Experience leads the way

After returning to Shepparton from backpacking around the globe, Jill McCurry noticed a new store had opened its doors on Wyndham St.

That was 20 years ago. Starting as a full-time travel consultant, Jill has now risen to the rank of store manager at Flight Centre Wyndham St. Over this time the business and its unmistakable red logo has been a quintessential part of the Wyndham St streetscape, with consultants like Jill building its reputation as Shepparton’s destination for travel. “I started as a full time consultant and worked for over eight years before having children and returning as a job-share consultant then moving into a managerial role which I have enjoyed doing for the last nine years,” Jill said. “Back then we had to issue our own tickets; we had to do everything manually. Now we the latest technology, we just have to enter in the destination someone is after and it will give us direct access to all airlines and websites. “We are very lucky in Shepparton to have a Flight Centre as we can all benefit from such huge buying power that Flight Centre provides.

“Our customers can rest assured they are not only getting the latest but also some of the best exclusive deals around that can only be booked through one of the biggest travel retailers in the world.” Over her 20 years in the business Jill has seen much change in the industry, from the Ansett collapse and the 911 terrorist attacks, to the increasing accessibility and affordability of travel. “People don’t stop travelling we just travel differently now,” she said. “We have to pick places that are deemed to be more safe.” Jill has seen a change in her clientele, with older people choosing to spend more of their retirement travelling, both domestically and abroad, plus the rise of the gap year and solo travel. She said the internet era had also changed the way people planned their travels – for the better. “We now see our customers do more research on their own but still prefer to book with the experts,” she said. “It’s great for us because we find our

customers are way more educated, they know what’s out there.” For Jill, it has been a challenging yet rewarding career. “When you’re at work you’re working hard but the rewards are unbelievable,” she said. “Flight Centre has provided the opportunity for me to travel globally with at least two to three trips per year to build on my knowledge so we can provide the best customer experience for our clientele. “There is no better experience than first-hand knowledge.” From cultural immersion in Asia, historic sight-seeing in Africa and letting down her hair in North America, the jetsetter has visited all corners of the globe. “I have just returned this week from a trip to the Maldives staying in an overwater bungalow and an Insight tour to Italy which is my favourite way to travel on a pre-paid coach tour with an expert guide giving you a real authentic feel of the country,” she said.

“I have been lucky enough to travel to many destinations I wouldn’t normally have chosen but these have been the most rewarding such as Egypt, Turkey and Nepal.” Jill has travelled to more than 35 countries and is building on that every year; and it is this extensive travel that has contributed to her success. “The most rewarding part of the job is building relationships with our customers so we can then book the holiday of their dreams or maybe it’s a business trip. Whatever the case we love when our customers come back to us or refer us to their friends and family as we know we have done a great job and taken care of them to the best of our ability,” she said. “We are a one-stop-shop here and do our customers visas, travel cards and even interest free finance.”

Get in quick for travel deals The world is on sale at Flight Centre Shepparton. Tomorrow is the Christmas Day of travel, with the Wyndham St team excited to unwrap the secret discounts offered during the World Travel Expo on Saturday, May 25 and Sunday, May 26. They will not know exactly what is on sale until tomorrow morning, but travel consultant Hollie Wood said each year the specials were mind-blowing. “There will be genuine savings on insurance, airfares, discounts on tours, cruises and international accommodation,” Hollie said. If you are planning to travel anywhere around the

globe in 2019 to mid-2020, it is an event not to be missed. With only two days to take advantage of the deals, Hollie said it was best to be prepared and appointments were essential. “Come into Flight Centre Wyndham St or ring to make an appointment,” Hollie said. “If we have a rough idea about where they’re heading and what they want to do, when they come in at the expo we have already done a bit of research, we know what they want and we can really make the most of those discounts on offer. “We will book the best

package possible.” Now is the time to narrow down your bucket list. “Even if you don’t know exactly where you want to go we’ll help you pin it down,” Hollie said. “There’s nearly 100 years of travel experience in Wyndham St, so one of us is going to know exactly what you need.” Everyone who books during the World Travel Expo will have access to Flight Centre’s no deposit, interest-free holidays and will go into the running to win the lucky door prize – a $200 Intrepid voucher.

