Welcome The Our Home team is excited to share two stunning home renovations this issue.

I am sure you will love the penchant for the past with a modern edge behind the blue door of our cover story.

Carrie Donaldson and husband Luis Casanova spent more than a year renovating this period home in Shepparton.

And while the charm and character of the almost-century old Edwardian home have been honoured, the couple has cleverly incorporated a vintage industrial edge.

Meanwhile, a 1970s-style brick home at Kirwans Bridge has become the base of an idyllic lifestyle for Tony and Nedra Hammond.

The Hammonds have used indigenous timber and local stone throughout their home and property on the banks of a lagoon of the Goulburn River.

Then there is Sue and Ang Mancini’s Tatura home, which was purposebuilt to create a space with aesthetic appeal but was functional for Sue’s mobility in her wheelchair.

Their retreat is also a creative space for Sue’s gorgeous pastels.

Our feature garden takes us to a sprawling country estate near Ruffy in the Strathbogie Ranges.

The overgrown garden at Strathearn has been restored to its former glory by Phil and Kelly Whitten.

Not only is the garden glorious, it also has an intriguing link to Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Cecil Maygar, one of the first recipients of Australia’s highest military honour — the Victoria Cross.

EAGER TO ESCAPE a hectic city life, a young family has established an idyllic home and business lifestyle at Kirwans Bridge on the banks of a still lagoon of the Goulburn River.

Tony and Nedra Hammond have used a blend of indigenous timbers, hewn stone and natural sandstone to renovate their home that features magnificent views of river wetlands filled with a mass of blooming water lilies and abundant bird life.

A majestic ironbark tree towers over the back of the home, shading the paved outdoor area, and timber from locally felled ironbark — the hardest of all Australian hardwoods — has been used extensively in the renovation.

Since the Hammonds bought the 12 ha property 15 years ago, the 1970s-style brick home, with a clutch of small rooms and mission brown aluminium windows, has undergone a partial transformation.

Milled ironbark now frames expansive glass windows, positioned to capture the spectacular river views and neutral render covers the dull brick exterior, perfectly complementing the supporting verandah pillars built from locally sourced stone.

Large sandstone pavers line the pathways around the home that widen to form a raised outdoor area with an open pergola — crafted out of re-claimed jarrah timber from a decommissioned Sydney wharf — and ornamental vines.

The original lining boards of the verandah ceilings have been retained and their weathered appearance adds to the rustic charm.

Nedra said they were planning a large-scale extension of the home that would triple its size and incorporate more living space, a games room, library and bedrooms.

In the meantime internal works have included demolishing walls and creating an open family area with a double-sided fireplace, constructed from natural stone and topped with a slab timber mantel that is a remnant from repair works at nearby Kirwans Bridge.

Tony, who was schooled in Shepparton, comes from a long-line of farmers and timber workers and channelled those skills to mill the timber needed for the renovation. >>> 12

The entry to the Hammonds’ home resembles an old woodheap with carefully placed timber spelling out the name Hide and Seek.

Winding stone steps lead down a slope right to the water’s edge. Part way down is a circular “conversation pit” complete with seating and a brick fireplace.

“That tree would have to be 120 years old now,” Tony said.

The tree was the inspiration for the name of their boutique winery Hide and Seek and the design of the labels for their shiraz and chardonnay.

The Hammonds and their children, Finn, 13 and Brielle, 9, are now sharing their piece of paradise with other families seeking a quintessential Australian holiday by the river following the opening of a two-storey accommodation facility late last year.

Nedra’s clever designs include a neutral colour scheme that allows the mix of timbers to shine.

Greybox timber posts form the external verandah and balcony structures and vertical weatherboards appear to add further height to the already impressive building.

Inside the same timber has been fashioned into light fittings and cabinet door handles while a 2.4 m long slab of red gum is a perfect place to gather in the upstairs kitchen.

“The tree I cut this slab from was 2.7 m in diameter; I had to use a ladder to climb onto the felled trunk. It’s probably the largest tree I’ve milled,” Tony said.

An old timber work bench with a primitive vice and deep saw cuts is a feature piece in the living area and Tony estimates his ancestors used the bench 150 years ago.

Since opening the accommodation venue Tony and Nedra have been overwhelmed by the positive comments from visitors who marvel that their usually technology focused children leave their mobile phones and tablets inside and embrace the country lifestyle.

