Three decades showcasing rural innovation Welcome back to Mitchell Shire and the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo in 2022. We’re excited to have events and activities back on our shire’s calendar and we’re proud to once again host the annual Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The expo will celebrate 31 years in 2022 with more than 400 stallholders and exhibitors expected to appear at the show. The large number of visitors expected across the three days is a remarkable achievement and a real credit to the staff and volunteers who make it all happen. Agriculture is a vital part of Mitchell Shire, and the expo encourages continued growth, development and rural innovation and brings new ideas and techniques together. One of the many highlights is seeing familiar faces at the expo who come back each year to see the different exhibitors and learn new ideas. For 31 years we’ve seen the technology change, but the same can-do attitude is alive and well at the expo.

There is a wealth of knowledge and experience in the agricultural industry and at the expo you can get up close and personal and learn from many of these experienced people firsthand — a real win for beginners and experts alike. The rich produce of our region will also be on display at the expo, with plenty to eat and drink from a range of local and regional suppliers. If you’re visiting Mitchell Shire or have friends and family coming for the expo, be sure to ‘Discover Mitchell’ — now on Instagram and Facebook under the same name. Come and visit the Discover Mitchell Pop-Up Visitor Information booth during the event for further inspiration when planning your next trip to Mitchell. If you’re looking for natural attractions, you won’t be disappointed in Mitchell Shire. I encourage you to visit the Vietnam Veterans Commemorative Walk, the

Australian Light Horse Memorial Park and even our fishing platform on the Goulburn River. Our local restaurants, hotels, cafes and wineries are ready to welcome you. For those visiting the shire I hope you enjoy your stay in Seymour. Congratulations to the hardworking volunteers, staff and community members who have made this expo a success for more than three decades. I would particularly like to thank the Kings Park Committee of Management. Volunteers Ken Hall, Peter Oblak, Colin Davidson, Ossie Taylor, Carol Peterson and many others put in thousands of hours to make Kings Park such a magnificent venue. I would also like to extend a thank you to the patrons who have visited over the years and who are returning in 2022. Bill Chisholm Mitchell Shire Mayor

Mitchell Shire Council Mayor Bill Chisholm welcomes everyone to the 2022 expo.

Come and enjoy the expo The entertainment is ready, the animals are groomed and the gates at Seymour’s Kings Park are ready to open for the 31st Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Held in the heart of Victoria, the expo is a stalwart of the farming calendar, with more than 400 exhibitors raring to go. Event manager Jamie Gilbert said there had been great feedback from exhibitors, attendees and vendors after the 2021 event was held in April for the first time last year. “For the first 29 years it ran, the event was traditionally held during the third week of February,” he said. “Last year we trialled running it in April to coincide with easing of COVID restrictions and a cooler time of the year. The support for the change of date was very positive, so it’s full steam ahead for an April event again for 2022.” He said organisers had ensured all boxes were ticked for the COVID-safe event, with everything in place to make sure it goes off without a hitch. The expo puts the spotlight on modern farming methods, ag-tech solutions, and sustainability. “The latest technological

advancements, machinery and equipment for small acreage farming — you’ll find it all at the expo,” Jamie said. “Over the years the event has grown to incorporate sustainability, including off-the-grid, renewable resources and low-impact living. “There is also an opportunity to get up close and personal with unique livestock breeds, learn tips on raising unusual paddock pals and get upto-date on animal health and farm diversity ideas in the Small Farms Learning Hub.” And, as always, there’s plenty to ensure a great family fun day out, with star-studded entertainment for all ages. “We have a huge variety of exhibitors and I’m excited for people to experience the range that will be there on the day,” Jamie said. “There are drone, wood-chopping, working dog and horsemanship demonstrations, a chance to try your hand at whip-cracking or see the

Broadford butcher Victor Bonacci from Victory Meats will have the best cuts on show at the Seymour expo.

The ever-popular poultry pavilion will feature chickens, peafowls, turkeys and geese. Flipping Disc Dogs complete some impressive tricks. “There’s the ever-popular Kids’ Corner and the Country Kitchen and Butcher Shop where chef Adrian Hensley and

butcher Vic Bonacci will cook up a storm.” To ensure a quick and easy entry, please purchase tickets online, in advance.

Clever kelpies in action

Aviation delivers a spray An experienced aviation business will demonstrate how drones can deliver customised sprays to agriculture at this year’s Seymour expo. County Helicopters has been operating for more than 25 years and offers helicopter and drone services including aerial stock mustering; feral animal control; aerial fertiliser and aerial spraying operations; frost mitigation for orchards, vineyards and potatoes; forestry services; crop analysis services; greenhouse spraying; and mosquito control. The drones can deliver spray to areas which may otherwise be impossible or difficult to reach. County Helicopters uses commercialscale drones and the operators hold certificates for flying and licences for the use of chemicals. All applications are applied using the latest technology in DGPS satellite guidance, flow control and data capture. Extensive spray pattern testing, droplet spectrum and new technology capture testing is carried out on an annual basis to ensure

County Helicopters operate from three bases — Ballarat in Victoria. and Clare and Virginia in South Australia. See them on the main oval.

Beloka Kelpies Working Dog Education has got you covered. Returning to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo for another year, Paul Macphail — the big dog in charge — said expo visitors could expect to see demonstrations with the fully trained kelpies, some young dogs still in training and puppies. Paul said he would also talk about the difference in kelpies compared to other dog breeds, and why kelpies needed a different training approach. “Treat training doesn’t really work with your working dog breeds,” he said. “You need to show good leadership skills in order for your kelpie to accept you as their boss. “They want to work, to do a job, and that doesn’t have to be herding. “It’s all about focusing on their brain — they are very smart dogs.” See Beloka Kelpies on the main oval.

Improving horse welfare

Axel, one of the horses rehabilitated through Project Hope.

Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria is looking forward to highlighting its work to improve equine welfare at this year’s expo. The not-for-profit organisation was started by Val Collingwood, a keen horsewoman from Wallan, who had rescued a severely neglected horse she named Hope. Supposedly aged, Hope was in fact only three years old and badly malnourished. He died three weeks later due to a massive worm infestation. Hope’s plight prompted Val to put forward a proposal to rescue and rehabilitate horses in need, which was the start of Project Hope Horse Welfare Victoria. President Kathryn Wren said this would be the organisation’s second year at the expo and they were all looking forward to it. “Our aim is to improve horses’ wellbeing by educating

TANIA MAXWELL MP

people about horse welfare issues,” she said. “We also visit horses who have been reported as needing help and offer assistance. In cases where horses are surrendered to Project Hope, we assess their needs and start the rehabilitation process, with a view to finding them a long-term home.” Kathryn said Project Hope was reliant on the generosity of volunteers and supporters and would be encouraging people to become a member. “We’ll have a raffle, plenty of merchandise and information on hand and knowledgeable people available to answer your questions and provide advice,” she said. Horsemanship sessions will also be held across the weekend. Visit Project Hope at site LP4.

Get cracking at Seymour Some of Australia’s best whip-crackers will show off their skills at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The 2022 Australian Whipcrackers and Plaiters Association (AWPA) Victorian Whipcracking and Bullock Whip Championships will be held on the Saturday at this year’s event. There will be plenty of action in peewees, juveniles, juniors, men’s, women’s and over-45s sections as competitors pit their skills against each other. Using two whips at a time in the stockwhips sections, the entrants compete firstly in a target competition where they

are judged on their accuracy at hitting targets. Next is a tricks section, where competitors perform up to 10 tricks with their whips. AWPA secretary Simon, Martin said these can be from something as simple as a ‘cattleman’s crack’, which is a traditional stockman’s crack which focuses on the loudness of the crack, to the more difficult ‘Tasmanian twist’ where they crack their whip behind their back, to playing tunes or making their cracks sound like a steam train.

Georgia Pitman came second in the last Australian championships in the women’s section.

Next is a freestyle routine where competitors show off their skills continuously for one minute in the junior, men’s and women’s competitions, or for 30 seconds in the peewees, juveniles and over-45s competitions. There is also a bullock whip section where all ages compete in the one section, using the much longer bullock whips. As well as the expo playing host to the Victorian championships,

there will also be whipcracking demonstrations on Sunday. Simon said the expo provided a great chance for people to see a unique sport in action. “It’s part of our (Australian) culture and heritage,” he said. “The stockwhip is a uniquely Australian whip.” And with the whips cracking at the speed of sound, they create a sonic boom — and that alone is sure to draw a crowd.

