CELEBRATING 60 YEARS
Sixty years of steady growth Trevaskis Engineering has gone from humble beginnings in a farm shed to a multi-faceted organisation throughout its 60-year history. Richie Trevaskis and his father began operations out of a workshop on the farm, with the pair carrying out simple metal fabrication and repairs. Once demand increased the two moved into a larger, more practical working environment on Ross St, Tatura, in 1962. As the company steadily progressed, the need for an official place of business was recognised. The company relocated in 1975 to the building that Trevaskis Engineering now operates out of in Edgar St, which has served its purpose throughout the growth of the company. However, with staff numbers continuing to grow it was acknowledged that more space was required, and in 1998 a foyer
extension was built at the front of the building with an extra story on top. This development was an investment in the future of the business. “The purchase of the laser brought about new business for the company, which in turn led to more employees,” general manager Michael Mason said. “There wasn’t enough room for everybody, we had a portable unit outside to house everyone and we knew we had to do something about it. “That made a big difference because it created enough office space, it gave the business a more professional look, which in turn allowed us to get some higherskilled staff.”

Opened a workshop in Ross Street, Tatura in 1962.
Forging a successful business With a half-ton of steel and an iron will to succeed, Richie Trevaskis transformed his farm shed into the multifaceted enterprise the business is today. From a young age Richie always took an interest in working with his hands, which built the grounds Trevaskis Engineering now stands on. Sacrificing his family needs for his own education, Richie left Shepparton High School in 1947 and began working on his family farm in Tatura. Six years later he married Joyce Bunn, with the couple working and managing the farm for the next decade. Richie possessed a keen eye for detail and, partnered with his trademark entrepreneurial nature, a recipe for success was created.
After teaching himself how to weld, Richie went on to build a leanto and two steel haysheds. Once Richie had built his own press, he then began to manufacture feeding troughs for pigs — and from there Trevaskis Engineering was born in 1959. After he had established a name for himself in the metal works industry locally, Richie moved into a small workshop three years after the farm was sold. As business boomed Richie realised he couldn’t do it all by himself and hired a staff member who he had taught

how to weld. He then bought more equipment enabling him to increase operations and yet again Trevaskis Engineering expanded. The fact that Trevaskis Engineering still stands tall and continues to excel in its field is proof that Richie’s values are heavily instilled throughout every facet of the business. His work ethic has been translated into each and every aspect of Trevaskis Engineering, and to this day the company carries his mantra into every product and project that it undertakes.

Cutting edge performance The acquisition of the company’s first laser cutting device in the late 1990s brought about an entirely new customer base for Trevaskis Engineering. Rapidly reducing time spent on designing and cutting metal, the machine uses electricity and gas to create a laser beam which is then focused on the steel. The laser then cuts out shapes that are mapped out using computer aided design (CAD). General manager Michael Mason recalls it as a significant turning point in the Trevaskis timeline and has helped the business prosper. “It transformed the business and we grew very quickly, going from about 15 staff at the time up to a peak of about 50 staff by 2010,”
Michael said. “The laser cutter brought a lot of new customers to us, so that was probably the biggest single change made.” The recent addition of a new laser in September has allowed for more accuracy and efficiency throughout business operations. “It uses newer technology, it fires the beam through a fibre optic cable rather than bouncing off mirrors like the old one does. It delivers a much finer cut and is a lot quicker,” Michael said.
Pressing their advantage
State-of-the-art technology
One of the instrumental pieces of equipment at Trevaskis Engineering is the brake press machine. Clamps hold the sheet metal in place and the machine uses a blade and die to bend it into the desired shape. The company has been using it as a core component in the sheet metal manufacturing process and it helps the company create a large part of the products that Trevaskis Engineering has made a name for itself in. Sheet metal supervisor Damien Bell recognises its importance, and says it certainly contributes to putting the business on the map. “It is a pretty advanced piece of machinery, especially around country Victoria,” Damien said. “The sheet metal manufacturing process starts with the engineers,
then it goes to the laser. “After that, it goes to the press where the metal gets folded into shape and then moved on to the welding shed.” Although the original brake press has been with the business for a number of years, the company invested in a newer press roughly three years ago. “It gave us more flexibility; it is a bit smaller, but it runs a lot faster,” Damien said. The new press allows Trevaskis Engineering to undertake a wider variety of projects and is one of the decisions that backs up the company’s goal to continue evolving within the industry.

