As I relax at home in the evening watching my favourite House Rules, Selling Houses Australia and the new Buying Blind — I am enthralled by how trendy children's rooms have become. These tiny little spaces are so much more fun and detailed than decades previously, and it seems a fabulous creative outlet for parent and child.

H

aving many in-laws and friends with children I am often struck by the personalisation and fantastic flair put into their kids’ rooms, with their funky wall decals and customdesigned trinkets. It seems kids’ rooms have never been hotter or more exciting so we have decided to dedicate a whole section of the magazine to this. From page 62 see first-hand what some creative local parents have done with these spaces, including: a modern minimalist bedroom, with bold monochrome detailing and a teepee; a contemporary take on a classic pink bedroom, which is tempered with neutral flourishes and on-trend fabrics; a gender-neutral space, which features more colour and prints than you would expect; and a baby’s nursery with an array of hand-crafted and carefully chosen pieces. A gorgeous Tatura farmhouse is one of our three feature homes in this edition — read from page 7 — which boasts the perfect marriage between the original 1928 California bungalow design and a more rustic 1980s extension. With a charming country kitchen, striking-yetwarm brick feature walls and magnificent gardens established over the decades, the property is something truly special. Raw materials reign supreme in our second feature home, which also boasts a dramatic architectural design and an enviable location overlooking the sparkling Kialla Lakes. With the warmth of timber, stone and marble detailing, and the drama of high ceilings and large windows, this home (from page 29) will impress. It’s all in the finer details with a newlybuilt contemporary abode, which offers a snapshot of on-trend styling. Luxe textured linens, rustic timber tables, black and

stone accessories and succulents aplenty fill the home, which also features polished concrete flooring, Scandinavian wooden details and both matte black and fresh white cabinetry. Indulge in this visual smorgasbord from page 48. An interior designer offers her top tips and styling demonstration on how to achieve that effortless boho-Moroccan look in the home from page 78, and we profile a local craftsperson who specialises in the somewhat bohemian wool-art of macramé from page 80. We look at how innovation and technology are streamlining the home, revolutionising the way we clean, plan and manage it. From page 41 we have a smart homes feature and from page 75 a laundry feature, both of which explore these fascinating topics. Happy reading and I hope you are all staying warm this winter! Jim Ferguson and Em McEachern transformed the long and cold open-plan living area into a space that is warm, inviting and comfortable.

With the kitchen renovated about 10 years ago, it was only simple cosmetic touches like painting the cabinetry needed to soften the space. “The blue was pretty risqué, but it's a nod to the original country with a modern twist,” Em said. “There was an old wood fire burning stove in the kitchen so we've kept the recess and just utilised it.”

F

rom his grandfather, James, who built the home in 1928 to his father, also James, who added an extension in the 1980s, each generation of Jim Ferguson’s family has put their own stamp on The Farmstead Tatura. Its newest chapter has been led by Jim and partner Em McEachern. On a 30 ha farm and surrounded by 2.5 ha of English-inspired gardens, the home is a quintessential reflection of country life. “I remember the first time I drove up

the driveway it reminded me of my family home with the trees, the lawn, that very country vibe,” Em said. “It’s a legacy that we are so lucky to have had passed on. “All of the really established trees were planted by Annie, Jim’s grandmother, and then Jim’s mother Di was just a brilliant gardener — she actually used to have open gardens out here.” Eighteen months ago Jim and Em started renovating, an idea sparked by the desire to share their slice of paradise. » OUR HOME

In the ensuite Jim and Em pulled out the '80s shower recess and trademark brown glass, painted over the original tiles and added a concrete sink and black matte finishes for a luxe touch. “We just came in and painted everything in white and put in some new subway tiles, Jim did all of that — he's really handy,” Em said. “I remember the first time I drove up the driveway it reminded me of my family home with the trees, the lawn, that very country vibe,” Em said.

