Focus on agricultural innovation Showcasing all that is new and innovative in the agricultural world is the aim of Elmore Field Days.

Held from October 4 to 6, the annual event highlights the latest farming techniques, equipment and the array of produce grown from the flourishing Elmore region.

The diverse range of patrons include farmers, business owners and families seeking a fun day out and they travel from afar to attend.

“Farmers are always seeking machinery that allows them to be more economical and have greater efficiency,” event

president Derek Shotton said.

“Elmore provides a big learning curve to see what’s out there on the market and everything is all in the one spot so they can compare brands.”

There will be more than 700 stalls and live entertainment from prominent local talent.

The popular Ag Art Wear Competition is back for its 16th year and will see designers create beautiful garments from materials found on the farm or land.

Other highly entertaining elements include the equestrian showcase, demonstrations in the shearing shed and a photography competition where patrons can submit their best shots from the day for the chance to secure a prize or a place

in the 2017 Elmore Field Days calendar.

“One of the things that makes us unique is that there are so many exhibitors and we have in-paddock demonstrations. Not many field days have these,” Mr Shotton said.

There will be many new exhibitors of food, craft and fashion items in the general interest pavilion, while the agribusiness pavilion will be jam-packed with more than 100 exhibitors.

Mental health will be a central focus this year, with two designated areas featuring related guest speakers and activities.

Those who live further afield can still attend the event and make a grand entrance at that, with an air strip on site.

“The air strip makes us unique. You can land (your plane) at the site and walk to the gate,” public relations officer John Giffin said.

“We have a dedicated paddock where people can land their planes, so those interstate can come too.

“We average about 20 to 40 aircraft coming in a day.”

Elmore Field Days will be held from October 4 to 6, from 8.30 am to 5 pm, at the Elmore Events Centre at 48 Rosaia Rd. ACCOMODATION

The field days are held at Elmore Events Centre, 48 Rosaia Rd in Elmore — which adjoins Midland Hwy and is about 2 km east of the Elmore township.

Hotel and motel accommodation can be found in the nearby regional centres of Bendigo, Echuca-Moama and Shepparton.

HOURS The field days site is open from 8.30 am to 5 pm.

CAR PARKING Unlimited free parking is provided adjacent to the entry gates on both sides of the field days site. Disabled parking is available at Gate 2 and Gate 11.

ENTRY COSTS The charge is $18 for adults and $8 for secondary students, GST included.

There is no charge for children under 12. No concessions. Companion Cards accepted.

DOGS Dogs are not permitted on-site, with the exception of assistance dogs.

SITE SERVICES Bendigo Bank ATM services will be provided at site 539, next to the administration office. Baby feeding and changing facilities are available at site 542, beside the St John Ambulance First Aid at site 543.

Mobility scooter and wheelchair hire are available at site 1452, or to prebook call 0428 694 335.

PURCHASES The field days provide a parcel pickup service for equipment items up to 50 kg purchased from exhibitor sites, which are delivered to depots adjacent to the entry gates for collection. A nominal $2 charge is donated to voluntary organisations.

FOOD AND DRINK Local community organisations provide an extensive choice of catering options on-site, along with a number of specialty food vendors during the event. A public bar also operates o- site each day.

AIRCRAFT A marked grassed airstrip is available parallel to Midland Hwy and east of the display area which measures 1000 m in length by 50 m in width.

Former AFL player Jason McCartney, who survived the 2002 Bali bombings, will speak at the Elmore Field Days.

Stalls to get people talking As an ex-farmer, Derek Shotton understands all too well the reservations those in the agricultural industry have about discussing mental health.

The Elmore Field Days president said this year there would be two mental health stalls at the event and a range of related guest speakers.

“Our dairy counterparts are doing it tough (recently) and we are mindful of that,” Mr Shotton said.

“I’m an ex dairy-farmer so I have seen what people are going through.

“There is a focus on dairy, but our grain guys and sheep guys have also been through a tough time too.”

One of the guest speakers will be former North Melbourne footballer Jason McCartney, who will talk about the ordeal he survived in the 2002 Bali bombings.

“Jason, a young Australian with an exceptional talent for AFL, became a national hero in the wake of the Bali bombings,” public relations officer John Giffin said.

“He was quickly placed into the hearts and minds of all Australians through his courageous fightback from the horrible burns he suffered in Bali.”

Narelle Fraser, a member of Victoria Police for 27 years, will also be a guest speaker.

“Fifteen of those (years were) as a detective with squads including homicide, rape and missing persons, investigating some of the most serious criminal investigations in Victoria,” Mr Giffin said.

“In 2012 she was diagnosed with PTSD and had to learn about resilience, which helped her overcome many adversities and accept her vulnerabilities, unexpectedly opening up a whole new world.”

With the inspiring talks and an array of information on various mental health issues, Mr Shotton said the stalls would appeal to all patrons.

“If it gets people talking, or saying ‘hey, we need to go and have a beer together and talk about it’, then we will have achieved something,” Mr Shotton said.

