Elmore Field Days 2015 check list

All roads lead to Elmore For three days in October all roads lead to the Elmore Events Centre as more than 35 000 people flock to the Elmore Field Days.

Now in its 52nd year, the field days have evolved into one of the premier agricultural events in Australia.

Farmers, contractors and families have the dates firmly marked on their calendars as an event that showcases the latest in agricultural technology as well as farmrelated activity.

Largely organised by volunteers, the field days has a committee that comprises several generations of the district’s prominent farming families, dedicated to ensuring the event remains relevant to its original purpose — a comprehensive display of farming equipment and services.

Extensive development of the present site has seen millions of dollars spent on a multi-purpose pavilion, new amenities block and stable complex as well as areas for crop trials and machinery demonstrations.

beneficial to trade and emphasised information, education, demonstration and implementation of the latest technology, research and equipment.

The district’s community groups, schools and service clubs also contribute to the success of the field days by volunteering their time to assist the smooth running of the event.

Those groups are rewarded by profits from the field days being distributed back to them, which in turn benefits the wider community when those funds are then spent on local projects.

Field days secretary Sam Shotton said the field days committee partnered with Campaspe district businesses throughout the year and endeavoured to utilise their knowledge during construction projects and general organisation in the lead-up to the annual expo.

Ms Shotton said the success of the field days was supported by the array of general exhibitions and demonstrations, which ensured there was something of interest for the entire family.

The 2015 Elmore Field Days will be held from Tuesday to Thursday, October 6 to 8, at the Elmore Events Centre.

LOCATION

The field days are held at the Elmore Events Centre adjoining the Midland Hwy about 2 km east of the Elmore township.

HOURS

The field days site opens each morning at 8.30 am and gates close at 5 pm.

CAR PARKING

Unlimited free parking is provided adjacent to the entry gates on both sides of the field days site.

Disabled parking is available at Gate 2 and Gate 11.

ENTRY COSTS

The entry charge is $18 for adults and $8 for secondary students, GST included. Children under 12 are free. No concessions. Companion Cards accepted.

DOGS

Dogs are not permitted on site, with the exception of assistance dogs.

SITE SERVICES

Bendigo Bank ATM machines together with the Parenting Centre and St John First Aid facilities are provided adjacent to the administration office.

Mobility scooter and wheelchair hire is available on the east and west side of the field days site.

PURCHASES

The field days provide a parcel pick-up service for equipment items up to 50 kg purchased from exhibitor sites, which are delivered to depots adjacent to the entry gates for collection. A nominal $2 charge is donated to local community groups.

ACCOMMODATION

Hotel and motel accommodation can be found in the nearby regional centres of Bendigo, Echuca-Moama and Shepparton.

FOOD AND DRINK

Local community organisations provide an extensive choice of catering options on site, along with a number of speciality food vendors during the event.

A public bar also operates on the site each day.

AIRCRAFT

A marked grassed airstrip is available parallel to the Midland Hwy and east of the display area which measures 1000 m in length by 50 m in width.

Adequate aircraft parking space is also available.

Health on auditorium agenda Health issues will have a strong focus in the auditorium at the Elmore Field Days.

Three presentations about ongoing, serious health matters will include mental illness, men’s health and the ice epidemic.

The guest speakers come from different backgrounds and have acquired knowledge and insight on their respective topics in diverse ways.

Making men’s health a priority

McEwan talks on a personal level From the small country town of Lockington in northern Victoria to the small screen, Channel 10 reporter and presenter Brad McEwan has spent much of his energy updating audiences with the latest news in sport.

He has worked alongside Sandra Sully presenting on Sydney’s TEN News at Five, TEN Late News with Sports Tonight and on the national TEN Late News desk.

Mr McEwan attended the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa and in the same year, presented from Delhi with the TEN News Commonwealth Games team.

However at the 2015 Elmore Field Days, Mr McEwan will speak about a topic closer to home.

About 20 years ago, he lost his father and brother to suicide after their struggles with mental illness.

As an ambassador for beyondblue, Mr McEwan is determined to open up discussion and help remove

the stigma that is sometimes still associated with depression and anxiety.

“We must continue to address mental health issues and, most importantly, encourage people to talk about their mental health,” Mr McEwan said.

With about three million Australians living with mental illness and the Australian Government announcing earlier this year that it would work to develop a new national mental health plan, mental illness is an issue of growing importance.

