Thirty years and business continues to roll on

Graham Thomson Motors’ owner Glenn Leake and general manager Gerard Michel are significant contributors to 30 years of success at the Shepparton-based dealership.

espected Shepparton company Graham Thomson Motors has clocked up an impressive 30 years in business.

And what makes the achievement all the more remarkable is its core business operates in one of the region’s most competitive industries, transport.

Local truck fleets and owner operator ventures have prospered, in part due to the solid relationships built with Graham Thomson Motors’ staff.

General manager Gerard Michel said the firm’s success could be attributed to supplying quality trucks and backing that up with efficient after-sales service.

“It’s all about relationships, good product, good backup, good people,” Mr Michel said.

Those sentiments are reiterated by loyal customers,

some of whom have been dealing with Graham Thomson Motors and, prior to that, Bryan Thomson Motors, for more than 40 years.

The “good product” is the dealership’s long-standing affiliation with PACCAR, manufacturers of premium Kenworth prime movers and importers of DAF trucks.

Kenworth’s marketing strategy revolves around the predominantly Australian-manufactured trucks being made here to suit Australia’s tough conditions.

And it’s not only the customers’ loyalty which has contributed to the firm’s success.

When you scroll through the staff employee records you will find members with long a history with Graham Thomson Motors.

According to Gerard Michel there have been highs and lows in the 30-year journey.

The relocation of the business, in 1997, to new purpose-built premises on the corner of Doyles and New Dookie Rds was a proud day for then-owners Graham and Joy Thomson.

The sudden death of managing director Graham Thomson five years later was a significant blow, but due to his unique management style and the autonomy he had granted the leaders of each division, the business was able to continue.

There have been numerous awards along the way,

most notably the PACCAR Kenworth Dealer of the Year, won for the fifth time in 2013. The sales, service and spare parts offices all display individual awards.

The dealership operates from a prominent site on Shepparton’s main truck route. Gleaming new and used prime movers and immaculately maintained grounds give a professional first impression. Head indoors and the order continues. Spare parts are neatly stored, there is a place for every tool in the workshop and there is a positive, cohesive manner among the staff.

Describing the camaraderie among the staff, sales manager Gary Nickson probably sums it up best.

“We all work closely together, the success of our own divisions are all relative to each other’s success.”

Family linked to growth of region’s transport industry Construction of the new facility was a highlight for owners Graham and Joy Thomson.

The history of Shepparton business Graham Thomson Motors is closely intertwined with the family after which it is named.

Several members of the Thomson family were involved in the formative years and contributed to its present reputation as a respected, awardwinning enterprise renowned for quality staff and service.

In 1964 Graham Thomson’s brother Bryan founded Shepparton Truck Sales and Service in Verney Rd. He later relocated to premises in Numurkah Rd and re-badged the business as Bryan Thomson Motors.

The business took on its first new truck franchise —Volvo — in 1972, and then in 1977 was appointed as the Kenworth dealer to service the expanding Shepparton transport industry.

Graham came into the business to assist his brother in sales, but with a wealth of experience in the industry, eventually bought and re-named the business in 1984.

About this time a third Thomson brother, Bruce, came on board as the company’s financial controller.

Graham and Bruce worked closely together to build on the strengths of the business, and added Mitsubishi trucks to the showroom in 1986.

Just over 10 years later, in 1997, Graham Thomson Motors had outgrown its home and moved to a purpose-built facility on the corner of New Dookie and Doyles Rds on Shepparton’s major truck route.

Graham’s wife, Joy, remembers business increased 30 per cent in that first year.

“We couldn’t believe the amount of traffic that went up and down Doyle’s Rd,” Mrs Thomson said.

In 2002, the sudden death of Graham was a blow but, thanks to his unique management style of allowing individual departments to operate autonomously, the business barely missed a beat.

The relationship with Kenworth has endured and the dealership now sells DAF trucks which are imported by PACCAR Australia, manufacturers of the Kenworth brand.

In 2011 Graham Thomson Motors was sold to Glenn and Rod Leake from Mildura.

While the sale ended the family’s connection with truck sales and service in Shepparton, the Thomsons’ involvement in the growth of the region’s strong transport industry is etched in history.

Business built on strong relationships Long-standing relationships are vital to the success of any business.

Graham Thomson Motors general manager Gerard Michel said the Shepparton firm considered itself a partner to its customers’ operations.

