A full range of food and refreshments is available throughout the site, at 10 locations.

For the comfort, safety and enjoyment of all persons the EFD committee reserves the right to:

Parking: Disabled parking is available in the East Car Park near Public Entrance Gate 11; and West Car Park near Public Entrance Gate 2.

• Refuse entry to any persons deemed to be intoxicated and/or disorderly or likely to cause a breach of the peace.

• Remove persons causing disturbances, breaching the peace or refusing to comply with requests from the EFD.

Disabled facilities

Persons entering the site must adhere to Occupational Health & Safety legislation.

Special care should be taken at all times to protect yourself and others against any loss or injury.

Persons entering the site may be photographed, filmed or taped and it is deemed that a person by entering the site consents to the EFD or parties appointed by the EFD to broadcast, publish and use any photographs, film, recording or images for promotional purposes.

Persons must obey all signs, notices and directions given by the EFD whilst on site.

Baby feed and change facilities are available at Site 542 next to First Aid on 5th Avenue. There are also baby change tables available in toilet blocks 7 & 9.

Public Bar

Site 296A is hosted this year by the Elmore Football Netball Club.

The following restricted/prohibited items are not permitted on site without written consent: • Alcoholic beverages, Flares/Fireworks, Laser Pointers, Knives and other dangerous weapons.

President’s Report Well here we are again, me, sitting at my computer writing my welcome to our fabulous Agricultural Community to this year’s Elmore Field days Agriculture is a challenging game and in the catchment areas that our visitors travel from this year certainly is no exception. It never ceases to amaze me how resilient and community minded our industry and communities are. Lets hope that by the time you are reading this we have seen some rain where needed and we are all in a better place. If not we will do what farming communities do best and pull together and get through the tough times as best we can.

Even if it has rained there are folks out there that are in need of our support. With this in mind if you can spare just a few dollars to someone in more need than yourself please tap your card at our donation points at the ticket boxes and community catering outlets to contribute to our drought relief drive. Each tap will be a $2 donation from your card to our committee’s drought effort.

Few people are ever fully prepared for an emergency like a bushfire outbreak and the speed at which the fire front can travel. Consequently they often allow little time to implement an effective fire defence.

Davey has a list of recommendations for effective management and maintenance for consumers, ahead of the fire season.

1. Know the machine: All members of the household need to be proficient in the location, operation and fitting of attachments like inlet and outlet hoses to the fire pump.

2. Practice: A well rehearsed and documented fire plan is critical to personal survival.

3. Fuel - Petrol: Many people fail to recognise that petrol has a limited life, losing its volatility and effectively becoming ‘stale’. A simple and recommended solution is to change the fuel every two months, either by running the pump or draining it of fuel. Better still, both leading petrol engine manufacturers offer a fuel stabiliser which will dramatically extend the life of the fuel, but it must be added when new fuel is purchased.

4. Fuel - Diesel: Has a longer shelf life but it generally needs to be stored at low ambient temperatures to extend the storage time. Major fuel companies expect diesel fuel to have 12 months or longer life at an ambient temperature of 20ºC, or six months at an ambient temperature of 30ºC. 5. Engine oils are another consideration and individual engine manufacturers offer their own specially branded engine oils to best suit their engines. Synthetic multi-grade engine oil is NOT a suitable alternative, so it is important to follow the manufacturer’s engine lubrication recommendations.

6. Running the engine regularly will ensure that oil is well distributed around the moving parts to provide best lubrication and a longer working life.

7. Air cleaners are another important consideration, so ensure your pump set has adequate clean air access. The air cleaner or filter needs to be checked and replaced as per the recommendation of the engine manufacturer.

8. Keeping the engine cool also has a dramatic effect on the power it can deliver. Protecting the pump from radiant heat in a flame proof enclosure is the ultimate solution, while adding a mist spray around the pump or its enclosure will aid cooling and humidify the air.