Mr McEwan will talk about his family’s experience with mental illness and the impact it has had on his family.

Along with his sister and mother, Mr McEwan believes that his family members’ lives would have been spared with the support of an organisation like beyondblue.

“You might not see the scars but they’re there,” he said.

Since 2001, Peter Strange has worked at Bendigo Community Health Services as a men’s nurse practitioner.

Currently, he is employed in a role which includes health education, health promotion, population-based health assessment and sexual health screening.

Mr Strange works with a general practitioner who specialises in men’s health and in a medical practice located within the community health service.

Mr Strange consults as a men’s health nurse practitioner at three Bendigo Community Health Services sites, Headspace and Bendigo Regional Institute of TAFE. The men’s nurse practitioner is responsible for conducting health promotion clinics in the workplace and other venues, including places close to where farmers and men from rural areas can come together.

Mr Strange has also worked as associate charge nurse in accident and emergency at Bendigo Hospital and as a cardiac rehabilitation nurse at Castlemaine Hospital.

He is currently studying his Masters of Nursing Science (nurse practitioner).

With a wealth of knowledge and broad experience, Mr Strange’s presentation is sure to be highly informative and interesting.

Alcohol and drug addictions in focus

Narelle Stone back to share more Quirky Tales

Regional Victoria’s first alcohol and other drugs addictions nurse practitioner Cameron Cail will be a guest speaker at the Elmore Field Days.

Narelle Stone is returning to the 2015 Elmore Field Days and will entertain children with her story-time presentations.

Ms Stone, owner and operator of Quirky Tales, lives in Bendigo with her husband, two dogs and five chooks.

She has travelled to a number of places and presented many tales for children at libraries, kindergartens, primary schools and community groups throughout central and regional Victoria.

With a background in acting, Ms Stone looks forward to taking to the stage and keeping all of her little fans happy at this year’s Elmore Field Days.

The Bendigo Community Health Services’ professional has 10 years’ experience assisting those grappling with addiction and has been invited to Elmore to provide information about methamphetamine.

He will outline how the drug, commonly referred to as ice, affects users physically, why it is so addictive and how it impacts on social structures, employment and family relationships.

Mr Cail said he would briefly talk about other drugs but would focus on methamphetamine use given its recent extensive media exposure.

Footy clubs’ role in community explored AFL Goulburn Murray region general manager Martin Gleeson has been invited to speak at one of the informative sessions at Elmore Field Days.

Mr Gleeson said he would talk about the role of local football clubs in communities and their importance in offering a sporting and social outlet.

Football clubs brought the community

together, reduced social isolation, increased community pride and improved physical and mental health, Mr Gleeson said.

Last year the AFL partnered with La Trobe University to determine the value of a typical football club to its community.

Equestrian park officially opened Federal Treasurer Joe Hockey officially opened the new stable complex at Elmore Equestrian Park on August 1.

Fly in to field days Elmore is the only field days in Australia that has an on-site airstrip.

Veteran pilot Wayne Cowan, his brother Peter and son Andrew make up the three-member airstrip committee charged with ensuring the 1 km natural grass surface is operational.

Mr Cowan said almost 100 planes used the airstrip during the three-day event, ferrying in visitors, government officials and dignitaries from around Australia.

“The airstrip is used for training schools throughout the year, as well as emergency service planes, but the busiest period is during the field days,” Mr Cowan said.

He said the strip could accommodate twin-turboprop aircraft seating up to 10 people, and most planes parked for the day before flying out later in the afternoon.

“Elmore is the only field day in Australia where you can fly in, land and walk into the field day site. You don’t have to be driven to the gate,” Mr Cowan said.

With the event only days away, staff are busily preparing the airstrip, ensuring it is mowed, the wind socks are in good order and the cone markers are in place.

Mr Cowan lives close to the field days site but usually flies his own plane to and from the event.

“There’s so much traffic, I get home quicker if I fly,” he said.

The $1.2 million project, which also included a new amenities block, has cemented Elmore’s place as a safe userfriendly environment capable of hosting premier equine events.

Elmore Field Days secretary Sam Shotton said the undercover stable pavilion with portable stalls could accommodate about 100 horses and further expanded the equestrian capabilities of the site.

“We seriously underestimated the impact the stables would have on our bookings.

Our event calendar has tripled and from February to May next year there are only two weekends available for bookings,” Ms Shotton said.

