THIS IS OUR STORY...
BE PART OF IT!
Welcome to Echuca Moama
On the banks of the mighty Murray River, Echuca Moama offers an unforgettable escape where the rhythm of the river sets the pace for your visit. Whether you’re seeking tranquility, adventure, or a taste of history, these vibrant river towns invite
you to explore rich heritage, pristine landscapes, and modern sophisticated indulgence. Leave the everyday behind and discover the freedom of connection to nature, culture, and adventure — all right here in Echuca Moama.
A sacred place for tens of thousands of years to the Yorta Yorta people, vital in the establishment of trade between the Australian states following European settlement, and a place that runs through the blood of so many Australians, the mighty Murray River is revered as one of our country’s most legendary natural icons.
Winding its path across 2,600km of the Victorian, New South Wales and South Australian landscape, the Murray is one of the longest navigable rivers in the world, the lifeblood of the surrounding agricultural industry, and a place of spirituality and connection for many who visit her waters.
YORTA YORTA COUNTRY
The Yorta Yorta people are the traditional owners and custodians of the land we now call Echuca Moama. The waters of ‘Dhungala’ (the Murray River) are sacred to the Yorta Yorta people, with many of their beliefs, traditions and stories extending from it.
The Barmah-Millewa forest is a place where large communities lived. The river and forest provided a year-round food source and resources for shelter, weapons, canoes and other equipment.
EUROPEAN SETTLEMENT
Echuca’s development is largely credited to ex-convict, Henry Hopwood, who crossed the Murray in 1853 and gained a licence to occupy a parcel of land near the Murray and Campaspe River junction. He operated a small punt across the river, and later a pontoon bridge, which catered for the increasing movement of livestock between Victoria and New South Wales.
Settlement began in Moama in 1845, and developed rapidly due to the livestock market. James Maiden established a punt across the river and the area became a thriving cattle market and crossing place.
In 1853, Captain William Randell became the first person to travel upstream on
a paddlesteamer from Goolwa, South Australia to Moama, arriving on the Mary Ann. The trip was the beginning of the boat building and riverboat trade era that saw the region flourish.
MUST DO
PORT OF ECHUCA WHARF AND MUSEUM
Trace the history of Echuca’s riverboat trade and shipbuilding industry at the Port of Echuca Wharf and Museum.
THE RIVERBOAT TRADE
The riverboat trade exploded in the 1860s, and by 1872 the Port of Echuca was clearing 240 boats annually. Echuca became the second largest port in Victoria and the largest inland port in Australia.
The riverboats were vital in opening up trade between the states, however were superseded by the expansion of the rail system in the late 1880s. A number of original paddlesteamers continue to operate in Echuca Moama today.
The region is home to the world’s largest operating paddlesteamer fleet, and the oldest operating wooden hulled paddlesteamer, the 1866 PS Adelaide.
PORT OF ECHUCA
The Port of Echuca is a living monument to the 1870s and the boom of the riverboat trade. Echuca was the third largest port in the country, outside Melbourne and Sydney, and the main ship building centre for the river transport industry.
At its peak, the 1865 wharf was over 300m long and supported eight red gum saw mills. It was made famous in the TV series All the Rivers Run. Today, it is a place where you can learn about the early pioneering days, view steam-powered exhibits, take a paddlesteamer cruise, and visit the surrounding historic shopfronts, pubs and cafes.
THE STORY CONTINUES…
Today, Echuca Moama is home to over 22,000 people and is a tourism favourite, welcoming over 1.5 million visitors each year. Alongside tourism, the region is famous for its agricultural industry, national parks and forests, wine regions, and emerging food scene. While our story will always begin and end with the river, there is so much more to explore, and we invite you to be part of that story.

WONDERLAND ON THE MURRAY
13 December 2025 – 9 March 2026
Step into a world of imagination this Summer with the Alice in Wonderland Sand Sculpture Trail — Wonderland on the Murray, a free and family-friendly outdoor art experience like no other.
Brought to life by Sandstorm Events, Australia’s leading large-scale sand sculpture creators, this enchanting trail will feature eight intricately crafted installations that reimagine Lewis Carroll’s timeless tale in sand. Follow Alice’s magical journey as she tumbles down the rabbit hole at the River Boat Dock, wanders through whimsical scenes in the Port of Echuca and Aquatic Reserve, and crosses the river to Moama for a grand finale at the Moama Soundshell.
This exciting project is designed to celebrate creativity, community, and storytelling across the twin towns.
Whether you’re young or young at heart, come explore, snap a few photos, and lose yourself in Wonderland—right here in Echuca Moama.
A free event for all ages, Wonderland on the Murray will run for 12 weeks, offering an immersive experience that invites visitors to follow Alice’s journey while exploring the beauty of Echuca Moama.

The Waranga Rail Trail stretches nearly 19km through the largest continuous Box-Ironbark forest in Australia, revealing a landscape rich with natural beauty, cultural significance and a fascinating past waiting to be discovered.

Kyabram Fauna Park’s Wild New Experiences
Kyabram Fauna Park is the newest zoo to join the Zoos Victoria family –a conservation organisation dedicated to fighting extinction and connecting people with wildlife.
Spread across 55 hectares, the Park is home to more than 300 native animals, including Koalas, Tasmanian Devils, Short-beaked Echidnas and Alpine Dingoes. It’s located just 30 minutes from Shepparton or Echuca, an hour from Bendigo, and a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Melbourne.
The moment you step through the gates, you’re immersed in a lush, animal-rich landscape. Start your day with a coffee at the recently refurbished café, complete with expanded outdoor seating and front-row views of the ever-curious meerkat mob.
The Park’s wide, winding paths lead through a range of animal habitats and offer sweeping views of the iconic 33 hectare wetlands.
Bird lovers can settle into the upgraded bird hide, where you’ll spot Great Egrets, Royal Spoonbills, Brolgas and Nankeen Night Herons, among the thousands of migratory and native birds that visit each year.
In a major win for families, Kyabram Fauna Park will soon unveil a brand-new splash park, opening October. Shaped like a broad-shelled turtle and designed to be just as fun in winter as it is in summer, the splash park combines zero-depth water play with dry elements like trampolines and interactive features.
Even when the water’s off, it doubles as a safe, all-season play area for energetic little explorers. The splash zone is just one part of a wider upgrade to the visitor experience. The Park has expanded its green spaces, sealing gravel paths for improved accessibility, and creating new animal habitats. A brand new view of the wetlands has also opened up, offering clearer views of the thriving ecosystem.
Animal lovers can get even closer with new behind-the-scenes encounters, now available with the Park’s Meerkats and Dingoes. These special experiences join existing favourites like meeting the Koalas, a hosted tour of the Reptile Habitat, and a close-up with Australia’s most dangerous bird – the Cassowary. All encounters are led by passionate keepers, offering insight into how they care for the animals every day.
The Park also houses a slice of local history. Wander through the Hazelman family cottage – a preserved four-room home featuring period furniture, memorabilia and photographs – and explore the adjacent ‘Transport Through Time’ display, including a blacksmith’s shop, buggies and antique machinery.
Children under 16 receive free admission on weekends, public holidays and school holidays as part of the Victorian Government’s Kids Go Free initiative, which also includes Melbourne Zoo, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Healesville Sanctuary.
