Founders’ message The Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will stay in Seymour after the event was bought by the McPherson Media Group, publisher of 14 regional newspapers.

As expo founders we wish to express our sincere thanks to the many hundreds of exhibitors and support staff and the many thousands of visitors who have contributed to the event’s success for almost a quarter of a century.

Since 1991 we have worked tirelessly to uncover and promote new and emerging trends and technologies in mainstream and alternative farming. Today, the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo is one of the largest and most popular events of its type in Australia.

We will retain an advisory role to McPherson Media Group in the immediate future to ensure continuity in the organisation and rollout of the expo. This will also mean that the event maintains close contact with exhibitors.

Expo’s future strong Seymour’s Kings Park Recreation Reserve will continue to play host to the three-day Seymour Alternative Farming Expo in years to come, after the event was purchased by the McPherson Media Group.

The founders of the expo, Bev and Colin Stray, will stay on as consultants for the next two years, to ensure the event — which is currently in its 24th year — continues to grow bigger and better with the change of ownership.

Mr Stray said the guarantee that the expo, which was established in Seymour in 1991, would stay in the township was an essential component of the sale.

“We had other offers but it would have left Seymour. We chose McPherson Media to ensure it stays here. We’ll be involved for the next couple of years, helping put it together.

It’s important that it won’t leave Seymour. It’s established now as the Seymour expo,” Mr Stray said.

“I’m passionate about what we’ve achieved in the past 24 years. We’re not dropping the ball and running. We’re staying on to ensure transition of the sale is going to be comfortable.”

The Strays own a farm machinery manufacturing business and saw a need for an event aimed specifically at smaller farms.

“I’d been around the traps and saw a niche opportunity.

There were no agricultural field days exhibiting animals and alternative farming such as ostriches, deer and alpacas,” Mr Stray said.

“We invited about 10 to 20 people to hold a seminar on ostrich farming and it exploded from there. We earmarked it to be the first field day of the year in February and started with about 300 exhibitors. Twenty thousand people came to the event.”

More than two decades later and there are 500 exhibitors from Victoria and interstate and 40 000 visitors expected.

A Girgarre-based camel milking operation will be a new addition to the alternative farming showcase, but the expo has grown to cater more for lifestyle and smaller farms.

McPherson Media Group chief executive officer Damian Trezise said the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo was an exciting opportunity for the company’s events division.

“We’ve been looking at opportunities to expand McPherson’s recently created events division and thought this was a perfect fit with our stable of 14 regional newspapers, and in particular our weekly farming supplement Country News and of course The Telegraph,” Mr Trezise said.

“The McPherson Media Group is one of the few remaining family-owned newspaper groups and it’s very much part of our strategy to be involved in the community and to promote these sorts of events that are so important to a thriving rural economy.”

From chainsaw carving, to country cooking, guitar demonstrations and even dog Frisbee, the 24th annual Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will have unique displays that are sure to impress the 40 000 visitors expected to attend.

Commencing on February 20, the threeday expo will showcase the latest in farm machinery, emerging trends in agriculture and the many delights that a rural lifestyle has to offer, with more than 500 exhibitors set to showcase what they have to offer at one of Australia’s largest farming and rural lifestyle showcases.

“The expo is a proud celebration of what regional Victoria has to offer. While there is a core focus on agriculture, it also embraces a host of attractions and entertainments for all the family including the best in local food and wine, country crafts, chainsaw carving competitions, steam engine exhibits, a reptile show and hundreds of animals,” expo founder Colin Stray said.

The special qualities of camel milk, which has been dubbed “white gold” because

of its reputed health properties, will also be discussed at this year’s expo. See the camels which are part of a milking herd being developed in the Goulburn Valley.

Industry experts will make presentations at the Farm and Rural Lifestyle short talks, Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s .workshops, and the Home Building Lectures.

Key topics including everything from weed control to establishing a farm-stay enterprise, to starting up a beekeeping operation and information on how to create an edible food forest will also be discussed.

Sessions throughout the expo will also touch on organic production enterprises, the benefits of compost and selection of machinery for smallholdings, hints on how to get livestock fencing right, and how to establish a smallholding pig enterprise.

Culinary fare will be a highlight of the expo for foodies, with at least three food courts onsite. Plus there is the Butcher Shop where ‘Bob the Butcher’ will present demonstrations and advice on the best cuts of beef, lamb, pork, chicken and rabbit, while talented local chefs in the Country Kitchen will prepare an array of snacks, mains and desserts.