9. A general maintenance regime involving regular checks will ensure that fuel lines are in good condition, the recoil starter works and a regular service schedule is adhered to will pay dividends.

10. Check the plumbing: Time spent investigating and maintaining the water system is also important.

11. Check for leaves, debris and sticks: These can impede the inlet system, while for permanent installations, a foot valve and strainer at the end of the suction line can overcome obstructions.

12. The system should be checked for air leaks and to check that all gaskets and seals are in good order.

13. Having an underground ring main installed around your property with durable hydrant or standpipe outlets can give you much greater coverage.

So, as the summer fire season approaches the traditional motto of ‘be prepared’ applies. Establish your fire plan early. Adequately brief and train all family members in its resources and features.

There will be fun for the whole family at the 55th Elmore Field Days, with the event making the most of the school holidays.

The annual three-day event starts on October 2, and will bring together the best of agriculture to inspire and inform visitors� With hundreds of exhibitors, everything from tools, hardware and machinery to cattle crushes and the latest technology will be on show at the Elmore Events Centre� There will be plenty for kids big and small to enjoy on their school holidays� Jumping castles, balloon animals and the heritage draught horses are sure to captivate their attention, while camel rides will also be on offer for the first time� Elmore Field Days public relations officer John Giffin said with hundreds of exhibitors and the general interest pavilions, attendees would be spoilt for choice� “It’s basically a one-stop shop for all your farming needs� If we haven’t got an exhibitor there that has what you’re after, they’ll certainly know what direction to head you in,” Mr Giffin said� “It is really an event for the whole family, there’s plenty of general interest and recreation exhibitors 12

covering everything from fishing and camping�” A wide range of machinery will be on show, and in-paddock demonstrations give onlookers a chance to see the machines in action� “The big machinery is the key attraction for the bigger kids; you don’t have to be a little kid to enjoy hopping into the big machinery,” Mr Giffin said� The famed Ag Art Wear competition will also return for another year, with crowds treated to a masterclass on turning everyday farm materials into intricate and incredible fashion� Parades will showcase the wonderful creations twice a day� Elmore Field Days will be held from October 2 to 4, from 8�30 am to 5�30 pm, at the Elmore Events Centre at 48 Rosaia Rd, Elmore� Tickets are available at the gate priced at $20 for adults, $10 for children 12 years and over, with children under 12 admitted free� For more information visit www.elmorefielddays.com.au or phone 5432 6176� For updates follow the Elmore Field Days Facebook account�

One-stop shop for farm machinery William Adams Ag Shepparton is heading back to where it all began — Elmore Field Days.

Four years ago the Shepparton branch of William Adams Ag was launched at the event and the business has not looked back� Branch manager Christian Barnett said the business had grown significantly since its Elmore debut� “It was our first real announcement that we were going to open up in Shepparton and be a player in the region,” Mr Barnett said�

the Shepparton branch and parts for all brands its sells, Williams Adam Ag is a one-stop shop� “We have service utes as well for onfarm work,” Mr Barnett said� “We cover breakdowns during the busy season, we’re on call around the clock and do rebuilding and maintenance work throughout the year in the workshop�”

The display of weird, wacky and wonderful garments is now in its 18th year and will see a new category introduced for new designers� Joining the existing categories of Avant Garde, Designer, 18 Years and Under and Hats, the new Novice category is hoping to welcome a host of new entrants to the competition� “Every year is a strong competition so we’re hoping to encourage people who haven’t entered before to get involved and have a go,” Elmore Field Days general interest chair Lorraine Trewick said� “Once they get a taste they’re often hooked!”

Having brought the competition idea over from New Zealand in 2000, Mrs Trewick said it had been wonderful to see it grow over the years into a fixture of the three-day event� Over the years items including bones, spark plugs, tractor tyre cubes and even sheep manure lacquered to look like beads have taken a walk down the runway� With the competition growing fiercer each year, Mrs Trewick said the designs continued to get more elaborate and impressive� “The top designers are doing a lot of research and finding some really unique items,” she said�

New models on show Efficiency and suitability are two of the most important criteria when farmers are updating their machinery collections, and there is plenty to consider at the Elmore Field Days with exhibitors showcasing some of the latest agricultural technology.