“Growing up I said I would never go to Melbourne and I did, then I said I’d never leave and I did. Now I can’t imagine living anywhere else,” Tony said. v

CHARM, CHARACTER AND HISTORY. It was these alluring attributes that attracted Carrie Donaldson to make this almost century-old Edwardian home her family’s next renovation project.

Pieces of the past are all around, from the old-fashioned “hair and straw” plaster to the weathered pine floorboards and the leadlight windows.

“Older homes have stories to tell; if the walls could only talk about the families that have lived here before and the life the home has had,” Carrie said.

Black tar around the edges of the floor was a tell-tale sign that helped date the home; a discovery which was made after ripping up the carpets.

“In period homes it was pretty common for them to just put a rug in the middle of the room and then they varnished or painted around them,” Carrie said. >>> 21

Carrie’s eclectic ‘vintage industrial’ style is most evident in the master bedroom.

“I picked up the first vintage trunk at a market in London. I was pregnant with my son, Riley, and my husband and I were travelling, but preparing to move back to Australia — we actually shipped some of our stuff back in this. I bought the second trunk at an auction in Melbourne, I got them separately but they are the same.”

Carrie said she white-washed the floorboards that were hidden underneath, preferring a rustic effect rather than the ‘yellow’ look of polished floorboards.

“I wanted it to look fairly rustic, I didn’t want the perfect high-gloss finish,” she said.

“I love the fact that the boards have a life and it doesn’t bother me that they can look a bit battered and bruised.”

The house received a full overhaul, in-line with Carrie’s and husband Luis Casanova’s eclectic style: a penchant for the past with a modern eye.

“We restumped, replastered, replaced all the lighting fittings and fixtures and the flooring out the back — we may as well have rebuilt the house,” she said.

“At the start I wasn’t daunted by the process, I was really excited about the challenge and I had a vision of what I wanted the house to look like.”

Before <<< 21 However, setbacks including seepage under the home from a disconnected stormwater pipe, and a significant amount of asbestos, slowed the renovations.

Living in a makeshift environment with a microwave in place of a proper kitchen for six months was another trial.

“We didn’t have a kitchen, there was no floor, we were walking on beams — we lived here basically with a microwave, fridge, barbecue and electric hot plate,” she said.

It was an experience she admits she would prefer not to endure again.

“If we had to I would, but while we were living through that, I started to lose the vision of what the house could be when it was finished, because it was such a mess,” she said.

But the end result would be worth it.

The back porch has been extended and the space has been overhauled to create the ideal entertaining area.

With a fresh coat of paint, the renovations complete and decor from around the globe, the house now fits the ‘vintage industrial’ vision Carrie imagined. v

Small spaces such as kitchenettes, the laundry or an ensuite can pose a problem with their limited measurements making styling a tricky business.

Selecting the right elements is one way to make the most out of the area that you have, including paint colour, tiles and patterns.

Sticking to a single, light colour will ensure a consistent flow throughout the space, giving the appearance of a bigger room. Using more than one colour creates a start and finish, and can divide the room so it looks smaller, while darker tones tend to reflect less light,

DIY MOSAIC TEA-LIGHTS Tea-light holders are so pretty when lit and are a perfect decoration for the evening. This simple design from Mosaic Made Easy by Alice Vinten can be created in any colour scheme.

Transparent glass tiles are used, to allow the light from the candle to shine through the design.

You will need 5 mirror tiles 5 turquoise glitter tiles 5 opaque tiles 15 light blue iridescent tiles 20 blue transparent tiles

A glass tumbler. Anything cylindrical, clear and made from smooth glass will work, about 10 cm diameter x 9 cm tall.

1. Cut the iridescent tiles with nippers into thirds lengthwise. Cut the rest of the tiles into long quarters.

2. Apply a straight line of glue from the top to the base of the glass.

This needs to be fairly thick because you want the glue to ‘grab’ your tiles and hold them in place.

3. Place a first row of tiles onto the glass. The tea-light holder pictured started with a row of glitter tiles. In-between each line of solid colour place a line of transparent tiles.

The pattern is: glitter, transparent, dark blue iridescent, transparent, blue opaque, transparent, light blue iridescent, transparent, mirror, transparent.

Once the glass is covered, set it aside to dry.

