SPORTS EVENTS PROGRAM Spring 2018
On the 30th of May this year we launched our Sports Events program at the Cobram Barooga Golf Club to a packed out venue and announced a strategy to bring exciting events to town that would generate economic activity as well as provide great spectacles for our community. We declared that in year one we would target five multiday events with around 100 attendees to each that would result in an additional 1000 plus bed nights. We are very proud to now be able to share our early success and highlight some key events that we along with our partners have been able to secure for Cobram Barooga. Over the next six months there will be seven events that will bring more than 1300 people to the region and result in almost 4000 bed nights, almost four times our initial target. It is anticipated these events will generate over $1.1 m in economic impact through direct and indirect expenditure. This is well ahead of our target and reinforces our belief that the Cobram Barooga region, with our central location, excellent climate, great facilities and a community that is prepared to welcome and support events, is well placed to deliver a strong program of events into the future. Our early success however certainly wouldn’t have been achieved without the hard work of our volunteer committee and our program partners. It is the norm that now many of these events understand their value to regions and hosting fees are quite common. These initial events will cost CBBT around $40 000 to bring to Cobram Barooga however with every $1 of our expenditure generating around $28 we are sure you will agree that it is an excellent investment of funds.

CBBT is a community and volunteer led, membership based not-for-profit. These activities along with Oktoberfest and the River Beaches Festival are undertaken because we are passionate about wanting to support a strong community. Our membership is our greatest asset; not only in terms of forming a body that is a genuine representation of our business and tourism sectors, but also as the funds raised allow us to deliver programs such as the sports event program. I’d like to thank all of our current members for their support and encourage anyone else that is thinking of joining to do so. On behalf of our committee I would also like to thank our partners. Our Premier Partner, the Barooga Sporties Group have been a tremendous support in the development and coordination of this program. We would also like to acknowledge the support of the Moira and Berrigan Shire Council’s, Dutch Media and Sports Marketing Australia, and McPherson Media and the Cobram Courier, who have assisted in putting together this booklet. Finally thank you to our very hard working committee who have given up many hours to organise and host these and many other events. I hope you enjoy learning more about the events coming to town throughout this booklet and am already looking forward to announcing more over the next few months.

U19 CRICKET Over 65 players, staff and officials representing the Cricket Victoria Academy U19s Country and Metro Trial Series were based at Barooga from the 25th to the 27th of September this year. Traditionally co-ordinated by the Sporties Group, cricket Victoria have been bringing squads and teams to the area for many years. HP Academy Male head coach Jarrad Loughman said, “We really look forward to heading to Barooga each year for our pre-season trial series. We know that the grounds and facilities are always first class and that the support from a coordination level and the involvement of the local community, the Barooga cricket club inparticular means we will have a terrific experience.” Amongst the Academy’s coaches were former Victorian and Australian fast bowler Clint McKay and Greg Shipperd, a former Victoria head coach and current Head Coach of the Sydney Sixers. The Academy Teams Program places a strong emphasis on talent identification in match situations as well as forming a key part of the Academy’s player development and coaching. “The Barooga tour also includes a key ‘team focus’ segment and provides Academy coaches and

selectors a terrific opportunity to see the players in an unfamiliar and competitive environment over a period of three days,” said Mr Loughman. Michelle Stephens from the Barooga Cricket Club said the Club really enjoys the experience of assisting with the camps. “We usually look after the lunches, morning and afternoon teas for the players, coaches and support staff and enjoy the interaction as well as the opportunity to watch some up-and-coming stars early on in their cricketing careers,” said Ms Stephens. “And while it’s not a real motivator for our involvement, the catering does allow us to raise some funds which is a nice foot up to start off the season.” The visit by the Cricket Victoria squad sees around 120 visitors to the area, including players families and spectators and over the week this contributes well in-excess of $60 000 into the local economy through accommodation, eating out and visiting local attractions. Sporties group chief executive officer Bobby Brooks said, “The Sporties Group aims to ensure Cobram Barooga is a strong and vibrant community and our promotion and fostering of sport is a key element of that. The visit by Cricket Victoria and our partnership with Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism to bring more sports events to Cobram Barooga are examples of our commitment and investment in these areas.”

