Demand for hay remains high otential frost damage to crops and P patchy rains highlighted the week ending September 13 in the Goulburn
and Murray valleys, according to the latest Dairy Australia hay report. ‘‘Crops are not looking as promising as they once were in the Goulburn Valley and the frost this week (September 9 to 13) may have caused some damage,’’ the report said. ‘‘Many farmers are busy making silage and it is anticipated that some farmers will start making hay next week (September 16 to 20).
‘‘The little bit of rain crops received should help them push ahead and be ready for hay making.’’ The report said there were no changes to prices in the week ending September 13, with cereal hay ranging from $300 to $400/tonne, lucerne hay ranging from $500 to $520/tonne, straw will cost you between $120 and $150/tonne and pasture hay will set you back between $270 and 310/tonne. Compared to the same time last year, cereal hay has come down slightly from $425/tonne, lucerne remains steady
($500/tonne on September 14, 2018), straw was $170/tonne and pasture hay is cheaper by at least $60/tonne ($370/tonne in 2018). Demand is a particular issue locally, with the report stating demand is high in the Goulburn Valley region. ‘‘Many farmers are purchasing standing crops,’’ the report said. ‘‘Gassed rice straw and mouldy corn stubble are being carted into the region from the Riverina (and) there is a lot of hay moving from the region (as well).’’
It is not just locally, with demand becoming a national issue too. ‘‘It is postulated that many farmers are trying to get in early this season to make sure they have themselves covered while some farmers in drier areas are running low on feed supplies,’’ the report said. ‘‘There is a lot of hay being transported around the country of varying quality. ‘‘We caution buyers and recommend feed-testing and viewing fodder before purchasing to be sure of quality of the feed.’’

Equipment update will appeal to growers LAAS will introduce a C number of new equipment options,
including an integrated bale weighing system, and a high-end LED lighting and a ‘pull-out’ knife drawer, for its Quadrant 5300, 5200 and 4200 big square balers. CLAAS Harvest Centre Echuca dealer principal Brendan Caffery said the bale weighing function should appeal to all farmers and contractors. ‘‘Weighing takes place during the baling process, so there’s no delay in the baling operation,’’ he said. ‘‘Individual bale weights — accurate to plus or minus 5 kg even at speeds of up to 20 km/h — are displayed on
the Isobus control terminal in the cab. ‘‘Bale weights can then be saved according to the job or paddock for later processing or invoicing. ‘‘Operators using the CLAAS Telematics remote monitoring system can also use this data to plot crop yield and bale moisture across the field.’’ Mr Caffery said the new LED lighting system would ensure user-friendly operation and maintenance when working at night. ‘‘It comprises seven highquality lights fitted to key components of the baler, including the drawbar, flywheel, feed rake and bale chamber,’’ he said. Quadrant 4200 can also be specified with the pull-out
knife drawer already found on the larger 5300 and 5200 models. ‘‘Being able to pull out the knife drawer dramatically reduces the time required for a complete knife change from one hour to just 15 minutes,’’ Mr Caffery said. ‘‘This time saving will be a real boon for contractors, not to mention making it much easier to maintain and replace the knives, resulting in better forage quality and throughput.’’ The new features will be available on all 2019-delivery machines. ➤ For more information, phone CLAAS Harvest Centre Echuca on 5480 1855.

nvergordon hay contractor Luke Felmingham, of LKF Contracting, was recognised at this year’s AFIA National Fodder Conference for his 10-year service to the industry. Held in the Hunter Valley in late July, Mr Felmingham said the conference guest speakers spoke on a range of topics from lamb bacon and innovation to OH&S as well as the problems facing Murray-Darling Basin communities. Speaking on his award win, Mr Felmingham joked about what the award meant before saying ‘‘it’s good to be recognised’’. ‘‘It probably means I’m getting old,’’ he said, laughing. ‘‘It’s good to be recognised within your industry and it was a good formal dinner and function and a good conference.’’ Mr Felmingham said the advancements in machinery were the biggest changes over the 10 years.
‘‘Everyone was feeling fairly buoyant about how everything was travelling. ‘‘If you’ve been lucky enough to snag a few showers you’re probably still there but mainly around here the water price is just very severe, it’s unaffordable. ‘‘Farmers are going in earlier to try and get what they can for basically no irrigation, trying to get some early silage cut and then maybe water or maybe snag a rain to get some more growth later on. ‘‘I see that’s why it’s sort of come earlier and we’re just desperate for a rain to slow the season down.’’ Luke’s father, Ken Felmingham, said one of the main reasons the season was earlier was that ‘‘the sub-soil moisture isn’t quite there’’. ‘‘So we’ve been having enough rain to have reasonable crops but not enough to get a good profile down,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve just started irrigating some rye-grass at the moment and it’s taking more water than I expected.’’
‘‘Just the machinery going forward,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s getting more efficient, everything’s getting bigger, heavier. ‘‘Things like the steamer, the conditioning technology drying out hay faster, packaging products — everything’s evolving.’’ In terms of the current season, Mr Felmingham said it was running two weeks ahead of normal. ‘‘Definitely, this year, the season started earlier which is putting a lot of pressure on machinery dealers and contractors and farmers,’’ he said. ‘‘So it’s really essential that you carefully plan. ‘‘This early spring weather is more volatile so you’ve got increased chances of rain and there’s still frosts and dewy mornings so it gets pretty hard in the Goulburn Valley to conserve hay if you start to go in too early. ‘‘If you spoke to people two to three weeks ago probably they were sitting pretty.

