Elmore Field Days 2014 check list LOCATION

The field days are held at Elmore Events Centre, adjoining Midland Hwy about 2 km east of the Elmore township.

HOURS

The field days site opens each morning at 8.30 am and the gates close at 5 pm.

CAR PARKING

Unlimited free parking is provided adjacent to the entry gates on both sides of the field days site. Disabled parking is available at Gate 2 and Gate 10.

ENTRY COSTS

The entry charge is $18 for adults and $8 for secondary students, GST included. Children under 12 are free. No concessions. Companion Cards accepted.

SITE SERVICES

Bendigo Bank ATM machines together with the Parenting Centre and St John First Aid facilities are provided next to the administration office.

DISABLED ACCESS

Mobility scooter and wheelchair hire is available on the east and west sides of the field days site.

PURCHASES

Elmore Field Days provides a parcel pickup service for equipment items up to 50 kg purchased from exhibitor sites, which are delivered to depots adjacent to the entry gates for collection. A nominal $2 charge is donated to community groups.

ACCOMMODATION

Hotel and motel accommodation can found in the nearby regional centers of Bendigo, Echuca/ Moama and Shepparton.

FOOD AND DRINK

Elmore community organisations provide an extensive choice of catering options on site, along with a number of specialty food vendors. A public bar also operates on the site each day.

AIRCRAFT

Getting water on and off pasture is a huge benefit for Nathan Shannon. It’s what experts say will achieve the greatest growing results for the pasture at his Naring dairy farm.

But, it wasn’t until Mr Shannon’s irrigation system was upgraded through Goulburn-Murray Water’s (GMW) Connections Project that he could irrigate this way.

Celebrity gardener at Adbri site Landscape designer and celebrity gardener Jason Hodges will be in attendance at Elmore Field Days.

Best known for his DIY segments on Better Homes and Gardens Jason will be at the Adbri Masonry stand on Tuesday, October 7.

He will give several demonstrations on how to correctly lay pavers and how to use Adbri’s retaining wall systems.

Adbri Masonry’s Victorian regional sales manager Sommerville Monotti said the firm was the largest manufacturer of concrete masonry products in Australia.

Manufacturing plants are scattered around the country including one in Bendigo.

Mr Monotti said Adbri had been exhibiting at Elmore Field Days for the past three years and the event always generated plenty of inquiry and follow-up work.

As well as gardening products Adbri Masonry also manufactures Turfgrid, a land stabilisation paver which is a simple solution for controlling soil erosion. The pavers have an agricultural application and can be used around cattle troughs.

Speakers are ready to entertain Talking all things AFL Two representatives of AFL Victoria will make presentations in the auditorium covering the topics of the value of a football club and the growth of female football.

AFL Victoria government partnerships and facilities manager Shayne Ward and competitions manager for women’s football and VFL academy coach Darren Flanigan will speak at 1 pm on Thursday, October 9.

Mr Flanigan said there was often discussion about the value football brings to communities.

“These values range from bringing a community together, reducing social isolation, increasing community pride, developing social capital and improving physical and mental health. Inherently we believe football does provide an important vehicle to achieving these outcomes, however up until now, there has been little concrete evidence about how, or the extent to which, football actually contributes to these areas,” Mr Flanigan said.

“This year our sport and LaTrobe University have partnered to determine the value of a typical community football club in terms of its contribution to social, community and health impacts.”

Narelle Stone — Quirky Tales

Victoria and played junior football at Katamatite before pursuing an AFL career with Geelong and St Kilda.

He joined AFL Victoria in March 1995 and has held various roles including establishing the AFL China Athlete Academy in Guangzhou, China. In 2013 Mr Flanigan took up the role of VFL academy coach and added the portfolio of Competitions Manager Women’s Football when AFL Victoria took over the management of the Victorian Women’s Football League.

Shayne Ward had a distinguished playing career in country football after having spent time on Footscray’s list in the early 1990s.

Now AFL Victoria’s manager of government partnerships and facilities he oversees the organisation’s government related partnership programs with a focus on facility planning and development in country Victoria.

The field days presentation will touch on other aspects of AFL Victoria and the sport, including the incredible growth of female football, and the pathways that have been developed to support that growth.

Narelle Stone is one of Victoria’s favourite librarians and an amateur actor who delights in entertaining children. Narelle has owned and operated her story-time business Quirky Tales for the past five years. Narelle lives in Bendigo with her husband, two dogs and six chooks and has presented story-times for libraries, kindergartens, primary schools and community groups throughout regional Victoria.

Superintendent Craig Gillard — Victoria Police Livestock and Farm Crime Specialists Group Most people involved in agriculture and rural communities are aware the theft of livestock and, more recently, tractors and farm machinery has been rising in Victoria.

Superintendent Craig Gillard from Victoria Police Livestock and Farm Crime Specialists Group will make a special presentation on the issue.

The group has 44 agricultural liaison officers and has been operating since October 2011 in all rural police

divisions across Victoria. Its primary objective is to reduce livestock theft and farm crime in Victoria and apply improved investigation outcomes for the benefit of the farming community.

Supt Gillard’s presentation will have a strong focus on current policing initiatives to reduce the impact of theft, in particular on farm enterprises.

