Taking service and support to the next level Our main goal at Haeusler’s is providing our clients with a distinctively higher level of purchase and ownership experience for the equipment and services that we offer the Goulburn Valley farming industry. The commercial and lifestyle markets are our key targets for Haeusler Group operations. We pride ourselves on being able to provide distinctive value through our range of equipment, technology and dealer services which we are invested in and committed to, enabling the Haeusler Group to be a relevant provider for farming, construction and lifestyle requirements through our customer industry segments. The construction and opening of the new business premises at 375 Goulburn Valley

Hwy, Shepparton North, is a significant commitment to continue to invest in the agricultural industry potential of the region by the directors of the company. Haeusler’s acquired the John Deere franchise from Northern Ag in May 2000 at the location of 219 Numurkah Rd, which is in sight from today’s new premises. For the past 18 years the dealership has operated from the same premises which has witnessed the growth of business development and the subsequent increase in staff, which brought with it pressures of space and facilities. With an eye on the future, the then vacant undeveloped land of the new premises was purchased for a future build of a greenfield dealership which would provide potential to provide a state-of-the-art modern dealership to continue to grow the business and provide a comfortable and safe working environment for all staff and clients. In recent times the restriction of workshop space and office layout compelled the need for the directors of the company to act on the potential of the vacant land. The first thing that is evident is the size

of the showroom, this is apparent when entering through the front doors and seeing the vast amount of new equipment on static display. The size of the equipment able to be on showroom display is no longer compromised and limited; the largest combine harvester and platform and selfpropelled sprayer with spray booms fully folded out can be accommodated. The service centre and parts facility are the engine room of the operation and have been well designed for space, comfort and operational efficiency. The after-market support of the equipment we retail in the different markets is the key to our relevancy as a solution option for our clients. Providing our staff with training, hardware, connectivity and other diagnostic tools to better support our products in the field is the commitment of Haeusler’s Group and our key strategic focus. During the past decade the service department has been focused on recruitment, training and process structure to provide the best after-market support in

the farming industry. Improved equipment monitoring technology through JD Link and other software platforms allow Haeusler’s to provide a complete solution for most farming operations which can be tailored to the exact needs of the client. The expectation is that “if we sell it we support it” and ensure that it works efficiently and optimally when it is needed to perform in the field. It is exciting to think what the new premises will bring to our Shepparton dealership operation. It’s a big shot in the arm of excitement and pride for all our employees and will potentially attract skilled and talented employee recruitments to all areas of our operation. Haeusler’s Shepparton has put down its roots in a permanent owned facility and we look forward to the challenge and the potential of the local industry and what it may bring. Focus is always on customers The new, custom-built Haeusler’s premises on Goulburn Valley Hwy is all about the customers. Having leased a small site in Shepparton since taking over the dealership in 2001, Haeusler’s group sales manager Martin Haeusler said when the time came to find a bigger premises, they knew the sheer size of their machinery meant they would have to do a custom build. The end result is a massive 3240 sq m building on 4 ha of land at 375 Goulburn Valley Hwy, which the Haeusler’s team moved into over Christmas. Boasting a 1120 sq m showroom, a 1200 sq m workshop, ceilings up to 9.5 m high, more than 200 sq m of office space and roller doors front and back big enough to drive any of their huge machinery through, this was a building that looked to the future. “Some people have been amazed that it’s more than just a shed, it’s a proper facility,” Mr Haeusler said. “The customers we’ve had in here, they can see the level of our commitment to the area in this building.” He said while the building was fantastic to work in, the real benefit would be to the customers. “The more I can look after the community with better service, better facilities, better training — all of those things add up. My focus will always be on the customer.” Mr Haeusler was particularly looking forward to being able to host in-house customer service activities, with education and information provided by experts in the comfort of such a large facility, especially as they had actively tried to include subtle touches of convenience such as the baby change facilities. “We’ve got somewhere we can display our equipment better, we’ve got somewhere we can have customer events, we can have machine optimisation nights and show people how to download their data.” Group administrator Gary Van Steenis, who was the Haeusler’s representative for the 18-month build, said everything in the building was big enough for the foreseeable future, but they had also ensured the site could expand with them. With future growth in mind, the building includes 112 sq m of load-bearing unused mezzanine space that could be utilised for display or future office space plus plenty of

surplus office space and lots of spare room outside that could be repurposed in the future, he said. “It’s big and it’s impressive and there’s room to grow both now and in the future,” Mr Van Steenis said.

