Coleambally set to receive big CopRice upgrade CopRice, SunRice’s animal nutrition business, has confirmed plans to establish one of Australia’s largest ruminant nutrition milling facilities at Coleambally.

Over the next nine months, CopRice will convert the SunRice mill in Coleambally — which is currently under care and maintenance — into a ruminant nutrition mill capable of producing mash and blended stockfeed to meet growing domestic and international demand in the dairy, sheep and beef markets.

In addition to over 80,000 tonnes of storage, exceptional grain handling capacity, and excellent warehousing and containerisation capability, the Coleambally site also uniquely offers proximity and access to readily available cereal grains and by-products from the Riverina region, such as wheat, barley, corn, almond hulls and cotton seed.

The Coleambally site conversion will, once operational, initially employ 10 full time workers on an ongoing basis.

Within 12 months of opening, it is anticipated that the Coleambally mill will be the largest volume contributor for the CopRice business.

In order to meet increasing customer demand for improved on-farm performance of stockfeed products, an integral part of this project will be the utilisation of CopRice’s expertise and the existing Leeton mill to manufacture advanced nutrition concentrate pellets, which will be added to the mash and blend products from Coleambally.

Kellys expand their service Kelly Grains is continuing to expand its diverse grain trading and storage facilities by installing a Continuous Double Flow Grain Dryer Complex.

Located at its Tocumwal site, the grain dryer was installed in 2018 after the region experienced an increase in maize production the previous year.

British manufacturer Alvan Blanch commissioned the dryer and the link to the existing silos and additional drying bins was established by Kotzurs.

During its first year in use, the Kelly Grains machine was able to dry about 5000 tonnes of maize.

Kelly Grains owner Matt Kelly said this expansion allows the business to offer an important service for maize growers across the region.

He said it could eventually result in more farmers growing maize in the district. ‘‘The grain dryer has the ability to dry corn quickly and get it into the crop.

Depending on the moisture it has the ability to dry between 30 and 50 tonne per hour,’’ he said.

‘‘This is the third grain dryer we’ve installed over the past 30 years as we continue to respond to local grower needs. ‘‘We believe this will not only service growers in the Southern Riverina, but also northern Victoria — all of course depending on water availability. ‘‘We have seen an increase in maize consumption as a result of the drier conditions along the east coast of Australia. In the past it was mainly used for cattle feeding, but with limited barley supplies we have seen a switch to supplying the sheep industry. Some are saying they now prefer maize over barley.’’ Going forward, Kelly Grains has received interest from domestic and overseas human snack-food industries.

The dryer can also accommodate wheat, barley and canola, which Mr Kelly said should assist with high moisture loads during the winter crop harvest.

Farmers are changing Rely on scores, winter cropping habits scanning for

By John Lacy About 55 Finley Discussion Group farmers met recently to discuss their cropping practices for the coming season.

The cropping practices for each group were sent to the farmers unable to attend their meeting.

The farmers intend to sow crops dry or on moisture on the usual sowing dates.

Although most farmers are maintaining their rotations, there are a number of changes.

Sheep feeding has become a priority and many farmers will make switches to the crop portfolio depending on when the much needed rain occurs.

The crops are being sown on a dryland basis as there is so little water available per farm.

Crop paddocks are not being prewatered or watered up as any water is being used for watering pasture or grazing cereals or is being kept for spring watering. Some farmers have sold their water.

The farmers said that if they had to buy water for watering up canola, the $480 per megalitre cost for 1.3ML was $624 per hectare. Worth over a tonne, it means canola was too risky and costly.

Our group results have repeatedly shown pre-irrigation for wheat is water inefficient and farmers water early in spring, often in August.

Many wheat paddocks last year achieved great responses of 1.5 to

two tonnes per megalitre over dryland yield.

Hardly any farmers were leaving paddocks out for rice or corn.

Bare paddocks not producing a crop and income are not on.

They said that if there is enough rain to result in an irrigation allocation in spring they will finish off winter crops as prices remain high.

If there was enough allocation for rice or corn they would knockdown or graze a winter crop and sow to rice or corn even if this does not allow full yield potential.

Some said they will sow potential rice layout paddocks to barley as it’s earlier than wheat.

