For Year 10 student Ike Finlayson, joining Xavier College at the start of 2025 has already opened the door to experiences that are shaping the way he sees himself, his community and the wider world.
As a Xavier boarder from Albury, NSW, Ike has embraced the many opportunities available across the College, including his selection in the 2026 Global Leaders Program, a highly selective experience for just ten Year 10 and 11 students.
The Global Leaders Program combines history, politics, debate, leadership and global engagement. It asks students to consider one central question: what does it mean to be a young leader in 2026? Through seminars, preparation sessions, international travel and meetings with global figures, students are challenged to become the best version of themselves and to encourage those around them to do the same.
In 2026, students will travel through Rome, Brussels, Paris and London. The itinerary will include major historical and cultural sites, as well as meetings with senior members of the Catholic Church, ambassadors, academics, philanthropists and CEOs. Students will also visit partner Jesuit schools, attend classes and take part in debates with their peers.
For Ike, the opportunity reflects the advice he received before starting at Xavier.
“Everyone I have talked to before starting has said embrace everything that the school offers because it’s what makes the school so great,” Ike said.
He has already found great value in the pre-departure seminars led by Mr Will Stefano, Xavier’s Head of Debating and Public Speaking and Global Leaders Program Leader. These sessions have explored topics including the European Union, religious history, leadership theory and the skills students will use when debating with Jesuit peers overseas.
“The seminars that Mr Stefano takes time out of his day to run are so informative and will make the trip so much better and more meaningful,” Ike said.
Mr Stefano said Ike was selected from a highly competitive group because of his maturity, curiosity and willingness to challenge himself.
“Ike is a highly mature, intelligent and engaged student who has a natural curiosity to learn and be the best version of himself,”
Mr Stefano said. “Out of a highly selective pool, he stood out not only for his innate qualities, but also his clear recognition that
he has so much to learn and his desire to challenge himself through an experience such as the Global Leaders Program.”
For Ike, the 2026 tour will also mark his first time travelling overseas.
“I’m incredibly excited to travel overseas for the first time, and I couldn’t imagine sharing the experience with a better group of people,” he said.
Ike’s experience also highlights the strength of Xavier’s Boarding program.
He describes boarding as “one of the best things that has ever happened to me”, saying it has helped him “realise who I was and who I wanted to be”.
His favourite part is simple: “The people I get to share the great grounds with.”
For boarding students, Xavier offers a supportive home away from home while providing access to the full breadth of College life. Programs such as Global Leaders give students like Ike the chance to build confidence, form friendships, explore their interests and consider how they might contribute to the world beyond school.
Through the Global Leaders Program, Xavier students are encouraged to look outward, think deeply and act with purpose.

Paul Marshall has dedicated over a quarter of a century to Echuca Twin Rivers Specialist School, serving as principal for more than 10 years of his 27-year tenure.
His extensive experience in specialist education has shaped his commitment to creating an inclusive environment where every student can thrive.
“It has been a privilege to be part of such a caring and dedicated school community,” Mr Marshall said.
The school’s philosophy centres on individualised care and recognition of each student’s unique needs and abilities with a personalised approach to education and support.
“I believe every child deserves to feel safe, understood, and capable, and I work closely with our team to ensure that happens every day,” Mr Marshall said.
“What makes our school truly special is the way we celebrate every student as an individual.’’
The school culture prioritises celebrating achievements of all sizes, creating an environment where progress is acknowledged regardless of scale.
Community engagement forms a cornerstone of the school’s approach, with strong partnerships between families, staff and students.
Mr Marshall highlighted the collaborative nature of the school environment and its impact on student outcomes.
“Families, staff and students work together to create a positive environment where everyone feels connected,’’ he said.
“We value open communication and strong

