he Sebel Point Resort Apartments will offer a 117-room boutique hotel and serviced apartments. In addition to the hotel, It will also encompass first class amenities including bar and bistro, fine-dining restaurant, 300-person conference facility, a pool, gymnasium and other health club facilities, all built on the Lake Mulwala waterfront.

The development will bring with it 134 direct and indirect jobs and 60 jobs during its construction.

This is another significant milestone for the development following the delivery of an 18-hole championship golf course and new pro shop as well as around 200 homes to date. Stages 1B and 7A of the development continue to sell well with a further waterfront land release of Stage 11 expected in early 2018.

He said buyers of the apartments are a mix of Melbourne, regional and Yarrawonga investors. Prices start from $460,000 for a dual-key apartment to $1.3 million for a three-bedroom unit.

“We created an offer that makes it a

compelling proposition on a yield basis given the development is in regional Victoria, where you are not looking at the same level of capital growth as you would expect in Melbourne,” he said.

Investors who buy an apartment enter into a 10-year-lease agreement with Lotus Living and are guaranteed a gross yield of between 6-7 per cent and a net return of about 5.9 per cent.

“Mr Smith also said Gateway Lifestyle has submitted a planning permit application for a six hectares site at Silverwoods.

develop pedestrian and cycling connectivity between Yarrawonga and The Point precinct.

“This is an exciting time for the local community,” he added.

o far the talented 22 year old has taken out fifth place at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, shot an Olympic record at the same Olympics, been named Shooting Australia’s Male Athlete of the Year, won numerous ISSF Double Trap Championships, was ranked number one in the world in double trap shooting and will this year compete in the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games on home soil.

You were raised and still live along the Murray River, where is your favourite spot to visit along the Murray and why?

It’s hard to name a favourite spot along the Murray but the section near where we live between Bundalong and Mulwala would be my favourite as this is where we spend most of our time fishing and kayaking.

What is it that makes you love the area so much?

I really love the Mulwala and Yarrawonga area, after visiting many different countries and cultures around the world we really do live in the lucky country and it really makes me appreciate what we have at home. There is plenty of space, the relaxed lifestyle in this area is great and there are so many different options to spend time outdoors either on the water or out shooting clays.

You’ve said you train between 6-8 hours a day, what do you like to do when you have leisure time?

I am normally at home helping on the farm when I’m not competing.

Australia has had some success in shooting in the past, who is or has been your inspiration and why?

Many different people who have achieved great success in shooting and other sports have been inspiration for me as I

want to achieve success at the pinnacle event in our sport at the Olympic Games, but working with Russell Mark (former shooting Commonwealth Games gold medalist) has been great throughout my career and I strive to achieve what he has in our sport.

How did you get into the sport of clay shooting?

I started clay target shooting after my dad helped me start and we had clay target shooting for school sport at Corowa High where I began competing on weekends after starting at school.

Is clay shooting your full-time job or do you work elsewhere?

I am training or competing most of the time so it is much like a full-time job.

What has been your hardest competitive event and why?

It’s hard to say which event has been the hardest as each competition is different but the weather conditions can make our sport harder but generally everyone else experiences it also.

Coming into the 2018 Commonwealth Games who is your biggest competition?

The biggest competition for me coming into the games would be England, India and Malta who all have some very strong shooters and Steve Scott from England is the previous Commonwealth Games gold medalist.

RISING STAR

From his small hometown of Springhurst to the bright lights of Tamworth, Jake Sinclair is quickly making a name for himself on the country music scene.

T

he moment Sinclair’s sixyear-old hands touched a guitar for the first time, he was hooked.

That was 23 years ago.

Now the 29-year-old has a debut EP and is fresh off the stage from performing at the Tamworth Music Festival.

There’s excitement in his voice as he talks about Tamworth and his reason for performing there - the Toyota Star Maker competition.

“It’s the same competition that helped jump start the career of Lee Kernaghan,” Sinclair said.

But Sinclair’s story starts almost 900 kilometres from Tamworth in his hometown of Springhurst – population just 300-odd.

Growing up in Springhurst meant few

distractions and entertainment involved riding dirt bikes, fishing or swimming in the Murray River.

“I am pretty keen on fishing, as a Cod fisherman we have the best Cod fishing in the country on our doorstep,” Sinclair said.

“Between Mulwala and Bundalong, I can’t say how many fish I have caught in that river and that lake.

“We had a ski boat that was an ex-southern 80 race boat and that whole lifestyle on the Murray there is just unbeatable.”

When it wasn’t fishing or dirt bikes keeping him entertained there was always his trusty guitar.

Sinclair confessed that hour after hour would pass and he could be found sitting on his family’s verandah, just strumming his guitar.