The canola area will be lower as it has the least tolerance to moisture stress as demonstrated last season.

Some farmers have cut it out of the rotation and sowing more wheat or barley.

Many farmers said they plan to

assess canola sowing between midApril and first week of May. If there has not been a break they will switch to barley and oats.

Only odd canola paddocks are being watered up by flood or spray.

Many farmers are sowing grazing wheat varieties like Wedgetail, Kittyhawk, Naparoo,Yarran, Mammoth and Echidna oats, and canola for sheep and lamb feed.

After a season of experience with Planet and Spartacus CL barleys, many more farmers are sowing these varieties.

Spartacus CL is good for brome grass control.

A lot more barley is going in as it can handle dry conditions, lack of subsoil moisture and has sowing date flexibility.

Farmers said they will cut starter fertiliser rates in last year’s nil to low yielding paddocks.

Where the soil Colwell Phosphorus test is 35mg/kg they can come back to 50kg/ha starter fertiliser instead of the usual 80-90kg/ha MAP or DAP in dryland paddocks.

Irrigated paddocks which yielded well last season will have normal — 80-125kg/ha — starter rates.

The overall fertiliser strategy is to use starter fertiliser at sowing, assess the season and yield potential and apply topdressed urea accordingly for the nitrogen requirement.

Drought, feed and heat stress will have major impacts on 2019 autumn, winter and spring lambing and NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) has advised producers to condition score ewes before joining and pregnancy scan after joining.

DPI livestock researcher Gordon Refshauge said these two tools will help ensure producers can manage the nutritional needs of their flocks to get the best outcomes this season. ‘‘Ewes should have a condition score of at least 2.5 prior to joining, ewes in a poorer condition are less likely to conceive,’’ Dr Refshauge said. ‘‘Two weeks on improved feed prior to joining for ewes scoring less than 2.5 will lift fertility and ovulation rates for those leaner ewes. ‘‘Ewes should be pregnancy scanned to identify dry, single and twin bearing ewes. ‘‘The sooner ewes can be scanned the better, as feed can be matched to suit single and twin bearing ewes, and there may still be time to rejoin dry ewes — shortening day lengths give ewes a natural lift in fertility and ovulation rates.’’

The ideal time to scan is 75 to 100 days after joining commenced.

Scanning identifies stock which can be sold and allows producers to target feed to sin-

gle and twin-bearing ewes, which require different levels of feeding during mid and late pregnancy.

Late spring and early summer rains can deliver pasture growth, which will lead to an increased ovulation rate, higher pregnancy rates and more twins.

Twin-bearing ewes which conceived in low body condition will need improved nutrition from mid-pregnancy or the health of the ewe and lamb production can be impaired.

Dr Refshauge said high temperatures will also impact on the ability of sheep to produce lambs. ‘‘Ewes experiencing nine hours of 41°C temperatures lose 100 per cent of embryos up to three days old,’’ he said. ‘‘The highest risk conditions are hot days coupled with hot nights, as sheep cannot lose heat from the body.’’

Low pregnancy rates may be due to rams suffering from ovine brucellosis or in low condition, which will impair sperm count and sperm quality.

When rejoining flocks with high percentages of dry ewes, suspect rams should not be used and producers should contact a veterinarian if brucellosis is a concern.

Retired Toc. shearer to judge in France It’s exciting times ahead for Mark Baldwin, who will travel to Le Dorat, France in July for the 2019 World Shearing and Woolhandling Championships.

Mr Baldwin — a retired Tocumwal sheep shearing contractor who now owns transport company Baldwin Buses — will judge on behalf of Sports Shear Australia, specifically representing NSW. The 61 year-old spent about 35 years in the shearing industry and the last 25 years as a shearing judge.

He was nominated to judge at the event at last year’s Sports Shear Australia AGM year, and later officially selected.

While in France Mr Baldwin said he will be judging across the ‘‘front and back’’ shearing sections of the competition, depending where he’s allocated. ‘‘If you’re out the front, which is on the board, you have to make sure there are no second cuts, which devalues the fleece, no skin cuts and the shearer isn’t knocking the sheep or fleece around. They must do it in a manner where they put the sheep out properly. ‘‘When judging out the back you judge the wool left on and skin cuts. Both will result in penalties. You tally the score up and at the end of the event they’re also judged for time. ‘‘All competitors are judged for time against the person who finishes first; you can pick up penalty points for being too slow. It’s not only about being clean, but clean with speed.’’