The 525–60 Agri Compact Loadall and the 4000 Series Fastrac, recently introduced to the JCB Construction Equipment Australia range, are ready to be put to the test by farmers and can be inspected at the Michaels of Donald site� While it is compact enough to access older farm buildings with doorways less than 2 m wide, the 525–60 Agri Loadall has greater reach capabilities — usually only found on larger telescopic handlers� The 6 m lift height makes it versatile and well-suited to tasks such as stacking bales� With a 2500 kg lift capacity — and an improved loading performance of 800 kg at 3�3 m forward reach — the 525–60 Agri Loadall is perfect for small to medium-sized farming

After being a big hit at the event last year, Elmore Field Days committee member Philip Neale said they were thrilled to welcome back the working horses� “It caused a lot of interest with the young ones and it’s really interesting to see how far we’ve come in just a generation,” Mr Neale said�

Step back in time at Elmore Field Days and enjoy the majestic sight of heritage working horses.

A throwback to heritage farming will be on show at the field days, with heritage draught horses working throughout the event.

With automated tractors and state-of-the-art technology also on show at the field days, the heritage draught horses are a reminder to many of the history of agriculture� On show throughout the day, Mr Neale encouraged people young and old to pull up a hay bale and take in the show�

More than a dozen horses from the Heritage Draught Horse Club will take to the ring over the three-day event, demonstrating ploughing and harrowing techniques�

“The group that run it are really enthusiastic and hands-on and just really good to talk to,” he said�

Electricity-related deaths and accidents involving powerlines are preventable. Sadly, Energy Safe Victoria has seen 81 incidents since 2016, including a fatality earlier this year in Kergunyah.

As the state’s independent energy regulator, ESV provides tips and procedures for safe working conditions outdoors and avoiding hazards which can cause injury or death by electrocution.

Everyone involved in the delivery of materials has a duty of care to ensure their own safety and that of others.

Electrocutions caused by trucks hitting powerlines on rural properties are on the increase in Victoria.

Powerlines are an integral part of our outdoor landscape, which makes them easy to forget. With the sun in your eyes, trees in your line of vision or if you are watching something else, you may not see how close you are to powerlines. Remember, trucks and machinery do not have to make contact with the powerlines for injury or electrocution to occur — electricity can jump gaps.

Be aware of what is above you if your work involves: • Using tall machinery, such as cranes or augers • Driving tall vehicles • Raising the tipper tray of trucks

Safety tips to reduce risk • Identify — identify all areas where powerlines cross properties.

• Hazard map — identify all electrical hazards before starting work; if in any doubt, contact the local electricity distribution company.

Spotter required between 3–6.4m of powerlines Open area outside 6.4m of powerlines taking orders, the delivery point on the farm for the load, the proximity of powerlines and what safety precautions are in place.

• Move — relocate large delivery storage sites to a safe area away from powerlines.

• Don’t park underneath — never raise the tray of tipper trucks when underneath powerlines.

• Safe delivery — suppliers of bulk materials must determine, when

Snake show is a thrilling lesson Snakes and reptiles will thrill crowds at the Elmore Field Days, with some of the deadliest snakes in the world set to make an appearance.

A regular at the field days for more than a decade, Reptile Awareness Displays of Australia owner Allan Burnett said he looked forward to coming back each year� The former paramedic has continued to look for ways to save lives and said sharing reptile education and first aid information was the way to do that�

Pumping up firefighting systems Davey is Australia’s international water products company; designing, building and selling products to protect and enhance people’s lives with water.

Ewes for the future — fertility, lambs and wool The new trial at the Elmore Field Days started in January 2015. The design is similar to the previous trial, but the breed groups are different.

