Dear Friends:

F

iscal year 2017 marked another strong year for the MCV Foundation. New gifts and pledges to the MCV Campus totaled $41.5 million, representing 53% of all funds raised across VCU. Our planned giving program yielded strong results with $11.6 million in expectancies. We’re also pleased to report that our endowment portfolio showed an outstanding return of 15.38%, outperforming the custom benchmark return of 13.02%.

There’s been a hub of activity on the MCV Campus. We’ve been working closely with Peter Buckley, M.D., the new dean of the VCU School of Medicine, and Jay Davenport, the new vice president of VCU Development and Alumni Relations. We celebrated the topping off ceremony for the unified VCU College of Health Professions building this fall, and we honored the VCU School of Nursing Clinical Scholars program at our December board meeting. You can read more about all of these stories in this issue.

Our strategic plan was approved by the board last spring, and we’ve been aligning our activities with our goals under our three main focus areas of fundraising, communications and stewardship. We hosted the largest crowd yet at our Discovery Series event in Williamsburg this past September, and we recently partnered with the Virginia Museum of History & Culture to launch the first panel discussion on medical history. We explored the history of human heart transplant at our first event, and panel members discussed the groundbreaking work of Dr. Richard Lower and his team on the MCV Campus. Some of the events we have scheduled for this spring include our annual MCV Society reception and the Harper’s Hope Golf Tournament and Auction.

We have also implemented our communications plan as our research showed that increased awareness of the foundation raises the likelihood of a person making a contribution. We hope you have seen our ads in various publications, online or heard them on the radio if you live in the Central Virginia region. This fall, we launched a new publication call NEXT that features some of the cutting-edge research being accomplished on the MCV Campus. You can stay updated on MCV Campus news by following us on social media or signing up for any of our publications or newsletters on our website at www.MCVFoundation.org.

VCU Health and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University celebrated the ribbon-cutting for their new Virginia Treatment Center for Children on Nov. 17. The two-story 119,000-square-foot facility opened to children and families this spring and is located on the CHoR Brook Road Campus in Richmond’s North Side. The facility is transformational for children’s mental healthcare, bringing VTCC’s services out of a 50-year-old institutional space and into a modern facility with an inspirational design that incorporates natural light, green space and unique safety features important to modern mental healthcare.

“It starts with need. You think about the fact that one in five children is impacted by some kind of mental illness that, if untreated, can affect their entire future,” said Sandy Lewis, Ed.D., VTCC’s executive director. “So you have this rare opportunity

to impact treatment and healing not only with the child, but the family. And when you do that, you have an impact on the community.”

Kiva Gatewood’s family has experienced that impact for many years already. Her son has been treated by VTCC since he was 3 years old, so to the Gatewoods, the new facility means the quality of the programing, treatment and diagnosis that they’ve experienced for years will now be matched by an equally beautiful, functional stateof-the-art building.

“The VTCC means the difference between our family being together and not being together,” Kiva said at the event in November. “It’s not just medicine, it’s not just mental healthcare. It’s actually a family. It’s a family of people who care about our kids as much they do about their own.”

— Kiva Gatewood gym, recreational areas, classrooms and gardens. For families, there is a Children’s Mental Health Resource Center. The research arm of the VTCC, the Commonwealth Institute for Child and Family Studies, is also housed in the new facility.

Clinicians, therapists and other caregivers at the VTCC provide occupational, recreational, art, music and play therapy.

There are also school programs for children who are in the inpatient units.

This new facility and the life-changing care, research and education that it enables are the result of $56 million in funding from the Virginia General Assembly and a dedicated community of donors and mental health advocates. Joel Silverman, M.D., chair of the VCU Department of Psychiatry, played an instrumental role in securing the state funding for the building.

In recognition of Dr. Silverman’s tireless work alongside many

others in securing that funding and bringing together donors and friends for additional support, we presented him with the MCV Foundation Robert Irby Award in 2016.

“Joel Silverman’s relentless efforts to create a flagship resource and facility to deal with pediatric and youth psychiatric challenges are legendary,” said Harry Thalhimer, MCV Foundation board chair. “He assembled a team of outstanding state leaders, including Eva Teig Hardy, Bill Murray, Bill Hazel and many others, to ensure that the necessary commitment from the Commonwealth was forthcoming — and the team delivered. To have that support from the Commonwealth of Virginia has been transformational.”

Dr. Silverman’s leadership has been vital, but there is still a need for more support. Remaining opportunities to

contribute include giving to or naming the inpatient waiting room, the kitchen and dining area, the main entrance water feature, education rooms, patient lounges, the doctors’ on-call room, the staff breakroom, leadership offices, unit playgrounds and private family visitation areas. An inspiring example of determination and leadership in raising funds for these types of needs thus far has been volunteer Martha E. Grover, who has helped generate more than $8.8 million in private donations to support the VTCC. “Improving the lives of children has been such a rewarding mission, and it’s been a great honor to help attract new donors to the VTCC,” Martha said.

Dr. Silverman’s department is also raising funds to expand the research faculty by recruiting a child psychiatrist with expertise in addictions. “We have a lot of really good research and services for addiction in adults, but most addictions start in adolescence,” he said. “We really want to be able to recruit a faculty member who can set up clinics for kids, do the research and then combine child and adolescent research with the adult

research to understand what the biology is of these addictions.”