Scooters offer an easy way to see all expo has to offer Getting around the extensive Seymour Alternative Farming Expo site just got a whole lot easier.

Livestock is set to attract droves of visitors once again at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

Dog Frisbee (above right) is sure to impress expo goers.

Livestock galore, from the regular to the rare Camels, pigs, dogs and an array of cattle breeds are just some of the livestock that you will find at this year’s three-day Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

The event shines a spotlight on some of the more alternative and rare breeds, including British White cattle.

Ravenswood British White cattle breeder Debbie Holmes will travel from Benalla to attend this year’s expo with her distinctive breed, characterised by a brilliant white coat with black points.

“The British White is an ancient breed, with records dating back to about the 1600s in England,” Mrs Holmes said.

“I really enjoy talking to people about the attributes of these lovely animals, such as how quiet they are, and promoting them, as they are a rare breed.”

Among the 13 breeds that will be attending will also be Peter Mangle’s cattle from his Riverview Belgian Blues stud, also in Benalla, which he has bred for 20 years.

Mr Mangle said this mighty breed with the “double muscle” trait often frightened people because of their sheer size, but they were in fact gentle giants.

“They are very quiet cattle, easy to handle and have pleasant natures,” he said.

The Australian Miniature Horse Society will be in attendance for the second year in a row to host its championship horse and pony show on the Sunday of the expo.

Society spokesman Rob Lester expected there to be about 90 competitors on the day.

“We do performance classes as well, it is great to watch the little horses go through the trail and over jumps,” he said.

“It is virtually what the big horses do but in this case they are being led.”

He said the program featured 154 classes, which would take place on the main oval at the expo on Sunday, February 22.

Dog lovers are well catered for, with the Keilor Obedience Dog Training Centre’s fly ball competition, dubbed “drag racing for dogs”, expecting about 150 competitors on Saturday.

Working dog demonstrations will also take place and Four Paws Disc Dogs will also be in attendance, showcasing Canine Disc or “dog Frisbee” on the Sunday of the expo.

For the first time, Riverina Scooters and Mobility will have single and double seat scooters available for hire at the expo.

The business has been offering scooter hire at various field days around the country for many years, including Elmore, Henty, AgQuip, Murrumbateman, Orange and Riverina, as one of its many services.

Director Gordon Moore said the business’ staff gained a lot of satisfaction from helping people to get around the expos, and that feedback was always positive.

“We often have people tell us that they would not have been able to see everything, or that they would not have been able to get all the way around on their legs,” he said.

“It’s a natural attribute to the business as we do all aspects of the mobility industry.”

Riverina Scooters and Mobility operates one of the largest speciality showrooms of mobility equipment and aids in Australia, at Wagga Wagga.

It also supplies the Department of Veterans Affairs and is a member of the Country Care Group.

Available in both single and double seat, all scooters are four-wheelers with powerful four pole motors and large capacity batteries.

Single seat scooters will be available for $60 per hire, which covers the cost for as long as the scooter is needed for the day.

“Many patrons pick up their scooter at opening time, and return it just before closing time,” Mr Moore said.

Scooters can be hired from two locations: Site 388 just inside Gate 3, and Site 270 just inside Gate 1.

Short talks will offer much information From producing the perfect poultry egg to increasing farm profits with worms, the Farm and Rural Lifestyle short talks program will canvass a broad range of topics at this year’s expo.

Key areas will be examined such as how to develop a ‘paddock to plate’ pathway for your enterprise, helpful hints on how to get your livestock fencing right, plus how to establish a smallholding pig enterprise and how to select, purchase and maintain your pigs.

Advice will also be offered on starting up a beekeeping operation and how to create an edible food forest.

Allen and Lizette Snaith have been breeding Belted Galloway cattle at Clonbinane for more than three decades. Using quality stud genetics, the Snaiths have established a successful “paddock to plate” enterprise that has earned them the coveted ABC `Delicious’ award. In this presentation, David will discuss how he has fast-tracked the systems he has developed over the past 15 years and provide an overview of his unique method of growing compost worms in pastures in order to eliminate the need for other forms of fertilisers. She will look particularly at the challenges of growing such a system in dry central Victoria.

Serving up tips for the kitchen Foodies will once again be treated to culinary delights at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, with the popular Butcher Shop and Country Kitchen set to return.

