A celebration of education This is the 75th year of Education Week, an event that pro!les and celebrates the strengths and achievements of Victoria’s education sector.

From May 19 to 25, schools and other learning institutions will open their doors to showcase programs and facilities to their local communities.

This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating Careers’ and will focus on the innovative and outstanding work schools do in preparing students to follow their passions and pursue exciting career pathways.

The week aims to shine a spotlight on careers and the many pathways students can take to find the job they want, and to help students see the wide range of careers that are available now, and may be available in the future.

Education minister’s message As a young boy, I’d never imagined a career in politics.

Like many young people, I had no idea about what I wanted to be when I grew up. I was, however, always curious about what people did for work.

I first developed an interest in civics when I studied political science as part of my Arts degree at the University of Melbourne.

My pathway to a career in politics began as a councillor on the Yarra Ranges Council. I enjoyed representing residents and being part of community life. It gave me a taste for public office, and in November 2002, I was first elected to parliament as the Member for Monbulk.

I have been fortunate to work in various portfolios and meet people from all walks of life. As Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs I was able to immerse myself in a great interest of mine — sport. And today, as deputy premier and Minister for Education I have the opportunity to indulge another great passion — education.

It’s a privilege to work in education, because it really is the key to preparing our young people for the future.

I am lucky to have a dream job that inspires and challenges me, and I encourage all young people to follow their dreams too. Everyone deserves to have a career that connects with their own passions, interests, lifestyle and values.

That’s why I am so pleased this year’s theme for Education Week celebrates careers and pathways.

The ‘Education State’ is about giving every child the best chance to succeed in learning and in life.

Careers education is a vital part of this ambition.

It helps young people to make that connection between their interests and their ambitions so they can see a brighter future, and find the right path to get there.

We know that with the right support, every child has the ability to thrive. That’s why we’ve overhauled careers education in schools. It’s also why we have invested heavily in skills and training, reforming the TAFE sector, providing free TAFE courses and strengthening pathways to higher education.

During Education Week — from May 19 to 25 — I encourage every student, parent, teacher and educator to take part in the variety of events and activities being held across the state.

Many schools, TAFEs and early childhood services will open their doors to the community and showcase the amazing work they do. I encourage everyone to celebrate and support Education Week 2019.

Business as usual for busy students Grahamvale Primary School students experience a busy program throughout the year, and this will continue with several regular events scheduled during Education Week.

A house lunch is planned, where students are encouraged to dress in their house colours and sing their house songs, and at the same time reinforce a very important message.

Principal Simone Higgins said the school promoted rubbish-free lunches and after the house events, rubbish was weighed to determine which house had the least amount of throw-away packaging.

Following lunch, two year levels will join the Bluearth leadership group for an afternoon of co-operative games that foster collaboration and teamwork, build leadership and enhance the school value of ‘community’.

Also planned for the week is one of two

special student lunches held each term, where Ms Higgins hosts 22 students, nominated by their teachers or peers, who enjoy a lunch of pizza and salad.

“They may be nominated for working hard, displaying the school values or being a good friend,” Ms Higgins said.

“The students love it, and I write a letter home to their parents about why they were nominated.”

Prospective families can hear first-hand about the school’s programs and see the facilities at an evening information session and three tours, conducted on two days during the week.

School captains make a short presentation, allowing families to hear directly from the students about the education and sense of community offered at Grahamvale.

The information session will be held at 6.30 pm on Monday, May 20 and the school tours on Tuesday, May 21 at 12.15 pm and Thursday, May 23 at 10 am and 5.30 pm.

Celebrating careers in concert St Georges Rd Primary School will continue its annual tradition by celebrating Education Week through its performing arts program.

This year’s theme ‘Celebrating Careers’ aims to raise awareness of career education and shine a spotlight on careers and the many pathways students can take to get the job they want.

Performing arts co-ordinator Anita Voumard said the annual concert provided opportunities for the students to learn through making and responding as both artist and audience.