An old tobacco kiln on the property inspired Em to open a bed and breakfast, but Jim was quick to point out the building was “stuffed” and they instead decided to craft a delightful getaway in their own home. “For us it was recognising we have a beautiful little gem in the area,” she said. Paying respect to the extension built by Jim’s father while brightening up the space, the pair has revived the master bedroom and ensuite, and open-plan lounge, dining and kitchen. Infusing its ’80s vibes with a modern country style inspired by their upbringings on the land, they have tied together the original exposed brick with a natural colour palette and concrete, black matte and leather accents. With layers of French linen the cosy bedroom brings the outside in, with freshly picked flowers gathered from the garden, statement Kara Rosenlund prints and views to the courtyard flooding through the large windows. “We have some incredible Australian trees, some incredible English trees, we have Japanese trees — there’s a real eclectic mix of maple, ginkgo trees,” Em said. “The two beautiful weeping elm trees are a real feature, they provide a canopy during summer and they provide shelter during winter.” When guests arrive, the open-plan space becomes a shared area where Em’s favourite piece, a Grand Design mirror, reflects the greenery just beyond the doorstep. “It was quite a long, cold room but I think we have really opened it all up and it’s warm, it’s inviting and comfortable,” she said. The renovations are about to move into the older part of the home, while Em and Jim continue to rejuvenate the garden and also plan to transform the woolshed into a wedding venue. “There’s so much that we’re still going to do,” she said. “With the older part of the house I think that will be about honouring what’s here in a traditional manner. “That will be a bit more challenging just because it’s horse hair plaster, it’s very old, it’s all original Jarrah floorboards, there’s 10-foot ceilings.”  OUR HOME

Talking real estate

with Kevin Hicks With almost two decades experience in the real estate business, Shepparton local and Kevin Hicks Real Estate director Kevin Hicks is well versed in the intricacies of selling premium residential properties in Shepparton and surrounds. As winter gets underway, Mr Hicks said there’s no time like the present to prepare your premium property for sale.

Why sell my property with Kevin Hicks Real Estate?

focus on high end marketing and images to ensure that the high quality of the property is reflected truly.

As locals ourselves, we have a strong referral base amongst the community who know our ability to sell elite, premium residential properties. We have a reputation for delivering excellent results for vendors and we’re trusted to ensure the confidentiality and confidence of buyers. On many occasions we have conducted private inquiries or inspections early in the morning or late at night to suit prospective buyers’ busy schedule and ensure their identity or interest in a property remains confidential.

What have your past results been like? We’re proud to say that over the last 12 months we’ve had unprecedented results that have exceeded expectations, including elite properties sold in Ford Road, Shepparton North, 89 Maude Street, Shepparton right in the CBD and 1 Scotch Court located in the sought after Grammar Park north of Shepparton.

We rely on historic evidence and our knowledge of the area to set market expectations with vendors and are constantly striving to achieve new ground and new value, especially with the current market shifting favourably and delivering strong results for those selling.

How do you ensure the best results? We elect to utilise the auction system which provides the opportunity to explore the market and buyers’ interest in the property to achieve the best result, without a price tag capping the result for the vendor.

When should I contact an agent? Winter is the perfect time to get started to allow your agent time to prepare for sale with elite properties ideally needing to be presented during the optimum spring selling period to ensure the best possible result is achieved.

We’ve also had the honour of recently selling three properties in one of the most well held streets in the area — Kingfisher Drive, near the Shepparton Golf Club.

We’re currently preparing the iconic 209–211 Fryers Street in Shepparton for sale, with views towards an August or September selling period and auction.

How do you prepare a property for sale?

The property, owned by Bernard and Jill Hayes, has been held for many years and with a truly spectacular location, this elite property will present beautifully in Spring.

We prepare the properties very thoroughly for sale and

hen the garden is dull and dreary, and nothing is blooming outside, bring the colour inside with statement artificial flower arrangements and potted trees. Sabac On High manager Tracy Heyward said native flowers remained on-trend, with most home owners opting for colour schemes that complemented their existing style. Tracy said natural materials, such as rattan and timber, continued to add an organic touch to winter interiors, and were easy to work with as they created a neutral backdrop for bright splashes of colour. “Add some cushions, a print and flowers to your living space for a relatively inexpensive way to add warmth,” she said.