Marsha Rappley, M.D., vice president for health sciences and CEO of the VCU Health System, told the crowd in November that the results of previous and future VTCC support will enable a tripling of the center’s capacity. “This is accomplished because of your partnership, because of people coming together,” she said. “Our children need us to do that. IN MEMORIAM

Jeanette S. Lipman

J

Jeanette S. Lipman passed away more than a year ago at the age of 102, but her memory and legacy live on. Though small in stature, her enormous heart and generosity for the MCV Campus spans decades and her impact will be felt for generations.

She was born and raised in Richmond and attended Thomas Jefferson High School. After graduating from Duke University, she married Eric Lipman, whose family escaped the Holocaust.

Jeanette helped him grow his business, Heathcote American, a company that imported German and English cutting tools for the tobacco and textile industries.

Jeanette and Eric suffered the heartache of losing their two daughters, Ann Debra Lipman and Carol Jean MacFarlane, to breast cancer at ages 38 and 40, respectively. This prompted the Lipmans to become involved with VCU Massey Cancer Center.

They established the Carol Jean Lipman MacFarlane and Ann Debra Lipman Cancer Research Fund in honor of their daughters and to advance treatment to help other families.

Jeanette was one of the original advisory board members at Massey Cancer Center and served on the search committee to recruit I. David Goldman, M.D., as director and successor to Walter Lawrence Jr., M.D., in 1988, as well as the committee that recruited current director Gordon D. Ginder, M.D., in 1997.

“Both Eric and Jeanette were very interested in philanthropy that helped people, particularly children, who came from humble backgrounds,” said Mike Gracik, longtime advisor and family friend. “Dr. Goldman had the idea of bringing a cancer outreach program to rural, underserved communities in

Southside Virginia, and one of the first things the Lipmans did was to fund his program. It was focused on breast cancer and became very successful. People in Emporia were getting better cancer care than people in New York City.”

Jeanette also worked closely with Massey’s current director, Dr. Ginder, who holds the Jeanette and Eric Lipman Chair in Oncology.

“Jeanette and her late husband Eric were extremely committed to VCU Massey Cancer Center,” said Dr. Ginder.

“She served as a member of our advisory board from its inception through her death, and her generous investment in science and medical research has had lasting impact on Massey Cancer Center’s growth.”

The Lipmans’ generosity extended beyond Massey to other areas of the MCV Campus. They became friends with George Vetrovec, M.D., former chair of the VCU School of Medicine’s Division of Cardiology, when Eric sought treatment for his heart issues. They soon discovered a shared passion for philanthropy, and the trio became a fundraising force for VCU Health’s Pauley Heart Center.

“I knew Jeanette for over 25 years,” said Dr. Vetrovec. “She was an enthusiastic supporter of the Pauley Heart Center, with a genuine desire to enhance knowledge, education and care for patients with heart disease. I had many conversations with Jeanette, often at her home as an add-on to a house call. She was intellectual, pleasantly blunt and incredibly insightful. My visits with Jeanette are cherished memories and I am extremely

grateful for the opportunity to have known her. She made a lasting impact on so many with her wisdom and philanthropy.”

The Lipmans’ gifts to the Pauley Heart Center include the Eric and Jeanette Lipman Research Professorship in Cardiology, the Hermes S. Kontos Professorship in Cardiology and the George W. Vetrovec Endowed Chair in Cardiology.

Jeanette Lipman and her grandson Aubrey Sage MacFarlane both suffered from asthma and were patients of Alpha “Berry” Fowler III, M.D., director of the VCU Johnson Center for Critical Care and Pulmonary Research. When her grandson passed away in a motor vehicle accident, Jeanette established the Aubrey Sage MacFarlane Acute Lung Injury Fund in his honor and in gratitude for the care they received from Dr. Fowler.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to have treated and become acquainted with Jeanette and Aubrey,” said Dr. Fowler.

“Jeanette honored Aubrey’s life in a way that will truly help other people. Her amazing gift of $1 million made the many years of our acute lung injury research possible. We’ve just completed Phase II clinical trials showing the success of intravenous Vitamin C as a cure for sepsis, and this treatment has already saved lives.”

Jeanette also served on the board of the MCV Foundation and was given our lifetime honorary trustee award in gratitude for her philanthropy and service to the MCV Campus.

“Jeanette was an amazing woman who left an incredible legacy through the broad swath of her involvement across our community. Her intellect and passion challenged us to

make a difference in so many lives. The magnificence of her involvement and giving continues even after she’s left us,” said Harry Thalhimer, MCV Foundation board chair.

As part of her ongoing legacy, Jeanette’s final gift of $2.5 million was received this past September. Her continued support of the causes she was most passionate about include $1 million for the Jeanette and Eric Lipman Chair in Oncology, currently held by Dr. Ginder; $500,000 for the George W. Vetrovec Endowed Chair in Cardiology to advance care through faculty support; $500,000 to establish the Cardio Oncology Research Fund, a partnership between Massey Cancer Center and Pauley Heart Center to examine the impact of cancer treatment on the cardiovascular system; and $500,000 for the Aubrey Sage MacFarlane Acute Lung Injury Fund to support Dr. Fowler’s research. $2 million of her gift is eligible for a match through the Glasgow endowment, bringing the total impact to $4.5 million.

Many of Jeanette’s gifts were made anonymously during her lifetime as she sought to focus the attention on the causes she cared so deeply about. She overcame profound losses and, through her resilience, turned personal tragedy into a means to quietly help others. We celebrate Jeanette’s life, legacy and incredible generosity that has so positively impacted all of us on the MCV Campus. Our thoughts are with her sister Maxine Flax and the dear friends who will greatly miss her gentle presence. ●

Awards Three Former MCV Foundation Trustees Named as Lifetime Honorary Trustees Harold F. Young, M.D., was a board member for 18 years. In 2015, he stepped down after 30 years as chair of the Department of Neurosurgery.

