Morris return to boost Rams With the return of 2013 O’Dwyer Medal winner Ash Morris and a growing list of talented youngsters, Deniliquin Rams playing-coach Todd Gallagher has high hopes for the 2018 Murray Football League season. Morris had a season away from football last year in order to overcome a back complaint, but will be a massive inclusion for the Rams. In 2016, the midfielder impressed in eight games for Richmond’s VFL side as a running back flanker and was also a member of the Tigers squad last year despite not getting on the paddock. Gallagher, in his first year as coach, said the key signing was the next step in developing his young side. “Ash is a Murray League O’Dwyer medallist and has played VFL footy, so he’s the classy midfielder we were looking for,” he said. ‘‘It’s also great for our juniors to have someone with VFL experience at the club and he’s keen to help develop our younger guys.” After an improved season in 2017, Gallagher is keen to see his side continue to grow this year. The Rams were the surprise packet of the competition last year, finishing eighth on the ladder with seven wins

■ Ash Morris with his O’Dwyer Medal in 2013. after many tipped them to be wooden spooners before the season started. The young Deni side showed they had plenty of fight in them, knocking off top six side Mulwala by two goals, as well as coming within eight points of premier Nathalia. The one underlying issue for the Rams, however, is their depth, losing experienced defenders Rob Resuggan and Anthony Bull as well as onballer Charles Trotman in the off-season. ‘‘It’s no secret we struggled for numbers in the reserves last year, and

this year looks like it might be a little bit tough in that respect again,” Gallagher said. ‘‘But despite that we won seven games in the seniors (last year), so that’s a big positive, and I’m really positive about this year. ‘‘You always want to improve on the year before and we were only a couple of wins away from finals last year. ‘‘Young guys like Matt MacDonald, Liam Pitts, Ben Irwin and Mick Barnett have had solid pre-seasons and should go up another level this year having about 30 senior games under their belts now. We also have Sam Willoughby, Sid Pearn and Lachy Trotman coming out of the thirds and they’ve all impressed in the practice matches, so it’s pretty exciting. ‘‘We’re realistic about things and don’t expect to be a top side this year, but if we can keep getting games into the younger blokes and improve on our 2017 season, we should be thereabouts in the near future.’’ Ins: Ash Morris (Richmond VFL), Matt Cameron (Berrigan), Jayden Caniglia (Deni Rovers). Outs: Anthony Bull (Wycheproof Narraport), Rob Resuggan (Blighty), Charles Trotman (Mount Pleasant), Dylan East (Deni Rovers).

Rams a finals contender The Deni Rams A grade netball side is expected to be a premiership threat once again this year. The side will be led by club legend Jodie Sefton for the third year in a row and they’re hoping to improve on their Murray League preliminary final loss last year. It was the second year in a row the Rams had made the prelim. ‘‘Obviously we were all pretty disappointed with how things finished over the past two seasons,’’ non-playing coach Sefton said. ‘‘We certainly had the capability to go all the way but just couldn’t get the job done to make it to the grand final. ‘‘While a grand final appearance is one of our goals, the main goal is ensuring our club is an enjoyable place to play netball.’’ Last year the Rams finished fifth on the ladder and claimed two elimination final wins to make it to within a game of the grand final. Capping off a tremendous 2017 was versatile defender Amelia Seignior, who was rewarded for her outstanding season by winning the league’s best and fairest. Seignior is set to star once again and this year will also take on the role of B grade coach. Star mid-courters Hayley Hall and Eleisha Bartlett return to the A/B grade