Victorian Water, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Peter Walsh will be at Elmore Field Days on each of the event’s three days.

Mr Walsh will assist with judging the exhibitor awards and plans to visit numerous sites to talk with Peter Walsh business owners and farmers.

The National Party MP will also join party colleagues in the National Party tent to meet with constituents.

“The Elmore Field Days are clearly marked on the calendars of farming communities in this region every year — and for good reason,” Mr Walsh said.

The Royal Flying Doctor Service will offer free oral health checks at Elmore Field Days.

Flying doctors at field days Children and adults attending Elmore Field Days will have the chance to explore the fuselage of a Royal Flying Doctor Service plane.

The RFDS will be at Elmore for the first time this year, bringing the replica plane fuselage fitted with medical and communications equipment — and providing free dental examinations and advice from a team of mobile dental care dentists.

RFDS Victoria’s Mobile Dental Care is part of the Flying Doctors’ program to bring more primary health care services to Victoria, which also includes mobile eye care, women’s GP services and a diabetes telehealth service, along with nonemergency patient transport.

As part of the oral health check-up, dentists from the mobile dental care program will provide advice and a basic assessment, which includes teeth, gums and general oral health. Information and advice about other RFDS programs will also be available.

Mobile Dental Care is currently running in the Wimmera and Mallee, with mobile eye care services running from Ouyen, diabetes telehealth from Mildura and rural women’s GP services in smaller communities in the Wimmera, Mallee and north east of the state.

RFDS Victoria chief executive Scott Chapman said the RFDS had identified

areas in Victoria where the provision of health specialists could make a real difference to community health.

“Mobile dental care is a great example of how our programs bring health services to communities that would otherwise have great difficulty accessing specialist or even basic primary health care,” Mr Chapman said.

“We have similar programs that bring optometrists, diabetes specialists and rural women’s GPs to rural communities.

“The Flying Doctors rely on the support of the community to deliver these programs and the field days are also a great chance to engage with our generous donors and supporters.”

Mobile Dental Care has been running since 2012, visiting community health centres, schools, aged-care facilities, hospitals and other community centres, with a mobile dental care vehicle and portable dental equipment.

“Mobile dental care is a great example of how our programs bring health services to communities that would otherwise have great difficulty accessing specialist or even basic primary health care.”

Million-dollar development at Elmore Construction is under way on Elmore Events Centre’s $1.1 million building expansion.

Projects administrator Sue Doyle said the new amenities block would be completed in time for this year’s Elmore Field Days and building of the new stable complex would get under way in early November.

Funding for the project has come from the Federal Government’s Infrastructure and Regional Development Department’s community development grants program and the field days committee.

The amenities block comprises male and female toilets and showers, plus facilities for disabled access. It is sited near the new agribusiness pavilion which is now in its fourth year of operation.

“We have more than 100 exhibitors in that pavilion, there is a lot more traffic in the area so the new amenities block is badly needed,” Ms Doyle said.

Swan Hill firm Swanbuild prefabricated the amenities block off-site and will have it ready for use by the opening of the field days on October 7.

The stable complex, with its impressive architectural curved roof, will house up to 100 horses.

Ms Doyle said the building would be multi-purpose as the stalls are portable and can be removed, freeing up the site for exhibitions and displays.

The stables will be constructed at the southern end of the events complex next to the Elmore equestrian park which already has outdoor horse yards and six permanent dressage arenas.

“Planning for the stables has been in the pipeline for some time. We believe we will be able to attract larger equestrian events where outdoor yards alone are not enough,” Ms Doyle said.

“Construction should be completed by Christmas in time for the dressage events

which are scheduled for early 2015.”

Swan Hill Engineering will build the shed and Champion Stables will fabricate the stalls.

There are also plans to establish a major eventing area near the existing equestrian facilities.

Ms Doyle said preliminary planning was under way to laser 7 ha of land, extend the irrigation system and establish turf to accommodate larger rings for equestrian events.

She expects the additional facilities will firmly cement Elmore’s place as a safe, user-friendly environment capable of hosting premier equine events.

“Planning for the stables has been in the pipeline for some time. We believe we will be able to attract larger equestrian events where outdoor yards alone are not enough,” Projects administrator Sue Doyle Aside from the field days and equestrian competitions, the Elmore centre is also used for numerous other activities.

The Elmore Summer Send Off Bachelor and Spinsters’ Ball attracts revellers each year for a weekend of entertainment and thousands of campers flock to the centre at Easter for the Seventh Day Adventist annual conference.

The Rotary Club of Rochester utilises classroom facilities and part of the bitumen car park to conduct its ROADEC driver education program.

Rotarian Graeme Nelson conducts the two-day sessions which include theory and practical sessions to teach young people to stay alive when driving on country roads.

Field days service is in the blood The Elmore Field Days are a family affair for committee president Frank Harney.

His father Walter was a foundation committee member and his mother Nancy was involved with the catering committee in the early days.

Fast forward to the next generation and Frank Harney’s three sons are actively involved in volunteering at working bees and setting up for the three-day event.

“I was born in 1963, the first year of the field days, so I’ve probably never missed one,” Mr Harney said.