He has helped raise more than $30 million for the MCV Campus, and in 2003 received our Robert Irby Award.

George Vetrovec, M.D., was a board member for 12 years. In 2015, he retired from VCU Health after 39 years. A former chair of our Division of Cardiology, he led the campaign for the Pauley Heart Center and helped secure more than $14 million to support it.

In 2001, Dr. Vetrovec received our foundation’s Robert Irby Award. He is professor emeritus and continues to teach in the cardiology program.

Bertha Rolfe was a foundation board member for 18 years. She is active in the MCV Alumni Association, a former co-chair of the MCV Foundation Governance Committee, a School of Pharmacy alumna and former faculty member, and a member of the VCU Massey Cancer Center Advisory Board.

In 2011, she received our foundation’s Eugene P. Trani MCV Campus Leadership Award.

Four VCU Health and Community Leaders Receive MCV Foundation Awards John Martin (center, with his family) was selected as the 2017 recipient of the Eugene P. Trani MCV Campus Leadership Award. This award recognizes exceptional dedication and support of the MCV Campus.

John served on the MCV Foundation board for more than 20 years, chairing the communications committee and playing a key role in our foundation’s brand refresh by leading the brand research project.

John Duval (center, pictured with Harry Thalhimer and Jerry Strauss III, M.D., Ph.D.) was selected as the 2017 recipient of the Jerome F. Strauss Award. This award is given to a VCU Health administrator, faculty member or staff member who has demonstrated extraordinary service and stewardship to MCV alumni, donors or other members of the community to support and advance the mission of our foundation. John served as CEO of VCU Hospitals and Clinics and vice president for clinical affairs for 13 years. Under his leadership, VCU was recognized as one of the top hospitals in the country and the top hospital in Virginia.

Kenneth Ellenbogen, M.D., (pictured with his wife Phyllis) was selected as the 2017 recipient of the Robert Irby Award. This award is presented to a faculty member who has assisted with major fundraising efforts. As chair of the Division of Cardiology and director of clinical cardiac electrophysiology and pacing, Dr. Ellenbogen is a champion of the Pauley Heart Center and has helped raise millions of dollars from grateful patients.

C. Kenneth Wright (right, pictured with Harry Thalhimer) was selected as the 2017 recipient of the Michael B. Dowdy Award. This award recognizes a volunteer who has played a lead role fundraising for the MCV Campus. Ken is among our university’s greatest benefactors. In 2015, he made a gift to name the C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research. His total giving to VCU is more than $40 million. Read more about the inaugural C. T

his past October, we honored and thanked one of VCU Health’s longest-serving and most generous donors — the MCV Hospitals Auxiliary.

For more than 46 years, this group of volunteers, which now includes about 250 individuals, has supported MCV Campus patients, visitors and staff through service and fundraising. To date, the auxiliary has raised and distributed more than $6.2 million to advance patient programs, build facilities and train or support employees across VCU Health.

“You can see the extraordinary benefit the auxiliary has given us by being one of our major donors,” said Marsha Rappley, M.D., vice president for health sciences and CEO of the VCU Health System. “But they’re also the ones who bring a warmth to the experience that people have when they’re sick and badly in need of help. There are not only doctors and nurses helping our patients, there is a whole community of support represented in the auxiliary.”

In appreciation of that support, MCV Foundation President Margaret Ann Bollmeier presented a special award for volunteer leadership to the auxiliary at their board meeting on Oct. 5.

“We’re very pleased to be here today to give special recognition to the MCV Hospitals Auxiliary,” Margaret Ann said.

“About six months ago, the auxiliary was nominated for one of the four awards that our foundation gives every year. The nomination was incredible, and we decided to create a special award to recognize not only the auxiliary’s fundraising excellence, but also the volunteer leadership that the group has brought to the MCV Campus.”

The special award was created to recognize the hundreds of volunteers who are part of MCV Hospitals Auxiliary. It was given for exemplary leadership, philanthropy and dedicated service to patients and their families. ●

Leadership Council Moves Forward

O

ur former and current trustees gathered with MCV Campus leaders Nov. 13 and April 23 for the Leadership Council’s second and third meetings.

The Leadership Council was formed in 2017 to help former trustees stay informed and involved with important campus developments and foundation activities. Our trustees continue to serve as important ambassadors after they roll off the board, which is why we are excited to convene this important group.

Lifetime honorary trustee Austin Brockenbrough III is the Leadership Council’s first chair. The council will meet at least once per year, and members will be invited to participate in various foundation events throughout

the year to engage with staff and MCV Campus deans, directors and leaders.

MCV Campus leaders at the meetings so far have included Cecil B. Drain, Ph.D., dean of the College of Health Professions, who discussed his college’s new 154,000-square-foot building (read about the building on page 30); Joel Silverman, M.D., chair of the Department of Psychiatry, who discussed the new 119,000-squarefoot Virginia Treatment Center for Children (read about the center on page 4); and Allison Held, Esq., who shared her story of establishing a medical-legal partnership in support of patients at VCU Health. ●

2 017 WA S T H E 3 0 t h consecutive year that MCV Foundation board member Charles Crone organized the Massey Cancer Center 5K run in Williamsburg, and the event met its goal to raise $30,000 in honor of the milestone. Overall, the 5K has raised more than an estimated $275,000 and is Massey’s oldest standing community partner event.

Charles was new to fundraising when he began organizing the 5K in 1987, but he and his wife Ginny were runners, and seeing few compatible options where they lived, took advantage of the opportunity to create

something they loved — in a place they loved — that would benefit a worthy cause.