Equestrian clubs from Bendigo, Echuca, Pyalong and as far afield as Horsham have regular events scheduled, making use of the facilities which also include an indoor arena, dressage arenas, day yards and camping area.

Ms Shotton said the new agribusiness pavilion, opened in 2011, was now available for indoor horse events and training.

“We open the pavilion every Wednesday night for training. It suits people who get home from work in the dark and want to

train, regardless of the weather, as well as those who may be competing in indoor events and want to practise inside,” Ms Shotton said.

The stable complex, with its impressive architectural curved roof, has portable stalls that can be removed, freeing up the space for other exhibitions and displays.

Funding for the project came from the Federal Government’s Infrastructure and Regional Development Department’s community development grants program and the Elmore Field Days committee.

Ms Shotton said the Elmore site was home to the Rich River Equestrian Club, a relatively small group that had contributed about $100 000 towards the facility’s development.

Work is now continuing on the next stage of the equestrian park, the expansion of a grassed area for large-scale competition.

The 7 ha parcel of land has been lasered and the irrigation system extended to establish turf and eventually support larger rings for showing.

Ms Shotton said the project should be completed by December 12.

Joyce calls it a day When Joyce Giffin took on the Elmore Field Days general interest coordinator role it took up just three hours of her week.

Now in her 17th year in the position, Mrs Giffin spends four-and-a-half days in the office at Elmore organising the extensive list of exhibitors in the general interest pavilion.

Mrs Giffin will retire in December having overseen the impressive growth of the area, as well as the introduction of the popular Ag Art Wear competition, which had 12 entries in the first year and now draws 50 creative pieces.

Encouraged to apply for the position by her fellow Campaspe CWA branch members, Mrs Giffin said she had thoroughly enjoyed her involvement with the field days and had met some interesting people.

“The general interest area is a very important part of the field days, it offers something for the whole family to look at,” Mrs Giffin said.

The organising starts with sending out letters of interest to the previous year’s exhibitors and filling any vacant sites as they crop up.

“It’s good to have new exhibitors, it keeps the area fresh and interesting for visitors who come year after year,” Mrs Giffin said.

Behind the scenes work for Mrs Giffin includes securing sponsorship for the Ag Art Wear competition and assisting with rehearsals of the models who wear the agricultural-inspired creations.

The co-ordinator’s role hasn’t left Mrs Giffin much time to pursue her own interest in sewing and craft, something she hopes to rectify once she’s retired.

And Mrs Giffin will continue to attend the field days, as a voluntary exhibitor in the CWA display instead of in an official capacity.

“I suppose my favourite part of the job is seeing when it’s all come together, when everything is set up. It’s the fruits of your labour on display, so to speak.”

Students learn volunteer value

A highlight of the Elmore Field Days program, the Ag Art Wear competition is now in its 15th year.

Colbinabbin Primary School students will learn the importance of volunteering when they help out at the Elmore Field Days.

Senior students, accompanied by staff and parents, will be stationed at the entrance gates handing out the official programs to visitors.

School principal Robyn MacLean said this was the first year the school had carried out this role, taking over from Drummartin Primary School.

Ms MacLean said volunteering was a practical way for students to consolidate their understanding of the school’s core values — respect, honesty, trust, understanding and co-operation.

The school has been involved with other aspects of the field days in the past, with volunteers assisting with catering and in turn raising much-needed funds to support the student enrolment of 36.

This year the field days are being held during school term and students are busily working on their entries for the Ag Art competition.

Ms MacLean said agricultural materials were being fashioned into hats for inclusion in the primary school section of the popular annual event and the school had planned an excursion to view their entries.

The fashion show with a difference stipulates entrants use agricultural materials to craft their unique designs.

In the past, bones, bullet casings, barbed wire, corrugated iron and silage net wrap have been woven into the striking designs, which are modelled by women and girls who live in the surrounding district.

General interest co-ordinator Joyce Giffin said this year’s event has attracted 50 entries competing for the coveted first prize in the four sections: avant garde, designer, 18-and-under and best hat.

“I never cease to be amazed by some of the materials that are used. No two entries are ever the same,” Mrs Giffin said.

She said designers drew on their own experiences or topical news issues for inspiration when planning their creations.

A panel of four judges scrutinise the outfits during the daily fashion parades, with the top six finalists in each category featuring in the final parade on the Thursday at 2 pm, prior to the winners being announced.

Ag Art Wear fashion parades will run twice daily in the auditorium marquee near the general interest pavilion.

