Healthy outlook for hay season

south-east South Australia, central South Australia, south-west Western Australia and north-west Tasmania, according to Dairy Australia.

Crops on the Darling Downs and in central-west NSW are struggling and are in need of some decent rainfall in the next couple of weeks.

Cereal hay prices have firmed in Bega and central South Australia. Price changes have also been noted in central-west NSW recently.

There is a lot of hay being transported around the country of varying quality.

Dairy Australia cautions buyers and recommend feed-testing and viewing fodder before purchasing to be sure of quality of the feed.

Dairy Australia makes the following observations about the season for southern Australia:

➤ This season’s hay is limited in supply and there is limited carryover from previous years. ➤ There was a lot of high-moisture hay baled this year with inoculants in southern Australia. If the hay has a high moisture content but is not hot it should be safe. This hay should be sold on a dry matter basis. ➤ Securing long-term, reliable supplies of quality hay may well be an issue for parts of the south. ➤ Late rains moistened soils and provided an autumn break for farmers in parts of the south of the nation. Some regions in the south have missed out on these rains and sowing percentages are down in these areas. ➤ There are farmers who have sown dual purpose crops rather than their usual rotations for next season. ➤ Next season’s crops have germinated in parts of the region. These crops are currently looking healthy in parts of the region that experienced their autumn break.

Hoping for a good September

‘‘Grain and hay crops are all pushing towards reasonable levels. ‘‘We still need September to be good to us.’’

Even if September rains do not eventuate, Mr Talarico said farmers would have more success than last year. ‘‘This growing season compared to last year has been a hell of a lot better. ‘‘They (crops) won’t be a complete failure. ‘‘There has been enough rain that crops will amount to something.

‘‘The next six weeks will really determine if it goes from an average or reasonable crop to a really good one.’’

While rains will be welcomed for most of September, rain that arrives at the end of the month could be damaging. ‘‘Silage is harvested in late September, hay in October and November for hay and grain after that,’’ Mr Talarico said. ‘‘You can have a good crop but if you get rain at the wrong times it can damage the quality but at this stage things are going along nicely.’’

eptember may be an important month when it comes to football codes, but it is set to play a huge role in the outcome of hay, silage and grain crops this season.

WB Hunters field services manager Graeme Talarico said the growing season had been a positive one to date. ‘‘In the Shepparton area and north-east zone, where I cover, it is looking quite good,’’ he said. ‘‘May to August has been really good. We’ve had a really good growing season.

A job ‘very well’ done rank Fanning has put the town of F Kyabram on the map after winning the Best Lucerne Hay Feed Test

Analysis and the Best Lucerne Visual Appearance in Victoria and across Australia at the 2018-19 Feed Central National Hay Quality awards.

His contractor Alex Peacock, from Peacock Transport & Hay Contracting at Rochester, said the whole process, from planting to harvest, had to be done in a timely matter. ‘‘The whole process has to be done right

and you’ve got to have a bit of luck with the weather,’’ Mr Peacock said. ‘‘It’s not just baling, you’ve got to have the timing of planting and cutting right. ‘‘It’s hard to just give one tip. ‘‘If the crop’s not right, the hay is not going to be right.’’

Mr Peacock, who has done contracting work for the Fannings for more than 10 years, said this was not Mr Fanning’s first victory in the awards. ‘‘Frank’s won a couple of times now and he does the job very well.’’

Tough season helps

owlong’s Richard Baker took H advantage of the difficult conditions to dominate the 2018-19 Feed Central National Hay Quality Awards.

Mr Baker was awarded the national and NSW awards for the Best Cereal Hay Feed Test Analysis, as well as the Best Canola Hay Feed Test Analysis and the Best Cereal Hay Visual Appearance.

He said he was surprised by his results. ‘‘I knew we had good hay but I didn’t realise it was that good.’’

Mr Baker said frosts, as well as dry conditions, had helped him achieve a personal best in terms of hay quality.

‘‘(Our results were) mainly weather related. ‘‘We put a lot of fertilisers on it and the frost locks in the sugar and makes better quality hay. ‘‘We haven’t been near that quality before.’’