With little room for error in such a large-scale operation, Trevaskis engineers use a computer aided design (CAD) system to draft three-dimensional models of the products before going to production. The CAD software is used to increase the productivity of the designer and improve the quality of design, significantly reducing risk and cutting costs immensely. The opportunity to test the product before it gets manufactured helps pick out any design flaws and ultimately results in a superior end product. “We started using computer aided design in the late 1980s, and the 3D component arose in the late 1990s,” general manager Michael Mason said. “It really has been an integral part of the business, as well as using other state-of-the-art technology such
as the laser cutting device and the turret punching facilities.”
The CAD software helps eliminate risk during the design process.

Keeping one step ahead Staying ahead of the competition and exploring new markets for business is the key to success in any industry, and it is no different at Trevaskis Engineering. While general manager Michael Mason has taken Trevaskis Engineering down plenty of avenues already, he aims to continue exploring different paths for the business to expand. “We are always looking for new industries that we can delve into, such as solar for example,” Michael said. “Electrical switchboards are something that we have really expanded our customer base in over the last few years. “We got certification on our switchboards which opened up the market for us and that is where one of our Melbourne customers is based. “Realistically we hope to break into any industry that has a need for sheet metal manufacturing.”
In terms of the future, Michael hopes to continue to lead Trevaskis Engineering to prominence within the fabrication industry and hopes to see the business prosper. “Down the track we would like to still be playing a major role in the area; we hope to be servicing existing customers as well as new customers,” he said. “We will need to evolve with the industry and hope to continue to keep up with the latest technology.”

Striving to be the best The motto at Trevaskis Engineering is ‘Manufacturing engineers that deliver’, which translates to striving to offer a quality product as well as quality customer service. From humble beginnings, Trevaskis Engineering has built its foundations from the ground up and prides itself on doing the same within its workforce. As general manager, Michael Mason ensures all employees are properly trained and aims to upskill his team to further the success of
the business. “A lot of our staff are promoted internally, that is something that we pride ourselves on,” Michael said. “We are able to promote some tradesmen off the floor into the engineering department and teach them how to use computer aided design; three of the engineers
that are around today have been promoted off the floor.” For employees of Trevaskis Engineering, this serves as motivation to get the best out of themselves in order to reach the most substantial outcome for themselves and the business. Fabricator Gary Stewart
recognises the effort Trevaskis Engineering makes to provide staff members with the skills necessary to carry out their work to the best possible standard. “You get help here — training methods, encouragement; it keeps you going,” Gary said. “It is excellent.”
Staying ahead of the competition For any company to exist for 60 years is a mammoth achievement, especially when you consider the competitive nature of local businesses in the fabrication industry. The survival of local businesses can be difficult, especially in the often-turbulent nature of regional economies. After working in the city for the majority of his life, fabricator Gary Stewart is amazed at the success and longevity of Trevaskis Engineering after being a part of the
team for a little under a year. “For a company this size to be in business 60 years, let alone in regional Victoria, is a hell of a thing,” Gary said. “That’s because of the changes they implement and the day-to-day running of the place.” While there is a large focus on structural engineering, general
manager Michael Mason says where Trevaskis Engineering sets itself apart is in sheet metal processing. “We specialise more in the sheet metal processing area rather than structural, although we do that as well,” Michael said. “The state-of-the-art technology and equipment, the laser cutting,
turret punching and brake presses allow us to stay ahead. “Keeping up with technology is a big part of what sets us apart from other competitors, it is the sheet metal processing that is a bit different. “If you don’t have the equipment it makes it quite difficult.”