Year 3 to 6 students from Elmore, Colbinabbin, Drummartin, Goornong and Elmore’s Our Lady of the Sacred Heart primary schools are busily preparing their creations.

Mrs Giffin said the students’ hats were subject to the same rules as the other entries and must be fashioned from farmrelated materials.

Prizes and encouragement awards will be handed out and all entries will be displayed in the general interest pavilion at the field days.

More to see at showcase The success of the inaugural showcase of locally produced wine and food at last year’s Elmore Field Days has encouraged new businesses to exhibit in 2015.

Originally the brainchild of ďŹ eld days president Frank Harney, the showcase offers a dedicated area for farmers to take their produce to the general public.

The Taste More at Elmore food and wine pavilion is a family friendly-area with undercover seating and adds yet another dimension to the entertainment provided at the three-day event.

Field days secretary Sam Shotton said the pavilion exhibition was sponsored by Temptation Living and Landscapes and Stride Events and included quality produce such as cheese, jam, salami, wine, olives and fruit.

New exhibitors include Kyabram camel farmers Chris and Megan Williams, who have recently expanded their range of camel milk products to include balm and body products, and Prickly Moses handcrafted beer from Barongarook in south-west Victoria. “The quality and diversity of produce is very impressive,� Ms Shotton said.

New technology on show Visitors to Elmore Field Days can expect to see the latest in agricultural technology and innovation.

Australian and international companies will launch new products and showcase state-of-the-art machinery at the three-day expo.

Goornong business G.E.Silos has been manufacturing smaller replicas of its signature silo range for six months and will have a selection on show at Elmore.

Managing director Jason Comer said the company’s development of the Mini G range, which has a capacity ranging from 60 kg up to one tonne, was in response to customer inquiry.

Mr Comer said the range suited hobby farmers, chook or dog breeders or property owners with a few horses or pet animals.

“The major advantage is that feed is protected from mice and other pests and the weather.

“They have a handle that is easy to

operate so people can fill their buckets and feed their animals,” Mr Comer said.

The new range of mini silos is available in kit form or fully assembled.

Another innovation, the Davimac tracked chaser bin, is Australian designed and built.

Easy to operate, the tracked chaser bin has increased flotation resulting in less compaction and wear and tear on farm paddocks.

Seed grader to sow more efficient results Jeff Townrow’s Quality Seed Grading Service will unveil a new and improved seed grader at the 2015 Elmore Field Days.

The innovative seed grader is mounted on a rigid truck and has the capacity to grade up to 35 tonnes of wheat per hour with a fifth indent; an improvement on the current rigid truck-mounted graders which grade up to 24 tonnes per hour. The new seed grader treats at a higher capacity and has a 50 per cent increase in screening area.

Employee Clay Townrow is looking forward to testing out the machine.

“The machine will be more efficient so you’ll be able to get more done in a day without compromising quality and accuracy.”

Seed grading is vital to sowing and cropping programs. The process serves to remove foreign seeds, dust, and small grains.

According to Jeff Townrow’s Quality Seed Grading Service, neglecting to grade seeds can lead to a reduction in crop germination and emergence.

He said tests and practical results

showed that professional seed grading led to a substantial increase in yield.

Mr Townrow expected the new seed grader would allow a more efficient season with the technology achieving improved screening and cleaning and more accurate application of multiple seed treatments.

The new machine is manufactured by Edmonds Engineering in Ballarat and is the second of its kind. He said preliminary testing had proven the increased efficiency of the new machine.

“The first machine came out last December … they (manufacturers) are always looking at refining the machines to improve efficiency,” Mr Townrow said.

In brief Parcel pick-up Visitors to the Elmore Field Days don’t have to carry their parcels all day or make numerous trips to their vehicles to store their shopping.

“When people buy something they can ask the stallholder to organise the parcel pick-up service,” field days secretary Sam Shotton said.

“The service costs $2 per parcel and people can collect all of their purchases from their parcel pick-up collection point at the end of the day.”

Ms Shotton said there would be parcel collection points at each public car park, adjacent to the entry gates.

Tractors on parade Lockington Heritage Centre will conduct a daily tractor parade at the Elmore Field Days from October 6 to 8.

The display will feature tractors which have been restored to their original condition, including a TE20 Massey Ferguson.

Prolific and profitable Novel genetics developed by the CSIRO, Meat and Livestock Australia and South Australian Research and Development Institute have raised the bar on what is possible in prime lamb production.