Taking on the president’s role was a natural progression for him. Having joined the committee at age 18, he served as treasurer for eight years and as senior vicepresident for the past two years.

“I’ve pretty much done every job there is to do around here. I started out parking cars and then emptied rubbish bins, whatever needed to be done I did. I worked

my way up from there,” Mr Harney said.

As well as contributing countless volunteer hours to the field days committee, Mr Harney still finds time to run his diverse farming business on 800 ha with wheat, sheep, a piggery, oaten hay for export, contracting and, more recently, compost delivery and effluent management systems.

He believes the success of the field days over such a long period of time can be attributed to the camaraderie among committee members and fostering the social aspect of being involved.

“The present field day committee does comprise many sons of those original founding committee members. The town of Elmore is renowned for its volunteers and community efforts.”

Looking ahead, Mr Harney said it was vital the field days committee continued to welcome anyone who wished to be involved.

“It’s important we have new people with new ideas and that they feel welcome.”

Mrs Mustey said the CWA endeavoured to have something new on display each year so those who visited regularly could learn new skills.

It has since evolved to become a point of interest for all visitors to the event.

Hay bales turn pink for a good cause

New to Australia and on show at Elmore

Pink hay bales will dot landscapes across Australia as part of an initiative to promote women’s health in rural communities.

The first Agrifac Condor Endurance selfpropelled crop sprayer arrived in Australia in September and northern Victorian farmers will be among the first to see it at Elmore Field Days.

Agrifac, a Netherlands’ based company, markets their machines as being efficient, economic, ergonomic and ecologic and is exhibiting at Elmore for the first time.

International sales manager Steven Koop said higher crop yields were needed to feed the world hence Agrifac’s commitment to developing innovative machinery.

“This resulted in the new Agrifac Condor Endurance self-propelled crop sprayer with a high capacity and extreme endurance,” Mr Koop said.

The proven StabiloPlus chassis is the basis for the Condor Endurance. Different variable track widths make the sprayer suitable for a large range of crops and the 8000 litre tank makes it possible to work for longer periods, thus increasing efficiency. Equipped with a powerful engine, a strong round J-boom and the StabiloPlus chassis, it is possible to work at high speeds.

Packaging company Tapex has released a limited edition pink and black bale netwrap, with $18 of each roll of pink net sold going to the McGrath Foundation, to help fund McGrath Breast Care nurses in communities across Australia.

Tapex Agriculture general manager Phil Cameron said the company worked with international supplier Tama to develop the product for the pink project.

“Women have integral roles in the contracting and farming businesses that we work with but they seldom get the attention and recognition they deserve,” Mr Cameron said.

“We are also aware that rural women do not have the access to the health care and information that women in our towns and cities have.

“We wanted to do something to change this, and the pink bale wrap and net-wrap is our way of supporting breast cancer awareness.”

Australian packing company Tapex has joined forces with the McGrath Foundation to raise awareness of women’s health in rural areas.

It is hoped the pink bales will remind women to remain vigilant about breast cancer and to get regular checks.

Aussie debut for seeder Elmore Field Days will be the location for Duncan Ag’s Australian launch of the new AS 5000 air seeder.

Australian sales manager Anthony White said the new machine had a 5m sowing span with tyres able to be spaced at three different widths to suit a variety of applications.

“The machine is ideal for dairy farmers with larger paddocks, contractors and mixed farmers,” Mr White said.

He said it could cope with a wide range of seeds from fine Lucerne to ryegrass and larger cereals including oats and wheat.

“The main aim is to supply farmers with a machine that will ultimately boost their grass-growing capabilities,” Mr White said.

Bathurst farmer Wayne Hooper bought the first AS 5000 in Australia and has sown a mixture of brassica and oats on a neighbouring property.

He said the machine was extremely robust and had highly accurate seed monitoring.

The large seed and fertiliser bins hold 1000 litres each, which allow him to sow for longer periods between re-fills thus improving efficiency.

“But probably the best thing is that it folds down to three metres, which means I can travel on roads without an escort and get in and out of gateways easily,” Mr Hooper said.

Duncan Ag is a New Zealand-based company that has manufacturing capacity in Australia. The business has exhibited at Elmore for many years and will be available this year at site 1067.

300 volunteers feed the masses Providing food and drinks for the 40 000 Elmore Field Days visitors is an enormous task undertaken by a dedicated group of volunteers.

The catering committee co-ordinates 300 volunteers from 16 different organisations to produce and serve staggering quantities of pies, sandwiches, cakes and soft drinks.

The committee meets monthly from March until September and rosters volunteers to work from the Thursday before the field days until the Friday after.

Catering co-ordinator Christine McCormick said a great selection of food and drinks were sold at 11 different food courts dotted around the event venue.

In 2008 the committee trialled running its own coffee house. The experiment was a resounding success and has continued to grow so that this year there will be two dedicated coffee houses.

“We borrowed everything to set the first coffee house up. Grinders lent us a coffee machine and grinder and we even borrowed a kitchen sink and hot water service,” Mrs McCormick said.

were bought and fitted out as portable coffee houses.