Henry Pitman competes in the target section at the Australian Whipcracking Championships.

Learn how to whip it Looking for a cracking good time? The Australian Whipcrackers and Plaiters Association is making sure children and adults get their chance to experience an Australian tradition, holding whipcracking demonstrations at the expo on Sunday. After a 15-minute demonstration from 15-year-old Australian Junior Champion whip-cracker Max Kamp and 17-year-old Kiera Buzza, the crowd will be given the opportunity to try their hand at the skill. With three completely different shows there’s plenty to enjoy throughout the day, with both Max and Kiera showcasing a number of different routines. Once armed with a hat and safety glasses it is over to the audience. 10

Australian Whipcrackers and Plaiters Association’s Heather Buzza said the demonstrations were always a big hit. “The kids absolutely love it and the adults too,” she said. “Max is absolutely amazing and Kiera is just incredible too. “It’s a great chance to teach them how to crack the whip and keep the tradition alive. “If kids have come along to watch the show in the morning you normally see them coming back for another look. “It’s really interactive. “The kids actually learn to crack quicker than the adults — you’ve just got to let it happen and not think too much about it. “Come along and have a go.”

FAMILY FUN & ENTERTAINMENT

You’ll flip out over these dogs Prepare to be amazed and delighted when Flipping Disc Dogz take to the stage at the Seymour expo. Forget sit, drop and roll over — Beau Pearson and Sim Hellebrand’s 10 border collies will show you tricks you never thought possible. From high-flying acrobatics, to world-first and Australia-first tricks, the Flipping Disc Dogz are truly a sight to behold. The four-paw high-five by Super Sienna will be a highlight of the show. Super Sienna is just one of three dogs in the world able to perform the trick and will also attempt to flip with all four paws vaulting off

just his knuckles as a platform. After last year’s world record-breaking feat, which saw Mickey Mouse jump 16 people, Beau said he was excited to get back to Seymour’s Kings Park and have Mickey’s daughters Bridie and Zoe join them and show they could fly just as well, if not better, than their dad. “It’ll be good to be back … I grew up in this area and the expo is great for the town of Seymour and regional towns,” Beau said. “(The dogs) love performing.

“Before they go on stage they get so excited — and they hear the music, they go berserk.” If you’ve ever wanted to see a dog on a skateboard, your wish will be granted, with a potential competition between two of the dogs — on a tightrope — even on the cards. And a trick entitled the ‘leap of faith’ will leave you on the edge of your seat, as one of the furry performers climbs a 3 m wall before jumping into Beau’s arms. Check out all the action on the main oval.

A farmyard filled with fun Farmer Darryl and his herd of furry and feathered friends will be back at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Farmer Darryl’s Mobile Animal Farm is a big hit every year and will once again give expo visitors the chance to get up close and personal with a farmyard full of animals and birds. Sheep, calves, goats, roosters, hens, lambs, baby rabbits and Princess the piglet are all a part of the interactive display, where children are invited to pat, brush and feed the friendly animals. Darryl Sheridan has been running the mobile farm for 22 years and has gradually built up a collection of creatures to the point they are now able to bring along mothers and their babies. He said it was a fun experience for young and old. “I’m always so excited to come along for the expo,” Darryl said. “Everyone has a different favourite animal. “It’s just the best to get everyone along and have them spend some time and enjoy the animals.”

Farmer Darryl is back at the expo with all the family farmyard favourites.

The stud’s display encompasses the animals and product. “Part of that is the interaction with people,” stud owner Daniel Boote said. “We’ll discuss the farming process from husbandry, health care and nutritional needs to the overall set-up required to care for alpacas,” he said. “We find that alpacas interacting with visitors plays a big part in helping to explain that. “It is a hands-on experience, we like to allow people to be up-and-close with the alpacas.

Eden Rise Alpacas is expanding. Stud owners Samantha and Steven Schwebach said they would have two alpacas for people to come and see at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Samantha said Eden Rise Alpacas loved coming to the expo to educate people about how alpacas make great livestock additions and companion animals for hobby farmers. “It’s a great opportunity to learn more about alpacas,” she said. “We’ll educate on what a wonderful and unique animal they are, what they can produce with their fleece and also how they’re good herd guard and companion animals.” Patrons can also get their hands on knitted products from the fleeces and fibres of Eden Rise Alpacas, including mittens, beanies and scarves, as well as imported alpaca products from Peru, such as ponchos, jumpers, throw rugs and socks. The family is also very excited to be launching a new endeavour, as their daughters introduce their own business — Eden Rise Australian Miniature Goats. Samantha said Claudia and Ava would be bringing two very endearing and friendly mini-goats called Milo and Toffee, who were sure to win crowds over with their wonderful personalities. Eden Rise Alpacas and Mini-Goats are based in Glenaroua. The alpaca business started about 14 years ago and the farm has about 50 alpacas, which are used for fleece products and bred to produce healthy and well-handled animals. See Eden Rise Alpacas and Miniature Goats at The Livestock Pavilion.

Farmer Darryl’s Mobile Animal Farm will both entertain and educate for the three days of the expo, with Story Time also running at 3pm every day.

Up close and personal with alpacas Always a popular attraction at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is Avenel Ridge Alpacas.

Mini-goats join alpaca stud

As well bringing along two alpacas, Eden Rise Alpacas will also have alpaca products available at the expo.

“It’s a good way to show the normally good temperament of alpacas.” Daniel said he had a range of alpacas, including white and other colours, within his stud but wanted to continue improving that. “Our focus moving forward will be multi-coloured herd and appaloosa fleece.” Avenel Ridge Alpacas is based in Avenel, in north-central Victoria. It started about 13 years ago and is a multi-generational enterprise with Daniel, his mum and his three children all involved. Daniel said they were all attending the expo and encouraged everyone to drop by and say hello. Avenel Ridge Alpacas is at site LP2. Miniature goats are now part of the Eden Rise Alpacas enterprise.

On the chopping block

Axemen competing in an underhand event.

Champion axemen from around Australia will demonstrate their astounding skills in competitions at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. As well as the traditional, open standing block and underhand events, the crowd will be treated to one of the most popular, newest and noisiest events — chainsaw racing. Using modified chainsaws called ‘hot’ saws, the crowd will hear the energy from this fast-paced and technical event. The traditional events, illustrating raw skill and power, still attract a lot of attention. World champion Brayden Meyer, 26, from Flowerdale, will be competing at Seymour. He is a fourth generation woodchopper who has been named world champion 14 times and holds 151 championship titles from Victoria, Australia and New Zealand. He is the youngest ever winner of the Stihl Timbersports World Championship at 24 years old and has been placed in the top three in every Stihl Timbersports event in Australia since 2015 and won twice in 2015 and 2019.

He has travelled the world, visiting Europe seven times and represented Australia in New Zealand four times. Also in Seymour will be Brayden’s brother, Blake, who is a Victorian champion and regular tree felling world champion finalist at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The open standing block and underhand events will pit the very best axemen in the world against the everyday axemen in the same field. In these handicapped events, the crowd can see the back markers chase from behind or a front marker earn a well-deserved win. Underhand events involve the axemen standing on the log and cutting between their feet. In the novice events, juniors will demonstrate their skill and growing technique under the guidance of experienced axemen. This class often includes women competitors as they start making their impact on the sport. The woodchop demonstrations will be held on Saturday and competitions on Sunday on the back oval at the expo.

Still helping after 164 years A society older than Federation will be serving sit-down meals and running cattle handling classes at the Seymour expo. The Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society was formed in 1858 to help promote good farming practices as Victoria rapidly filled with settlers, some experienced stockmen and others not so much. These days the society can be found serving cold drinks and hot meals at the expo in the Ken Hall pavilion. Vice-president Stephen Koch considers it all part of the same greater picture. “The ag society exists as a service to the community,” he said. “Everything we serve is made by the volunteers, who are a mixture of town and country people.” All the money raised goes towards the society’s other annual events:

the Seymour Show in October and working sheepdog trial in March. Society president Jason Ronald said a set of commemorative stamps would come out soon to celebrate the long-running working sheepdog trial. Running for so long, Jason said it was always a challenge to keep volunteer numbers up. “Finding volunteers is hard, anyone will tell you that, but I find if you ask people generally they want to help,” he said. “For the show you ask people who have an interest in produce, photography or alpacas for instance, then they’ll help with that aspect and bring their friends along. “For the dog trial we’ve always gotten farmers who are certainly interested in the sheepdogs.” The society also runs a scholarship scheme each year for university students in ag-related fields.