A new era in service

Business continues to grow CM & JM Haeusler was the original business trading name that Colin and Joan Haeusler selected for their newly opened grain trading and transport venture located at 34 Best St, Sea Lake, in 1959. Colin’s business knowledge and Joan’s organisational skills were a perfect match and soon other trading line possibilities opened for them. In 1961 the Chamberlain Tractors & Implements franchise was acquired, and business prospered to the extent that in 1967 the award for the best Chamberlain dealer in Victoria was achieved. Soon after Chamberlain merged with John Deere in 1970, Haeusler’s Farm Supplies became the appointed John Deere dealer in the area and added farm chemical, hardware, electrical, fertiliser and fuel business lines to the portfolio. In 1993, an opportunity to open a John Deere dealership in Mildura presented itself and present-day directors Martin Haeusler and Lawrence Haeusler relocated to grow the footprint of Haeusler’s Farm Supplies to the far north sections of the Mallee and southern NSW. During the 1990s a new building premises was constructed in Sea Lake which forms the current dealership and the Mildura dealership business growth continued to prosper to the extent there was a need to relocate to the current dealership site on Eleventh St. In 2001 Haeusler’s successfully acquired the John Deere franchise in Shepparton, taking over the reins from Northern AG, and operated in the same business site as a rental tenant. This was the company’s first experience with the hay and dairy production segments of the farming industry and was certainly different to the broadacre and viticultural

industries at the Sea Lake and Mildura dealerships. Mid Murray Machinery at Echuca was the next business acquisition of the Haeusler Dealer Group and was welcomed into the business operations in 2007. This acquisition was pivotal in regard to making the dealer group contiguously linked from the northern Mallee, through the North Central and into the Goulbourn Valley regions of Victoria and southern NSW. The introduction of satellite operations at Robinvale and Bendigo also extended the footprint of Haeusler’s Dealer Group which now overlays about 40 per cent of Victoria and potentially 10 000 farming operations inside this region. In 2017, a group management strategy was introduced with a corporate support office commissioned in Mildura separate to the local dealership, with group management empowered to assist with streamlining resources and operational support for the individual dealerships. This year will mark the 60-year anniversary of the Haeusler business commencing from a husband-and-wife partnership in Sea Lake to the present-day six-dealership operation employing more than 140 staff across the fertile food producing regions of the southern states.

Strong family values drive business Siblings Margaret, Lawrence and Martin are proud to be carrying on the family business that started with their parents, Colin and Joan Haeusler, in the broadacre farming region of Sea Lake in north-west Victoria in 1959. Beginning as a general cartage and grain handling business, Haeusler’s soon became an agent for Chamberlain Tractors, which merged with John Deere in the 1970s, and expanded into chemical and farm supplies, hardware and electrical, fertiliser, freight, transport, grain handling and a petrol outlet. The business opportunity that came with John Deere was a big step for the Haeusler’s brand, and Lawrence believes it was a turning point in the direction the company has headed in. “It gave us the benefit of engaging with a multi-national company that leads the farming industry with cutting-edge technology,” Lawrence said. As the business went from strength to strength, the need for more space was recognised and multiple locations were

added. With the death of their father Colin in 1999, the three siblings have continued to steer the business in the right direction, expanding with dealerships established in Mildura in 1993, Shepparton in 2001, Robinvale in 2002, and Echuca in 2007. Today the combined service area spans more than 10 000 sq km, taking up almost half of Victoria alone, and employing about 150 people. But at the heart of the operation lies core family values that Lawrence believes sets them apart from competitors. “Being a family-oriented business, we are not as bureaucratic as some other companies,” he said. “We have an intimate relationship with our customers. We have a direct customer focus; we run a business as it should be run even though sometimes emotion can override progress.” Looking forward, as the current generation of management looks to move on, Lawrence and his siblings are preparing for the future of the company. “At the moment we are in the process of setting up for the continuation of the business,” he said. “We are looking at how we currently manage succession and setting career paths for the next generation of leaders for Haeusler’s. The most important thing for us is how we manage expectations.”