Grants from Origin Energy LG, Viterra, Elmore summer send-off ball (Elmore charity ball committee), Shire of Campaspe, Elmore and District Machinery Field Days and DEPI and sponsorship from the Elmore, Lockington and Rochester Community Bank branches of the Bendigo Bank funded the works with considerable financial input from the catering committee.

“Our coffee houses are fully functional and this year we have changed our coffee to Brewhouse Coffee which is roasted in Bendigo,” Mrs McCormick said.

All funds raised are distributed among the 16 groups who form the catering committee, including: the Elmore PreSchool; Elmore Primary School; Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Primary School; Rochester Secondary College; Colbinabbin Primary School-Colbinabbin Group; Goornong Primary School; Lockington Consolidated School; Elmore Progress Association; Elmore Scout group; Elmore Senior citizens; Elmore swimming pool; Goornong swimming pool; Elmore Memorial Hall; Elmore Multipurpose Pavilion; Elmore and District Health Services; and the Athenaeum Hall.

litres a cow can produce when the reality is they are paid per kilogram of milk solids, and are charged a penalty from the dairy factories for excess water in the milk.

The average Holstein Friesian cow has a milk fat test of 4.42 per cent and a protein test of 3.60 per cent compared to the current average Australian Holstein Friesian cow of 3.80 per cent and 3.26 per cent respectively. Farmers should be breeding for components and then feeding for litres.

Every litre of milk a cow produces requires both feed and energy, and farmers

need to make sure that every litre they get out from their cows is the most profitable it can be. This does not happen by chance, and farmers have to ensure the genetics they put into their herds each year are going to deliver the animals they want to be milking in three years’ time.

There is another saying, “Breed the best, feed the best and hope for the best.” If farmers take control of the first two parts of that saying the third part will generally fall into place. If they are only doing one of the first two they will spend a lot of time in the third area, “hoping for the best”.

Fertility also plays an important part in a farm’s profitability. Because farmers make their money from putting milk into a vat, a dry cow in the paddock isn’t profitable, neither is a stale cow.

Livestock Improvement Co-operative cows on average have a 370-day calving interval, the shortest in the world and 37 days shorter than the average in Australia.

‘Family’ of solutions grows AWMA has been supplying high quality, automated and manual on-farm irrigation infrastructure for more than 15 years. It will showcase the latest additions to the i-Family range of irrigation management equipment at the Elmore Field Days.

Since winning the Telstra Technology and Innovation Award at the 2013 Elmore Field Days, the i-Riser and i-RiserPLUS have been enthusiastically adopted by the irrigation industry, with more than 2000 units now installed.

In response to feedback from irrigators, AWMA has expanded the product range, and the i-Family now has six members — with more to be released soon.

At this year’s Elmore Field Days AWMA will launch the latest additions to the i-Family range of irrigation management equipment: the i-Lifter, i-Valve and i-ValvePLUS. The i-RiserPLUS now protects many kilometres of on-farm pipelines from vacuum induced failure. Designers and installers are specifying an i-RiserPLUS every fifth Riser (300 m).

The i-RiserPLUS integrates air and high volume vacuum relief into the body of the riser offering excellent value for money along with pipeline protection. The newly released i-ValvePLUS has exactly the same air and vacuum protection, but in a dedicated valve housing that is used where

there is no need for a riser, such as a pump station or road crossing.

The i-Valve is a dedicated product that protects systems from damaging ‘hammer’ or ‘surge’ events in pipelines. If the pump inadvertently turns off during irrigation, long sections of suction pipe require protection from the destructive effects of tonnes of water impacting at the pump. In this situation, the i-Valve will discharge the excess water from the pipeline, effectively diffusing the energy and subsequent impact to the pipe and pump.

The i-Lifter extends the customised engineering solutions that created the popular i-Riser, to allow automation of bay outlets. The i-Lifter was released at the end of last irrigation season and has already seen hundreds installed. It can be easily retrofitted to all types of bay outlets and drop box pipe ends.

Like the i-Riser range, the i-Lifter can have fixed automation or be operated using the portable ‘Roving’ automation system. The i-Lifter has a dedicated automation head unit that allows easy

Busy season ahead The team at Echuca CIH Sales and Service are preparing for a huge hay and harvest season, as well as planning for the upcoming Elmore Field Days.

“We exhibited at Elmore Field Days in our first week of business in 1988, and will this year exhibit at our 27th consecutive field day,” dealer principal Darren Stephenson said.

In 2014, the company will have a full range of Case IH machinery, Horwood Bagshaw air seeders, Polaris Quad bikes, Hardi spraying equipment, Great Plains seeders and auto-steer guidance equipment on display over two large adjacent sites at Elmore Field Days.

Food and wine showcase Locally produced food and wine will be showcased at this year’s Elmore Field Days.

Committee president Frank Harney said northern Victoria’s diverse range of produce would create an impressive display.

He expected large number of visitors would be attracted to sample cheese, jam, salami, wine, olives and fruit.

“We have been floating the idea for several years. Northern Victoria has such a huge range of food and wine producers from fat lambs to dairy, piggeries and

boutique wines,” Mr Harney said.

Now known as the Taste More at Elmore food and wine pavilion, the former display shed has an undercover seating area and ample room for exhibitors.

Mr Harney expects the new attraction will be a great success and could potentially grow to be a separate event in its own right.