“We fund that with money invested over the years,” Jason said. “There are some trustees who handle that side of things.” The society also runs a series of lectures at the expo. Stephen runs the lecture on basic cattle handling with his own cattle. “I think people get a lot out of it, especially when they don’t know cattle,” he said. “We’ll end up in the cattle yards and I’ll tailor the lesson to the audience.” Stephen said there were two meanings for the words ‘alternative farming’. “You have people who turn up looking for alternative ways they can farm on their property, then you have the ones looking for an alternative to town living. “The Seymour Ag Society has

WHAT ARE THE ALTERNATIVES TO WORKING SAFELY WITH GAS AND ELECTRICITY? (Hint: there aren’t any) It might be not staying clear of potentially deadly powerlines when operating machinery and keeping trees near them properly pruned. Maybe failing to use a licensed electrician for that 'little job', or forgetting to 'dial before you dig'. Not getting your solar panels or other renewable energy installations serviced regularly. Or not getting your gas heater serviced every couple of years. There are 101 ways you can do the wrong thing with gas and electricity, and sadly doing the wrong thing can be disastrous, for you and your family. There's one really good thing you can do today. Drop by the Energy Safe Victoria stall (number L22) and grab some useful info on energy safety in both a domestic and rural environment, and spend a minute to get to know us better. If you can't get to our stall, visit our website esv.vic.gov.au, for energy safety information. Being safe with energy is a great choice, every day!

SUSTAINABILITY & INNOVATION Innovation. It’s buzzword that at its heart, is really all about turning an idea into a solution.

A natural approach to beating fertiliser price increases No doubt every farmer in Australia is feeling the pain caused by the big jump in the price of fertiliser. The hike in fertiliser prices can be blamed on a supply shortage and huge increases in energy and global urea costs. Then there’s the impact of the downturn in gas production that’s affected China, causing that country to retain fertiliser stock for its own domestic market. Plus, there’ve been massive disruptions to worldwide shipping, resulting in significant cost increases. This all adds up to a huge headache for Australian farmers but Biolink 4 Plants can help to boost the efficiency of fertilisers use.

The Biolink 4 Plants range of organic microbial-based fertilisers and soil stimulants works alongside a farm’s valuable fertiliser by: •

making nutrients more readily available to plants in any farming system;

•

reducing the volatisation of nitrogen and lock-up of phosphorus in the soil; and

•

holding onto potassium so that it doesn’t get washed away from the system via rainfall.

By incorporating Biolink 4 Plants products into their farm management systems, farmers are reducing fertiliser input levels and making better use of their investment. They also get the benefits that come from

reintroducing soil biology into the system. The microbes in Biolink products enrich the soil and make nutrients more available to all crop types. And, by including humic fulvic as an ingredient in Biolink 4 Plants products, the water-holding capacity of plants is increased. Though fertiliser price increases will continue to be a challenge, this is an opportunity for everyone in agriculture to reassess farm inputs and find a more sustainable way of operating – both financially and environmentally. Visit Biolinks 4 Plants at site E18 and find out how you can beat fertiliser prices increases and increase your crop yields.

Make light work of hay It began with a hobby farm. Asphoweld founder Andrew McNaughton couldn’t quite justify buying a new tractor for the small amount of work required on his farm, so the keen welder created a car trailer able to hitch and haul hay instead. “I was pretty happy with the outcome so I made some small improvements on the design and continued to build more to sell to other farmers,” Andrew said. “We supply in equal proportion to both hobby farmers and commercial farmers. “Many of our hobby farmer customers have a small number of livestock to feed, but still require a way of feeding out hay bales. “A number of our commercial farmers use the hay trailer to service their outblocks when they don’t otherwise require a second tractor.” Asphoweld plans to bring two different style round bale trailers to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, with an option of either electric or manual winch.

“Many of our customers comment that the hay trailers make a huge positive difference to their workload on their farm,” Andrew said. The trailers are made completely inhouse at Toolamba from first-grade Australian steel sourced locally. With the price of steel rising, Asphoweld has gone all in and purchased a bulk order of firstgrade Australian steel so the business can continue to deliver orders without interruptions to supply and unexpected price increases. Customers will be able to place an order for their preferred trailer at Asphoweld’s expo site at LP3.

Heat water more efficiently Do you want to heat water smarter and more efficiently? Energy Smart Water has a range of products designed to do exactly this. Today’s energy focus is on smarter ways to provide energy sources to maximise solar yields for services once only met by gas or direct electrical transmission mains, and now often supplied by overseas entities. If you want to be in control of your energy costs and supplies, you can now have a water heating system that absorbs its energy requirements from solar PV panels providing a DC supply into a submersible heating element in a tank that hardly loses any heat. Having an electrical heating element submerged in unpressurised water provides the highest energy transfer by using stainless steel coils to absorb the solar energy yield and transfer that to heated water for your domestic or hydronic heating needs. Energy Smart Water, using the latest Enermax and MYPV technologies from Europe, can give you peace of mind and

ownership of your energy delivery and use for years to come. Enermax and MYPV take energy from solar PV panels, creating a system for water heating, making your roof work for you to deliver the most hygienic heated water possible. Whether they’re PV or PVT panels, your energy source and the Enermax tank provide end users with supply and energy efficiencies far beyond the transmission supplies. The thermal energy stored in the tank water performs as a ‘thermal battery’ ready for use when required. Single or multiple tanks can be used for residential or commercial heating applications. The Enermax heat exchange tank can be used for water heating or hydronic heating, or both simultaneously. From small dwellings all the way up to the largest agricultural, industrial or commercial application, Energy Smart Water can assist with designing a solution for any water heating requirement.

Fifty years of fencing innovation Starting in 1867, leading manufacturer Munro Engineers has moved from tobacco presses, chaff cutters and conveyors into world-leading fencing machinery. Munro first launched its revolutionary post driver in 1964. In the five decades since, the Victorian company has sold thousands of its post-hole drivers in Australia and across the world. Company owner Warren McLean said the original Munro posthole driver was manufactured after a bet between two farmers about who could make the best post-hole driver. “The farmer who won the bet, Alastair Mackenzie, and his friend Max Brooke, a hydraulics engineer, approached my father Max McLean,” Warren said. “We finished the design and manufactured the first model in 1964. “It was the first machine in the world that combined an auger and a driver for installing posts.” The popularity of the new post-hole driver, which revolutionised the art of fencing, prompted Munro Engineers to specialise in fencing products. “Our service and spare parts are second to none,” Warren said. “We really look after our customers, many of whom are repeat buyers. “The feedback from customers is about how long the machine lasts, how well it’s made and how well it does the job that it’s designed to do. “Single-man fencing contractors who have swapped to the AutoDriver say it’s increased their productivity, with some doubling the number of posts they are able to install in an hour.” The recently introduced WireWinder is another great product manufactured by Munro. Allowing users to coil 500 metres of fencing in under a minute, the WireWinder is proving popular with contractors and farmers. A 120 hectare dairy farm with a lane system was wound up in just over two days. This would take almost three weeks by hand. For those involved in strip grazing, Munro has now manufactured the FenceBoss temporary electric fence system. This system is designed to make setting up and pulling down temporary electric fencing quicker, easier and safer. It prevents loss and damage to reels and pegs while making transporting them a breeze. For information on these products, visit site B48.

Energy Smart Water, using the latest Enermax and MYPV technologies from Europe, can give you peace of mind and ownership of your energy delivery and use for years to come. Whether you have an existing solar installation or are considering solar for your business or home, your solar installation can now be optimised to divert surplus electricity with the AC-THOR Photovoltaic Power Manager for water heating prior to grid export or battery storage. Visit Energy Smart Water and Thermal Energy Solutions at stand L2 to learn more and see the live operating display.