“It all comes back to relationships with customers — you can sell trucks to people, but if you don’t follow it up with good service from good people, then you lose them forever,” Mr Michel said.

Jeftomson Transport managing director Garry Parker said both businesses had similar core values.

“We place a high priority on being open and honest in all dealings. We have found that the team at Graham Thomson Motors will always stand by their word, and support their customers with any warranty issues that crop up from time to time,” Mr Parker said.

Jeftomson Transport specialises in the daily delivery of refrigerated produce to Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

“We are currently operating with a fleet of 19 trucks which are mostly Kenworth coupled with refrigerated Tautliners and vans. All of our new Kenworth prime movers have been purchased from Graham Thomson Motors over the last 10 years,” Mr Parker said.

He said the company relied on the service and spare parts divisions of Graham Thomson Motors to ensure trucks stayed on the road and delivery contracts were honoured.

the firm expected to move 15000 shipping containers between the Goulburn Valley and Port of Melbourne.

Those containers are transported by 30 prime movers — predominantly Kenworth Aerodynes — all purchased from Graham Thomson Motors.

Mr Hill said Kreskas Bros had been dealing with Graham Thomson Motors since the early 1970s when Bryan Thomson was at the helm.

He said they relied on the Shepparton dealership for spare parts, breakdown services, mechanical advice and warranty service on new units.

“Graham Thomson Motors is a local business we have partnered and grown with for 40 years. They offer personal service and have a great understanding of what we need to succeed in an extremely competitive industry,” Mr Hill said.

Trophy acknowledges decades of top service An impressive silver trophy takes pride of place in a glass display cabinet in Graham Thomson Motors’ Shepparton premises.

The award, presented earlier this year, is for the 2013 Kenworth Australian Dealer of the Year and represents outstanding sales, service and support.

It is the fifth time the firm has taken out the coveted prize. It also won the award in 1982 (when the business was named Bryan Thomson Motors), 1985, 1987 and 1997.

PACCAR is a multinational company which manufactures Kenworth and DAF vehicles.

Mr Michel attributes the most recent award to the firm’s consistency across all departments and its outstanding customer service.

“We don’t just sell trucks, service them and supply spare parts. We are a partner to our customers,” Mr Michel said.

“We are part of their business and we grow with their business as well. We don’t just sell them trucks and forget about them.

“It’s a great honour to be recognised as the leading dealer by Australia’s leading heavy-duty truck manufacturer. This is especially sweet for us — it is our first major award since our new owners took over in 2011.

“It’s testament that our dealership continues to deliver a high level of professionalism in not only truck and parts sales, but particularly customer service across all areas of the business.”

PACCAR Australia’s managing director Mike Dozier congratulated Graham Thomson Motors on being one of Kenworth’s top performers and setting a benchmark for other dealers, as well as the industry in general.

Kenworth’s and Graham Thomson Motors’ success linked Kenworth trucks are renowned for being Australian-built for Australian conditions.

Manufactured by PACCAR Australia in a worldclass facility at Bayswater, the prime movers have been sold and serviced by Graham Thomson Motors in Shepparton for more than 30 years.

PACCAR Australia directly employs upwards of 750 people and many thousands more through its independent supplier and dealer networks.

The 40th anniversary of Australian production at the Bayswater plant occurred in 2011, and a year later the company joined a select group of local manufacturers inducted into the Victorian Manufacturing Hall of Fame.

PACCAR works closely with Graham Thomson Motors on a daily basis, supplying new trucks ordered to strict specifications, and back-up service with an extensive catalogue of spare parts.

Graham Thomson Motors sales manager Locky Grant has won awards for selling Kenworth trucks and is full of praise for what he considers a premium product.

“Kenworth is the only truck built in Australia from mostly locally manufactured parts,” Mr Grant said.

“Trims, cabs, fuel tanks, instruments, seats, they are all made here.”

He said Kenworth invested heavily in research and development to improve safety, fuel consumption and emissions.

Amidst the gloom of business closures and loss of jobs in the Australian manufacturing industry,

PACCAR and Kenworth are a good news story.

A PACCAR spokesman said the Australian supply chain included 50 suppliers, the majority of which were Australian-owned companies located in the Melbourne region.

He said the company was a major manufacturer, importer and distributor of commercial vehicles in Australia and was committed to supporting local manufacturing and ongoing improvements in road freight efficiency.

New ownership but same great service Graham Thomson Motors is now part of a larger organisation which encompasses truck dealerships on four sites in two states.