Taking technology to the next level The new generation of Australian farmers are all about embracing technology, and Haeusler’s is ready to be part of that future. Haeusler’s’ group service manager Jason Hannig — who is responsible for the service departments in Shepparton, Echuca, Mildura and Sea Lake — said one of the most exciting parts of the new Shepparton building would be the tech room, fully kitted out in coming months to allow staff to provide Connected Support for John Deere customers. Mr Hannig said Connected Support was the ability to connect with John Deere equipment remotely, and was comprised of five different capabilities. JDLink provides a link between the tractor and the technician and provides alerts and monitoring diagnostic codes; Remote Display Access allows technicians to “see exactly what the driver saw”; Remote Programming lets technicians update software from afar; Service Adviser Remote can remotely read and reset diagnostic trouble codes and record performance readings; while Expert Alerts provide prognostic and proactive problem alerts. John Deere remote monitoring capability was first established in 2012 and had grown immensely in its abilities and applications since then, Mr Hannig said. “Connected Support sets John Deere apart from the competitors; nobody else can offer what we do, especially in relation to the expert alerts.” He said being able to keep an eye on customers’ machinery remotely was something that was only going to get bigger and better in the future, especially as it was very popular with larger operations who had multiple operators and machines because it helped them keep an eye on things. “The smaller farms are becoming bigger farms, who typically have a lot of staff and contractors, and they find that Connected

Support really helps them manage their staff and their equipment. “We can monitor their machines remotely and see that the machine has done a certain amount of hours making it due for a prepaid service and then we can call the owner and let them know and have everything ready.” Other bonuses were being able to monitor the health of a machine and predict that it was going to fail before it did with the Expert Alerts, he said. Technicians could even watch the tractor display while the driver was using it to help with things such as intermittent problems. “We can step customers through set-up and calibration which is great and we can diagnose problems from here,” Mr Hannig said. “We can see when a piece of equipment has done a certain amount of hours and is going to need a service and that way we can schedule it when it suits the customer and we can already know what parts we will need and have them ready to take with us rather than getting there and then finding out. “If you’ve got the subscription there and we can see what the fault code is with our system and it can save you time and money because we can see the fault straight away and start doing something about it, we can do some work on it before we even travel out.” Mr Hannig said the introduction of technology was the single biggest change in agricultural machinery during the past decade or more. “Fifteen years ago auto-steering was unheard of and now you’d hardly find anyone who doesn’t have it. Mechanically harvesters haven’t changed a lot in recent years, but the level of technology in them has changed enormously. “We’re seeing the next generation of farmer coming through and they’ve gone to uni and come back onto the farm and they’re adopting technology in a way that their parents didn’t necessarily do.”

Congratulations

Group service manager Jason Hannig.

Taking care of business John de Haan is the branch facilitator for Haeusler’s in Shepparton and Echuca, which means he is responsible for wellbeing of staff, managers and customers, and has been with the company for more than 12 months. Having been around agricultural machinery his whole life, a big part of Mr de Haan’s job at Haeusler’s is handling the ‘nuts and bolts’ like building and vehicle maintenance. He has acquired the skillset for this as a farmer of 25 years, as well as working in the agricultural machinery industry for the past 12 years as a machinery parts salesman and sales manager. “There have been huge changes in the progression of farm equipment,” Mr de Haan said. “Tractors now steer themselves; they have airconditioning and Bluetooth capabilities. The biggest change has to be in the advancement of electronics.” Not only handy with a wrench in hand, Mr de Haan is responsible for other various duties integral to Haeusler’s. As branch facilitator, he helps resolve customer issues as well as dealing with internal and external staff concerns — liaising with about 60 staff in Echuca and Shepparton with regular “health checks”. He firmly believes the environment employees work in is crucial to the success of a business, and the Shepparton relocation brought about a much-needed breath of fresh air for staff and customers alike.

“It is like chalk and cheese. The new building has probably had a huge impact on the staff,” Mr de Haan said. “Before they were all mingled together, to the extent that they were nearly living in each other’s pockets. Now they’ve got space to breathe … it’s given them space, it’s given them brand new facilities.” Throughout the building, floor heating and airconditioning systems have been installed to ensure optimum comfort levels for staff. “When you are hot and bothered, you don’t perform; when you are freezing cold, you don’t perform — all you can think about is the end of the day,” Mr de Haan said.