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS
Upholding key business values
Owner Trevor Downie joined Trevaskis Engineering in 1978.
Born in Kyabram, spending his childhood days in Merrigum and finally settling in Tatura, the Goulburn Valley has always been home for Trevor Downie. Drinking soldering fluid at 18 months old was probably the first indicator that Trevor would be curious and into everything. He completed primary school at Kyabram and Merrigum, with Shepparton South Technical School providing secondary education through Trevor’s teenage years. A passion for drafting and design, together with some career guidance, saw Trevor pursue mechanical engineering as a vocation. Completing a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at Bendigo College of Advanced Education, his award as dux of the Engineering Faculty was highly valued. Pursuing design as his preference, Trevor spent 12 months with a conveyor manufacturer in Thomastown. He says the job was fantastic, but city life was too hectic and not for him.
Dianne Trevaskis had become an important part of Trevor’s life, and Dianne’s father, Richie Trevaskis, offered Trevor a job at Trevaskis Engineering in Tatura in 1978. In the early days the company had a staff of six in total, and Trevor spent many years learning the business from the ground up. Everyone shared the tasks and the demands. Welding, pressing, painting and metal working dominated Trevor’s first eight years, with some management tasks gradually introduced. One of the puzzles for Trevaskis Engineering was to establish what constituted the ideal business size. With Richie and Trevor jointly managing the business, Trevaskis Engineering grew from six staff to more than 50, and currently sits at about 35. They both conceded that the ‘ideal size’ is a mystery.
Trevor and Dianne purchased the business in 2004, with Richie retiring from the day-to-day operation. Two key business values developed over time. Trevor believed that a successful business needed to inspire and motivate staff members, convinced a business that could not inspire its staff would hardly inspire its customers. Secondly, Trevaskis Engineering needed a point of difference, and a reputation for delivering quality product on time was earned over many years. By using the latest technologies, Trevaskis Engineering enjoys a unique position of supplying many other local engineering companies with components. With many highs and not too many lows, Trevor said he had thoroughly enjoyed the journey to retirement. Purchasing the first laser cutting machine (one of the first in
rural Victoria) in the late 1990s still remains high on the list of achievements, and having that laser unveiled by the Minister for Business Development in front of a huge crowd was a thrill for Trevor. On a personal level, Trevor says his four children and five grandchildren bring him the greatest joy. Life membership of the Tatura Cricket Club and being named City of Greater Shepparton Citizen of the Year in 2005 are highly regarded by Trevor and his family.
Leading from the front At the forefront of Trevaskis Engineering is general manager Michael Mason, whose priority is to oversee all operations within the company’s different departments and set strategic directions for the business.
Trevaskis Engineering general manager Michael Mason.
A stalwart in the business for 27 years, Michael has worked his way through the different departments at the company, displaying leadership qualities throughout his various roles. “I started out as a boiler maker, then worked my way up to be a supervisor,” Michael said. “After that I made the transition into the welding department, and then worked as the production manager for a while. “Once I had shifted into purchasing, I went back to school to study parttime, so I could upskill.”
Steering the ship at Trevaskis Engineering, Michael relishes in seeing the productivity of his staff accompanied by camaraderie throughout the various divisions in the business. “It is great to work with a fantastic bunch of employees; I love to see the employees getting a kick out of their job,” he said. “I think if you don’t enjoy your work you should be somewhere else. We all get our work done and have a bit of fun along the way.” Being one of the longest serving
members at Trevaskis Engineering, Michael has witnessed the growth of the company from within and recognises the contributions of its staff. He credits the synergy among the personnel for their dedication to the business. “We have had a large part of the staff body working here for over 10 years, some even 20 or more years with Trevaskis,” he said. “I think it is all because the workers all have a healthy respect for each other and they all enjoy each other’s company.”
Going from strength to strength As one of the longest serving members at Trevaskis Engineering, draftsman Tim Parker is one of the cogs that drives the business forward. Originally working in farm maintenance for Bonlac, Tim made the switch to Trevaskis once it took over the feed systems company and has relished the working environment ever since. “We have been able to generate new products because of the technology we have, whereas there was a lot of manual work at Bonlac,” Tim said. “My main role is drafting, whether it be feed systems or customer components, and I also do a little bit of computer maintenance.” When Tim was an employee at
Bonlac, he was still heavily involved with the company he now works for. “Back then we dealt with Trevaskis, they built all the feeders and we did all the assembly and installation and servicing of them,” Tim said. “Technically I have been working with Trevaskis for 40 years now.” Tim has witnessed the progression of the company from within, and as industry standards have improved so the market opportunities have opened up for Feedtech. “There were very few systems available when we first started, they
were mostly imported so we said we will make our own,” he said. “We (Bonlac) went to Trevaskis and they designed a unit and we have just gone from strength to strength from there.” And for Tim, the most gratifying part of his job is seeing the fruits of his labour produced right in front of him. “I love the job, I enjoy creating new products, it’s a stressful job but it is very rewarding. “You can go and see your product get finished as it goes out the door.”
Draftsman Tim Parker.

