Roos aim for back-to-back titles The Deni Rovers are looking forward to a great year of netball in the 2019 Picola & District League season. The Roos had a stellar finish to the 2018 season, with the A grade netball side claiming their first ever premiership flag. The Rovers’ goal of back-to-back flags will present some challenges, with coach Grant Matthews stepping away from the role. The side will also lose shooter Gracie Berryman, midcourter Laura Gorman and defender Emma Lewis. It’s not all doom and gloom for the Roos though with A grade premiership winning player Carissa Bulmer (nee Thommers), a club stalwart, stepping up and taking over as coach of the A grade team. Bulmer said the squad has picked up a couple of players with

best and fairest winner Chrissy Hurst this year,” Bulmer said. The Rovers also claimed flags in the Under 15s and C reserve in 2018. The club has received strong interest in the junior grades with Mathilda Jacobs and Lucy Horne at the

helm for the Under 11s sides, and Alex Glowrey coaching the Under 13s team. The Under 15s side, which features a number of 2018 premiership players, will be coached by Nerisa Wills with Jemma Kerr as assistant coach. The Under 17s side

will be guided by two 2018 A grade premiership players with Chrissy Hurst as coach and Brittany Kirby as assistant coach. ‘‘The combination of such talented players in a coaching role will be an asset to develop this group of girls for a future in senior sides,’’ Rovers netball coordinator Brian Purtill said. The C Reserve team will feature a number of premiership players from 2018, and will be coached by Shannon Bulmer who is continuing her guidance from leadership in previous seasons. The coach of the B grade team is Tim van Lieshout, a wellrespected and experienced coach. Purtill said the club’s main task for 2019 is to continue its focus on junior development.

Dynamic duo aiming for a flag Multiple premiership player Amber Farley will join club legend Jodie Sefton as Deniliquin Rams A grade co-coach for the 2019 Murray League season. It will be Sefton’s fourth year in a row in the top job, having coached the side in a playing capacity on two previous occasions in the early 2000s and in 2011. It will be Farley’s second stint in the top job, previously cocoaching the A grade side with Chantall Barnes in 2006. Farley and Sefton hope to replicate the success they shared on the court, having won five premierships together for the Rams — one in 1999 as well as the historic four-peat from 2002 to 2005. Farley (nee Marshall) said her decision to coach was made to stay heavily involved

in the club as she questions her playing future. ‘‘I just want to stay involved as I love the club,’’ she said. ‘‘I coached the side years ago so it’s good to be back in that capacity. I’m also excited to have Jodie by my side to help out.’’ The Rams had a strong 2018 Murray League season, making their way to the grand final before going down to minor premier Moama in the decider. While it was a onesided affair, Sefton said she’s sure her side is ‘‘knocking on the door’’ of a premiership win. ‘‘We’re so much stronger this year,’’ Sefton said. ‘‘At our attacking end we’ll have Bec (White), Leah Blake and Amy Rodda. They’re all incredibly accurate shooters and

a critical part of our line-up. ‘‘Our biggest strength is through the midcourt, with Eleisha Bartlett, Amelia Seignior, Ella Harvey and new recruit Steph Birk all looking to run through the middle. ‘‘We welcome back Eliza Eastman this year after she had her baby. She’ll join Ella Park in our defensive end and will slot straight in with Emily Mildren going away for uni. ‘‘The strength of our midcourt will be the biggest factor for us this year. ‘‘If we’re going to beat the top sides, we’re going to have to beat them in the midcourt. ‘‘This is the strongest A/B squad we’ve had in the history of our club so our goal is to make another grand final and go one better.

■ Amber Farley (back) will look to share her experience alongside Jodie Sefton for the 2019 Murray League season. ‘‘It’s an exciting time for our club,’’ she said. ‘‘We’ve got outstanding juniors coming through the club and we should be near the top in most grades. We’d love to do what Echuca United did a few years ago (a premiership clean sweep in senior grades) and we’re on the right track for that.’’