The week-long competition will include a combination of world championship and French events.

The Australian team — one of 35 country teams competing — will comprise three machine shearers, two wool handlers, two blade shearers, one manager, one shearing judge and one woolhandling judge.

The Australian shearers will most likely travel to France in late June for trials before the July 1 to 7 competitions.

Mr Baldwin said he can’t allow any bias towards the Australian shearers to effect his judging. ‘‘I have no interest where the shearer is, from regardless of where I’m judging. If I’m on the board I’m looking down and if he cuts that fleece staple in half or scratches the sheep, then ‘bang’ I have him! ‘‘Once I’ve done my time another judge will tap me on the shoulder and I go onto the next shearer. ‘‘If there’s six shearers on the board, we have seven judges and once the shearing starts and they take the belly off the first rotation starts,’’ he said.

Mr Baldwin said due to his longevity in judging, he’s made life long friends and is looking forward to catching up with people who share the same passion. ‘‘Because I’ve been judging for so long I know a lot of the other judges. ‘‘They’ve all worked for many years in the industry and want to put something back into it.’’

Not only is Mr Baldwin a shearing judge but has been fortunate to referee for the World Sheep Shearing Records Society for about 20 years. He was its chair for nine years.

The first was the Nine Hour Strong World Ewe record where one New Zealand shearer shore 731 and beat the record by 10 sheep; he was shearing one sheep every 45 seconds. ‘‘And you need to remember that’s catching, shearing and putting it out unassisted.

He can’t have any help with his gear even if he drinks his water he must pick up the cup himself. ‘‘Two days later a young Irish lad competed in the Nine Hour Strong Wool Lamb record. He shore 867 lambs and beat the record by one sheep; about 35 seconds per lamb all day. ‘‘World records are different to competition shearing. Every half hour we count the sheep out and don’t go over them like competition shearing; we have the sheep standing and it’s rated. ‘‘Every sheep has a different rating so Merino has 18, crossbreds 15 and strong wools have 12. The rating can’t go higher than what’s set out or they get a warning and it’s over after the second warning. ‘‘They have an incredibly high standard they must meet.’’

judged world records in England, New Zealand and Australia. ‘‘One of the most interesting places I judged was at the National Show in Bloemfontein, South Africa,’’ he said. ‘‘We were judging both blade and ma-

chine shearing, and the best sheep I’ve ever seen shorn was done by the blades; absolutely beautiful. ‘‘The cuts were smooth and that’s because they use a smaller blade to what we use in Australia.’’

Mr Baldwin said every country has its own unique speciality of shearing methods. ‘‘It all depends on the sheep as well. In fine wool or Merinos, Australia is the leading country. But when it comes to strong wools it’s New Zealand, however the Irish and English boys are starting to catch up to them. ‘‘The South Africans are the best at blade shearing as 60 per cent of shearing in South Africa is still blade shearing. ‘‘I do prefer the machine shearing simply because we don’t have that skill (blade shearing) in Australia any more.’’

Mr Baldwin’s interest in judging came about from his contracting work.

He said it was an important skill to acquire as he found it as a way to give back to the shearing community. ‘‘I had some shearers working for me who were competition shearers and they asked me to come to a competition in Shepparton and it snowballed from there. ‘‘I was in the industry as well as running between 40 to 60 people, and I felt that’s how I’m making an income so I wanted to put something back into the shearing industry. ‘‘Being a judge has allowed me to have access to the best shearers in the country for my contracting business. ‘‘There are some exceptional shearers in the Southern Riverina, including Cobram’s Jason Wingfield, a two time Australian shearing champion.’’

Better working breed in demand Colin Bryce knows that owning the perfect working dog is vital to any livestock farm.

For the past 35 years the Jerilderie farmer has been breeding his own working kelpies.