In order to exhibit in the food and wine pavilion producers must satisfy several criteria. They must produce the food or wine from their own land and offer tastings as well as sales at the field days.

Getting water on and off in a four-hour period is providing big benefits to Naring dairy farmer Nathan Shannon’s pasture.

Numurkah broadacre farmer Stuart Hodge now has a channel system that can deliver a 55 Ml/day flow rate.

Making vital water connections Irrigators who have had their systems modernised through Goulburn-Murray Water’s Connections Project are spruiking a host of benefits.

From increased flow rates to the more efficient use of water and time, farmers are reporting positive changes to their properties.

In Boort broadacre farmers Scott Anderson and Shane Verley are both experiencing benefits.

Mr Anderson’s 4 km of channels were replaced with a pipe-and-riser system that can be operated individually to flood irrigate bays.

“I used to have to constantly spray channels to get rid of weeds, I would have to fix any blow outs, so I would be working two to three bits of equipment before I even started watering,” Mr Anderson said.

“With this system I just go up and turn a key.”

Mr Verley has had three traditional water wheels removed and replaced with one outlet that delivers more water — faster.

“With the old wheel it would take three days to water a 10 ha paddock, now I can water 10 ha of lucerne in a day,” Mr Verley said.

Speed is another benefit for Numurkah broadacre farmer Stuart Hodge.

When his farm is completed, 21 wheels will be replaced with eight electronic outlets, with some located side-by-side to maximise flow rates.

One 400 ha parcel of land on the farm now has a channel system that can deliver a 55 Ml/day flow rate.

“When we used to irrigate this block we would use about 235 Ml of water, in the first autumn irrigation with the new system it will only take about 160 Ml . . .

It makes a lot of difference,” Mr Hodge said.

At Fraser Pogue’s Ardmona property it is water and labour efficiency that provides him with the biggest benefit.

Two wheels have been replaced with two automated meters, and 1.5 km of spur channel and 800 m on-farm channel were replaced with pipe.

Three centre pivots irrigate about 150 ha, a further 120 ha is sub-surface drip irrigation and the remaining is flood irrigated.

“The labour efficiencies with the new systems mean that we can now pretty much irrigate our entire farm through summer, which would have been almost impossible with our old flood system,” Mr Pogue said.

Naring dairy farmer Nathan Shannon said the Connections Project had given him much greater control over his irrigation.

Four wheels were replaced with one automated gate and 2 km of spur channel was decommissioned.

“The biggest benefit for us is being able to put water on and get it off in four hours,” Mr Shannon said.

“I can irrigate twice as much per day and with the high flow rate I can get more again.”

G-MW’s Connections Project is connecting landowners to the backbone.

The water corporation is investing more than $2 billion from the state and federal governments to improve the delivery of water to irrigation businesses across the Goulburn-Murray irrigation district.

G-MW managing director Gavin Hanlon said the project was a “once-in-alifetime” opportunity to improve irrigation services and resize the corporation’s existing network to support the varied and exciting opportunities for irrigated agriculture across the region.

G-MW currently operates and maintains more than 6300 km of channel and about 24000 outlets and meters.

In 2018, when the Connections Project is complete, it is expected to operate about 3500 km of channels supplying water to about 12000 irrigation outlets.

The business sells all brands of lasers and equipment suited to the building, concreting, construction, earthmoving, civil and agricultural industries.

Owner Darren Montogomery said he worked within a 200 km radius to service, hire and repair all laser equipment, including Spectra Precision, Trimble, Leica, Topcon, UBEXi, Mikrofyn, Trimble GPS, guidance and precision agriculture solutions for all seasons, crops, terrains and vehicles.

Laser technology took off in Australia in the early to mid ’80s after people realised the benefits of flood irrigation of increased water savings and improved production in agriculture.

Mr Montogomery said the technology had since taken off into other industries.

“Since the early 1990s lasers have been used in the civil industries for roads, subdivisions, and dams. Builders, plasterers, plumbers and concreters in the construction industry also began using the technology,” he said.

Mr Montgomery said while those in the construction and earthmoving industries would usually purchase lasers, farmers would rather hire a laser grader for a once-off application rather than buy one.

The business hires laser buckets and blades for a variety of applications, including 7–8 ft blades ideal for small blocks, shed pads, tennis courts and bowling greens, and 10 ft laser bucket and blades ideal for regrades and 100 hpplus tractors.

Shepparton Lasers will have a wide range of lasers on display at Elmore Field Days, in addition to its GPS technology.

Lely’s robotic milking system has been installed in the University of Melbourne’s Dookie dairy. The technology will be on show at Elmore Field Days.

The University of Melbourne has installed the cutting edge technology at its Dookie campus. The new robotic dairy was commissioned in May 2014.

Lely dealer W & P Pumps and Dairy Services in Kyabram installed three Lely Astronaut A4 robots on the Dookie farm.

The Lely Astronaut robotic milking system allows dairy farmers to manage large herds on an individual cow basis in a way that can’t always be done with a conventionally milked herd. It features a state-of-the-art cow monitoring system, enabling farmers to monitor cow and herd performance, and act directly to improve farm results significantly.