“Sometimes you think you are the only one going through something. It’s tough going.”

Sweet sixteenth for Ag Art Probably one of the sassiest showcases at the Elmore Field Days, the Ag Art Wear competition is in its 16th year with some next-level unique ensembles set to be paraded down the runway.

The competition is distinctively rural, requiring designers to create wearable garments comprised entirely of agricultural materials found on farms.

The field days’ General Interest Committee chair Lorraine Trewick said the popular event was something that was enjoyed by spectators and participants alike.

“It’s the challenge of the competition that makes it, and to make wearable garments out of farm materials,” Mrs Trewick said.

Mrs Trewick was the founder of the Ag Art Wear competition after some inspiration on a trip to New Zealand in 2000.

“My husband and I went to a field days conference in New Zealand and saw it there, so when I came back I brought the idea to the committee.

“I’m very passionate about it, and to see how it’s grown has been amazing.”

Since 2001, the event has grown and so has the imagination of each of the designers.

From silage net wrap to flywire, the outfits require a lot of thought and finesse from the designers, who come from Victoria and interstate.

Mrs Trewick has seen some interesting materials in her time at the field days, however the most memorable material was the bones of sheep, cattle, pigs and chickens.

“They (the designer) boiled them up to make sure they were clean then sliced them finely and joined them together with wire — it looked like lace.”

As far as Mrs Trewick knows, the designers have no professional background in dressmaking and are simply very talented and imaginative.

“It’s incredible what they come up with,” she said.

“I don’t know what they’re doing this year as they don’t tell me beforehand, but it’s always good to get their designs and see what it is they’ve done.”

There are four categories in which contestants can enter: Avant Garde, Designer, 18 Years and Under and Hats.

The Hats category was only introduced in the past four years and Mrs Trewick said it was a way to generate interest and encourage people to get involved with a smaller garment.

Several regular competitors are busy sewing away at the moment, getting ready to defend their titles.

“A lot of the regulars enter one year and then say they won’t do it next year but they do — they love doing it and we love having them of course.”

Parades will run twice a day, at 11 am and 2 pm, in the auditorium and the finalists will be announced on the Thursday at 2 pm.

The top six designs from each category will qualify as finalists.

Spectacular sheep in focus The importance of sheep farming is a key focus of Elmore Field Days.

There are many sheep-related elements, including shearing demonstrations, information for farmers and an ongoing ewe trial.

“We have regular demonstrations on shearing. People just come and go as they want,” public relations officer John Giffin said.

“We also have advice for farmers on things like the ethical and safety side of transporting stock on trucks.

“We do a ewe trial, which has been going on for several years, and each year it tests several breeds of sheep.

“The trial compares the wool from them, the lambing rate, the money from the wool and the different breeds of lambs.”

Equestrian showcase a first at Elmore For the first time at Elmore Field Days, an equestrian showcase will delight visitors and it will all take place at the newly updated Elmore Equestrian Park.

The daily Equestrian Showcase will be held on the grassed arena, featuring events, demonstrations and pony rides.

Since the official opening of the indoor arena and stables last year, Elmore Equestrian Park has expanded its equestrian capabilities and established itself as a modern and userfriendly environment ideal for premier equine events.

Elmore Field Days public relations officer John Giffin said the interest in equestrian activities had grown since the upgrade, with the events calendar having triple the number of bookings.

“It’s full every weekend — that’s why we decided to hold the equestrian showcase this year,” Mr Giffin said.

“Next year, the park is also booked out a fair bit already.”

The $1.2 million project has not

only boosted interest in equestrian events in the area, but has also boosted the local economy.

“It’s helped the local community — all the local clubs can come here now and don’t have to travel to further places, like Werribee, and it’s helped the towns because more people are coming through.”

Mr Giffin said some riders had even travelled from as far as NSW and South Australia for various events held at the Elmore site, including polocrosse and dressage.

The Equestrian Showcase is set to delight young and old.

“HorseHand will be doing some entertainment and education sessions such as live communication and training demonstrations,” Mr Giffin said.

Feedback about the park has been positive so far with everyone impressed by the facilities, which include an architectural curved roof and portable stalls to house 100 horses.

“Everyone who has used it loves it.

They are quite surprised by the quality of facilities we have here, and once they come here we get comments that

they didn’t know the facility was here and they’ll definitely be coming back,” Mr Giffin said.

Upgrades to Elmore Equestrian Park have been progressive, with the renovations starting since 2007 when all the dressage arenas were built.

“Every year there’d be something new … whether it’s more stable complexes or arenas,” Mr Giffin said.

The Equestrian Showcase events will take place on the grassed arena over all three days. Access the arena via Gate 4 on 4th Avenue and Avonmore Drive.

No event is complete without music in the air, and at this year’s Elmore Field Days there will certainly not be any shortage of catchy tunes, guitar strumming and some impressive voices to go with them.

H ! itting the right notes At the tender age of 18, Laura Byrnes is an Academy of Country Music graduate and debuted her first selftitled EP in December last year.

