48 JUST DOWN THE ROAD

It’s spring in the twin towns and that means Echuca-Moama kicks into action.

55 LOCAL WINERIES

And what a jam packed season it is. We have everything on the go from horse racing to field days to festivals and fundraisers. Our weather really lends itself to outdoor activity and there is always plenty to keep you busy. Nothing says spring more than horse racing and Echuca Racing Club hold their very popular Melbourne Cup Day meet in November. Thousands flock to the track to make the most of a great day of racing and the outstanding fashions on the field event. But Echuca is not the only place to go — Gunbower host their annual race day in October and you won’t find any better place to take in great country hospitality on one of the most picturesque tracks in the state. There is also plenty of harness racing action on the go as well. If racing is not your thing, don’t despair we have plenty of other things to keep you busy. Why not jump in your car and head out to Cohuna and participate in the Big Cohuna Festival — a showcase of everything Cohuna. The five-day event features an art show, creek side fair, farm open day, fishing competition, yoga, cooking and the popular farmers and

makers market. In 2017 the Pop ‘n’ Pour Festival kicked off and what a successful event that was. Showcasing Echuca-Moama’s great venues, the regions wine, food and entertainment, Pop ‘n’ Pour sold out in its inaugural year and all indicators are showing 2018 will be even better with additional venues doubling the fun — organisers are expecting a big one. The Deni Ute Muster is celebrating their 20th party on the plains with international country music star Carrie Underwood headlining the show alongside Australian greats including Kasey Chambers. The muster is packed with heaps of great entertainment including a circus, inflatable fun, kids’ club, lawn-mower races and that’s just to get you started. And don’t forget there are plenty of great community events to throw your support behind including Relay For Life, Breathe Easy Cocktail Party, EMTC’s junior production Madagascar and Sweat vs Steam. There is so much to see and do in the twin towns over spring, what are you waiting for? Get in there and join the fun. Sophie Baldwin Editor

BIG COHUNA

IS A HUGE EVENT November 2–6 NATURAL wonders, agriculture, local business and identities, in fact everything that is Cohuna, will be celebrated when the town opens to the public for the second Big Cohuna Festival on November 2–6. The committee were blown away by the debut festival last year and have packed even more into the five day extravaganza this year. The festival gets underway on Friday night with the St Mary’s Arts Alive art show featuring an exhibition of local talented artists and school children, live music inside and out and a gourmet smorgasbord of street food vendors. The organising committee are expecting the art show to be an extremely popular opening event and a great way to kick off the festivities. Other great events include a yoga/ garden walk/Thermomix day, Shukura Park farm tours and a spring feast luncheon, the Cohuna Consolidated Creekside Fair, CFA open house, fishing competition, natural 10

WHAT'S ON Spring 2018

horsemanship wellness session, forest tours, hospital luncheon and a Grill and Chill night at Waffles in Cohuna. Workshops and demonstrations will be running throughout the duration of the entire event and include photography, art, skateboarding, yoga and horsemanship. The made-local farmers market will be held on Sunday while the extremely popular farmyard frolic will be on Monday. Organiser Jodie Hay said tweaks and adjustments to the program have made this event even better than last year. “Every event we ran last year was fully booked which is phenomenal for a debut festival. Cohuna threw open their doors and everyone really supported the festival and it was so encouraging to see such wonderful support,” Jodie said.

The Farmyard Frolic — where selected farmers opened their gates to the public — was one of the most popular events on the Big Cohuna calendar last year. Windella Farm (goats), 15 acres (eggs), Shukura Park (mixed farming), Elmar (dairy) and The Elm Tree Nursery will again open their doors to the public. “We had such a positive response to the frolic last year that we will have to cap numbers this year,” Jodie said. She said booking details will vary for each event and some will have a small charge attached. Details will be available closer to the event and for more information Facebook the Big Cohuna Festival or visit Gateway Cohuna.