Accommodation at River Gums consists of eight Studio Apartments, three Deluxe Studio Apartments and five Executive Suites all with kitchenettes. The motel has a range of guest facilities including solar heated pool and guest laundry. Sports and Business events are an important part of their business, especially during the off-peak season. “We really appreciate and benefit from the sports events
that happen in Cobram Barooga. Our facilities are perfect for families and sports teams and we really notice the difference to our bookings when they are here. Events such as the Australian cricket championships and golf have basically booked out our whole venue,” said Mr Harvey. “When Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism launched their sports events program we didn’t hesitate to join as an accommodation partner. We’re really excited about the growing program of events and the aim to bring more activity here between May and October when traditionally things are a little quieter.” “We also know that for this to work, it really is going to need the support of businesses like ours, but as we heard Cobram Barooga has great sports facilities, a perfect climate and a strong history of supporting event organisers, so we’re confident this is a good investment.”

NSWPSSA CRICKET CARNIVAL
Between Tuesday 23rd and Friday the 26th of October over 400 players, officials and their families will arrive in Cobram Barooga from all over New South Wales for the Boys Primary Schools Cricket Championships. The estimated economic impact of the carnival based on Tourism Research Australia average spend of a sports tourist of $276 per person per day is around a half a million dollars. In a boost for the whole region, this carnival will use grounds in Barooga, Yarrawonga, Berrigan, Tocumwal and Finley for games. In a testament to the region, this is the second time in two years and the fourth time the NSW PSSA have brought carnivals to the area. Ann-Marie Miranda, chief executive officer NSW Catholic Primary Schools Sports Council and the carnival co-ordinator provided some insight as to what makes Cobram Barooga such as great place to bring events. “Terrific support and top-class facilities, the communities are fantastic, very accepting of visitors to the towns. Lots of motels, beautiful places to eat and great places to visit after the cricket. We’ve always enjoyed ourselves whenever we’ve come down here,” said Ms Miranda. Berrigan Shire council mayor, Cr. Matt Hannan acknowledged the benefits of sports events for the region, especially ones such as the school’s carnival. “Berrigan Shire Council recognises the fantastic impact

of events such as these and we’re especially excited about the New South Wales Primary Schools carnival as it’s being played right across the municipality and will bring significant benefits to all of those towns hosting games.” “We’re also excited to showcase our region to the participants and hope that they’ll become return visitors for holidays in the future.” “Partnering with Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism in developing the sports events program is a good fit for Council, it supports our strategic direction through the Economic and Industry Development Plan, our tourism strategy and specifically our sports tourism strategy.” “Return on investment rates of 8:1 are not uncommon targets for event hosting organisations, but less tangible gains around society, seasonality, the environment or indirect investment are also there to be leveraged.” “Our ability to attract and support these events is also attributed our investment in sports facilities, often in partnership with other levels of government an example being the $497 000 funding recently announced through the Stronger Communities Fund for the re-development of the netball and cricket facilities at the Tocumwal Recreation Reserve.” “While these projects mean our recreation reserves are provided at a standard that allows us to host these events, the legacy of great community facilities supporting community participation are really important benefits,” the mayor said.