The EP features co-writes with some of Australian country music’s finest including Alan Caswell, Drew McAlister and Brianna Lee. Growing up on the family farm at Nathalia, Laura has always had a passion for all things country, and with her background in classical singing and selftaught guitar lessons, she now identifies as a country music singer.

Laura already has an impressive résumé, having performed at the Tamworth Country Music Festival for the past three years, at the Numurkah Food Bowl Festival 2015, the Echuca Moama Country Music Festival 2015 and the Barmah Muster for the past three years. Her accolades include a top-10 finalist position for her song Weighed Down at the 2016 Songs Alive Australia Song Competition and a semi-final spot for Growing Up at the 2016 International Songwriting Competition.

Seasoned performer hits Elmore stage At the age of four, Kaitlyn Thomas was taking singing and dancing lessons; just four years later, she was already up in front of live audiences, writing her own songs and playing guitar.

From the car to the stage Many of us sing along to the music on the car radio daily, but for 21-year-old Bendigo solo artist Bentley Grattan, this habit eventually took him out of the car and onto the stage.

“After six years of travelling 35 minutes to and from school daily, I managed to notice that I was actually starting to hit a couple of notes,” Mr Grattan said.

“I slowly put more time and effort into pushing the boundaries with my voice and learning how to control it.”

Mr Grattan has played guitar since he was just eight years old after finding an old one hanging around the house, and has had some formal lessons.

At an open mic night in Bendigo, he met some people in the music industry and was

asked to perform at a festival.

It was there that he met an established performer from Bendigo, Steph Durden, who was looking for a guitarist and the pair performed as a duo for 18 months.

Mr Grattan performs a variety of acoustic covers from various genres including pop, RnB and pub classics.

While popular musician Ed Sheeran is one of his main inspirations, Mr Grattan credits musicians from Bendigo such as Jay Critcher, Ryan Gay and Steph Durden for helping him onto the scene and teaching him about performing live.

Mr Grattan performs regularly at pubs and has been asked to play at weddings and other private functions in Bendigo and surrounding towns.

When she was just nine years old, Kaitlyn was mentored by some of Australia’s country music greats such as Carter & Carter, Amber Lawrence, Beccy Cole, Allan Caswell and Luke O’Shea.

In 2013, Kaitlyn was crowned the Australian Songwriters Association Youth Songwriter of the Year and in 2012 and 2014 she won the Australian Children’s Music Foundation songwriter award.

In 2015, Kaitlyn competed in the popular singing competition The X Factor Australia.

Kaitlyn has performed at the Tamworth Country Music Festival several times as well as other local country music festivals.

On one of her trips to the United States to meet with agents and managers, Kaitlyn performed at the iconic Bluebird Café in Nashville — a dream come true for her — and participated with the Australian Team at the World

Championships of Performing Arts in Los Angeles, receiving three Silver, one Bronze and an overall Highly Commended industry award.

The general interest pavilion has stalls ranging from food to fashion items to other special interest stalls.

The idea was that women could find points of interest just for them, in addition to the usual crowd of male patrons, Mr Giffin said.

DIY home-project lovers will appreciate the gardening wares and the home décor items available.

For a culinary experience, peruse the range of teas, honey, olive oil, chocolate, beeswax, wine, homemade goods, lollies, fudge and herbs.

The special interest stalls range from retirement to health and travel.

The flavours and versatility of the Victorian food bowl will be on display at Elmore Field Days.

Often the best photographs of an event are taken from those experiencing it.

A large selection of produce can be found within a 100 km radius of Elmore, making the event a true indicator of the state’s produce offerings, according to event president Derek Shotton.

The three-day event features a variety of food exhibitors in the general interest pavilion, ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables to beverages and baked goods.

“As locals we forget how good we have it here,” Mr Shotton said.

“We have market garden produce, wheat, beef and lamb — a mix of everything.

“That’s a strength of Elmore Field Days. It is not like other field days which rely on one industry. We really cater to everyone.”

The food pavilion features wine, chocolate, herbs, preserves, homemade puddings and biscuits, honey, olive oil and more.

Delicious food aside, there is another element to the edible offerings at the event.

“What we are trying to target is the

females, as in the past a lot of males have come (to Elmore),” public relations officer John Giffin said.

“Women can come along with the kids and enjoy a whole pavilion dedicated to their interests. Food is part of that but there is jewellery and other wares on offer too.”

For this reason, Elmore Field Days is holding a photography competition. Prizes will be awarded and some select shots will be chosen to feature in an annual calendar.

Public relations officer John Giffin encouraged patrons to get snapping at the event and submit their shots to the competition.

“This is an interactive way for people to be involved. So many people take pics on their phone these days and these shots are great because they are taken from angles that others may not see,” Mr Giffin said.

There will be a $200 prize for the best black and white photograph and a $100 prize for the best action shot, while the best 12 photographs will be published in an annual calendar and earn their taker $20.