The Dookie campus dairy has the capacity to milk 180 cows and incorporates environmental features including 118 solar panels, producing 30 kW of electricity, and waste-water recycling into settling ponds.

The Lely system is designed to improve animal health and wellbeing. It is built around the cow.

Dookie campus farm manager Bill O’Connor said it took most cows two to three days to get used to the new system.

“The cow is able to decide when she eats, gets milked, or lies down, thereby improving the wellbeing of the cow.

Dookie Campus now boasts cell count

levels of 60 000 which is fantastic for a transitional herd,” Mr O’Connor said.

The cows are free to return to the shed at any time and be milked. The system is feed driven and voluntary, therefore removing cow stress. The reduction of stress is due to minimal human interference and free cow traffic allowing for cows to flow accordingly to the hierarchy rules in the herd.

“The cows are very happy, they are less agitated which means that we have a smaller effluent system in comparison to a traditional system,” Mr O’Connor said.

The Lely T4C management system is vital to Dookie farms because they use all the data for research and production.

“They milk per quarter and we get the information out per quarter, the machine also weighs the cow every milking. There is a lot of technology in this system, it’s fantastic. The computer tells you if a cow hasn’t presented at the dairy for 12 hours so you can go and see what is happening,” Mr O’Connor said.

In turn, farmers enjoy a lighter workload and can choose when they want to be in the shed. Not only does Astronaut A4 automate milking, it automatically cleans out the milk lines and the robots three times a day, and automatically washes the vat after the milk is removed.

Haeusler’s Echuca branch manager Richard Jardine said the company also had a strong focus on ensuring the data created by the machinery and technology sold by Haeusler’s was accurate and easy to manage.

“Proper calibration of machinery and targeted training allows Haeusler’s customers to collect reliable and accurate data using their technology. They can then make better informed decisions because they can trust the

information being supplied. The use of the MyJohnDeere website allows our customers to share this data with third parties in a safe and secure manner,” Mr Jardine said.

“Having this information allows our customers to plan into the future and be more prepared for different situations because every customer’s business is different.”

At Elmore Field Days, there will be about 15 staff from the Shepparton and Echuca branches including integrated solutions specialist Scott Nichol.

Haeusler’s is known for its large marquees and machinery displays and took home the Best Large Site 2013 award at the Speed Field Days last year.

During Elmore Field Days, the Haeusler’s stand will be bigger than last year to showcase its large range of compact tractors including the M and R series and the new release 7R and 8R series tractors.

Haeusler’s will also include Goldacres sprayers and AgrowPlow seeders.

This year’s Elmore Field Days will be Rebecca Arnold’s ninth consecutive year gracing the Ag Art Wear catwalk. In 2006, she wore the winning garment, Black and White by Nola Wallis (above), which went on to win at the New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays.

Ag Art continues to turn heads Bones, bullet casings and barbed wire are among the wacky materials designers have used to create pieces of wearable art for Elmore Field Days Ag Art Wear competition for more than a decade.

In its 14th year, this unique fashion phenomenon has this year attracted 52 entries.

The competition showcases rural fashion designing skills, but with a twist — the materials must be of an agricultural nature as produced, used or found on a farm.

Bendigo’s Rebecca Arnold has modelled continuously for the event since 2006 and said it was her father who encouraged her to apply to be a model, after he saw an advertisement in the newspaper.

“I was in Year 8 at secondary school at the time, but I applied and got an interview, so we drove to Elmore for a practice session — I think it was held at the footy

club rooms,” Ms Arnold, 22, said.

Ms Arnold said the first garment she ever modelled was Black and White

by Nola Wallis, which won its section at Elmore and went on to win at New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays as well.

“That one was my favourite, it was pretty special,” Ms Arnold said.

“It is really interesting to see what the designers come up with each year; I have been doing it for so long that I’ve seen the event evolve.

“We used to wear garbage bags with string around it, and now we are wearing really complex designs.”

Ms Arnold said some of the more unique creations she had worn included a garment with a sheep skull, one with beading work made from sheep manure, and a full body suit crafted from rubber tyres.

“Back in the earlier days there were limited models, so we would each model about 12 garments for the competition — it was pure craziness backstage,” she said.

“Now there are more models, so we wear about five garments each, and we have

a dress rehearsal day; where the model dressers work out how everything goes on, for quick changes.”

General interest co-ordinator Joyce Giffin said the majority of the models were from Elmore and the surrounding district, and nearly 100 per cent of them returned each year to walk the runway for the Ag Art Wear competition.

“Most of them continue to model each year until a job requires them to leave the district, or they have to leave for university education,” Ms Giffin said.

The competition has four sections: avant garde, under-21, designer and hats.

Ms Giffin said the stranger materials she had seen in garments throughout the years included corrugated iron, fence palings, tree bark and sliced-up bones — which provided a lace effect.

“We have even had an entry with a skirt decorated with lambs’ tails,” Ms Giffin said.

Four judges scrutinise the outfits during each of the six parades, with the winners announced on the final day of the field days.

New to the judging panel this year is artist Linda Jackson, a former fashion designer who is inspired by the Australian landscape and has worked with fellow Australian fashion designer Jenny Kee. “For me it will be interesting to see what comes out of the Victorian landscape, and the work that some people put into costumes is fantastically interesting and quirky,” Ms Jackson said.