Mr Baker said the tough season had improved the quality. ‘‘It makes better quality hay but it’s harder to make it (in a tough season). ‘‘Frosts make it hard to keep the sap out of it and there’s less growth there, which made better quality hay.’’

was pleasing to get recognised for the second straight year.

Mr Donald, who was awarded the Best Lucerne Hay Feed Test Analysis for NSW at the recent Feed Central National Hay Quality Awards, said the recognition showed the family business was on track. ‘‘We are still happy about it,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s good to get some industry recognition.

‘‘It shows we are on track with what we are trying to achieve here. ‘‘Hay is our passion so trying to get that as good as we can (is the goal).’’

While lucerne is what got the Donalds the award in 2018-19, as well as the previous year’s national and state title, the family also grows cereal and pasture hay as well. ‘‘Hay would be 70 per cent of our yearly turnover, the rest is sheep and bit of contract work,’’ Mr Donald said. ‘‘We have been diversifying into smaller bales over the last few years (as well).’’

The award was announced at the recent 2018-19 Feed Central National Hay Quality awards and Mr Radcliffe, who owns Tyisha Pastoral Company with his brother Brett, said the crop of Sea Lake’s Grant Alday was destined for success. ‘‘It wasn’t surprising,’’ he said.

‘‘You don’t normally see canola hay at that quality, we struck lucky. ‘‘Grant made the decision to cut it early, which you have to with canola. ‘‘There was no leaf loss prior to baling and the weather was on our side. ‘‘You can’t do that sort of hay without weather.’’

Mr Radcliffe said hay was better for livestock when made in a drought year. ‘‘You get better quality hay in drought conditions,’’ he said. ‘‘A drought-affected feed crop has a better feed test than a bulky rank crop.’’

machinery company Kuhn, the quest to produce top-quality, densely-packed and perfectlyshaped bales in all crop conditions is an ambition that’s inspired the development of what’s being described as the next generation of balers.

The new KUHN LSB 1290 iD large square baler comes with some innovative new features designed to boost efficiency, improve overall bale quality and ultimately increase profitability for producers.

Kuhn Farm Machinery marketing manager and baler product specialist Michael Murer explained the thinking behind this new machine. ‘‘In essence, this baler creates perfect high-density bales that need less handling, use less twine and ultimately reduce both transport costs and storage space,’’ Mr Murer said.

First and foremost is the LSB 1290 iD double plunger design, developed and patented by Kuhn, which produces bales 25 per cent denser than those from conventional machines. ‘‘Its special TWINPACT lunger is a patented system and a revolutionary development that creates 60 tonnes of even pressure across the entire bale, to create 25 per cent more density than competitor balers,’’ Mr Murer said.

The machine’s main intake function is another key feature that sets it apart from its competitors. ‘‘Our integral rotor is a simple, maintenance-free intake system that ensures even feeding,

regardless of crop conditions,’’ Mr Murer said. ‘‘The short distance between rotor and pick-up yields an outstanding crop flow, and it also makes possible higher forward speeds, for outstanding productivity and reduced crop damage.’’

After the crop is gathered and pre-compressed in the prechamber, it’s moved upwards into the bale chamber in front of the plunger — and after reaching its pre-set length, the bale is secured by six twines and knotted by a double knotting system sourced from Rasspe.

The cutting version, called OmniCut, has 23 knives with individual hydraulic protection, which ensures a perfect cutting quality, regardless of working speed and crop.

4. Start with high quality forage ➤ Grow crops and pastures that

Incitec Pivot’s Lee Menhenett spoke on maximising production through strategic fertiliser and water use, understanding how pasture systems utilise nitrogen, rules around nitrogen and the links between water and nitrogen.

Mr Menhenett said the key driver behind profitability of nitrogen use was rates and timing. ‘‘If you don’t use it you lose it and if you get those things right, you will be able to kick some serious goals,’’ Mr Menhenett said.

David Lewis from Lallemand Animal Nutrition provided information on getting quality cereal silage into your stack through harvest timing decisions and quality over quantity, managing cereal silage if the season cuts out and increased ensiling challenges of cereals in the region.

Whole crop cereal silage can be ensiled at two stages: ➤ Flag leaf: Boot stage — lower yield, generally higher metabolisable energy (ME) and crude protein (CP). Cut crops at 10 cm height and use tedder immediately after mowing or a mower conditioner, harvest ideally with a precision chopper.