TEXTURE CREATES WARMTH

L

uxurious velvets, chunky knits, sleek leather and soft fur can all add comfort, style and warmth to your winter space. Sel’s Gifts & Décor owner Sel Shemshedin said texture was an important consideration when choosing soft furnishings, such as cushions and throws, to create a cosy and welcoming place to beat the cold. In terms of colour, Sel said there was no one shade or theme dominating this season, instead home-stylers could team blush, navy, gold, leafy green, tan or indigo blue to complement and lift neutral decorator palettes.

uxurious velvets are making a comeback, albeit with a modern twist. On trend prints in grey and mustard can be crafted into stunning heavy drapes and soft, comforting cushions to add warmth in the winter months. Wyndham Décor owner Sue Johnston said block-out curtains and pelmets were the best window coverings to act as insulation on cold and dreary days. “Textured fabrics, cushions and throws all add to the homely, cosy feel that adds warmth to a room,” Sue said.

COLOURS OF WINTER

S

oft pastel hues are making a splash this winter, with dusk, camel and sea mist all the rage as the cold weather sets in. It’s a fresh look for winter, according to Nixon and Maude owner Jo Hanson, who said people were embracing the softer tones this season. “It’s definitely very fresh but also cosy. Velvets are also starting to come through and layering different textures is key,” she said. With lush feather-filled pillows and knit throws adorning arm chairs and couches, those looking for

something with deeper tones will fall in love with bedding trends as linen and velvet come to a fore. “Bed linen is certainly continuing in those deeper tones, but there are always the staples of good old black and white. It’s difficult to go wrong with those,” Jo said. With pops of colour being delivered by luscious greens, including living colour from popular plants like fiddle-leaf figs, and whimsical and bold pieces found in the kids’ section, winter interiors will be far from dull and grey.

BARE ROOT

Season

A popular time of the year in the annual gardening calendar WHAT IS A BARE ROOT PLANT? Bare root plants are deciduous trees or shrubs that have lost their leaves during the cool winter months. At this time, they can be dug from the ground while dormant and sold bare rooted without a pot. WHAT TYPE OF PLANTS CAN I PURCHASE BARE ROOTED? Bare root season is a great time to purchase many varieties of ornamentals, weepers, fruit trees and roses. Some popular varieties include ornamental pears, maples, birches, elms, plane trees, weeping cherries, apples, plums, pears and Iceberg roses, just to name a few! WHY DO DECIDUOUS TREES LOSE THEIR LEAVES? Deciduous trees lose their leaves due to their life cycle, they have a growing season and a dormant season. As temperatures cool, deciduous plants instinctively begin to shut down food production and leaves change colours due to the lack of chlorophyll and drop to the ground. It is during this stage that we are provided with a stunning display of foliage colour during autumn. All leaves are lost during this time, leaving majestic bare branches.

WHY PLANT A DECIDUOUS TREE? Deciduous trees and shrubs add a beautiful element to landscapes and home gardens. They range in variety, and the different sizes, forms and colours add impact and structure to your garden. Deciduous trees are such a wonderful and practical tree as they provide shade in summer and in winter when they lose their leaves, they allow light and glorious winter sun in. There are so many benefits for planting a deciduous tree during the winter months, their bare root form has a smaller root ball providing ease when planting, bare root is more cost-effective and planting at this time of year gives them plenty of time to become established before the hot summer arrives. Please ask the Billabong Garden Complex staff for an information sheet on tips for planting, pruning and caring for your bare root plant. Happy winter gardening. A statement stone-tiled fireplace, which Mitch crafted over a weekend, makes the open-plan space an inviting place for the Wright family — Evie, Mitch, Lottie, Ash, Audrey and Piper — to enjoy during the cooler months.

A

fter spotting a block overlooking Kialla Lakes that was perfect for their growing tribe, Ash and Mitch Wright embarked on a creative challenge: avoiding the conventional in favour of the unique. Within six months the creative couple designed, built and styled their third home

with their trademark style. “I love designing spaces and Mitch loves building spaces — he’s a really great carpenter and tiler,” Ash said. “The kids love the house, they love that Daddy built it.” With a passion for the avant-garde, “owner-building” made it possible for the

family to have an innovative, smart design without the high price tag. For Mitch, it is the painstaking details that make the home. But the co-owner of All in 1 Carpentry and Tiling said it also made the build much more involved. “We wanted to do something different,” Mitch said. » OUR HOME

Always on the lookout for unique features for the home, Mitch said he designed the ensuite (above) and main bathroom (right) around the grey stone bathtubs. “Everyone has a normal white bath and we wanted to do something different,” he said.