Premiership players return The Deni Rams will look to youth and a handful of returning past players to turn their fortunes around in the 2019 Murray Football League season. The club collected its first wooden spoon in living memory last year and have appointed former premiership players Troy Bartlett and Sam Hall as non-playing cocoaches in a bid to move up the ladder. This will be Bartlett’s third stint as senior coach but his first in a non-playing capacity. It will be Hall’s first crack at senior coaching. The duo has retained the core playing group and welcomed back Anthony Bull, Josh Whelan and Nick Howe, who they played in a flag with in 2011. Other notable inclusions are midfield runners Ryan Brunker and Dylan East from Deni Rovers and former star Rams junior Henry Johnstone. Hall said they would continue to promote youth into the senior side as part of a longer term plan. ‘‘Our club traditionally has survived and thrived on playing our kids, so we wont be changing that. ‘‘We did bring back some experienced heads to add some body strength around the ground, which we probably lacked last year. ‘‘We have guys like Will Shaw, Jake McManus, Ryan MacDonald, John Bowie and Kyle Elphick coming out of the thirds and have had a big pre-season. They all look ready for senior footy which is great for the club. ‘‘Will (Shaw) and Ryan (MacDonald) did the full preseason with the Bendigo Pioneers which will no doubt improve their footy, and Will was selected in the final squad which is great. ‘‘We have our core group from last year — guys like Ash Morris, Ricky Gittens, Todd Gallagher and John Anstee who are all class players. ‘‘These blokes are all part of our leadership group and Anstee will captain the side.’’ Hall said there wasn’t any ‘‘soul searching’’ over the summer months but more so

■ Deniliquin Rams’ 2019 leadership group (from left) Ricky Gittens, Ash Morris, John Anstee, Todd Gallagher and Matt MacDonald. a real commitment from the playing group and club as a whole to look to the future and not dwell on the past. ‘‘To be honest, last season’s finish had probably been coming for a couple of years but as a club we just couldn’t stop it for various reasons. ‘‘But to the playing group and club’s credit, they’ve just got on with the job and we’ve put some structures in place to hopefully ensure were heading in the right direction. ‘‘We’ve had a really positive pre-season with good numbers on the track and we’ve really focused on having fun but at the same time ■ Josh Whelan will return to the Rams in 2019. working hard together. ‘‘Troy and I are already really proud of our players and how they’ve responded over summer, it’s a credit to them. Hopefully we’ll see that reward for effort during the season, without setting any lofty goals.’’ Other Rams coaching appointments for the 2019 season are Jake Cavallaro and Sam Callanan as reserves cocoaches, John Fitzpatrick and Trent O’Callaghan (3rds co-coaches) and Tim Hillier (4ths). Roos look to shake hoodoo After a disappointing end to the 2018 Picola & District League season, Deni Rovers coach Josh Bode has one goal in mind for his side this year — to win a finals game. The Roos managed a finals appearance last year, earning the double chance by finishing third on the ladder. They were unable to take full advantage however, going out in straight sets following losses to Picola United and eventual premier Rennie. The Roos will lose a fair bit of depth this year, with onballer Dylan Kerr, speedster Dave Smith, defenders Dylan East and Scott Atley, and young onballers Ryan Brunker and Blair Sartore all leaving the club. They will, however, gain former AFL player Djaran Whyman, who has signed on as an assistant coach, as well as ruckman Josh Flight and former club best and fairest winner Rhys McCulloch. ‘‘Djaran brings a lot of experience to the side and is a very strong communicator,’’ he said.