GETTING

STEAMED UP ABOUT GETTING SWEATY

October 21

YOU can run, walk, push a pram, skip or crawl — just as long as you and your sneakers make it to the start line at Hopwood Gardens for the 2018 Sweat Vs Steam fun run on October 21. There is no other run in the world quite like Sweat Vs Steam. Where else do you get to test your running ability and race against a piece of living history — in this case the PS Pevensey — while running along the picturesque trails of Echuca. Last year 500 people participated across the 5 km and 12 km events and Echuca’s Brady Threlfall, scorched across the 12 km course in 43:35 — for his eighth win of the event, while the first female across the line 12

WHAT'S ON Spring 2018

was Marnie Nicholls in 54:29. Archie Reid smashed out the 5 km event in 15:41 while Hendrika Kirchhofer covered the same distance in 21:53 making her the first female across the line. The event raised $12,000 which was distributed across 11 community beneficiaries. Sweat Vs Steam is open to runners of any age and ability and for many participants it is just a fun morning amongst family and friends.

THE Melbourne Cup does stop the nation, but these days the whole day tends to have the same effect. So does another major fixture on the spring racing carnival calendar — Echuca-Moama’s Turkish Bazaar stops the twin towns. The Turkish Bazaar is back after a brief name change to the Echuca-Moama Cup Carnival and will be offering shoppers the same great pre Melbourne Cup shopping experience. Hare St will be closed Monday, November 5 as the Bazaar gets underway 9 am – 2 pm. Not only will it feature many great shopping bargains it will also have some great entertainment. Traders Association spokesman Daniel Mackrell said family fun and street stall

bargains would be the order of the day. “Hare St will be closed to traffic between Pakenham and Anstruther streets to make way for the festivities. Lots of bargains, special on-the-day promos and giveaways from local traders,” Daniel said. Activities include pony and camel rides, ice cream trailers and the L’il Me Market will also be there for the occasion. Echuca-Moama is a vibrant and popular tourist attraction during spring and summer and the cup carnival signifies the unofficial start. “We are looking forward to a great day so come along and grab yourself a bargain,” Daniel added.

FILLIES, FASHIONS AND CUP FUN

ON MELBOURNE CUP DAY November 6 THE Moama Bowling Club Melbourne Cup Day will be held at Echuca racecourse on Tuesday, November 6 — with gates opening from 10.30 am. The seven-race card attracts people by the thousands — 2017 topped 4000 — who enjoy the atmosphere of one of the best country race meets in the state. Featuring a big screen to watch all the racing action around Australia, including the Cup from Flemington, there is no reason not to head down to the course and join in the festivities. And while many come for the racing, fashion is also a huge drawcard. This year more than $8000 is up for grabs in prizes across the categories Lady of the Day, Gent of the Day, Millinery Award, Fashionable Young Person of the Day (12–17) and Junior Girl and Boy Fashion (11 and under). ERC chief executive Leigh Newton said competitors travel from near and far to attend the fashions on the field event, held in the entertainment precinct. “Last year we had more than 130 entries all competing for titles and seriously good

16

WHAT'S ON Spring 2018

prizes. All fashions on the field sponsors are local and are great supporters of the racing club and this event,” Leigh said. A great family day out wouldn’t be complete without live music or entertainment for the littlest racegoers, including giant waterslides, jumping castles, face painting, The Zone activities and a bucking bull. A new initiative this year is the introduction of the Home Straight Syndicated Marquee — a place for patrons to turn up to the races, have a sit down three-course meal along with a beverage package, live music and TAB facilities all located within the marquee. There are other hospitality options available ranging from general entry, umbrella and marquee packages to a

ticket to the glamourous Colts and Fillies Enclosure with live music and plenty of dancing. Echuca Racing Club will also be part of the Melbourne Cup Festival (Echuca Moama Business and Trades Association) on the Monday in the heart of Echuca. All cup day information, tickets, memberships and giveaways will be available. Membership is available for only $85 or $110 for members and guests, which allows you into the members’ enclosure in the pavilion. For more information visit www.countryracing/Echuca or phone 5482 2487.