The Rams will also welcome Frieda O’Sullivan to the side, adding to a strong attacking end. Unfortunately the Rams lose 2017 club runner-up best and fairest and key

defender Emily Mildren, mid-courters Nat Thorpe and Laura Biggs and defender Taylor McNamara this year. While Sefton conceded this will be a big blow to the side, she also believes there is plenty of upside for the Rams. ‘‘It’s not ideal to be losing those four girls but we do also have those big inclusions,’’ she said. ‘‘And we have young netballers like Ella Park, Kate McCalman, Georgia Richards and Lucy Simpson who are all keen to play at senior level. ‘‘I’m also looking forward to working with Leah Blake after she had such a promising start to last year before her injury. ‘‘All the girls were really impressive in our pre-season game against Tocumwal. We jelled well as a team and it was like we had already been playing half a season together. ‘‘Things are looking pretty promising this year and we’re all excited for what the season will bring.’’ Deni Rams A/B squad: Bec White, Leah Blake, Hayley Hall, Amelia Seignior, Eleisha Bartlett, Eliza Eastman, Ella Park, Kate McCalman, Frieda O’Sullivan, Corinne Mitsch, Maddy Callanan, Lucy Simpson, Georgia Richards, Elle Parsons and Amber Farley.

Junior focus for Rovers Deni Rovers’ netball is in good hands with A and B grade coach Grant Matthews and netball coordinator Brian Purtill taking charge. Matthews’ netball involvement has spanned more than two decades, including coaching stints at Mathoura (Picola League), Echuca (Goulburn Valley), Katandra (Picola south-west) and Echuca United (Murray) before landing at the Roos last year as an assistant coach, winning multiple premierships along the way. Purtill, an experienced netball coordinator for the Roos, returns to the club after a four year hiatus from the top job. ‘‘Over the whole club, from juniors to seniors, we’ll be very competitive,’’ Purtill said. ‘‘It’s looking to be a very promising year with new players and plenty of netballers training. ‘‘Grant and myself are both big on junior development so that will be a major focus this year. ‘‘Juniors are the lifeblood

■ Versatile tall Chrissy Hurst will be one of the Rovers’ key players for the 2018 season. of any club and their development all starts from the top. ‘‘All of our coaches that we have for 2018 all have the ability to communicate well with the junior netballers and

will all be a massive help in ensuring the future of our club.’’ The Rovers A grade once again enter the season as runners-up, having lost to

Tocumwal in the grand final for the third year in a row last year. The Roos will be boosted this year with Murray Netball League best and fairest runner-up Gracie Berryman coming across from Echuca United. Other key inclusions to the line-up will be Iesha McGee (Rumbalara) and Rovers duo Brittany Kirby and Carissa Thommers, both returning after having a baby. The Roos also boast reigning PDNL best and fairest Lucy Howard and star shooter Chrissy Hurst, which makes for a formidable A grade line-up. The only loss is key defender Nat Henthorn who is having a year off. Coaches for the 2018 season are as follows: A and B grade - Grant Matthews, C and C reserve Shannon Bulmer, Under 17s Tenille Blake, U15s - Mirelda Wales, U13s - Alex Glowrey, U11s - Mathilda Jacobs.

Deniliquin Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre offers skilled and professional physiotherapy assessment of musculoskeletal injuries. Practice principal Lynda Barclay started Deniliquin Physiotherapy 26 years ago and she has recently added physiotherapist Caleb Pannell and experienced remedial massage therapist Nerisa Wills to the team to meet the demand the practice is experiencing. Deniliquin Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Centre is a primary contact practice, meaning clients can refer themselves without requiring a doctor’s referral. Lynda, Caleb and Nerisa treat a wide range of sports and work-related injuries. During winter common injuries seen from netball, football and soccer include ankle sprains, muscle strains and haematomas, and knee injuries such as patellafemoral pain syndrome and anterior cruciate and medial ligament tears. ‘‘Early assessment after injury is vital to ensuring that timely treatment is implemented, enabling the player

to return to the field as soon as possible,’’ Lynda said. ‘‘Often it is quicker for the patient to begin with a physiotherapy appointment rather than wait for an appointment with their GP. ‘‘We can assess them clinically, request x-rays if warranted and then refer on to the GP if required.’’ Remedial massage is a useful form of treatment which can be particularly helpful with athletes with heavy training workloads and those suffering from postural aches and general tightness. Nerisa can also provide relaxation massages. The centre operates from purpose built rooms at Deniliquin Allied Health, 382 George St, Deniliquin on weekdays. Call 0417 204 668 to make both physiotherapy and massage appointments. Treatment costs are claimable through private health funds (with HICAPS), Medicare (with appropriate referral), Workcover, and Department of Veterans Affairs.