Butcher Bob Dewar, also known as “Bob the Butcher” will be on hand, presenting demonstrations on how to break down carcases and methods to best prepare cuts of meat including lamb, beef, pork, chicken and even rabbit.

With more than half a century of experience in the meat and hospitality industries, Mr Dewar will also be serving up advice on how to get the best value for money when shopping for meat, and the best cooking methods to use.

Working alongside Mr Dewar will be this year’s feature chef Adrian Hensley, from The Exchange, located in the iconic Bendigo Bank building in the heart of Bendigo.

Mr Hensley’s work also includes overseeing the operations of the adjoining café, The Bean Counter, as well as his role as head chef of

Animal nursery set to delight Owners Jason and Susan have dedicated their lives to rescuing and rehoming animals. Among their rescues are bottle-fed lambs and alpacas, kid goats, ducks, guinea pigs, rabbits, border collie working dogs and pup, cats and a cockatoo.

There will be about 50 animals in the animal nursery this year, and there will also be the opportunity for pony rides for young visitors.

Cost to enter the animal nursery or for a pony ride is $6 per person.

A firm believer in sourcing local product, Mr Hensley prides himself on including it in each and every one of his courses, even down to the crockery used, which is from the well-known Bendigo Pottery.

No stranger to the farm, Mr Hensley was born and spent much of his early childhood on a wheat and sheep farm just outside Nhill in western Victoria.

From early beginnings cooking in his family’s country kitchen, he now has more than 15 years of experience in the hospitality industry, having qualified in commercial cookery and patisserie.

Mr Hensley’s wife has coeliac disease, so during the past decade he has developed an extensive knowledge and experience in gluten-free cooking.

Cooking classes and demonstrations will begin from 9 am each day, running through to 5 pm in the Butcher Shop and Country Kitchen.

Milking a niche market A Goulburn Valley couple developing Victoria’s first camel milking herd will take its camels to the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

Chris and Megan Williams are developing a new milking industry in the heart of the traditional dairy industry of Victoria.

The Williams, who have a traditional cow milking background, have a plan to establish a herd of 50 camel milkers, to supply pasteurised milk for drinking.

They have started with three camels on a small farm near Kyabram.

Both have completed a camel handling course and enjoy working with the animals.

“We needed to know about how to handle them, what they can and can’t do, their nature and how to gain their trust,” Megan said.

“They can kick and spit and bite. They can kick from any direction and even from when they are sitting down,” Megan said, but they’ve found that well trained camels, treated with respect, can be handled comfortably.

Megan said camel milk was high in vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and iron with lower lactose levels, which may provide a choice for consumers who can’t tolerate cows’ milk.

Around Australia it sells for up to $25/litre and they expect to be selling the milk for about the same price once their registration

comes through and their small on-farm processing system is refined.

Camel milk is being sold in Queensland and Western Australia, but as far as Megan and Chris can tell, they will be the first to sell it in Victoria.

Their plans developed when the couple met on a remote outback station in the Northern Territory.

Chris grew up in Wales and after moving to Australia took on a job as a station hand at Andado Station.

Chris said camels were everywhere in the desert and were often seen as a pest.

Both were fascinated by the camels they saw in the outback.

“We’ve always had a love for them, and Chris and I had always wanted to do something in a niche way, so we decided to give it a go,” Megan said of the milking idea.

“It’s very different to milking cows but there are also some similarities. It’s not a huge step into the unknown.”

Expert advice for landholders Seymour Agricultural and Pastoral Society’s practical livestock workshops will include veterinary practitioners, livestock industry experts, owners and breeders delivering sessions targeted at smallholding owners considering the establishment of a livestock enterprise.

The practical elements of the program have been designed to provide correct and careful ‘how to’ instruction with a focus on animal welfare and the personal safety of the smallholding owner.

Saluting the beaut Aussie farm ute It isn’t too often that Murray Potbury’s Holden FB 1959 ute makes it out of the garage, but it will see the light of day at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

The Seymour and District Car Club committee member said he liked to keep his prized possession undercover, but would bring it out for the 2015 expo’s inaugural Salute to the Great Aussie Farm Ute display.

“I’ve only had it out twice this year, I don’t normally enter it in car shows, it is mainly just for my own enjoyment,” Mr Potbury said.

“This ute display is a fantastic idea to get the vehicles out for people to see, instead of hiding them away.”

Mr Potbury said his ute was number 52 of the models ever built and everything was original except for the tyres. He attributed its great condition to the fact it never left the original owner’s farm, and was used to exercise horses which would be tied to a device on the back — meaning it never went out of second gear.