“Every component of the build I tried to find something that I didn’t see a lot of. “I’d come here after work and do this, on the weekend, every day for six months I was here. “When it’s your own house you do those things.” From the hexagon-tiled recesses in the bathrooms and the cedar accents outdoors, to the plaster pelmets and the absence of architraves throughout — all are a credit to Mitch’s attention to detail. The result is a sleek home entwining straight lines and the grey-scales of concrete, marble and black matte finishes with the warmth of timber and stone, anchored by the open-plan spaces’ architectural design. High ceilings and large windows create a light and airy space where the family gathers around the feature stone fireplace. “We’re tried to incorporate a lot of natural light into the home,” Ash said. “We have the sheer curtains throughout as well because when you shut them you still get natural light inside. “We love being in here during winter because of the fireplace, it warms the whole living area up.” With four daughters under eight — Piper, Evie, Lottie and Audrey — the master is a place for Ash and Mitch to enjoy some well-deserved rest and relaxation. A crisp monochromatic colour palette fused with timber accents continues to flow from the bedroom to the ensuite. A freestanding stone bathtub makes a statement but it is the simple luxuries — a walk-in rain-head shower, a stone basin and full tiles — that the couple loves. For Ash, it was her four daughters who sparked her passion for interior design. While most of the home remains minimalistic, she has created enchanted havens for the youngest members of the family. Popping with feminine flourishes, each of the three bedrooms has a classic palette of pink and grey fit for a princess. “I love designing little girls’ rooms,” Ash said. “They are the ones that have made me realise what I want to do.”  OUR HOME

For Kialla mum Ash Wright, motorised cabinetry gives her peace of mind. “All of our cabinetry is push open, we don’t have any door handles and they are motorised,” Ash said. “Because we have four kids under eight they try and open everything, every cupboard, and they jam their fingers, it’s just so much easier.”

here is not much you cannot do at the touch of a button — drawing the blinds included. Motorised blinds have become more affordable, according to Bob Ellis of Choices Flooring, Shepparton. Flicking a switch can raise and lower blinds, but Bob said it was simple to take a home to the next level with automation — controlled by a remote or a smart device. “They can automatically go up in the morning, down at night and have a TV mode where they adjust,” Bob said.

ith the architectural design of Mitch and Ash Wright’s Kialla home centred around large windows, Mitch said they added motorised blinds (above) for a smart-home edge. At the push of a button these blinds make it simple to block out the stream of natural sunlight and get a good night’s sleep. For the family of six, retractable blinds throughout the home also means there is not a cord in sight for the children to play with.

oller shutters are the ideal way to regulate interior temperatures, with their insulating properties keeping the home cool in summer and warm in winter, thus reducing energy costs. On Site Fly Screens tradesman Will Colban said the shutters were fitted externally and enhanced home security, helped reduce noise and harmful UV light and, with the availability of a variety of powder-coated finishes, added to a building’s sleek, streamlined look.

Harvey Norman senior salesperson Resh Qemal said the latest robotic vacuums were “very clever” and were now capable of conducting 3D scans of the room. fter searching for a ready-built home that could fit their needs, Alexandra Hanson and Jon Treanor decided to forge their own path and build their own house. With a few things on their ‘must have’ list, it was ultimately the pale grey concrete floor that was the key inspiration for the sleek, minimalistic home. “That’s kind of the one constant,” Jon said. Throughout the home tones of grey and black are juxtaposed with white walls, pops of greenery, natural fibres and tones of Scandinavian wood. Sitting at their stunning dining table — a chequerboard inspired design that brings out varying hues of the intricate timber — the couple reminisced about the experience of making the house their own. After making the move just a few short months ago, bringing together the home has been a process. “The best part is we just get to make it our own,” Alexandra said. “We wanted it to be as modern as possible, we didn’t really have a specific style, and we just wanted to add things we like. » OUR HOME

After months of planning and decision-making, Alexandra Hanson and Jon Treanor have created the perfect Kialla home for them and their dog Morris. Photo: Julie Mercer.

