Brian Nankervis We are delighted to welcome the talented Brian Nankervis to MC this year’s awards.

For the last twelve years, Brian has been writing, producing and co-hosting the A.F.I Award winning SBS music trivia series, RocKwiz. He currently co-hosts, with Richelle Hunt, The Friday Revue each Friday afternoon on ABC Radio Melbourne.

Brian Nankervis was a primary teacher who fled the classroom to become a waiter at theatre restaurant, The Last Laugh.

He was a writer and performer on the hospital soap opera ‘Let The Blood Run Free’ and a regular on ‘Hey Hey It’s Saturday’ as the tortured street poet Raymond J Bartholomeuz.

An experienced MC for a wide variety of public events and corporate functions, Brian regularly performs one-hour poetry show in schools when he’s not on The Friday Revue.

FINALISTS Community Living & Respite Services Community Living & Respite Services (CLRS) is a community organisation founded in 1979 to provide disability support services in the Echuca region. In 2017–18, CLRS supported over 600 people in a range of disability and aged care services with the help of their 216 staff. It aims to provide supported independent living, respite, community access, in home support, supported volunteering and programs for children.

CLRS has developed expertise in providing housing for people with disability and built its first home in 1992, and has since purchased two other properties. In 2011, CLRS developed the Opening Doors Project model and completed the Minor Street house and units in 2014, with the Eyre Street Project house and units being finished in 2017. A third Opening Doors Project is under construction and will be completed in late 2019. These three projects will provide homes for 16 people with disability, which has a significant impact on independence and inclusion and provides certainty and peace of mind for families.

Over the past two years CLRS has successfully transitioned to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which has resulted in additional support for people with disability and significant organisational growth.

Echuca Regional Health Dental Clinic The ERH Dental Clinic sits within the Community Services Division of Echuca Regional Health which brings together client services independent of the hospital or Aged Care facilities.

The dental team is made up of dentists, dental therapists, oral health therapists, dental assistants, dental clinic co-ordinator and currently 4th year dental students from Melbourne University.

Currently up to 40 patients may be seen on a daily basis by senior dentists, graduate dentists, senior dental therapists or the oral health therapists who work on alternate days each week.

The ERH Dental Clinic focuses on the most vulnerable groups within the community, from patients with disability, the aged, those with mental health concerns and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients. ERH has been extensively involved in the Strengthening Hospitals Responses to Family Violence (SHRFV) initiative, which identifies vulnerable children and are also treated as high priority.

The dental team works in conjunction with the ERH Enhanced Maternity Care Program and Social Services team, who both have connections with further groups of vulnerable people within our community. Through these connections, at risk clients are identified and referred to the clinic as required.

FINALISTS Lockington District Business Centre The Lockington District Business Centre commenced in 2002 through a group of community members who wanted to see the only petrol outlet in the town remain open.

It formed a committee to ensure the ongoing sustainability of the business and later took on the Neighbourhood House program. This expanded services and encouraged locals to participate in training, creating programs and activities and assisting with social isolation and encouraging social inclusion.

The centre researches the needs of the community on a continuing basis and with strategic planning seeks resources to provide safe and inclusive services including: providing accommodation, the community bank, library, laundromat, car wash and retaining the only fuel outlet in town.

The Neighbourhood House provides a workshop area in the form of a Men’s Shed, engages youth through a Youth Action Group, manages a community garden to provide gardening skills, social interaction and food for the community.

The centre operates five and a half days per week (Monday to Friday and Saturday mornings) and is predominantly operated by volunteers. The Lockington District Business Centre is a multi-faceted community that adapts and changes with the needs of the community with a strong volunteer base of 39 people.

Rochester Business Network The Rochester Business Network is a driving force behind the progress, sustainability and tourism of Rochester with an aim of keeping the community together in these tough economic times.

The group is made up of approximately 55 members that attend planning and administrative functions as well as provide support, education and training for its members. It utilises the expertise of its members to assist with marketing, planning, organisation and delivery of activities.

The RBN has become the contact point for state, federal and local government as well as the media on most matters concerning the community of Rochester.

It has formed close alliances with its members including Rochester Community House, REDHS (Hospital), Lions Club, Bendigo Community Bank, Campaspe News and work closely with the Shire of Campaspe. It addresses the grass roots and real needs of Rochester.

Warramunda Warramunda is a community-owned, not-for-profit aged care facility that employs 158 staff, making it one of Kyabram’s largest employers.

Its services include; a 61 bed residential aged care facility (high needs aged care), 46 independent living units (retirees), 14 residential apartments/bedsits (for low socioeconomic seniors) and community based home care & NDIS (presently 114 clients).