In this second trial three crossbred ewe types will be compared with three Merino types. This trial

emphasis is on ‘fertility’. The six breed types were each randomly selected from 3 properties, 14 ewe lambs per property, for a total of 252 ewe lambs.

The ewes are joined annually to either White Suffolk or Poll Dorset rams and

run together as one mob except at lambing; there are five opportunities to lamb, the first as ewe lambs.

The results of lambing percentages, lamb growth, wool and easy care characters are being released as they progressively become available.

Multimeats are a composite breed based on White Suffolk and Border Leicester genetics. They supply rams that are DNA tested to carry 2 copies of the Booroola fertility gene. These rams breed first-cross ewes from Merinos. The first-cross lambs carry one copy of the gene.

Multimeat breeders claim these ewes consistently rear 30% more lambs than normal crossbreds.

CASHMORE-OAKLEA PERFORMANCE MATERNALS (COMPOSITES)

Cashmore-Oaklea Performance Maternals (Composites) have bred sheep from the following breeds: Coopworth, East Friesian, Finn, Border Leicester, Prime SAMM, Texel, Poll Dorset, White Suffolk, Merino, Corriedale, NZ Romney and Perendale. They have achieved a reputation for good lambing percentages, assisted by the hybrid vigour between the various breeds.

Performance, support and price a no-brainer for baler purchasing decision With five generations behind them, it’s a fair bet that members of the Somers family, who farm south of Warracknabeal, Victoria, have made some good decisions in their time.

Hay is a big deal for the Somers family, making up about 30 per cent of the 4000 ha mixed farming operation�

For Scott Somers, who is currently at the helm, good decisions are often aided by good relationships� When it came to choosing a new baler he turned to his trusted machinery supplier, Victorian Case IH dealer O’Connors�

Mr Somers’ summer program can include as many as 12 000 bales, and with much of it destined for the export market, he was looking for a large square baler that could produce high-density bales without compromising on consistency, productivity and reliability�

The team recommended the Case IH LB434S XL, which was released into the Australian market in mid-2017� Having not used a Case IH baler before, Mr Somers was keen to check it out� “Eighty per cent of our machinery is Case IH so it made sense to consider the Case IH Large Square Baler for compatibility, plus we have a great relationship with O’Connors,” Mr Somers said� “They offered me a good deal and I knew I would be well supported from an after-sales perspective�” Of course, the baler’s performance had to match the Case IH service — and there were no complaints from Mr Somers�

“Early on, before we had rain on our hay, we were averaging around 750 kg a bale,” Mr Somers said� “After rain we came back to a more average program and saw bale weights between 670–700 kg in oaten hay� “It was up around 700 kg in perfect conditions and back to 670 kg as the day deteriorated� Achieving that was really good�” According to O’Connors Warracknabeal’s Geoff Leith the greater weights and densities can

be attributed to some new features introduced as part of the LB434S series� “The bale chamber is now 31 per cent longer, having been extended by 80 cm,” Mr Leith said� “When you combine that with automatic feed rate control, you can expect not just better bale shape and greater density but also more consistent density across the day as conditions change�”

For Mr Somers, greater density directly impacts the bottom line via freight costs�

“A lot of farmers might do 1000–2000 bales, with contractors doing their baling,” he said�

“By gaining weight in the bales and not changing the size I can ensure trucks are loaded to full weight, which helps us get our freight rate right,” he said� “We got very square corners so the truckies loved how the bales stacked and I also received multiple calls from end users to comment on how well the bales were presented� That’s the first time I’ve had that — and it’s a nice feeling�” Such a nice feeling, in fact, that Mr Somers is looking to buy a second LB434S and, given the price point, he thinks others should consider following suit�

Taylah, who was recently selected for the national 17-and-under netball squad, joined Wesley College’s boarding community in the Learning in Residence program after receiving a General Excellence Scholarship� “Being part of Glen Waverley’s Learning in Residence program has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Taylah said� Balancing netball with her studies is easy, with her new accommodation a short walk from Wesley College’s state-of-the-art sporting facilities, and private transportation to and from training and games arranged by the college� “It has made it much easier to access training, without having to spend an hour-and-a-half or more in the car, which frees up my time so I can

First time at Elmore for seasoned musician Despite being only 18 years old, musician Luke Harrington is no stranger to the stage.