This is a difficult stage of growth to wilt because it is early in the season and Mr Lewis recommends

the use of silage additives if the silage isn’t wilted enough.

The stack should be sealed straight after harvest or bales must be wrapped in four to six layers at the site within hours of baling.

Avoid cutting at clear liquid stage because it often has low palatability. ➤ Late milk: Soft dough stage — higher yield, variable ME and lower CP. For the best results use a precision chop forage harvester with direct cutting front, a precision chopper with pick-up front can be used but mow only, leave swath wide and avoid raking to minimise leaf and grain loss.

The addition of aerobic spoilage inhibitor additives is beneficial.

Using a loader wagon is risky because the chop length is often too long and impossible to compact well, while the use of a baler can cause dry matter and quality losses through grain and leaf loss.

Mr Lewis recommends if storing in round bales to use normal additives to assist fermentation, while large square bales under sheets require aerobic spoilage inhibitor and vermin must be controlled because they will chew through the plastic to get to the grain. ➤ Continued on page 11.

at the workshop were David and Denise Gebbie from Timmering.

The dairy farmers are currently milking 300 cows.

They planted extra crop for hay this year to rebuild reduced fodder stocks, but they fear an early end to the irrigation season due to high water costs will force them into hand feeding earlier then they would like. ‘‘We have around 130 ha of crop for hay and another 40 ha of sub for silage,’’ Mr Gebbie said. ‘‘We planted extra oats to take through to hay this year and they are all looking fairly handy, as long as the rain keeps coming.’’

Business discussions at this stage have centred around using irrigation to finish off the crops to get hay on the ground if required. ‘‘At this stage we are anticipating keeping stock numbers the same but if things turn really bad we will be destocking like everyone else,’’ Mrs Gebbie said.

He also touched on the characteristics of different fodder types: ➤ Barley is okay to cut early, although it is low-yield and best suited for a whole crop high-starch yield. It has a short harvest window and the lowest NDF and is prone to lodging. ➤ Wheat is a good option for both early cut and whole crop. ➤ Triticale grazing helps quality on forage types; select grain variety for a whole crop. It has high lignin. ➤ Oats are a great option for higher protein and digestibility but not ideal as a whole crop due to low grain-to-plant ratio and dry at grain fill stage.

Grain types are generally suited for whole crops while forage varieties are more suited for early cut and grazing options.

Guano fuelled farming boom t was the best of times, it was the Iworst of times.

These might have been the thoughts of the guano miners shovelling and bagging guano from caves to load into bags to bring back to Europe to fertilise crops.

In 1609, Peruvian guano was first discovered by the western world, however, the Incas had been using guano for centuries with strict rules around protecting the seabirds that nested on the islands.

The guano trade began in a commercial form in 1840, when the United States started using guano as its main source of fertiliser.

The use of guano created an agricultural boom.

The US President at the time, Millard Fillmore, said in Congress: ‘‘The duty of the government is to employ all means properly in its power to assure guano is imported into this country at a reasonable price’’.

In 1856, the US Government passed the Guano Island Act, which allowed any unclaimed islands to be annexed.

So began the hunt for guano to feed the world’s crops.

Today, more than 150 years after the 1856 proclamation, the world still demands guano as a source of nutrition for crops and pasture.

Today, however, the world is a different place and deposits of guano are not as readily available.

Guano has two main types: the fresh guano from bats and birds that contains nitrogen, and older guano that has been either coralised or, in the case of inland deposits, formed into sedimentary rock deposits.

The older guanos are high in phosphorus and calcium but contain no nitrogen.

With respect to Australian agriculture, the focus is on the older forms that are imported as a source of fertiliser for both the organic and non-organic farming industry.

The current imported guanos fall into two main categories: inland — mainly Chinese — guano, and coastal or seabird guano from South-East Asia.

The CLAAS DISCO MOVE mower will dance through a paddock with minimum effort for maximum result.

The headstock can be coupled either directly to the tractor front linkage or using an A-frame. ‘‘The handy adjustment guide allows you to set the front link arms at the right height from the tractor cab,’’ Mr Caffery said. ‘‘The front linkage now remains fixed during operation, with the mower raised and lowered via

Reliability is vital to success ith 900 hungry cows in the W herd and seven employees to manage in the business,

machinery reliability is an important factor in Andrew Newnham’s dairy operation.