“The one downside of towns that small is that you can get quite bored, but for me it was a

great thing because when I was six I got my first guitar. By the time I was eight I started actually playing chords rather than just belting it,” Sinclair said.

“When you are away from distractions you can really focus on things and for me that was my music. “All that downtime turned into what I do now.”

Growing up as a Sinclair also meant big 22inch wheels and a daily injection of dieseline.

His dad, Peter, owns a transport company which meant several trucks parked out the front at all times of their 1ha property in town.

“I quickly became good at washing trucks,” Sinclair said.

But when we wasn’t washing trucks he was learning to play guitar, which came naturally to him.

“When I was about eight I started guitar lessons in primary school but got kicked out of that because I was progressing faster than the teacher,” Sinclair admitted.

“I was pretty much self-taught once I got the basics down.”

Raised on a mix of traditional and modern country music, some influences were Keith Urban, George Strait and Slim Dusty.

His apprenticeship involved hitting the road and touring with musicians such as Travis Collins, Jayne Denham and Luke Austen.

These days he plays alongside one of his greatest influences – his older brother, Travis.

Travis, who is 10 years older, has already made a name for himself on the country music scene.

Even though Sinclair doesn’t think he bears a resemblance to his brother, there’s been the case of mistaken identity.

“Fans have thought I was Travis and I would be standing in the street signing autographs.

I did let them in on the joke after signing his name,” Sinclair confessed with a laugh.

“It’s funny because we don’t really look alike, you get out of the big tour truck and they just think you are him.”

The past six months have been about touring around regional Australia and playing shows – something he’s really passionate about.

“I grew up in a town of 300 people and if anything ever came to town then it was big news. That’s why I love getting around regional areas, the music is appreciated,” Sinclair said.

Sinclair is now writing new songs and divides his time between touring and living back at his family’s property.

“These new songs are about living a country life. Some people look down on being raised in the country, but listening to country music and driving a ute is a great way of life, I’m really proud of it,” Sinclair said.

ANOTHER TEQUILA SUNRISE

They have written songs about it, first the Champs with Tequila and more recently the Eagles with Tequila Sunrise, but just down the road in little Strathmerton Patrick Tansey has caught up with a visionary family

I

running Australia's (and one of the world's) largest cacti and succulent gardens. Where their plans for the next chapter in this remarkable story has come from somewhere way out there is left field. t’s a quirky little green sign.

Of a cactus capped with a sombrero. You’ll only see it if you are on the Murray Valley Hwy, and if that trip is taking you to, or through, Strathmerton.

Either way, if you miss it then you have missed something so unexpected and so out of place you may well have wasted your trip.

Unless you get back there post haste and pay closer attention to that little green sign.

Because it will take you into worlds far, far away.

Such as the Sonoran Desert, with those huge, man-like cacti casting their mournful shadows across the arid countryside, which mostly sprawls across Arizona and spills across the border into northern Mexico (and hang onto that address for later) – and not along the Murray River in northern Victoria.

And to a large degree that’s exactly the idea.

To some, Cactus Country conjures images of Palm Springs, to others Albuquerque, New

Mexico (right next door to Arizona) the next.

Or even an example of the 1000km of the Atacama.

So it’s no understatement to point out that what separates Cactus Country from other ambitious enterprises in the region is variety.

It is home to eight garden trails blooming with cactus plants from around the globe; wending their way through a staggering 10 acres of cacti and succulents.

Each trail serves to provide an individual and intimate experience for the explorer who has managed to get off the beaten track and into this otherworld.

Here is a breathtaking expanse but so big you won’t first grasp the dream, and the drive, that has turned the hobby of one generation into the passion of a second and now the pride of a third.

But to fill in the blanks Jim Hall’s fascination for cacti began as child, watching his father passionately and painstakingly creating the collection that would become the cornerstone of Cactus Country.

Because even as a child Jim had divined the

magic of his father’s plants; he would closely observe the sheer delight of the many people who came to check out his father’s garden, amazed and enthralled by the shapes, sizes and colours of his plants.

So when his father decided to sell his collection in 1979, Jim decided there was no way it was going anywhere.

But the timing wasn’t great – in three months Jim was due to marry Julie, a local schoolteacher bereft of any gardening background.

So with that limited skillset they took a deep breath and bought the lot.

And that’s when the struggle really began.

Today their son John by and large is the king of the cacti and he knows his heritage well.

“For the first four years they looked after the plants on their three-acre property, slowly propagating new seed and planting bigger specimens to allow them to grow faster,” John recalled.

“Of course they still had to make an income,

so mum continued to teach and dad picked fruit at local orchards and pruned in the winter,” he said.