Mr Bryce said he breeds dogs for the perfect combination of work and ability, type of dog and correct genetics. ‘‘For me it’s very important that the animal in the back of the ute and animal that’s with you all day is a really good type. ‘‘It has to have good confirmation, plenty of leg underneath him so he can run all day, which he needs to do, but you also have to be proud of the animal you’re breeding. As a breeder you want to be enhancing the type of dog. ‘‘Work and ability is the most important thing and what you need to look for is cast.

They need to cast in a large paddock to pick the sheep up single handedly. ‘‘If I have infrastructure in the paddock with contour banks and I can’t get to the sheep, the dog has to be able to get and bring them back. ‘‘The dog also has to have the ability to pick up all of the sheep and not get two or three back as soon as possible, he has to get all of the sheep back and be prepared to wait for the slowest in the mob. ‘‘Another thing the dog should do is bark.

If I’m doing yard work like drenching and vaccinating to prepare them for shearing, the dog has to be able to bark as a forcing mechanism. ‘‘They can get to the front of the herd and get them coming forward then come back to keep the mob flowing so all of that just takes a lot of practice.’’

Mr Bryce said his breeding efforts gained attention when he had a run of success at dog trials and the Jerilderie Working Dog Auction. ‘‘Originally it started just to breed for me and my mates. I had a working dog that won an open utility trial — an exceptionally good dog. ‘‘I then topped the Jerilderie Working Dog Auction about 10 years ago and that’s where the demand came onto me to supply people with my breed of pups. ‘‘It wasn’t something I decided upon, the demand just happened. We then set up a website and people who had purchased my

dogs wanted to start breeding from them and registered. ‘‘It meant I needed to chase up 30 odd years of breeding for every kelpie.’’

While most dogs are different, it takes two years on average — from birth — to fully train a working dog. ‘‘I use mature dogs on working days because they are stress free and I might have the younger dogs training with a few sheep around the shed. ‘‘If I’ve been on the tractor all day I’ll spend five to ten minutes training the younger dogs by doing yard work, where there’s no stress because it is a closed environment that I can control. ‘‘Avoid raising your voice with the dogs because they can get confused.’’

Mr Bryce has nine adult kelpies on his farm and three puppies.

At this year’s Jerilderie Working Dog Auction in February, Mr Bryce offered up two of his dogs.

‘Canawindra Toughy’ was passed in and ‘Canawindra Buster’ sold for $3000 to a Deniliquin buyer.

Mr Bryce said Buster didn’t reach his full potential market price due to the auction style. ‘‘My dogs are used to being out in the open and not in an enclosed atmosphere with a lot of people and noise. ‘‘Even though they’re great dogs here (on the farm), and they work extremely well, they did have stage fright and didn’t realise their true ability.’’

As a life member of the Jerilderie Apex Club, which runs the auction, Mr Bryce said his dogs will continue to be available at the annual event.

However he joked he might send an apology in 2020 if his wife had anything to do with it. ‘‘We have a caravan in the shed and my wife is very keen on caravanning,’’ he said. ■ Jerilderie’s Colin Bryce with three kelpie puppies.

Alpaca stud’s winning form It was about three years ago that Courtney and Drew Plattfuss decided to become alpaca breeders.

The Blighty couple are still slowly building their Galaview Alpacas bloodline portfolio and are already starting to see success.

With Trevis Bird from Kialla’s Grey Gum Alpacas, Courtney and Drew own male alpaca ‘Fawkner’, who won the Supreme Light Fawn Huacaya Fleece at the Wodonga Show earlier this month.

The fleece was shorn in October. ‘‘The judges were looking for low micron, which is as similar to Merino fleece as you can get it, but alpacas are a long way off that as they don’t have the lanolin as a Merino would,’’ Mrs Plattfuss said. ‘‘The judges are also looking for a high frequency crimp which carries throughout the whole body. ‘‘With Fawkner they remarked he had that high frequency crimp across the staple.

He managed to carry the crimp throughout his body which is important for consistency. ‘‘I was shocked and elated (to win), and I was also happy for Trevis because he’s bred this alpaca himself. He also had five other fleeces in show and gained the highest score all up.’’

