celebrations will be held in Moama after Campaspe Shire and Murray River councils combined their festivities in 2019. While February is the shortest month of the year, it is the biggest in EchucaMoama’s event calendar. The twin towns will double in size over the second weekend as the world’s biggest ski race – the Southern 80 – comes to town. That is followed the next weekend by the Riverboats Music Festival, where you can listen to three days of

So check out everything we have on offer. And while you’re here, don’t forget to visit our smaller surrounding towns for their picturesque sights and country charm. LET’S HAVE A (NATIONAL) PARTY ECHUCA-MOAMA will again join forces to celebrate Australia Day. In a show of true Aussie spirit, our councils on both sides of the river will unite on January 26 for the second time. Hosted by EchucaMoama Rotary Club, this year’s celebrations will be held in Moama for the first time, at Kerrabee Soundshell. 10 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
The event kicks off from 7 am for early bird barbecue breakfast before the official programs starts at 7.55 am with a Welcome to Country by Uncle Rick Ronnan, Australia Day awards and address by the Australia Day Ambassador. Club chairman Mike Stansbury said there would be a flypast of vintage aircraft from the Echuca Aero Club — a tradition since World War II. “There will also be vintage and historic cars displayed by our two car clubs,” he said. In addition to the presentation of Australia Day awards, a citizenship ceremony will also be held, plus live entertainment. Australia Day ceremonies will also be held in smaller towns across Campaspe Shire and Murray River Council including Mathoura, where
breakfast and presentations will be held at Soldiers Memorial Park from 8 am. Campaspe Shire mayor Adrian Weston said Australia Day was about coming together as a nation. “What happens in local communities should be a reflection of that,” Cr Weston said. On Australia Day Eve, Echuca-Moama Rotary Club will also hold a commemoration dinner at
Moama Bowling Club. The regular event, presided over by the Australia Day Ambassador for Murray River Council, will be held at 6 pm for 6.30 pm start. The event is attended by dignitaries from the councils, as well as many of the nominees for the Australia Day awards. The cost is $30 per person, which includes dinner and drinks at club prices. SPLISH, SPLASH YOU’LL BE HAVING A BALL MOAMA’S Aqua Island opens for a fun summer season on December 13. And new session times are now three hours long, instead of the 50-minutes other aqua parks offer. “This makes it a great day out for everyone,” Aqua Island’s Jayne Bares said. “We have great new obstacles to conquer on the park this year and we have completed extensive landscaping.” Aqua Island, at 1725 Perricoota Rd, has lifeguards on duty and provides a lifejacket and safety briefing for all sessions. “This year we have a lifeguard mascot — Baywatch Baxter — who will be there on some sessions to meet and greet,” Jayne said. “We have large shady areas with shade sails and picnic tables as well as trees, so you can 14 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
bring a picnic rug along and sit under. We also have bean bags to relax in.” To go on the park, you need to be at least three years old, with children aged up to seven having to be accompanied by an adult. Food and drinks are available from the kiosk. “Our hot chips and slushies are crowd favorites,” Jayne said. Aqua Island caters for Christmas, end of year and birthday parties and offers large group discounts. You can book on the website at aquaisland. com.au which has all open days and times. BRIDGE TO BRIDGE — AND DRY FEET THE COHUNA Bridge to Bridge is back again in 2020. In its 27th year, the Bridge to Bridge is getting seriously bigger. In 2020 it will offer not one, but seven events while raising thousands of dollars for the Cohuna District Hospital. And none involve water. They include a half marathon (21.1 km); 12.5 km trail run; 6.5 km fun run/walk; mini miler for the juniors; 6.5 km junior cycle, 25 km cycle and 50 km cycle. Cohuna Progress Association organiser Kirstin Nicholson said the event was shaping up to be a jam-packed, fun-filled day for locals and visitors of all abilities. “We’re so excited about this line-up and hope