“It was a frustrating time because they could see a great opportunity to develop a cacti and succulent garden for tourists, but they didn’t have the finance to back up the plans.

“Dad worked very hard, even growing tomatoes and strawberries to try and get ahead to be able to finance their vision and four more years down the track they purchased this property, which was a peach orchard; bulldozed the trees and began setting up the gardens.”

In 1984 they purchased a second collection, which had belonged to Ed Kroemer, a bachelor from Loxton in South Australia who had travelled the world collecting cacti.

When he died he requested in his will his collection be kept together and his brothers and sisters took more than a year to connect with the Halls.

On October 21 in 1988 Spikes and Blooms officially opened and since then the gardens have grown from half an acre to more than 10 acres – and been rebranded Cactus Country.

And now back to 2018 and the allure of every one of those acres.

Where John stands tall, surrounded by his family’s legacy, imposing man and imposing backdrop but still, in his mind, very much a work in progress.

John is a man driven by change, determined to make his mark on enhancing the Cactus Country experience for visitors through innovation.

John said the family’s cactus farm was the biggest in the southern hemisphere; its gardens rank in the top five for largest in the world.

And it’s right here in Strathmerton – in the driest continent in the world and a vast land without a single native cactus.

Judging from the sparkle in John Hall’s eyes the next big thing in his prickly plants and succulent siblings is just over the horizon.

Now if you have hung onto that word Mexico, you might begin to get the drift of what’s coming next.

If you think the Halls have built a genuine one-off in Australia, they’re about to have a crack at another.

Tequila

Another niche market where John sees another spectacularly exciting opportunity for this little gene pool of left-field thinkers.

John wants the family to go into tequila – although they may have to give it a slightly more Down Under derivation because only

the drink made in Mexico can be marketed as tequila (a bit like the French and their fixation on things such as champagne).

But this is a big dream which will entail starting from the very bottom of the production chain.

It might be a five to seven year plan but it would be another first for the family.

Tequila, in case you didn’t know, is made from the agave, a group of some 225 species of fleshy-leafed succulents found from the southern US through the Caribbean and Central America to Venezuela and Colombia.

Some species take decades to bloom and most only bloom once.

Making John a man on a mission; a fact-finding mission in the first instance, a journey certain to take him to Mexico and back, in search of how to make a decent drop of tequila.

He said while the adventure would be a long learning curve to a finished product, it was also incredibly exciting.

“You’ve got to grow the plants for five to seven years until maturity to cut them open and start producing, start experimenting, start getting the flavors right, understanding (them),” he said.

Cactus Country would initially sell its finished product directly through its shop, rather than commercially, preferring to parcel it together with the experience the farm offers.

Right now John does not profess to be a tequila professional, rather an enthusiast on his way to being a connoisseur.

“Whenever I go to Mexico, I try it, tour factories ... I’m certainly not an expert, but I certainly love the flavours,” he said.

“At the moment, the focus is getting from where we are now, to producing that first batch — it’s going to take quite bit of help.

“It’s going to be a learning journey for anyone who tries to produce it. We don’t doubt it’s a big project, but it’s certainly something worth looking into ... an incredible challenge.”

Well his DNA would suggest that’s a challenge he is more than up for.

He is certainly not shy of ambition, an invaluable commodity in any business manager or owner.

Besides the venture into tequila, there is also the dream of building an amphitheatre to enhance the live music experience – a service the establishment already provides on occasion.

As a benchmark for the growing concern that is Cactus Country, it has gone from annually ushering around 7000 visitors through the gates a few years ago to budgeting for more than 20,000 in calendar 2018.

In a town of just 1000 people.

They are certainly punching above their weight – and one day we may all get to drink to that.

On a larger scale the winery participates in popular wine festivals including the Rutherglen Winery Walkabout and Tastes of Rutherglen.

Most months an Artist in Residence is featured and between December and January the winery’s Bridge Bar operates each afternoon where a selection of award-winning Pfeiffer wines and wine cocktails are served beside the old timber bridge overlooking picturesque views of Sunday Creek.

Turtle “pfeeding” and platypus spotting from the bridge is a highlight during the months from November to May. Wine lovers looking to indulge in a bargain can do so during the winery’s annual Giant Warehouse Sale, always held on the Friday before the Winery Walkabout.

Local communities in the area have banded together to create the beginnings of a unique silo art trail in north east Victoria.

T

ungamah and Goorambat have recently completed their artworks with local wildlife adorning the silos and catching the eye of anybody travelling through the towns.

The St James, Devenish and Katamatite communities are also investigating options to have their silos adorned with art with the aim to eventually incorporate all sites into a north-east silo art trail attraction from Benalla.