WHAT'S ON Spring 2018

The Elmore Field Days has been the destination for decades to catch up on the latest and greatest in agriculture — from technology and machinery, through to crop innovation and animal health. And this year’s 55th event will certainly be no different. Held from October 2–4, during the school holidays, the field days make a great family day out, jam packed with much to see and do. More than 700 exhibitors will fill the Elmore Events Centre for three days, showcasing every imaginable thing from steel yards to swimming pools, the latest in tools and tractors and even household goods and plants. There is also plenty of great food to keep nourished and full of energy while you traverse the site. The auditorium is again home to the ever popular Ag Art Wear competition where designers create wearable garments made from materials found on farms or in farm related industries across five sections — avant garde, designer, 18 years and under, novice and a hat section. >>

IT DOESN’T matter how, just as long as you make it over the finish line of the 2018 Billabong Ranch Brumby Run, Sunday, November 3. Featuring more than 30 different obstacles, lots of mud and lots of fun, participants can throw themselves at the 6 km, 8 km or 12 km event — you even have the opportunity to change your distance mid race. Obstacles range in height and difficulty and a few involve mud, whether you are crawling or running through it — but don’t be put off by that, there is always the opportunity to wash it off with a swim in the channel, through some pipes and over a couple of barrels. 22

WHAT'S ON Spring 2018

And awaiting you at the finish line is a straw cowboy hat, medallion, stubby holder, a can of beer or soft drink and a sausage sizzle to replace some of that lost energy. The Brumby Run is a great family or team event and organiser Kerri Aquisto said more than 300 people join in the fun each year. The first wave kicks off at 11 am and the minimum age for entry is 13 (as at November 3). Accommodation is available on site, from doubles through to teams of 12 for $30 per

person but BYO bedding. A bar will be operating all weekend but there is no BYO alcohol. Music and drinks will be provided around the campfire on Saturday night. A $10 parking fee will be charged on the day with all proceeds going toward the Local CFA. For more information visit facebook.com/billabongranchbrumbyrun

SADDLE UP FOR THE GUNNY GOLD CUP

October 6

IF YOU are looking for a day out, at one of the most picturesque race courses in the state, why not head out to Gunbower on October 6 for a great day of racing. Country hospitality reigns supreme at this country meet that is big on entertainment. Featuring the Procal Dairies Gunbower Gold Cup, fashions on the field, kids’ entertainment and a great variety of food and cold drinks — there is something for everyone. A new initiative this year is the introduction of the off-thebench marquee. Hosted by Craig Hutchison, Liam Pickering and Dr Turf,

enjoy the ultimate country racing experience with Pickers’ famous punters club — with great Country Racing Victoria merchandise to be won, the marquee is a great way to spend cup day. It is fantastic value for money at only $120 per person and includes admission, race book, barbecue lunch, beverage package including beer, wine and soft drink,

entertainment, prime location, marquee and a fenced courtyard and umbrella. If you are looking for something a little more personal why not book an umbrella package on the home straight or indulge in you own marquee. One thing Gunbower does well is food and the Gunbower Lions Club will have their barbecue cranking out the sausages, or if you are after

something a little extra, the Anglican Ladies Guild will be providing a delicious twocourse meal in the tin shed. The Gunbower Race Club encourages racegoers to embrace the casual and relaxed environment of a true country race meet wrapped up in country town charm. Located only half an hour west of the twin towns, return buses will run from Echuca.

Safe boating on NSW waterways

When it comes to the Murray River, which borders Victoria and New South Wales, the laws of NSW apply. Wear a lifejacket Lifejackets are the most important piece of safety equipment on any recreational vessel. An approved lifejacket must be carried for each person on board most vessels. It must be the correct size for the wearer, in good condition and worn in a range of situations, for example: • Children under 12 years are required to wear a lifejacket at all times in a vessel under 4.8m, and when in an open area of a vessel less than 8m that is underway

WE A R A LIFEJACK ET

• On vessels less than 4.8m, everyone must wear a lifejacket when boating at night or when boating alone • On canoes and kayaks, everyone must wear a lifejacket at most times, including at night or when boating alone. These are only some examples of the lifejacket wearing requirements on NSW waterways. If using inflatable lifejackets, these must be serviced at least every 12 months or at longer intervals in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. For more information visit rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime.