you will share in our excitement to help raise money for the hospital,” she said. “Money raised at the 2019 event purchased two specialist chairs for patients in the dialysis and infusion day clinic.” The Cohuna Progress Association took over from the local Lions Club at the conclusion of the 25th running and the group can hardly wait for the 2020 event. Along with hundreds of dedicated runners and cyclists, organisers are expecting many more to sign up over the race weekend. OH, CAROLS, LET US SING ALONG MOAMA will come alive this Christmas for the annual Moama Lions Club Carols by Candlelight at the Kerrabee Soundshell. Held on Sunday, December 15, the event is in its 27th year and is only growing in popularity. ‘‘We had thousands come last year, so it’s hard to guess how many will come this year,’’ Lions member Bob Hardwick said. ‘‘This is a fantastic night and what better way to start the Christmas celebrations.’’ The night will feature live entertainment from local performers, a brass band, barbecue and — of course — a visit from Santa on the firetruck. “All our performers come from Moama and surrounding areas and are all volunteers,” 18
WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
Bob said. “Some have been giving their time to the carols for over 20 years now and we certainly appreciate all our performers.” Residents are encouraged to bring a chair or picnic blanket and sing along to carols. The night kicks off with a barbecue at 5.30pm, with carols starting at 6.30pm. Candles and programs will be available on the night. For details, phone Bob Hardwick on 0418 313 411 or visit the Moama Lions Club Facebook page.

COHUNA’S GOTCHA – HOOK, LINE AND SINKER THE Cohuna Fishing Classic has got us hooked, and it’s back for its second year on the picturesque waters of the Gunbower Creek in Cohuna. Held on cod opening weekend, December 6-8, the catch-and-release competition is open to adult and junior entrants and land-based and boating anglers, with its two-section course stretching over more than 12km of water. Entrants for the 2019 competition will be capped at 150 in an effort to see the competition remain manageable for volunteers and the Gunbower Creek accessible for competitors, without overcrowding. The Cohuna Kangas Football Complex will remain as home base. The proceeds from the competition will be used to support the local community, with a donation made to Cohuna District Hospital and an amount held in trust to support future local recreational fishing initiatives. Competition categories have changed this year based on feedback from last year’s competitors. With more than $10,000 worth of cash and 26 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20

Competition categories include adult and junior grand champion angler, adult and junior longest Murray cod, longest golden perch and carp, champion carp angler and lucky entry prizes. Fishing times have also been extended, starting at 7am both days. WHAT A LAUGH – THE COMEDY FEAST EXPECT an evening of laughs at the Echuca-Moama Comedy Feast on December 7 – the sell-out night of stand-up comedy. Organiser Michael Anderson staged his inaugural event last year to an almost-capacity crowd at Rich River Golf Club. “We figured why not bring the comedians to us, instead of having to travel to Melbourne, Bendigo and Shepparton, where most of the touring comedians go,” he said. The MC will be Des Dowling again (warning, don’t sit in the front row unless you want to be part of his act) after he lit up the room with laughs in 2018. A country boy, born and bred, Dowling started life as a journalist before – after years of self-doubt – launched himself as a fulltime comedian at the tender age of 31. As well as bringing his own humour and some new material to the show, as MC he will get the audience primed for Daniel Connell and Fiona O’Loughlin. Connell is a rising presence on the Australian comedy circuit and the black humour of O’Loughlin has made her a star for the past 20 years. “Daniel Connell could easily be described as the ideal Aussie comedian; affable, loveable and hilarious,” Michael said. 28 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
“His observational, dry, often unanticipated comedy has seen him take to stages all over the country – and now Echuca-Moama.” Headlining the evening, Fiona O’Loughlin comes to the twin towns as one of the most in demand comedians in this country. Although a late starter, she has put together an award-winning career for almost 20 years. “Fiona performs to packed houses in venues and festivals across the globe, starting with her success winning the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s best newcomer award in 2001,” Michael said. “In recent years Fiona has overcome a welldocumented ‘battle with the bottle’. This, like the other aspects of her life, has become ‘material’ for her stand-up. And Fiona is even funnier sober.” Echuca-Moama Comedy Feast will be at Moama Bowling Club from 8pm on December 7. If there are any tickets left, they can be bought online at emcf.com.au

Two one-act plays, Last Tango in Little Grimley and Last Panto in Little Grimley, will be performed at The Foundry Arts Space in Echuca from February 28 to March 1. Trish Deakin and Lesley Summers will reunite to direct the shows which promise to be something audiences will never forget. They are both 45 minutes long and feature the same four actors. Last Tango in Little Grimley tells the story of the Little Grimley Amateur Dramatic Society, which is in trouble. The membership has dwindled to four and the audience isn’t much bigger. If they don’t come up with some rent money soon, they’re going to be thrown out of the village hall, so chairman Gordon argues there is only one thing that sells tickets these days – sex. Thus, begins the chaotic and hilarious build-up to an evening of extraordinary homegrown drama. Last Panto in Little Grimley is the first sequel to Last Tango and sees the four club members tackle the Christmas panto with predictably hilarious results. Performances will be held at 7.30pm on February 28 and 29 and 1.30pm on February 29 and March 1. Seating is strictly limited, with tables of six or 10 available. Bring a plate of nibbles and some drinks.

