You’ll find a host of information about the town, its activities and attractions, as well as other towns within day-trip distance. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in one of the many brochures or the Deniliquin Visitors Guide, the friendly volunteers can point you in the right direction. The centre houses a local history museum and exhibition space, which is utilised all year round by local, regional and national artists to showcase their works.

The Peppin Heritage Centre is ideally situated on the banks of the Edward River, and is the central point to access the popular Beach to Beach river walk. The centre is situated at the corner of George and Napier Sts and is open daily between 9am and 4pm and has access to The Crossing Cafe. Admission to the exhibition and museum space is $3. Travel bloggers are stumbling upon the beauty of Deniliquin and district at a growing rate, and they’re sharing their amazing experiences with readers all over the world. The most recent travel bloggers to visit the region are James and Paige, who are travelling Australia and the world with their seven month-old son Oliver. They have a blog called ‘Live life and roam: Family travel is possible’. Following is an excerpt of what they loved about Deniliquin.

There’s more than just a river! There’s more to Deni than a world-famous Ute Muster, much more! To be perfectly honest, we had no idea what to expect of Deniliquin and we were definitely taken by surprise. Situated in the heart of town Corner of George and Napier St

THREE GREAT SHOPS, ONE CONVENIENT STOP! PLENTY OF PARKING.

Deni is like an Aussie outback oasis, with the gorgeous Edward River flowing through town. Also, its only 3.5 hours’ drive from Melbourne, so what are you waiting for, start planning a weekend away! Although the town is known for all its river-based activities, there’s loads more of Deni to explore! Oh, and if you’re still wondering what a ‘Ute Muster’ is, it’s a yearly music event bringing people and their utility vehicles from all over the country. In fact, it holds the Guinness world record for the most utes in one place at one time, a mighty feat! For an epic evening sunset drive out past Wanganella and you will notice the landscape dramatically change. This area, known as the ‘Hay Plains’, is some of the flattest plains on Earth and you can see the horizon in all directions. It’s a totally bizarre feeling and when you’re driving along, it seems like you may just fall off the edge of the Earth! The barren landscape is populated by saltbush and the odd tree dotted around, giving off a really deserted vibe. You’ll feel like, and you probably are, the only people out there! Watching the sunset go down here was absolutely incredible and the colours were out of this world! Afterwards, once dark, the sky lit up with the most stars we have ever set eyes upon. Definitely a must see, as there is no light pollution whatsoever affecting visibility.

One of Australia’s Best Areas for

BIRDWATCHING

Deniliquin and district is recognised as one of Australia’s best birding areas. More than a third of Australia’s bird species have been spotted in and around Deniliquin. The Plains Wanderer is an endangered species with habitat in and around Deniliquin. Other popular locations for bird watching are in the Murray Valley Regional Park (enter via Memorial Drive), Blake Botanical Reserve, or along the Edward River. Further south is the Murray Wetlands, which cover 5400 hectares. The Moira Lake wetland system is off the Cobb Highway near Mathoura. The Reed Beds Bird Hide, on Picnic Point Road just out of Mathoura, is a bird watcher’s paradise. You’ll never tire of the variety of birds flying in and out of the wetland. Take your camera for a stunning photo of an eastern

great egret or a musk duck thrashing in the water to attract a mate. Walking along the boardwalk, look for yellow rosellas and superb wrens or watch at the edge of the water for a purple swamphen. Other popular bird watching locations throughout the region are the Deniliquin North Wetlands in Victoria Street, McFaull Park, Tullakool evaporation ponds, Wanganella swamps, Black Swamp and Zara Sandhill. The Visitor Information Centre staff in George St, Deniliquin will be only too happy to provide keen bird watchers with directions. Or to ensure you experience it all, a local bird guide can be arranged at the centre. Not too far away, in the Southern Riverina along the Murray River system,

What’s On Winter 2019 7

there’s even more bird watching to enjoy. Thompsons Beach is Australia’s largest inland beach and is located in Cobram, just over the river from Tocumwal. This is a beautiful day area, located in an idyllic setting, boasts picnic and barbecue facilities, and also shared walking and cycling tracks that link to Quinn Island. It’s an ideal place to relax and enjoy the local birdlife. Quinn Island is located at River Road, Cobram and is a water bird haven for Kingfishers, Egrets and other water birds within the lagoons and billabongs of this nature sanctuary. Walk through River Red Gum forests and marvel at the native birds and animals, close to the centre of town. There is a 1.6km walking track and a viewing bird hide.