Alcohol and drug offences

When towing or wake surfing

Breath testing, including random breath testing (RBT), can be conducted on the operator of a vessel while it is underway, including drifting. Permissible concentration of alcohol limits are as follows:

You must have an observer onboard who is responsible for observing the towed people and reporting all matters affecting them to the master, including vessels approaching from behind. The observer must be at least 16 years of age or hold a boat driving licence, must not be under the influence of alcohol or a drug, and should be familiar with the standard hand signals.

0.00 for recreational vessel operators aged under 18 years

Consider the impact of your vessel’s wash on other people and the environment, ensuring your wash does not have a dangerous, damaging or unreasonable impact.

Less than 0.02 for commercial vessel operators over 18 years Less than 0.05 for recreational vessel operators over 18 years The operator of a vessel includes anyone steering or exercising control over its course or direction, and includes the observer in a ski boat or PWC and anyone being towed.

Safety on houseboats When you hire a houseboat you will be advised how many people are legally allowed on the vessel at any one time, whether underway or moored. The maximum number on any houseboat is 12, but this could be less depending on the size of the vessel. If you exceed the maximum number of people you may affect the buoyancy of the vessel and cause it to capsize. Never jump from houseboats. It is an offence and you could hit unseen snags in the water, or slip and hit the edge of the boat.

For more information contact Roads and Maritime Services 13 12 36

IF YOU HAVE TO GET WRECKED, DO IT HERE THE odd tinny may go down on the Murray these days but the coast around Australia is littered with shipwrecks — with more than 11,000 known sites. That’s basically one wreck for every 3 km of coastline. And the full story of this maritime mayhem is on display at Echuca Historical Society’s museum and the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre until October 30. Submerged — Stories of Australia’s Shipwrecks uncovers Australia’s rich shipwreck history as well as featuring paddlesteamer disasters on the Murray and Darling rivers. And many of them were built in and/or regularly passed through Echuca-Moama. EHS president Dot Hammond said Submerged

32

was being presented by the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Australian Maritime Museums Council. Dot said it was the result of a national project with workshops held across the country to develop the exhibition and to source shipwreck stories. She said in the end 68 shipwreck stories were nominated by 46 maritime museums and heritage institutions around Australia; with 14 of the most compelling stories selected for the exhibition. “PS Wagga Wagga was the last operational paddle steamer

WHAT'S ON Spring 2018

on the Murrumbidgee River,” Dot added. “It had spent 40 years plying the treacherous waters between Hay and Wagga Wagga before it hit a snag and foundered at Narrandera in 1913,” she said. “The screw-driven steamer Wollongbar II was carrying cargo when it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine and sank at Crescent Head near Port Macquarie in 1943.” And if you don’t think the naval war came to Australia between 1939 and 1945 the

City of Rayville is said to be the first American ship sunk during World War II. It was carrying a cargo of lead from Port Pirie in South Australia to New York in 1940 when it struck a sea-mine off Cape Otway and went straight to the bottom. Fortunately all but one of its 38 crew members escaped It will be on show here until October 30 every day between 11 am and 3 pm. For more details phone EHS on 5480 1325.

THE beautiful wine region that is Echuca-Moama will be on show when the Pop and Pour festival returns to the twin towns Saturday, November 24. And with additional venues added to the program, there is set to be double the wine, double the music and definitely double the fun. St Anne’s winery and Three Black Sheep have returned for 2018 and will be joined by Pride of Pop and Pour PS (Pride of the Murray), Pop and Pour Pop Up Bush Dance, Perricoota Vines Resort and the Woolshed. Each destination will have live music with food and beverages available for purchase including beer, cider and