Each year Charles and Ginny enlisted more help from the Williamsburg community, and they did not slow down when Charles was diagnosed with lymphoma in 1993.

“In my humble opinion, if you’re a cancer survivor, your job is to help the next guy or next lady who gets diagnosed,” Charles told us recently.

“We were definitely inspired by the journey that we had been on.”

Charles has honored that creed ever since. In July of 1993 he joined

our board, and in that capacity has supported the MCV Campus for nearly 25 years. He and Ginny are among the MCV Campus’s most generous benefactors, mainly supporting programs to help improve patient care and treatment delivery.

Charles believes anyone can contribute in the ways he has. “Find something you’re comfortable with doing, whether it be the opera or a 5K run or a dinner,” he said. “If everyone would get involved in something like this, it certainly would make a big difference.” ●

ON SEP T. 2 6 , we celebrated our ninth gathering of healthcare discovery and dialogue with the Williamsburg community. About 200 people attended the Discovery Series event, which was held at Two Rivers Country Club and turned out to be our largest turnout ever.

The event was titled, “On the Brink of Discovery: Innovative Treatments and Cures at VCU Health.” Jerry Strauss III, M.D., Ph.D., former dean and current professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the VCU School of Medicine, led the discussion with a panel of three VCU Health researchers who are leaders in their respective fields.

Thompson Professor of Medicine, chair of the Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, and director of the Johnson Center for Critical Care and Pulmonary Research at the VCU School of Medicine, was the first panelist to share his research story. Dr. Fowler has developed an intervention that delivers high doses of Vitamin C intravenously to patients who are suffering from sepsis.

Richard Marconi, Ph.D., a professor of microbiology and immunology at the VCU School of Medicine, spoke next. Dr. Marconi’s work with Lyme disease has resulted in a vaccine for dogs and a diagnostic test for humans. He is working aggressively to bring a human vaccine to market.

Kathryn Holloway, M.D., a professor of neurosurgery at the VCU School of Medicine, was the third speaker. She formed a team in the late 1990s dedicated to understanding and perfecting a new procedure at the time called deep brain stimulation, which she now uses to treat Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and other neurological disorders.

“These ideas and innovations are amazing and inspirational, and I am so pleased that we get to share them with our friends and neighbors in Williamsburg,” said Harry Thalhimer, MCV Foundation board chair. “The format that’s been established for the Discovery Series really maximizes the experience because the MCV Campus doctors and researchers — all truly leaders in their fields — are able to simply have a conversation with the audience, explaining the intricacies and impact of their life-saving work.” ●

AT A T I M E when the need for nurses continues to grow across the nation, faculty shortages at U.S. nursing schools are limiting the number of new nurses who can be trained.

Fortunately, there is a program in place on the MCV Campus to help facilitate recruitment and retention of qualified nursing faculty through grants and other resources.

That program, which we honored and raised funding for at our December board meeting, is the VCU School of Nursing Clinical Scholars Program.

In 2012, Judy Collins, RN, WHNP; Barbara (Barbie) Dunn, Ph.D.; JoAnne Henry, Ed.D.; and Joe Teefey — all MCV Foundation board members at the time — began mobilizing alumni, foundations and individuals in the Richmond community to establish the program. Judy, who is founding director of the VCU Women’s Health Center and associate professor emeritus at the VCU schools of nursing and medicine, said she and the other early program leaders saw a need to support applied nursing projects because that type of scholarship generally receives less funding and fewer resources

than traditional research. Helping offset that challenge, the Clinical Scholars Program has raised more than $550,000 and supported five scholarly or educational clinical projects and three faculty recruitments.

“It’s been amazing and inspiring to experience this support for clinical nursing,” Judy said. “And it has been so gratifying to see these resources applied to recruiting and retaining incredible nurses who are doing amazing work.” Those resources have come from individual gifts and from foundations, including the Jenkins Foundation, the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation and our foundation.

To help bolster individual gifts for the program throughout the years, Joe Teefey, a former vice president of MCV Hospitals and former president and CEO of Virginia Premier Health Plan at VCU, has often announced matching challenges at events. At our December board meeting, he announced another impromptu matching challenge, which helped raise more than $30,000 from foundation board members and friends. ●

T

his past August, three patients at VCU Health who were battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) were the first in Virginia to receive a newly approved drug treatment, which is expected to slow the progression of ALS by 33%.

“I’m very grateful,” said Jerry Creehan, one of the three patients. “Thirty-three percent, that could be an extra two years, and that is the definition of hope.”

This summer, the Richmond community is invited again to be part of creating and sustaining that type of hope at the fourth annual Harper’s Hope Golf Tournament and Auction, which will be held June 8. The tournament supports the Harper’s Hope Fund, which has supported ALS research and patient care at VCU Health for four years.

In 2014, as VCU Health patient Vic Harper battled ALS, he and his family established Harper’s Hope. Vic said at the time that he wanted to look to the future to help those who would not be able to help themselves, and that goal has come to fruition since his passing. To date, through the annual golf

tournament, other fundraising events and individual contributions, more than $375,000 has been raised for the Harper’s Hope Fund.

“This event has not only provided resources and services to our patients throughout the Commonwealth, but it has helped VCU participate in clinical trials and bring hope to our patients,” said Scott Vota, D.O., who treated Vic in 2014 and is director of the Neuromuscular and ALS clinics at VCU. “It’s gratifying to see the fund doing so well and accomplishing its four goals: expanding the clinic, advancing research, supporting education and outreach, and creating an assistance program for patients and their families, which he really cared about,” said Vic’s wife, Anne Harper.