The Devenish community has rallied strongly behind an art project with generous financial donations from locals and farming families in the district and as a result works look set to start soon.

Long-time St James resident Jim Kelly has been a pioneer behind the idea and planning of silo art in St James and said it would be fantastic to see more of it in regional Victoria.

“When these silos are not being used they are just standing there wasting space really,” Jim said.

“It’s too hard and cost consuming to tear them down so why not do something different and something that may even bring people to the area.”

Discussions surrounding what the next stage in the process of attracting silo art in Yarrawonga were amped up after an article published in the Yarrawonga Chronicle received positive responses to the idea from the community.

Owners of the Pearce Street silo, GrainCorp along with private owner of the Sharp Street silo Rick Leeworthy are both open to the idea of having artwork on their silos.

If you have not seen silo art up close and personal and stood underneath these structures while marvelling at the extent of the work, you are missing out.

Silo art has become a phenomenon throughout Victoria with many small towns inviting discussions around the idea of turning their disused and discoloured concrete structures into works of art.

The small Victorian town of Brim began the phenomenon in 2015 when they acquired Brisbane artist Guido van Helten to beautify their structures with the end product becoming a wonder for the eye.

The grand scheme of the projects from the heights the artists go to while covering the structures to the fine detail that is cast upon the subjects adorned on the side of these silos are something to be in awe of.

The possibility of small towns in this region joining a north east Victoria silo art trail is an exciting prospect for the region with a significant drawcard for visitors all year round.

The sixth annual Marcus Fraser Ambrose Event at Corowa Golf Club on January 6 and 7 was another outstanding success with 292 players both days.

I

ntroduced by 39-yearold Fraser, the town’s star international golfer, along with his dad John Fraser and key event organiser Shaun Whitechurch, the event raises funds for the golf club which has struggled financially in recent years.

Such is the popularity of the home town hero who is currently on the European Tour, big fields take to the glorious golf course and clubhouse with magnificent views, to

support the cause.

“I was lucky enough to have this facility growing up and we want to make sure it stays forever,” equal Olympic record holder Fraser told Murray River Living.

“I thank all the players coming back to play in the event and welcome all new players.”

Marcus presented numerous trophies on the Sunday evening, including golf bags and sets of clubs to the victorious winning team comprising Travis Merritt, Chris Phillpot and Scott Reid. The trio’s winning score was a brilliant 57.2.

Wagon Wheel Reserve About 10km from Corowa on the Mulwala Road, access via Spring Drive.

This spot offers good camping on the high bank and some lower spots.

Bank fishing is available but no boat launching facilities apart from a small dirt ramp on a creek.

Snake Island Located next to Wagon Wheel Reserve (also called the Flying Fox) the spot offers a pretty good ramp but for four-wheeldrives only.

Good fishing from the bank and boat and great for Murray Crayfish within the season.

The Iron Gate Reserve A big reserve with dirt ramp, located opposite the turn off to Riverina Milk on Freyers Road, heading toward Mulwala.

It is situated on a back water lagoon with access to the main river some 500m away - great for children and kayaks as the current is minimal.

Good fishing all-round, especially around the island in the main river.

The Shanty This is a large backwater that meets the main river at both ends and one of the most popular spots around.

This spot is always a good water level and very productive for both Yellowbelly and Murray Cod. For more information You can pick up a copy of the Murray River Access Guide from the Corowa Visitor Information Centre to help you discover this magnificent stretch of river. Along with detailed river maps, there is information on camping, boating and fishing regulations.

The guide also includes town maps highlighting public facilities, reserves and boat ramps to ensure your fishing experience is safe and enjoyable. A great resource for anyone visiting the region to enjoy the great outdoors.

Pigdons Holden has become the first ever family in Yarrawonga to be in business for 100 years.

P

igdons Holden is renowned as one of the region’s most celebrated and oldest familyowned businesses with a reputation for honest, ethical trading and good corporate citizenship.

On the occasion of the 100 year celebration, a fourth generation business manager and with 25 years experience in the retail motor vehicle industry, Andrew Pigdon, exudes confidence in the business’ future.

“The business history and traditions are important to my family but we are now concentrating on the future and planning for it,” Dealer Principal Andrew Pigdon said.

John Pigdon came to the Wilby district as an infant with his parents who were original settlers.

In 1915 he moved to Yarrawonga with his wife and young family, managing the newly established VPC before finally opening his own business in January 1918.

The business operated initially as a commission agency for H.V.McKay farm machinery (Massey Ferguson) as a wheat buyer and farm merchandise.

The business began selling motor vehicles, initially Morris, Studebaker and Chevrolet,

and Douglas motor bikes. The first car sold, by John, was in 1921, a new Studebaker.

It was during the 1920s Yarrawonga people started buying cars. Cars, otherwise known as ‘horseless carriages’ or ‘motorised vehicles’ had appeared in Australia around 1900.

In 1926, John’s son James, aged 19, joined the business. In partnership with his father, and sister Vera, James developed an expanding business.

He was largely responsible for the successful management of the wheat buying operation at Pigdons. Wheat was bought, stacked and stored, then trucked to Rennie, Warragoon and within Yarrawonga.

Jim was totally involved in the business, creating sales opportunities in farm machinery and the gradually growing motor vehicle market.

He was always on the go, either travelling with company representatives or his father John, seeing clients and building a reputation as an enthusiastic, hard working young man following in the footsteps of his well known father.

Vera worked in the business for 58 years and

Pigdons was appointed a full-time dealer for Holden in the mid 1970s. Expansion occurred out of town when Pigdons Corowa began trading in 2013, having taken over the Jasper Bros. Holden dealership in Corowa.

Geoff Pigdon and brother Bruce Pigdon OAM joined Pigdon Motors in 1962.

Initially, Geoff worked in the farm machinery department before his considerable ability in sales became apparent.

Bruce entered Pigdons business, particularly to learn the operation of the business from a management perspective.

Bruce represented the motor industry of North-East Victoria as an executive committee member of the Australian Automobile Dealer Association for 10 years.

As per his brother, father and grandfather, Bruce has been extremely communityminded, so much so that he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2017 for services to the community.

“The expert in anything was once a beginner” andra ‘Dutchy’ Schaap feels right at home with a paintbrush in her hand, but that hasn’t always been the case.

Born in the Netherlands, Sandra began working as a graphic designer after completing graphic school in Holland.

From owning a graphic design studio to specialising in designing high-end gloss magazines, Sandra now uses those skills as an art director at the Yarrawonga Chronicle after moving to Australia in 2007.

It wasn’t until recently that she discovered her talent for capturing the human form on canvas.

While in a desperate need for a hobby two years ago, Sandra dabbled with woodwork

and the result - a planter box made from old pallets.

“That planter box had some 300 screws in it,” she confessed.

That’s when Sandra knew she had to try her hand at something else.

“One day I thought: ‘let’s try some painting’,” she said.

Sandra met and married her partner, Judy, while living in the Netherlands.

The couple lived in Yarrawonga for two years before moving to Mulwala in 2009, with their two beautiful dogs, and have turned one of their spare bedrooms into Sandra’s studio.

Sandra says she finds the painting process to be relaxing and has stuck with portraits at this stage, but is open to other subjects.

While Sandra paints for her own enjoyment, she’s had some requests from friends to paint their grandchildren.

“I don’t want my paintings to look like photos. I like that you can still see the brush strokes.”

Off she set to purchase a canvas and some basic colours of acrylic paint.

“I started with a painting I found online, just to give it a go,” Sandra said.

“It turned out really nice and it was clear that painting was my new hobby.

“I paint quite fast and there is not too much detail in my work because I don’t want my painting to look like photos. I like that you still can see the brush strokes.”

Pleased with her first painting – inspred by another painter - she posted a photo of her creation on Facebook to show family and friends, just to discover their thoughts.

“I must say I was very pleased to read that they all loved it,” Sandra said.

“And the first reactions were that they couldn’t believe that I painted it. This inspired me to continue painting.”

“My art is first of all for myself, but I feel I can do a bit more,” she said.

“I am now running out of wall space at home to hang them all.”

Sandra is happy to say that her woodwork days were not a complete waste of time, Judy has since taken over their work shed and enjoys constructing items for in and around the house, including some nice wooden frames for Sandra’s paintings.

Now they both have a meaningful hobby.

Studies have shown that feeling lonely or socially isolated can have a major impact on mental and physical health, and older people can be particularly vulnerable.

In an effort to ensure local older people stay active and socially connected, Intereach is launching free one-on-one social support for people aged over 65 years in the Corowa area.

An initiative of the Intereach Community Support program, one-on-one social support offers companionship to older people, some of whom might otherwise have few or no social connections.

Local social support volunteers are matched with an older person based on their shared interests and will meet at a regular time each

Intereach CEO Keryn Fox said everyone feels a bit lonely now and again, but older people can be more susceptible.

“Getting older can bring with it significant life changes, such as retirement, health or mobility issues or the death of a partner or

close friend, and those changes can increase the likelihood of someone becoming socially isolated,” she said.

“Evidence suggests that staying socially connected is really good for our health, especially as we get older.

“Friendships boost your happiness and confidence and reduce your stress. Studies have even found that older adults with a rich social life are likely to live longer.”