Big showroom for big machinery If customers are left a little bit speechless when they open the front door to the new Haeusler’s showroom in Shepparton, sales representative Colin Downs will be a happy man. In fact, he is hoping they will be completely awestruck, because for the first time he is going to be able to showcase the machinery the way it deserves. “If you’re going to buy a decent car, it’s normally presented in a showroom,” Mr Downs said. “These toys cost a bit more than your normal car, so we’ve got to up the ante a bit and make sure we can present it in a good way.” The new 1120 sq m showroom, with its massive roller doors, will be able to fit just about anything the team at Haeusler’s could sell, save the odd unusual order. But the space is not just an opportunity to show off — it is also an opportunity to ensure that when a customer buys a piece of equipment, it will be in pristine condition. “It’s about looking after the machinery for the customer. At the end of the day we don’t own it, they do, so we’ve got to make sure we’re looking after their possession,” Mr Downs said. Having been in agricultural machinery and parts sales in Shepparton for 13 years, Mr Downs said the equipment had been getting bigger and bigger and the old premises could only fit parts and small tractors inside it. “Physically the toys are just getting too big so now we’ve got the room to accommodate any size machine in an environment where we can do the right job correctly,” he said. “Before we were physically going up and up

and running out of room and so hopefully now we can store more parts, more of the right parts and larger parts. “There’s always going to be that one piece of machinery that a customer orders that won’t fit through the door, but it’s a 4.7 m roller door so most things we’re hoping will fit in through the roller door.” He was looking forward to giving customers a better experience, providing better care for the machinery and having the ability to house a more extensive range of spare parts. “We can see the customers coming in, we’ve got our personal own offices and we can showcase the best of the machinery in comfort now. “We are showing that we are moving forward, we are showing growth.”

Looking after machinery and staff When you have customers spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on a piece of equipment they rely on for their livelihood, it is important you make a big effort to look after it. Which is something Haeusler’s Shepparton is more than capable of doing with its new Goulburn Valley Hwy site, according to Jason Hannig, the group service manager responsible for service departments in Shepparton, Echuca, Mildura and Sea Lake. Not only does the new premises have a huge lockable outdoor area, but the new 1200 sq m workshop and massive roller door entry mean most equipment can be kept under cover and out of the elements when it is brought in for repairs and servicing. “If a customer has a $650 000 machine, you don’t want it out in the weather,” Mr Hannig said. “That’s probably the best thing to come out of it, a lot more work can be done in-house now.” He said the undercover lockable area was particularly important when it came to servicing equipment such as harvesters, because it often involved a reasonably lengthy period of work. With the old workshop being only about a quarter of the size of the new showroom, Mr Hannig said the old space had truly outlasted its usefullness. “If we were going to do something like an overhaul of a transmission you had to wait until a spot in the workshop became available in the right part of the shed,” he said. “Sometimes a job would have to get packed up to make room for another one that took priority and that affected overall productivity too.” After 14 years with Haeusler’s, Mr Hannig has worked his way up from Sea Lake apprentice to his current position of group service manager for Shepparton, Echuca, Mildura and Sea Lake and responsible for 65 staff, including 15 in Shepparton. But he has not forgotten what it was like to be a young apprentice diesel mechanic working in the old Sea Lake premises, which had a low ceiling and no airconditioning. He Said the biggest feedback he’d had from the Shepparton service staff regarding the new building had been how much they enjoyed working in airconditioning, especially during the recent extreme heat conditions, and the big new tea room had been a real hit too. “I know what it’s like to work in tough conditions,” Mr Hanning said. “It matters, if you’re working and you know that at smoko or lunch you’re going to be able to go and sit in a nice tea room and take a break, it gives you light at the end of the tunnel. Otherwise the day just drags on and you can’t sustain that.” Because the mining industry stole much of the potential employee pool, Haeusler’s was working hard to ensure it offered a good place to work. Mr Hannig said part of that was accounting for the “little things” like airconditioning, work-life balance and a decent tea room. “They’re all a lot more comfortable working, the staff feedback has all been great so far. It will make a big difference in staff attraction and retention in the long run,” he said. “We’re hoping to draw more technicians here, that’s been a problem in the past.”