FOR THE FISCAL YEAR ended June 30, 2017, the foundation

received contributions of $21.2 million and planned gift expectancies of $11.6 million. Fundraising across the MCV Campus totaled $41.5 million this fiscal year, representing 53% of funds raised across all of VCU. We’re pleased to report our endowment portfolio showed an outstanding return of 15.38% in fiscal year 2017, outperforming the custom benchmark’s return of 13.02%. All of the major developed and emerging economies enjoyed economic growth during the fiscal year, and equity markets around the globe rallied strongly after the U.S. presidential election. The portfolio’s outperformance relative to the custom benchmark

during the fiscal year was widespread, as managers in each of the asset classes outperformed their respective benchmarks.

Since the beginning of 2012, the portfolio’s annualized return of 7.88% remains above the 7.33% annualized return generated by the custom benchmark.

With the university-wide Make It Real campaign in full swing, the foundation has a keen focus on bringing in new contributions through our partnerships across the MCV Campus and with VCU’s central development and alumni relations team. As of the print date of this publication, more than $590 million has been raised across the university toward the four-year goal of $750 million. ●

AT THE BEGINNING of the Great Recession in the late 2000s, Richmond business owner Bob Holsten called together his employees at EA Holsten Inc. to deliver an important message. “I’ve decided we will not be participating in this recession,” he defiantly told his employees that day.

“It was all attitude,” Robert Holsten, one of Bob’s three sons, said recently. “It was work a little longer, work a little harder, be more creative, be more aggressive.”

Bob’s boldness in the face of a global economic force that day was an example not only of how he led the family business for more than 30 years, but an example of how he faced an even greater challenge. “That was his attitude toward cancer,” said Bob’s wife, Deedle Holsten, when we spoke with her recently about Bob’s 13-year battle with prostate cancer. “Be aggressive and listen to the doctors. Whatever you have to do, do it.”

“He was always excited to know that there was a new treatment and was eager to try it,” said his son Brent. “A lot of treatments run their course and you have to move on to the next one, and with him he always had the belief there would be another one. He embraced it.”

The Great Recession could not beat the Holsten family — the company didn’t lay off one employee during that time — and while Bob passed away in 2014, cancer didn’t win, either.

Bob’s fight will continue and grow through the Bob and Deedle Holsten Endowed Cancer Research Fund, which Deedle, her

three sons and the rest of the Holsten family established in 2017 to support cancer research efforts at VCU Massey Cancer Center, with preference given to the area of prostate cancer research. “I’m hoping for a cure,” Deedle said. “I have three sons and five grandsons. I really am thinking about the future with them.”

As a National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center, Massey is among the top 4% of all cancer centers in the U.S. and thus helps lead and shape the nation’s fight against cancer.

Support from donors like the Holstens helps Massey pursue promising discoveries and ensures its physicians and researchers have the tools they need to deliver the best patient care backed by the latest research, ready to help those who will come to Massey as ready and willing to fight as Bob did.

“He told me there were a few days that he didn’t feel like getting out of bed, but he felt very sure that if he kept moving it was going to be better for him,” Bob’s son Austin said.

fter more than 40 years serving his community, 1972 School of Medicine graduate Don Sanders is still practicing family medicine in Central Virginia.

“I’m still doing it because I like doing it,” he told us recently.

“It’s really gratifying for me to know that I’m still important to people — they want to come to see me. Every day there’s a story that makes me feel good. I have 40-year patients who I have really great, lasting relationships with, and that’s a big part about being a family doctor.”

Relationships and connections like those that Don has with his patients are vitally important to the ongoing health of individuals and entire families who see family physicians. They also help cut down on healthcare costs by keeping people out of emergency departments. Unfortunately, though, despite the importance that family and primary care providers play in the community, a shortage of these caregivers is expected in the coming years.

To help address this shortage, the School of Medicine created the Family Medicine Scholars Training and Admission Tract (fmSTAT) in 2012. fmSTAT is designed to develop, nurture and support medical students who are committed to the pursuit of a career in family medicine by pairing them with physician mentors, offering them opportunities to attend

family medicine retreats and seminars, considering them for family medicine scholarships, and supplying other family medicine-specific support infrastructure.

One of the contributing factors to a shortage in primary and family care physicians is the fact that many medical students are enticed to pursue specialties where they can earn much more after graduation than family physicians can, which is why scholarships that can help ease the burden of post-graduation debt are a great benefit and motivator to students contemplating a career in family medicine. Recognizing this opportunity to stimulate interest among medical students, and inspired by the fmSTAT program in general, Don and his wife Terry made the decision in 2017 to make a gift of $25,000 to the fmSTAT program.

“I’m not sure if we’re going to inspire others to give money,” Don said. “But I hope we inspire students to go into primary care, and that’s why we’re glad that we made this gift.” ● To learn about how you can support students interested in becoming family physicians, contact Jodi T. I

n 2016, Williamsburg couple Nancy and Craig Canning were both beginning to enjoy the relaxation of retirement when they encountered the unexpected hurdle of anxiety and depression. Partners in every sense of the word, this was a battle they would face together.

Up to that point, they had no experience with mental illness and participated in their community through a shared love of music and history. Nancy plays the violin and is a retired high school social studies teacher, while Craig prefers the flute, clarinet and saxophone and is a retired East Asian history professor from The College of William & Mary. It was through his travels to Asia that they were able to adopt their daughter Leslie, a Chinese orphan. Now a grown woman with a child of her

own, they brought Leslie to the U.S. from Nanjing, China, when she was just 3 months old.