In 2011 the Thomson family business was purchased by brothers Glenn and Rod Leake, proprieters of the Mildura Truck Centre.

It’s been very much business as usual under the new ownership structure, with existing management and staff continuing to deliver excellent customer service to the Shepparton transport industry.

The only visible change has been an alteration to the signage on the front of the dealership and regular monthly visits from Glenn to liaise with Graham Thomson Motors’ staff.

According to Glenn, his family business shares several similarities with the Shepparton-based firm.

“Obviously there is the Kenworth connection and Mildura Truck Centre also started out as a small business which over time grew and developed,” he said.

That business began in 1951 when Glenn and Rod’s father Ken paid a 10 pound deposit on a

service station in Buronga and went into business repairing cars and selling petrol.

Over time Ken took on various franchises selling Freighter trailers, Leyland, MAN, Mercedes Benz and in 1976, Kenworth trucks.

Outgrowing the original premises, and with truck repairs added to the business, Ken relocated to the present site on 2.5 ha in Benetook Ave. The company continued to grow and in 1992 was appointed the Isuzu truck franchise and in 1995 the trading name changed from Buronga Truck Sales and Service to Mildura Truck Centre (MTC).

Glenn and Rod have extensive experience in the transport industry. Glenn joined the company as an apprentice mechanic in 1979 and from 1987 to 2002 held the position of service manager. Rod joined MTC in 1989 as a mechanic followed by a short time in sales, then took on the role of parts manager.

In 2002, Ken retired after 50 years in business and passed the company on to his sons. In that time they have added businesses in Swan Hill, Shepparton and Broken Hill.

The four businesses employ a total of 134 people.

Quality and safety the sales pitch If you take notice of the gleaming Kenworth and DAF prime movers cruising the roads around Shepparton, chances are they were sold by Graham Thomson Motors.

Sales of new and used trucks are an integral part of the business which is handled by sales managers Locky Grant and Gary Nickson, sales co-ordinator Will McKie and sales consultant Warwick Talbot.

Mr Grant said prospective clients could call into the dealership, order a custom-built truck, and leave with a firm price and all specifications in around two hours. “That process used to take two or three days at the minimum. Now it’s all done by computer,� Mr Grant said.

Now paint colours can be viewed by the click of a mouse and ordered instantaneously.

Depending on the workload at PACCAR’s Kenworth manufacturing plant in Bayswater, a new truck will be delivered within 10 to 12 weeks.

Upon arrival at Graham Thomson Motors, new trucks undergo a pre-delivery inspection in the workshop. Compliance and identification numbers are

checked and any after-market extras fitted.

Mr Grant said Kenworth trucks appealed to fleet operators because they were built in Australia and the majority of their components were manufactured here. “I would say 60 to 70 per cent of Kenworth parts are manufactured here. Trims, cabs, fuel tanks, instruments, seats, all made here,� Mr Grant said.

Mr Nickson said Kenworth was considered a market leader in safety technology.

He said Graham Thomson Motors had a client base

encompassing fleet operators and individual owner drivers. “We deal with all industries, grain and general freight, refrigerated transport, fuel tankers, milk tankers and stock carriers. We are starting to deal more and more with road trains and heavy road trains,� Mr Nickson said. “Our customers are a mix of repeat clients and new customers. Many of our existing clients have a five-year rollover period.�

Thrust into the driver’s seat It is impossible to accurately record the history of Graham Thomson Motors without acknowledging the valuable contribution of Joy Thomson.

Mrs Thomson slipped into the driver’s seat in 2002 and took on the role of dealer principal following the sudden death of her husband Graham, after whom the business is named.

But her involvement in the business and interest in trucks began long before that.

“I’ve been around trucks since I was four years old. My father drove trucks; when I met Graham he was driving trucks for Philips’ Transport and then he went on to work for his brother, Bryan,” Mrs Thomson said.

“Graham drove a semi on the eastern seaboard route for a while but that was relatively short-lived. He learned about sales and managed Bryan’s business for a time until he went into business for himself in 1984.”

That was the year Graham Thomson Motors was born and although Mrs Thomson wasn’t involved in the business on a day-to-day basis, behind the scenes she and Graham “always talked shop”.

“I made a point of being involved with the Kenworth fraternity which I thought would stand me in good stead if ever there was a disaster. I’m so glad I did as they did support me when Graham died.”