Deniliquin’s Spring Rally Tractors, motorcycles, hot rods and custom and classic cars and stationary engines will be featured at Memorial Park this September for the 15th annual Deniliquin Collectors Club Spring Rally. Added to the event this year will be a section for vintage caravans, with 30 booked to attend the September 21 and 22 event by the end of May. To complement the new feature, rockabilly fans are encouraged to embrace the spirit at Deniliquin and come in costume. The Deniliquin Collector’s Club Spring Rally will be held at Deniliquin’s Memorial Park showgrounds. Tractors, stationary engines and collectables of all sizes and shapes will feature over both days, and a car show’n’shine will be the added feature on the Sunday. The feature tractor at this year’s event with be the David Brown tractor, in honour of the formation of the David Brown Club of Australia at the Deniliquin event a decade ago. The David Browns and other tractors featured will form a procession on the Saturday when entrants head off on the traditional tractor trek, which passes through Deniliquin before a lunch stop at one of the nearby villages.

Deniliquin Collectors Club member Steve Beckwith said the display will take you back in time. ‘‘We usually get about 120 cars and tractors show up, and we hope to get just as many this time around. ‘‘It’s a great event to bring the whole family along for a fun day out. You could see something you’ve never seen before and a little bit of history.’’ Entry to the Spring Rally is $5 per day. Catering on site will be provided by the Deniliquin Pastoral and Agricultural Society.

There will be plenty more to see at Memorial Park with the pavilion packed with collectables which in the past has included eskies, model cars, dragon figurines, and guitars and records. Collector enthusiasts can look forward to a swap site where you buy and sell items, along with stationary displays. And there will be children’s entertainment to enjoy as well. Take a stroll along the

BEACH TO BEACH WALK Deniliquin’s Beach to Beach walk is the best way to still enjoy the picturesque Edward River and the region’s other natural assets when it’s a bit too cold for a dip. Start at McLean Beach and follow the path along the banks of the river passing stately red gums and sandy beaches. Visit Deniliquin & District Historical Society along the way, then continue on past the hospital, police station and medical centre to the ‘Ute on a Pole’. Re-emerge from underneath the National Bridge and then take a short diversion at the back of the Peppin Heritage Centre to see the Mosaic Ute and the Long Paddock sculpture called ‘Shod’. As you pass the sculptures you will come to a ramp which takes you to the Island Sanctuary. Wander through this tranquil setting and keep an eye out for the birds, kangaroos and other wildlife. Why not organise a tour with Yarkuwa Indigenous Knowledge Centre staff who will show you the native flora and fauna, as well as trees of historical importance to the local Wamba Wamba and Perrapa Perrapa people? The walking path continues at the back gate of the sanctuary where you will pass the town’s first water supply tower and the Memorial Park sporting grounds. Enter the Murray Valley Regional Park and follow the tracks around the river, enjoy the sandy beaches and wonder at this beautiful natural setting.

While you’re enjoying the walk, make sure to keep an eye out for the ‘kindness rocks’, which are usually scattered all the way along this walking trail. The project was started by Deniliquin artist Lindy Clark to share something she loved with her son Ethan and bring a smile to someone’s day. Anyone who finds a kindness rock is invited to take a photo and share it to social media, and then leave the rock in the same or a new place along the walk for the next person to find.

New Mountain Bike Trails In Deniliquin’s north east is the Deniliquin Regional Park which incorporates Willoughby’s Beach and is part of the National Parks and Wildlife Service network. Hugging the banks of the Edward River, and at the eastern end of the Beach to Beach Walk which starts at McLean Beach, the Murray Valley Regional Park is dog friendly bush camping at its best. The flat terrain and dedicated tracks and trails make the Deniliquin district an ideal place for a leisurely stroll, or pedal power.

Structured around the existing kangaroo tracks throughout the Murray Valley Regional Park, the trail winds through the forest’s iconic red gums and showcases the beauty of the area. It’s a great way to experience adventure tourism right here in Deniliquin and takes about two hours to compete.

There’s more than 30km of bike trails in the Murray Valley National Park, providing cycling enthusiasts with a great way to experience the diversity of nature and magnificent landscapes. This includes the newly opened 12km Mountain Bike Track.