“We do a calendar each year using Elmore photos and we send them through to exhibitors, politicians and the media to showcase the previous field days,” Mr Giffin said.

“There are about 1000 calendars printed.”

Site set for another good year It is no easy feat to fit hundreds of exhibitors into a massive open space; in an orderly, practical and balanced manner.

Elmore Field Days volunteer Brian Mullane has risen to the challenge and made this happen.

Usually busy on his cropping farm south of Elmore, Brian Mullane also keeps his schedule full volunteering as the static display chairman for the field days.

Currently in his fourth year as a volunteer, Mr Mullane is in charge of mapping out the site and planning the layout — all the while managing some specific exhibitor requests.

“If something changes, that’s when I start deciding what changes we can get and what we can do with the site,” Mr Mullane said.

“Once we get the changes, we go through that list and I start deciding who we bring in and where we put them in.”

Every year, the exhibitor list is full to the brim, often with a small waiting list pending.

Although he could not pinpoint the exact number of hours the volunteer jobs take him off the farm, Mr Mullane said he was always happy to help.

“In this actual role, I don’t mind the actual mapping.

“Sometimes you wish you’d stayed home and done your farm work, but other times of the year it fits in really well.”

Mr Mullane’s involvement as a volunteer was instigated by his father who is an Elmore Field Days committee member.

“I just love machinery but the field days have always been good for the district. It brings people out, money from further afield into Elmore district and surrounds.”

Mr Mullane credited the administration team with assisting him with the mapping, and for his “main day” of business — pegging out the site — was grateful for about 50 other volunteers.

“It’s a big morning … I’ve got to make sure what’s on paper ends up on the ground and that it all fits.”

Setting out the site is a big job with a lot of people to co-ordinate, but Mr Mullane said it was a task that ran smoothly.

“As long as people hold the tape measure right,” he said with a laugh.

John Giffin.

At the age of 16, John Giffin volunteered at Elmore Field Days and he has continued to do so for the past 22 years.

“I got roped into it by a neighbour,” the cropping farmer said.

“I was helping out with the car parking — that’s how most people get started.”

Mr Giffin of Hunter — who is the current junior vice-president, public relations officer and chairman of waste management — has a variety of responsibilities on the Elmore Field Days Committee.

Other roles in his 22-year volunteer tenure have included treasurer, assistant treasurer and his six years in his initial role as carpark assistant.

Mr Giffin has chaired waste management for almost 10 years.

While it can be challenging to manage his farm work and field days activities, Mr Giffin loves being involved.

“In previous years, it’s been right in the middle of hay season, so it’s about juggling work at home and Elmore, and family too of course,” he said.

His role as a public relations officer and junior vice-president has seen Mr Giffin more heavily involved than in previous years.

“I’ve got an extra two meetings a month and other working bees,” he said. “(Volunteering) takes around four hours of my time a week on average, but it varies.”

Teamwork is one of the highlights of Mr Giffin’s volunteering role.

“I enjoy working with the blokes there and it’s putting money back into the community,” he said.

“Elmore brings the community together as a team.”

The 2016 Elmore Field Days are not yet over, but Mr Giffin said planning for 2017 was already under way.

“We have lots of people coming back to the site every year — sometimes we only see them at the field days,” Mr Jones said.

“Some who visit the site are from the area and will come back into the store.”

Ultimate Fasteners has a branch in Shepparton and one in Wodonga.

For the first time this year, Ultimate Fasteners will include something new at its display with about four representative companies on-site including SaintGobain, Milwaukee and Hoist Equipment & Lifting Products.

“They will be conducting demonstrations at each of the days to show people how stuff works,” Mr Jones said.

A limited number of exclusive ‘field day kits’ will also be available to purchase at the display.

While the store is renowned for the usual nuts and bolts, Mr Jones said the field days were an opportunity to showcase the extensive product range — from lifting chains and cutting discs to drills and transport equipment.

Ultimate Fasteners will co-display with Padman Stops again at this year’s Elmore Field Days, however the display is set to look a little different after a reviewed layout.

A time-saver for farmers set in a concrete structure making surface irrigation more water and labour-efficient.

Pipe end boxes and MaxiFlow 1200s will be among some of the popular products on display as well as the new and improved Padman Box Culvert 1000.

Mr Bartlett said interest in automated irrigation was increasing as it allowed farmers to gain some lifestyle time.

At last year’s Elmore Field Days, a special promotion saw Padman Stops sell about 570 electronic dual timers which automatically open and close bay outlets at pre-set times.

“Farmers can set the farm up and get a good night’s rest, and … set up the paddocks so they can do other jobs during the day … and go out for the weekend.

“Nearly every farmer we talk to, we have a conversation about automation these days — whether they use it or not.”

Padman Stops will be sharing a site with Ultimate Fasteners at site 999.

Efficiency gains are always at the forefront of farmers’ minds and Padman Stops is continually working to improve its products and technology.

“In the long run, they don’t have to spend long on the repairs and that has cost savings as well.”