cocktails while a courtesy bus will shuttle patrons between venues. Patrons will be picked up from the American Hotel and Border Inn between 11.45 am and 12.45 pm on Saturday morning and dropped at their venue of choice. Buses will circulate regularly between destinations and from 5 pm onwards, the route will include a return to the American or the Border Inn. The last bus will leave at 6 pm. Organiser Jackie Wegener said she was blown away by the success of the Pop and Pour in 2017. “I still can’t believe we sold out in our first year. The buzz from our inaugural event was electric and it was such a fun and vibrant day. “People start to talk each other on the buses between venues and those new friendships follow on around the trail all day long and by the end, you end up as one large group of friends,” Jackie said. The festival finishes with an after party at the American Hotel from 6 pm – 8 pm in the carpark (wristband is required for entry). General admission tickets are $55 and

include a wine glass, access to the shuttle service, live entertainment and access to the after party at The American. VIP tickets are $75 (strictly limited to 100) and include a general admission inclusion plus a Spanish inspired sit-down single course lunch with sangria served from 1 pm at the Woolshed, exclusive entry to the St Annes cheese and wine hour from hour from 3–4 pm and access to a reserved VIP seating area at Three Black Sheep, The Woolshed and Perricoota Vines Resort. Platinum tickets are $200 (strictly limited to 50 tickets) and include general admission inclusions, a pre pop and pour cruise departing at 11 am, a private twocourse luncheon at Morrison’s Winery including wine, beer and cider, exclusive entry into the St Anne’s Wine and Cheese hour, access to a reserved VIP seating area at Three Black Sheep, The Woolshed and Perricoota Vines Resort and a Three Black Sheep picnic rug and tote bag. MAGICAL MADAGASCAR HITS THE LOCAL STAGE November 9–17 ECHUCA-MOAMA Theatre Company is expected to get audience members jumping out of their seats to ‘move it, move it’, when their junior production of Madagascar hits the stage in November. With the cast selected and rehearsals in place, director Darcy Elliott said he was excited and looking forward to bringing the show to the public. This is Darcy’s directorial debut, with the 25-year-old helped out with EMTC’s last two junior shows — Elf Jnr and The Little Mermaid Jnr. “The main thing about Madagascar is to make it the most fun, exciting and energetic experience for the kids and the audience,” he said. Madagascar the Musical Jnr is based on the movie and follows the adventures of Alex the lion, Marty the zebra,

Melman the giraffe, Gloria the hippo and the hilarious, plotting penguins. They escape from their home in New York’s Central Park Zoo and find themselves on an unexpected journey to the madcap world of King Julien’s Madagascar. “The show has a lot of humour and great one-liners,” Darcy said. “The music is fun and not overly technical and will make people get up and bop. Madagascar the Musical Jnr will be held at the Paramount from November 9–17.

PASSING THE October 6–7 FUNDRAISING BATON FOR 15 years the community of Echuca-Moama has been actively supporting Relay For Life — a moving and emotional event to help those in the community touched by cancer. It offers a chance to recognise and celebrate those who have fought a battle with cancer, those undergoing treatment or it also provides an opportunity to celebrate the memory of loved ones lost. All the while raising vital funds for Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services. Anyone can participate in Relay for Life. Held at the Moama Recreation Reserve, the walk kicks off from 4 pm Saturday and finishes 9 am Sunday morning. Entertainment will run throughout the weekend to help keep participants motivated as they walk their way through the night and into the morning.

Last year Family Ties was crowned the top fundraisers raising $11,165.70 followed by Happy Hour $9094.35 and Spudheads with $6905. The event has managed to raise a staggering $1.1 million since it began. Echuca resident Daniel Bell will this year be walking in honour of his father Mark. His father passed away in 2014 from a lesion that was left untreated on his abdomen. “He tried to treat it himself with paw paw ointment and other creams and lotions but did not seek medical attention. “His death would have been most likely been preventable if he had been seen by a

doctor when he first knew of his problem,” Daniel said. “It is often thought by many people that if you ignore something then it will be fine and go away — we urge you to please seek help and be proactive,” he said.