Roos aim for finals footy Deni Rovers coach Josh Bode has one goal in mind for his side this year — to win a finals game. Bode has taken a strong approach to recruiting this off-season in order to see the club rise back up the ladder in 2018. Headlining the Roos recruits this year is veteran power forward Aaron Purcell, experienced utility Des Morgan and quality midfielders Ricki Waters and brothers Nathan and Dylan Kerr. “I’ve heard good things about Ricki Waters so I’m looking to a big season from him,” Bode said. “Aaron Purcell looks as fit as I’ve ever seen him. He and Des (Morgan) will add plenty of experience to the side. “Andrew May isn’t getting any slower as he gets older, and if (key forward) Brody Lumber can stay injury free, he will make a big impact. “We’ve had a few local juniors like Peter Lewis and Alex and Joe Hay return, which is also a big positive for the club. “As a club we have won

■ Rovers recruits Dylan Kerr, Ricki Waters and Nathan Kerr. just one final in the past 25 years, so if we can knock that goal off the list I’ll be satisfied with our season.” The Rovers’ preparation for the season has been one of its biggest ever, and they will have played three practice matches leading into round one. The Roos played Finley on March 16 and Wandella on March 24, and they’ll play Hay on Easter Saturday.

DENILIQUIN ROVERS FOOTBALL & NETBALL CLUB

‘‘We want to get at least two games into our senior players, so it was easier to organise three games with some players unavailable some weeks,’’ Bode said. ‘‘We started training pretty early, but we didn’t start as early as some other clubs before the Christmas breakup. ‘‘I don’t think we need to be at the peak of our fitness at round one.

‘‘If there was one thing I learned in my time (coaching) at Jerilderie, it was that starting a little bit later can see the team peak at the right end of the season. But you also don’t want to be unprepared come round one.’’ The Roos are set for a good year, retaining the majority of their 2017 senior list. With the added talent and premiership experience of some of the recruits, the Rovers should return to finals footy and should have the ability to reach their major goal. Ins: Peter Lewis (Springbank), James Gilligan, Aaron Purcell (Jerilderie), Des Morgan (Picola Utd), Alex Hay (Seymour), Nathan Kerr (Rumbalara), Ricki Waters (Macorna), Dylan Kerr (Shepparton Swans), Dylan East (Deni Rams), Alexander Landale, Joe Hay. Outs: Tanner Robertson (Blighty), Mark Lamborn (Birdwood).

Maxwell signs on as coach Blighty netball president Vicki Ackers is hoping for big things this year. With the announcement that star defender Molly Cochrane will be joined by Rhiannan Maxwell in the coaching ranks for the 2018 season, Ackers believes the Redeyes can go deep into finals again. Blighty A grade won their way to a preliminary final appearance last year, showing good signs of improvement despite the loss. ‘‘We finished well last year,’’ Ackers said. ‘‘With Rhiannan joining Molly, the girls are in great hands.’’ Maxwell offers a wealth of knowledge from her time playing with Wandin in the Yarra Ranges competition where she won a premiership in 2016 before joining the Redeyes last year. The star shooter is expected to be the player to watch this year, having finished equal runner-up along with

■ Blighty A grade best and fairest Nat Tremble in action during last year’s preliminary final. teammate Demi Blake in last year’s league best and fairest despite missing half the season. The Redeyes will also welcome back utility player Chelsea McNamara after having a baby last year and

shooter Georgia Bradford, returning to Blighty after being away for school. Blighty have also retained the services of reigning club best and fairest Nat Tremble, as well as most of their top tier talent.

Unfortunately for the Redeyes they will lose young midcourter Anna Druitt and shooter Emily White. But with Maxwell, Blake, McNamara and Tremble still around, the Redeyes should find themselves near the top of the ladder once again. ‘‘We’re fielding teams in all grades this year so that’s a massive plus,’’ Ackers said. ‘‘Hopefully we will be up near the top end of the ladder again this season and hopefully we can go one step further and make the grand final.’’ Coaches for the Redeyes this year are as follows: A grade - Molly Cochrane and Rhiannan Maxwell, B Grade - Charlea Blake and Chelsea McNamara, C grade - Kristeen Culton, C reserve Temeka Macdonald, Under 17s - Andy Lostroh and Judy Plattfuss, U15s - Alana Coates, U13s - Nikita Doyle, U11s - Tiah Macdonald and Steph Barry.