This year, the avant garde, designer and under-21 winners will receive a return flight plus accommodation, to the New Zealand Agricultural Fieldays in June 2015, plus a cash prize and a voucher.

The winner of the hat section will win a cash prize.

Ag Art Wear fashion parades will run twice daily at 11 am and 2 pm in the Auditorium Marquee near the General Interest Pavilion.

The final parade on Thursday at 2 pm will feature only the top six finalists on the catwalk, prior to the winners being announced.

Feeding easier with McIntosh bale feeder

Feeding cows on Poowong North dairyfarmer Ken Snell’s property has been made easier since he purchased the McIntosh trailed bale feeder.

“As soon as I saw it I knew it would work well. It is so strong and durable, but so easy to use and that really appeals to me,” Mr Snell said.

“Having the ability to hold the bales above the feeding cradle means that even with our roto cut bales, we are able to remove the plastic and net without having the silage fall everywhere.”

Its unique twin ram lift system gently places the bale into the cradle no matter what size or shape bale.

Rochester and Elmore District Health Service’s aged care facility residents will enjoy a bus tour of the Elmore Field Days site on Tuesday, October 7.

The health service’s activities coordinators Karen Tognolini and Janine Bubb organised the annual trip which allows the residents, many of whom have connections to the field days and agriculture in the region, to reminisce.

“Many of our residents are past members of the field days committee or have farmed themselves. They love to see how the field days has grown from its humble beginnings to the event it now is,” Ms Tognolini said.

“They are amazed at the modern machinery, compared to what they farmed with, and can’t believe the airconditioned comfort in the cabins.”

The bus tour is conducted early on the first day of the field days and slowly drives around the exhibits, occasionally stopping to chat with residents’ family members or friends.

“Visiting the field days helps our residents feel they are still a part of our community and that is so important,” Ms Tognolini said.

Planting the seeds for success A farmer only has so many hours in a day but Giltrap aims to make every minute count.

Peace of mind in the dairy Mastitis in dairy cows and subsequent production loss has been tackled with a new yet simple invention.

Inventor and manufacturer Paul Wallace said his background in physics and manufacturing teat liners in New Zealand enabled him to see how their usual design affected teat health.

His solution was an insert that fitted between the teat cup and liner.

The insert reduces the air between the cup and liner and makes the squeeze and release air cycle gentler on teats.

Mr Wallace said as an added bonus, the inserts protected teat ends from accumulation of blood and lymph and from lateral forces that cause tissue damage from the liner ballooning in the liner cup (shell).

SurePulse has been sold in Australia for five years and Mr Wallace said the success rate was 99.8 per cent.

“The cows are calmer, they milk out cleaner, and the teat health improved dramatically. In the second year the bulk somatic cell count dropped significantly,”

dairy farmer Steve Ackerley from Simpson in Victoria said.

“With SurePulse our whole programme is stabilised.”

The new system has also saved farmers such as dairy farmer Darren Vickers from Terang in Victoria from culling.

“The teat condition improved significantly within a month of installing SurePulse. For five years it has worked well. We have cows up to 10 and 12 years old,” Mr Vickers said.

“Seldom do we cull for animal health reasons.”

Mr Wallace said one farm in New Zealand had shown benefits since the installation of SurePulse in 2009; by 2013 the cell count reduced 175 000 points.

This cell count reduction saved the farm more than $51 000 the next financial year in milk, treatment and culling.

“Farm after farm after farm, the cell count is reduced,” Mr Wallace said.

“I see farmers in Victoria who have had it tough with the drought and this system can give them piece of mind.”

Family business on show McKee’s Garage in Elmore is a family business that has been serving the local grains industry since the 1950s.

The father and son duo, Bevan and Lee McKee, specialises in hay, cropping and harvest machinery and agriculture machinery repairs.

Bevan, who is 73, still oversees the business and works in the repairs workshop every day.

The McKees will be at Elmore Field Days with their range of Agco products, Kelly disc chains and Jaden baler stackers, with the Gleaner header harvester S78 and S88 their main focus at the event.

The McKees said they were impressed with the machine’s outputs and had seen its harvesting capabilities first-hand on canola and wheat crops.

“Last year we had a demo

Gleaner header harvester and ran it on 15 farms during harvest,” Lee said.

“We had great success and a lot of farmers’ eyes were opened who used different machines.

We’ve had a local farmer buy one for this year’s harvest and he was a farmer who always bought a different product — so it changed his mind.”

Lee said the Gleaner header harvester featured a Tritura natural flow processor that increased capacity with less weight, accelerator roll technology, an industry-leading grain tank and unloading system and a seven-cylinder, twin turbocharged Sisu engine.

Kelly disc chain representatives will also be at the McKees’ site to show interested farmers how the disc chains operate.

Tyres designed for Australian farming conditions While most agricultural tyres available in Australia are designed for Asian markets, Harvest Tyres are designed and engineered in Australia. Why? To ensure they meet Australian farmers’ demands for a reliable tyre to stand up to the harsh Australian conditions.