WHEN EVERYT EVERYONE GOE THERE is nothing like the good old fashioned fun of a country show and Echuca-Moama’s is one of the best. Why not grab some friends or family and head down to the Echuca Showgrounds on November 10 and 11 for all the country hospitality the show has to offer. The schedule is jam packed. As always visitors can take a walk down side show alley to get their heart pumping or perhaps a more leisurely wander around the Holmfield pavilion might be more to your liking. The pavilion is home to local craft, cooking and creativity along with featured art work by many of the talented school children. Horses and cattle will be shown across two days providing some great animal action in the ring, along with some spectacular poultry making an appearance as well. Champion Australian chainsaw carver Rob Blast will be showing the crowd his talent over two days and the local army cadets will be hosting a display. 42

WHAT'S ON Spring 2018

There will be plenty of free activities for the kids including an animal nursery, pony rides, horse and carriage rides, mini golf and face painting. Utes in all their glory will be on show on Saturday, followed by a show ‘n’ shine on Sunday. For those with a competitive streak there is the opportunity to shove as many doughnuts in your mouth as possible for the doughnut eating competition, or can you can enter the more sedate paper plane competition. Trade stalls and displays will operate over the weekend. The highlight of the show is always the huge fireworks display which will be held on Saturday night — the pops of colour will certainly light up the night and dazzle the sky. Gates open 9 am Saturday and Sunday. Cost of entry is $10 for adults, $5 under 16 and children under 5 are free. Don’t forget the popular $30 family pass which entitles you to entry across the weekend.

WHEN EVERY BREATH COUNTS – EVERY DAY September 8

IF YOU are looking for a great night out and a great cause to support in finding a cure for Cystic Fibrosis, why not grab yourself a ticket and head to the Breathe Easy Cocktail Party on Saturday, September 8. The party will be held at Radcliffe’s from 7 pm – 11.30 pm. General admission tickets are $115 per person and include music by Square 1 Entertainment, finger food, drinks, prizes and a silent auction. Premium tickets are $135 and include general admission plus a paddlesteamer cruise aboard the Pride of the Murray, leaving the Port of Echuca Wharf at 6 pm — drinks and canapes provided.

The party was established by Echuca resident Shari Butcher back in 2015 as a platform to raise awareness and funds for CF research — the most common life threatening genetic condition in Australia. Shari lives with the condition and there is still no cure. The Breathe Easy Cocktail Party raises much needed funds for research and 100 per cent of the proceeds go to the Alfred Foundation, Royal Children’s Cystic

Fibrosis Research Trust and Cystic Fibrosis Community Care. Shari is urging the community to jump on board and support the cause. “Since its inception, Breathe Easy has held various functions including cocktail

MUSIC WASHES AWAY FROM THE SOUL THE DUST OF EVERYDAY LIFE SOUNDS for the Soul is a series of concerts held at the Echuca-Moama Uniting Church from now through to December. Featuring relaxing, uplifting and joyous music, Sounds for the Soul has been running for three years. Organiser Anne Peace said the acoustics of the church made it the perfect place to hold such an event. “It is so pleasing to hear our guests extol the virtues of our sanctuary as a performance space,” Anne said. “The intimate space holds and audience of 180, the central location and accessibility for all ensure many performers ask to return to play again,” she said. Performers over the years have included the St Pauls Lutheran African Choir from Shepparton, Crescendo Spring Quartet from the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and the Maryborough Jazz Band Gospel Sounds.

The cost is $15 per concert (pay at the door) or $40 per person for a series ticket. Series tickets are available by phoning 0429 801 342. Proceeds will aid Outreach and Mission in our community. Kingfisher Wetland Cruises allows people to see the ecology and history of the forest, with some trees estimated to be more than 300 years old and more than 40 m high, the birdlife and its habitats and the Aboriginal significance of the area.

BOOM, BOOM BABY Echuca Regional Health midwife Holly Simonsen holds newborns Arlo Carnie (left) and Xavier Wall – just two of the tiny tot tsunami. Photo: Luke Hemer

By Ivy Jensen RECORDS have been smashed at Echuca hospital, with 413 babies born in the past 12 months. That’s more than one a day and 86 more than the same time the previous year. Midwives have been run off their feet as they cope with the increased demand which, according to maternity ward nurse unit manager Amanda Murphy, is unprecedented.