Other countries have had access to prolific genotypes that have enabled increases in efficient production. This possibility is now available to Australian producers in the form of the Multimeat.

These genetics enable producers to increase scanning percentages by 60 per cent in one cross.

That is, crossbreds produced by a Multimeat ram will scan 60 per cent higher than those produced by a Border or Composite ram.

The genetics have been evaluated across southern Australia in MLA-funded trials and return an increase in profitability of 25 per cent over normal crossbreds.

The management of these sheep is different to that of normal ewes and the development of a specific management system for them was funded by the MLA.

This year’s Elmore Field Days will be the first appearance of Total Eden after its merger with Rob Rye Irrigation and Archards Irrigation.

Total Eden regional manager Andrew Chittick said the recent merger was a rare occurrence in the industry.

“It’s a unique thing for the region and the industry; you’ve got established businesses in the market coming together which has never happened before,” Mr Chittick said.

“These companies are at the forefront of creating pipe-and-riser systems.”

Innovation-led, farmer-focused Duncan Ag has a range of new products for display at this year’s Elmore Field Days.

A continued focus on all-round farm solutions and smart design is at the forefront of a number of new product additions to the Duncan farm machinery range.

Duncan Ag general manager Craig McIsaac said his team was well aware of the increasing need for farmers to get as much value out of their machinery as possible.

Mr McIsaac said the newly added INO range, as well as Duncan Ag’s own drills and feed-out equipment, met the needs of Australian farmers.

“We like to think of ourselves as designers and providers of smart farming multitools — implements that deliver heaps of versatility as well as proven build quality,” Mr McIsaac said.

INO, an award-winning international company, was recently selected by Duncan Ag as the suppliers of precision seeders and mulcher mowers.

The INO Precision Seeder is a unique pneumatic seeding drill that operates on the basis of overpressure to ensure accurate seed delivery.

Mr McIsaac said the precision seeder had

proven well suited to the sowing of fodder beet, maize, cotton and soy bean with seeding regulated by ground-driven wheels.

The INO Mulcher Mower has a patented double spiral rotor that requires 24 per cent less power to drive the mower — giving considerable savings to operating costs while still achieving outstanding results.

Another recent addition to the Duncan stable is the TFD (The Farmer Drill).

The Farmer Drill features a 3 m sowing width machine on 125 mm row spacing, and also comes standard with radar, electric drive and an alternative spring tine to the conventional coil tine with new style boot and point.

Another new addition to the Duncan AgMech forage feed-out range is the Multi Plus, a versatile combination feeder wagon that feeds out round and square bales, and up to 3m3 of loose silage.

“Production systems on many large farms mean supplements will remain on the menu notwithstanding tighter budgets this season,” Mr McIsaac said.

“What we’re aiming to do with the likes of these new machines is make sure farmers have all the tools they need to manage and handle that feed quickly, efficiently and reliably.”

Tanks join the display at WB Hunter site Spray tanks manufactured

by Nathalia-based business Trans Tank International will be displayed at the WB Hunter site at Elmore Field Days.

TTI constructs rotationally moulded polyethylene tanks for a variety of applications including agricultural spraying, diesel transfer, firefighting and

dust suppression.

Marketing manager Ross Buchner said the Nathalia facility employed 30 staff and up until 12 months ago was recognised by its previous name Rapid Spray Southern.

Tank sizes range from 20 litres to 15 000 litres and are fitted with spray nozzles, hose reels, pumps and booms depending on their intended agricultural or industrial use.

WB Hunter rural sales manager Paul Neal said electric fencing equipment, animal health products, drenches and veterinary supplies and a large selection of hardware and tools would also be featured

on the site.

Agronomists, nutritionists and representatives of the various supply companies will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice.

Mr Neal said there would be some great specials on Coprice dog food, Lucky Layer pellets and hardware, while purchasers of 12.5 litre drums of Bomectin drench will receive a free pizza oven or chainsaw.

A home away from home Melbourne Grammar School offers boarding options for families considering an education away from home for their children.

Growing up with 11 siblings proved excellent training for Kahn Vocaleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entry to boarding at Melbourne Grammar School. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d been warned that I might get homesick but having grown up in a big family, being in the boarding house was really just like being at home,â&#x20AC;? Kahn said.