With business booming podiatrist Justin Williams has joined the team, moving to Deniliquin this year. ‘‘I’ve hired Justin to help out with the increase in new patients,’’ Krystle said. ‘‘He studied podiatry at La Trobe University in Bendigo after moving away from his home town in Ballarat. He’s already settled in well in the local community, playing footy for the Deni Rovers as well as getting involved in various community events. We’re now able to fit patients in for appointments within a week rather than them having to wait for long periods of time.’’ Foot Mechanix offers all forms of podiatry including nail and foot care services, basic and custom made orthotics, footwear advice, walking assessments, treatment of foot or ankle injuries

Blighty a flag favourite Blighty has its eyes on a grand final berth in the Picola & District Football League this year. The Redeyes finished agonisingly short of the decider in 2017, giving up a 28-point lead in the third term to be downed by Strathmerton by a goal in the preliminary final. After signing on as the club’s coach this season, reigning best and fairest winner Jack Tyndall has built what he believes can be a side that can claim the Redeyes’ first piece of silverware since 2000. Headlining the Redeyes recruits are Deni Rovers key position player Tanner Robertson, Tocumwal tall Dane Maxwell and experienced Deni Rams defender Rob Resuggan. ‘‘We recruited blokes who wanted to head out to Blighty because they love the culture at the club,” he said. ‘‘Robertson caught my eye

■ Blighty coach Jack Tyndall expects his side to be near the top again this year. when we played against the Rovers last year, while I’ve known Rob (Resuggan) and Dane (Maxwell) for a while. ‘‘With the talent we already have we should be in a strong position to at least go one better and make the grand final. ‘‘Our list is stronger than

ever at the moment. We had a look at a potential round one side and counted at least 14 blokes who would possibly miss out that could easily line up for the seniors. ‘‘There’s a fair few blokes at the club using that preliminary final loss as motivation for this year, so the hunger to win is definitely there.’’ Blighty will enter the season with a new leadership group with reigning league best and fairest Jed Brain signing on as an assistant coach and onballer Lenny Clarke joining Kyel Bain as a co-captain. The Redeyes will also have three vice-captains with Lachie MacDonald, Tom Draffin and Sam Singleton rounding out the leadership group. ‘‘Lenny is a great leader and leads by example on the field,’’ Tyndall said. ‘‘He’s also quite vocal on the field, giving plenty of his teammates advice and guid-

ance, so we felt he would fit well for the role. ‘‘I expect a massive year from Lenny. He had a strong showing in the middle last year on a part-time basis, but this year he will play predominantly in the midfield. “Jed (Brain) is the reigning league medallist so we’d expect he’ll have another strong year and I’m excited to see what Ryan Chadderton can produce after a full preseason under his belt.’’ Ins: Tanner Robertson (Deni Rovers), Rob Resuggan (Deni Rams), Louis Clarke (Wakool), Justin Crowley (Finley), Dane Maxwell, Dylan Maxwell (Tocumwal), Andrew Barry (Elmore), Thomas Billings (South Broken Hill), Daniel Jordan (year away). Outs: Brayden Hall (year away), Kyle Connor-Kent (Anakie), Corey Percy (Barooga), Charlie Simpson (Darwin).

We welcome all new and existing players to the club for the 2018 season.

This year is shaping as an exciting one, on and off the field, with junior development being our main focus.

Drovers become the hunted For the first time in years, Deniliquin Drovers will enter a rugby union season as the team to beat. The Drovers took home the McMullen Cup premiership last year after beating Southern Inland Rugby Union powerhouse Wagga Waratahs 20-17 in the grand final. But if the locals are to claim their first ever back-to-back titles, they’re going to have to do it with a fairly newlook side. Club president Paul ‘Ripper’ Marshall said despite losing a number of key players from last year’s team, he’s confident the Drovers will still be force. ‘‘It’s fairly unfamiliar territory for us,’’ Marshall said. ‘‘In recent years we’ve enjoyed the underdog status, but after last year’s result, it’s fair to say we’re now the hunted.