“The students started workshops this term — ready to perform in week five,” Mrs Voumard said.

“Each session started with a group discussion about careers with the students

talking to each other about what they might want to do as a career when they are older.

“It was great to hear the students verbalise their intentions with a variety of career choices such as police officers, marine biologist, teachers, doctors, artists and construction workers to name a few.

“There were only a couple of students who did not have any idea so discussions led to students identifying their own interests.”

These discussions considered if students liked working indoors or outdoors, with people or animals, did they like organisation and structure, value social connections and want to help people, are they artistic and like to be creative, do they like working with their hands and making or fixing things, would they like to start

and finish projects and did they want to be a leader?

“Student voice is a focus of the project.

All students are encouraged to contribute to the performance by exploring ideas to communicate a message through music, dance and drama,” Mrs Voumard said.

“Grades collaborate with one another and plan their own choreography, costumes, props and background images to be projected on the large screen as their backdrop.

“The process of planning, rehearsing and performing to the whole school and wider community promotes social development through collaboration and personal growth in self-confidence.

“Students develop skills in creative thinking, visualising, communicating intentions, improvising, receiving

The songs chosen will entertain the audience while promoting career pathways in health science, construction, agriculture, food and natural resources, the defence force, audio and visual communication, sport and recreation, information technology, education and training, manufacturing, transportation, human services, business and finance, hospitality and tourism and STEM — science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

St Georges Rd Primary School’s concert will be held on Friday, May 24 at 2 pm in the school hall. A gold coin entry will be donated to charity and everyone is welcome.

School welcomes special guests An Education Week open afternoon for parents, grandparents and special friends is a highlight of the calendar for Orrvale Primary School students.

It’s the day when students can show their important guests around their school and classrooms, and families can gain a greater insight into the learning that goes on there.

School principal Adam Brennan said this year’s Education Week would allow the school to showcase exciting new projects, such as the STEAM specialist building, which is nearing completion, and the continued improvements to the outside space.

“Special visitors spend time with children in the classroom, they get involved in activities and see what teaching and learning looks like in 2019,” Mr Brennan said.

“Visitors can experience a modern classroom; the students love it, they’re very proud to show their work and what they’ve been learning about.”

Also during Education Week, the school will conduct two tours for families of prospective students on Friday, May 24.

The 30-minute tours have been scheduled to run from 8 am to 8.30 am and 1 pm to 1.30 pm to allow as many families as possible to attend.

Open day will showcase programs Shepparton East Primary School will throw open its doors and welcome prospective families and interested community members to learn about its many exciting programs during Education Week.

Assistant principal Stacey Willaton said science and technology was in focus at Shepparton East this year and visitors would be able to see this implemented in a classroom setting during the open day.

There are also big plans for the outdoor spaces, including frog ponds, chook pens and an environmental sensory play area that will incorporate elements of nature.

Ms Willaton said the school had embraced the Education Week theme for 2019 of ‘Celebrating Careers’ and would encourage students to come dressed in outfits reflecting careers they want to pursue when they grow up.

In the lead-up to the dress-up day, classroom teachers will structure learning to incorporate the topic of potential careers, Ms Willaton said.

Open day tours are scheduled for 9.30am and 1pm on Monday, May 20.

“Some of our students visited a supermarket and had a tour of the bakery and butchery departments. They also went to a pizza shop and saw how pizzas were made,” Mr D’Arma said.

Personnel from different professions, including police and ambulance officers, have also visited the school to talk about their jobs and roles within the community.

Mr D’Arma said it was important to offer students opportunities to learn about different career paths and learn how their education could support their plans for the future.

ARDMONA PRIMARY SCHOOL

Activities embrace careers theme Ardmona Primary School has taken a novel approach to Education Week by planning a program of activities that are related to the curriculum and incorporate the week’s theme, ‘Celebrating Careers’.