Better working environment

Service manager Sam Pepperell. Picture: Megan Fisher

If there is one person who knows the value of a work environment with lots of space and comfort, it is Haeusler’s Shepparton’s service manager Sam Pepperell. With a staff of 12 diesel mechanics who work on huge farming equipment yearround, no matter the weather conditions, Mr Pepperell is enjoying the new Haeusler’s workshop. Twice the size of the old workshop with airconditioning, heated floors and the ability to fit all the machinery they work on under cover, the new space has made life for his team a whole different ball game. “We can have the guys under cover now whereas before they would often be out in the sun in summer and out in the cold in winter,” Mr Pepperell said. “We still do a lot of servicing on site, that’s part of the role and obviously, distance-wise, you can’t bring everything into the shop.” In the old rented premises, they would often have to juggle space and would have to wait until one piece of machinery was finished before they could bring in another. Now, with room for everything in a space designed perfectly for them, Mr Pepperell was looking forward to being able to increase efficiency for customers. “It’s more efficient now, we can bring more machines in under cover and have more staff working on them,” he said. “I think we can definitely grow from where we are now; having the extra space is a big thing so this place will definitely open up some new avenues for us in the future.” He said efficiency was particularly important because farmers often needed the equipment repaired or serviced very quickly, especially during the harvesting season.

Part of the problem in the past was the space had not been able to keep up with the increasing size of the machinery they worked on. “In the old place we just got that tight — we were needing more room, parts were needing more room, so we were always fighting over the space,” Mr Pepperell said. “Now parts have got a nice big space of their own and so have we.” He said the space was so nice to work in, it would help with efficiency simply because the mechanics would be more comfortable and better able to perform at their best. Like many businesses, Haeusler’s has had to compete with lucrative mine work when recruiting staff. Mr Pepperell said attracting good staff was about more than just pay — having a great work site, combined with the variety of interesting work the Goulburn Valley could offer diesel mechanics, meant he was looking forward to Haeusler’s being more attractive to potential employees. “Shepparton is such a diverse region. We have so many different industries, you’ve got everything from orchards to vineyards, mixed farms, dairy, broadacre — so you get a really good mix. “You don’t just have to work on the same thing over and over. We do put a fair bit into training, just because of the broad range of machines that we work on.” Mr Pepperell grew up in Colbinabbin, completed his apprenticeship with Haeusler’s and has spent a total of 11 years with the company in Shepparton.

More room for spare parts This year is going to be a big one for the Shepparton Haeusler’s spare parts team, while they get busy filling up all the extra space they have with everything from the smallest screws to the biggest windscreens. With effectively double the space of their previous site, the three-person team can finally stop thinking about how to squeeze their existing stock in and start thinking about what stock they can add thanks to all the extra space. Parts interpreter Dylan Edmunds, who has been in the role with Haeusler’s in Shepparton for five years, said he expected 2019 to be a period of rebuilding while they assessed what extra stock they should carry. He said many of the parts they provided were “maintenance parts” such as filters, as well as parts for companies who specialised in rebuilding machinery. Shepparton parts manager Brad Kennedy said his favourite thing about his job was being able to make his customers happy. “They want to be able to come right in and get what they need and get going; avoiding lengthy down time is what we are all after,” Mr Kennedy said. “I started in 2011 and I reckon back then we

were getting close to running out of space. “When there’s a new model it means new parts; it’s not very often they roll over the same parts for a new tractor so when they make a new tractor we have to get all new parts.” Working as a parts interpreter offered a great amount of variety and the chance to play detective, Mr Kennedy said. “Basically, when something breaks down on a tractor you’ll quite often get someone with no mechanical knowledge and they say ‘it’s the thingy next to this shaped thing on the’ — and you’ve got to try and go from there and figure out what part it is in the manual that they need. “No two jobs are the same. “They’re big on email now, obviously with technology we can video call, they can send photos of the item, life is getting easier for us with technology.”

End result is reward for hard work Building the new Haeusler’s Shepparton premises was a huge learning curve for one employee in particular. Group administrator Gary Van Steenis had been toying with different ideas for a new building for much of his eight years with Haeusler’s, before it was decided to go ahead with the development. That homework, and his meticulous tendencies, made him the perfect choice to manage the Haeusler’s end of the project — which saw him learn about everything from floor heating to council approval processes. “There was a lot to learn; we had to widen the highway so there was even roadworks involved,” Mr Van Steenis said. “From the moment we spoke to builders to the moment we moved in took about 18 months.” A mammoth task to complete the build on the 4 ha site, Mr Van Steenis said one of the hardest parts was often finding the right person to talk to, but once he had, it was a much easier process. “The people we worked with were great,” he said. “I’m proud of the fact that it’s up and running now and there’s room to grow both now and in the future.