Mrs Thomson was a familiar face to the staff. She was the organiser of the corporate uniforms and Christmas functions and

during challenging financial times pitched in and cleaned the offices.

The staff was one of the main reasons Mrs Thomson took on the dealer principal role immediately after her husband’s death.

“One of Graham’s strengths was selecting good staff. He had things humming along really well and I felt I had to step in and assure the people here that their jobs were secure and would continue,” Mrs Thomson said.

“I’m sure the staff, the customers and our corporate partners wondered for a while how long it would last, but it only took a couple of years for everyone to realise I was here for the long term.”

Mrs Thomson said the dealership was Mr Thomson’s passion and one of his proudest days was the opening of the purpose-built facility which now occupies a prime site on Shepparton’s major truck route.

“He was thrilled to bits to have his own premises. Business increased 30 per cent in that first year. We couldn’t believe the amount of traffic that went up and down Doyle’s Rd,” Mrs Thomson said.

Winning Kenworth Dealer of the Year awards were highlights but for Mrs Thomson it was the wonderful relationships she had with the staff which she most enjoyed.

In 2011, with mixed feelings, Mrs Thomson sold the business to Mildurabased brothers Glenn and Rod Leake.

“At that time I felt I had given my all and put my imprint on the business. I felt it was time for some new blood,” Mrs Thomson said.

Spare parts division is a a one-stop shop

Sourcing and supplying parts to get trucks back on the road is the daily challenge faced by Graham Thomson Motors’ spare parts division.

Manager Gerry Van Grinsven said the division held about 7000 product lines which equated to about $1.7 million worth of stock.

From engine parts to brake and drive line parts, filters, oils and lubricants, truck wash, truck seats and even Engel fridges and accessories, you will likely find what you need. And if you can’t, parts can be identified, ordered and delivered overnight, in most instances, thanks to the streamlined computer systems. “We try to be a one-stop shop for parts,� Mr Van Grinsven said.

The division has grown exponentially since moving to the current premises in 1997, and with the continued evolution of the transport industry Mr Van Grinsven sees no sign of that growth abating.

He oversees a team of 16, making the spare parts division second in size only to the service department.

Four staff work on the front counter, dealing with customers who call into the dealership. Two more work on the back counter, sourcing parts for the trucks and trailers going through the workshop in the service area.

Administration staff and five storemen ensure the efficient operation of the area.

Mr Van Grinsven said they dealt predominantly with PACCAR for Kenworth and DAF parts but had a network of suppliers who catered for all truck makes and models. “The trailer component of the industry is really growing, it’s becoming a larger

part of what we do,� Mr Van Grinsven said.

He said there were times they had to draw on the collective knowledge of the team to determine the origin of some of the old and worn parts brought to the front counter. “We are fortunate we have a lot of experienced staff here who have been here for a lot of years. Some people bring in some interesting stuff but generally we can work out what part it is,�

Keeping trucks moving The service division at Graham Thomson Motors enjoys the reputation of being one of the most efficient within the greater Kenworth network.

Service manager Cameron Crouch oversees the state-of-the-art workshop which is staffed by 14 qualified mechanics, 10 apprentices of all levels and four administration staff.

There are 13 service bays, three well-lit service pits, one set of mobile hoists, diagnostic tooling and associated storage. The bays are capable of housing a full B-double which means operators don’t have to unhitch the trailers when going through the workshop.

As well as servicing the Shepparton transport industry Mr Crouch said the business was ideally situated on the main Melbourne to Brisbane truck route which further broadened its customer base.

“We get calls from interstate trucking firms who may have trucks travelling in the area. Through the Kenworth network these trucks come through our workshop for repairs,” Mr Crouch said.

Changes to truck engine emission laws and sound regulations require staff to undergo regular training.

“We need to ensure our staff are trained and capable of using the equipment required, so the trucks coming through our workshop adhere to those sound and emission laws,” Mr Crouch said.

The well-designed layout of the workshop allows for the smooth flow of trucks and trailers through the premises while ensuring staff safety is maintained at all times.

Although Graham Thomson Motors is a Kenworth and DAF dealership, the service division caters for all makes of trucks.

“Trailer work is a growing part of the business. We are also agents for Cummins and Caterpillar engines so that is a significant part of our work too,” Mr Crouch said.

The workshop is open from 8 am to 6 pm on weekdays and from 8 am to 1 pm on Saturdays.

If a truck fails outside those hours the 24-hour breakdown service swings into action.