■ Onballer Nathan Kerr is set for another strong year at the Rovers. ‘‘He’ll be a great asset to the side with his on field leadership. ‘‘We’ll look to play him forward, where he has played the majority of his career. He’s 35 now but he still has a few years left in him to play well at our level. ‘‘Adam Bodey will be travelling overseas next year so we’re very happy to have Josh Flight back at the club. ‘‘Flighty will share the ruck duties with James Kirby and we’ll have Rhys come back in

to add some run through the middle of the ground. ‘‘We’ve tried to target locals with both Flighty and Rhys playing senior and junior footy with the Rovers in the past. ‘‘Compared to last year the quality is still there, but the depth has dropped off.’’ Bode also sung the praises of 2018 recruits Des Morgan, Ricky Waters and Nathan Kerr heading into the season. ‘‘Des Morgan has lost 15kg since the season ended and will be a real asset this year,’’ he said. ‘‘Ricky Waters has been training the house down as well. ‘‘We have a lot of work to do if we want to win a finals game, but I believe we can do it. ‘‘We have a lot of blokes from 20 to their mid 20s and a few experienced heads, so there’s a good mix there.’’ The Rovers’ preparation for the season kicked off with an intra-club clash and one practice match leading into

round one, where they faced Maldon Football Club at Memorial Park. ‘‘We wanted to get at least two games into our senior players, but we had one team pull out of a practice match,’’ Bode said. ‘‘It’s going to be close this year at the top and I’d expect us to be thereabouts for finals. ‘‘I’d be very disappointed if we don’t make finals and if we don’t break the drought of winning a final. ‘‘We’ve got a tough start to the year with Berrigan in round one, but I’m hopeful that we can kick things off with a win.’’ Ins: Djaran Whyman (Rumbalara), Josh Flight (White Hills), Rhys McCulloch (year off). Outs: Dylan Kerr (Fitzroy Allstars), Peter Lewis (Springbank), Dave Smith (Rumbalara), Ryan Brunker, Scott Atley, Dylan East, Blair Sartore, Brodie McQuie, Logan Ives (Deni Rams), Adam Bodey (year-off).

Major changes at Blighty Blighty Netball Club’s A grade side will again be led by playing coach Molly Cochrane for the 2019 season. It will be Cochrane’s third year in the coaching role, with the board deciding to keep the 23 year-old after she lead the Redeyes to two consecutive preliminary final appearances in the Picola & District League. The agile defender said it was a good feeling to have the backing of the club in leading the A grade side once again. ‘‘It shows they have the confidence in me to lead the senior players, and I am really looking forward to it,’’ she said. ‘‘I felt as though last year was a really good challenge and I am looking forward to it again, it’s such a great environment out at Blighty. ‘‘The main goal (for 2019), as with every team, would be to first make finals and then to capitalise on that opportunity and have a really good final series.’’ It’s been heartbreak for the Redeyes the past two seasons, falling one game short of a grand final appearance in 2017 and 2018, going down to rival Deni Rovers in the preliminary final on both occasions. Last year’s loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Redeyes, heading into the clash as favourites to win. But Cochrane is looking to turn a negative into a positive, saying the side will use that loss as a motivation for the 2019 season. ‘‘I think we all left that game a little deflated knowing we didn’t play the best we could,’’ she said. ‘‘In saying that I was still very proud of everyone in the team making it that far in the final series but we will use that loss and remember the feeling of that loss to push us again this year.’’ Blighty’s playing squad will see big changes in 2019, with 11 players joining and 12 players leaving the club in the off-season. Included in those players leaving the club is reigning League Best and Fairest winner Rhiannan Maxwell, midcourter Demi Blake and shooter Chelsea McNamara.