Works program ensures a more reliable water supply Goulburn-Murray Water has completed a $10!million works program that will ensure a more reliable water supply for its customers.

A key part of this was desilting works on about 250 km of channels across all six irrigation districts during the winter shutdown.

G-MW customer operations general manager Scott Barber said the works would ensure better flow rates and return design capacity in channels.

“In our 2015 customer survey, we heard how important a reliable water supply was to our customers,” Mr Barber said.

“Almost half of the customers surveyed (46 per cent) told us this was their highest service expectation of G-MW. “It’s also something our water services committees have been advocating strongly for.”

On top of the desilting works, G-MW ran a weed control program on about 400 km of open channel, completed 45 km of rock armouring on channel banks, replaced 30 bridges, siphons and culverts

and remodelled 35 km of channel.

The program also included major upgrade works along the Stuart Murray Canal and at the Tullaroop Reservoir, along with the refurbishment of a spillway gate and the replacement of the gate hoist at Lake Buffalo.

“We know how important it is for our customers to get water when and where it’s needed and it’s why our maintenance programs are aimed at improving delivery,” he said.

G-MW interim managing director Neil Brennan said the water corporation would spend about $40 million on capital works during the 2016–17 financial year.

“These works are all about ensuring the best possible service for our customers,” Mr Brennan said.

During the past year, G-MW has also refurbished the Tea Garden Creek Weir to ensure service and water supply to diversion customers, repainted three spillway gates at Cairn Curran to extend their life and refurbished the bulkhead hoist at Lake Eildon.

Making smooth tracks

Tyres are an integral part of many agricultural vehicles and must be reliable, durable and adaptable for farmers.

At this year’s Elmore Field Days, Australian Tyre Traders will again be showcasing several high-quality tyres from its range which are engineered, designed and made specifically for Australian conditions.

ATT is one of the few companies that

designs its tyres here in Australia for the Australian market.

The Australian-owned, family-run business was established in 2001 to fill a large gap in the Australian market. Its research and development team boasts more than 500 years’ combined experience in tyres. It understands the needs of the Australian marketplace and has designed its tyres to suit.

“That’s what we pride ourselves on … being an Australian-owned company with tyres designed specifically for Australian customers,” sales and marketing coordinator Christopher Talia said.

“We believe in what we do and the impact that we make.”

Mr Talia and the team from ATT will be on site to provide valuable information to farmers about getting the most out of their tyres, how to increase tyre longevity and to ensure better performance in the fields.

One of the most important aspects of tyre longevity is understanding correct tyre pressures and the effect they can have on tyres, vehicles and application.

To help farmers get the most out of their tyres, the ATT team is available to provide farmers with advice tailored to

their specific needs.

ATT, one of Australia’s largest tyre wholesalers, specialises in light truck, truck, agricultural, industrial and OTR tyres and has three prominent brands: Harvest tyres for agricultural equipment, Haulmax tyres for truck and bus, and Halitrax tyres for the industrial and OTR market.

At the Elmore Field Days, ATT will be showcasing a number of its tyres from all three of its key brands (site 20).

Stockyards built to last Violet Town Rural is now manufacturing its own line of stockyard equipment under the VTR Stockyards brand.

These yards are made of Australian steel and are proudly Australian made.

Violet Town Rural spent 10 years selling other manufacturers’ products and was finding it difficult to get them to listen to customer feedback.

Manufacturers were creating the same old products and not moving forward with the times, so VTR decided it was time to take the next step and make its own line of products.

So far the business has made a full range of semi-permanent and permanent cattle yards, four different cattle ramps, six different cattle crushes, fully sheeted force tubs to remove the danger to the operator, and now a range of quality sheep yards, ramps and V-races.

The business’ aim is to make a premium product that is made from premium Australian steel that has the tensile strength and quality galvanising that the imported products tend to lack, all the while striving to keep the price as low as possible.

VTR also has a cheaper range available for hobby farmers or someone looking to put a cheap set on an out-block.

Its yards are designed so anyone can operate them, from older farmers to children.

VTR has all situations covered — from a small out-block set-up to fully automated and air-operated equipment.

The business has just completed a large cattle yard in the Snowy Mountains that is air-operated and all race gates, draft gates and crush can be operated by a simple push of a button.

VTR also sells and services sheep and cattle handlers and is a Victorian agent for Racewell Te Pari sheep and cattle handling equipment.

The Racewell sheep handler replaces the need for extra employees and allows the farmer to drench, vaccinate, backline, ear tag, capsule, foot pare and crutch, all on his own and all at the push of a button.

Boarding returns to Wesley College There is a new opportunity for rural students to seek education in Melbourne thanks to a new boarding facility at Wesley College’s Glen Waverley campus.

Learning in Residence is an innovative residential facility built adjacent to the college’s senior school.

Scheduled to open in Term 4, 2016, the exciting multipurpose senior years (Years 10 to 12) residential development provides a real-life context for holistic experiential learning.