partnerships with families, which helps us provide the best possible support for each student.”
The school employs a comprehensive support team that addresses multiple aspects of student development.
“We have a highly skilled wellbeing and allied health team who support our students,” Mr Marshall said.
“This includes a mental health practitioner, speech therapist, occupational therapist, and physiotherapist.
“Together with our teachers and education support staff, they ensure that each student’s academic, social, emotional and physical needs are supported.”
Behavioural support programs play a crucial role in student development at the school.
The Positive Behaviour Support program and Zones of Regulation framework provide structured approaches to emotional and behavioural learning.
“Our Positive Behaviour Support program focuses on teaching students the skills they need to succeed,”
Mr Marshall said.
“The Zones of Regulation help students understand their emotions and gives them practical strategies to manage how they are feeling.”
The curriculum extends beyond traditional academic subjects to include practical, hands-on learning experiences.
Students engage in cooking, gardening and creative projects, including movie-making to enhance their educational experience.
“A highlight of our program is our student-run café, which is open to the public,” Mr Marshall said.

“Students are involved in preparing food, serving customers and managing day-to-day operations.
“This is closely linked to our school garden, where students grow fresh produce used in the café.
Animal-assisted therapy features prominently in the school’s wellbeing approach through Willow, the school’s much-loved Sheepadoodle.
“Willow brings a sense of calm and joy to our environment and plays an important role in supporting student wellbeing,” Mr Marshall said.
The school’s physical infrastructure reflects its commitment to inclusive design and accessibility.
Facilities include specialised playground equipment and thoughtfully designed learning spaces that accommodate diverse needs.
“We are proud of the inclusive and thoughtfully designed spaces across our school,” Mr Marshall said.
“We are also excited to be starting the build of an indoor hydrotherapy pool, which will further support
our students’ physical development and wellbeing,” he said.
Mr Marshall encourages prospective families to visit the school to experience its environment first-hand. The school’s broader mission extends to community building and social inclusion.
Mr Marshall believes the school plays a vital role in creating understanding and acceptance within the wider community.
“We provide a place where students with additional needs can thrive, while also connecting with the broader community, through initiatives like our café, which welcomes the public,’’ he said.

A Supportive and Inclusive Learning Community at Echuca East Primary School.
Your public school.
ALL HERE 18-22 May 2026
At Echuca East Primary School, we are committed to creating a learning environment where every child feels valued, supported, and inspired to achieve their best. Regardless of a student’s background, abilities, or starting point, we provide a cohesive, inclusive, and challenging school community built on our core values of respect, responsibility, and resilience. We believe learning is a lifelong journey for both students and staff. Our school community takes pride in continually improving through reflection, innovation, and the pursuit of best practice. We celebrate achievements, encourage curiosity, and maintain a safe and supportive environment where everyone is encouraged to learn and grow. High expectations are set for all students, and we ensure they are supported academically, socially, and emotionally.
Strong partnerships between home and school are central to our success. We encourage families and the wider community to play an active role in each child’s learning journey. We aim to create a welcoming atmosphere where parents and carers feel comfortable engaging with classrooms and school activities, knowing that positive relationships between school and home lead to the best outcomes for students.
Students are encouraged to set personal goals, reflect on their progress, and take ownership of their learning.
Our teaching and learning programs are organised into four levels: Prep, Grades 1–2, Grades 3–4, and Grades 5–6. Staff work collaboratively within these teams to provide engaging learning experiences and targeted support for all students. Clear learning intentions and explicit teaching practices are evident in every classroom, helping students understand their goals and achieve success. Students also benefit from a wide range of specialist subjects, including Physical Education, Fitness, Visual Arts, Digi-Tech, Auslan, and Science. These programs provide opportunities to explore creativity, communication, technology, and healthy lifestyles while developing important skills beyond the classroom.
To further enrich learning, Echuca East Primary School offers extracurricular and enrichment opportunities including water fitness, sustainability programs, school camps, leadership activities, interschool sports, and extension programs. These experiences help students build confidence, teamwork, and independence.
Technology also plays an important role in learning, with a 1:1 iPad program supporting

students in Grades 1–6. Alongside this, we place strong importance on student wellbeing, online safety, and positive digital citizenship.
At Echuca East Primary School, we maintain high expectations for behaviour and positive relationships through our School Wide Positive
Behaviour Support framework, helping students demonstrate positive learning behaviours and live our school values every day.