Mrs Plattfuss said deciding to buy in on Fawkner will continue to pay dividends for the Blighty stud. ‘‘Trevis bred Fawkner and we really liked it, so we decided to purchase a half share to be used as a stud alpaca,’’ Mrs Plattfuss said. ‘‘Fawkner’s first babies are just starting to hit the ground now and they look very promising. ‘‘We (Drew and I) also own another stud male — ‘Bruce’ — and we’ve also won awards with him.’’

The average life of an alpaca is up to 25 years, but it can vary when you take into account breeding and workload.

Mrs Plattfuss said they’re an easy animal to breed. ‘‘Alpacas are quite low maintenance, friendly and easier to deal with than cattle or other livestock. ‘‘Compared to sheep they’re a lot cleaner.

You mainly need to clip their toe nails, if their teeth get too long you need to trim them and of course shearing the alpaca which is only done once per year.

‘‘Alpacas are friendly with humans, except when the females are pregnant but they are still easy to handle.’’

Mrs Plattfuss said alpaca fleece is also becoming a growing market among wool types. ‘‘They’re starting to export a high number of alpacas to China and they’re using the fleece in a lot of products. In Australia I’m starting to see more alpaca fleece on sale,’’ she said. ‘‘Bigger brands like Country Road is one example that’s using it in their winter range.’’

Galaview Alpacas currently has 55 alpacas on the property bred for stud bloodline, fleece and wethers.

Mrs Plattfuss said stud development has been slower than anticipated, but she said they are happy to take their time. ‘‘We haven’t progressed as far as we would have liked because we’ve been blessed with a child. Drew was a farmer up until this year, and we’ve now started our own excavation business. ‘‘Even though we might not be where we should be, we’re not too worried and we’re still loving it. ‘‘What we plan to do in the future is work on our stud bloodlines. You need to hope you have a females and then can spend the money on stud males.’’

Mrs Plattfuss said the drought and the NSW Murray having no water allocation made available so far this irrigation year has also been an impediment to their progress.

She said when opportunities improve, they intend to grow their own feed on their property. ‘‘We dry feed our alpacas at the moment.

We are planning on developing our farm to water the paddocks and become self sufficient by growing our own hay. ‘‘Although we have 55 alpacas we would like to see an increase of numbers. But we would still cap it at 100. ‘‘We’re still in the building phase of the stud. An alpaca’s gestation is 11 and a half months and don’t twin, which means you’re looking at producing one alpaca a year.

Rice industry awards Rice Extension, in conjunction with AgriFutures Australia, has launched the inaugural 2019 Rice Industry Awards and is now calling for nominations.

This exciting new initiative focuses on showcasing the best growers and farming practices, sustainability and business management.

It is aimed at bringing growers and industry together to celebrate the current and future success of the rice industry.

The 2019 Rice Industry Awards will comprise three categories: ● SunRice Grower of the Year Award – the ultimate award which recognises innovation, new technology and latest research outcomes adopted in the rice industry. The recipient of this award will showcase high yields and high water use efficiency grown in a sustainable way with successful adoption of new technology and innovation. ● Rice Extension Highest Yield for C19 Award – recognising growers who have achieved the highest medium, short and

long grain yield. Nominees must have grown a minimum of 30 hectares. ● Ricegrowers’ Association Honorary Councillor – recognising someone who demonstrates a commitment to the rice industry through outstanding service or leadership, over a period of ten years or more. Nominees can be a rice grower, researcher, agronomist, industry employee, or other service provider.

SunRice Grower of the Year Award nominations open in April, while nominations for the other two awards opened earlier this month.

Judging and evaluation is expected to take place over June and July, with all winners announced at the Ricegrowers Association of Australia’s annual conference dinner in August. At the end of the year, a field day will be hosted at the Grower of the Year’s property.

Schools comp. launched at wethers day More than 120 high school students from across the Riverina recently took part in a initial training day on wether lambs in Jerilderie.

Held at ‘The Yanko’ and supported by the Cameron family, the day was to teach the students about the importance of animal health, nutrition and day-to-day management of the commercial Merino wethers.

It also marked the start of the inaugural Riverina School Wethers Competitions, which will run over the next six months.

Participating schools are Finley, Deniliquin, Yanco, Hay, Hillston, Moama Grammar, Ballarat Grammar, Narrandera, Wade, Griffith and Coleambally.