■ Deniliquin Drovers 2017 McMullen Cup winning side. ‘‘But I’m confident with the recruits we’ve picked up and with Joe Gogarty returning as coach, we’re going to have another genuine crack this season.’’ Most notable of the exclusions this year is star centre Tyler Amor-Beale who has moved to Melbourne with work commitments, while reigning best and fairest Hugh Sutton is currently playing overseas. ‘‘We’re hoping to get

Hugh back later in the year,’’ Marshall said. ‘‘We’ve also had a few guys retire, including Nathan Transton, Les Dicker and Lynden Goulding. That’s a lot of experience that we’ve lost. ‘‘But some of the players that have come in help to make up for that. ‘‘You can already see how good an influence some of these guys are having just by

their attitudes at training.’’ Key recruits include Dee Feagai (Leeton), Con Thalasinos (Robinvale), as well as Bob Jacobsen and Zack Thompson (both Aussie rules). ‘‘Zack is the son of club legend and former best and fairest Mark Thompson,’’ Marshall said. ‘‘Mark has actually been training with the side as well which has been great.

‘‘Who knows, he might even make a comeback.’’ The Drovers start their premiership defence with a home clash against rival Hay at Rotary Park in Deniliquin on Saturday April 7. The club trains from 6.30pm Tuesdays and Thursdays at Rotary Park. New players are always welcome. Drovers draw: April 7, Deni v Hay; April 14, Tumut v Deni (at Leeton); April 21, Wagga Ag v Deni (at Albury); April 28, Griffith v Deni; May 5 bye; May 12, Deni v Wagga Waratahs; May 19, Deni v CSU; May 26, Hay v Deni; June 2 bye; June 9, general bye (Queen’s Birthday weekend); June 16, Deni v Wagga Ag; June 23, Griffith v Deni; June 30, Deni v Hay; July 7, bye; July 14, Hay v Deni; July 21, CSU v Deni (at Albury).

LOOKING FOR A CHANGE? TRY RUGBY! The Deniliquin Rugby Union Football Club were McMullen Cup premiers in 2017 – and they’re looking for new players to help them go back-to-back! The Drovers field both men’s and women’s sides in the Southern Inland Rugby Union competition. Players travel from right across southern NSW and northern Victoria, including players travelling from Echuca, Barham and Swan Hill. Training is held Tuesday and Thursday nights at Rotary Park in Deniliquin (next to Sports Stadium). The first game is April 7. Three fight nights in 2018 Golden Rivers Deniliquin RSL Boxing Club will hold three ‘fight night’ events in 2018, kicking off the year on Saturday, April 28. Some boxers are expected to be travelling to Deniliquin from Shepparton and Wagga to participate, with the ring to be set up in the RSL Club’s Dunlop Room. The night will feature 12 bouts of boxing, from 7pm to about 11pm. Golden Rivers head trainer Roy Lynn said the card will be filled with local boxers. ‘‘All are very fit and well prepared for the event,’’ he said. ‘‘It will be great entertainment and we’d love a big crowd of locals supporting our boxers.’’ Signed up to compete are Brad Maw, Blake and Luke Charlton, brothers Zac and Josh Rochford, Riley Foord, Lachlan Dunn, Daniel Chenhall, Aaron Woods and the returning Codie Haywood. Training the local competitors alongside Lynn are Paul Johnstone and Travis Roch-

bition bouts in a tremendous effort. ‘‘Brad Maw will also be keen to extend his undefeated run to six wins. ‘‘I’m also really excited to see Codie Haywood return to