Cochrane is still confident about the year ahead however, saying the girls joining the club will have a big impact. ‘‘Jess Crick has recently moved to the area, previously playing for Henty Netball Club,’’ she said. ‘‘She has shown some great skills throughout training and we are excited to see what she can bring this year. ‘‘Deni McKenzie has also moved to the area, she is a shooter who can also move to the midcourt, previously playing for Swan Hill. ‘‘We have also picked up some young players like Zoe Stephens, Keeley Coates and Theodora Miaoudis. ‘‘Zoe is a strong defender, who is very agile and can also play in the midcourt and Keeley is a very accurate and fit shooter who we can’t wait to see move around the goal ring. ‘‘Dora (Miaoudis) has commitments with football over in Bendigo but when she is home we will happily welcome her onto the court. ‘‘We have welcomed some ■ A grade playing-coach Molly Cochrane. new faces and also have some juniors to step up into the senior ranks. We also have the depth in our under 17s and under 15s who will be able to step up and play in our senior squad if required.’’ The club will welcome Gaye Maxwell as a fitness and netball mentor for the 2019 season Blighty also announced their other coaches in the rest of their netball grades. They are as follows: Alana Coates (B grade and Under 15s), Kristeen Culton (C grade), Temeka Macdonald (C reserve), Melissa Westcott (U17s) and Theodora Miaoudis (U13s). Ins: Jess Crick, Zoe Stephens, Keeley Coates, Theodora Miaoudis, Lauren Swadesir, Deni McKenzie, Mikaila Ackers, Lizzie Grant, Janice Behsmann, Brooke Griffiths, Jessima Munro. Redeyes aiming for decider Blighty has its eyes on a grand final berth in the Picola & District Football League this year. The Redeyes finished short of the decider in 2018, suffering a heavy defeat to Picola United in the preliminary final. After signing on as the club’s coach for a second season, Jack Tyndall has built what he believes can be a side that can go one step further in 2019. This year the Redeyes will have promising young Finley talents Liam Osborne and Dylan Maxwell coming back to the club, as well as former Blighty junior Darcy Morris who spent 2018 at the Deni Rams. Blighty will also welcome Wakool onballer Kevin Kerr, Trentham midfielder Paul Smith, 2016 club best and fairest winner Josh Peers, former Blighty junior David Chalmers and Rams junior Tyler Amor-Beale, and key position swingman Charlie Simpson will also return after a year away from the club.

■ Blighty skipper Sam Singleton (third, from left) with recruits Paul Smith, Liam Osborne and Dylan Maxwell. ‘‘Young Dylan Maxwell and Liam Osborne haven’t missed a training so far,’’ Tyndall said. ‘‘Dyl (Maxwell) trained with us last year and there is a massive size difference from that time. His body is ready to go and he should slot straight into a key defensive position in the senior side. ‘‘Liam (Osborne) is quick and has some of the best skills out there. We’ll look to play him on a wing to utilise his pace. ‘‘Kev (Kerr) is relatively

new to the area and he too hasn’t missed a training. ‘‘Darcy (Morris) is a player we identified that we wanted early. We heard good things about him playing at senior level at the Rams so we were hopeful that we would get him back to his home club. ‘‘All of these recruits will give us more rotations through the middle as well, so we’re quite happy with where we’re at. ‘‘We’ll be aiming for a top four finish again this year, with anything less being very

disappointing. We don’t want to go backwards this year.’’ Blighty will enter the season with a new leadership group with Matt Jackson and Tanner Robertson signing on as an assistant coaches and onballer Sam Singleton named as captain. ‘‘Sam (Singleton) is a great leader and leads by example on the field,’’ Tyndall said. ‘‘He’s an absolute pleasure to play with. When I asked the playing group who was willing to play the full six quarters in our practice match against the Deni Rams he put his hand up without hesitation showing his leadership skills and that he was right for the job.’’ Ins: Paul Smith (Trentham), Liam Osborne, Dylan Maxwell (Finley), Darcy Morris (Deni Rams), Kevin Kerr (Wakool), Charlie Simpson, Josh Peers, David Chalmers (year off), Tyler Amor-Beale (rugby union), Luke Hay. Outs: Jed Brain (Chelsea), Ryan Chadderton (retired) and Cody Jordan (moving away).

We welcome all new and existing players to the club for the 2019 season.

This year is shaping as an exciting one, on and off the field, with junior development being our main focus.