It was just after Thanksgiving in 2016 that Nancy and Craig found out their daughter was getting a divorce. For Nancy, this news triggered a level of anxiety that she had never experienced. “I got worried about her situation, and then I transferred that anxiety about her to anxiety about me,” Nancy told us. “What if something happened to my husband? What would I do? How would I handle our finances, remember all our passwords and deal with everything around the house?”

hospital in handcuffs. Craig told us, “In the beginning, Nancy spent a lot of time sitting on the edge of her hospital bed with her eyes closed, in pain.”

Doctors at VCU Health’s Department of Psychiatry tried treating Nancy with medication, but to no avail. They then suggested electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Though Nancy was initially reluctant, she started feeling better after the fourth treatment.

“We’re so grateful to Drs. Adam Rosenblatt, Ananda Pandurangi and Vasu Venkatachalam, all the people in the ECT program, and the staff in the geriatric psychiatry section who basically saved me,” said Nancy. “I’ve returned to my former self. playing the violin again. I joined a Scottish fiddling group and have formed a quartet with three other women. My favorite activity is to eat lunch out with my friends. We are indebted to the people on the MCV Campus.”

Nancy and Craig returned to VCU Health on an outpatient basis for her maintenance ECT treatments. They celebrated her last treatment in February as she’s doing so well with no sign of relapse.

“Every time we went back we saw how the staff worked so well together,” Nancy said. “They’re cheerful and warm and friendly, and you can tell people really like each other.

There’s a certain atmosphere there that’s hard to reproduce. The nurses and doctors always hugged me and it just makes you feel so good.”

In gratitude for the treatment that helped Nancy, the Cannings wanted to do something to show their appreciation for the doctors, nurses, social workers, medical students and staff in the Department of Psychiatry. They established the Craig and Nancy Canning Education Enhancement Award as both a bequest and current use annual gift.

“We liked the idea of an endowment because it will reach beyond our lives,” Craig said. “But we’re not the Rockefellers. We have some savings and consider ourselves fortunate. It’s a modest gift that we hope will help the staff.”

Craig and Nancy’s gift is an award that any doctor, nurse, social worker, resident or medical student in the Department of Psychiatry can apply for, with the goal of improving patient care in the adult inpatient and geriatric psychiatry units. The award will help cover various expenses related to continued education and training, such as giving conference presentations and participating in seminars and workshops.

Ananda Pandurangi, M.D., medical director and chair of VCU Health’s inpatient psychiatry division, is the head of the committee that awards the annual gift. “Since Craig and Nancy wanted the benefits of their generosity to start right away, four people were given awards this past December. These awards encourage young psychiatric providers to think about better standards of care for patients and develop projects and papers on that subject. We were able to help the Cannings and now they are helping us develop ideas — it’s a great partnership.” ●

COFFEE BOURNE remembers many nights as a student between 2014 and 2017, after studying during the day for 10 to 12 hours, when she would rock and nurse her daughter Elia to sleep while taking quizzes on her iPad. There also were many weekends of squeezing in quick reviews of class notes between taking her sons Luca and Dominic to basketball practice. And to make things more challenging in the most magnificent way, her son Judah was born in December 2016.

“When you’re a parent in school, everything just kind of blends together despite how much you try to keep a division,” Coffee told us recently. “We all went through school together. That’s something that everybody who’s gone through a program like this understands.”

Coffee, now 32, graduated from the Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice program at the VCU College of Health Professions in May 2017. Her experiences in completing the No. 1 nurse anesthesia program in the country are what inspired her and her husband Adam to support future nurse anesthesia students who will face the same challenges that they did. The couple has pledged $5,000 per year for five years to establish the Bourne Family Scholarship, which will be made available to full-time nurse anesthesia students who have dependents.

“As students, we have to give up our nursing jobs,” Coffee said. “That’s a pretty big income that just goes away. Loans can help with part of it, but never all of it, so you give up the special things, like vacations, going out to dinner, birthday parties and Hanukkah gifts.”

It’s these special things that Coffee and Adam hope to provide for future students through the Bourne Family Scholarship. “We’re not going to build a wing on a building or pay a tuition, but we’ll help someone,” Adam said. “Our attitude was, we don’t care what they do with the money, it’s just about helping someone buy presents, buy diapers or do what they need to do for their kid.”

In addition to helping the children and families of scholarship recipients, Coffee and Adam expect their contribution to make a significant impact on their own household. “We wanted to make giving a priority for our family as an example to our kids,” Coffee said. “It makes a difference to our children to know that we’ve made that a priority, and it will become a priority for them in the future.”

he MCV Foundation helped the VCU College of Health Professions celebrate the “topping out” of the school’s new state-of-the-art academic, administrative and research building on Oct. 16. Just before the construction team completed a major phase that day by placing the highest steel beam of the building’s eight-story structural frame, MCV Foundation board chair Harry Thalhimer addressed university leadership, faculty, staff, students and alumni who had gathered to celebrate the event.

“Today is a great day to celebrate the topping off of this game-changing and amazing new College of Health Professions,” Harry said. “These new facilities will add to and expand the improved footprint of VCU Health, putting us on the path to becoming the premier academic health center on the East Coast and beyond.”

The new 154,000-square-foot facility will, for the first time, centralize all 11 of the college’s academic units. Programs housed in the College of Health Professions consistently rank among the best in the country.