the ring after being away for over a year. ‘‘The night will see Aaron Woods have his first taste of in-the-ring action in an exhibition bout as well. I’m sure he’ll learn a lot from stepping in the ring and it will most definitely build his confidence.’’ The two other amateur fight events are planned for August and November, with dates to be set closer to the events. The Golden Rivers Boxing Club was formed by Lynn in 1998, first at Wakool and then relocating to Deniliquin. Local training is held in the Golden River Boxing Club’s rooms located in Duncan St. Boxers meet from 6.30pm to 7.30pm each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Sporting hub has plenty of options Deniliquin Sports & Entertainment Stadium will continue to be a sporting hub this winter. Located on the corner of Ochtertyre St and Wirraway Drive, the stadium is well known for being the home of a massive range of sports. Ladies indoor netball is held each Tuesday and there is also a mixed netball competition for people aged 35 and over. Mixed netball is played on Monday nights, ladies basketball takes place on Tuesday nights and men’s basketball is held on Wednesday nights. Junior sports are also held during the week, with junior basketball and Deni Hoops (introduction to basketball) on offer. ‘‘Deni Hoops is for kids in Kinder to Year 2, teaching them the basics of basketball,’’ stadium manager John Arthur said. ‘‘Our junior basketball competitions for students in Year 3 up to high school age are also extremely popular.’’ The stadium also features a coded scoreboard system on

birthdays to an award presentation ceremony — the stadium doubles as a first class ‘venue for hire’. ‘‘We can accommodate everything from exhibitions to parties. We’re a community venue and anyone can hire the stadium,’’ Arthur said. For more information, contact John Arthur at the stadium on (03) 5881 4100.

Swim centre open in winter Even though winter and swimming don’t usually mix, Deniliquin Swim Centre can cater for you during the colder months. The hydrotherapy indoor heated pool is open seven days a week with swimming lessons on offer. Pool manager Katrina Ives encourages swimmers of all levels to use the facility. ‘‘We run swimming lessons for all ages,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s a great way to prepare for summer so people can have the skills to enjoy the water in the hot weather. ‘‘Swimming is a skill you have for life so we want to ensure that we can help with water safety as much as possible. ‘‘We have plenty of members from the swimming club who practice for the upcoming swim season, too. ‘‘We already have more than 100 children enrolled for lessons in term one, and there are babies’ swim classes and adult classes with group or private lessons both available. ‘‘We only use Austswim

the water quality and the safety for patrons.’’ The swim centre is also host to Aqua Aerobics on Monday and Thursday nights, as well as Tuesday mornings. ‘‘We want people to know that just because summer is over it doesn’t mean you can’t come to the pool,’’ Katrina said.

During the summer season — from November 1 until March 31 — swimmers can enjoy the 50 metre pool, 20 metre learner’s pool, babies’ pool and the large 15 metre Aqua challenge inflatable obstacle course. The inflatable comes in four sections and at the end is a large slide. The swim centre is a great place to host birthday parties when the weather is warm, with the only cost being the regular admission fee. The pool team can cater for your party, but it must be planned in advance to ensure a suitable number of lifeguards are available for the day. Lap swimming is also held throughout summer every day from 6am-8.30am and in the afternoon, with lane booking also an option. DNA to build on 2017 success Deniliquin Netball Association will be looking to build on a successful 2017. After strong numbers for the competition last year, the decision was made to continue the Wednesday competition over winter. Last year DNA had 11 open and 12 junior teams, with 55 adults, 107 juniors and 87 NetSetGO participants — more than double the number to the previous year. This led to DNA claiming the Outstanding Small Association/League of the Year at the Netball Victoria Community Awards. The local association was also nominated for the NetSetGo Centre of the Year. ‘‘We were really privileged just to be nominated for two awards, but to win one was amazing,’’ DNA president Janet Manzin said. ‘‘We listened to the community and the move to Wednesday nights was a nobrainer. While it was tough to break tradition it more than doubled our members, which shows that it was needed. ‘‘We wouldn’t have won that award without our spon-

It gives kids of all abilities a positive introduction to netball and teaches them the basic skills of the sport. Suncorp NetSetGO is divided into three tiers; Net, Set and GO, meaning that your child will learn at a pace that’s right for their age and ability. Each week your child will take part in skill based activities, minor games, and modified matches that will help them develop fundamental movement skills, as well as important social skills like team work. Each session will be led by a coach, using modified equipment.