Warramunda is now embarking on a major capital works program in its residential care facility to increase its capacity to 83 beds and refurbish and modernise other residential, common and admin areas.

In 2018 it further expanded its services to include support for persons with disability under the NDIS scheme. Its clients can now look forward to local faces and continuity of care as a local provider. The Home Care and NDIS business is relatively new (Home Care 2016 & NDIS 2018) with growth exceeding expectation.

Maggie Johnson, Ausure Financial Group (Victoria) Maggie Johnson is a financial planner at Ausure Financial Group (Victoria) (AFGV) and has been working in the financial planning industry since she was 19 years old. She is a passionate people’s person which allows her to build strong relationships with a diverse range of clients and also her work colleagues.

Maggie started in the industry as a trainee with Ausure and completed her Certificate in Business Administration as well as a range of other qualifications and at the end of the year will start her Master of Financial Planning. In early 2019 at the National Ausure Financial Planning conference, Maggie won Young Achiever of the Year for her dedication to exceptional customer service outcomes and high-quality advice to her clients.

Nick Marshall, Biomix Nick has had a long history operating machinery in both quarries and the waste industry and has been with Biomix for three years. Nick started in the company as a machine operator and his skill in the operation of the machinery soon resulted in his promotion to leading hand at the site.

Nick was promoted to the role of operations manager and since then has accomplished many achievements including; increased diversification in the hiring program at Biomix enabling people with additional needs, parents requiring employment during school hours and mentoring to young staff to be trained in a range of different machinery.

Without him in this role, Biomix would not have achieved the transition from a small compost operation to processing 100,000 tonnes of organic material into a premium compost product.

FINALISTS Rocky Acquisto, Billabong Ranch Adventure Park Rocky is 32 years old and an Echuca local who enjoys spending time with his family, running his farm and competing on his horses when time allows. Rocky started full-time employment in the family business in 2004, however began helping from a very young age.

Rocky’s roles include carriage driver, trail ride guide, cattle handler, animal nursery attendant, whip cracking demonstrations both on and off site, camel handler, and so much more.

Rocky is integral in most aspects of decision making and day to day running of the Ranch and Adventure Park. He has excellent customer service skills and quickly develops a rapport with people which always leads to a sale or increased sales.

Samuel Skippen, Subway Kyabram Samuel has worked at Subway Kyabram for just over a year and in that time has gone well and above any employee ever employed in the last eight years. Within six months, he has learnt to not only close the store but to also open. This is amazing as he has only just turned 18. Samuel is very mature, welcoming, sensible, caring and responsible way beyond his age and always with a smile on his face. He shows initiative and assists with ideas and is also extremely helpful with assisting other staff members.

The business has never had an employee who has learnt to do this in such a short time and especially an employee so young.

FINALISTS Northern Hire Group Northern Hire Group began life as Northern Generator Hire and Maxwell Signs in 2014, hiring mainly generators and VMS boards. In October 2014, business was conducted from an office and yard shared with their sister company, ProSanding Timber and Concrete.

In 2015, after needing plant and equipment for ProSanding projects, the team recognised a shortage of equipment for hire in the Echuca Moama area after the closure of Echuca Hire.

With the former Echuca Hire site still vacant and looking for a new tenant, they decided to take on a new venture and extended their hire range to include a broader selection of plant and equipment, aimed predominantly at the construction industry, and in line with other plant and equipment hire companies.

Cabin Connect is an online advertising platform that was designed to fill the void in the market and increase consumers’ awareness around onsite cabins and residential areas by manufactured home estates to advertise their asset online.

Boss Lady Brain is a coaching, mentoring and training agency that empowers people in business. April works with clients one-on-one, hosts group training, facilitates workshops and so much more.

Ellen McNeil, Well Soul Studio Dr Ellen McNeil, a chiropractor and yoga teacher, is devoted to exploring and understanding how we humans construct and make meaning of our world. She has a love of learning and a genuine desire to walk with others as they discover ways to make the most of life, which fuels her compassion and enthusiasm. From this vital source, the ethos of Well Soul Studio emerged, and in partnership with her husband, Cameron Mitchell, in 2018 the wonderful Well Soul space evolved and will continue to do so.

Helen Hartley & Rhiannon Payne, Macca’s Demolition & Asbestos Removal Helen and Rhiannon are the managing partners at Macca’s Demolition & Asbestos Removal, a business they started in July, 2017. They created the business to provide a future for themselves and their families as they enjoyed the idea of a locally-run, family business and decided to lead onto an adventure.