Kate Gow, quoting and customer service.
How Trevaskis Engineering deals with customers and builds relationships with locals has been imperative to its longevity, and one of the influential members of the team who is responsible for this is Kate Gow. Working in the quoting and customer service department, Kate’s versatility is what makes her a valuable asset to the company and it is also the reason why she loves her job. “I deal with customers, quote the jobs that come through, enter all the sales orders, answer the phones and do general admin,” Kate said. “There is not one day that is the same; there is a lot of diversity which is good, and you get to form relationships with your customers.” Having been a part of the Trevaskis Engineering family for 16 years, Kate has worked her way through various roles in the business and is thankful for the support provided by her employers. “The best part of the job has to be the people,” she said. “And also, they are very family friendly; I have got two small children
at school so if I need to take the kids to school they are very flexible, which makes life easier. “The work/life balance is very important, and it is important to Trevaskis as well.” Kate is appreciative of the prioritisation of internal upgrades within the various sections at Trevaskis Engineering that allows the business to operate at peak performance. “The new computer system has made our lives a lot easier,” she said. “Before the system was implemented it was all manual, but it has just streamlined everything, and I’ve found that our pricing is more in-line which the customers are finding pretty good. “We are also doing much bigger projects now because we have the machinery and the manpower to do so.”

A great place to work Having worked in the metal industry his entire life, Gary Stewart believes Trevaskis Engineering has some of the best in the business at what they do. Gary made the switch from Melbourne to the country five years ago and has now been a part of the Trevaskis team for eight months working as a fabricator. “I’ve been in the trade 40 years, they have some guys out here who are the best I’ve ever seen, honestly,” Gary said. “I just shake my head sometimes when I see what they are doing, it is mind-blowing. “It just spurs you on to try and lift your own standard.” After falling into the job at Trevaskis Engineering, Gary has been impressed with how everyday operations are conducted to such high standards, which elevates the performance of everyone in the workforce.
The company’s attention to detail is a testament to its prosperity and is one of the reasons why it has been able to grow into a well-recognised business throughout regional Victoria. “It’s an excellent company to work for, really team orientated, and everyone is really conscientious about their work and that raises the standards,” Gary said. “The health and safety measures here are great, it’s very unlikely that anyone gets injured. “As soon as there is the slightest chance that someone could get hurt it is knocked on the head straight away. “Trevaskis has probably one of the lowest injury rates for a company that I’ve worked in.”

CELEBRATING 60 YEARS
Committed to quality The acquisition of Bonlac feed systems 24 years ago was a major milestone in Trevaskis Engineering’s 60-year history. Richie Trevaskis and his father originally started the business in the farming industry, and the company has remained close to its roots. Trevaskis Engineering took over the farm supply company in 1995, rebranding it as Feedtech Feeding Systems, which has been instrumental for the company as a whole, according to general manager Michael Mason. “In the mid-90s we bought Bonlac, who were our biggest customers at the time, and rebranded it Feedtech,” Michael said. “That meant we had an increase in staff, and it also gave us access to a dealer network right around the country.” Manufacturing a full range of feeding systems including augers, grain handling processing units and hoppers, Feedtech has established a name for itself in the surrounding
rural areas and is now one of the fundamental cornerstones of Trevaskis Engineering. “Feedtech has been around 25 per cent of the business’ turnover over the years, but we have got an aim to increase that,” Michael said. “Just recently we have diversified into the sheep industry and we are making feedlot systems for sheep, which has just taken off. “Due to the drought there isn’t any food on the ground, so the farmers are having to feed the sheep manually and this does it automatically. “It is basically taking some of the technology we have been using in the dairy industry for 25 years and implementing it into the sheep industry.” Exploiting this new area of sales has allowed Feedtech to deal with customers one-on-one as well as
utilising the dealer network already in place, which has allowed the business to flourish. Feedtech manager Dave Collier has valued the importance of branching out of the dairy industry, and has full confidence in Feedtech going forward. “We are always trying to diversify the business having traditionally been a dairy operation, and that is what we are doing introducing the sheep feeding systems,” Dave said. Supervisor of the Feedtech brand Rick Harris is grateful for the support provided by Trevaskis Engineering and acknowledges its commitment to delivering a quality product. “All the equipment that we sell is made in-house,” Rick said. “We have just been flat out since delving into the sheep market, and I think that it speaks volumes about the product itself.”