Expo founder and consultant Colin Stray said the Aussie ute had been an integral part of developing the farm industry for many decades and the display was a way people

could pay tribute before it became a thing of the past — with Holden and Ford set to shut their factory doors in Australia in years to come.

Mr Stray hopes to see entries from every make and model since 1934, including the traditional manufacturers — Holden, Ford, Valiant, Zephyr, Vanguard and Dodge— right through to today’s popular vehicles.

“This ute display is a fantastic idea to get the vehicles out for people to see, instead of hiding them away.”

Murray Potbury’s prized Holden FB 1959 ute will be part of the Salute to the Great Aussie Farm Ute display at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

The event is being hosted in partnership with Seymour and District Car Club, and club president John Phoenix said the aim was to create a timeline display of the models.

Nothing foul about these mostly-feathered friends They’re loud and strange-looking creatures, but that’s all the more reason to love them.

White Creek’s Enola Halpin has been breeding guineafowl for about 15 years and said they had been a fantastic backyard buddy.

“They are fun and they are relaxing,” she said.

“You go up to the shed and some follow you and some don’t. You can sit there and watch them and they are all different characters — some will talk to you and some will walk away.”

The birds, which have featherless heads, originated in central Africa and Mrs Halpin said she took on a family member’s flock after breeding Light Sussex and Isa Brown chickens among other breeds of birds.

Breeding and caring for the birds is in her blood — her father was a chook breeder and introduced Mrs Halpin to birds when she was two years old.

“Everyone has their own story, and what you will find is most breeders enjoy their birds,” she said.

Mrs Halpin is the president of Seymour Poultry Club, which is a regular exhibitor at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

Last year there were about 200 birds representing 30 to 40 breeds at the club’s annual sale, and this year will promise another wide selection of birds such as

geese, Peking ducks, Wheaten bantams, Modern Game bantams, Silky bantams, Belgian d’Uccle bantams, Wyandottes and more.

There will even be a number of guineafowl for sale, which have also proven to be great security for Mrs Halpin.

The flock of 70 birds will quickly alarm her if there is something troublesome on the family’s sheep farm near Seymour.

“When there is something wrong it’s a very, very loud noise,” she said.

“They are a character and a half.”

The sale will start at 9 am and finish at 5.30 pm each day and the club will provide buyers with boxes at a cost of $2.

“We make sure we have plenty of boxes because we know people impulse buy,” Mrs Halpin said.

She said the club was seeing an increase in numbers the past years and the profit made from the boxes would go towards an extension of the club’s shed.

Carvers handy with their chainsaws For those who aren’t familiar with the practice, chainsaw carving almost sounds like a scene from a horror movie.

However, carver Robby Bast said it was in fact the process of creating unique and beautiful sculptures from timber using a chainsaw.

“Some people call it extreme art and then others call it a sport, but when it comes down to it, carvers are just sculpting timber with something that works a lot quicker than a hammer and chisel,” Mr Bast said.

“People are amazed by the speed and possibilities of what people can do with a chainsaw.”

Most of the 11 carvers at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo will be from Victoria, but two will be making the trip from the United States to show off

their unique skills at the expo.

Last year’s event saw realistic sculptures of deer, people and bears wow spectators.

“It is such a quick art form, we can knock out a sculpture in anywhere from half an hour to a day,” Mr Bast said.

“The calibre of the carvers that attend this expo is of a pretty high standard and it is starting to become more and more popular for the overseas carvers to come over here.”

Chainsaw Carving will take place at site 178 during the three days of the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo, from Friday, February 20 to Sunday, February 22.

Brahman cattle deliver on weight gain Brahman cattle make the best use of consumed fodder in terms of weight gain, according to a central Victorian stud cattle breeder.

Brahman Breeders Association of Australia’s southern branch chair George Mercieca said this effective feed conversion rate made the cattle ideal for use in cross-breeding programs.

“They are the only breed which adds a pound of weight for every pound of food they consume,” Mr Mercieca said.

“So when Brahmans are used in cross-breeding we end up with an animal that develops and grows quickly and requires less food.”

He said that was vital for producers who were looking to gain the best carcase weights and ultimately the best price for their product.

Brahman heifer and bull calves will be on display at the branch’s site at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

Mr Mercieca said the site would be staffed by members eager to offer advice and answer questions

as well as hand out information about the breed.