The architectural design, location and programs enhance learning in the senior years and provide students — locally, nationally and internationally — with the benefits of an outstanding Wesley residential experience.

Learning in Residence is a dynamic and diverse community providing a vibrant and safe environment that will stimulate the intellectual, emotional, physical, social, cultural and spiritual development of the students in residence.

The residential program continues the strong, culturally-appropriate pastoral care model at Wesley College and provides comprehensive academic support systems.

Students have access to a communal dining space and the adjoining recreational areas. Students will have full access to the

campus recreational facilities including the sports centre, gymnasium, tennis, hockey and netball courts, sporting ovals and swimming pool.

Hay season looks grand This year’s hay season is set to be one of the best the region has experienced in years, which means now is the time for farmers to upgrade their hay-making machinery.

William Adams Ag in Shepparton has a wide range of hay-making machinery available to suit every need.

Territory manager Christian Barnett said after a fantastic winter and thanks to a fair bit of growth, he expected it to be the best hay season in the past five or 10 years.

“It’s going to make it reasonably important for farmers to upgrade their gear, hay contractors are going to be quite under the pump,” he said.

“We’ve had a lot of customers coming in getting some back-up gear, a second baler and adding products to their fleet just to make sure they keep up. There’s quite a lot of energy around the prospects of a good hay season.”

Mr Barnett said since the Shepparton branch opened about 18 months ago it had grown from two staff members to 10, and had expanded its areas of sales.

“We’ve probably brought focus onto some other products quite well, like hay machinery and cultivations, tillage and seeding equipment, where as when

“Now it’s sort of widened and we’re doing our fair share of sales and managing

it quite well.”

William Adams Ag will be back at the Elmore Field Days this year and Mr Barnett said there would be a range of products and machinery on display.

“And there’s always going to be some specials with a good interest rate and pricing,” he said.

Xenon range performs The Bendigo Tata car dealership was the largest selling Tata dealership in Australia last year.

Tata is an international automotive manufacturing company established in 1945.

Its range of Xenon vehicles is available at the successful Bendigo dealership and the Tata Seymour dealership.

Total Eden regional manager Andrew Chittick said the business was known throughout the Goulburn Valley as the combined businesses of Rob Rye Irrigation of Shepparton and Archards Irrigation of Cohuna.

The business has about 40 sites nationally, and will be exhibiting a range of its products at its display at Elmore.

“We’ll have a display and product information on the Otech centre pivots, and lateral move irrigators,” Mr Chittick said.

“We’ll also be featuring our monitoring automation and control system, which include remote scheduling software, movable field units, and our moveable end-of-bay sensor.”

Mr Chittick said Total Eden team members at the field days would be available to sit down with customers

and run them through the scheduling software and give them demonstrations on the field hardware.

“We’ll also be featuring a redesign of our screw-down riser outlets coupled with our slide doors,” Mr Chittick said.

“We’ve redesigned that to be more compatible with our automation and also the flap of door channel outlets.

“The redesign now allows us to have one field unit which is compatible with all types of flood irrigation outlets.”

Mr Chittick said the business’ local experience coupled with the rest of the Total Eden network meant it could cover any water infrastructure project, “that’s from flood irrigation to centre pivots and pressurised irrigation systems”.

Grain pools may be the way to go With low grain prices, grain pools are likely to get the attention of growers this harvest.

To meet that demand, AvantAgri Australia is using the Elmore Field Days to launch three new products in time for the coming harvest season.

AvantAgri was established by Peter Woods and Malcolm Bartholomaeus, and has been providing pool products to Australian grain growers for the past three seasons.

Initially it provided three products that gave market exposure for three, six and nine months after harvest. It also offered a range of payment options covering advance, monthly and deferred payments.

In 2015 AvantAgri introduced its traditional pool, which paid out 80 per cent of the estimated net return at harvest and 20 per cent in July. This proved to be popular thanks to its high cash flow up front and its inherent insulation against post-harvest price falls, while still remaining open to some upside.

This year AvantAgri is moving to give better service to the longer term postharvest market with its new AvantAgri managed pool, where downside price risk is actively managed while giving exposure to the upside well into the year following harvest.

If combined with an advance at

harvest, this product can deliver strong cash flow and higher returns if the market rallies strongly.

Some growers are happy to market their own grain but after several low production years might begin to look at maximising cash flow.

AvantAgri has developed its selfmanaged pool for these growers. Wheat, barley or canola can be transferred to AvantAgri with an advance of 60 per cent of the estimated value being paid within three days. The grower determines when sales are made.

“Pools force growers to accept the price and return selected by the pool manager.

Everyone gets the same result, but some growers might be happier with quicker returns, or need to hold out for better prices,” Mr Bartholomaeus said.

“The benefit of the AvantAgri product is that we handle all the storage fees and levies for you, find the best price when you want to sell, and can pay an advance against the grain in the meantime.”