offers is why Seymour grain grower Richard Stecher, of Stecher Ag, has stayed with the Shepparton business for 15 years. Mr Stecher, who is also a hay contractor, said his preferred machinery brand was Krone — another reason for his longstanding relationship with Bertoli Farm Machinery. ‘‘In our hay contracting business we’ve had Krone mowers and rakes for 15 years and we’ve always bought them at Bertoli’s,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s probably their service and their parts. They have good parts back-up. ‘‘The Krone gear has been really good — that’s probably a big part of it. They have a lot of Krone gear that’s been good and the amount of parts they carry is really good. ‘‘As far as the length of the relationship, they have helped us over the years with some things . . . like getting us mowers in a hurry when we’ve had a couple of major incidents.’’ One of Mr Stecher’s favourite
machines is the Krone TC 500 mower conditioner. ‘‘The beauty of this mower is that it packs up to 2.5 m transport width, which is the only one that you can get that does it,’’ he said. ‘‘So it’s a 5 m cut and 2.5 m transport width, which is really good, and then it’s got the steel rollers in it for conditioning.’’ In terms of the season ahead, Mr Stecher said it was sitting ‘‘on a knife’s edge’’ but he was more optimistic than some other farmers he has talked to. ‘‘I think there is a fair bit of volatility in the market at the moment,’’ he said. ‘‘There’s people that think it’s not going to rain again and that there’s going to be a lot of big crops cut for hay, and that’s probably going to have a fairly big impact on the hay market and grain market. ‘‘But I think, in reality, we are only one or two good rains off it being the other way. ‘‘If we can get a couple of inches of rain between now and the end of October, that will set us up pretty well.’’

Rainfall will dictate hay season hile the 2018-19 hay W season was dominated by failed crops being cut early, the
result of the 2019-20 season will depend again on rainfall. That is according to Tim and Michael Gaffy, from Gaffy’s Tractor Hire, who provide both contracting and machinery hire for customers. ‘‘I think parts of the Mallee are good, the Wimmera is very good, north-west Victoria is bad — they just haven’t had the rain — and it’s patchy locally,’’ Michael said. ‘‘We went to Cobram yesterday (August 28) and there’s areas that the crops look brilliant and other areas within 10 km you can miss a rain and it makes all the difference to what your end crop is going to be.’’ Tim said a NSW farmer was going to have cut his wheat for hay because of a lack of rain. ‘‘Going into this season (whether crops are cut early) will depend on different areas having different rainfalls,’’ he said. ‘‘I was talking to a bloke up towards Deniliquin, who had a couple thousand acres of wheat that has basically run out of moisture. ‘‘He was going for grain but it will have to be cut for hay now.’’ Tim said the main equipment they hired out during hay season was tractors with loaders and a big square bale stacker, while on the contracting side of the business, the dual-roller system on the
Michael and Tim Gaffy, from Gaffy’s Tractor Hire, on their Mooroopna property. mower conditioner improved drytime. ‘‘We run Gaffy’s Tractor Hire, so we hire out tractors and a lot of seeding equipment and discs and spreaders and things but in the hay side, we also hire out a 8 x 4 x 3 big square bale stacker that stacks them up six high,’’ he said. ‘‘Then on the contracting side we’ve got a self-propelled windrower with a 30 ft front for canola and straw and lighter crops. ‘‘Then we’ve also got a 16 ft Massey Razorbar dual-roller conditioning mower.’’ Michael explained the benefits of the mower.
‘‘The fact it (self-propelled mower) has double rollers on it improves curing of the crop, which means we can get into pressing 48 hours earlier than you would have been,’’ he said. ‘‘And although we’ve had a very dry season, what normally happens you get into the hay season, you’re looking over to the west and there’s a rain front coming across and there will be a huge amount of hay cut but getting it into the bale is always the issue.’’ ‘‘In layman’s terms it cuts your dry-time by a couple of days which obviously means you can get it in the bale and in the shed or in a stack quicker,’’ Tim said.