The association’s southern branch has a membership of 24 and represents breeders from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

Mr Mercieca runs 30 stud breeding cattle on his 69 ha Kyneton property and has successfully cross-bred Brahmans with Hereford, Angus, Lowline, Murray Grey and Simmental cattle.

He said the cattle were hardy, intelligent, docile, excellent mothers and, despite their size, produced small calves, which meant few calving problems.

Victorian farmers have been breeding Brahman cattle since the 1950s and in recent years have achieved great genetic gain by using imported semen from overseas.

Discover the music within farm cast-offs From biscuit tins to oil cans and even a tomahawk, bluesy musical duo Eb ‘n’ Flo can make a stringed instrument and a delightful sound out of just about anything.

The two Queensland musicians, otherwise known as Paul Thorley and Fleur Shelton, will be showcasing their unique talents of playing handmade slide guitars made from recycled materials at this year’s expo.

Their speciality is a single-stringed cigar box guitar known as the diddleybow, and the duo puts the call out for people to bring in farm scraps to their stand at the expo to find out whether they can be used to make music.

“Old television knobs, motorbike and machinery parts, sink strainers and door frames can all be used in making instruments,” Ms Shelton said.

“The more obscure the better, because it will challenge us.”

Mr Thorley said people were often taken aback by the unlikeliness of a cigar box guitar made from bits and pieces making a beautiful sound.

“It is a unique reaction, you see their eyes light up,” he said.

Bluesy musical duo Eb ‘n’ Flo has challenged the public to bring scrap farm materials to its stand at this year’s expo, to see if it can be used to help create a handmade instrument.

15 people, and while Paul and Fleur won’t be making guitars at the expo, they will be playing music throughout the three days and will display instruments so people can see the unique recycled materials used to make them.

“We are happy to sit with anyone who wants to pick our brains,” Ms Shelton said.

“Setting up a stringed instrument is a very unknown formula, it is secretive, but once you understand it you’re on your way.”

Market grows for industrial hemp The benefits of growing hemp for industrial purposes will be discussed at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

There also will be a demonstration of hemp-lime, a mixture of hemp, lime and water used in construction.

The Victorian Government made it legal to grow the plant in 1998 and Industrial Hemp Association of Victoria president Lyn Stephenson said the market was more promising today with more processing plants readily available.

“Victoria was the first state to grow industrial hemp — farmers had a go but there was no market for it. Today … there is a growing market.”

Hemp takes only 14 weeks to mature, produces nearly four times as much raw fibre as an equivalent-sized tree plantation, needs no pesticides, can grow in virtually any climate and soil condition and can rejuvenate poor soils.

At the expo, the Industrial Hemp Association of Victoria will demonstrate the benefits of industrial hemp with hemp-lime used in building construction, and will build a hemp-lime wall.

Ms Stephenson said hemp-lime was fire retardant, pest and mould resistant, and had great thermal benefits.

Hemp belongs to the same plant

family as marijuana, Cannabis sativia, but contains no or very low levels of THC, which has a psychoactive effect if consumed.

Despite Food Standards Australia and New Zealand finding hemp safe to eat and even a health food, the two countries have banned sales of hemp for consumption.

This month Australian and New Zealand food ministers blocked a bid to allow hemp in foods.

Ms Stephenson said the industry was disappointed by the decision because the legalisation of hemp foods would have opened up new market for farmers.

“We were so convinced that it would be approved,” she said.

“They have rejected it but they have agreed to take on further work.”

The ministers concluded there needed to be more work done on labelling and roadside drugs testing, which Ms Stephenson said was “ridiculous” because of the very low levels of THC present in hemp foods.

“We will continue having dialogue with the health ministers and we will continue to have dialogue with the police.”

Steering a continuous course Bob Steer is an icon in the agriculture industry, having been around the traps at Australian field days for more than half a century and travelling internationally to showcase livestock products as well.

The 91-year-old former marine engineer, who lives in Melbourne, founded Steer Manufacturing in 1957 after identifying a gap in the market.

“At the time electric welders were coming onto the market, but there wasn’t much equipment that was readily available,” Mr Steer said.

“There was no cheap equipment for farmers to bend pipe or work steel.”

Mr Steer, who grew up on a farm in Gippsland, worked closely with farmers to develop livestock control equipment in the early days, including cattle yards.

His persistence paid off and after many years of attending farm field days he developed an award-winning product range.