Intereach Social Support volunteer Gill Earl said she was excited to be involved with the new program.

“I really enjoy volunteering, for me it’s about getting out there, meeting people and making new friends and connections,” she said.

“I think I get as much out of it as the people I visit do.”

DESIGNING A NEW LIFE

Partners in life and at work, Aaron Nicholls and Phillip Nielsen have happily swapped city living for a country lifestyle. The couple, with a design business in Corowa's main street, recently finished their first major project – the town's new cinema.

A

aron recalls he couldn’t wait to finish high school, move away from his hometown of Corowa, and explore the wider world.

Little did he know it would be the town he would come back to after years of study, work and living in cities throughout Australia and in London.

While living in Melbourne Aaron met fellow designer, Phillip, and the two had an instant connection.

Fate and opportunity led Aaron back to his hometown last year when, by chance, he discovered a cinema was to be built in Corowa.

“This meant there was movement in Corowa and someone saw the town had potential,” Aaron said.

“Corowa was a fantastically busy town right up to the 1990s, which led us to believe there was an opportunity and a real need for

designers in this place to get the town back on track.”

Several meetings later, one with the Corowa Golf Club – where the cinema was to be built – and Federation Council – who had a grant to build the cinema – Phillip and Aaron won the design contract.

Regional Design Service was then born.

another designer, Regina Kaluzny, work their magic.

Aaron and Phillip knew if they wanted to make a difference and be involved in the town, they had to live in the town.

Fate stepped in again – Aaron had inherited his late father’s Corowa home where they now reside.

The property even came with a four-legged

friend, Jimmy.

Jimmy is now part of the family and tags along to most places.

Just recently the trio floated on a lilo down the mighty Murray River on Australia Day, which is a local tradition they are happy to adopt.

“It was this two and a half hour time period where there was no phone, no watch and we

couldn’t do anything but float down the river and it was bliss,” Aaron said.

Phillip described the experience as a great “time out”.

There are other perks to living in a small town - going out to dinner usually doesn’t require a booking.

“Even if it is busy they will try to find you a space, try and do that in an urban environment

and it is just too stressful,” Aaron said.

Phillip, originally from Townsville, doesn’t feel like he is missing out on anything by living in a regional setting.

“There are a lot of misconceptions that when you move to the country you are not connected to design or art. They had the Archibald at (MAMA in Albury) over Christmas, so you don’t have to go to Sydney

to see something like that. There are great exhibitions that tour around.”

The architectural identity of Corowa has always impressed Phillip who describes the town as an archaeological site.

“A lot of its history is still here, it hasn’t been demolished,” he said.

“There are these great elements of the 1970s … there’s these great mosaics at the bottom

half of Sanger Street on all the shop fronts and they are this mid-century modern aesthetic that’s quietly a layer of the town’s story.

There are so many layers of time; it’s like an archaeological site.”

The couple are excited to add their own layer to the town’s architectural history.

CHAMPION SKIER'S REMARKABLE COMEBACK

For Erin Weston-Green water skiing was destined to be a big part of her life.

Growing up in Bundalong where the Ovens River meets the mighty Murray River, Erin was born into a keen water skiing family.

H

er father, Kelvin was a champion barefoot skier and spent many hours with Erin, skiing on the perfect waterways around Bundalong.

Before too long Erin soon joined the Mulwala Water Ski Club Show Team where she began mastering the fine art of swivel skiing.

Erin quickly found her calling and after several years performing and competing she had moved to Florida in 2014 to continue her dream of being a full time swivel ski instructor and professional performer and was a lead act in the renowned Legoland Theme Park’s show ski production.

But one evening in June, 2017 a short drive to McDonalds for a snack with friends became a nightmare and turned her life upside down.

The accident tragically left Erin with a broken neck, two broken vertebrates, nerve damage to her left arm and a 15cm laceration on her forehead and it was unsure if she will ever make a full recovery.

Erin was told after the accident that her injury was similar to those seen in paraplegics and it was a miracle she was still walking.

“My original surgeon told me I would not be

able to do anything physically demanding for 12 months, no pushing, pulling, lifting weights over 25lb or 11kg and definitely no skiing,” Erin said.

“They showed me where the spinal cord was compressed and told me it was an injury they would usually see in paraplegics.”

“I felt helpless to my situation because they made it sound like the risk of paralysis would halt any kind of progress for 12 months.”

Erin said she faced the harsh reality if she couldn’t get back to work as soon as possible her career would be over.

“It was too long and under the circumstances of my employment my only choice would have been to retire, and I didn’t want that.

The doctor didn’t understand how important it was to me. Every appointment was; “12 months no exceptions and there’s nothing you can do about it”, and that was really heartbreaking,” she said.