Nine reasons to book with Flight Centre Wyndham St

Travel consultant Hollie Wood has made a long-awaited return to the travel industry. After joining Flight Centre Wyndham St in 2007, the mum took time off to raise a family, but now she’s back. For Hollie a passion for travel has taken her down an unexpected path. “I did a business and marketing degree and then I travelled around the world and came back and said I think I would like to be a travel agent instead,” Hollie said. “I just got the bug and you can’t get rid of it.” Hollie has studied in Italy, lived in England for a couple of years, done Contiki tours all over Europe, travelled to Bali, Thailand and the Philippines for work and visited Fiji, New Zealand and Hamilton Island on family holidays. But Africa will always have her heart. “I spent two months in Africa just before I had my babies,” she said. “We mainly did Kenya and Tanzania and a little bit of Zimbabwe and Zambia. “I had no expectations of Africa, I went with a really clean slate expecting to drive around in a truck for a few days and see some animals but it was mind-blowing – the people, the culture – these people have nothing and they’re so happy. “We went to camps and at night we were guarded by Masai warriors with spears, we had our own personal Masai warrior at the front of our tent guarding us.” Whenever someone comes into the office with dreams of an African adventure, she cannot hide her excitement. For Hollie it does not matter what the budget is, she gets a kick out of booking someone’s dream trip. “For some people a trip to Queensland for seven days might be their lifetime dream but some people might come in here with $50 000 and Canada and Alaska is their dream,” she said. “Everyone who comes in here for the most part is happy and they’re excited and it might be corny but we get to make their dreams come true and not many people get to do that.” Much has changed during Hollie’s time away from the industry but she is getting a hang of the new technology and the competition of the internet age. “The biggest thing I’ve noticed since coming back is our competition against the internet, hence why Flight Centre brought in

Travel consultant Hollie Wood. their price drop guarantee,” Hollie said. “It allows people to book with confidence because if they see it on the internet a couple of months later before they travel, they can come back in and if valid, Flight Centre will give them back the difference in gift cards. “Someone might be quite capable of booking a flight to the UK but they might come and see if Flight Centre can match it at least to get the benefits.” With a combination of big business power and old-fashioned customer service, Hollie said Flight Centre Wyndham St offered the best of both worlds. “Customers are here for a reason, they don’t want to go on the internet, they want to come in and talk to someone face-toface,” she said. “From the minute you think about your booking to the time you get home, you’re taken care of and that’s the support a multi-national will give you with the service of a small town.” Hollie’s top travel tip is to check your passport before you travel; you need six months’ validity to enter most countries.

Assistant store manager

It was a trip to New Zealand to visit her aunt that inspired Lauren McLean to make a career change. “I was just going over to see her and she said go down to Rotorua and stay in a hostel for a couple of nights,” Lauren said. “I met people from Ireland, England and they just had all these amazing stories. “I came home and I knew I needed to do something that gives people that feeling that I got when I went away.” When a position at Flight Centre opened up, she took the leap and in two years has worked her way up from a novice travel consultant to assistant store manager. Now she’s explored the beaches of Bali and Fiji, ventured to Dubai and was rewarded for her hard work with a trip to Berlin. But the standout was visiting Egypt with her mum. “My mum has been thinking about going to Egypt for 30 years and it was really great to put that into

action for her,” she said. “Being there when she had her special moments, like when we got to the pyramids and she got to touch them, she started crying. When we went to Abu Simbel, she got overwhelmed too.” For Lauren her favourite part of the job is helping people create their dream trip. “When someone says ‘this is my dream trip’ I’ve just come back from one of those trips with my mum so I know that you need to tick all your bucket list items. “It’s important we make sure it is the trip of a lifetime.” Specialising in group tours, Lauren is jetting-off to Europe in October to test out Contiki’s European Contrasts tour. “I’m very passionate about Contiki and Top Deck, especially for people who are going on their first overseas trip because I remember what that was like,” she said.