ment (NetSetGO) through to open grades. Players of all ages and skill levels are welcome to register, including boys aged 13 years and under. The move to mid-week also allows local football-netball clubs to participate, provid-

ing their teams with valuable practice. The new competition started on March 21, with games being played from 5.30pm. Games will be 12-minute quarters with the competition running for 11 weeks and three weeks of finals. The 10-week NetSetGO program will kick-off on April 4, starting at 4pm with other grades of netball following. DNA will again be coordinating representative teams, with teams training weekly and travelling to approximately six tournaments. This is a great opportunity for players to develop their netball, leadership and team work. This year, three talented DNA juniors were selected for academies with Georgina Mildren and Isabella McIlwain chosen for the Bendigo Academy of Sport Netball Program and Ella Harvey selected for the Northern Victoria Zone Academy. These girls were first identified at the association championships, showing that participation in the representative side pays off.

The action never stops at the Deniliquin Bowling Club. It may technically be ‘offseason’ for pennant bowls, but there’s still plenty on offer at the popular local club during the cooler months. This popular event attracts class bowlers from all over Australia, with invitations sent out to bowlers who have achieved high credentials on the greens during their careers. The Classic Pairs will take place on August 4 and 5, with the singles knockout on August 3. ‘‘The Classic Pairs is recognised as one of the biggest tournaments throughout Australia,’’ club committee member Tom Todd said. ‘‘We’re expecting close to 200 bowlers again this year so it should be a great weekend.’’ Deniliquin Bowling Club’s Open Premier Fours will be held August 25-26. Mouthguards Soccer season a safety must The ways we can take care of our teeth are ingrained in us from an early age, but tooth damage prevention while playing sport can often be overlooked. Local Dental dentists Kritika and Jimmi Patel say one of the first steps is to get a mouthguard. Kritika said the Australian Dental Association strongly recommends the use of a mouthguard in any sport or activity where collision or contact is likely, including non-contact sports, and during both games and training. ‘‘We can do the mouthguards here at the centre and they come in a range of colours — we can even do them in your football team’s colours,’’ Kritika said.

‘‘We can get them done within one to two days if needed. ‘‘You can talk normally, they don’t restrict your breathing and stay firmly in place, allowing you to concentrate on playing the sport you love. ‘‘You should consider it a mandatory part of your sporting equipment, no matter your age or experience. ‘‘Only dental professionals can design and manufacture a custom-fitted mouthguard that provides adequate protection. ‘‘With a two to three day turnaround, it’s quick and pain free.’’ To book in contact Local Dental on 5881 3468 or drop into the clinic at 404 Charlotte St.

The Deniliquin District Soccer 2018 season is just around the corner. The club is again hoping for more than 200 registrations from boys and girls aged four and onwards. Players will be divided into grades with games starting at 9.30am or 10.30am depending on the grade. The 13-week season starts May 5 at Rotary Park, with a break on July 14 and 21 due to school holidays. Finals will be held on August 25. There will be four Open Age teams with the first game being played at 11.30am and second game at 12.30pm. ‘‘This is a great opportunity for our over 15 years players to play each week without the need to travel. The past two seasons have been a great social atmosphere and a lot of fun,’’ Club president Andy Paton said. A new initiative this season is a five-week Friday night social competition under lights for High School age players. There will also be a coaching clinic during school holidays from July 9-11, with

juniors in the morning and seniors in the afternoon, while talent coaches Josh Perizzolo and Jacob Hird will be providing skills training sessions each Thursday from 5pm to 6pm. ‘‘We’d also love to see the ongoing support from parents again,’’ Paton said. ‘‘We need parents to volunteer to be team managers, umpires, set up grounds, mark lines and work in the canteen. Soccer registration forms will have a section for you to indicate your preference on how you can help.’’ Registration days are at Intersport Bennett’s on April 14 and April 21 from 9.30am to noon. More information will be available on Facebook in the coming weeks. Those who pay at the registration days receive a pair of black socks and those registering in Kangas and Joeys will receive starter kits.