Group administrator Gary Van Steenis managed the project from Haeusler’s end.

“I have had feedback from one customer who said that we were really lucky to have something like this and the feedback from

staff has been really positive so that’s great.” One of the features of the building is the hydronic floor heating system, which heats

wastewater from the service department and pumps it though the flooring throughout the building.

Forging a new partnership The dealer relationship Haeusler’s has with Wacker Neuson is relatively new. But despite only working together since May 2017, the partnership is proving an important one for both businesses. Wacker Neuson Australia and New Zealand national sales manager Henry Placek said Haeusler’s sold its telehandlers, excavators and wheel loaders, largely for the agricultural market. “Our point of difference, and what appealed to Haeusler’s, is the range we are able to offer compared to others; none of our competitors does the whole fleet,” Mr Placek said. He said the broad range offered through Haeusler’s, from small one to two

tonne excavators through to eight tonne excavators and nine tonne wheel loaders, were also sought after by contractors such as plumbers and concreters. “We are in the early stages of our partnership, but it’s working well,” Mr Placek said. “The quality of our product, the training we offer and Haeusler’s’ ability to service the equipment allows us all to give the customer what they want.” Wacker Neuson participates in dealer trade days at Haeusler’s and has conducted joint trade exhibitions at the Elmore Field Days and the Mallee Machinery Field Days.

The Wacker Neuson EZ 17 excavator suits a variety of industries.

Growing stronger together The partnership between Haeusler’s Shepparton and Kuhn continues to strengthen, along with the market share of each entity. Kuhn’s Australian managing director Bruno Fetiveau said the association spanned more than 10 years and now Haeusler’s was one of the leading sellers of Kuhn equipment in Australia. “Kuhn is an international company with 12 manufacturing sites across the world and 5000 employees,” Mr Fetiveau said. “We are the largest implement manufacturer in the world, and our extensive product list covers all aspects of farming from soil preparation to harvest, and everything in between.” Offering innovative solutions for almost every agricultural application Kuhn’s range supports the region’s broadacre, horticulture, vegetable, dairy, livestock and hay production operators. Haeusler’s Shepparton sells and services Kuhn’s complete Australian product range and stocks a full catalogue of spare parts. Four Victorian-based Kuhn staff — including a sales representative, technician, sprayer specialist and livestock specialist — are in regular contact with their counterparts at Haeusler’s Shepparton.

Kuhn’s in-field technical support team Brent Fazakerley, Graham Free, Jason Vowles and Danny Tranter are regular visitors to Haeusler’s Shepparton. This in-field technical support team provides specialised products training either in-house at Haeusler’s Shepparton or at Kuhn’s Deer Park facility to ensure staff are up-to-date with all advancements.

A shared commitment Haeusler’s and Ballaratbased company Goldacres have worked together for more than 20 years and share several similarities. Both are family owned and operated enterprises and are committed to offering an extensive product range and back-up

support to their customers. Goldacres’ sales and marketing manager Stephen Richards said the business was founded by his father John Richards in St Arnaud in 1978 and had evolved to now produce spray equipment for many different applications. The company’s flagship self-propelled model is the only one of its type manufactured in Australia. Goldacres also has a range of trailing,

three-point linkage and tray-mounted sprayers, as well as spot sprayers for garden and hobby farm use. “Our product range is extensive and diverse; from the very big to the very small, we have every need covered,” Mr Richards said. “Haeusler’s has access to our full range of spraying equipment from sales to service and spare parts.” Mr Richards said Goldacres valued knowledge, and offered ongoing training to

the staff at Haeusler’s. The company also hosts on-farm demonstrations so farmers can view the practical applications of machinery firsthand, ask any questions they may have and determine which model best suits their individual businesses. Mr Richards said Goldacres largely serviced the broadacre, livestock farming and vegetable growing sectors, through its partnership with Haeusler’s Shepparton.