4. To grout the glass, turn it upside down, place one hand inside and use this hand to turn the glass as you grout it.

Remember to push the grout sideways as well as lengthways.

Once you have grouted all the way around the tea-light holder, make sure to grout the top and bottom. Push the grout down over the edge of the glass and wipe away the excess as you go.

Don’t worry if the glass gets messy inside, this can be cleaned later.

Wipe the excess grout, following the line of the tiles. Wipe around the top to give a smooth surface. Any rough bits can be sanded once the grout is dry.

“The double-width hallways in particular allow me to turn around without bashing into the walls, and we sunk the frame so the floor is all level, there are no steps,” she said.

Sue is an avid art collector, and also creates some of her own pastel pieces, finding the practice therapeutic.

<<< 35 During her recovery, a friend introduced Sue to pastels, and artworks she has bought and some she has created are featured throughout the home, with the garage easily converting to a creative space.

Sue, who formerly worked in real estate, has even found her 13-year-old home, which has a butler’s pantry, was slightly ahead of the times — with this being the latest rage in modern homes.

“I am into all the home shows now and the greatest thing at the moment is a butler’s pantry, which I hadn’t realised,” she said.

“I just wanted it so I could make tea and coffee for my guests and not have to cart it (from the kitchen to the dining table).”

The open-plan kitchen, dining and living area flows to an outdoor space, with sliding glass doors connecting the interior with the outdoor entertaining area, making it multi-purpose.

“A lot of people are now doing a separate outdoor room with another television area and kitchen, but I couldn’t stand cleaning another area,” Sue said.

A glass wall separates this area from the heated-lap pool, which Sue uses year round, and outside there is no grass, but a lowmaintenance garden with paved areas to allow easy movement.

A potted rose garden and evergreen vines enhance the area and provide a natural element. v

STRATHEARN, A SPRAWLING COUNTRY estate near Ruffy, was the childhood home of Lieutenant Colonel Leslie Cecil Maygar, one of the first recipients of Australia’s highest military honour — the Victoria Cross.

Part of the property is now owned by Phil and Kelly Whitten who delight in the fact the English-style garden is at its best around Anzac Day when the spectacular deciduous trees with their mix of yellow, orange and red leaves create an uplifting visual display.

The couple bought the peaceful country retreat in 2012 and immediately set about restoring the overgrown garden to its impressive former glory.

Intensive garden working bees have revealed such hidden treasures as elaborate stone walls crafted from locally sourced rock, meandering pathways and a delightful arbour supporting thickened, gnarled trunks of blooming, climbing roses.

Lavender borders impart their fragrance as you brush past and roses in hues of pink and white are under planted with pink tulips that emerged from the soil as a pleasant surprise for the new owners.

Stone steps connect various tiers of the sloping garden with the sweeping lawns separated by carefully sculpted hedges of camellias and holly; effectively creating private garden rooms.

An avenue of maple trees add structure in one section of the 2 ha garden and the list of specimen trees dotted around reads like a page from a European horticultural manual.

Plane trees, oak, golden elm, liquidamber, golden ash and maple flourish in the rich soil and blend perfectly with other tree species including a Moreton Bay fig, tulip tree and Bunya pine.

Natives have been used sparingly but one, a huge yellow box is prominent. Kelly said it would soon be underplanted with grevilleas and callistemons to further attract native birds. >>> 46

“We’re mindful that while we want to improve the place we need to be respectful of the original heritage,” Kelly said.

“We appreciate the garden and we’ve done a lot of the hard work to get it back to how it was. Now we’re at the fun stage of being able to beautify and add the pretty things.”

The couple searched extensively for their ideal country property, scouring the internet and inspecting properties in Gippsland, the Mornington Peninsula and Daylesford regions.

Phil was familiar with the north east, having grown up at Swanpool, and he said Strathearn delivered on three specific criteria — altitude, water and established trees.

Set among the rocky outcrops of the Strathbogie Ranges, the garden is the perfect surround for the original old farmhouse, estimated to have been built in 1930 or 1940.

The couple has restored the original character and charm of the front exterior of the home by removing wrought iron fretwork and timber lattice, repainting the weatherboards a crisp white, dismantling an old sunroom and replacing it with Jarrah timber decking, French doors and a criss-cross handrail. v

HOW TO MAKE QUALITY COMPOST Whoever coined the phrase ‘You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear’ had obviously never heard of compost.