After starting to perform alongside his mum when he was just 10 years old, the Fosterville local has racked up plenty of hours behind the guitar — including performing at the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival — and is set to wow the crowd throughout the three-day Elmore Field Days event� Heading to the field days for the first time, Mr Harrington said he was looking forward to playing his brand of music for the crowds� With classic ’60s, ’70s and ’80s set to feature in the playlist, including a few fan-favourites, Mr Harrington said he would also perform a host of originals to entertain people as they enjoyed the festivities� Set to hit the stage at the Bendigo Blues and Roots Music Festival for the eighth year in a row in November, Mr Harrington said he was the youngest musician to have played at the festival after he debuted at 10 years old�

pressure seal riser that works with the water pressure to hold the seal tight� “It’s a better product, it’s a solid product which you don’t have to fence around for cows, there’s no leaking, you don’t get wet as you open and close the outlets, it minimises wash or erosion into the paddocks�” The product was developed with the help of local land owner Danny Bergamin who said he started having problems with leaking as soon as he installed the previous style of riser�

Rising from humble beginnings Since Mick Hogan Excavations and Polyirrigation opened its doors in 2007 the Numurkah-based business has expanded rapidly.

What started as general onfarm works and maintenance has developed into a business experienced in poly irrigation and larger civil projects� General manager Mark Langham said despite this growth its family business approach to customer service had remained� “It started off with three excavators and it’s grown very quickly since that point,” Mr Langham said�

“Specialising in pump connections and irrigation systems, we offer a service to supply, weld and install HDPE poly pipelines and we can work with the land owner to help design and install their specific project from start to finish, both large or small�” At its Numurkah site, the business manufactures a range of irrigation components including aluminium slide doors and piped bay outlets�

During the Elmore Field Days people will have the chance to learn about the business’ high pressure riser outlet� Mr Langham said Mick Hogan Excavations and Polyirrigation previously manufactured a standard aluminium-style riser outlet but two years ago launched a product to keep pace with industry changes� “As irrigation designers started to design these high-pressure pump systems the risers weren’t really handling the high pressure, which led to leaking outlets,” he said� “We then developed our new high-

Food for thought It’s never been easier to lend a helping hand to your local community, with a suite of food stalls raising money for local organisations at the Elmore Field Days.

With 17 local and surrounding area organisations involved in the community catering this year, locals from Elmore, Goornong, Rochester, Lockington and Colbinabbin will be manning the catering stations throughout the three-day event� Helping to raise money for schools, kindergartens, recreation reserves and other community organisations, Elmore Field Days’ community catering president Lauren Holmberg said it was all about people coming together to help�

Manning a previous year’s community catering stand at Elmore Field Days are Corrie Holmberg and Michelle Stone.

“Our purpose of involving the community is ‘volunteers volunteering for our community’,” she said� “By local community organisations volunteering in the catering, we are able to distribute our profits each

year between local organisations, which helps with their fundraising�” With some organisations receiving a donation of up to $3700 for volunteering during the event, Mrs Holmberg said it was a wonderful opportunity to lend a hand� With classics including pies, pasties and sausage rolls for sale, there will be something from everyone to enjoy, with home-made sandwiches, rolls and wraps also set to be served up� Two community coffee shops will be on hand to serve coffee and cakes for hungry patrons, while the youngsters will enjoy the milkshakes on offer� Those attending the field days can enjoy a delicious gourmet burger, pizza, calamari or kebab as they watch the heritage draught horses or musical entertainment while those with a sweet tooth can treat themselves to an ice-cream or slushie�
