ROLLING OUT THE REDGUM STORY IN MATHOURA
Photo: Cindy Power
The story of the timber industry in Mathoura is being shared and celebrated through a permanent Timber Heritage Walk along the banks of the Murray at Picnic Point. TEN information panels detailing the story of Mathoura’s red gum timber industry have been mounted on red gum posts and spread throughout the grounds of the Timbercutter restaurant and Picnic Point precinct. The free heritage walk guides visitors through the fascinating story of the ancient river red gum, the birth of the red gum forests, and the booming timber industry that followed. People are invited to take a gentle wander back through history to discover the age-old magic of the river red gum story and to meet the extraordinary pioneers who lived within its pages. Mathoura is renowned as the gateway to one of the largest and most majestic red gum forests 6

in the world. Murray River Council mayor Chris Bilkey said this was an important cultural heritage project that would add another significant tourism product to the Mathoura area. “The Mathoura community is proud of its red gum timber industry heritage so this is a great way to educate the public about the importance of the red gum timber industry and forests,” Cr Bilkey said. “The change of the State Forest to National Park a few years ago highlighted the need to preserve, celebrate and communicate the story of the timber industry, which has played such a significant role in this region’s development.”

WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF OUR VERY COLOURFUL HISTORY Guided walking tours are the best way to get a grasp of how — and why — the twin towns are laid out the way they are and Echuca Historical Society does it better than anyone A GUIDED heritage walking tour shedding new light on Echuca-Moama’s earliest days is the ideal activity for the spring and summer long weekends and holidays. The walks run from September 1 and close for the winter on May 31, 2020. Echuca Historical Society tour guide Gwen Potter can offer you a wealth of facts and insights about how and why the twin towns were founded. Gwen takes visitors to stand on the spot at key sites and learn about the driving forces behind town settlement and the renowned 1800s riverboat era. Visitors can follow in the footsteps of Echuca founder Henry Hopwood, an ex-convict turned ruthless business tycoon, to his punt and bridge locations and other sites unique in Australian history. Gwen’s vivid commentary will cover stories of power and ambition, wool, timber and cattle dealing, illicit drinkers and their escape tunnels, scarlet ladies, colonial law-breakers, devastating floods and lots more during the hour-long tour. EHS president Dot Hammond said the walk “explained clearly where, why and how Echuca was established”. “People get to hear about the background of the earliest characters in town and stories about the heritage buildings we still have — these are certainly not obvious just by walking around,” 12
WHAT'S ON Spring 2019
Dot said. The tour begins and ends at Echuca Historical Museum, corner Dickson and Warren streets, opposite Hopwood Gardens near the port. The cost is $15 per person, $30 for a family. Gwen is also able to board visiting coaches and deliver a commentary that takes in the important Moama historical precinct, as well as sites in Echuca. Book walks and coach tours with Gwen on 0456 223 184. A new exhibition — Fishing the Murray River — will also open on October 6. Read about the town’s first fishing people, Murray River Fishing Company and how the medical society used the river and view photographs of ‘the big one’, the people involved and memorabilia. The exhibition can be seen daily from 10 am until 2 pm at the museum until the end of January. And don’t miss a look around the historical museum itself, open every day from 10 am to 2 pm. Phone the museum on 5480 1325, email eh.soc@bigpond.com and check out the website echucahistoricalsociety.org.au

IT’S TIME TO DIG OUT YOUR PERSONAL PICASSO THE Foundry Arts Space hopes to inspire and engage your creativity and curiosity during its outstanding list of exhibitions and workshops throughout the next few months. Echuca-Moama Arts Initiative’s Denise Makeham said it was an exciting time in the arts and there was no better time to unlock your inner Picasso. Feature artist Rimona Kedem will be at the Foundry between September 6 and October 6. Born in Israel in 1937, Rimona trained extensively in Mexico but credits Australia for where she truly blossomed. The expressionist artist and stained-glass designer’s exhibition will be held in conjunction with ceramicist and sculpture artist Zoe Snyder, with workshop dates to be confirmed through the Foundry’s website and social media. An ink painting workshop by Sofie Dieu will be held on September 28–29.
Born in France, Sofie is a culturally and linguistically diverse artist and has found her passion in ink painting as a way to express her feelings through images on paper. Sofie will show beginners how to get started in the medium of ink painting and follow with a second class on the finer points of floral ink painting inspired by Australian native plants. Between October 11–27, plein artist Ray Hill will hold an exhibition of his inspiring landscape art. This is also an opportunity to start your own outdoor masterpiece by learning techniques and skills from Ray during his workshops throughout October. Ceramicist Kaye Poulton and acrylic artist Esther Costa will hold a combined exhibition from November 1–17. The Foundry Art Space, 13–17 Murray Esplanade, is open six days a week from 10 am – 4 pm (closed Tuesdays).

American Iron and Australian Road Transport History Display showcases all makes and models of trucks 25 years and older. As well as the big rigs, the weekend will feature live music, catering, miniature train rides, tractor pull demonstrations, a jumping castle and face painting. 14 WHAT'S ON Spring 2019
There is also a Thomas the Tank Engine display. Club merchandise will be available to buy. The event, open between 9 am and 4 pm both days, is a fantastic event for the whole family to enjoy. THERE ARE PARTIES … AND THEN THERE IS THE PARTY IF THERE’S ever a party you don’t want to miss, this is it. The fifth annual Breathe Easy Cocktail Party will be held on September 7 and organisers are urging people to get their tickets before they’re sold out. So get your glad rags ready, get your friends together and don’t forget your dancing shoes, because Breathe Easy raises much needed funds and awareness for Cystic Fibrosis research. Last year, the party raised an astonishing $28 924 — the most the group has raised at an event. All proceeds from the night go to the Royal Children’s Hospital CF Research Trust, Cystic Fibrosis Community Care and The Alfred Respiratory Department Fund. “Seeing these results and everyone enjoying themselves on the night 16 WHAT'S ON Spring 2019
makes each year worthwhile and only pushes me to want to continue to do what I can, to raise funds and awareness to make CF stand for Creating Futures for people living with Cystic Fibrosis. And the future is certainly looking bright,” organiser Shari Butcher said. Your ticket includes finger food as well as beverages, entertainment to keep you dancing, lucky door prizes, amazing raffles and silent auction items, as well as a guest speaker to give you some insights into what CF is and the progress which has been made over the years. The Breathe Easy Cocktail Party will be held at 7 pm at Radcliffe’s. Tickets are available via Facebook, online at www.stickytickets.com. au/87873 or in person at 1895 The Royal, 183 Hare St.

The full-day conference on September 19 explores the challenges faced by entrepreneurial, professional and creative business women and provides practical tips and insights into leadership, growth and innovation. MBC marketing and events co‑ordinator Marie-Claire McCaffrey said she was incredibly excited for the fifth instalment of the conference following on from the past four years’ successes. “At our first annual International Women’s Day Brunch on March 5, which was a huge success with more than 200 women in attendance, we raised $3300 for several scholarships for women working in trades and non-traditional industries,” she said. “We are thrilled once again to have GNO Echuca-Moama as our charity partner for the 22 WHAT'S ON Spring 2019

HOT HOOPS FOR BASKETBALL JAMBOREE BASKETBALL Victoria Country’s jamboree is set to descend on Echuca-Moama again this September after the organisation announced a new five-year agreement with Campaspe Shire. Held from September 21–24, the jamboree offers some of the state’s most talented under 12 basketballers, young coaches and referees to further develop their skills. “The jamboree is one of our most exciting events on the calendar as we get to see the newest age group of country stars enter the pathway,” Basketball Victoria Country general manager David Huxtable said. “Players and coaches alike emerge from the jamboree with a suite of new skills and make lifelong friends throughout the state. “It is an incredible opportunity that our best and brightest have earned through their elite work at the under 12 skills days.
30 WHAT'S ON Spring 2019
“We encourage all the players to take on this great opportunity to learn from a variety of new coaches, take on board the lessons, players and strategies from our best coaches and most of all enjoy every moment of the jamboree.” Beth Morris, Kate Chadwick and Indiana Phillips will be the local representatives at the event. The new agreement will see the jamboree remain at Echuca Basketball Stadium until 2023.

GO WANDERING ACROSS THE PLAINS AT TERRICK TERRICK THE Friends of Terrick Terrick National Park will hold its annual weekend outing from October 4–6. Working in conjunction with local rangers of Parks Victoria, the group organises guided walks and minibus tours in Terrick Terrick National Park, north of Mitiamo. There will be static displays, including a display of local-area plants suitable for garden cultivation, as well as posters about the plains-wanderer — Australia’s most-important endangered bird — drawn by local primary school pupils. Presentations will be made on the Friday and Saturday nights. Group secretary Keith Stockwell said the plains-wanderer was a theme of last year’s weekend. “One of the presenters has subsequently appeared on television with some of the plainswanderer chicks raised in Werribee Zoo as part of a captive breeding program,” he said. “A pair of plains-wanderers has been painted on an outside wall of the Mitiamo store.” On the Friday night, convener Jill Millsom will talk about research work being done on local grasslands. You can wake up on the Saturday to an earlymorning bird walk in the Terricks Forest. “These birding sessions are always popular
and less-common bush birds are almost always observed,” Keith said. A courtesy bus will leave the Davies homestead site at 7.15 am sharp. That night, there will be discussion about Bael Bael Nature Conservation Reserve and a presentation by members of Wombat Forestcare. “For those who wish to assist with park maintenance, there will be some working bees, to record fauna living under tiles, to plot and remove gazanias and to assist with wheel cactus control,” Keith said. Terrick Terrick National Park includes rocky outcrops, the largest block of native pine forest remaining in Victoria, native grasslands and a long stretch of Bendigo Creek (with creekside vegetation). “Following wet winters, the wildflower display in early October is usually outstanding,” Keith said. All activities are free and people can book bus tours on arrival. Free camp sites will be available alongside the base for the weekend — a machinery shed at the site of the now-demolished Davies homestead, Mitiamo-Kow Swamp Road about 2 km south of that road’s intersection with Jungaburra Road. Those staying overnight will need to supply their own food. The friends group supplies afternoon tea and supper. WHAT’S ON Spring 2019

GET SET FOR THE GUNNY GOLD CUP GUNBOWER’S famous Gold Cup is back for another year. The Gunbower Racing Club will open its doors to the public on October 5 for its annual one-day race meeting. Excitement is already building after the club underwent resurfacing works earlier this year, while the club’s grandstand is also getting its own facelift. A total of seven races are on the cards for spectators, as jockeys and trainers aim to etch their name into the club’s history. Spectators are invited to further indulge themselves into the day’s events by upgrading their experience to a marquee package which can include food and beverages. There will be kid’s activities, fashion on the fields and live entertainment on course acting as a backdrop to the main event. A bus is available for patrons at a cost of $5 each way with pick-up available in Cohuna, Echuca, Kerang and Leitchville. Visitors wishing to drive themselves to the event will have ample parking space at no cost. Tickets are available at general admission price of $20, while tickets cost just $10 if bought in a group of 10 or more people. Children under the age of 16 are free, although they must be accompanied by an adult. Concession tickets are available to buy at the gate.

SOMEONE’S JUNK, SOMEONE’S TREASURE, IT ALL HAPPENS AT TONGALA THE Tongala community will once again hold its annual town garage sale on October 5. From 8 am, about 60 houses are expected to open to the public, selling everything from furniture, household and electrical goods, jewellery, bikes, tools, camping equipment, garden supplies, saddles, bric-a-brac and vintage items. “It’s a wonderful day to search for a bargain or treasure while enjoying all Tongala has to offer,” organiser Sue Duggan said. “Last year’s garage sale was a huge success with 57 seller sites booked, with buyers, potential buyers and visitors coming into our town from far and wide.
“This annual community event is aimed to raise community spirit, support local businesses as well as recycle goods and put money back into the local community’s pockets. “It also aimed to promote Tongala’s awareness as a great place to live as a real alternative to larger towns. “Tongala is so fortunate to have an annual garage sale of this scale, and I encourage the locals and visitors to continue to use and support this marvellous event.” Maps will be available at the CFA and kiosk in Mangan St and CWA in Miller St from 8 am.

CURTAIN GOES UP ON LATEST DILLMAC SHOW STUDENTS from Dillmac Entertainment are expected to wow the crowds at its annual showcase on October 25–26. About 220 youngsters from Echuca-Moama, Tongala, Kyabram, Nathalia, Tatura, Shepparton, Merrigum and Stanhope will perform three shows, from two-year-old tots and tunes students through to parents and past students. Director Liz Dillon encouraged people to come along and support the performing arts. “Music bringing people together will be evident in this show as the students learn choreography and vocal parts, band parts and tots and tune routines throughout the year, to join up together with strangers from all over the region,” Liz said.
“Over the three shows, close to 100 items will be performed and hopefully more than 250 ticketholders will come to each show. With four different stages, there will be plenty to look at.” On November 28, there will be a live show for all Echuca and Kyabram performing arts students from level one through to performance level. If performing arts is something you would like to look at getting your children into, then this is the show to come and see. For information on this event, contact Liz at lizdillon@dillmac.com Dillmac is in its 19th year, and has been active in Echuca for five years, offering performing arts and instrumental and pre-school classes

THE BIG COHUNA — IT GOES FIVE DAYS THIS YEAR THE 2019 Big Cohuna Festival is on again and with five days of festivities, it’s something you won’t want to miss. Designed to showcase everything that is Cohuna, the festival offers a vibrant, fun-filled atmosphere where you can enjoy live music, great food and many hours of entertainment. It is held between October 30 and November 5 and features more than 40 events, including open farms, home art studios, a market, Gunbower Creek cruises and Melbourne Cup Day celebration. Organiser Jodie Hay said the festival, which had been running for about 20 years, attracted about 2000 visitors to the town. “It’s doubled in size over the years,” she said. “It’s really well supported, probably because it’s so eclectic. It has something for everyone.” The event kicks off with the Big Cohuna street food festival and the St Mary’s rock and roll concert at the memorial hall. Other events include an art exhibition at Factory and Field, Parkrun, Big Cohuna Bower Breakfast, yoga session, CFA open house, Cohuna Consolidated School Creekside Fair and duck derby, skate park workshops and competition and a Wetlander Cruise and the popular farmer’s and makers market. Other events include Kerang Vintage Car Club display, wetlander breakfast with the bird’s cruise, catch-a-carp competition, Shukura Park farm spring tour, rock painting activity. The Monday breakfast will be held at the Elm Tree Nursery from 8 am – 10 am. MAKE SURE YOU ARE PAID UP FOR
KOYUGA’S MELBOURNE CUP THREE years ago, the Koyuga community came together looking for ways to invigorate their community space and raise money for projects to improve and better use their local hall and recreation reserve. From there, the concept of a fancy-dress dinner/dance/Calcutta was born — an annual gathering of the local community and visitors every Melbourne Cup weekend. Now in its third year, the Koyuga Cup has become the main fundraising opportunity for the tiny town. Friends of the Koyuga Hall run the event, with all proceeds being raised directly benefitting the Koyuga Hall and Recreation Reserve, which is 9 km from Tongala and 18 km from Echuca. The event has been fully booked each year and this year is looking the same. Every year has a different theme — in 2018 it was the 1920s and the inaugural year was devoted, obviously, to Melbourne Cup winners. About 110 people are expected to don their favourite children’s story book or nursery rhyme character for this year’s event on November 2. The night is packed full of fun for over 18s. A prepaid ticket includes a two-course meal, live music, entry into a super sweep, Fashions on the Field, a phantom call of some very old Melbourne Cup winners and a lucky seat prize. A licensed bar will quench the thirst of party goers and there is strictly no BYO. The main drawcard is different for everyone, but the Calcutta gives you the opportunity to have that special interest in the Melbourne Cup. Camping overnight is permitted in the designated area by request and bus transport is available. Inquiries to Amanda Souter on 0427 591 139 or Melinda Smith on 0400 902 941. WHAT’S ON Spring 2019 49

GO COUNTRY. GO BETTER. GO RV COUNTRY. Looking for a friendly country town to relax for a few days while enjoying on-site musical entertainment and the fellowship of other road travellers? If so, the eighth annual Kyabram RV Country Music Festival is the place to go. Kyabram’s Country Music Festival has become a popular destination for RV and caravan enthusiasts, as well as country music fans. Last year’s event hosted a swag of fantastic performers from around Australia, with a great line-up of shows expected again this year. The event will be held at the Kyabram Showgrounds from November 7–10 and incorporates the popular bush market in the main street on November 8. The high number of early registrations indicates the event is becoming a regular fixture on the festival circuit, with many RV travellers planning well in advance to make Kyabram a
destination stopover during their travels. The festival offers a great base for visitors who wish to explore the area and its attractions, including the Kyabram Fauna Park, where a dump point is located. Another dump point has been installed at the showgrounds. The showgrounds will open for a full week from November 5 to accommodate travellers who want to spend a few extra days in town before or after the festival.

LIVE THEATRE OFFERS A BLAST FROM THE PAST ECHUCA-MOAMA Theatre Company is heading back to the ‘80s and the jungle for its junior productions. Following the success of The Addams Family, the company will perform The Jungle Book Kids and Back to the ‘80s at the Paramount in November. Twenty-five children; aged between eight and 12, will star in The Jungle Book Kids, which is a 30-minute musical, based on the novel by Rudyard Kipling and the Disney film. “It’s a fun-filled show that is sure to entertain young and old,” director Lesley Summers said. “We will have all the jungle characters, from wolves, elephants and monkeys, on stage and we hope everyone joins in when Baloo starts singing Bare Necessities.” Back to the ‘80s is a two-hour production starring 34 teenagers from around the district. Co-director Zali McKee said the musical
followed Corey Palmer who “reminisces about his final year of high school in the ‘80s when he was vying for student body president and trying to get the girl of his dreams”. “It’s also filled with 80s classics such as Footloose, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun and I Had the Time of My Life,” she said. “It also includes a lot of laughs, a Star Wars dream sequence and throwbacks to the time that was the ‘80s. It’s a fun-filled show that’s great for all ages.” The Jungle Book Kids and Back to the ‘80s will both be held at the Paramount, from November 8–10 and November 8–17 respectively.

ECHUCA-MOAMA’S Pop and Pour Festival showcases the region’s Perricoota wine region. Held on November 23, the progressive festival uses a fleet of festival shuttles to explore five Murray River venues, each showcasing local wine and produce — with live musicians from noon to 6 pm. This year they include The Woolshed, St Anne’s Winery, Perricoota Vines Retreat, Rich River Golf Club and Three Black Sheep. Organiser Jacqui Wegener said buses continuously moved from venue to venue all afternoon, with participants able to choose which venues they wanted to go to and for how long. The fact the event is progressive is the primary reason why the festival is so successful, according to Jacqui. “People meet new people at the bar at one venue and then they might run into them two or three venues later and they are all happy and social,” she said. “It is a really happy, vibrant festival and each venue has a different vibe to the next.
“Each venue will showcase local produce and if they can’t offer a beverage of their own, it will be sourced from another local producer.” This year there will also be a ‘Venga Bus’ which is a party bus with a sound system, dance pole and smoke machine, as well as a roving magician and facepainting will gain be on the cards. The American Hotel will host the official afterparty in its car park. There are 2500 tickets available this year for the event, which has been endorsed by Destination NSW for its proven ability to increase overnight visitation to the region. Waranga Basin, to the north-east of the town, is a tourist drawcard providing opportunities for boating, fishing and camping, while south of Rushworth is Whroo Historic Reserve, which represents the remnants of what was once a thriving gold mining town of 1000 people and 139 buildings.

A life size Oppy bronze statue is situated in Moore Street alongside many colourful and interesting murals created by artists during the annual Mural Festival each March. A heritage walk from the main bridge to the red brick bridge takes in the old sale yards bull ring, the old water tower and shire hall, while the western bank of the Campaspe River has been set aside as a passive recreation reserve. THE ART OF ATTRACTING AN ART CROWD Art lovers are in for a treat over spring with Echuca-Moama Artists staging three exhibitions over the next three months PAINTINGS with Haiku is an exhibition by the students of Margaret Glasson. It is inspired by Japanese Haiku poetry, in which each poem has 17 syllables, in lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images from the natural world. All the paintings in the exhibition are accompanied by a Haiku verse, rather than a title.

GUNNY GETS ITSELF INTO THE SILO ART SCENE
GUNBOWER hopes to join the district’s art trail after a stunning new mural was created to attract visitors to town. Rochester silo artist Jimmy Dvate spent a week painting the creek and local birdlife artwork on the side of the Gunbower Hotel in June. Gunbower Hotel’s Richard McGillivray funded the project, which partner Susie Varapodio hopes will help reinvigorate the struggling town. “What’s happening in the dairy industry is devastating and it’s caused our area severe stress,” she said. ”We can’t let country towns die so we need to look at different avenues to keep them going. One is tourism as it will help to keep pubs, servos and shops going. “If we can educate more tourists of venturing out a bit more and come out here for a day and spend a bit of money, it will help everyone. “We’re trying to market the area as a day trip destination. Come and see Torrumbarry Weir, our mural, The Carriages at
Lockington, Echuca, the murals at Tongala and the Rochester silo. “Tourists can help keep our smaller country towns going.” Ms Varapodio said the project took 12 months — from conception to completion. “I love it. We have it lit up at night so you can see it at any time of the day,” she said. “We’re just hoping it brings a few more people to the town.”