“I built up a huge range of metal equipment and a whole range of that sort of stuff, and a lot of it has been continued on,” he said.

“I did about 25 overseas shows exhibiting the products in the United Kingdom, including royal shows, and events in California and even China.”

Mr Steer said his passion for the industry had remained after all these years, and he credited the farmers for that.

Big wheels keep on turning An Aussie icon of more than a century will be in action at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

The Varcoe windmill was first made in 1911 when Mr T. H. Varcoe purchased the blacksmithing business of a Mr Williams, who already made a windmill called a Truman.

The windmill was named after a Mr Truman, who was an earlier blacksmith and was the Lord Mayor of Mount Gambier.

Mr Varcoe changed the design of the windmill and made what was claimed to be the first direct action oil bath windmill produced in the world, in 1920.

Today, Dean and McCabe Windmills manufacture and repair windmills and look after the Varcoe name behind the facade of the original building in Mount Gambier.

While there are millions of windmills spread across Australia, there are only four or five windmill manufacturing and repair businesses.

Dean and McCabe Windmills manager Kelvin Foote said the decline in windmills was due to the invention of electric and solarpowered water pumps.

But he said the windmill was still a good viable option that promised longevity.

“It’s cost-effective,” Mr Foote said.

“If you look after it will keep going and going.

They just seem to last.”

Reptile display returns An array of snake species including brown, black, tiger, taipan, death adder and python will be part of Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

Herpetologist and RADOA owner Allan Burnett said the focus of the exhibit would be to educate the general public and to create awareness of reptiles, including lizards.

“We will be teaching people about the characteristics and behaviours of reptiles, as well as techniques and tips to help avoid being bitten,” Mr Burnett said.

As a former paramedic, Mr Burnett knows the consequences of snake bites and a thing or two about first aid, and will be teaching the most current applications for what to do in the event of a bite.

Not your run-of-the-mill producer Amber Creek Farm and Sawmill will bring its ethical production philosophy to the 2015 Seymour Alternative Farming Expo for the first time.

Owner Daniel Bright said he and wife Amelia ran the south Gippsland-based business, which focuses on ethical farming and on artisanal, rather than commodity, production of timber.

“We make timber frames for buildings and owner/builders from salvaged logs,” Mr Bright said.

“The material comes from a variety of places such as farmhouses that are being bulldozed.

“We have a strong focus on low embedded energy, very well insulated and unique buildings.”

Mr Bright said he preferred to use recycled materials as they reduced environmental pollution and meant less timber would be cut down unnecessarily from forests.

“The timber would just get burnt or chipped, it would go to waste otherwise,” he said.

He said the history in the material used also made it more intriguing.

“We recently milled timber onsite for a client from their own trees and then took the pieces away to do the joinery,” he said.

“Now they have a building on their site made from trees that grew on their own property.”

Visitors can see examples of timber building frames produced by Amber Creek Farm and Sawmill at the expo, as well other creations such as outdoor furniture pieces.

Mr Bright said Amber Creek Farm and Sawmill worked side by side with North South Homes to provide a complete building service.

Healthy soil means healthy plants Petrik Soil Technology will showcase its soil profile development system with application technology for the first time at this year’s Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.

Agronomist Shane Fitz Gerald said the company employed a biological farming system that focused on soil improvement to yield crop growth and profit, and that agronomists would be on hand to answer growers’ questions at the event.

He said Petrik Soil Technology used a stable soil inoculant called Evergreen, a microbial-based material that works towards improving soil structure and fertility, and which has been used on a number of properties throughout the Seymour region and surrounds with good results.

Mr Fitz Gerald said assessing the soil chemistry was the first step, which then allowed the company to address elements required to provide solutions in rebuilding soil structure, eliminating soil compaction, activating soil fertility and achieving impressive gains in crop growth.

“We use significantly less nitrogen and generally no phosphorus. Our system pays

more attention to trace elements and a holistic approach,” he said.

“One of our longer-term users … in NSW won two wheat awards last year, growing using only 25 per cent of industry standard nitrogen and accessing the soil’s natural phosphorus reserves.”

Mr Fitz Gerald said where it was logistically feasible, the company worked in conjunction with Seymour Organic Fertilisers.

“We can also just boom the product out and we have had some very good results with that in areas near Shepparton, and liquid injection on planters is another option.”

Petrik Soil Technology is offering one free soil test for every 100 ha as a special at the Seymour Alternative Farming Expo.