Originally from Kyabram, the Year 10 student joined the Melbourne Grammar School community last year. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My parents always had the idea to send my brothers, sisters and I to boarding school for our education,â&#x20AC;? Kahn said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;My older siblings have ďŹ nished school now and theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re living and working around the city, so my parents thought it would be good to try and ďŹ nd a school near the city,â&#x20AC;? Kahn said.

Since moving from his home, Kahn has settled in well in his new surroundings. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I remember coming to the school for the ďŹ rst time when I was in Year 8, I did a tour and I thought that the facilities were amazing,â&#x20AC;? he said.

The boarding precinct is located adjacent to the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s main campus,

opposite Melbourneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Royal Botanic Gardens and with ready access by public transport to Melbourneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s popular sporting and arts venues.

From the very beginning Kahn wasted no time in getting involved in extracurricular activities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;What is really great is that you can try so many different things,â&#x20AC;? Kahn said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I play footy, touch rugby and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m doing diving as well.â&#x20AC;?

Boarding staff, including heads of house, boarding tutors and the qualiďŹ ed nurses in the health centre, provide support to the students living away from home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like having several parents to help you out, especially the boarding house tutors, they make a massive difference to our experience. Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re always there to look after you,â&#x20AC;? Kahn said.

Kahn will be at the Melbourne Grammar site at the Elmore Field Days and said he was looking forward to catching up with friends and family at home. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s so good to get home during term breaks and long weekends,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You build up a bit of anticipation before you head home, because you realise nothing stays the same while youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been away. New Holland supports menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s health Agricultural machinery giant New Holland has teamed up with Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia to assist in the important ďŹ ght against prostate cancer.

The partnership will see New Holland and PCFA working together to raise awareness of prostate cancer, primarily in rural areas, where men are 20 per cent less likely to survive the disease than their metropolitan counterparts.

Overall prostate cancer accounts for 30 per cent of all non-skin cancer diagnoses in males each year with more than 20 000 men diagnosed, and sadly 3300 losing their battle.

One of the major challenges is the lack of knowledge among men and women about prostate cancer, with many current and potential sufferers having little understanding of this major health issue or awareness about the information and resources available.

PCFA chief executive ofďŹ cer Anthony Lowe said prostate cancer was the second most common cause of male cancer deaths and the fourth most common cause of male deaths overall. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fantastic to have the support of New Holland to help us not only raise awareness of this major male health issue but speciďŹ cally drive it in the regional communities,â&#x20AC;? Associate Professor Lowe said.

Together with PCFA, New Holland hopes to educate and inform men from across Australia about the resources and support available and New Holland will

promote the partnership by featuring the PCFA logo on all New Holland tractors purchased throughout its dealer network.

The partnership branding will also be featured on all marketing materials and at all major New Holland events across the country, including Elmore Field Days, in the hope of reminding and encouraging men to talk to their doctor about being tested as part of their annual health check.

All men over 50 years of age, or 40 years if they have a family history of prostate cancer, should be tested regularly.

New Isuzu on show Isuzu Australia Limited has released its intelligent new N Series range to the public with a boost to the impressive list of safety features, more power and a slick new look.

The new series will be available for inspection at Elmore Field Days at the site jointly operated by Taig Bros Shepparton and Poyser Trucks Bendigo.

Isuzu chief operating officer Phil Taylor said the new models offered a comprehensive transport solution for operators of light rigid trucks and the discerning tradesperson looking for performance and payload in a truck you could park in your driveway.

“From the breadth of range, classleading engine and driveline, through to improved cabin appointments, safety enhancements and our famous after-sales support, the new Isuzu N Series truly is the embodiment of the intelligent truck,” Mr Taylor said.

Safety is paramount and the Isuzu Electronic Stability Control system, which applies to all Isuzu NLR, NNR and NPR models, builds on an already commanding set of safety credentials within the range.

board technology to govern and rectify dangerous driving occurrences.

“On-board technology gathers data from sensors around the truck to detect and help correct an unexpected loss of control,” Mr Humphries said.

Under the cab, the NLR models retain the popular Isuzu 4JJ1 common rail three litre diesel engine producing 110 kW (150 PS) at 2800 rpm and 375 Nm at 1600 to 2800 rpm.

The NLR family also gets new badges, steering wheel, seat trim and a newly designed painted grille rounding out a fresh look and feel for a tried and tested workhorse.

The NNR models enjoy the same updates afforded to the NLR models and the MYY6 transmission ratio set for manual models has also been changed, with revised third and fourth gear ratios providing smoother changes and a smaller

gap between second and third gears.