Echuca College, where learning is personalised. School captain Samson Chadwick who has attended Echuca College since year 7 alongside students he also went to primary school with, said the school’s sense of community had shaped his experience. “Every day is fun…there are really friendly people at this school. You always know you’ll have at least one friend to talk to, whether that’s a teacher or just another person.”
Echuca College offers a comprehensive curriculum that is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in today’s ever-changing world. The college has a school wide instructional model that challenges students to connect, learn and reflect for future learning. Guided by the values of respect, resilience and inclusion the Echuca college community is an everchanging diverse community that welcomes and values all learners.
The college provides a wide range of learning opportunities from year 7 -12 in all curriculum areas so all learners can find their area of passion. School leader Jane Fish said the
broad subject selection gave students the opportunity to discover their passions.
“I found it very broad. We had lots of options and then as we go into year 12 they narrow down a little bit, but it’s nice to have so many options in the younger years because then you can find out your passions and go from there.” Fellow leader Chloe Portwine said the opportunity to fast-track a senior subject had been particularly beneficial. “It was really helpful because it gave you an idea of what to expect in year 12 but on a much larger scale. A very good opportunity to have because I know they don’t offer that everywhere.”
The college also places a strong focus on student wellbeing and developing positive authentic relationships with every student having access to their home group teacher who helps nurture their strengths and supports their learning goals. All students have an ‘about me’ profile which outlines their interests, learning strengths areas for growth.
School Captain Dave Lluz spoke highly of the support offered by teachers, particularly careers counsellor Lorelle Pearse. “What

really helps is our teachers and we’ve got a very good careers counsellor … I think that’s what stands out for our school honestly.”
Fellow school Captain Mia Arthurson echoed Dave’s praise for the teaching and careers staff. “Lorelle is amazing in the fact that she cares about every student, not just the people looking to go to university. I think most of our teachers do the same. They’re really trying to help… not always (wanting) them to get 100 per cent but they’re pushing them to do their best because they know everyone has different goals outside of school. Not everyone wants to go to university or do a course, but all the teachers are pushing you

to do your best so you can achieve what you’re looking to do outside of school.
Echuca College is set in a large rural campus. The College is well equipped for diverse learning and includes a large oval, gymnasium, squash courts, tennis, hockey and volleyball courts. We also have a commercial kitchen and large performing arts area where we provide VET hospitality and music to the regional VET Cluster. Echuca College is a connected learning community that grows through resilience, acceptance and opportunity. Echuca College, where learning is personal.

Education Week is a timely reminder that learning doesn’t begin at school - it begins long before a child walks through a classroom door. Research consistently shows that high quality early childhood education has a profound impact on children’s development.
At Shine Bright, kindergarten is seen as a critical stage of learning - not a stepping stone to be rushed through, but a powerful opportunity to nurture each child’s unique potential.
Shine Bright’s Chief of Education Belinda Schultz says that kindergarten is where children develop the foundations for lifelong learning.
“When children feel safe, supported and inspired, they are far more likely to engage deeply in learning, build resilience and develop a strong sense of who they are.
“Shine Bright kindergartens are guided by a commitment to high-quality education and care, with programs shaped by contemporary research and the Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework.
“We are committed to forming relationships with
families who play such a central role to their child’s learning. Children thrive when educators and families work together,” Belinda said.
Choosing an early education and care setting is one of the first education decisions a family makes. Open communication, community connection and a shared understanding of each child’s strengths and needs underpin the kindergarten experience and should form part of the decision regarding which kindergarten or long day care to choose.
“We encourage all parents and carers to attend Open Days to find a kindergarten or long day care that suits their child’s needs. All of Shine Bright’s 44 services have an Open Day on Wednesday 20 May that we hope you will embrace.
“When children are supported to shine in their early years, the benefits extend far beyond their early years learning - into schools, communities and their future lives,” Belinda said.
Visit the Shine Bright website to find a kindergarten or Long Day Care near you which you can visit on Open Day, 20 May, from 9.00am until 11.30am. (www.shinebright.org.au)