The dry and abrasive Australian soil presents a unique set of problems and Australian Tyre Trader’s (ATT) research and development department set out to solve these problems, and Harvest Tyres was born.

Heading the ATT’s research and development team are Australian engineers Russell Kennedy and Ed Jensz, who have 80 years of combined experience in tyre design and manufacturing.

“We design our tyre in Australia for Australian conditions. We have our customers in mind throughout the entire research, design and manufacturing process,” Mr Kennedy said.

One farmer who has discovered the difference of Harvest Tyres is Geoff Collis. With 2913 ha to farm, including 1497 ha of wheat to sow every year, he could not afford to waste time and money replacing tyres on his tractors. Mr Collis had tried many well-known brands of tyres throughout 40 years farming at Collarenbri in NSW, but none had stood up to the test until he tried Harvest.

Two years after the fitment of Harvest Tyres, Mr Collis said he was satisfied with the result.

“I’ve had no troubles with the tyres; they are doing a good job and are coming into their third sowing season,” Mr Collis said.

“Pulling a 60 foot Flexi-Coil at around 10.5 km, I estimate the Harvest Tyres have done around 1400 to 1500 hours, and I am very pleased with them.”

Branch manager Dean Jones opened the Shepparton business in 2008 and said the business had become a onestop shop for the area’s fastener supply needs.

SQP Grain Merchants will be demonstrating a new online grain portal at this year’s Elmore Field Days.

All your harvest needs covered with SQP Grain SQP Grain’s dedicated team will have plenty to talk about with growers who visit the company’s exhibit at Elmore Field Days this year.

SQP Grain managing director Ben Fleay said merchants would be chatting to growers about the new upgrade at Emerald Grain’s nearby receival site, as well as shorter payment terms and SQP Grain’s new online portal, where growers can manage their grain.

“Our joint venture partner Emerald Grain recently announced a $3 million upgrade at its Elmore receival site to

improve turnaround times and grain quality. The response from growers has been really positive; anything that speeds up harvest time is a good thing,” Mr Fleay said.

He said SQP Grain had recently introduced shorter payment terms, which would give growers peace of mind when selling grain.

“We have cut the time growers wait for

payment from 21 days end-of-week to 14,” Mr Fleay said.

“It means we’re getting money into growers’ hands more quickly at harvest.”

He said most of SQP Grain’s merchants would be in attendance on the day to talk growers through individual marketing plans and demonstrate the new online portal.

“Merchants will be on hand to demonstrate how growers can easily find and compare SQP Grain prices, manage their contracts and view their storage and payment information all in one easy online location.”

He said merchants were also able to customise grain-marketing plans to suit growers’ individual needs.

“Our plans can be created based on preferred pricing periods, payment timing, preferred delivery window and harvest logistics,” Mr Fleay said.

“We have local people on the ground who know growers’ individual businesses to the core. We opened a site in Moama two years ago and have exhibited at Elmore for three years.”

Limited edition truck on show The limited edition Isuzu FSD 700-S will be on display at Elmore Field Days at the Isuzu stand staffed by Taig Bros, Shepparton and Poyser Trucks, Bendigo.

The new models were released to celebrate Isuzu’s achievement of 25 consecutive years of truck market leadership.

There are three new high power ‘S’ models in the medium duty F Series range, along with a special release of five value-added Limited Edition variants.

The S models comprise the FRD 600-S, FSD 700-S and FSD 850-S and all feature a higher horsepower 7.8 litre SiTEC Series III engine producing 191 kW at 2400 rpm and 761 Nm at 1450 – 2400 rpm (up 15 kW and 55 Nm from regular models).

The three new S models also offer a wider choice of transmissions and all feature rear Hendrickson HAS200 airbag suspension, making them ideal for

sensitive load applications or those wanting a more supple ride.

The FRD 600-S is rated at 11 000 kg GVM and 16 000 kg GCM and is available with either an Isuzu 6-speed manual transmission or an Allison LCT2500 fully automatic transmission.

FSD 700-S and FSD 850-S trucks have a GVM rating of 12 000 / 14 000 kg and GCM rating of 18 000 / 20 000 kg respectively, and offer buyers an even greater choice of transmissions.

Along with the proven Isuzu six-speed manual, buyers can also select from the versatile Isuzu second generation Automated Manual Transmission, or the Allison LCT2500 full automatic depending on the application.

Award-winning system is helping irrigators WiSA Irrigation was runner-up in the Irrigation Australia Expo’s ‘best new product’ awards this year. Its new automated arm for flood gates has been making life easier for farmers throughout northern Victoria.

WiSA Irrigation was also the winner of the Campaspe Murray Business Awards for manufacturing.

However, this hasn’t been an overnight success story. These accolades have been the result of many years’ hard work to develop a trusted and reliable automation system.

Graeme Wright has been making a difference to farmers’ lifestyles and profits with his WiSA irrigation system for 18 years. WiSA’s automated control system has helped to improve the operation and

efficiency of all types of irrigation systems, including pipe-and-riser, border-check, pivot, lateral drip and micro-sprinkler systems.

WiSA’s automated irrigation system means farmers have greater control and flexibility over their irrigation management. Real time data is collected through soil moisture probes and other sensors and sent from the WiSA field units back to a computer.