“We’ve never had that many babies in my time and I’ve been here since May 1984,’’ she said. “It’s usually always around the 300 mark.’’ Mrs Murphy said she believed the increase was due to parents choosing to have their babies at the new Echuca hospital. “It’s a great hospital with much nicer facilities,” she said. Mrs Murphy said the most number of babies in the hospital at one time was about 12, when four women birthed at once.

“We have three birthing rooms so we had to use the antenatal room,” she said. “All our eight rooms were lled and we had to use the beds in the surgical ward.” To cope with that demand, Mrs Murphy said there was a bank of midwives who were called on to pick up extra shifts. “We have 26 midwives at the moment, most of whom are part-time,” she said. “We all come together when we’re busy. The team works well and supports each other.

“We also have two midwives in training. “We are also very successful in recruiting midwives as well as ongoing training of our own.” A new paediatrician has also recently started at the hospital. “We enjoy being busy at the maternity unit and our midwives love babies and their role,” Mrs Murphy said. “We would like it to grow a little bit bigger but hopefully this boom is sustained.”

ROCHESTER has some serious community spirit. And in the past seven or eight years it has been put to the test more than desired — or expected. First it was the 2011 floods, which devastated businesses and homes. Rochester banded together and fought back. Next it was the closure in 2017 of the Murray Goulburn plant smack bang in the middle of town. Leaving more than 100 hard-working men and women out of work. It looked dire. But Rochester once again banded together and fought back. Rochester’s community has come together once again during recent months — but this time it was for something that will have a long-lasting, and positive, effect on the town. The Rochester silos artwork is complete. And it is something you have to see to believe. Project media manager Kate Taylor said the impact they have already had on the community is enormous. “They are just incredible and they are already bringing people to Rochy,” she said. “We have been through it all — floods, bushfires, closure of MG — but we decided to do this as a community for our community.

“This is Rochy’s doing and it wouldn’t be possible without GrainCorp. “They have been amazing through the whole process and they are a part of something pretty special.” Ms Taylor said Rochy was now on the map. “People are coming here to see our silos, not to stop on their way to somewhere else,” she said. “And it isn’t just tourists having a look, the number of locals you see down there is great and they are all just proud to be able to say to their friends and people they meet that they live in Rochy, where the amazing silos are. “There are only a few silo paintings in the whole country and we got one.” Artist Jimmy Dvate took just under five weeks to complete the two silos with two native animals centre stage. Both the azure kingfisher and squirrel glider are native to the region and are now the first thing you see when you drive in to Rochester when going south. “Jimmy has been amazing and really made sure every visitor and community member felt a part of the whole process,” Ms Taylor said. “This is our pride and joy and Rochy is now on everyone’s map.”

IT’S ONLY A BRISK 404 KM – GIVE OR TAKE A BEND OR TWO November 19–23 IT IS 404 km from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill via the Murray River. And for the past 50 years people have jumped at the opportunity of planting their posteriors in a canoe or a kayak, warm up their arms and take five days to paddle the length of the Murray as part of the Massive Murray Paddle. Wide beaches, stunning scenery and tall trees are just parts of the scenery that contribute to this unique event, the physical and mental challenge is another. The paddle is open to serious or recreational paddlers, individual or in teams. Categories include school team relays, the K4 challenge or the DIY challenge and distances can include 50 km, 100 km, 200 km or the full distance and five days of 404 km. Formerly known as the Red Cross Murray River Marathon, the paddle has always raised money for charity, last year totalling an astounding $181,829. Participants take pride in the event, quirky names, uniforms and logos are all an essential part of the fun. Organiser of Team Dungulayin Mileka, Tony Lovett, said the paddle provides an opportunity for people to overcome challenges, whilst forming lifelong bonds. “There is a cultural connection between the river, the people and the land.” For more information visit massivemurraypaddle.org.au