Staffed by two qualified mechanics the on-call service travels within a 200 km radius of Shepparton helping truck drivers get back on the road.

Management profiles Gerard Michel General manager Gerard Michel joined the Graham Thomson Motors team in January 1990 as a newly-graduated accountant.

Born in Nathalia, Mr Michel completed his tertiary education at La Trobe University in Shepparton and Bendigo before taking on the accountant’s position within the administration team.

After four years Mr Michel moved into the role of financial controller; following Graham Thomson’s untimely death in 2002, he moved into the position he currently occupies — general manager.

Mr Michel said the role was varied and could involve a myriad of tasks on any given day.

“As general manager I oversee the continuing profitability of the company as well as help create the environment for growth and ensure occupational health and safety standards are met,” Mr Michel said.

“Every day is different, there are times when my work is financial-based or customer-service focused.”

Mr Michel attributes the firm’s continued success to the loyalty and knowledge of the staff and the strong relationships it has built with clients.

Gerry Van Grinsven is the longest-serving staff member at Graham Thomson Motors, having chalked up more than 40 years’ service.

He grew up on a Latrobe Valley dairy farm but a career in agriculture didn’t eventuate; in fact, Mr Van Grinsven’s entire working life has been in the spare parts sector.

Mr Van Grinsven originally worked for Graham Thomson’s brother, Bryan, for a decade. When Graham Thomson bought, and re-badged, the business Mr Van Grinsven was appointed manager of the spare parts division, a position he has held ever since.

He has overseen enormous growth in his department to the point where the spare parts area now employs 16 staff and holds $1.7 million worth of stock.

With the continuing expansion of the transport industry in the region, Mr Van Grinsven doesn’t see that growth abating anytime soon.

“We have many experienced staff who have been here for a lot of years. Our new systems are very streamlined and we are able to get most parts delivered overnight,” Mr Van Grinsven said.

“It’s important to get trucks moving again as soon as possible.”

After completing his apprenticeship in Melbourne, Cameron Crouch returned to his home town, Shepparton.

He has been with Graham Thomson Motors for 18 years in total but that time has been punctuated by stints working for other Shepparton-based truck fleets, and for former Graham Thomson Motors service manager Alan Roe at his car repair business.

Mr Crouch has always had an interest in engines, and even now is happy to pull on the overalls and help out in the workshop when things get busy.

He oversees a staff of 27 including mechanics, apprentices and service support staff.

The service department works closely with the spare parts department, sourcing parts for repairs and servicing.

All new trucks go through the workshop too, ensuring any after-market extras are fitted before the new owners take delivery.

Mr Crouch said continuing improvements in transport technology gave staff new opportunities to refine their skills and work on the most up-to-date models.

Management profiles Gary Nickson Sales manager From his formative years as an interstate truck driver to his present role in sales, trucks have been a part of Gary Nickson’s life for decades.

He is presently sharing the sales manager role at Graham Thomson Motors with Locky Grant but has been in sales there for 10 years.

Mr Nickson’s previous job was as operations manager for a Bendigo-based transport company and it was the excellent reputation of the Shepparton business which prompted his move here.

“Graham Thomson Motors is a family-owned business and has strong family values in business. That was a strong attraction for me and my family,” Mr Nickson said.

“I love the transport industry, I always have. The secret is to love what you do; it’s a good place to be and keeps you on top of your game.”

Mr Nickson said he enjoyed the close working relationship of the sales, service and spare parts divisions.

“We all work closely together, the success of our own divisions are all relative to each other’s success.”

Anthony Conte has been employed by Graham Thomson Motors for his entire working life, having taken on the accountant’s role 10 years ago.

Fresh from La Trobe University in Shepparton, Mr Conte completed his Certified Practising Accountant (CPA) qualifications during the first four years of his time with the business.

Eager to progress his career, Mr Conte took on the financial controller’s job six years ago.

His major responsibilities include producing monthly financials for the dealership, compiling reports for management and liaising with tax accountants and auditors.

Mr Conte also oversees the administration team members whose areas of expertise include reception, payroll, accounts payable and receivable.

He works closely with the managers of the sales, service and spare parts teams and essentially combines the financial elements from each to create the overall accounting documents.

“We have 54 staff here who are relying on me to take care of the liquidity of the business,” Mr Conte said.

With 36 years’ service to his name, Locky Grant is the second-longest-serving employee at Graham Thomson Motors.

