Sunday 10th August

10th annual

Get ready for our biggest and brightest Festival of Fun yet! From its humble, cold, wet and windy beginnings in August 2014, Mountsorrel REVIVAL has grown into the amazing community celebration we have today, with something for everyone.

Familiar Favourites: From fancy dress competitions to the sound of brass bands on The Green, traditional village competitions in the MMC, classic vehicles at The Waterside, climbing wall at SVLC, to donkey rides on the main field. What’s your favourite?

You told us the axe throwing and the clay pigeon zone that were new last year were a hit so we’ve brought them back. You love some noise, so the Punjab Bhangra Crew, Sambando, Steel Band, Quorn Ukuleles and lots of other bands, dancers and singers are back again. All performances are FREE!

Fresh Thrills: Strap in for Zorb Football on the all-weather pitch, or take a spin in our mini Land Rovers on the main field. There’s an area with activities for those with disabilities at the Leisure Centre - and don’t miss the Hurricane fly-past!

Epic Eats & Treats: Our food court is bigger than ever! More seating, covered areas and new food outlets – YUM.

Marketplace Marvels: More stalls than ever with crafts, local produce and community stalls throughout the event.

Parade & Kick-Off: Line the streets from 12 noon for the legendary fun run, classic vehicles and parade starting from Carsa Cars. With dancers, live bands, community groups and more, expect noise and laughter as they make their way to The Village Green.

WAVE  SHOUT  CHEER  LET’S MAKE SOME NOISE

Your Guide to the Day: In this programme you will find a timetable of performances and activities; a centre page pull out event map; a ‘What’s Where’ with more details of all the stalls and locations, along with tips on parking, family facilities, quiet spaces, lost and found and more.

Let’s make 2025 the best REVIVAL yet!

A Brief History of Fairs and Galas in Mountsorrel by

Mountsorrel Heritage Team

Is it August already?

Then it must be time for Mountsorrel REVIVAL!!!

REVIVAL is the successor to the MOUNTSORREL FAIR

authorised by King Edward I in 1292 and held in June (and later in July).

The Fair was an eight-day event (Mountsorrel Community Team, are you up for that?) It ran successfully until the 1870s when the Lord of the Manor abolished it as celebrations had become a bit over exuberant for Victorian sensibilities. Despite that the Fair continued in a shortened form until the Great War.

Prior to the Great War the Fair was joined at Whitsuntide by fund-raising parades to raise money for beds at The Leicester Royal Infirmary. These continued through that war and into the 1940s only ceasing when the NHS was formed.

1914 Fund Raising Parade for LRI beds

After World War 2 there were carnivals and galas to raise money for various charities and local groups and mark events such as the Queen’s Silver Jubilee.

The main event throughout the 1970s/90s was the MOUNTSORREL GALA that ran very successfully organised by the village Sports and Leisure Association.

1982 1984

Mountsorrel Gala Programmes

Sadly, the GALA ceased due to the amount of work needed to be undertaken by a small (and in some cases, aging) Committee.

Today we are all able to enjoy REVIVAL. Starting in 2014, we are now set to enjoy the 10th annual Mountsorrel REVIVAL –sadly we lost 2 years to Covid restrictions.

Through the efforts of the Mountsorrel Community Team and their volunteers REVIVAL is a great successor to all that’s gone before.

Celebrating the 10th Mountsorrel REVIVAL

‘An old fashioned Festival of Fun’

This year we are celebrating the 10th Mountsorrel REVIVAL. Mountsorrel REVIVAL has come a long way since founder Ian Shonk first had the idea that became a reality on Sunday 12th August 2014. Since then it has become an annual event in the Mountsorrel calendar (except 2020 & 2021 and due to Covid restrictions).

From Storms to Sunshine

The weather could not have been worse for the first REVIVAL. Newspapers reported Hurricane Bertha as ‘lashing winds and fierce rain batter Britain’. Ian remembers the weather as ‘Biblical! The street was like a river’. Incredibly stalls were still set up. Ian tells how few braved the storms, until at 2.30pm the rain stopped with a dramatic line in the sky of black clouds one side and clear blue sky the other. As the line moved, it was as if everyone left their homes at the same time and descended on REVIVAL. Since then the weather has been kinder, although many will still remember August 2022 when temperatures reached over 30 deg. It also lead to the drama of the fire up on ‘the hills’ by the War Memorial, thankfully there was no long term damage.

Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT)

The Mountsorrel Community Team (MCT) formed in 2015 to run REVIVAL. Since then it has evolved, running, helping and being a part of many village events and celebrations including The annual Village Pancake Races, the Remembrance Parade, firework displays, Christmas light switch on and more.

Soap Boxes and Parades

An original highlight of REVIVAL was the soap box races ran by Ian Shonk. Ian went on to Soap Box fame when he headed a team who won the 2017 Red Bull Soap Box Challenge. With dwindling participation other activities now fill the space left by the soap boxes.

The first REVIVAL parade was 2016, with the time being dictated by bus timetables to fit between services, originally running in the opposite direction from The Green ending at Stonehurst Farm. The parade is a true reflection of everything REVIVAL is about. Music, dancing, noise, laughter, dressing up and most importantly the coming together of our fabulous Mountsorrel Community Here’s to the next Ten Years!

As we celebrate this milestone, we thank everyone who’s weathered storms, smiled in the sunshine, and brings Mountsorrel REVIVAL to life each year. Grab your bunting, don your best festival gear, and join us for another year of family fun-filled memories!

In Memory

Barry Utteridge 1946 - 2024

Barry Utteridge was a much loved member of our Mountsorrel Community Team. Alongside his wife Sandra, Barry was a founding member when the team was established 10 years ago. He served as Treasurer until 2020.

Barry and Sandra were also part of the Mountsorrel Sports Association who organised Mountsorrel Gala from 1985 to 1992 - a highlight of the village calendar during this time.

A passionate educator, Barry enjoyed a long teaching career, remembered fondly by students as a favourite teacher. Since settling in Mountsorrel in 1974, he was deeply involved in village life. He coordinated collections for the Air Ambulance, played for Mountsorrel Cricket Club, was an organiser of the village charity fayre, and served as Treasurer for the Mountsorrel Scouts Group until 1992.

In May 2024 Barry received the Commendation Award from Mountsorrel Parish Council for his service to the Mountsorrel community. Barry was unable to receive the award, but his son Mark received it on his behalf – a proud moment for all the family. As a lasting tribute Barry’s name is displayed on the Commendation Boards in the Parish Rooms.

QUIET ZONE

This event has been supported by the PPL PRS charity and community discount scheme. PPL PRS licenses the use of copyright music across the UK, giving businesses and organisations the permission they need to play the music they want.

Mountsorrel Heritage Group

This year the Group marks its 20th anniversary and is pleased to be a part of Mountsorrel REVIVAL once again.

On REVIVAL day the Museum will be open with our Geopark display that includes a floor map and information on the geology of the Charnwood Forest.

There will also be items relevant to past Galas and Parades preceding REVIVAL over the years, including the road race trophy. The castle model will be on show too along with a hands-on display of archaeology test pit finds. As usual we will be running our “wine or water” stall and will be selling plants too.

Our members will be in the museum and on the stalls. Come and talk to us and find out more about the Group, the Museum and our schedule of talks. You might even want to join!