benefit of covering haystacks cannot be underestimated. ‘‘Experience has shown that, in the past, cereal crops that are drought-stressed are more likely to produce high quality hay with a high sugar content,’’ specialist hay producer and Hay Caps inventor Phil Snowden said. ‘‘Extra care needs to be taken to ensure this hay is properly cured before baling. ‘‘These failed crops, although disappointing for the grain grower, can make the best quality cereal and canola hay if done on time, made properly and stacked under cover.’’ With farmers in NSW on zero water allocation, Mr Snowden said they would be relying on the feed they produced to get them through. ‘‘Protecting this hay from rain is paramount as the high sugar content means the hay is more likely to spontaneously combust if moisture gets into the bales.’’ The CFA said storing hay in a number of different locations and limiting the size of stacks would reduce the risk of losing all your hay if a fire does occur. The CFA also advised farmers not to store hay near vehicles, machinery and equipment and if there were signs the hay was starting to heat, pull the stack

A workshop will be held in Kialla on October 22 on the benefits of maize silage for dairy herds.
Maximising maize silage
Pioneer Seeds, Feedworks and Forage Lab Australia will host a silage growing and feeding workshop for dairy farmers next month, featuring a guest speaker from the United States. To be held on October 22 at Kialla’s The Woolshed, the workshop will feature Dr Mike Allen, from Michigan State University, presenting on the benefits of maize silage in the feed ration in terms of animal health effects and feed quality.
Seeds at this year’s Henty Machinery Field Days and Elmore Field Days. The Albury company will release its SilverLand GT and SilverSky lucerne varieties, which will complement the Silverado and Silverosa GT varieties it already stocks. The Silver lucernes were bred by Dr Ian Kaehne to create truly multi-purpose plants, drawing on his 40-plus years’ experience in lucerne science and breeding. ‘‘We launched our new lucerne varieties in northern NSW . . . at one of Australia’s biggest field days, AgQuip,’’ Upper Murray Seeds’ northern NSW area manager and agronomist Tony Christian said.
He said farmer and grower comments were really positive and included: ➤ ‘‘The 11 (SilverSky) is powering along in the cold conditions, it’s obviously as winter-active as you claim. ➤ ‘‘SilverLand GT is the real deal in terms of grazing-tolerant lucerne. Looks like you could graze it every day of the week because of its low crown. New Zealand, with the appointment of a new leader across the Case IH and New Holland brands. Brandon Stannett was appointed managing director of agriculture for Australia and New Zealand, in a new position created as part of a global restructure announced in January. At that time, CNH Industrial revealed changes to its organisational structure across the five segments of its operations, in a bid to become closer to its customers, streamline decision-making processes and encourage faster and more market-focused innovations. Silica and calcium work together hen farmers think of W guano products, the focus tends to be on
guano as a phosphorus source. Then the questions arise: how available is it, and what form does it take? Seabird guano has a higher ratio of citric-soluble phosphorus than nonseabird guano, which is higher in non-citric-soluble phosphorus. However, when looking at seabird guano we need to look beyond the phosphorus percentage and focus a little on the calcium and the silica and how these elements work together. By weight, calcium and silica in a good quality Guano Gold make up more than 50 per cent of the product. Adding the calcium percentage to the silica percentage is a good test of how well the Guano Gold you want to buy is going to perform. Generally, if the silica level is low then the phosphorus available, in terms of citric-soluble verses non-citric-soluble, will be low. So, what are the benefits of calcium and silica? Rather than look at each element, let’s look at how they interact.
Part of the Guano Gold mine in Madura, Indonesia. Jian Feng Ma and Eiichi Takahashi, from Kyoto University in Japan, used soft X-ray irradiation for detection of silica bodies. They tested shoots and leaves from plants treated with high calcium and low silica, low calcium, high silica and then equal
amounts of calcium and silica. The theory behind the testing was to show that the plant would use silica as a preference in physical structural development instead of calcium. The results showed that even if calcium levels where
applied in field trails at 6.5 times the level of silica, silica was still significantly present in the flag leaves of cereals. It concluded that increased silica resulted in reduced calcium in the shoots and developing leaves.
It could be drawn from this that the addition of the silica with the calcium leaves more calcium available for metabolic functions in the plant as the silica forms silica bodies in the leaf blades. The movement of calcium in the plant is relative to
transpiration rate — increased transpiration (movement of water) slows calcium movement. Calcium is required by the plant for fruit and grain set. If transpiration is affected by excessive evapotranspiration (elevated temperature and water stress) then less calcium is available to increase both yield and fruit or seed quality. It logically follows that increased available silica reduces the distance calcium needs to move in the plant (long flow) and also silica due to its placement and structure reduces evapotranspiration (drought tolerance). So to conclude, silica and calcium used together, such as is available in seabird Guano Gold, increase the plants’ silica structure and increases tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses but doesn’t affect available calcium, however, it enhances the flow and movement of calcium at critical times such as seed or fruit set. — Robert Drewitt Guano Australia agronomist