A mechanic by trade, Mr Grant started working for Graham Thomson’s brother, Bryan, and has held the positions of workshop foreman, service manager, sales consultant and, for the past 18 years, sales manager.

Sales awards adorn his office wall including one for PACCAR’s Kenworth Australasian Salesman of the Year in 1988.

Mr Grant said the dealership had been very successful as evidenced by the outstanding facilities it occupied and its continued growth.

He attributes that success to the ongoing service and support provided to customers.

“We offer very strong after-sales support. We don’t just push people out the gate with the attitude that we’ve got the money so (bye-bye),” Mr Grant said.

And even after so many years in the business Mr Grant still gets a “buzz” out of selling a new truck.

Four decades in spare parts Gerry Van Grinsven has clocked up longservice leave several times over in his 40 years with Graham Thomson Motors.

It is rare an employee stays in the same job for that length of time but Mr Van Grinsven says the evolution of the industry has allowed him no time to stagnate.

He started out working for Graham Thomson’s brother, Bryan, and was promoted to spare parts manager when Graham took over the business 30 years ago.

Mr Van Grinsven enjoys the camaraderie of working in a large team and has enjoyed, in his words, “meeting some great people”.

“I’ve also had the opportunity to travel. I’ve been to the Kenworth factory in America and the DAF factories in the Netherlands and the UK,” Mr Van Grinsven said.

As spare parts manager he works with a team of 16 staff and oversees about 7000 product lines in the well-stocked division.

Mr Van Grinsven has had to embrace new technology, particularly with the administration side of the business.

“Everything is done electronically now and is more streamlined, we can order parts and have them here overnight,” Mr Van Grinsven said.

Forty years in the one job is a rarity but Gerry Van Grinsven has no plans to retire any time soon.

Community involvement important to firm Graham Thomson Motors has a long history of assisting sporting clubs, schools and other organisations within the Shepparton area.

General managerr Gerard Michel said the firm had sponsored and supported football, cricket, basketball and motorsport.

“Generally our involvement comes about from our staff members’ or clients’ connections to an organisation,” Mr Michel said.

“We have also sponsored customers who have been involved in the various Variety club bashes, together with supporting country school fetes and school fundraising efforts.”

The GV Community Fund, the Big Blokes BBQ Prostate Cancer fundraising event, the Salvation Army and the local Rotary Clubs’ Mooroopna New Year’s Eve Festival and the Shepparton Rotary Club charity golf day have also benefited.

Verney Road School has taken small groups of students to the facility on an annual basis for at least the past five years.

Assistant principal Prue Dobson said the students were awed by the sheer size of the trucks and delighted in being able to climb up into the cabins.

“They see trucks driving past on the road but when they stand up close to them there are lots of exclamations of ‘wow’,” Ms Dobson said.

The excursions coincide with specific areas of study at the school such as transport and food production.

Ms Dobson said the Graham Thomson Motors staff were always accommodating during the visits,

Still gets a ‘buzz’ from selling trucks After a lifetime in the transport industry, Graham Thomson Motors sales administration manager Locky Grant still gets a “buzz” from selling a new truck.

Having clocked up 36 years of employment with the Thomson family, Mr Grant is the second-longest-serving staff member within the organisation.

He hasn’t always been in sales — as a qualified mechanic he has held several roles including workshop foreman and service manager.

Prior to that, he was an interstate truck driver.

“I’ve sold trucks, I’ve fixed trucks and I’ve driven trucks,” Mr Grant said.

“I’ve hung around engines all my life which is why I’ve always enjoyed my job.”

Mr Grant took on the sales manager role 18 years ago working alongside his school-mate Graham Thomson. In 1988 he was named PACCAR’s Kenworth Australasian salesman of the year, an award which hangs proudly on his office wall.

He has seen new trucks evolve to comply with emission laws and change shape so they are aerodynamic to reduce wind resistance.

“Fuel economy is very important now. Fuel

wasn’t such a big issue years ago but now it’s critical,” Mr Grant said.

Due to his extended time with the Sheppartonbased business Mr Grant has enjoyed the relationships he has built up with clients, many of whom replace their trucks every five years.

“I’ve hung around engines all my life which is why I’ve always enjoyed my job.”

“I’m always striving to create new customers and it’s pleasing now that I’m starting to deal with the sons and daughters of clients who are coming into their family businesses.”

Mr Grant, who is planning to retire next year, spends most of his time in the office now; working with clients to custom design their new rigs.