The challenge allows students to have first-hand engagement with the sheep industry and is based on a similar challenge running in Dubbo for seven years.

Facilitator and Finley High School ag teacher Gary Webb said it was about establishing the rules and providing correct information to the students for the challenge. ‘‘All the students were behaved well and you could tell were really taking in the information. ‘‘Each school was randomly allocated seven wethers and the students will take care of them for the next six months. ‘‘This challenge gives the students the opportunity to learn more about wool and fleece and how the final product ends up.’’

In August, one day before the annual Riverina Sheep Expo in Deniliquin, the students will attend an event in Conargo where they participate in the shearing,

Federal, NSW Govt. invest in counselling There will be more helping hands for farmers facing hardship with the Federal Coalition Government investing a further $3.7 million in the Rural Financial Counselling Service.

The extra funding brings the coalition’s commitment to the service to $77 million.

Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said the RFCS had given crucial support to farming families during recent floods and drought. ‘‘Rural Financial Counsellors are our angels on the ground. One of many things they do is fill out Farm Household Allowance applications for farmers — for free,’’ Mr Littleproud said. ‘‘The RFCS itself will decide how best to use the extra $3.7 million. ‘‘This free service helps farmers cut through red tape and access all the support available to them. ‘‘Since August the RFCS hotline has received more than 1,300 calls for assistance.”

The NSW Government has also increased its mental health commitment with three new frontline mental health workers appointed to assist Southern NSW. Among 19 across the state, they are being referred to as ‘farm gate counsellors’’.

Teams of three wethers will be exhibited by schools and judged first on their ability to produce wool and meat over the next five years.

They are then shorn, and fleece testing is performed to determine their wool value.

The final stage is where wethers are weighed and ultrasound scanned for eye muscle depth and fat depth and judged for their meat value.

A champion team is awarded for the wether team with the highest combined meat and wool value.

The schools are also judged for the ‘Best Presented School’ and ‘Champion School’ awards, based on presentation, cleanliness and knowledge of the Merino sheep and wool industry.

Being part of the challenge also gives students the opportunity to rub shoulders with industry leaders, and to make contacts to explore job opportunities in the industry.

Mr Webb said he hopes the Riverina School Wethers Challenge can show the positive sides of agriculture to potential future farmers. ‘‘If you look at the year we’ve had, I wouldn’t be surprised if many say ‘why would I go into agriculture?’, But we need these type of students who are passionate about ag to go into the industry,’’ Mr Webb said. ‘‘The program in Dubbo started with about eight schools however it’s massive now with about 40 schools. ‘‘The teachers there often comment on how much you can achieve from it.’’

Rice leaders go to Vietnam Finley rice grower Warren Lang believes Vietnam has the potential to be strong growth area for SunRice.

Mr Lang and four other Riverina rice industry representatives travelled to Vietnam in early March to establish connections in the overseas rice market.

The trip, which was organised as part of Ricegrowers Association of Australia’s Established Leaders Program, was coordinated after SunRice expanded its reach in the country by purchasing a Vietnamese rice mill. ‘‘It holds a really exciting future for SunRice. There’s a lot of diversity, strong water supply and an appetite to accept investment from Australia,’’ Mr Laing said. ‘‘They’re keen to work hand-in-hand with SunRice to forge a good supply chain to come out of Vietnam. ‘‘Culturally it’s a fascinating place and, from what we could make of it, hopefully it can supply a long and strong region for SunRice to partner with. ‘‘I can see Vietnam as an area they can be growing varieties of rice we don’t grow here in Australia.’’

RGA president Jeremy Morton is another participant in the Established Leaders Program, and said he enjoyed the chance to see the mill and gain an understanding of the Vietnamese producers.

‘‘The mill should be up in full operation in September,’’ Mr Morton said. ‘‘With the amount of work that is happening, it is an interesting contrast in Vietnam to what’s happening in Australia right now. ‘‘In Vietnam it is happening straight away, but if you tried to do this in Australia it would take two years just to get approval.’’