“It’s been the best of both worlds.” The sleek black cabinetry on show in the kitchen and butler’s pantry makes a bold statement in the space, but the decision to incorporate it into the contemporary home did not come easily. “There was a lot of thought; we just didn’t want to pull the trigger,” Jon said. “But we’re so glad we got them, it just helps to break up the white.” The bold matte black cabinetry is referenced in other areas of the home, from

the touches of black in the legs of stools that sit at the kitchen’s island bench, to the master bedroom’s contemporary ceiling fan. While they may have agonised over the cabinetry, not every decision was so hard to come by, with the penny-round mosaics in the ensuite a snap decision. “They were such a last-minute decision, we didn’t know what we wanted and we came across them,” Alexandra said. “We just thought they’d be a little bit of a feature and said ‘we’ll take that’,” Jon said.

From the wooden bench in the study nook to the shelves decorated with tumbling leaves and quirky neon signs, the home achieves a delicate balance between the cooler tones and the warmth delivered by the wood, throws, rugs and cushions. While there are still big plans for the rest of the home, both agree their search for a house that could be truly their own has been well worth it, delivering something bespoke and uniquely them.  OUR HOME

Trendy LITTLE SPACES Children’s bedrooms have never been more popular or more personalised than today. These gorgeous local kids’ and bubs’ rooms begin with a neutral, minimalist backdrop but gain character and colour through clever styling.

Parents Carly and Michael purchased their established home six years ago and, room by room, have set about adding their own style to the place. When it came to updating Jimmy’s

bedroom 12 months ago, Carly embraced the neutral colour palette and introduced blocks of black and white for impact. “I told Jimmy I was going to make his bedroom into a big boy’s room and asked

him what he would like. He said Batman so I ran with it,” Carly said. The room has been designed so that the key pieces — the bed, floor rug and teepee — are the standout features, while decorations such as wall art, a string of silver/grey, black and white lights and a pom-pom garland in similar tones add interest without dominating. “I don’t like too much clutter. Everything in here is removable so as

Jimmy grows and his interests change I can change it up without having to do anything too drastic,” Carly said. A feature wall of black cross decals is a bold statement, softened by comfortable cushions on the bed and in the teepee, and a book case that houses a collection of superhero toys and some favourite and well-read story books. Instagram has been a source of inspiration but it is her mother that Carly

thanks for her interior design style. “Mum takes a lot of pride in her home and when we were children she made sure our bedrooms were really special places where we felt calm and safe,” Carly said. “I’ve done the same thing with my boys’ bedrooms. The personal touches make them feel that this is their space and they feel really important and special every time they go in there.” OUR HOME

GREEN WITH

envy

It was an irresistible pop of bright green that laid the foundation for one-year-old Lacey Grant's bright and funky nursery. STORY ALANA CHRISTENSEN PHOTOGRAPHY LISA NARDELLA P HOTOGRAPHY

A

fter months of searching for the perfect cot, new parents Lisa and Wayne Grant stumbled across the picture-perfect addition to the space. After making the decision to keep the sex of their baby a surprise, designing a colour scheme was a slight predicament for the new parents, and one the cot solved effortlessly. “It was a good neutral colour because we didn’t know what we were having and it was just something bright and different,” Lisa said. “It was a great statement in the room.” When the couple welcomed little Lacey

64

OUR HOME

WINTER 2018

into the world last June, the green cot and accompanying mustard hues were slowly joined by pops of pastel and hot pink. “I had mood boards and got the shelves and things like that and I started with some neutral things before I added in the colour (pink when I knew the sex),” Lisa said. The remainder of the space has stayed neutral with white finishes and raw timber elements tying everything together seamlessly. Despite knowing the key items to include — a cot, change table and nursing chair — Lisa said there was still plenty of

research that went into the space to find the perfect touches. From swapping ideas and photos of items with friends, to scouring online stores for the perfect final touches to the space, there was no element of the nursery that went unconsidered. “The chair was a hard one to find because it has to be practical and still look good and be comfortable, but you can just throw a couple of throws on it and it works (in any room),” Lisa said. “You kind of look around and say ‘I don’t want that, that and that’, so having a colour scheme really helped.”

After beginning with pops of mustard to style the room, pastel and hot pinks were soon introduced into the mix.