The third product being launched by AvantAgri this year adds another layer of flexibility. The AvantAgri Flexi Pool gives the grower more flexibility with payment streams, who buys their grain, and can even cover a whole range of grains that might be stored on-farm, and not just in third party bulk storage facilities.

Shearing made easy Shearing is a laborious task by nature but a cleverly designed tool which has recently been upgraded could make farmers’ jobs a lot easier.

Developed by New Zealand farmer David Short, the Handypiece Pro, an upgrade of the original Handypiece design, is a portable and multifaceted shearing device that also takes care of clipping, dagging and crutching.

The power and versatility of the new model was launched at the Cheltenham Speed Shear competition last year by 16-time world champion shearer David Fagan, who managed to de-fleece a sheep in 23.9 seconds.

Being 100 g lighter, the Handypiece Pro has more power to burn than a standard handpiece and by using a powerful brushless motor technology, there is no more heat build-up.

The Handypiece Pro has the added feature of variable speed from 2400 to 3500 rpm.

Alpaca shearers will also be able to use a traditional handpiece that is slim to hold but now with the speed that they can reduce to the same as a clipper.

Dagging, crutching and cows’ tails operate well at about mid speed of 2700 rpm, while anyone wanting

to get a nice cut while shearing can wind it all of the way up to 3500 rpm.

With a new motor, the battery lasts even longer and makes it possible to crutch up to 3500 sheep from one charge.

Mr Short said a selected group of Handypiece customers had been trialling and comparing the new HP Pro for everyday use and the feedback was rewarding.

Customers were experiencing power as good as they would at a mains powered unit and found that trimming cows’ tails was quick and stress-free.

Innovation strikes again After taking out the Australian Machine of the Year award at last year’s Elmore Field Days, Jeff Townrow’s Quality Seed Grading Service will again be exhibiting its new and improved seed grader.

“The capacity of the machine is about 30 per cent quicker than our previous machines.”

The innovative seed grader is mounted on a rigid truck and has the capacity to grade up to 35 tonnes of wheat per hour with a fifth indent; an improvement on the rigid truck-mounted graders which grade up to 24 tonnes/hour.

Business manager Clay Townrow, who has recently switched roles with his dad Jeff Townrow, said he had received great feedback about the seed grader since last year.

“The capacity of the machine is about 30 per cent quicker than our previous machines,” Clay said.

Seed grading optimises a farmer’s sowing and cropping programs and can be seen as a long-term investment.

The business, which is owned and managed by third and fourth-generation McCullochs, last year celebrated its 70th year servicing Victoria’s hydraulic and pneumatic engineering needs.

Its Shepparton branch, on Numurkah Rd, opened 18 months ago and continues to grow.

Shepparton manager Greg Bennett said the branch, which specialises in hydraulic and pneumatic engineering repair sales and service, had gone from an original staff of four to seven after growing rapidly in recent months.

“We have established ourselves as a competitive hydraulics service provider,” Mr Bennett said.

“Mark brings to us a great experience in the hydraulic industry,” general manager Jeff McCulloch said.

“We purchased a lathe, a mill and the latest hydraulic diagnostic tools, which are all essential pieces of equipment, but they’re worthless without the knowledge and expertise that Mark and the rest of the guys bring to the operation.”

Milking equipment and solutions company DeLaval is helping take the guesswork out of body condition scoring with the release of the world’s first automatic Body Condition Scoring camera.

The camera provides great efficiencies and removes potential inaccuracies that come with visual and tactile scoring.

Body condition scoring provides a snapshot of a number of core data points that can assist the farmer with key decisions for the cow feeding through all stages of the lactation cycle.

Accurate body condition scoring can help plan feeding to ensure your cows have healthy body fat reserves, promoting milk production, reproductive efficiency and cow longevity.

The DeLaval BCS camera works by taking a 3D image of the back of every cow, every day.

Once the body condition score of each cow is calculated, the data is sent to the DeLaval DelPro farm manager where graphs of individual animals, groups or the entire herd can be viewed.

The farm manager can notify farmers if a cow has fallen below a certain score or if her BCS trend is outside the range.

DeLaval has adopted the BCS system to the one to 10 or one to five grade scale and has been developing algorithms that will be able to score different breeds.

Victorian farm technology goes global The future of irrigation is available right here in the Goulburn Valley and is going global.

A data-driven automation solution created by Rubicon Water is overhauling the irrigation industry, saving farmers time and resources while boosting their production.

FarmConnect uses analytics and predictive algorithms to deliver high-performance surface irrigation while also allowing farmers to manage their irrigation using their mobile phone.

It also records how much water is applied to each bay and links that with outputs to generate performance indicators such as tonnes produced per

megalitre of water applied.

Pilot projects have recently been installed in the United States, Spain, Italy and China.

All of the regions where the systems have been installed are facing similar water scarcity problems as we face here, with some a little more extreme — the system in China is located in Gansu Province, bordering the Gobi Desert.

“FarmConnect is now in demand internationally as other countries look to emulate the water savings and productivity improvements being achieved in northern Victoria,” FarmConnect general manager Peter Moller said.