Hemp beats energy crisis The popularity of hemp houses continues to gain momentum around the country as home owners seek out more energy-efficient, comfortable and sustainable housing options. During the past five years, many of the people making the switch to hemp first learned about it at the Seymour expo. “The expo has been a great platform to be able to fully explain the process and benefits of building a hemp home,” David Brian from Southern Hemp, based in northern Victoria, said. With the continuing increase in energy costs combined with the increasing pressure to do things more sustainably, hemp houses tick all the boxes — saving up to 80 per cent on energy costs, it has a high fire rating, is breathable and is a great way to lock up carbon. “The great thing for the builders is the building process for a hemp house is mostly similar to building a brick veneer,” David said. “Builders have quickly understood it and embraced the process.” The hemp and natural lime mix is placed in formwork each side of the timber frame and lightly tamped down. When the formwork is removed the timber frame is left encased within the 300 mm hemp wall ready for rendering. “The design and creativity of a hemp house is as flexible as you want to make your formwork,” David said. One hectare of hemp is enough

to build the average house and many farmers are now embarking on growing hemp in Victoria and southern NSW for the housing market, as well as numerous other new and emerging markets. Hemp crops grown for their stalk are sown in late September/early October and harvested in February/March when about four metres in height. David is available to discuss hemp growing with interested farmers and will also be doing ‘Hemp Farming’ talks each day at midday in the Learning Hub. He will also do two hemp building demonstrations at 10.30 am and 2 pm each day. The Southern Hemp display covering hemp building and hemp farming is at site T47.

FARMING & LIVESTOCK Big future for White sheep On Fish Creek Farm, sheep are the future — specifically, Australian Whites. Developed in NSW in the 2010s, Australian Whites are a self-shedding, hardy meat breed currently taking the agricultural world by storm. Fish Creek is no exception. Jason and Sarah Keays are passionate stud farmers who like to take on promising young breeds. Their track record includes Speckle Park cattle, rare chickens, miniature goats and prime Suffolk crossbreds. “I’m a former head judge of the Australian Food Awards. I’ve eaten a lot of cuts but these sheep are a different product,” Jason said. “I see a big future for self-shedding meat sheep because it’s getting harder to find shearers and crutch.” The Fish Creek Farm Australian White stud will bring four ewes and four rams to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. The four rams will be available at the stud’s upcoming AuctionsPlus sale on April 30.

“This will be our first time at the expo. We’ve been before as visitors, it’s one of my favourite expos,” Jason said. “I think there will be a lot of people attending who’ll be interested in the Australian Whites, especially with cattle prices the way they are, sheep are becoming the easier option for people trying to get into livestock.” Fish Creek Farm has been running Australian Whites for three years with Tattykeel and Ardess bloodlines. Jason said a lot of farmers he previously sold show-quality Speckle Parks to are now buying commercial ewes and flock Australian White rams. “I call the Australian Whites the cattleman’s sheep,” he said. “They are like miniature cattle really — you vaccinate, drench and mineralise them like you do with cattle. It’s the same amount of work but you can run so much more in the paddock.” To learn more, visit Fish Creek Farm at site B9B.

POULTRY Show-stopping poultry It dosen’t get more popular than the poultry pavilion at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Seymour Poultry Club president Elizabeth Vidos described it as one of the greatest poultry sales in Victoria. “We have the top breeders and judges at the expo,” Elizabeth said. “It’s basically a sale and it’s getting bigger and bigger with every year.” Novices and die-hards rub shoulders between the 400 pens, inspecting a living display of rare and uncommon birds. “We get everything, from people looking for birds with blue eggs to breeders trying to improve their flocks,” Elizabeth said. “The expo is really great for the club because it helps us preserve the rare breeds we’re all trying so hard to keep from extinction.” Poultry club members will be on hand to answer any and all questions. “We try to help people as much as we can,” Elizabeth said. “Helping them deicide on the right fit for their backyard and find the chickens they want.” This year the poultry pavilion will feature chickens, peafowls, turkeys and geese. “We decided against having ducks this year because they can be too messy,” Elizabeth said. “The peafowls aren’t there every year. It depends on if they’ve had a good breeding season or not. People find them to be amazing additions to their property.”

Chooks are on the move While we all love chooks, they don’t make the best house guests — so send them packing with a Chicken Caravan. Left too long in one spot poultry will turn your garden into a Martian landscape, full of dust bath craters, clawed up grass and poo so high in nitrogen it can kill your plants. Enter Daniel O’Brien, who created the Chicken Caravan a decade ago after starting his own free-range egg business. “I needed a mobile chicken shed but there was nothing on the market,” Daniel said. “So I made my own and 12 months later other farmers were buying from us.” Daniel will attend the Seymour expo with his Chicken Caravan 10, Chicken Caravan 30 and electric chicken fencing. “Every time we develop a new product it is always about saving time. We love efficiency,” he said.

The Seymour Poultry Club is partnered with the Rare Breeds Trust to help maintain the health and national flock of rare breeds such as the Sussex, Australian Pit Game and Legbar. A breed is considered rare if there are less than 500 breeding birds in the country. “We don’t want breeds to go extinct,” Elizabeth said. “We basically want a bird to be the best of its type, and by breeding for that you’re preserving the ancestry and history of that bird.” The generation-five Chicken Caravan 30 will be hitching a ride to the expo to show off its “awesome new features”. “We have a lot of customers around the Seymour area so it’s great to be able to connect with them face-to-face and show them some new improvements that we have been working on,” Daniel said. Small chicken caravans can house 10 to 30 hens for people who want a hobby flock, while larger caravans can house 130, 450 to 600 laying hens for those looking to make a business out of it. Visit Chicken Caravan at site B26.

For example, the Sussex is an English breed that’s been around for thousands of years while the Australian Pit Game is a courageous bird developed from Indian game birds in the 1900s by British soldiers stationed in NSW looking for enthusiastic, powerful fighters. On June 18, the Seymour Poultry Club will hold its championship show with internationally renowned judge Grame Hopf and the Norvstrom brothers. The popular question of ‘what chicken lays blue eggs?’ actually has two answers: an Araucana and a Cream Legbar. Keep an eye out for them in the Poultry Pavilion.

The A, B and C of beekeeping Australian Bee Supplies is attending the expo for the first time, bringing its extensive range of bee hardware to the event. “We’re excited to be joining the expo and bringing our business and expertise to Seymour,” Andrew Stanish said. “I’ve come to the expo before but with a different company, so I’m excited to be back again,” he said. “We provide hardware for hobby and commercial beekeepers and apiarists, and we also breed bees. “On top of that, we supply honey, bee pollen, beeswax, bee suits — basically everything that is needed to manage bees. “We’re very excited to expose our brand and to teach people about bees and our environment.” Australian Bee Supplies will hold educational classes across the three days of the expo, to educate apiarists on how to safely keep bees. “We’re going to be holding a show-and-tell about bees, which will teach people about the three different types of hives and about what is involved in beekeeping and how to stay safe and other aspects of that,” Andrew said. “We have a science background so the classes will build off that.” Visit Australian Bee Supplies at site C52.

Water tanks with a lifetime guarantee Hi Water Concrete Tanks is a Seymour Alternative Farming Expo stalwart. Mitch Miller said the business prided itself on only using the highest quality materials and offering a lifetime guarantee. “All of our waterproofed concrete tanks are poured on site and are suited for industrial, rural and residential applications — including hobby farm water storage, cellars, water treatment, milk chilling, firefighting,” Mitch said. “And with a 30-year agreement, that’s great peace of mind for our customers.” The range includes waterproofed concrete tanks for above ground or below ground, with concrete tops or silo roofs from around 22,500 litres to 120,000 litres. Based in Wodonga and servicing all of Victoria and NSW, the business was started by Steve Miller in 1993 who has built up 45 years’ industry experience. Steve’s brother Mitch has attended the Seymour expo for years and said the family business enjoyed coming back and meeting customers. “We like to talk to new people and find that people really appreciate us explaining the construction of our waterproofed concrete tanks plus showing photos of what we do step-by-step,” Mitch said.

Wodonga-based Hi Water Concrete Tanks is an expo regular. “We want to be able to help people by giving them a product that suits their needs and lasts a lifetime.” Hi Water Concrete Tanks’ staff members also repair existing concrete tanks and are happy to provide quotes and explain the restoration process; they also sell Maxi Jet Pumps and install Tank Vac systems. Visit the Hi Water Concrete Tanks team at site C47 and C48.

Wood heating excellence Maison Fireplaces will showcase its range of highly efficient, clean-burning European cookers, stoves and fireplaces from leading Italian and European wood fireplace and wood cooker manufacturers, including La Nordica-Extraflame, Thermorossi and Kobok at this year’s expo. The range is designed to exceed the highest environmental standards and uses the latest combustion technology to produce more heat with less wood. Maison Fireplaces’ heating systems are unparalleled in design, heating performance, efficiency, ease of operation and product versatility. There is a comprehensive range of built-in fireplaces using vertical and large horizontal door openings as well as double-sided, corner and large panoramic fireplaces, up to 1570 mm wide, with a vertical door. Then there are the free-standing radiant heaters. Radiant heat — also known as the healthy heat — heats solid objects rather than the air in the same way that you feel warm from the sun. With radiant heat there is less air movement thereby reducing house dust. It also results in less drying of the air.