FOUNDRY’S GIFT TO ECHUCA-MOAMA THE Foundry Arts Space will open its members gallery gift shop from December 6 to January 26. With members creating a variety of handcrafted pieces, this is a great opportunity to find a beautiful handmade gift for Christmas or just treat yourself or somebody else to something special. From February 14-23, The Foundry Arts Space will hold an extraordinary and unusual exhibition of a waste cardboard installation. John Bradley’s ‘Mandala: Dancing in the Bardo’ is an explorative exhibition with more than 100 figures made from recycled material. Most are cardboard and paper which are arranged to represent the traditional Himalayan Buddhist Mandala of the 100 peaceful and wrathful Deities of the Tibetan book ‘The Great Liberation Through Hearing’. 42 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
There will also be an inclusion of large paintings which will work in unison with the Mandala. For more than 14 years, John has practised art largely around explorations of Buddhist themes. This exhibition brings a focus to the recyclable world we live in and joins interpretation of exploring ideas around sacred space of the Mandala. This display may be something you have never experienced before and an opportunity for enlightenment. John will conduct chanting workshops and a departure and dissolution workshop on February 16 and 22 respectively.

HOOKED ON A POETIC HISTORY
FIND out about the fish in the Murray Darling system at Echuca Historical Society’s latest exhibition. Fishing the Murray River exhibition has everything from photographs and stories of our early fishing people, commercial fishing, recreational and modern-day fishing to a range of memorabilia. You can also find out what leeches had to do with fishing and view the. The exhibition is open daily from 10am until 2pm until January 31 (closed Christmas Eve and day). The museum is at 1 Dickson St, Echuca, and groups are welcome. To arrange a time, phone 5480 1325 between 10am and 2pm or email eh.soc@bigpond.com In other exciting news, the Echuca Audio Poetry Trail is available to residents and visitors. In the Echuca heritage precinct, several poems inspired by our heritage, the natural environment and the atmosphere of this special
place can be heard. Go to echucahistoricalsociety.org.au and scroll through to Poetry Trail to listen to the poems. QR codes are also displayed at five listening stages indicated by poetry trail plaques. By following the map (GPS) and using a SCAN app on a smart phone, visitors can listen to readings of these poems which acknowledge our early people, those who came afterwards and the ever-challenging river and bush. The Echuca Poetry Trail is a project of the Echuca Historical Society – a volunteer organisation bringing the history and heritage of Echuca to the community, enriching the cultural experiences of people who live in or visit Echuca – particularly those who have not seen poetry as part of their lives or the world around them. Poetry trails by their very nature can create a better understanding of the power of poetry to appeal to the imagination, to inspire, to entertain and to move – for people of all ages and helps to build awareness of the links between poetry, people and place. Using media and technologies to bring a different approach to an audio trail focusing on local history and heritage, this trail can be viewed on the website echucahistoricalsociety. org.au A brochure of the poetry trail is also available at Echuca-Moama Visitor Information Centre. HAVING A HOLIDAY ON THE CHEAP AS A working mother of two children, school holidays either excite or scare me. Trying to balance work with family is a tough gig on any normal week, so throw school holidays into the mix and life can become a serious juggle. If you’re lucky enough to score the entire two weeks off, good for you and I’ll try not to imagine you soaking up the sun at some beachside resort with kids’ activities galore. But if you’re like me — who managed to get a few days off here and there — take the opportunity to explore your own back yard. Thousands of visitors come from far and wide to see what we have to offer so why don’t you be a tourist in your own town? Your kids will love it. Now we are lucky enough to have some fantastic attractions across Echuca-Moama and you just have to Google kids’ activities to find we have paddlesteamers, a discovery centre, water park, trampoline complex, science centre, mini golf, indoor pool, animal ranch, cinemas and more. All of which are great fun, but if you want to spend quality time with your little ones and not a fortune, there are so many cheap or free options to choose from. Echuca-Moama is so family friendly, it makes for the perfect day out whether you have babies, toddlers, bigger children and even teens. I always start with a trip to Echuca library 48 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