The highly popular NPR models (4500 kg to 7500 kg GVM) have benefitted significantly from the 2015 update, with several models receiving a substantial upgrade in power and torque courtesy of the 190 PS (140 kW) rated 5.2 litre Isuzu 4HK1 engine.

CLAAS Arion 600 tractor on display CLAAS Harvest Centre Echuca will showcase its new tractor series at the Elmore Field Days.

With continuously variable transmission and cutting-edge on-board technology, CLAAS Harvest Centre Echuca said the new CLAAS Arion 600/500 C-MATIC was arguably the most advanced, efficient, versatile and comfortable mid-range tractor series available in Australia.

New C-MATIC configuration is available as an option across the entire Arion 600/500 series, which includes four six-cylinder models (158 to 184 horsepower) and three four-cylinder models (145 to 165 hp), and comes as standard on the Axion 900/800 series (205 to 410 hp).

CLAAS Harvest Centre Echuca sales manager Jake Olver said the new transmission was outstandingly efficient in delivering power to all four wheels and front and rear PTO at all engine speeds, in all conditions.

“It automatically maintains constant power across a range of ground speeds anywhere from 50 m/hour to 50 km/h,” Mr Olver said.

“Being able to transmit more of the engine’s power to the driveline means less power is lost and less fuel is consumed just driving itself.

“In addition, it has three driving modes — automatic, drive stick or manual — all of which can be activated on the move,” he said.

Arion 600/500 has been developed in accordance with the ‘CLAAS power systems’ philosophy.

“CPS aims to incorporate the world’s best technology with CLAAS’ own expertise in drive train management to deliver the best outcome possible in terms of performance, efficiency and reliability,” Mr Olver said.

“This concept covers everything from the engine and transmission, right through to the electronic engine management systems and hydraulics.

“Because CLAAS is not committed to using specific components or manufacturers, it is free to utilise whichever technology is best suited for particular applications,” he said.

The 6.8 litre six-cylinder or 4.5 litre four-cylinder engines feature four-valve technology, common rail fuel injection, variable geometry turbocharger and intercooling.

The Arion 600/500 is the only mid-range tractor that comes with an adjustable four-point cab suspension as standard.

Both engines incorporate diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology to meet the current Stage IIIb (Tier 4i) emission standards, eliminating the need for AdBlue.

With four-speed PTO, 8500 kg rear linkage lift and optional front-end loader and front linkages, ARION 600/500 offers a range of technology, comfort and user-friendliness normally only found in high-horsepower tractors.

“Their relatively long wheelbase yet short overall length and tight turning circle means they are extremely manoeuvrable for their size,” Mr Olver said.

“Likewise, the equal weight distribution over the front and rear axles ensures optimum stability and tractive power.”

Water co-op’s membership keeps growing In the past three years the co-op’s membership has grown from an original start-up of 50 members to more than 800 active-trading members.

Waterpool started trading allocation water through its unique Pooled Water Exchange and has since broadened its product range to provide water solutions to its growing membership base.

The development of Waterpool’s live online 24/7 Traderoom provides flexibility of trade for members which, coupled with electronic links to the Victorian Water Register, means a successfully matched trade can be transferred into buyers’ water accounts almost instantly.

Waterpool offers a variety of services including permanent entitlement trade, water leasing, water sale and lease back, forward allocation, carryover protection, seasonal allocation at weighted average price and water entitlement management services.

“The range of innovative products that Waterpool has introduced is very well accepted by our members and we continue to develop alternative solutions for our

membership base,” Waterpool chief executive Peter Lawford said.

Kyabram firm W&P Pumps and Dairy Services is a regular at Elmore Field Days showcasing a variety of pumps suitable for agricultural and business applications.

Established in King Lake in 1986 and relocating to the Goulburn Valley in 1996 the business services clients within a 200 km radius of Kyabram.

W&P Pumps and Dairy Services is a dealership for DAB, DAVEY, Lister Petter, Deutz, Smoothflo and Macquarie pumps, and imports a series of W&P pumps from China.

In addition most makes and models of pumps can be serviced and parts fabricated and/or machined in the workshop by qualified staff when not available.

Principal Rob Hosking said the rural property specialists exhibited in the main pavilion every year and fielded inquiries from people living within the area and those looking to relocate.

He said three of the four full-time sales staff were ex-farmers and together they had practical expertise to assist farmers in the market for dairy, cropping, horticultural, grazing and hobby farm land.