Maison Fireplaces says its range produces more heat with less wood. Radiant heat results in temperature difference from floor to ceiling of 2 to 3°C compared to 12 to 15°C with convection heating. That means less kW to warm your home and less wood being consumed, saving you time and money with less impact on the environment.

Maison Fireplaces prides itself on providing stylish and efficient heating.

Customers report using one third the amount of wood they previously used to heat their homes once they made the switch. The range includes traditionally styled and modern wood cookers, with or without hydronic options. The new Forno (oven) wood heaters are ideal to enhance

indoor/outdoor entertaining areas. Be sure to stop by the modern mobile showroom at the expo, feel the radiant heat and sample a slice of Italian-inspired pizza cooked using the Margherita patented double oven wood cooker. For more information, visit site L16-17.

Machinery for every need Machinery is the backbone of modern farming and any decisions you make about the highly specialised equipment could affect your farm for decades. Therefore, you want to deal with the experts. Haeusler’s Shepparton has been the Goulburn Valley’s local John Deere dealership for more than 20 years. The iconic green and yellow of a John Deere is a stamp of quality, but for many experienced farmers it’s the dealership, servicing, spare parts availability and the staff who make or break a purchase. The team at Haeusler’s have strong connections with the land and enjoy helping new property owners get started on their farming journey. At Haeusler’s you can find much more than John Deere, with the business also supporting high quality brands like Kuhn (great supply chain), Wacker Neuson (construction machinery), Davimac (chaser bin specialist) and Gason (broadacre tractor attachments) brands. The Seymour expo is an important date on the calendar for Haeusler’s as it allows the team to showcase the smaller equipment that suits lifestyle farmers.

The lifestyler’s favourite: A John Deere 5E tractor with a four-in-one bucket attachment. The bucket can also be changed for hay spikes. The most popular seller for this lifestyle segment is the John Deere 5E range. 5E models range from 50 to 93 horsepower and are great little allrounders able to fit inside sheds and through gates. These tractors traditionally come equipped with a four-in-one bucket

Est 2014

and hay spikes, with optional extras including slashers, post-hole diggers and tillage equipment. The 5E is a great tractor option for someone who only needs a helping hand in the hayshed and for odd jobs, compared to someone who’ll be spending six-days-a-week in the cab.

The 5E is cheaper than a new ute, with the four-wheel drive, opencab version clocking in at around $29,000. For advice on a range of products, from ride-on lawn mowers to tractors and construction equipment, visit site L67–68.

Sweet flavours of the forest Ironbark Apiaries specialises in native flora honey. The business manages its hives in tracts of native forest, mostly around the Rushworth area. The range includes: black box, red gum, raw honey, honeycomb, creamed honey and, of course, ironbark honey. Each has its own distinct taste.

Shane and Andrew Clarke are third and fourth generation beekeepers. Creamed honey (also known as honey beekeeper Shane Clarke said. fondant) is a fan favourite and is “White clover and lucerne, strawberry often sold out. clover — they are all beautiful honeys, but you can’t get a lot of it now The fourth generation family business because farmers turn it all into silage will bring a range of products and the lucerne gets cut for hay. and taste testing opportunities to Seymour. “Banksia is one of the worst honeys you can ever taste, it is like Tasmanian “Every honey has a different flavour. leatherwood.” Most of them have a different colour,”

Currently, 90 per cent of Ironbark Apiaries’ honey is sold to Beechworth Honey, but the remaining 10 per cent is kept back for local sale under its own name. If you’d like to discover Ironbark Apiaries’ honey for yourself go to site C32A.

sure consistent high production. The options for farmers in improving WUE through water quality and cleaning/ maintaining irrigation systems has been very limited. The only option has been toxic chemicals that are dangerous, have a negative effect on equipment, soils and crops. One company that understands this better than most is Advanced Nutrients. "Water quality and delivery systems of it, is a major consideration in efficient irrigation for all crops," Advanced Nutrients managing director, Craig Salmon said. "Blockages and restrictions cause higher operating costs, poor WUE, and irregular plant growth. "In addition, it causes poor water penetration and poor distribution throughout the soil and only adds to poor WUE. "We all understand the importance of irrigation for food and fibre production,

Connecting Australian agriculture Connectivity has a key role in advancing Australian agriculture towards its $100 billion production value by 2030 vision, a target set by the National Farmers’ Federation. Farming in 2030 will be different compared to today. It will most likely be carbon neutral, in line with industry’s own vision, supported by a digitally-enabled virtual stewardship and sustainability marketplace. Through investments farmers will reap the rewards of a data windfall, possibly even sharing data along the supply chain to realise financial dividends. On-farm digital connectivity has seen farmers connect all manner of sensors, which has allowed them to reduce the cost of inputs such as fertiliser, water and chemicals. Vastly improved, real-time connected digital platforms are enabling farmers to better manage their soils and pasture, optimising the grazing of animals for better animal welfare outcomes and improved consumer consumption quality. While it is already possible to digitally trade cattle from one property to another without the need to first transport them to a livestock selling centre, there’s every chance this

Beyond the farm gate, the digital revolution has changed the way consumers consider the food journey. conscious consumers will be able to see how the meat they are consuming has been treated on-farm, understand the way the food was produced and how it was ethically and sustainably made available for consumption. With the right investments and decisions at an individual farm level, farmers can access the nbn network to power all manner of digital agricultural operations, including in

the paddock where it’s needed. These solutions are available today. With the current strength of the sector, Australia’s farmers have a great opportunity to make investments today to enable their farm businesses long into the future. The nbn network is made for more, including more smart farming — nbn is excited to be on this journey with you.

FOOD & DRINK

The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is a foodie’s delight. With an action-packed schedule of demonstrations over the three days, there’s no escaping the delicious smells wafting from the Country Kitchen. On Friday, we’re excited to be joined by chef Riccardo Momesso, who after owning and cooking at Sarti, a one-hatted restaurant in Melbourne, embraced his Calabrian roots with his suburban venture Valentino before moving on to own and operate Ferrovia in

Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Then on Saturday and Sunday Secret Garden chef Adrian Hensley will again serve up his educational and interactive sessions, including all things barbecue. Joining Adrian will be experienced butcher Vic Bonacci, who among other things, will demonstrate how to use the whole carcass from nose to tail with minimal waste.

There will also plenty of options for a refreshing drink or a tasty meal in the Food Court including: AJ’s Eventuate offering freshly cooked burgers, egg and bacon rolls, chips and dimsims, wraps and a range of drinks; and Whippd with refreshing soft serve ice cream, gelati and soft drinks. Whatever you’re after you’re sure to find something to tantalise your taste buds.

The Butcher will share his knowledge Broadford butcher Victor Bonacci from Victory Meats will have the best cuts on show at the Seymour expo. Vic Bonacci has been a butcher for 25 years and knows plenty about meat and where to source good local product. He said that Habbies Howe Beef would be on display in all his beef demos and all other products were sourced from local farmers and producers. Paul Boag from Paul Boag’s Outdoors will be involved with the venison demonstration on field dressing. Adrian Hensley from Secret Garden will also have some of Vic’s meat sizzling away as part of several demonstrations during the expo. Vic said preparation of briskets, pork legs, prosciutto and more would also be demonstrated. “We’ll be giving the full insight into how it’s done and where cuts of meat come from,” he said. “We’ll be showing how to use the whole carcass from nose to tail with minimal waste. “A lot of people are interested in that side of it.”

Game, set, match with Adrian and Lila Chef Adrian Hensley and daughter Lila are back again after a hugely successful weekend at last year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Adrian said this year he was keen to focus on cooking game and will bring back kangaroo as a highlight for his Saturday sessions and venison on the Sunday. This year there will also be an All Time BBQ Hour (actually one-and-a-half hours) — a big session focusing on the use of the kettle Weber barbecue, smokers and old-school classic flat-top barbecues. “We will introduce the audience to the world of Secret Garden chef Adrian Hensley is back for reverse sear steaks, smash burgers and some the eighth year with his much-loved cooking American low and slow classics,” Adrian said. demonstrations. These sessions will be held on Saturday and Sunday, with the final session on Saturday seeing “This is something I’ve been doing for over 20 years and l will show the audience how easy it is to Adrian taking the humble chook and showing make a quick and simple wedding cake,” he said. people how to break it down and use it for a couple of different dishes. “And after Sunday’s barbecue session we will be finishing off the day with my popular cinnamon Adrian said Lila was super excited to be back and buns — I started making them for my work during to show off her old-fashioned cookie press and demonstrate how to easily turn great cookies into the lockdowns and they are now one of the most requested items I make.” a gluten-free treat. For all this and more, visit Adrian and Lila on Sunday will see Adrian kick the morning off Saturday and Sunday in the Country Kitchen. decorating cakes.