To make compost you literally take a pile of waste, add water, mix and aerate and after a short time end up with a rich soil improver for vegetable or flower gardens.

Bacteria works to break down material in the compost heap, releasing valuable garden nutrients including phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Worms are attracted and play their part in the conversion process.

Sustainability Victoria said home composting bins can be bought or made and include plastic bins with ventilation holes or slits, plastic bins without ventilation, metal drums with holes punched in the side and the base removed, rotating drum units (tumblers) or enclosures made from timber (planks or sleepers), bricks, or chicken wire.

To get started choose a shady spot in the garden; layer food scraps, garden waste and shredded paper and use enough water to keep the mixture moist but not wet. Aerating weekly allows the oxygen-rich bacteria to work quickly and efficiently.

After about four months, when the compost is dark and crumbly it can be dug into garden beds or spread on top as mulch.

Vegetable and fruit peelings, tea bags and coffee grounds, crushed egg shells, vacuum dust, shredded paper and cardboard, straw, lawn clippings, garden prunings, leaves and flowers can all be added to the compost heap. Take care to chop prunings into small pieces and don’t add lawn clippings on their own because they can get very hot and rot, resulting in a green slimy mess.

Avoid diseased plant material, meat scraps and bones, dairy products, bread, cake and pet droppings for optimum compost health. v

weight gain THERE ARE FEW THINGS AS DELIGHTFUL AS SNUGGLING UP ON THE COUCH BY THE FIRE ENJOYING A HOT CHOCOLATE, SNACK FOOD OR TAKEAWAY, WHILE OUTSIDE IT IS COLD AND DREARY. But the luxury of indulging in treats and carbohydrate-laden comfort foods is not without a price — the cost is the dreaded winter weight gain.

This insidious beast is often disguised by layered clothing and unnoticed until sunny spring begins and that zipper won’t quite do up.

However, it isn’t just going up a clothing size that is the issue, with a new study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine revealing that excess sugar and carbohydrates in foods during winter are the key culprits in lifestyle diseases.

Shepparton’s Ripe Health director and dietician Rebecca Monk said winter can be a weight management struggle for many because they find themselves spending more times indoors, being less active, and reaching for the energydense comfort foods.

So, what’s the solution? It is actually simpler than you may think. It’s all about food swapping.

Rebecca said while there is no “magic trick” for weight loss, making the conscious effort to cook at home and trading unhealthy ingredients for healthier substitutes was a clever tool which could satisfy a craving.

The added benefit of preparing your own meals is the ability to control the portion size, rather than relying on a fast-food outlet to dictate the amount to eat.

Home cooking also means you are more likely to consume increased fruit and vegetables, which we all know are vital for health and wellbeing.

“To be a home cook, there is no expectation of a MasterChef challenge, a simple meal is often a nutritious meal,” Rebecca said.

“Use your plate to guide your portions with a quarter filled with protein (meat/ fish/egg), a quarter (about 1 cup) carbohydrate (potato/rice/pasta/bread) and bulk-up the remaining half with vegetables.” v

– 1 carrot, finely chopped/grated – 1 zucchini, finely chopped/ grated – 2 cups mashed potato

Make the swap: To increase fibre and reduce calories, replace half of the beef mince with canned beans and instead of potato, top with mashed cauliflower/pumpkin.

Brown mince in a frypan and stir in bolognaise sauce, celery, mushrooms, carrot and zucchini.

Cover and simmer gently for 20 minutes.

Spoon sauce into a pie dish and top with mashed potato or alternate vegetables.

Bake at 180ºC until top is golden, about 20 minutes.

Baked eggs Serves: 1 2 eggs 100 g canned tomatoes, crushed 1/2 cup basil 1 garlic clove, crushed

40 g mushrooms, sliced 1 slice wholegrain bread olive oil spray

Preheat the oven to 200ºC. Lightly spray frying pan with olive oil and then warm over medium heat.

Add sliced mushrooms and crushed garlic, stirring regularly until softened.

Add crushed tomatoes and bring to a simmer, before removing from heat.

Pour 2/3 of the tomato mixture into a round, shallow oven-proof dish about 10 cm in diameter, and break the eggs over the mixture.

Top with torn basil, and then gently spoon on the remaining tomato mixture.

Bake uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes or until eggwhites have set.

Serve with wholegrain toast soldiers for dipping.