If you didn’t bring your own bike, drop in to the Peppin Heritage Centre and Visitor Information Centre in George St, Deniliquin to inquire about bike hire before heading to the forest. The Visitor Information Centre also has copies of trails maps. What’s On Winter 2019 11

Discover Deniliquin’s

LOCAL HISTORY

If you’re looking for something to do to appeal to your love of history, the Deniliquin Historical Society Museum should be on your ‘to-do’ list. Formerly the Police Inspector’s residence, the Macauley St building is now the headquarters of the society. And it houses a fantastic history of the local area. The dedicated Deniliquin Historical Society group has a range of displays on show at their museum that have captured the essence of Deniliquin’s past. Built in 1880 it was the original home of Inspector J Dowling-Brown, who later became superintendent for the South West District of NSW. Over the years this magnificent building fell into a state of disrepair and has been restored by the Deniliquin Historical Society since they took over the building in 1986. The society has preserved the heritage of Deniliquin and district and maintains an ever growing collection of local historical records, photographs and memorabilia. If you are looking for that long lost relative the Historical Society can help with burial records for Deniliquin General Cemetery and other district cemeteries.

Picturesque Golf Course Deniliquin is one of the most picturesque of the famous golf courses that stretch along the mighty Murray River and its tributaries.

Other records kept by the Historical Society include items from the Pastoral Times dating from 1859-1979 and nearly 3000 photographs of local people, places and events.

We invite you to enjoy the beauty of this golf course, alongside the kangaroos, kookaburras, Superb Parrots, echidna, goannas, lizards, pelicans and a host of other wildlife that abounds in this paradise of nature. With its 18 manicured fairways and true greens, Deniliquin is a shining example of Australia’s magnificent golf courses.

A Veterans’ Room displays items such as uniforms and other equipment dating from as far back as the Boer War and details local involvement in the wars throughout the years.

It is also in a superb location on the edge of Murray Valley Regional Park, yet just a stone’s throw from the centre of town. By modern standards the course is not long – 5817 metre par 72 for men, and 5118 metre par 72 for ladies.

The Historical Society is open Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10am to noon, and will open for special bookings. Entry is by gold coin donation.

However, off the back tees it is a challenge for all levels of player, as many professionals who have tried to tame the course have discovered. Poor shots find the huge trees that line most of the couch fairways, while the greens are fast but true and always in great condition. Over winter and spring there are numerous special events and tournaments, including Winter and Spring Classics and the popular Veterans’ Week of Golf in October. To see the full calendar visit the club’s website, www.denigolfclub.com. au. A feature of Deniliquin golf course is the ‘same day play’ principle that applies. On most days you can phone the pro shop on (03) 5881 3333 and book your tee off time, or just call in and one of the friendly volunteer staff will cater for your golfing needs. If you are not a golfer, call in and enjoy the club’s facilities. Friday nights are a specialty, when there are meat raffles, Joker’s Wild, great meals and a fun atmosphere where locals will make you welcome.

The Murray River is ever-changing, and in winter ‘the narrows’ near Barmah take on a completely new look with water levels dropping. ‘The narrows’ have been 25,000 years in the making, and Kingfisher Cruises owner/operator Benita Cox enjoys sharing her ‘office’ with those who have never experienced it before. ‘‘It’s a place of peacefulness and remoteness where I get to see others relax from everyday troubles and witness families making memories,’’ she said.

A Village Rich in History The Conargo Interpretive Centre tells the story of the Merino in the district and the history of the Conargo Village. Photos on large wool bales and a restored buggy, complete with a driver and passenger dressed in costume, are very reminiscent of earlier times. The popular and inviting building also houses modern toilet facilities and sits in a landscaped surrounding complete with native vegetation and picnic tables to sit down and enjoy the natural beauty. The Interpretive Centre is located in the centre of Conargo Village at the Recreation Reserve, and also allows free overnight camping for RVs. If you are going to take a drive to Conargo, make sure to take a look at the other historical landmarks situated there. Conargo’s quaint bush church was built in 1914 on land donated by Percy Landale of ‘Quiamong’. The first service was conducted by Rev W Tullock of the Presbyterian Church in Deniliquin and was attended by more than 50 people. It is located about 200m from the centre of the village, on the Carrathool Road and just past the Drop Log Stables, and is the perfect spot for a photo.

‘‘The river is a place where I continue to learn and see new things every day. I get to see history being made. ‘‘It’s a place where I can connect with the environment by experiencing its past, present and future all at the one time because it’s simply just magic.’’ You too can experience the world-acclaimed Barmah wetlands as those who chartered the waters before river regulation did, with Kingfisher Cruises. Hear fascinating commentary from your certified eco guide about the hundreds of species of water birds, animals and native fish that have made the Barmah Wetlands and forest their home, and about the myths and legends of this special area. Benita says Kingfisher Cruises is the only ecological experience in the Barmah/Murray Valley National Parks to gain accreditation under the Nature and Ecotourism Accreditation Program (NEAP). The two-hour public cruises operate Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

The stables were originally part of the Conargo Inn and while the inn has long since gone, the stables are still standing and have been restored. A twice weekly coach service from Deniliquin to Jerilderie was established in 1858 by the founder of Conargo, William McKenzie. By 1891 coaches were doing the 60 mile (96.5km) run from Deniliquin to Jerilderie in a contract time of 14 hours. They would stop for meals at Cadman’s Conargo Inn where these stables were located. During this era the stables were a hive of activity, waiting for the next Cobb & Co team to pull in and change over. On quick stops the driver and workers would race over to the hotel and buy a billy of beer for sixpence. For many years the stables were used as a workshop for Manny Pottinger who was renowned for his skills with fixing windmills. What’s On Winter 2019 17

Get up close to nature at

KYABRAM FAUNA PARK Winter is the ideal time to enjoy the wetland areas of the Kyabram Fauna Park. While the cool weather may slow some of the animals in the park down, the birdlife enjoying the top-up from recent district rainfall is a sight to behold. The wetlands are home to hundreds of waterfowl and visitors can view them via the lookout tower and two bird hides. Kyabram Fauna Park has something for everyone, boasting the second largest range of Australian fauna in Victoria. The park encompasses 55 hectares of open woodland, wetlands and lakes. Get up close to nature with more than 600 native Australian animals including free-ranging kangaroos, emus and wallabies. You can also see koalas, dingoes, wombats, echidna, flying-foxes and quolls. The popular reptile house includes native snakes, crocodile, lizards and turtles and the insect display is home to fascinating mini-beasts. The park’s aviaries are a bird-lovers paradise where visitors can get up close to cockatoos, parrots, brush turkeys, satin bower-birds, owls and endangered bush stone-curlew. You can get extra close to some of the wildlife at daily animal interactions, which include kangaroo or parrot feeding, meeting the koalas and reptile encounters. Visitor facilities include picnic shelters, the Park View Café and a gift shop. A children’s playground and free-to-use barbecues are located at the park’s entrance. The park is open from 10am to 5pm every day, except Christmas Day and Good Friday. For further information, including times for the animal encounters on the day of your visit, go to www.kyabramfaunapark.com.au, ‘like’ the park on Facebook or call (03) 5852 2883.

Finley Pioneer Railway Station To meet the challenges of regional Australia in the late 1800s, Finley was the first sparsely settled town selected for a Pioneer Railway. This was an American style railway to link regional areas to boost trade and travel, but at low cost due to the harsh economic conditions of the time. When the railway arrived in Finley on September 16, 1898 the station had no fences and the tracks were laid without stone ballast which allowed the railway to be built at a third of the cost of the standard railway built from Narrandera to Jerilderie. Incredibly well preserved, Finley Station is one of the few Pioneer stations still standing, and is also host to the Finley Pioneer Railway Museum containing artefacts and

real life railway stories. Take a guided tour with a volunteer and learn about the history of the Finley Pioneer Railway Station or simply have a look around at the onsite railway memorabilia dating back to the 1890s. Come on a journey back in time into the hearts and minds of Finley’s railway community. The Finley Pioneer Railway Station is located in Endeavour St, Finley. To pre-arrange a tour, call (03) 5883 1543.Their three-part harmonies and two-part jokes are worth the long wait between shows.