But typical of her competitive nature and determination Erin then reached out to another specialist in the area.

“The second opinion changed everything. The new doctor is a sports surgeon with a great

understanding of athletic ability and physical strength that sets us apart from the average person.

“I didn’t find out how close of a call it really was until my second opinion.

“I took in my original CT scan hoping to get back to work at the four month mark and he basically told me the only reason I’m not in a wheelchair was because I am me and not someone else.

“It was certainly a shock, I didn’t realise it was that bad I had never seen the scans myself.

“They showed me where the spinal cord was compressed and told me that it was an injury they would usually see in paraplegics.

“He told me if I work out hard at the gym, take calcium, eat well, and rest often, then I had a chance to go back to skiing at six months.

“They made it clear there would still be some risk and there may be limitations but he gave me eight weeks to do it. So I went to the gym twice a day, six days a week. Ate a ton of food, slept a lot and did everything I could to heal the fusion.”

Erin’s specialist appointment on December 11, 2017 confirmed all her hard work had paid off and her fusion had healed completely and was allowed to return to work with no restrictions.

“The PA who looked at the scan said I’d done a really great job growing the fusion site.

“All the physical work I had put in had stimulated the healing and strengthened everything else around it as well.”

Erin immediately returned to show skiing and is still hitting the gym hard every day to keep on improving herself.

“I feel great I have some minor nerve damage still remaining in my left thumb and I can tell my left shoulder isn’t as strong, but in time that will come back.”

Erin said she has received amazing support from family and friends back in Australia. She said her mother, Leonie and father, Kelvin were always there and helping her whenever she needed it.

“I’d also like to thank all my friends for their support and checking in on me from time to time to let me know they’re thinking of me.”

The next goal for Erin is to represent her country in the World Ski Show Championships to be held in Canada later in 2018.

Patrick Tansey sat down with the a group of locals to find out why they formed a band and what not only makes it tick but how they plan on successfully transitioning it to the wider world of music, where the big crowds come together.

I

saiah Mustica, Sean Browning, Liam Wyatt-Carter and Alex Gardner have thrown caution to the wind, a profound belief in their own ability and formed The Delirious.

But don’t be fooled, these indie rockers could just as easily called themselves The Very Serious.

Because they are.

Dead set serious.

They might be a gang of larrikins lads by day but when they are in the studio, on stage or just working on new songs they are united in delivering the dream – making music people want to listen to.

And they are just as determined to make some serious soundwaves in the industry.

From Cobram.

The road they are planning to take is littered with broken dream, their decision almost demands applause before the first song has been sung.

But attempting to launch that bold bid from a small country town so far off the radar

adds a charming mix of naïve enthusiasm and genuine intestinal fortitude.

What the band thinks it really has going for it is four contrasting personalities coming together to provide the cornerstone of their sound.

They also believe growing up along the Murray, in a small town, has profoundly impacted on their song-writing and identity as a group.

Walking into Isaiah Mustica’s recording studio (and home); where the boys can often be found fine-tuning their music, would make the most cynical music veteran remember why they first fell in love with the whole scene.

Before the arrival of computers and their catchy electronic beats commonly mixed into the choruses of today’s pop songs, was an element of soul and more traditional instruments such as the bass guitar and drums.

In the hands of The Delirious you once again get that authentic, raw sound, even gritty, the feel of music pure and simple.

“I think we have always loved music

individually but my dad plays guitar and he kind of forced it on us as kids (with seemingly laughter). If we didn’t play guitar we weren’t in the family, so that’s how I got into it,” Isaiah explained.

Sean Browning didn’t have it in his face; his family’s approach was more subtle.

“My mum and dad both played instruments. I got into it seriously when I was given a guitar as a present, they sort of snuck it up on me and I actually thought it was an ironing board at first,” Sean said.

“I didn’t get into it too much at that point because starting out it’s really hard. But eventually mum signed me up for lessons and I started getting okay and then Isaiah let me make a band with him (and the laughter keeps coming).”

Liam Wyatt-Carter got hooked on the live aspect of being in a band, and hooked from the very first gig he saw.

“That first time, I was like, ‘that’s cool, I want to do that’. It was a Triple J event called One

Night Stand in Mildura,” he added.

But if those boys can draw on a musical legacy, for Alex Gardner that story is a little different.

Neither of his parents played instruments but “my dad actually listened to a lot of the music we cover now so it was there in the background,” Alex said.

“So in a way I was always around music, just not learning instruments and playing it.

“Once I was at high school I really started getting into it and joined the school band and now here I am with these guys.”

There’s no doubt the guys have already tasted some of the highs and lows of the business, which is what your passion has to become to build a future.