Students will be encouraged to write about their plans for the future in their story writing sessions, while the numeracy focus will be on learning about the earnings of people in different industries.

Education support staff member Michael van Dorsser said the school community had embraced the theme and was planning to invite people from a range of fields to talk to the students.

Business professionals, tradespeople, sports stars, agricultural workers and emergency services and health personnel will share their knowledge with students and give insight to career paths the students may one day wish to pursue.

Mr van Dorsser said he expected the students would be very interested to learn from the various speakers and would be encouraged to ask questions.

Several family breakfasts, where parents will be invited along to the school, are planned and on the final day of Education Week students will have a dress-up day, where they exchange their school uniforms for clothing that represents a possible future career.

Exploring career paths An excursion to explore career options in the food and !bre industries has been scheduled as part of Education Week activities at Rushworth P"12 College.

Interested Years 9 and 10 students will travel to University of Melbourne’s Dookie Campus in keeping with the 2019 theme of ‘Celebrating Careers’.

College assistant principal Peter Bovell said the day would give students an insight into the agricultural industry as well as outlining the various pathways they could follow to establish careers.

“There are so many options in the food production and manufacturing fields and these excursions show students the direct link between their studies and a purpose, such as a career or vocation,” Mr Bovell said.

The school’s agricultural and horticultural teacher Steve Daws will accompany the students.

In other happenings at the college, Years 7 and 8 students will soon start a hands-on program to develop an outdoor learning area, which will see the Stephanie Alexander kitchen garden revived and space created for animals.

The free courses are offered in a range of study areas and are designed to train people in areas of demand from Victorian employers.

Website helps school choice A new interactive website has been launched by the Victorian Government to make it easier for parents to !nd out which school zone they live in.

Trade apprentices can study close to home and their places of employment at GOTAFE. “At GOTAFE, we have strong partnerships with industry and employers. You receive practical experience, sound career advice and have every opportunity to secure the job, promotion or the career change that you are working towards,” Mr Heeney said.

A recent $5.6 million funding boost for GOTAFE will help the organisation deliver courses and programs under the Victorian Government’s Regional and Specialist Training Fund and Workforce Training Innovation Fund.

Mr Heeney said both funds aimed to address skills gaps in regional areas and the funding boost would be directed to courses in the baking, dental assistance, nursing, cabinetmaking, engineering fabrication and health services fields.

The funding would help ensure GOTAFE’s curriculum was fully aligned to the current and future needs of local employers, industries and communities.

“We are resolutely committed to ensuring the needs of students

and industries, especially across regional Victoria, are at the heart of all we do,” Mr Heeney said.

“We are a diverse, welcoming community and GOTAFE is committed to supporting our students to achieve their desired goals. Our students’ success is our success,” he said.

Education Minister James Merlino said for the first time Victorian parents would be able to enter their home address online and see their local school zone.

The simple and easyto-use tool also has links to primary, secondary and specialist schools’ individual websites.

Mr Merlino said a number of anomalies in school zoning had been addressed; previously some homes were excluded from a school zone, and in some cases, school boundaries overlapped.

The Find My School website also includes zones for new schools

Making the transition from Kindergarten to Foundation can be an exciting time for children and their families. At Guthrie Street Primary School we understand this can be new and challenging. To ensure a smooth and supported transition for students, we offer a series of 4 transition sessions conducted over two months.

Students attend for one hour and get to participate in a variety of activities which are linked to experiences that students will have in their Foundation year.

opening in 2020, including Shepparton’s planned new secondary school.

The website allows parents to search for their closest school as well as find other nearby government schools.

Schools can be found by typing in a residential address or suburb or searching by school name.

Mr Merlino said the new website would provide parents with clarity and consistency on what their government school options were, and reiterated that every child had the right to enrol at their closest government school.

He said school choice was also very important, and schools would continue to have the choice to accommodate children living outside a school’s zone if there was enough space.