Mr Morton said the new mill in Vietnam would become a backup for Australian farmers struggling to produce crops in low to no allocation years, like in NSW Murray this year. ‘‘Once you are out of the market someone will take your place, so it is very hard to get back in,’’ he said. ‘‘This mill will have the ability to provide the SunRice market in place of Australian growers who are unable to produce what is needed, continuing to make rice a viable option in the Riverina. We also looked into the research around breeding in Vietnam for the tropical climate in order to have varieties acceptable in the market. ‘‘We asked the Vietnamese farmers if they could have anything that they value, what it would be? They said to cut out the middle man. usually ends on March 31, but had been extended this year due to prevailing dry weather conditions in the Southern Border Team area. ‘‘The extension means anyone wishing to light a fire in the Albury City, Greater Hume, Federation, and Berrigan local government areas will still require a permit,’’ Insp Gray said. ‘‘Residents must also notify neighbouring land owners and their local fire authority 24 hours prior to burning.’’

Fire permits are available for agricultural burning of grass and stubble, however the burning of timbers and rubbish is prohibited.

Insp Gray said the decision to extend the Bush Fire Danger Period was made in consultation with other land managers and local NSW RFS group captains. ‘‘These decisions are never made lightly and involve a number of stakeholders from the local area,’’ he said.

Coming into the school holidays and Easter period, members of the public are urged to check local conditions and rules around the use of fire, and should contact local councils to check on rules around burning in their local areas. ‘‘Now is not the time for anyone to become complacent about the risk of bush fires and I urge all residents to have a completed Bush Fire Survival Plan available, and to report any unattended fires they see to Triple Zero (000) immediately.”

Nurturing our rice industry leaders The Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia (RGA) is working to develop leaders in the rice industry and within the broader community associated with the industry.

To achieve this, the RGA has developed the Rice Industry Leadership Program.

RGA leadership coordinator Ainsley Massina said the rice industry has always been active in its leadership development and running leadership programs since 2006.

She said this new program is an extension of that, and includes three levels of leadership programs, based on participants’ previous experience and knowledge — Established Leaders, Foundation of Leadership and Introduction to the Rice Industry. ‘‘When funding became available, the RGA decided to submit an application to increase the scale of the program and build more structure around developing leaders and succession for the industry,’’ Ms Massina said.

The Rice Industry Leadership Program has been funded by the Federal Government’s $5 million Leadership in Agricultural Industries Fund and by the five key organisations servicing the rice industry — the RGA, Rice Extension, AgriFutures Australia, SunRice and The Rice Marketing Board of NSW (RMB). ‘‘We aim to build the participants’ capability, skills and confidence through the Rice Industry Leadership Program.

For example, in all three programs corporate governance is a key topic covered,’’ Ms Massina said. ‘‘In the Established Leaders program participants have completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course ‘Foundations of Directorship’. In organising this program, we had the opportunity to bring this course to the local region, also enabling another 20 local leaders from across the community to complete this well-renowned program.’’

Five people are currently completing the Established Leaders program, which is targeting people who aspire to be directors within the rice industry.

Those in the Established Leaders pro-

gram have already spent time with the SunRice executive and directors in Sydney and have travelled to Vietnam to better understand the complexity of strategy and operations for SunRice as an international business. ‘‘To be eligible for the Established Leaders program, participants must have demonstrated a strong commitment to the rice industry,’’ Ms Massina said. ‘‘Participants are currently, or have previously, been representatives to the RGA, the Rice Research and Development Advisory Panel and other important community and industry organisations.’’

Ms Massina said 19 people have also completed the Foundations of Leadership Program. ‘‘This program is targeted at emerging leaders who have really shown an interest in taking on leadership roles across the rice industry and supporting communities. ‘‘Foundation of Leadership is about benefiting the rice industry and the broader community. Developing people who may sit on the board of an irrigator group, local lands groups or other community organisations.’’

Fourteen people also took part in the Introduction to the Rice Industry course in Deniliquin.

Activities included learning about governance, corporate structure, advocacy, networking and communication.

Keeping with a local theme to the region, guest facilitators included Conargo’s Perin Davey and Finley’s Jane Harris.

Four participants will be selected from stage one of the program to attend a two day workshop in Canberra, to meet with leaders in organisations such as Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, the National Farmers’ Federation, the National Irrigators’ Council and Australian Government.

They will further develop networking and advocating skills learned in the Introduction to the Rice Industry course.