Such as the dynamics of playing in Melbourne compared to playing the local scene around Cobram.

Isaiah agreed it was different but said what he really liked about the band’s approach was the way they all put 100 per cent into every gig.

“Even the one we did recently when we played for a crowd of two but we still went as hard as we could and pretended like it was a festival

of thousands,” he added.

Shaun reckons Melbourne is great “but no one knows who you are so it’s very hard to get them to turn their head and actually watch you”.

“Whereas at local gigs you’ve got the people who know you watching,” Shaun said.

“But in saying that, Melbourne is definitely where we need to establish ourselves.”

Alex said the noticeable difference for him was the Melbourne crowds really want original music a lot more.

He said at gigs along the Murray people are “really into covers”.

“They want to hear the Horses (Daryl Braithwaite), which we don’t even play,” he laughed.

Like most nascent bands keeping overheads down is critical.

Liam said covers aside The Delirious is trying to go down the Triple J route as much as it can because the format naturally lends itself to the band’s musical style.

“We try to have a crack at Unearthed as much as we can; which is a Triple J platform

for aspiring young musicians to share their music.”

The Delirious has a self-titled EP coming out very shortly and with five songs it tested their creative standpoint.

Isaiah said of the five on the EP, two have already been released.

“The journey to create the EP wasn’t anything too straining. We wrote all the songs in 2016 and it was like our first venture into the music industry so it was really exciting instead of being daunting.”

Alex said for the EP they all chipped in. He wrote a song, Liam churned out a couple, Isiah wrote one and Sean the other.

They all agree, however, they find everything they do when making music comes back to their youth.

Isaiah said all the songs he has written touch on youth and Cobram and how that had shaped them because if it wasn’t for this town, they wouldn’t be doing what we are doing.

From here Alex said the most important next step would be to release the EP and push that.

He said that entailed a bit of a process to release it.

“We have to all sign up with different licensing agencies and go through digital distribution companies before we can officially put it out there,” Alex said.

But it was Isaiah who had the last word.

“I’ve told these boys since day one this is what I want to do.

“I told them I don’t want to clean cars for the rest of my life (interview ended in paroxysms of mirth – and hysterical laughter).”

After meeting while camping on the banks of Corowa's Murray River five years ago, Sydney couple Mel and Russell Withers now return every summer for their outdoor holiday adventures.

heir romance with the wine region steered them towards a wedding surrounded by the perfect backdrop of grapevines and wine barrels.

We refer to the CorowaRutherglen region as our paradise, it really is our happy place,” Mel said.

“We love everything from the great wine to the tasty cheese and there was never any question of us getting married anywhere else.”

The couple chose their favourite winery – All Saints Estate at Wahgunyah – for their outdoor ceremony with the reception held inside the winery’s Cask Hall.

Mel walked down the aisle in her stunning Q’Nique dress that featured a Guipure lace bodice and a flowing chiffon skirt in ivory/ pearl pink.

The couple love their cheese so much so that their ‘cake’ was a cheese tower from the Indigo Cheese Co. Guests travelled from all over the country and the day of the wedding was perfect – a 24 degree October day, blue skies and fluffy

clouds.

“We were incredibly lucky as the day before was torrential hail and the day after was overcast and drizzling,” Mel recalled.

To make the most of their special day, photos were taken before the ceremony by Sharne and Ally from Aria Photography.

“We had spoken to them about our desire for a mixture of epic, structured shots through to the more intimate ones, as well as some fun, candid shots and they absolutely nailed it,” Mel said.

“They well and truly showcased the beauty that All Saints and Tuileries (where the girls got ready) had to offer.”

Surrounded by large oak trees, the couple exchanged their vows in the rose garden on the grounds of All Saints Estate.

“We wrote our own vows using quotes from my favourite poet, Christopher Poindexter,” Mel said.

“I had asked my friend, Naomi, to do a reading during the ceremony, little did I know she had contacted Christopher Poindexter himself and

organised for him to write us a personalised poem for our wedding day. It was beautiful and the gesture had me in tears.”

Straight after the ceremony there were canapes and entrees under the large oak trees, which meant a seamless transition from ceremony into reception, maximising the time everyone had to celebrate.

Mel had some hesitations about organising a destination wedding, but with the help of local suppliers and All Saints’ wedding co-ordinator, Jodie, her vision was realised.

“Tracy from Enhance Styling and Events and Katie from Poppy Emporium were also amazing,” Mel said.

Equally impressive were the make-up services of Lara from Silken Dragonfly, who made the bridal party look stunning and the team at Jack and the Fox did a beautiful job on their hair.

“Despite being miles away and only having emails and the odd phone call to communicate over, all the local suppliers made the experience stress free, enjoyable,