FINLEY FOUNDRY MUSEUM A new tourism attraction has been established in Finley. Opening this winter, the Finley Foundry Museum is a celebration of the long association JT & EN Close has had with the district community. On display at all times will be old carts, wagons, employment records and other historical items dating back more than 125 years. The museum is dedicated to the original founder and owner JT Close, for the work he did establishing the business and the impact he had on the district. It has been established by his great grandson Graeme Close, who still operates the foundry under the name JT & EN Close Engineering and Steel Fabrication. ‘‘We want to share the history, as we are the only working foundry museum,’’ Mr Close said. ‘‘The exhibit has been developed from family archives, foundry equipment and products, some of which have remained on site since the very early days of the foundry’s operations. ‘‘We also have a belt driven motor and working Hornsby engine from 1911, old carts, wagons, employment records and other historical items. ‘‘This will come from more than 126 years of the business which still flourishes and is now guided by the fifth generation of JT’s descendants.’’ The museum is located at 48-52 Wollamai Street, Finley. It will be open from Monday through to Friday, and at other times by appointment. Entry will be free to the public.

New Gallery Wing Opened Forming part of a new wing of the popular Greens Gunyah Museum, the recently opened Tim Fischer AC Gallery is a welcome addition to Lockhart’s visitor experience. Located in a former motor showroom and garage which adjoins the existing Museum complex, the new wing was purchased by the local historical society to showcase an even greater range of district history. Tim Fischer AC, who was born in Lockhart and has retained a strong connection with the town and community, has generously donated many items from his personal collection to the museum. His period gramophone is just the tip of the display, with the walls containing information and images of his political career, a number of colourful train related paintings and his trademark Akubra hat giving an insight into his political and private life. The Tim Fischer room will be complimented by a static display of the museum’s machinery and vehicles including the fully restored first and only tractor ever owned by the former Deputy Prime Minister. While at Greens Gunyah Museum, there is so much more to experience. A glimpse into the past tells of times of the traditional Wiradjuri owners, the great sheep stations of pastoral kings, fabled bushrangers and thriving settlements during the Federation years. The preservation of the past through stories, landscapes, buildings and

historical collections has resulted in expressive displays including vintage machinery and original building exhibits. Another highlight of the museum is the acclaimed Doris Golder Wool Art Gallery, showcasing phenomenal artwork and one of the Riverina’s most historical and important resources. The incredible portraits and landscapes, which at first glance appear to be high quality sepia drawings, are actually created using layer upon layer of washed, combed and undyed natural coloured wool. Having hung in Parliament and toured NSW and Victoria over a number of years, the collection of 22 pictures is now on permanent display in Lockhart. Open seven days a week, the Lockhart Visitor Information Centre is also located in the museum, with a wide selection of brochures available. Pick up a copy of the Sculpture and Heritage Trail brochure and discover historic sites and the fabulous farm art sculptures, crafted and created from rusted metals. Many are award winning pieces for the popular Spirit of the Land Festival, held on the second weekend in October each year. For more information go to www.visitlockhartshire.com.au.

Ned Kelly History The town of Jerilderie is best known as the site of one of the most infamous and daring raids of bushranger Ned Kelly. Ned, his brother Dan and their friends Steve Hart and Joe Bryce arrived in Jerilderie on Saturday February 8, 1879, where they captured two local policemen and locked them in their own cells. On February 10, 1879 Kelly and his Gang stole £2140 from the Bank of NSW and destroyed a number of mortgage documents. The wires to the telegraph office were cut to stop news of the Kelly Gang’s actions being transmitted. The original post and telegraph office remains largely unchanged in its Powell St location. It is believed that the true purpose of the Gang’s visit to Jerilderie was to have printed Ned’s side of the story that led he and his Gang along the path of outlawry. Samuel Gill, editor of the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette was, by this time, aware of the Gang’s presence in Jerilderie and had left on foot for Carrah Homestead from where information could be sent on to the Deniliquin police. Ned handed over the written account of his life actions to Edward Living, the bank teller, who promised to pass it on to Gill, a promise he never kept. The letter didn’t become public until 100 years after the Jerilderie holdup. The Printing Office of the Jerilderie and Urana Gazette has been restored by Jerilderie Shire Council, and houses The Bolt Exhibition— an exhibition of convicts and bushrangers. Ned’s original missive, known as The Jerilderie Letter, is held at the State Library of Victoria. Jerilderie Shire Council is a member of the Ned Kelly Touring Route, which explores the legend of Ned Kelly through the historical sites of Melbourne, North East Victoria and Southern New South Wales. Further information on the Ned Kelly Touring Route can be found at www.nedkellytouringroute.com.au.
