other beneficiaries of REEHA donations have included the University of Virginia Health System and the Eastern Virginia Medical School. After an analysis of the changing needs of Virginia’s aging population, the group identified orthopaedics as an area to consider.

“We are always looking for ways to support medical research and education,” according to Bruce Kupper, REEHA President and CEO. “We’ve had a longstanding relationship with MCV and VCU through teaching affiliations and residency programs. We’re both focusing on a broader range of initiatives to impact the entire

community and to advance medical care and make it more accessible to the underprivileged as well as the community at large.”

Adelaar, M.D., Chairman, Department of Orthopaedics, VCU Health System. “The impact of this gift is far reaching as we serve all populations, all ages, and all demographics throughout the state. From injuries to developmental conditions, our work involves the entire musculoskeletal system. We’re thankful for private donations, which help our educational and research mission. Funding has suffered in these economic times. This generous gift certainly helps and even encourages other projects.”

“As the specialtiy of orthopaedics moves the provision of services from inpatient to outpatient, we are hopeful and confident that this gift will enhance that transition to the benefit of other outpatient services,” Dr. Ferguson explains.

VCU Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is among the best for orthopaedic care and is the major trauma center for Central Virginia. The department will continue to forge these important partnerships with the community in order to provide the finest care to its patients, help to train the future leaders in the field, and perform cutting-edge research that is crucial for Virginia’s aging population.