Travel consultant

Born in New Zealand, Sinead Simkin is new to the travel industry, joining Flight Centre six months ago. She is passionate about all things New Zealand. From Taupo to Milford Sound, if you are headed to Sinead’s homeland she has plenty of advice. “Go up and see Lake Taupo and the amazing scenery, and Milford Sound in the South Island – it’s one of those places that is unreal, you’re surrounded by waterfalls,” she said. Having spent the past decade living in Australia, Sinead recommends people get out there and explore their own country.

She suggests road-tripping up the NSW coast to Merimbula, Ulladulla and Byron Bay, while her top must-do is the centralnorth coast of Tasmania. “There’s just so much to discover,” she said. “Tasmania has heaps of beautiful beaches, they’re so picturesque they look like they’re out of a Maldives magazine; they have crystal clear waters and you have to see them to believe them. “I would 100 per cent recommend seeing more of Australia – it just has so much to offer.” Sinead is looking forward to travelling to Fiji and Bali at the end of the year, the beginning of her adventures abroad.

Vanessa Portia Travel consultant

Countries visited: 2 Favourite place: Bali, Indonesia Expert in: Bali, Indonesia Following her passion for travel, Vanessa Portia joined the Flight Centre team five months ago. “I love experiencing other cultures that we are not really exposed to here and learning about how other cultures live, experience that and being amongst it,” Vanessa said. “Travel is important because I think it helps us to be well cultured and sometimes it also makes us realise how lucky we are to live in the country that we do.” Vanessa has travelled around Australia, visiting tropical north Queensland and venturing abroad to Fiji and Bali.

An expert on the Indonesian island, she said it was easy to see why Australians love Bali. “It’s a short flight to be in a different country, it’s very cost effective and you can really live like a king or queen without spending too much,” she said. Vanessa’s next stop will be Europe. “There’s a little town called Calabria in the south of Italy, that’s where my family is from so that’s the main place I want to visit,” she said. No matter where you are travelling, Vanessa’s biggest tip is to learn the local currency – if you have a good idea of what it equates to in Australian dollars you should not get any nasty surprises.

2020 is your year of discovery! And what better way to see the world than on a luxurious Avalon river cruise along Europe’s famed rivers.

Travel consultant

For Jade Golightly, planning the nitty gritty details of someone’s dream trip is all part of the fun. A self-confessed lover of structure with 14 years’ industry experience, the travel consultant relishes in helping people get organised, especially when they are overwhelmed with the barrage of information available online. Unsurprisingly, Jade is a huge fan of tours and says they offer great insight into a destination including tips on the ground like the best places to eat and nightlife hot spots. “Especially if it’s your first time travelling, if you haven’t been to that country before definitely do a tour,

you’ll get a lot more out of it,” Jade said. “There are plenty of different companies to choose from – everything comes down to age, budget and how you want to travel.” From the country twang of southern cities like Nashville, New Orleans and Memphis to the bustle of New York City, Jade loves the United States, but her favourite destination is Canada and its picturesque Rocky Mountains – which really are just like you see on the postcards. While Jade is currently on maternity leave, she will be back early in the new year to perfect the details of your next adventure.

Laura Kennett Travel consultant

Countries visited: 30 Favourite place: Morocco Expert in: South America At 19, Laura Kennett took off on her first overseas trip, immediately catching the travel bug and hasn’t stopped since. Starting a career with Flight Centre more than a decade ago has only helped fulfil her wanderlust. “It’s something I love and I love to share that experience with my clients,” Laura said. From Europe and the Americas to South-East Asia and Africa, the jetsetter has travelled all over the globe both personally and professionally. “One of the most interesting places I’ve been to is Morocco – it’s a really strange place geographically and culturally,” Laura said. “It’s technically in Africa, but it has Arabic culture and people are speaking French – it’s such a melting

pot and it changes so much just driving an hour or so up the road.” While Laura is currently on maternity leave, she will be back at work within the next 12 months and is already looking at what to check off her bucket list next. “There’s a lot of places. I’d like to go back to India; that’s one place I feel that I’ve been there but just too quickly and I want to go back,” she said. “You can’t just sit here, look at the brochures and plan everyone else’s holidays – you get itchy feet very quickly.” No matter the destination, Laura’s top tips are: do not over-pack and do not stress about a thing – if you have your wallet, passport, a big smile and a good attitude you’ll get by.