U.S. News & World Report named the Department of Nurse Anesthesia’s graduate program as No. 1 in the country again. The publication also ranked the school’s Department of Health Administration in the top three among its peers. Overall, five programs in the school are ranked by the publication in the top 20 in the U.S. “It has been a long road to get here and it is finally happening, so it’s a joyous time,” said Cecil B. Drain, Ph.D., dean of the College of Health Professions. In his 20 years as dean, Dr. Drain has made it a personal mission to

unite the school’s programs, which have occupied as many as 13 buildings in the past 45 years and are currently scattered among five buildings on two campuses.

The LEED Silver-designed building will sit on the MCV Campus at the corner of 10th and Leigh streets, with a west-facing eight-story wing and a south-facing four-story wing.

Each of the building’s eight floors will feature formal and informal spaces designed to promote interprofessional education and collaboration. The building will also feature cutting-edge learning laboratories for simulation, diagnostic technology, rehabilitation and counseling education. Flexible classrooms will promote student engagement and foster distance-learning opportunities.

State support was a critical component in getting this project started, but it did not cover the entire $87.3 million of projected costs for the new building. Therefore, individual gifts to the College of Health Professions can make an important difference. As health sciences graduates comprise 60% of the healthcare workforce, an investment here is an investment in better healthcare for everyone.

A

year of celebration culminated on Dec. 2 as the VCU Health Hume-Lee Transplant Center commemorated 60 years of milestones and second chances.

Organ donors, donation recipients, healthcare providers, friends and family gathered at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and shared stories about how the transplant center has been saving lives for more than a half-century.

Today, Hume-Lee is one of the busiest transplant centers in the nation, a fact that was highlighted on May 17, 2017, as VCU Health surgeons completed the center’s 5,000th transplant. The precursor to this milestone, and what is now the Hume-Lee Transplant Center, was established in 1956 as one of the nation’s first programs in solid organ transplantation.

David M. Hume, M.D., who performed Virginia’s first kidney transplant at MCV in 1957, was the program’s founding chair, followed by H.M. Lee, M.D., in 1973; Marc P. Posner, M.D., in 1997; and Marlon Levy, M.D., in 2015.

The center’s early team, which included Dr. Hume, Dr. Lee, Richard Lower, M.D., and others, completed work in the operating room and the lab that led to the development of surgical techniques that were adopted around the world. Their discoveries in tissue typing and immunosuppression, for example, led the way in saving lives through organ transplantation.

Dr. Lower’s team played an instrumental role in the world’s first human heart transplant, and later in the official legal definition of brain death, opening the door for successful deceased donations from brain-dead patients whose hearts continue to beat.

Dr. Hume was a member of the team that performed the first successful kidney transplant at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. At MCV, he performed Virginia’s first kidney transplant and initiated a kidney-sharing system with regional hospitals, which ultimately became the United Network for Organ Sharing. Today, UNOS facilitates all organ-sharing across the U.S. and is still located in Richmond.

Dr. Lee recognized the necessity for anyone who showed a need for organ transplantation to have the opportunity to receive donated organs, regardless of their social stature. As the president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, he successfully advocated for legislation to make the sale of human organs illegal. This position has become a standard that is considered a non-negotiable moral compass in the U.S. and is championed by experts such as MCV alumnus Francis Delmonico, M.D., who serves as an advisor to the World Health Organization on the topic of organ trafficking.

Another leader at Hume-Lee was Dr. Posner, who increased the center’s volume of care and improved the outcomes of its kidney and liver transplant programs, developed one of the first living donor liver transplant programs and began a pancreas transplant program for patients with Type 1 diabetes.

Under the current leadership of Dr. Levy, the center is breaking ground and implementing new techniques, such as the islet cell transplantation program.

“What started as an experimental living kidney transplant from one brother to another in 1957 has become a comprehensive and well-established multi-organ transplant program that has given the gift of life and a second chance to more than 5,000 patients from 40 different states and 13 different countries,” said Anne L. King, M.D., medical director of Hume-Lee’s Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program, at the Dec. 2 event.

“The story of the Hume-Lee Transplant Center is truly the story of transplantation in this country. This is not simply because ours was the first stand-alone clinical transplant center built in the nation, but because our founding fathers are the founding fathers of organ transplantation.” ●

strategic plan that will help Massey earn the National Cancer Institute’s highest designation of Comprehensive Cancer Center. Massey is currently one of only two NCI-designated cancer centers in Virginia. Vision 2021 will focus research in precision medicine; immuno-oncology; disparities in minority health research; and the role of obesity, metabolism and inflammation in cancer.

Dr. Gerry Moeller Appointed Inaugural Wright Distinguished Chair F. Gerard “Gerry” Moeller, M.D., director of the Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research, has been appointed as the inaugural C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Distinguished Chair in Clinical and Translational Research.

The chair is one of six created by a 2015 $16 million gift from Ken Wright. In addition to naming the Wright Center and establishing the six chairs, the gift established the C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Physician-Scientist Scholars Program, all of which are named for Ken and his late wife Dianne.

“It is a great honor to be selected to hold a chair that bears the names of C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright,” said Dr. Moeller. “Mr. Wright is one of the most magnanimous donors supporting clinical research at VCU, as was his wife before her passing. I personally owe a great debt of gratitude to Mr. and Mrs. Wright, as does the center that bears their names.”

In addition to directing the Wright Center, Dr. Moeller is internationally known for his translational research on impulsivity and addictions, using brain imaging as a tool for medication development. His addiction research has been funded since 1996 by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, and his work appears in more than 170 peer-reviewed publications.