From vine to wine, study boosts careers Australia is home to some of the best wine growing regions in the world — but have you ever stopped to think about how your wine goes from grape to glass? Across the industry, interest in and demand for qualified viticulturists and winemakers is at an all-time high. GOTAFE is the only TAFE in Victoria offering diplomas in Viticulture (AHC51519) and Wine Technology (10614NAT), both of which are delivered part-time and mostly online, making them an ideal fit for those wanting to learn while working. Winemaker and vineyard manager Mark McNamara, who recently completed his Diploma of Viticulture, knows just how important it is to understand what farming practices assist in producing good wine. Four years ago, Mark and his wife Kirralee purchased what is now a boutique winery in Coal River Valley, Tasmania. Mark realised he wanted to further explore his passion for all things wine. “The GOTAFE course really helped me understand what managing the vineyard would require, and filled in some technical gaps in my knowledge,” Mark said. “I certainly found the practical components of the course very useful.” From grape production to soil and crop management, Mark knew he was equipping himself with the right knowledge and by the end, felt that he got a lot out of the course. “It was challenging — but that was what I needed,” he said. With Mark experiencing “a lot of interest” in the Tasmanian wine industry, he reminisces fondly on the knowledge he has acquired through a range of educational activities, be it lab work or visiting local vineyards. Brewed with nature A lot goes into making a great tasting beer. It takes the right ingredients delicately balanced together to produce a great taste. It takes experience and a team of brewmasters who are dedicated to the craft of beer. It takes an understanding of what people want when they crack one open on a warm summer night, a weekend spent catching up with good friends, or at the end of a long hike. Prickly Moses thinks it takes all of the above, but Otway magic, aka known as Mother Nature, is the key. The independent brewery is home to Prickly Moses handcrafted beers and Forbidden Fruit ciders. Great beer comes from good water, and Prickly Moses sources the best using pure rainwater from the lush Otway rainforests.

Leaving a sustainable, responsible footprint on the environment underpins everything Prickly Moses does, which is why they have implemented even more green initiative at the brewery to lessen their footprint. Solar electricity is used to supplement the use of grid electricity and spent grain is donated to local farmers who use it as animal fodder. Responsibly sourced, high quality ingredients are used to create flavour profiles and aromas that invigorate the senses and leave taste buds begging for more. Prickly Moses is proudly independent, proudly Australian made, and proud to continue exploring and creating the most delicious beers around from the finest ingredients with the best environmental practices in the industry. Help for COVID recovery Applications are open for the new Rebuilding Regional Communities Program, giving local businesses and community groups a chance to share in $5.7 million. Grants are available for a range of grassroots, communityled initiatives that will help communities bounce back by strengthening social connections, supporting jobs, and creating economic opportunities. Federal Member for Nicholls Damian Drum said the funding would deliver a much-needed boost for local businesses, communities and towns hit hard by the pandemic. “Access to this funding will help local groups restart activities and

maintain social support networks in our regional towns as they recover from recent setbacks,” Mr Drum said. “I look forward to working with local groups to help secure the funding they need to bounce back strongly and deliver for locals as we recover from the pandemic.” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Barnaby Joyce, said the Nationals in government were continuing to

stand behind regional Australia. “We have a strong track record of investing in initiatives and projects that create jobs and make our regions stronger, both economically and socially, and through this new funding we’re building on that,” Mr Joyce said. “We know that small grants can have a big impact on regional communities and this $5.7 million in further funding will help drive the recovery of our regions.” The Federal Government is partnering with the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal to deliver the Rebuilding Regional Communities Program.

Funding will be available from two streams to support regional initiatives. The Micro Projects stream will provide small grants of up to $10,000 for regional communities with fewer than 50,000 people to help sustain local organisations and their work. The COVID Recovery stream will provide up to $50,000 for larger projects that will enhance the recovery of communities affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information and to apply, please visit frrr.org.au/ funding/place/src-rebuilding-ruralcommunities/

Family business supports farmers This year will see John Sanderson Machinery celebrate a decade of attending the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo. Based in Nagambie, the family owned and operated business has been servicing the north-central Victoria region for the past 30 years, with three generations of Sandersons supporting farmers with all their machinery needs. “We keep coming back because the expo allows us to get out there and show the people what we have to offer,” Damian Sanderson said. “If we get a few sales on the day, that’s great. But the expo is not just about one day, it’s about what it can bring us over the next 12 months. “We’re there to display our products John Sanderson Machinery will showcase its range of equipment, including the Massey Ferguson GC1725 compact tractor. for the customer, whether that be hobby farmers or everyday “We will try and show as much “We hope to have something for equipped to perform any task farmers, and to provide them necessary. equipment as possible, but due to everyone.” with a chance to inspect equipment COVID, our supply has been put back Thirty years of experience allows the that might be helpful on their Sanderson Machinery stocks by at least 12 months,” he said. staff to provide expert knowledge property.” a range of world class brands, and service, ensuring all their “We’ll have tractors, Massey Ferguson from Iseki, Massey Ferguson, This year, due to supply issues, customers’ business needs, and tractors, Fendt tractors, Kioti, a Hardi and Kverneland, ensuring Sanderson Machinery is unable to future needs, are met. couple of sprayers, basically what we that every farm — whether guarantee what machinery will be can get there. Securing Victoria’s freight future Inland Rail is a nation-building project that will transform how goods are moved around Australia, generating opportunities for our regions and our economy, now and into the future. The 1700 km freight line will connect Melbourne and Brisbane, via regional Victoria, NSW and Queensland. In Victoria, the Tottenham to Albury section of Inland Rail involves upgrading 305 km of existing rail corridor between metropolitan Melbourne and the Victoria-NSW border at Albury-Wodonga. This project will see modifications to existing structures and increased clearances along the rail corridor to provide sufficient height and width to support the safe running of doublestacked freight trains. Modifications will be carried out at sites in Wandong, Broadford, Tallarook, Seymour, Euroa, Benalla, Glenrowan, Wangaratta and Barnawartha North. The Victorian section is currently at various stages of design across these sites, with construction scheduled to begin at the first site in Wangaratta later this year. Australian Rail Track Corporation is committed to working with all communities along the rail alignment and attending events like the Seymour Alternative

The Tottenham to Albury section of Inland Rail.

A double-stacked freight train. Farming Expo provides a fantastic opportunity to talk about the project with local communities and hear their views. As Inland Rail continues to take shape, ARTC is looking for every opportunity

to involve local people and businesses in the project and maximise economic and social benefits for regional communities. With shopfront locations at Benalla, Euroa and Wangaratta, community

members are encouraged to keep the conversations going by visiting the ARTC teams. To stay connected, visit inlandrail.artc.com.au/T2A or visit our site E36.

Highlanders are still all the rage If you want a Highlander, get in line. Demand for the luscious Scottish cow is through the roof and this extends to the polled (no horns) variety. Julia Webster runs the Mayfield Poll Highland Cattle stud outside Ballarat. She said demand for the polled Highlanders had been amazing. “Not just for me, but every member of our society has many on their waiting lists,” Julia said. “The society is growing in leaps and bounds far exceeding our expectations. If only we all had lots to sell.” The Poll Highland Cattle Society started in 2015 after breeders found some buyers were intimidated by the horns. Polled cattle are also more economical when steers are being

raised for slaughter as they fit abattoir safety standards. On top of all that demand, breeders are also expanding into miniature Highlanders. “I have started a new line this year to also breed some miniature Highlanders,” Julia said. How mini? Anything under 42 inches (one metre) to the top of the hip bone is classed as ‘miniature’. The miniatures could be the new face of the traditional beef breed. For years hobby farmers have been flocking to the red-heads without realising how truly big the breed grows. Julia will be at the expo to talk all things Highlander at site Cattle 5.