PERSONALISED PIECES AND TIMELESS FLAIR

C

lassic styling is in vogue for children’s bedrooms. Quaint knitted toys, interesting wall hangings and prints were all sought-after items by decorators styling children’s bedrooms, as well as family and friends buying gifts, according to Sel’s Gifts & Décor owner Sel Shemshedin. “People seem to be more forward thinking now and are decorating their children’s rooms in such a way that the children can stay in the room longer, and transition to the next age without changing too much,” Sel said.

Bold and unique, this statement green cot was the perfect starting point for the nursery. OUR HOME

NURSERY GOES BACK TO

A bilby cushion and a gift from Nanna inspired an Australiana nursery with vintage vibes for 13-week-old Teddie Caldow. STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHY JESSICA BALL

T

he pillow now sits pride of place in his timber cot, while the cockatoo and gumnut patterned mat provides his favourite spot to play with first-time parents Heidi and Tom Caldow. While she had a strong suspicion they would be welcoming a baby boy, working in medical imaging Heidi was adamant to be kept in suspense. The couple set out to craft a genderneutral nursery incorporating her love of

66

flowers and animals. “I really love bilbies and I saw the cushion and it sort of all went from there,” Heidi said. “I went with the green and yellow because I thought that could sway either way and I left it so I could do things once I knew the gender. “I got a beautiful play mat from my mum for Christmas which was also coincidentally in the greens and yellows which I really, really love and we use that

literally 100 times a day.” Once they fell in love with the statement patterns Heidi and Tom kept the other elements neutral, from the timber furniture to the black and white print that hangs above the cot. “I had five weeks off work before I had Teddie so it was a nice project but a bit of a mad rush at the end,” she said. “There are lots of beautiful Australian prints out at the moment, which I think work well with the gender-neutral theme.”

BANISH WINTER BLUES

T

he winter weather may be dreary and miserable outside but it’s easy to create a vibrant interior for children’s bedrooms. A multitude of bold and colourful soft furnishings can lift a neutral space quickly and inexpensively. Wyndham Décor owner Sue Johnston said custom-made doona covers, cushions and fabric pelmets injected colour and fun with the option of mixing and matching complementary or contrasting tones. Sue said by using delightful patterned and textured wallpapers and fabric-covered canvases, children’s room décor could be taken to the next level.

For a modern twist on a classic feminine colour palette she opted for light hues of grey and pink and added enchanting layers; all the while keeping each room simple and functional with

plenty of open space to play. Each bed makes a statement — a timeless rose gold metal design for Piper and a cosy house-shaped timber bed lit up with lanterns for Evie — and both are dressed in fun printed linen. REINVENTING TRADITIONS

T

raditional pink and blue colour schemes for children’s bedrooms and nurseries are enjoying a resurgence. Sabac On High owner Chris Wilcox said layering textured fabric pieces from the same colour palette — such as cushions, throw rugs and bed linen — could create a luxurious private space for younger members of the family. Chris said whimsical fairy figurines, musical carousels and designer dolls and teddy bears were gaining in popularity for two reasons — they were a delightful addition to the bedroom décor as well as being lasting keepsakes for years to come. Statement pieces, in the form of timber wall signs and metal art, as well as cane storage baskets, add a rustic flavour to a modern space.

Laundries

FOR MODERN

s e l y t s e lif

As our busy modern lives continue to evolve so too do our laundries to accommodate our ever-changing needs. The laundries of today are not only highly organised and efficient, they have extra features to improve washing and drying times, and new technologies allow us to keep track of this from afar.

DO THE LAUNDRY IN STYLE

M

odern laundries are no longer forgotten spaces where dirty clothes wait to be washed and piles of ironing get so high they almost topple over. Instead home owners are designing the space to be both functional and in keeping with the overall style of the home. KitchenWise director Mark Boldiston said a modern trend was to incorporate two colours in the laundry cabinetry, blending tones of grey and white with timber grain doors to add warmth. Pair the cabinetry with flooring to match that of nearby rooms, such as the kitchen or family bathroom, and the laundry will be a stylish hub for completing chores.