The business has also operated a water brokerage for five years, an area that is experiencing rapid growth.

“The water market changes on a daily basis and it can be very difficult to navigate. Brokers are dealing with that market every day so we can keep our clients well informed,” Mr Hosking said.

“Irrigation water is a very important part of the whole farm package.”

He said farmers were concerned at the rising costs of permanent and temporary water, and he encouraged visitors to the field days to call in for up-to-date information.

Mr Hosking and fellow principal Ken Oliver have linked their business with Ray White International in Sydney and have dealt with overseas investors.

Their property listings are mainly in northcentral and north-west Victoria although they do stretch as far as Warrnambool and Mt Hotham.

“We do get so many people stopping by to see us, we’re pretty much talked out by the end of the day.”

On-farm irrigation solutions Rubicon Water’s FarmConnect solutions continue to transform the management of surface irrigation and assist irrigators to increase productivity using the right amount of water.

Flexible options at Bendigo TAFE As the training needs of the modern farmer change, those working in the agricultural industry are looking for new study options to upskill and diversify their farming practices.

With young children at home and a large farm to manage with her husband in Pyramid Hill, traditional study options just weren’t an option for Nicole Myles.

“It’s just not practical for me to be doing classroom-based study,” Ms Myles said.

“I have already completed a Certificate III in Agriculture, but wanted to get a better understanding of what is going on around our farm and how best to fix it.”

Ms Myles was initially interested in conservation and land management; however, after marrying onto a farm, she developed a greater interest for agriculture and wanted to attain a formal qualification.

A flexibly delivered Diploma of Agriculture at Bendigo TAFE has given Ms Myles the opportunity to continue developing her passion for agronomy,

the study of soil management and crop production, and she believes the online components of the course suit her individual needs.

With staff only a phone call away, Ms Myles believes she has the necessary support to succeed in the course.

“It is good to know how to make improvements to the farm and to have transferrable skills if we ever have to leave the farm.”

When asked to offer advice to anyone considering agricultural studies, Ms Myles recommended simply getting out there and having a go.

“You don’t realise how much you can accomplish until you start doing it.”

International expertise to benefit Aussie farmers Australian dairy farmers will soon have access to a greater range of genetics products for their herd management processes, thanks to an international collaboration on Australian soil.

LIC International, based in New Zealand, is one of the oldest farming co-operatives in New Zealand and has led the way in some of the biggest innovations to provide today’s farmers with a competitive edge in herd improvement processes including the testing of milk quality, DNA technology and selection of elite sires.

CRV, based in the Netherlands, is one of the leading cattle improvement cooperatives.

The co-operative aims to react quickly to changing demands and offer innovative solutions to dairy and beef farmers all over the world. CRV focuses on delivering matching genetics on every breeding goal.

LIC has supplied Australian dairy farmers with New Zealand genetics for more than 15 years. The collaboration will see LIC’s Australian business distributing CRV’s global genetics products to Australian farmers as well as its own genetic offering.

Australia’s dairy industry has 6700 dairy farmers with 1.65 million cows.

LIC chief executive Wayne McNee said the collaboration with CRV would strengthen LIC’s proposition in Australia.

“The inclusion of genetics from CRV will allow us to cater to a wider range of farmers and grow the business in Australia,” Mr McNee said.

About 90 per cent of farmers operate some degree of a grass-based system, however the popularity of the larger, North American and European-style Holstein-Friesian cow had limited LIC’s ability to provide genetics to a larger proportion of Australian dairy farmers, Mr McNee said.

“Inclusion of genetics from CRV, combined with our portfolio of grazing genetics, will strengthen our proposition to Australian dairy farmers less focused on grass-based farming systems,” he said.

CRV Oceania managing director Angus Haslett said the collaboration would provide Australian dairy farmers with a range of genetics solutions while maintaining CRV’s strong reputation in the country.

LIC has distributed CRV genetics since August 17.

The LIC team is looking forward to meeting CRV clients at the Elmore Field Days at site 1003.

The business was in its infancy at the 2014 field days and joined forces with PFG Australia but this year will have its own site.

William Adams Ag territory manager Christian Barnett said the Shepparton facility was the first stand-alone agriculture branch opened by the William Adams network, which also has a presence in Horsham, Swan Hill, Wodonga and Traralgon in Victoria, and Launceston and Burnie in Tasmania.

From two staff members late last year the business has quickly grown to employ 10, establish an office and showroom, parts division and service department.