The traditional horned, large Highlander can sometimes be too much cow for newbies. Stud breeders are busy creating a polled and minimised offshoot.

Living off the grid is easy

Off-Grid Energy Australia is back at the expo for the eighth year running, to provide expert advice on battery storage and power independence. The award-winning company has specialised in designing and installing off-grid power systems since it was founded in 2011 and has installed more than 1000 off-grid systems. Victorian manager and Clean Energy Council accredited designer Aaron Lewtas said that by sticking with what they did best — off-grid battery systems — the team had honed a unique and expert knowledge base over many years. “There’s a big difference between installing a standard

solar system and designing a robust and reliable off-grid system, which provides an essential service — power to your home,” Aaron said. The business offers 24/7 aftersales tech support to its customers, including many local organisations — Bluetongue Berries, The Mill Castlemaine and the Australian Defence Force. “We know what it takes to provide hassle-free independent power, and the ongoing commitment that requires,” Aaron said.

Be safe, think first The only time most people think about energy safety is when something goes wrong. But being alert to potential dangers can save lives and property, says Energy Safe Victoria commissioner Marnie Williams.

“We don’t get in our car and drive like maniacs because we know it’s dangerous. We don’t go to work and do stupid things because we know everyone deserves to get home from work safe and sound,’ Ms Williams said. “The same is true every time we come into contact with gas or electricity. We need to be aware of real dangers, and act appropriately.” She said there were far too many ways people could behave unsafely with energy, and the potential outcomes could be disastrous — but everyone can choose to act safely. “Everyone knows about steering clear of potentially deadly powerlines. We must be constantly aware of them when operating large machinery — Look Up And Live! — and only use professional arborists to keep trees near powerlines properly pruned, too. Reducing bushfire risk is everyone’s responsibility. “There are many things we can all do to be safer around electricity and gas. We should only ever use a licensed electrician for any electrical job at home or at work, even the little jobs; regularly service solar panels or other renewable energy installations; get our gas heaters serviced every couple of years and test the connections on our barbecues for

gas leaks with soapy water; and always ‘dial before you dig’.” Ms Williams said everyone should get to know the Energy Safe Victoria website and visit it often. “Our website is packed with helpful information including our latest energy safety campaigns, and useful resources. And you can follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn too. “Most of all I want to say to people ‘Stop, and think, before you do anything. Don’t cut corners and end up a statistic. Help us to keep you, your family and your everyone around you safe, every day’.” Energy Safe Victoria is the state’s safety regulator for electricity, gas and pipelines. It is also responsible for licensing and registering electricians, and educating the community about energy safety. Visit site L22.

The Isuzu and Iveco dealership considers itself a ‘one-stop truck stop’ and offers sales, service and spares for any make or model. You can buy a second-hand truck and drive back months later looking for a paint and panel repair or quick and easy finance options. The Shepparton dealership also has a range of ready-to-go-stock for those of you in a hurry. Options include tipper tray trucks, fridge trucks, water trucks, prime

movers, vans and the Isuzu N series, the most fuel-efficient Isuzu truck yet. The dealership will even drive new trucks out to busy clients so they can test drive without having to venture far from their workplace. There is also a large used truck range, with small fridge trucks going for $32,000 and Mitsubishi FK600 Fighters with Tadano crane attached on the market for $112,500.

Northeast Shepparton is part of the Adelaide-based Northeast Auto Group. The group is one of the largest sellers of trucks in South Australia and is expanding into Victoria after collecting a cabinet full of Isuzu excellence awards. It’s also one of the only truck auto groups with an in-house engineering hub, set up to serve loyal customers. “We are renowned for our A+ customer service throughout South Australia and we’re proud to have

Roll out the RAT Barrow RAT Barrow is an Australian invention designed to improve material handling around the home and small farm. ‘RAT’ stands for Ride-on, Articulated, Tipping barrow. Its patent-applied design is a world first, giving the user a safe and stable ride with incredible manoeuvrability, for loads up to 200 kg. Peter Boulton invented the RAT Barrow for his wife Michelle. They own and run a 300-head dairy farm in Gippsland. Peter and Michelle are also horse enthusiasts, spending a lot of time feeding horses — carrying buckets and pushing wheelbarrows. Their property also has a large garden requiring constant maintenance, and the homestead has two wood fires that are the only heating. The RAT Barrow’s frame is fully galvanised with UV stabilised poly tub and guards, which are completed with stainless steel fittings that mean a RAT Barrow will handle all the elements and last a lifetime. RAT Barrow’s best feature is its simplicity. The key-start Briggs and Stratton engine with automatic choke and fixed throttle means a quick start every time — even on frosty mornings. Tipping large loads is made easy by the balanced load, free-tip design. Taking lawn clippings, horse manure

Lighten the load with a RAT Barrow. or garden prunings from A to B has never been easier. And the RAT Barrow has no problem with heavier loads such as firewood, soil or sand and feed bags. A sturdy tow hitch allows a RAT Barrow-designed trailer to be attached which also tips, doubling carrying capacity.

The RAT Barrow’s frame is sturdy, built to handle the elements and last a lifetime. In 2013 the RAT Barrow was awarded the Bendigo Invention Award for Agriculture and Environmental Sustainability and in 2014 the Commonwealth Bank Award for Innovation in Agriculture. Peter also pitched the RAT Barrow on Shark Tank in 2018. Peter’s vision was to take RAT Barrow to the people of Australia

and hopefully the world. And since he wasn’t able to do it from his shed on his farm he has entrusted AgBoss with the design. AgBoss will now manufacture the barrows in Albury and distribute them Australia-wide. Try RAT Barrow for yourself at the AgBoss site L5.

Driving into the future Seymour and Kilmore Toyota are a mainstay at the Seymour expo, but this year they’re driving in with some futuristic news.

The sister dealerships are the first in Australia to be KINTO Rent dealers. KINTO Rent allows customers to book and drive a Toyota from one hour to one year. At Kilmore Toyota, a HiAce van is currently available at $14.30/hour ($99/day) while the HiLux goes for $18.20/hour ($126/day). Dealer principal Adam Dove said KINTO was the latest development in Toyota’s transition to a “mobility company” and comes with no membership fees. “You access the vehicles completely contactless through the KINTO app with no membership fees,” Adam said. “Weekly rates are available from just $294 with a lower per kilometre rate of 18 cents.” Also making news is the new age LandCruiser 300 series. The 300 series is the replacement for the 15-year-old 200 series and is powered by a brand new 3.3-litre twin-turbo diesel engine, driving all four wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission. The wide range of Toyota SUVs.

Adam said the 300 was the “most

The automotive industry is still experiencing long production delays for new vehicles. “Our waitlist is approximately four times larger than usual but some models are fairing quite well with only a one- to two-month wait,” Adam said. Fellow Dove Automotive businesses 4 x 4 Extras Kilmore and Kilmore LDV help complete the package in Kilmore. Kilmore LDV specialises in affordable work and small freight vehicles, while 4 x 4 Extras Kilmore fits bullbars, long-range fuel tanks and driving lights all day long. Adam Coogan from 4 x 4 Extras Kilmore said most people used the shop to do GVM upgrades and raise the weight their vehicle can safely carry. “We’ve just set up an online store so people can order the little things which don’t need to be fitted in the shop,” Adam said. “I’d say our most popular product at the moment is the 270 degree awning. Ironman just released a new one which is well priced. We’ve done a lot of testing on our demo vehicles and it stands up.” Kilmore LDV sales manager James Farley said people often don’t know what LDV vehicles are. “I was talking to someone at GoFish Nagambie recently and he wished he’d known about them back when he was buying a ute,” James said. “LDV offer good, tough, work utes and vans. They are really affordable for the farmers and

young tradies out there.” LDV was formed when two European truck companies, Leyland and DAF, were merged. “The ute just had an engine upgrade, so it’s now got as much power as its competition for twothirds of the price,” James said. “The vans are value for money. You don’t want to be spending $70,000 on a car you’re going to run into the ground.” An LDV ute at the lowest spec is $36,000 drive away — and it’s still a 4 x 4 diesel dual cab. The heavy commercial vans come in a range of wheel bases and cabs starting at $34,000 drive away. The LDV Deliver 9 Van comes with Hill Stop to hold the vehicle on hill starts, storage under the cabin seats to help the front ‘doubled as your office’, an easy sliding side door and rear doors which open 180 degrees with a low rear step for easy loading of heavy items. Illuminated LED lighting in the load compartment helps with early morning starts and nighttime work. Visit site T3.