Club legend to lead Drovers One of the best players in Deniliquin Drovers history will take over as coach for the 2019 Southern Inland Rugby Union season. It is the first stint in the role for four-time best and fairest winner Mark Thompson. The Drovers Life Member had a stellar career playing for the Drovers, taking out the SIRU Division Two best and fairest B Castle Memorial Trophy in 1994. Thompson also played in the 1997 premiership winning Drovers side, claiming a club record four best and fairests in 1992, ‘95, ‘96 and ‘98. The former second rower takes the reins from Joe Gogarty, who has coached the side for the past three seasons. It included the club’s 10 year drought breaking flag in 2017. While still being heavily involved with the club since hanging up the boots in 2007, it was his son Zack making the code switch from Aussie rules that encouraged Thompson to coach. ‘‘I have thought about coaching for a while and with

while, so they should be used to it.’’ While it’s only his first year coaching the side, Thompson’s goal for 2019 is another premiership for the Drovers. ‘‘We have a good core and good group of players, so if we can expand on that we can go at least one better than last year,’’ he said. ‘‘The side made the preliminary final last year so

we’ve got the talent that can get the job done. ‘‘What I want to see though is more people down at the club, whether it be current players, new players, old players or supporters. ‘‘We also want to have a focus on families and juniors at the Drovers so we can try and run a bit of a junior program.’’ The Drovers start their season with a road trip to face rival Hay on Saturday, April 27. The club trains from 6.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Rotary Park. New players are always welcome. Drovers draw: April 27, Hay v Deni; May 4, Griffith v Deni; May 11 and May 18 bye; May 25, Deni v Tumut; June 1 Wagga City v Deni; June 8, bye; June 15, Wagga Ag College v Deni; June 22, Deni v Wagga Waratahs; June 29, Deni v Hay; July 6 Deni v Griffith; July 13, bye; July 20, Tumut v Deni; July 27, Deni v Wagga City; August 3, Deni v Wagga Ag College; August 10, Wagga Waratahs v Deni.

Golden year ahead for boxing club Golden Rivers Deniliquin RSL Boxing Club will aim to hold three ‘fight night’ events in 2019. After being unable to host an event in 2018, club president Roy Lynn is eager to return to the glory of 2017 when the club hosted two successful fight nights. Some boxers are expected to be travelling to Deniliquin from Shepparton and Wagga to participate, with the ring to be set up in the RSL Club’s Dunlop Room. Lynn, who is also the head trainer of the club, said while the fight nights are still yet to scheduled he does expect the card will be filled with local boxers. ‘‘All are very fit and well prepared for the event,’’ he said. ‘‘It will be great entertainment and we’d love a big crowd of locals supporting our boxers.’’

■ 2018 award winners (back from left) Heather Rose, Molly Curtis, Jess Wills, Blake Charlton, Waylon Crowe, Luke Charlton, Riley Foord, Damon Free, Aaron Woods; (front) Baydon Walker, Lincoln Crowe, Teagan Walker, Tahlia and Eliza Johnson and Danny Barnes. Expected to compete throughout the year are Blake Charlton, Riley Foord and Lachlan Dunn. Golden Rivers president Roy Lynn said he was proud of Charlton’s efforts saying he is one of the club’s great fighters. ‘‘Blake tries so hard and works very hard,

he always fights the best,’’ he said. ‘‘In five fights it’s been two wins and three losses, each by a point. ‘‘Riley Foord also made his official debut last year so we’re expecting big things out of him.’’ In great news for the club, it will also have its own promoter after

Travis Rochford earned his promoter’s license last year. ‘‘Travis works extremely hard for the club and we can’t thank him enough for what he does,’’ Lynn said. ‘‘For him to take on this role just shows the kind of hard-working person he is. ‘‘We are still looking

for more referees and judges for our upcoming shows though.’’ Golden Rivers will again hold courses for those interested in becoming a qualified referee and/or judge. The Golden Rivers Boxing Club was formed by Lynn in 1998, first at Wakool and then relocating to Deniliquin. Local training is held in the Golden Rivers Boxing Club’s rooms located in Duncan St, adjacent the Deniliquin RSL Club. Boxers meet from 6.30pm to 7.30pm each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Lynn trains on Monday and Wednesday, Jamie East on Tuesday and Paul Johnstone on Thursday. For fight night information contact the Deniliquin RSL Club on 5881 1455 or Lynn on 0400 343 758.