Lucky to explore much of her homeland of New Zealand with her family, Adelaide Cox’s passion for travel was instilled at a young age. It was this thirst for adventure that led the Wellington native to a summer camp in Maine in the United States, where she fell in love with a fellow ski instructor from Shepparton. Fast forward to 2019 and Adelaide has been working at Flight Centre in Wyndham St for more than two-and-ahalf years. “I love travelling and this job allows me to share my experiences but also lets me travel,” Adelaide said. Whether it be a group tour, travel with family, friends or her partner, or a solo adventure, Adelaide has plenty of stamps in her passport.

She has experienced the Canadian winter, the beaches of Fiji, Bali and Hawaii, both sides of the US and more recently Greece, the United Kingdom and the cultural melting pot of Turkey. Adelaide’s travels means she offers a wealth of on-the-ground knowledge and advice. “I think Turkey is definitely an upand-coming travel destination so it was good to get in there early, see what it’s all about and experience it first-hand,” she said. “It helps with my work so much because it makes it so easy to explain to my customers what the experience would be like.” But for now exploring Australia is the top of Adelaide’s bucket list.

Nicole Adem

Travel consultant Countries visited: 12 Favourite place: Vietnam Expert in: The US and Canada Turning a hobby into a career means Nicole Adem loves going to work every day and making people’s dream holidays a reality. The traveller has embraced South American culture in Argentina and eaten her way through Asia, naming Vietnam as her favourite destination. “I’ve been from the north right through to the south – Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City,” Nicole said. “It’s the history, it just makes you appreciate their culture, their way of living – the people are just kind and caring.” During her seven years with Flight Centre, Nicole has been lucky to visit six countries on ‘famils’ – trips given to consultants to familiarise themselves with an airline, tour

company or destination. From swagging it under the stars at Uluru with Intrepid to exploring China with On The Go Tours, she said getting a taste for different travel experiences – whether it is five-star or camping – helps her recommend the perfect trip. “I’m not a camper, so for me to go camping and absolutely love it means it was pretty special,” Nicole said. “I totally stepped out of my comfort zone and when you’re travelling it’s great to step out of your comfort zone because you’ll be surprised. “Definitely research but come in and be open-minded how you think you might like to travel.”

CELEBRATING 20 YEARS

Jade Golightly

Abu Simbel in Egypt.

Ros and Neil Stannard in Arles in France.

Seasoned travellers keep coming back For almost as long as Flight Centre Wydham St has been in business, Ros and Neil Stannard have been organising their holidays with store manager Jill McCurry. It was a holiday to Fiji to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary that started their long-standing relationship with Jill. “It was just pot luck that we went into Flight Centre and got Jill and we connected with her,” Ros said. “She was terrific and we kept on going back to her because our first trip was so good. “Nothing is too much trouble for her; she’s always there with advice and guidance.” Since then, the Stannards have taken 12 international trips including a family holiday to Disneyland in the United States, a small ship adventure around Canada and Alaska and a European river cruise, just to name a few. There have been plenty of highlights, including hot air ballooning in Turkey, but it was a private tour of Egypt in

2010 that hooked the Stannards on travel and gave them the confidence to try something different. “Jill had only just came back from Egypt and said it was fantastic and you’ve got to do this, and six weeks later we were gone,” Neil said. “There was so much culture, going to the pyramids, going to Abu Simbel and seeing the Sphinx. “The tour guide we had she was super, we were one-on-one with her and her driver.” Ros and Neil enjoy the organised nature of tours but also because they get to experience things they would not otherwise know about, like skipping the line at the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City. “Going to China and seeing the terracotta warriors, you just don’t

understand until you’ve seen it, and the Great Wall was really interesting because ATP took us to a part that didn’t have a lot of tourists, it hadn’t been fixed up or anything, it was just as it was,” Neil said. With Jill’s help the Stannards have determined their travel style and leaned on her expertise to choose their destinations. “We would zip in and say ‘we have two weeks at this time, where’s a good place to go?’,” Ros said. “We would go in and never have something in mind; it’s probably only now that we’re retired that we do a bit more planning. “In the early days Jill said ‘do you want to see a little bit of everything or do you want to concentrate’ and we said ‘we’ll concentrate’.