because who doesn’t love reading a good book or playing a bit of scrabble while overlooking Echuca’s stunning Aquatic Reserve? Plus, it has a great collection of DVDs and magazines, as well as free Wi-Fi. Just up the road on Murray Esplanade is the Foundry Arts Space, which hosts a variety of interesting exhibitions throughout the year. A perfect way to get in a bit of culture for the day and it’s all free. From there, stroll along the scenic walkway to the historic Port of Echuca where you will be transported back to yesteryear. Obviously, a trip on a paddlesteamer is something you should do once in your life, but if you have a big family and don’t want to spend all your money in the one place, the MV Mary Ann is free to board. All you need to do is buy an item from the allday cruising cafe menu. Once you hop off, Riverboat Dock is a great place to explore and check out the old paddlesteamers and luxury houseboats lined up along the riverbank.
Bring your walking shoes and make your way to Scenic Drive or walk up to Hopwood Gardens’ new play space. Designed in line with the surrounding historical precinct and thanks to the ideas of local children, it features natural elements, a paddlesteamer, animal features and traditional play equipment including a mini water feature. With ample seating, you could grab a coffee or snack from one the countless cafes or bakeries around town while you sit and watch the kids play. Another great playground is the Moama Echuca Adventure Playpark off Perricoota Rd in Moama which has a specially designed family swing — perfect if you want to swing with your baby. The playpark sits alongside the picturesque botanic gardens which features a timber bridge and a bronze sculpture of ballet dancer Helen Choules.
It’s a perfect spot for a picnic lunch, with barbecues, tables and undercover seating available. While you’re on that side of the river, Moama Skate Park is a free venue where your youngsters can skate, scoot or cycle to their hearts’ content. Speaking of cycling, Moama also boasts Five Mile Mountain Bike Track which is worth checking out. Echuca-Moama is a haven for bushwalkers and cyclists so make the most of all our walking and bike trails. If the weather is warm enough, head down to Moama Beach for a swim or just enjoy watching the boats go by. And if you’re in need of some retail therapy you don’t need to spend a fortune. As well as range of excellent op shops, we have the Echuca-Moama Market at Moama’s Soundshell, Echuca Farmers’ Market at Alton Reserve. And if that’s not enough, don’t forget about our smaller surrounding towns – Gunbower, Torrumbarry, Tongala and Rochester — which are worth visiting for their visually stunning murals and country hospitality. SO MUCH MOOSIC
IN LITTLE OLD GIRGARRE THE tiny dairying township of Girgarre is punching way above its weight in bringing brilliant acoustic music-making to locals and visitors alike. The 14th Girgarre Moosic Muster takes place on January 8-12, offering five days of concerts, dozens of workshops and sessions, continuous jamming and plenty of novelty events. And all the music is free – which organisers say makes it the most affordable and inclusive acoustic event around. Highlights this year include
54 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
opening night with The Biggest Bush Band and bush dance; expanded open mic opportunities due to strong demand; at least 50 workshops, jams and singing opportunities; big, varied program for ukulele players at their own dedicated venue and free public evening concerts with leading bands. Topics offered for the first time include a rock ‘n’ roll session, melodic banjo, compiling a performance set list, bodhran (Irish drum), voice skills, using the guitar capo, and a Buddy Holly singalong. Other workshops are expected to cover tin whistle, double bass, banjo, mandolin, piano accordion, fiddle, guitar, harmonica, blues, playing tunes, auto harp, and song writing. Music styles range from bluegrass, folk, blues, jazz, country and pop to Celtic and Aussie bush
songs, gospel and contemporary music. Popular features such as the special Jigarre Jammin’ community jam, the impromptu Out of the Hat Band, harmony singing, the hilarious joke competition and the Sunday gospel singalong are all back. The free kids’ muster, comprising comic characters, music, crafts, poetry and games, is popular with primary schoolchildren. And there’s even free instrument loans for those wanting to try something new. Continuous informal jams take place throughout the site and around the adjacent camp ground, and everyone is welcome to join in. “We are all about participation, learning, sharing and enjoying,” muster director Jan Smith said. “Your age and playing level don’t matter. We are attracting many leading acoustic bands and it’s a brilliant opportunity to jam all day and all night and learn from the best. “As well, we are getting a huge crowd for the free evening concerts who just want to listen, to kick back on a balmy summer’s night with their drinks and nibbles and just take in the sounds.” The muster began as a couple of musicians supporting the first farmers’ market held in the
little community. The market was a way to lift spirits and revenue at the height of the crushing millennium drought 14 years ago. Girgarre is between Echuca and Shepparton, a half-hour drive from each town. The main muster venue is the air-conditioned Girgarre Memorial Hall in Morgan Crescent. The only charge is for camping at the site, but the low fee includes three meals and full use of amenities over the entire muster period. The highly popular Girgarre market takes place on the Sunday at the site, with visiting bands playing continuously. The full program will be available when finalised at girgarre.com.au