Deni’s AFL stars set to shine Deniliquin’s level of talent in sport has never been greater, with two homegrown Deni boys playing in the AFL in 2019. Former Deni Rams players Sam Lloyd and Todd Marshall are both expected to feature heavily in the 2019 AFL premiership season. Lloyd is keen for a fresh start in his career, after joining the Western Bulldogs during the AFL Trade Period last year. The former Deni Ram arrived at the Bulldogs via a trade with Richmond in October, opening up potential of more game time at senior level. He said while his time with the Tigers was enjoyable, playing 57 career games at the club, the Bulldogs provided an opportunity for a fresh start with a young list full of potential was one of many factors in the 28 yearold’s decision to make The Kennel his home. The 180cm Lloyd, who will wear no. 22 for the Dogs, impressed in his first two hit-outs at his new club the JLT Community Series. Lloyd managed 17 disposals but didn’t hit the scoreboard in the first game against Gold Coast. He showed his full potential against St Kilda in week two, kicking two of his three goals in the space of 90 seconds in the third term to bring his side into the contest. Lloyd also managed to collect 18 possessions to be named among the club’s better players on the day. While playing the majority of his time in the middle of the ground at VFL level the past two years, Lloyd will bring experience in to the Dogs’ forward line. ‘‘I obviously started my career up forward

■ Todd Marshall in action during Round 1 in ■ Sam Llloyd in pre-season training. Photo courtesy Western Bulldogs FC. 2018. Photo courtesy James Elsby/AFL Media. and played most of my footy there,’’ he said. ‘‘Over the past couple of years at Richmond I moved into the midfield which I really enjoyed. ‘‘I’m probably a forward at heart, I guess. I’m probably looking to play a bit forward and then pinch hitting in the middle when they need me. ‘‘It was good to get onto the end of a few in the pre-season. To kick three goals was a positive but I’ve got a lot of improvement to do (for the season ahead). ‘‘They’re fantastic blokes (at the Bulldogs), really laid back. I can just tell it’s a really great vibe here already. It’s been really impressive how easy going and approachable everyone has been.’’ Marshall will enter his third season at Port Adelaide with the mindset to secure a key

Page 16 — ’Winter Sports’, March 2019

position forward role at the club. The 20 year-old signed a two-year extension on his contract at the start of 2018, with plenty of potential being seen from his coaches. The 198cm forward had a tough 2018 however, missing eight games due to personal reasons, along with the final seven rounds with a foot injury. With a third preseason, Marshall is set for a break-out year in 2019. ‘‘I was never going to leave Port,’’ Marshall said. ‘‘I wanted to get the contract talks out of the way early and just focus on my footy.’’ Marshall showed early signs in 2018 that he is set to be a star in the AFL, equalling a footy record for Deniliquin footballers who’ve made it to the ‘big time’ with four

goals against Fremantle in Round 1. The former Rams junior backed this performance up the following week with an impressive showing against the Sydney Swans. The Power overcame a 14-point deficit at half time to stun the Swans in the round two, with Marshall having a massive influence on the outcome. He top scored for the Power for the second week in a row, kicking 3.1, as well as having eight score involvements. At the final siren Marshall had finished up with 12 possessions (nine contested), three marks and two inside 50s after spending just 52 per cent of the match on the field. Marshall’s biggest impact came in the third term, kicking two goals within three minutes.

The Power forward was referred to as a ‘‘danger man’’ by commentator and 1988 Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy following his third goal, where he took a strong contested mark against veteran defender Heath Grundy on the behind line. After a score review confirmed Marshall had marked the ball in the field of play, he lined up on a tight angle, snapping on his non-preferred left boot for a goal. In comparison to those games, Marshall had a relatively quiet start to the year in the JLT Community Series. He managed just one goal and 17 disposals in total over the two games Port played in. Both Deni players were picked in round one of the AFL season this year, with both aiming to play full seasons in 2019.