“When farmers get a near on-demand high-flow water from their outlets they can then benefit from automating surface irrigation. The constant highflow application greatly improves

water use efficiency by reducing water loss and improving growth.

“Plus, the data the system helps farmers measure, analyse and improve performance. This level of data is going to be critical for farmers to remain competitive in the future.”

Flexibility a farmer’s best friend Kerin Engineering is a family-run business in Yeoval, NSW, which has been manufacturing farm equipment for 30 years.

Owner David Kerin comes from a farming background and recognised the need for units that would be versatile allyear-round.

The Kerin multi-purpose grouper/ feeders can be used to fill feed bins or combines, or for cab-controlled trail feeding, available in 48- and 60-bag capacity.

New models on show From stock proof to bulletproof Gordon Brown likes a fence that is stock proof when the power is down and bulletproof when it is electrified.

This is the reason the farmer from Shelford, 40 km west of Geelong, chose a Westonfence.

Mr Brown took over managing Shelburn in 2012 and began creating a self-replacing flock from Border LeicesterMerino first-cross ewes.

“Once livestock work out a way to escape, they never forget, so my plan is to never allow them to learn bad habits but to have good control from the start, rather than trying to beat bad habits after they have already begun,” Mr Brown said.

The eight-wire earth return fence has four hot and four earth wires. There are maxi posts every 10 m with three Westonfence insulated suspension posts in between.

The well-constructed fences, which Mr Brown put up in his first year of ownership in 2012, need “next to no maintenance,” just slight attention where

they integrate with the stand-off wires.

“And we never get shorts on them, unless a tree branch falls directly on it,” Mr Brown said.

Mr Brown has not had any trouble with the Westonfence insulated suspension posts moving over time.

“I had trouble with kangaroos, but they never damage the Westonfence. Those clips are an excellent design and really do a good job of holding the posts in place,” he said.

Mr Brown said the fencing — including the i Series with remote monitoring powering the Westonfence — has had an excellent impact on the day-to-day management of the property.

“It’s made life easier. My fault-finding time is very minimal,” he said.

Efficiency and suitability are two of the most important criteria when farmers are updating their machinery collections, and there is plenty to consider at the Elmore Field Days with exhibitors showcasing some of the latest agricultural technology.

The 525–60 Agri Compact Loadall and the 4000 Series Fastrac, recently introduced to the JCB Construction Equipment Australia range, are ready to be put to the test by farmers and can be inspected at the Michaels of Donald site.

While it is compact enough to access older farm buildings with doorways less than 2 m wide, the 525–60 Agri Loadall has greater reach capabilities — usually only found on larger telescopic handlers.

“The 6 m lift height makes it very versatile and well-suited to tasks like stacking bales,” JCB CEA’s Greg Sealey said.

With a 2500 kg lift capacity — and an improved loading performance of 800 kg at 3.3 m forward reach — the 525–60 Agri Loadall is perfect for small to mediumsized farming operations.

The machine offers optimum engine performance for demanding applications, with a wide core cooling package containing a hydraulic reversing fan to efficiently remove built-up debris from the cooling pack.

“The Loadall is equipped with a JCB Diesel by Kohler T4 Final engine, which produces 300 Nm of torque at just 1400 rpm, and doesn’t need costly DPF or DEF after-treatments,” Mr Sealey said.

The 4000 Series is more fuel-efficient, has a generous power supply with up to 235 hp and torque up to 950 Nm — 42 per cent more torque than previous Fastrac models — and features a new hydro-pneumatic self-levelling suspension available in standard and advanced options.

New model line-up New Holland’s recently released new T7 Series long wheelbase range of tractors will be on display at Elmore Field Days this year, and offer the next generation in farming excellence.

With a host of new inclusions, and complete with HI-eSCR Tier 4b engines, the T7 Series leads the way for best-in-class features and technology.

“The new range includes three model variations that will replace the two T7 LWB model variations previously available,” New Holland’s high horsepower product manager Don Forrester said.

“The T7 LWB extended family has rated powers spanning from 185 to 240 hp and the new line-up retains New Holland’s premium Sidewinder model versions, with Power Command and Auto Command transmissions.

“Added to the line-up is the new Classic model version, which includes a conventional styled armrest, and with

mechanical rear remote valves.”

As part of this new model line-up, new styling has been introduced that further enhances the T7’s stylish design, while retaining the practicality for which the T7 is renowned.

Included in the new look, the ‘cats-eye’style lighting has been made more compact to increase the size of the grill area, and three rear hood vents have been added to promote cooling airflow over the engine.

Projector-style headlights, and numerous work lights positioned around the tractor have also been added to increase total

visibility while working long days in the paddock.

Adding to the T7’s stylish line-up of features is the inclusion of the industryleading suspended horizon cab with its whisper-quiet comfort, and the uninterrupted views through the front windscreen’s new single glass panel design.

Removing the glass join provides improved front vision with no distortion.