MURAL ART ON A
GRAND SCALE ROCHESTER’s Moore St precinct will once again been transformed into a hive of colour, telling eight different stories in February. Starting on February 22, eight artists will spend the week creating an image which depicts this year’s theme of Rochester: past, present or future. The festival runs over seven days and has proved popular with the artists and the many visitors who call in during the week and others who stop and admire the finished work throughout the year. 58 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
Committee member Judy Anderson said only eight artists are selected each year to paint their interpretation of the theme. “The festival attracts a strong, talented field of artists from across Australia hoping to compete,” she said “We’re in our seventh year and we’re growing in popularity.
“People come to see the silos in Rochester and the sports museum and this gives people another extra thing to see when they come to town.” The Meet the Artists dinner will be held at the Rochester Racecourse Recreation Reserve, Northern Hwy, Rochester on February 22. The festival finishes on February 29, when the judges deliver their decision. First prize receives $5000 and the work will be displayed permanently in the Mural Park’s
‘‘Avenue of Honour’’. There is also a $1000 highly commended prize and people‘s choice award. The completed mini murals and full-sized murals are for sale. For information, visit rochestermuralfest.com.au

RACE INTO THE FESTIVE SEASON IT’S the most wonderful time of the year. And a perfect time to be at the races with Echuca Racing Club holding three meetings during December and the Harness Racing Club staging its New Year’s night meeting. ERC’s annual Christmas meeting is on December 4, followed by another on December 12 and its New Year’s Eve twilight meeting on December 31. Echuca Racing Club general manager Phillip Evans said the Christmas meeting was one the club looked forward to all season. “It’s a great opportunity to have a gathering with a difference,” he said. “It’s a special time as families and friends are starting to come together, and we really enjoy that the racing club gets the opportunity to be
a place that people can come and enjoy each other’s company. “Our Christmas races are a fantastic way to see in the festive season, and we look forward to welcoming locals and visitors for a great day at the track.” Phil said the New Year’s Eve races were all about family, kids and fun. “We have a great focus on the whole family have a complete experience and believe that’s what keeps bringing them back every year,” he added. “We’ve got great activities for the kids, and that makes the meeting much more enjoyable for parents because there is something for everyone, it’s casual, it’s relaxed and it’s a great way to >>