Rugby comp. for our juniors The Southern Inland Rugby Union manages both a senior and junior competitions, running from March to September each year. This year, the Deniliquin Drovers Rugby Union Club is actively encouraging young locals to get involved in the junior competition. Juniors paricipate in gala days throughout the season, usually held fortnightly and on a Sunday and which can run for a full day or half day. There are nine gala days throughout the season, followed by a two week finals series. With age groups from Under 6 to Under 16, and both tackle and Touch7s competitions, each gala day is nonstop over a range of fields. Former Drovers president Tim Strong will be assisted by former coach Joe Gogarty to coordinate the junior competitions for the Drovers. Deniliquin players will fold in to play with Hay Cutters juniors — the Whipper Snippers — in the competition. Strong said participating will provide great opportuni-

ties for young locals interested in the sport. ‘‘We’ve been running casual kids rugby at Deniliquin Rotary Park after junior soccer during previous seasons, and we can have anywhere between six and 15 children take part,’’ he said. ‘‘We have attended the gala days before in an unofficial capacity and really enjoyed it, so we wanted to do more to get the kids involved.’’ The club will arrange transport for local juniors wanting to take part, with the method dependent on the numbers attending. To be involved, contact Strong on 0429 841 642. Junior Gala Day draw: March 31 – Wagga Wagga; April 14 – Griffith; April 28 – Albury ; May 12 – Leeton; May 26 – Hay ; June 16 – Cootamundra; June 30 – Temora; July 21 – Griffith; August 4 – Albury. Upgrades to give stadium more sporting options Deniliquin Sports & Entertainment Stadium could receive a huge re-vamped this winter. Upgrade plans for the statadium are already complete, and the Deniliquin Sports Park Inc group manager John Arthur said the final step is to appoint a contractor through a tender process. The project will include an extension to the stadium to create a second court with all associated amenities, including scoring facilities and team benches. It will add 25m width to the building. Another significant part of the project is replacing the existing floors. ‘‘We will be installing the same quality of flooring that was used for the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast,’’ Arthur said. ‘‘It will cost a lot of money, but it will give us the best quality floor outside of the major cities. ‘‘The new extension will have a concrete floor with a special state-of-the-art spring surface. ‘‘Currently the floor is stumped and there have been a few problems with movement, particularly in the last five years. ‘‘Again, this may be more expensive but it will last for the next 20 to 30 years. ‘‘The design will also include new synthetic grass for an indoor cricket and netball court, with the gymnastics area doubling in size. ‘‘With the extra room we’ll be pushing hard for new gymnastics apparatus. ‘‘These extensions mean we will likely see sports like volleyball, dodgeball and indoor cricket return. I’m especially excited about the indoor cricket. It’s a sport a lot of people enjoy and we will hopefully be able to start up another competition.’’ More than $1 million has already been allocated toward the stadium upgrade, including $503,000 from the Liquor & Gaming NSW ClubGrants infrastructure

Another $40,000 is being held in reserve by the Deniliquin Community Group, from its 2017 Bendigo Bank community grants allocation. Located on the corner of Ochtertyre St and Wirraway Drive in Deniliquin’s south, the stadium is well known for being the home of a massive range of sports. Ladies indoor netball is held each Tuesday and there is also a mixed netball competition for people aged 35 and over. Mixed netball is played on Monday nights, ladies basketball takes place on Tuesday nights and men’s basketball is held on Wednesday nights. Junior sports are also held during the week, with junior basketball and Deni Hoops (introduction to basketball) on offer. The stadium upgrades will also see benefits for all clubs already involved in the stadium with Deniliquin Badmin-

ton, Deni Dodgers Lifeball, Deniliquin Giants junior basketball teams and the FUTSAL competition all given more room to play their respective sports. Deni Sport Stadium is also a great place to hold a function or event, ranging from birthdays to an award presentation ceremony. ‘‘We can accommodate everything from exhibitions to parties, especially once this upgrade is completed,’’ Arthur said. ‘‘We’re a community venue and anyone can hire the stadium.’’ For more information, contact the stadium on (03) 5881 4100. ● ● ● As Deniliquin Outdoor Pools Group manager, Arthur said the Deniliquin Swim Centre is another place locals can keep fit in winter. While the weather will be cooler, the local swim centre’s hydrotherapy indoor heated pool is open seven days a week, with swimming lessons on offer.

