ear MCS Community,

We’re pleased to issue this 2025 annual report —an anniversary issue, in which we celebrate sixty years since Montessori Center School’s founding! As we reflect on the 2024-25 school year, we are filled with pride and a deep appreciation for all that our community accomplished together. It was a year of new beginnings, growth, resilience, and meaningful progress—a year that speaks to the heart of what makes Montessori Center School so special.

This was a year that marked the start of several important developments for MCS’s program and children. We launched our one-of-a-kind Montessori Spanish immersion program with the founding of a new Lower Elementary classroom­—Puerta Naranja (Orange Door). We expanded our enrollment capacity in the toddler program, opening Rose Door with 20 children in the fall of 2024. And we launched a new world language pathway in our specialist program—Mandarin Chinese.

Finally, we re-opened Emerald Door, doubling our Upper Elementary capacity, and welcoming teachers Andrew and Melinda to the Upper Elementary team. With these developments, MCS deepened our commitment to multicultural learning, expanded access and impact for children, and grew our vibrant, joyful, and curious community of compassionate change makers!

We want to take this opportunity to thank and recognize the incredible community of donors, staffulty, families, and volunteers, who have supported our programs and mission over the past year, as well as those who have demonstrated support throughout MCS’s sixtyyear history and evolution.

As we look to the year ahead, our vision is clear: to continue to nurture a love for learning in every child­ —by investing in our extraordinary teachers and by strengthening our programs and community. We are excited about the opportunities ahead and eager to continue building a vibrant, inclusive community rooted in time-tested Montessori principles and committed to future-ready practices in teaching and learning.

ust over two years ago, Jen Slemp stepped onto campus alongside fellow parents for her first MCS Back-to-School Night. Schools were familiar grounds for Jen. A former elementary and high school teacher, Jen knows the value of an outstanding education and was clearheaded and passionate about her decision to start her firstborn’s early childhood journey at Montessori Center School. Several trusted friends had sent their own children through the program. Jen had done her research on Montessori’s successful work in fostering deep multicultural learning, which she’s known since day one is part of the purposeful whole-child education she’s seeking for her children.

On that fall evening, Jen connected with Head of School Vanessa Jackson on the way down to the multi-purpose building for the evening’s open remarks. “I heard you’re thinking about launching a Spanish immersion program,” she turned to Vanessa. “I’m more than thinking about it!” Vanessa responded with excitement.

Jen beamed, “I want to help you. And I’m going to give the school some money.”

Later that fall of 2023, MCS received a $50,000 contribution from Jen’s charitable trust—the largest single gift in the school’s history.

IMPACT &

GROWTH Our Financial Priorities: Investing in What Matters Most The 2024-2025 school year marked a pivotal moment for Montessori Center School as we focused our philanthropic efforts on three core areas that directly impact our students’ daily experience and long-term success. With a goal of raising $450,000 and achieving 100% participation from our board of trustees and parent community, we strategically directed donations toward high-impact priorities for the school.

Investing in Teacher Leadership and Professional Growth Montessori Center School’s Leadership in Teaching project is a five-year capacity-building initiative and a commitment to nurturing the heart of our school—our teachers! Through this bold investment, MCS is building a vibrant culture of professional growth that celebrates curiosity, collaboration, and lifelong learning. The approach is multifaceted: From developing a school-wide Montessori teacher coaching framework, to funding our emerging lead teachers’ Montessori teacher training programs, and assistant teacher participation in Princeton Montessori’s TEP program, MCS is helping our staffulty members flourish as educators at every stage of their journey. We’ve also partnered with an AMS board member to support the learning and development goals of our Spanish Immersion team. We’ve welcomed MCS alumna teacher JoAnn Serpa to provide expert coaching and mentorship to our Primary teachers. And we’re covering the cost of child development coursework for our Toddler and Primary team members.

All of this work empowers teachers to keep learning and growing! MCS is investing in the longevity, efficacy, and joy of the teaching profession itself.

Thanks to the generosity of our donor community, MCS is able to dedicate funds each year to make this possible. Approximately 20% of families in the school accessed tuition assistance in 2024-25. This investment ensures that our classrooms reflect the diversity, curiosity, and spirit of the world our children are growing up to shape. Contributions to the Fund for MCS directly fuel this opportunity—strengthening the foundation of our school and the future of every learner who walks through our doors.

Deepening Our Commitment to Multilingual Learning The 2024–25 school year marked an exciting new chapter for Montessori Center School, as philanthropic support from our generous donor community made possible the launch of two transformative programs: a Spanish Immersion program and a Mandarin Chinese specialist pathway. At MCS, we know that language learning is a powerful tool for nurturing global citizens, and these milestones reflect the heart of Montessori education—honoring the richness of global cultures and fostering each child’s natural curiosity about the world.

Expanding Access to High Quality, Whole Child Montessori

Families at MCS now choose between Mandarin and Spanish as part of our world language offerings, beginning in Toddler and Primary classrooms. Through music, games, and storytelling, children are introduced to language in joyful, developmentally appropriate ways. As they progress through the elementary years, the curriculum grows to include reading, writing, and rich cultural study. Our new Spanish Immersion program provides a fully bilingual experience, currently available to Primary and Lower Elementary children, with plans to expand through 6th grade. Immersion students engage with the full Montessori curriculum in Spanish and English, achieving bilingualism and biliteracy.

From the founding families who continue to champion our mission after sixty years to the new parents who immediately embraced our culture of giving, every contribution has strengthened the foundation upon which our students build their futures.

Our board of trustees led by example, achieving 100% participation and demonstrating unwavering confidence in our school’s mission. Current families opened their hearts and wallets, understanding that their investment today creates the learning environment their children will treasure for years to come. Alumni families stayed connected to their MCS roots, ensuring that future generations of students benefit from the same transformative education they received.

The establishment of The Pink Tower Society, recognizing donors who contribute $5,000 or more annually, reflects the depth of commitment within our community. These leaders understand that exceptional education requires exceptional support, and their generosity enables us to maintain the high standards that make MCS truly special.

Margaret’s unwavering commitment to Montessori philosophy—emphasizing independence, freedom within limits, and respect for a child’s natural development­ —has been a cornerstone of MCS’s success. Her influence has extended beyond the classroom, as she fostered strong relationships and community among the countless students, parents, and teachers she inspired throughout her remarkable career.

with a heartfelt ceremony honoring Margaret McCleery Cota, a founding educator who dedicated an incredible 51 years to MCS (1969-2020). The ceremony featured the dedication of a California oak tree on our beautiful campus, symbolizing growth, knowledge, and the lasting 60th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

Jog-a-Thon for Glimmers: Service Learning in Action

O

n April 18th, our students participated in “Jog-a-Thon 2025: Run for Glimmers Childhood Cancer Foundation,” raising $25,000 for pediatric cancer research and support services.

This event honored the memory of Ava Decker, a beloved former MCS student who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2022 and passed away in 2024 at age 13. Before her passing, Ava founded the Glimmers Childhood Cancer Foundation to bring hope, support, and awareness to other children facing cancer.

Her mother, Vanessa Decker, had been a dedicated parent leader at MCS, chairing multiple school galas and working closely with staff and families.

Vanessa says, “We are so incredibly grateful to the MCS community for honoring Ava Decker’s life and legacy through their very generous support of her legacy foundation, Glimmers Childhood Cancer Foundation, supporting breakthrough kids’ cancer research, and planting a beautiful olive tree in her name.”

The jog-a-thon is such a time-honored and fun tradition for MCS. And now it’s an opportunity for our students to grow appreciation for the power and responsibility of being compassionate change makers in our local community.

This represents a shift in purpose for the jog-a-thon: Students get to run, run, run, cheer one another on, and experience service learning in action. As Head of School Vanessa Jackson noted, “Our students are not just running laps—they’re learning what it means to step up for others. This service learning event is a tangible way to show Montessori Center School students the power of compassion and being positive changemakers in their local community.”

In addition to the fundraising success, the school planted a young olive tree outside Ava’s former classroom, creating a living tribute to her joy, strength, and commitment to helping others. The funds raised support Glimmers’ three key initiatives: funding cutting-edge pediatric cancer research, supporting families at UCLA Mattel Children’s Hospital, and raising awareness for improved childhood cancer care.

n February 28th, over 230 guests gathered at the Rosewood Miramar Beach for our Diamond Gala, celebrating MCS’s 60th anniversary. The evening featured photography by Cherish Photography, music by Spanish guitarist Chris Fossek, and dazzling aerialist performances by MCS alumna Autumn Lotus’ Elevated Dreams.

The evening’s cocktail hour kicked off with an incredible silent auction. The silent and live auctions featured over 100 items, thoughtfully assembled into both standalone offerings and themed packages donated or secured by members of the gala committee and school community. With guests seated for dinner, MCS parent Tim Morton-Smith made his debut auctioneer appearance leading the evening to a record $197,000 in live auction earnings. The evening concluded with dancing and celebration, embodying the joy and community spirit that defines MCS.