“But it wasn’t that long ago I used to clock up 80 000 km a year driving all over the place to see my clients,” Mr Grant said.

Anthony Conte has racked up 10 years’ employment with Graham Thomson Motors. He is the firm’s financial controller.

An organisation the size of Graham Thomson Motors requires a cohesive finance and administration team to ensure it continues to run smoothly.

With a staff of 54 and essentially operating as three businesses — sales, service and spare parts — it’s the role of the team to integrate the financial incomings and outgoings and maintain cash flow.

Receptionist Cheryl Warne is usually the first point of contact for visitors new to the firm. With more than 30 years’ experience in administration Ms Warne is the newest member of the team, having taken up her

role five months ago.

Primarily she answers the phone and assists the sales staff with typing and administration support.

With a bright and friendly personality Ms Warne said her new job allowed her to indulge her interest of “meeting and talking to people”.

Working closely together in accounts payable and receivable are Sharon Allen and Andrea Percival who have racked up an impressive 40 years’ service between them.

Ms Allen is responsible for accounts payable and is the firm’s payroll officer.

“I deal with some fairly large numbers when it comes to paying the outgoings,” Ms Allen said.

On the other side of the balance sheet, Ms Percival deals with accounts receivable and has built up a wonderful rapport with customers.

“All of the invoices from sales, spare parts and service come through here,” Ms Percival said.

It’s a busy role but the introduction of emailed accounts three years ago has streamlined the process.

“There are a few end-of-month statements I have to print out, fold and post but the majority go via email now. We have customers in Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and all over Victoria,” Ms Percival said.

Financial controller Anthony Conte has seen

some significant changes in his 10 years at Graham Thomson Motors.

“Technology has moved forward. When I started we had dial-up internet, that has progressed to ADSL and now wireless. The equipment has evolved too, from PCs to laptops and iPads,” Mr Conte said.

Accounting software is continually being upgraded.

Mr Conte said his role was challenging and varied and was now heading into perhaps his busiest time — finalising end-of-year reports for tax purposes.

“A large element of my role is reactive, dealing with what has already happened. But it’s important to spend time forward planning too,” Mr Conte said.

Opportunities for apprentices Graham Thomson Motors has a proud history of providing opportunities for young mechanics pursuing careers in heavy road transport.

In 2014 the service division has 10 apprentices in their first, second or third year of training.

They work alongside the qualified mechanics gaining practical skills which are further honed by their regular attendance at Goulburn Ovens Institute of TAFE in Shepparton.

Service division manager Cameron Crouch said

the apprentices had access to modern diagnostic equipment and were given the opportunity to work on the latest Kenworth trucks and Cummins engines.

“They are an enthusiastic bunch. We organise a few social events to maintain morale and cohesion in the workshop,” Mr Crouch said.

Upon completion of their training some apprentices stay on at Graham Thomson Motors while others take their newly-gained qualifications and pursue careers with fleet operators or in the mining industry.

“Our apprentices do have opportunities beyond Graham Thomson Motors,” Mr Crouch said.

Wheels of change constantly turn Change is a constant in all industries and none more so than in transport.

Research and development, legislative shifts and advanced technologies are just some of the areas Graham Thomson Motors’ staff has adapted to.

Sales manager Gary Nickson said the biggest advancement had been with the trucks themselves.

“There have been great improvements with safety features. Some trucks actually have a sensor system on the front which measures distance between the truck and the vehicle travelling in front,” Mr Nickson said.

“If for some reason that vehicle slows down the truck driver is warned and the truck de-powers and stops.”

Electronic Stability Control has developed to help prevent truck roll-overs, and driver comfort has been improved.

An emphasis on the environment has led to engine advancements to comply with Euro IV and Euro V emissions standards.

Mr Nickson said Kenworth was a leader in safety technology.

Looking ahead he expected improved road networks would accommodate high-productivity vehicles with even greater gross vehicle mass.

In spare parts, manager Gerry Van Grinsven said computers had streamlined the ordering and delivery process.

“We no longer have to thumb through old microfiche or parts books. Most parts and catalogues are on our system, and if not we can access the information via internet,” Mr Van Grinsven said.

Advancements in the diagnostic equipment required to service the current models have led to the dealership investing in specialised engine tooling and hoists.

General manager Gerard Michel said industry bodies such as NatRoad and the Australian Trucking Association had become more prominent over time and were adept at presenting the industry’s viewpoint to politicians and authorities.