‘‘We run swimming lessons for all ages,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s a great way to prepare for summer so people can have the skills to enjoy the water in the hot weather. ‘‘Swimming is a skill you have for life so we want to ensure that we can help with water safety as much as possible. ‘‘We only use Austswim accredited swim teachers and have all the necessary safety equipment like oxygen tanks, spinal boards, two defibrillators and neck braces in case something were to go wrong. ‘‘We also carry out extensive water testing numerous times a day in both the hydro and outdoor pools to ensure the water quality and the safety for patrons.’’ Deniliquin Swim Centre is located in Poictiers St, Deniliquin. Find the centre on Facebook to keep up to date with all the latest news or for more information, or to make a booking, contact the centre on 5881 8586.

Golfing success continues As we move through autumn and into winter the golfing action continues at the Deniliquin Golf Club with weekly events and special tournaments. The continued resurgence in golf is making Deniliquin Golf Club one of the most successful sporting organisations in the region. It’s a trend that should continue over the autumn and winter months. The golf course is in superb condition and as well as attracting many visitors, especially from Victoria, it is becoming the number one sporting venue for lots of locals. Over the coming months there will be a host of golfing events to keep avid golfers busy. In May there will be the popular Corporate Fundraiser Day on Friday, May 10, followed closely by the IGA Deniliquin Open on Sunday, May 12. One of the most popular events each year is the Winter Classic, played over the June Queen’s Birthday holiday weekend. This is a 36 hole fourball best ball stableford. Details of all golfing events can be found under the tournaments tab on the clubs website, www.denigolfclub.com.au or by calling the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333. However, the course is a challenge for all level of players. Poor shots will find the huge trees which line most fairways, or the abundant water holes scattered around the course. Ticket selling starts at 6pm and the draws are from 7.30pm. Happy hour is every Friday night from 6pm to 7pm. Social bowls a winter hit

The action never stops at the Deniliquin Bowling Club. It may technically be ‘offseason’ for pennant bowls, but there’s still plenty on offer at the popular local club during the cooler months. The club has something for everyone, including mixed social bowls which is held every Saturday afternoon during the winter. ‘‘Social bowls is great fun and a good way to get together,’’ club committee member Tom Todd said. ‘‘The Wednesday social bowls over summer was well supported so hopefully we can get good numbers in winter too. ‘‘Bowlers of all levels of experience are welcome to come down for a roll. ‘‘We like to put new bowlers in the same team as the experienced players to help them out.’’ The club hosts several annual tournaments mid-year, including the Winter Invitation Classic Pairs in August. Take care of your teeth The ways we can take care of our teeth are ingrained in us from an early age, but tooth damage prevention while playing sport can often be overlooked. Local Dental dentists Kritika and Jimmi Patel say one of the first steps is to get a mouth guard. Kritika said the Australian Dental Association strongly recommends the use of a mouth guard in any sport or activity where collision or contact is likely, including noncontact sports. They should be worn during games and training. ‘‘We can do the mouth guards here at the centre and they come in a range of colours — we can even do them in

firmly in place, allowing you to concentrate on playing the sport you love. ‘‘You should consider it a mandatory part of your sporting equipment, no matter your age or experience. ‘‘Only dental professionals can design and manufacture a customfitted mouth guard that provides adequate protection. ‘‘With a two to three day turnaround, it’s quick and pain free.’’ To book an appointment, contact Local Dental on 5881 3468 or drop into the clinic at 404 Charlotte St, Deniliquin.