The Lancaster farmer runs a cutand-carry operation on about 480 ha of owned and leased land, sown to wheat, vetch and lucerne.

A key part of the operation is the New Holland-Pottinger tractor, mower and loader combination which brings in fresh feed for the dairy herd.

After a succession of poor seasons, the improved rainfall is promising a better year and Mr Newnham hopes to generate between 4500 and 5000 tonnes of silage.

His Pottinger loader wagon does about 1400 loads a year and there’s hardly a day goes by when it’s not operating, so he needs to rely on the machine and back-up service. ‘‘This machine runs every day of the year and I can’t just stop.

‘Tomorrow’ is not an option.

Everything has to be done today,’’ he said. ‘‘We’ve been pretty happy with Chris Pettigrove at Echuca Rural Group. I think we’ve been dealing with Chris for about 25 years.’’'

Mr Newnham runs the Pottinger Faro loader wagon behind a New Holland 735 four-wheel drive tractor, with a Pottinger Alpha Motion mower hitched to the front.

Plan ahead for quality silage hen planning your spring W silage, the choice of silage method will depend on

machinery and contractors available and relative cost.

While bulk chopped silage may be a cheap option, wrapped bales will always incur the cost of plastic and therefore must be of premium feed quality to be profitable.

Early thinking about spring silage should include maintenance of machinery, storage areas and tracks, sourcing plastic, twine or net wrap and inoculants.

Growers making early and regular contact with contractors or vice-versa will help reduce problems when everyone is busy.

Choice of which paddocks to cut will consider the obvious topography, access and feedout issues, with some people preferring to cut convenient paddocks while others will graze close paddocks and cut further away to reduce stock walking.

Soil fertility and weed management are major considerations when we start getting into detail on paddock selection and management.

Silage removes large amounts of nutrients including nitrogen (N), phosphorous (P), potassium (K) and sulphur (S) which must be allowed for and monitored using soil tests.

It can be a great way to reduce nutrient build-up in effluent disposal areas provided withholding periods are observed to minimise animal health risks.

Good silage starts with early planning.

If potassium is needed, and it often is if silage or hay is regularly taken from a paddock, then split applications early in spring to allow growth and again after silage harvest to replace nutrients will reduce the risk of luxury uptake.

This is where the plant absorbs more K than it needs, meaning you lose fertiliser, while the silage has excess K with possible associated feed quality issues.

Nitrogen also needs to be applied sensibly.

Top-dressing early in spring to ensure good growth is usually

essential but excess nitrogen can interfere with silage fermentation and nitrate poisoning is a risk.

Both are unusual in Australian silage but should be considered.

Top-dressing rates for rye-grass will depend on if you take a grazing management priority and harvest at three leaves or want to optimise your yield of high quality silage and harvest at the boot or early head emergence stage of growth.

One guide to how much fertiliser should be applied after the grazing prior to silage harvest is to allow for the nutrients removed in the

silage, which would be 30 kg N/tonne DM if the silage was 19 per cent crude protein with about 25 kg K/tonne DM. We often underestimate how much N and K is removed in silage and hay.

Weed management is also a major consideration in paddock selection, both from a silage quality and weed control perspective.

Using silage for weed control is highly effective and becoming more important as increasing

herbicide resistance issues affect more farmers.

Silage will help reduce weeds in two ways.

Early harvest compared to hay means that often the weed seed is not fully developed and also the silage fermentation process will significantly reduce weed seed viability if there is any mature seed harvested.

From a silage quality perspective, grass weeds may not be a big issue, but broadleaf weeds can affect silage quality.

Many broadleaf weeds such as capeweed have a high buffering capacity and low WSC levels, making it hard to get a good fermentation.

Another question which sometimes influences paddock selection is disease or insect damage.

This especially applies to rust, where the general advice is to make a decision early and avoid badly infested crops because the rust on leaves is dead material which could have a negative effect on fermentation and feed quality, similar to any dead matter that is mixed in with silage.

Finally, when paddocks for silage are identified, make sure you remove hazards such as irrigation pipes, electric fence posts and pasture harrows, and mark rocks or stumps early while you can see them.