ACA MASTERS TOUR
A host of former and current day domestic Australian cricketers will travel to Cobram Barooga from 25–26 October as part of the Australian Cricketers’ Association (ACA) Masters tour. The players will take on a representative team of local cricketers in an action-packed Twenty20 game under lights on Friday, October 26 at Barooga Recreation Reserve. The tour will also include coaching clinics, community visits, a corporate golf day and a function the night before the game. Entering its eleventh year, the Masters program has been developed by the ACA, the official representative body of past and present elite cricketers, with a focus on the promotion of cricket. The program brings communities together to raise funds for local cricket associations and identify local talent. ACA CEO Alistair Nicholson spoke about the importance of the Masters program. “The Masters will bring a great deal of knowledge and experience and hopefully we can help the development of a number of young and local cricketers,” Nicholson said. “The tour will provide a unique opportunity for local families to rub shoulders with champions of the game.” Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism chair Don Rudd said, “This event is a little different and more focussed on providing some fantastic opportunities for our local community than our other events which are more-so focussed on visitor attraction and sports tourism. When we looked at the chance for a young local player to benefit from a scholarship and a year of mentoring with an ex-Australian player and the proposed clinics in schools as well as the match itself which will provide the local clubs and associations with some fundraising opportunities, we knew we couldn’t say no.” Murray Valley Cricket Association administrator Anthony Holmes can’t wait for the arrival of the ACA team. “There will be so many positive outcomes from this weekend and we really want to acknowledge and thank CBBT for bringing this event to Cobram Barooga,” said Mr Holmes. “The experience of the T20 will be invaluable for our players, especially the younger players in the running for the scholarship, but also the opportunity for Cobram and Yarroweyah United and the Barooga Cricket Clubs to run functions and the school clinics involving both cricket NSW and cricket Victoria will promote cricket in the area.” “I also expect a great crowd from all over the region to come down to Barooga on the Friday night for what promises to be a really entertaining and fun evening.”

Proudly Cobram, local and family, Mentha’s Surf and Street supply is a local icon going back to 1960 when the little store first opened its doors right in the heart of Cobram. Greg Mentha saw the potential of Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism’s sports events program straight away and couldn’t wait to be involved. Living here our whole lives, we know how great the area and our sports facilities are and we also know the importance of being pro-active in bringing to people to town.”

“We signed up for the voucher book for the Australian Schools Cricket Championships in January 2018 and were really pleased that we did,” said Mr Mentha. “It ended up being one of our busiest weeks of the year. People just kept coming back. They loved the concept, the vouchers and discounts and they loved the shop. We had people come back three times while they were here and they told their friends and they came too.” “Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism’s sports event program is one of the most exciting initiatives I’ve seen in my time in business here and I can only encourage as many as possible to get involved and support it because as a business we really do need programs like these.”

WHEELCHAIR RUGBY
Wheelchair Sports NSW Country Classic — Wheelchair Rugby Scheduled for the 9th and 10th of February the Cobram Stadium will play host to the 2019 Country Classic, a competition between Victoria, NSW, ACT and Queensland. The two days of wheelchair rugby will see Paralympic Gold medalists competing and provide locals the opportunity to see some of the best wheel chair rugby players in the world go head to head. The event which will attract an additional 120 people to the region will translate into an economic benefit to the area of around $100 000. Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism chair Don Rudd said that while the economic impact is great the opportunity to see world class athletes playing one of the toughest games around is what he is most excited about. “We think this event will not only be a fantastic elite sports event for the area but will also provide a great inspiration to anybody who goes along for a look as to
what can be achieved with a positive attitude. Many of these athletes have amazing stories which we hope to share in the lead up to the event and we’d encourage as many people as possible to be a part of what will be a great few days,” said Mr Rudd.

This year will be the 15th Annual Masters Cricket Tournament to be held at Barooga from the 14th to the 17th of January. The Barooga Masters aims to re-affirm the enjoyment of the game of cricket with one’s peers who are considered to be in the twilight of their careers but for whom the love of the game burns brightly. The opportunity is presented for cricketers, 35 years and older, to continue their passion in a festival atmosphere whilst playing and fraternising with kindred spirits. The emphasis is on friendly competition in games on good quality rustic grounds and top-grade turf pitches in an environment than embraces fun and fellowship.
The carnival generally has been between 8 and 12 teams, travelling from all over Victoria and New South Wales. With over 200 players, families and friends here for the week-long tournament, the direct local spend from this event is expected to be in-excess of $150 000. Chief executive officer of the Barooga Sporties Group, and event co-ordinator, Bobby Brooks said, “We are really proud of the Barooga Masters tournament. It’s been one of our most enduring success stories, with many of the teams coming back every year for 10 years or more. It’s a great way to showcase Cobram Barooga and the Sporties Group and fantastic for the towns as we know that between games it’s very social and the players and their families love to go out and experience everything we have on offer”