GuardnGrow is an Australian owned family business committed to sourcing and supplying quality coconut fibre products. Coconut fibre is 100% natural and environmentally friendly. Here at GuardnGrow, we are all about promoting healthy growth! We love our garden, it is our special place to relax & unwind, but the Aussie climate can be harsh. We spend so much time mulching our new plants and trees to help them get off to the best start only to have mother nature undo all of our hard work. We knew that there had to be a better option to guard our trees and plants against the ongoing issue of weeds, harsh weather conditions, wind, dust, extreme heat, winter frosts and low rainfall.

Our search led us to the GuardnGrow weed mat, a simple and effective way to get the best from our plants. This is our first year at the Seymour Expo, so come and say hello at site C6 we look forward to showing you our range of mats and pots.

Weatherboards without the fuss Everyone loves the look of a freshly painted weatherboard home.

and being particularly renowned for its performance benefits, uPVC is the perfect lightweight external cladding material.

Whether it’s a traditional or modern look, you can achieve it with Formplex weatherboards. Formplex has the perfect solution for you to enjoy your weatherboard home by using its maintenance-free weatherboard. Since 1981, Formplex has been providing Australian homes with maintenance-free uPVC weatherboards. There is an ever-increasing desire for weatherboard facades in house design, however the constant maintenance required makes it unappealing, not to mention the significant costs involved in preserving a timber home. Whether you’re building a new home, refurbishing a non-brick home, adding an extension, or just wanting to enhance the street appeal of your existing home, Formplex offers an Australian-made weatherboard to withstand Australia’s harsh climate while keeping the iconic look of a timber weatherboard that adapts to modern living needs. Fast becoming a building material widely accepted throughout the world,

uPVC is also known for providing the highest level of thermal comfort, for its insulation properties and for being extremely durable.

56

The colour of external cladding influences its capacity to absorb or reflect heat. In most climates, it is preferable to use lighter colours or reflective finishes. Formplex’s palette is aesthetically pleasing and holds the UV stability throughout its life expectancy. You can also add the perfect contrast colour to ensure your home is unique and represents you by using colour on the non-weatherboard elements of the home or using contrasting trim work to set off the main colour. Your colour design is only limited by your imagination. Formplex’s range of uPVC weatherboards will help insulate your home, saving energy costs over time. The primary roles of cladding are to control the infiltration of weather elements and the egress of water vapour while providing a durable, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

‘Seymour Alternative Farming Expo’, April, 2022

Formplex has the perfect solution to enjoy your weatherboard home by using its maintenance-free weatherboard. Secondary roles can include sound and thermal insulation, fire resistance and the capacity for cleaning in dusty, polluted environments. Formplex weatherboards are perfect for renovating tired non-brick homes into a freshly painted, weatherboardclad abode. They also feature perfectly where a multi-facade look is desired, with stone feature columns or base wall or combined with a render facade.

Being a lightweight building board, Formplex boards are perfect for upper storey construction where the owner/builder is seeking a lightweight option for their project that is not only maintenance-free but will also meet their building costs on the substructure. Formplex has a building department dedicated to working with home builders and can quote directly from your plans. See us at site C19A.

Your partner in water trading If you’re confused about the water trading industry (and who isn’t?), Water Partners could be the stand for you at the Seymour expo. Previously known as Waterpool, the Kyabram-based water trading facilitator is using the name change to make its role in the water industry crystal clear. “Our rebrand is the biggest news of the year,” a Water Partners spokesperson said. “We’ve been known as Waterpool since 2012. However, we feel Water Partners better describes our focus because we partner with our members and our community.” Water Partners is the only not-forprofit trading facilitator in Australia. The company is members-based and effectively owned by the community — it’s also free to join. “We are educators, not just water traders,” the company said. “We cover all sizes of water traders from the local farmer to corporations.” Water trading isn’t always a big corporate game — in fact, it can often be a retired farmer’s game. Century of customer service Mawsons Concrete has set the benchmark for concreting for more than a century across the Murray Valley. Since its founding in 1912, it has grown to 40 concrete plants, 16 quarries and seven landscaping centres servicing customers from South Australia, NSW and Victoria. This year Mawsons will return to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo for the third time, showcasing concrete and rocks. “We are returning this year to the Seymour expo, opting to not travel to the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show,” Rowan McConchie said. “Most of our operations are in the area, so it made sense to go to Seymour instead of Melbourne. “Out of all the expos that we go to, Seymour has been our most successful which is why we wanted to return.” This year, Mawsons will be showcasing its crushed rock, decorative aggregates and river pebbles from the area, providing a local touch to its operations, as well as having a display of exposed concrete for those who are thinking of doing some landscaping around their home.

Mawsons is back at the expo for a third year, showcasing crushed rock, decorative aggregates and river pebbles. “We hope that we will have people who will come by who are thinking of putting in a new driveway or are looking at doing some concrete at their home, and choose to use our

product,” Rowan said. “We get a lot of people who come and tell us that they had no idea we had so many quarries, or that they had no idea where they could

buy our concrete, and so this expo will hopefully give us some great exposure, and maybe make a few sales too.” See us at site EB11

Shape your future in agriculture As the world’s population grows, the role of the agricultural sector will become even more prominent. There is significant demand for workers capable of meeting the challenges in this essential sector. As the world confronts climate change and food shortages, 2022 is the perfect time to explore a career path in the agricultural sector. Food and fabrics, paper and construction materials — these are all products of agricultural efforts. From cropping and sheep farming to beef and pork production and native fish farming, students gain the knowledge required for a successful career in the agricultural sector through their studies with GOTAFE. With hands-on learning opportunities in a real production environment at the GOTAFE campus farm, students learn all they need to equip themselves for a successful career in the agriculture industry. Jorja Daniel completed a Certificate III in Agriculture (Dairy) in 2019 and looks back fondly on the experience of

studying with GOTAFE. “Whether it was one little thing or one big thing, I always learned something … and my boss and my manager love it when I get back to work and put it into practice,” Jorja said. “To get in there (GOTAFE) and do the bookwork, and then the next day go back to work and be able to put what you have just done into practice.” From fencing to calf rearing and animal health, Jorja finished her time with GOTAFE feeling well-prepared for whatever the agriculture industry threw her way. During their studies with GOTAFE, students learn to use technology to cultivate and take care of food, and this plays an essential role in the way we produce, distribute and ensure everybody has access to food locally and globally. GOTAFE currently offers a Certificate II, III and IV in Agriculture, which lead to various career and education paths within the industry. To find out more visit site T73.

Famous bloodline on show Anyone interested in Australian White sheep would do well to learn about Tattykeel. The Aussie White is benefiting from a massive surge in popularity at the moment as the self-shedding meat breed proves itself in the paddock. However, with any breed going through a boom, it’s important to not get swept away and buy an inferior product. Tattykeel is the original stud that created the Australian White sheep in 2011 and its name on a stud animal is a stamp of genuine quality. Balmattum White Sheep Stud at Euroa will bring Tattykeel bloodline sheep to the Seymour expo. The stud has been investing heavily in Tattykeel animals — focusing on quality and easy handling — and offers an affordable gateway into the bloodline. Affordable is the key word here; Tattykeel sold a ram for $165,000 in 2021. Balmattum White Sheep Stud farm manager Richard Boadle said this year the Euroa stud had artificially inseminated 100 ewes to a ram purchased from Tattykeel for $35,000.

Remington and Trump are two highly regarded Tattykeel sires. Richard said there was a lot of interest in Aussie Whites from small farms that didn’t want to muck around with shearers and hobbyists looking to get into the stud ram game. “The popularity (of the breed) comes from the fact the founding stud has been getting exceptional results,” Richard said.

Balmattum White Sheep Stud farm manager Richard Boadle with an Australian White lamb.

“They are fast growing and have good confirmation.” The Australian White sheep was developed by identifying the best genetics from the Poll Dorset and Texel breeds and incorporating it with the Van Rooy and Dorper. After 20 years and about 20,000 embryo transfers later, the results are a hardy sheep, requiring no shearing or crutching and with exceptional growth rates.

“There is a lot of interest in these lambs,” Richard said.

Richard is confident this self-replacing meat sheep breed with its moderate frame, good muscle and intramuscular fat distribution is the way of the future.

“The ram has Remington and Trump in him.”

Balmattum White Sheep Stud will be in the Livestock Hub.