“We’ve realised we like to go out and see as much as we can.” Ros and Neil’s children Emily and Robert have even been able to surprise them with special gifts on their travels, including a night tour of Singapore Zoo and a trip to Haleakalã, a Hawaiian volcano, for sunrise. The couple was able to return the favour for Emily and son-in-law Jared’s honeymoon. There is no doubt they have passed on the travel bug, with Robert currently living in the Canadian ski fields on a two-year working holiday. But with still so much to see of the world, Ros and Neil’s next adventure is already booked, with a trip to Antarctica and Brazil in their sights.

#INSIGHTMOMENTS

For Tricia and John Preston, their biennial European adventures would not be possible without the expertise of Flight Centre store manager Jill McCurry.

When the couple took off in 2013, it was Tricia’s first overseas trip and John was determined to show her the sights. Landing in Zurich in Switzerland, they cruised from the Swiss city of Basel to Amsterdam in the Netherlands before flying to London to join a train trip stopping in Paris, Nice and Venice. With a taste of Europe, there was never any doubt that Tricia and John would book their next trip with Jill – or their third, or their fourth. “Our first trip Jill just booked everything – we weren’t complicated,” Tricia said. “Every time we’ve gone overseas we’ve become a bit more confident and it becomes more complicated because we know we can do some things by ourselves and we want to venture out more so she helps a lot with that. “I find Jill very good at putting our bits and pieces together – connecting the dots.”

Tricia said Jill’s knowledge and diligence ensured a smooth, stressfree holiday and also gave them access to deals and discounts they otherwise would not know about. Now the Prestons are ready to set off on their fourth trip to Europe. From the lower part of Italy to an Arctic Circle tour departing from Olso in Norway, Tricia said they were getting even further out of their comfort zone. “This time we’re doing all different places,” she said. “We’re hiring a car for 12 days around Ireland and we’re only doing that because they drive on the lefthand-side, exactly like Australia. “This is real bucket list one.” This certainly will not be the last trip they book with Jill; John is already thinking about sneaking in an adventure abroad next year rather than waiting for 2021.

Joy Norman and Lorraine Hartney on a Vanuatu cruise.

Sisters treasure their travels Joy Norman and Lorraine Hartney travel because they can. “We went on this mission after some family sadness and decided to get moving and we were aware if we wanted to go travelling we needed to go now,” Lorraine said. It started with The Ghan train journey in 2011. They have also travelled to the United Kingdom; cruised down Europe’s Rhine River, around Australia to New Zealand and Vanuatu; and they recently returned from Singapore. While Lorraine lives more than three hours away from Shepparton-based sister Joy, Flight Centre store manager Jill McCurry will always be their consultant of choice. “Lorraine will travel up here and we go in there because we’ve always just been so happy,” Joy said. “Because we’ve done so much together she knows and understands what we like and she goes over and above to make us happy. “One day we went in and organised this cruise to New Zealand and came home and chatted about it and we went in that same afternoon and booked another cruise to Vanuatu – we booked New Zealand in the morning and Vanuatu in

the afternoon.” The sisters are always happy to put their trust in Jill. They have even on occasion completely changed their plans based on her advice, opting out of a trip to Fiji in favour of Singapore. “When you’ve been in that field for 20 years you know what different people like,” Joy said. “We wouldn’t book online and we’re really conscious that we’re two women travelling together so we want to have it all organised with transfers, tours – she’s great at organising the finer details,” Lorraine said. Through Jill’s suggestions they have discovered a passion for cruising and the convenience of only having to unpack once. “Lorraine didn’t think she would like the lifestyle – she thought, you’ll be stuck on a boat and you’ll be limited; but we just find it relaxing, you can do as much as you want,” Joy said. The sisters agreed there was plenty still to see, particularly closer to home without the need for a long flight – with Japan high on their to-do list.