Safe boating on NSW waterways When it comes to the Murray River, which borders Victoria and New South Wales, the laws of NSW apply. Wear a lifejacket Lifejackets are the most important piece of safety equipment on any recreational vessel. An approved lifejacket must be carried for each person on board most vessels. It must be the correct size for the wearer, in good condition and worn in a range of situations. For example:
WE A R A LIFEJACK ET
• Children under 12 years are required to wear a lifejacket at all times in a vessel under 4.8m, and when in an open area of a vessel less than 8m that is underway • On vessels less than 4.8m, everyone must wear a lifejacket when boating at night or when boating alone • On canoes and kayaks, everyone must wear a lifejacket at most times, including at night or when boating alone. These are only some examples of the lifejacket wearing requirements on NSW waterways. If using inflatable lifejackets, these must be serviced at least every 12 months or at longer intervals in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. For more information visit rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime.
For more information contact Roads and Maritime Services 13 12 36
rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime
Alcohol and drug offences Breath testing, including random breath testing (RBT), can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows: • 0.00 for recreational vessel operators aged under 18 years • Less than 0.02 for commercial vessel operators over 18 years • Less than 0.05 for recreational vessel operators over 18 years The operator of a vessel includes anyone steering or exercising control over its course or direction, and includes the observer in a ski boat or PWC and anyone being towed.
Safety on houseboats When you hire a houseboat you will be advised how many people are legally allowed on the vessel at any one time, whether underway or moored. The maximum number on any houseboat is 12, but this could be less depending on the size of the vessel. If you exceed the maximum number of people you may affect the buoyancy of the vessel and cause it to capsize. Never jump from houseboats. It is an offence and you could hit unseen snags in the water, or slip and hit the edge of the boat.
When towing or wake surfing You must have an observer onboard who is responsible for observing the towed people and reporting all matters affecting them to the master, including vessels approaching from behind. The observer must be at least 16 years of age or hold a boat driving licence, must not be under the influence of alcohol or a drug, and should be familiar with the standard hand signals. Consider the impact of your vessel’s wash on other people and the environment, ensuring your wash does not have a dangerous, damaging or unreasonable impact. For more rules relating to towing activities, visit the Roads and Maritime website.

CHERRIES
ripe for the picking
STONE fruit season is in full swing and cherry farmers Bill and Nan Martin are expecting a busy few months. Martin Family Cherries has just moved its sales on-farm to its Gulval Rd property, with cherries now available at the orchard gate. “At this stage we do not allow ‘pick your own’, the main reason being the type of treatment the fruiting buds receive when picking the cherry impacts its ability to produce the next year,” Bill said. Bill and Nan started growing cherries on its 20-acre block in 1999, before selling their produce the following year, literally from the kitchen table where sorting took place. Along with Bill’s son Campbell, they now tend about 2000 trees, and the amount those trees produce each year is entirely dependent on what kind of weather the season brings. They are considered relatively unique growers in a region that is known for crops of grain or grapes. “Our season ends when our crop runs out and we do not source fruit from elsewhere,” Bill said. “We grow about 12 different varieties of cherry tree which ripen at various times of the season.” Cherries are sold in 1kg, 2kg and 5kg boxes and the family’s famous cherry ice cream, jams and chutneys are still available at the orchard. Their jams are made to a traditional family recipe using their hand-picked, succulent cherries and are 100 per cent preservative free. The combination cherry chutney made with currants and spices is known as a great alternative to serve with Christmas meats. Speaking of the festive season, they family 70 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20

ART lovers are encouraged to attend two exhibitions at Alton Gallery this summer. Noted plein air artist Ray Hill will showcase about 45 works at the Something Different exhibition, on display from December 5 to January 25. There are two components to this exhibition - paintings of Australia at war and vignettes of life from Ray’s travels in Australia and overseas. From Kialla, Ray travels Australia extensively to be able to paint on location with the Australian Plein-Air Artists’ Group, of which he has been a founding member. En plein air is a French expression that means “in the open air” and refers to the act of painting outdoors. Artists are able to capture the light and movement that can only come from being in the natural environment. Between February and March, EchucaMoama Artists will hold its members exhibition. Gallery director Veronica Lamb said My Favourite Tree exhibition would include paintings from more than 40 local artists, with a wide variety of interpretations, styles and mediums. “Members will paint their favourite trees, and for different reasons and meanings,” she said. Gallery hours are Fridays from 10am to 2.30pm, Saturdays from 10am to 1pm, or by appointment. Entry is free. Inquiries to Veronica on 0439 460 690.

SOUTHERN 80 – A HI-OCTANE NEED FOR SERIOUS SPEED IT’S the pinnacle of ski racing, and the biggest sporting event of the summer in the twin towns. From February 7-9, the best in the business will descend on the Murray River for the 51st running of the Southern 80, the world’s premier ski racing event. The 2020 race will be run in the shadow of a historic 2019 race, where the team from TR obliterated the record for the race, finishing in a blaze of glory in an incredible 29:22.21. The race also saw Arkham Asylum complete the race as the third team ever to finish in less than 30 minutes at 29:56, a time that would have won in any year but two of the history of the event. But the weekend of the 80 is about so much more than just the race itself. 78 WHAT'S ON Summer 2019-20