The remaining C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Distinguished Chairs in Clinical and Translational Research will be awarded to faculty whose work promises to catalyze continued growth in translational research in the decades to come. Translational research focuses on multidisciplinary collaboration that accelerates laboratory discoveries into treatments for patients. ●

VCU Development and Alumni Relations Welcomes Jay Davenport Jay E. Davenport, CFRE, joined VCU’s Office of Development and Alumni Relations as vice president in September. In this role, he serves as VCU’s chief development officer and leads development and alumni engagement efforts for the university and for the VCU Health System.

Jay has had a long career in advancement, most recently serving as associate vice president of individual giving and campaign management at Wake Forest University. He has also been director of development and team leader at Rice University and held various fundraising positions at the University of Memphis College of Business and Wright State University College of Engineering. He began his higher education career as an assistant dean of admissions at Wittenberg University in 1995.

Jay has an especially warm place in his heart for our academic health center. His family learned about the power of healthcare philanthropy when his younger brother was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma at the age of 16.

“My family lived in Houston at the time, and we had access to a world-class healthcare system that helped him beat that disease with his first round of treatment. We realized our good fortune in having access to some of the best minds in the profession and some of the most outstanding nurses and healthcare providers.”

The disease came back with a vengeance a second time, and Jay’s brother ultimately lost his fight. “My family converted his college fund into an endowed fund to support research for childhood cancer. We realized the power of philanthropy and a research community and the changing force those can be.”

That experience helped fuel Jay’s passion for philanthropy in higher education. Some of his

top priorities for DAR include ensuring a strong finish to the Make It Real campaign for VCU and rethinking alumni relations.

“The MCV Alumni Association is certainly a program that we’re interested in supporting and helping to grow,” Jay said. “We want to find out what we can do to enhance longterm engagement, and we’re looking at opportunities to improve. We want to make sure that all our alumni have the most meaningful experience with their alma mater and are getting as much as they can from their degree.”

“For the longest time, we’ve had fundraising that was decentralized. Now we’re entering the realm of comprehensive fundraising where the same donor gets contacted multiple times,” he said. “Creating a centralized structure has been critical.

“The MCV Foundation is part of that structure. We have a very engaged foundation that understands the most pressing needs on the MCV Campus and how to reach out and respond to those. VCU has a unique history — we actually grew in reverse. We started with a fabulous medical college, added on professional programs and then added the undergraduate degrees.

Preserving and paying homage to that history is very important.”

When not involved in development, Jay enjoys spending time with his wife and three sons. Richmond is the perfect location for his family, giving them easy access to enjoy outdoor activities in the mountains and on the water. ●

Relying on People to Create Progress at the VCU School of Medicine: Catching Up with Dean Buckley Peter F. Buckley, M.D., arrived on the MCV Campus in January 2017 to begin his tenure as dean of the VCU School of Medicine and executive vice president for medical affairs at VCU Health. He served previously as dean of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.

Dr. Buckley explained to us that he believes the progress made during his first year in establishing a leadership team and beginning long-term strategic planning will be foundational for the school for years to come, and that his progress is based on the principle that “people really make the place.”

One part of that focus on people is recruiting and retaining a team of talented individuals, which has included filling senior posts in education, quality assessment, development and community outreach. In addition, Dr. Buckley established seven task forces that have kick-started the strategic planning process. These task forces, made up of individuals from across the MCV Campus and the community, have addressed key areas, such as physician compensation, research development, the interface between undergraduate and graduate medical education, the professional wellness of faculty, communications and media outreach, and the school’s partnership with the Veterans Administration. “I like to espouse an inclusive leadership

style, so this kind of process, leading into a broader strategic planning process, really reaches all corners of the School of Medicine and into the community,” Dr. Buckley said.

While a strong foundation for the future is taking shape, Dr. Buckley said the immediate future deserves our attention and celebration as well. This year marks the opening of the Virginia Treatment Center for Children’s new home in Richmond’s North Side (see page 4), the School of Medicine’s 180-year anniversary and the 100-year anniversary of the arrival of the school’s first female medical student, Innis Steinmetz.

As he reflected on his first year on campus and thought ahead to the next 180 years, Dr. Buckley left us with a message for the people who have made, and will make, those years successful.

“I’d like to take this opportunity, on behalf of my wife Leonie and myself, to publicly and profusely thank the Richmond and Commonwealth communities for welcoming us to this great state,” he said. “We have experienced an outpouring of wellwishes and support in our first year in Richmond, and we’ve greatly enjoyed meeting many of our alumni and civic and business leaders who have shown support and enthusiasm for the highquality education and legacy of this great medical school.” ●

Pink Ribbons of Hope Classic Raises Funds for Breast Cancer “There’s a lot of enthusiasm because everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer.”

I

n October, 150 attendees gathered at the Country Club of Virginia for a luncheon to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. This event began 20 years ago when a volunteer team of women who had experienced breast cancer or had family and friends with breast cancer decided they wanted to make a difference in their community.

“There’s a lot of enthusiasm because everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer,” said Judy Tuberville, event chair. “The focus is on fundraising, but we also want to inform the community about the resources available for treatment in Richmond at VCU Massey Cancer Center.”

Many of the men and women who attended wore pink and put their bridge and mah-jongg skills to good use to raise $20,000.

The luncheon included a tribute book honoring friends who had passed away from breast cancer, as well as practical information on how to contact the doctors at Massey or where to get a mammogram. Masey Ross, M.D., a medical oncologist at Massey, spoke about leading-edge research and treatments.

The Pink Ribbons of Hope Classic supports breast cancer research through the Women & Wellness Research Fund at Massey Cancer Center.