LAUNDRY TIME JUST GOT EASIER

T

aking the time to plan your new laundry will result in a workable room that maximises space and storage. KitchenWise director Mark Boldiston said important considerations included: • Choose your appliances carefully; a front-load washing machine allows for more bench space while a wallmounted dryer can impact the room

for overhead cabinetry. • Built-in drawers for soiled linen enable streamlined storage of dirty clothes. • A space-saving, in-built ironing centre is easy to pull out, set up, use and pack away. • Task lighting under the overhead cabinetry improves the use of the

space at night. • Broom cabinets can be customised to store the vacuum cleaner, bulky goods and cleaning items neatly. • A rail underneath overhead cabinetry is a convenient place to hang freshlyironed clothing before being put away.

IT'S GETTING HOT IN HERE

T

here’s nothing worse than stepping onto ice-cold tiles in the middle of winter, and it’s driving people to take advantage of underfloor heating, according to Beaumont Tiles sales assistant Maddison Courtney. Able to be controlled by a thermostat in the wall, Maddison said the underfloor heating could be easily installed in everything from your laundry’s drying cabinet to a shower, and could be run for just a few cents an hour.

WINTER WARMERS

F

rom free-standing to wall-fixed, heated towel rails are continuing to grow in popularity. Beaumont Tiles sales assistant Maddison Courtney said they were perfect for the winter months, with running costs per hour from as low as one cent. Offering the convenience of a warm towel as soon as you get out of a shower or bath, or simply to speed up the drying process in your laundry, heated towel rails help to add a warm touch of luxury to any space.

WASHING GOES HIGH-TECH

W

ith built-in technology to track energy consumption, diagnose and troubleshoot issues, and with downloadable software to add new wash cycles, the latest washing machines do a lot more than just clean clothes. Smarter, quieter and packed with features, Harvey Norman senior salesperson Resh Qemal said your smartphone could be used to remotely start or stop the cycle and keep track of it.

DRYING TIME

D

rying cabinets are becoming increasingly popular as time-poor families aim to streamline daily household chores. KitchenWise director Mark Boldiston said drying cabinets were tall linen or broom-style cupboards, fitted with a vent from the ducted home heating system and with ventilation slats on the door to allow the air to circulate. A single rail or series of rails allows clothes to dry when the heating is operational. Mark said it was important to factor in the additional vent required for the drying cupboard, when planning the heating system.

OUR HOME

WINTER 2018

anderlust-inspired Moroccan and bohemian interiors tell tales of faraway places. With a rich tapestry of colour, pattern and texture, this nomadic trend creates intimate and inviting spaces. While items collected over time from world travels reflect their origin, this eclectic style is also achievable closer to home. It is all in the details, and Paula Dohrman of Walls & Windows said hand-crafted and well-loved timber and rattan furniture were key to creating warmth and texture. Think layers of draped hand-loomed, crochet and macramé textiles — fringed throws, tassels and cushions in abundance. Add shades of blue and green of the ocean and gold and orange desert tones, intricate tribal and traditional patterns — paisley, mandalas — and a pop of greenery all lit up with lanterns. 

A creative nod TO NOSTALGIA

Karla Granger is finding the raw beauty in imperfection one knot at a time. STORY JESSICA BALL PHOTOGRAPHY HOLLY DANIEL

I

n a game of trial and error, the Shepparton woman started teaching herself a bygone craft — macramé — watching Instagram and YouTube videos 18 months ago. “I was just having a go and seeing what would happen,” Karla said. “My first pieces aren’t the best looking but that’s okay. It’s just evolved from there.” From humble beginnings trying her hand at macramé, weaving and even spinning, things began to untangle and Karla lunched Fibre Kreations from her cosy home studio. 80

Each tactile piece is created organically — handmade and radiating warmth. “I just start going and it just kind of happens,” she said. “They aren’t perfect pieces, the measurements aren’t perfect and I don’t want them to be. I think it’s nice to be a bit more rustic and to know that someone has spent a lot of time doing it.” Karla makes a conscious effort to use only natural and locally sourced materials. Hung on either natural timber or copper, she combines neutral fibres from the

common (like wool, cotton and silk) to the more unusual (like mohair, coconut and banana leaf) with a subtle pop of colour. “I like to make sure everything is natural fibre, I don’t like to use anything that is synthetic or acrylic,” she said. “I try to make sure that if it’s not local, it’s at least Australian. “I’ve tried solar dyeing, dyeing wool and cotton so you can get unique different colours using avocado skin and onions and stuff like that.” Karla is in the process of launching an Etsy store to sell her creations. 