Dartplayers Australia Australian Pro Tour Event
expected will attract over 250 visitors to the region.
Professional darts will be coming to Cobram Barooga in June this year when the Sporties Group in partnership with Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism (CBBT) host the Dartplayers Australia (DPA) Pro Tour. DPA are recognised as the premier darts league and promoter of tournaments in Australia. Affiliated with the International Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) that played to packed houses at Hisense Arena in August this year and boasts cult heroes Simon Whitlock and Michael Van Gerwen. DPA players have the opportunity to earn wild-card entry into the PDC World Darts Championship. CBBT chair Don Rudd said they can’t wait to host this popular sport and look forward to providing some exciting opportunities for local players to be part of the action. “Part of our agreement is that DPA will provide some places for qualifying locals to play in the tournament. While we are still working on the details, we’d really like to promote a region wide darts festival in the lead up,” said Mr Rudd. The three-day tournament, commencing on the evening of Friday the 31st of May as part of the national tour, will have 130 players and with family and spectators it’s
Mr Rudd said, “We were excited to support this tournament as it is a genuine national touring event that we expect will generate over $200 000 in direct expenditure into the area over the three days and it’s even better that it’s in a time we’d generally consider a quieter time of the year.” Rob Denny, chief executive officer of DPA said he expects the Cobram Barooga event to be a huge success. “The DPA tour takes in Brisbane, Hobart, Sydney and Melbourne and while we are yet to finalise our 2019 tour calendar, the event fits perfectly from a scheduling perspective. We have announced the Cobram Barooga event to our players and some have already booked in to play.” Bobby Brooks, chief executive officer of the Barooga Sporties Group said the event is a fantastic fit for the Group and the idea was generated by a group of the club’s staff that get together regularly to assist in generating ideas to support the club and the area. “It’s really pleasing that this initiative came from our team and with the support of CBBT came to fruition. The DPA have a strong record of delivering fantastic events and we hope that this becomes an annual event for us to look forward to each winter,” said Mr Brooks.

First held in 1986 in Mildura, the games have been held in various venues from Victor Harbour to Wodonga. Moira Shire Mayor Libro Mustica said one of the main attractions of the Tri State Games was it offered an opportunity for people with a disability to participate in competitive sporting activities. “Our local athletes have been very supportive of the Tri State Games in the past, travelling to Horsham in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and Murray Bridge in 2013 and 2014 and they will soon be heading to Port Adelaide in November this year,” Mr Mustica said.
Sportsmen and women with disabilities will descend on Cobram Barooga, coming from far and wide, to compete in the Tri State Games. Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism Inc, Berrigan and Moira shires, Barooga Sporties and Valley Sport announced the 2020 and 2021 Tri State Games will be held in the region. CBBT chairman Don Rudd said the games were an award-winning week-long sporting competition for people with disabilities from South Australia, Victoria and NSW. “The games are held in early November each year and attract up to 300 athletes, plus around 100 coaches and family and support staff,” Rudd said. “The CBBT committee is working hard to bring events to
Moira Shire Council Community House general manager Sally Rice said the games presented an exciting opportunity for Cobram Barooga. “It’s really exciting. It’ll be a huge economic boost, but is also a great opportunity for the athletes, and Cobram and Barooga are really pleased to be hosting,” she said. “We have all these great facilities in Berrigan and Moira shires and we’re hoping to begin attracting more of these bigger events.”

The games will begin with an opening ceremony that includes a street parade and the raising of the Tri State Games flag. Berrigan Shire Mayor Matt Hannan said it was a great cross-border effort to make a successful pitch for this event that would see the whole region buzzing for a full week of competition.
