he name Don has long been synonymous with leadership; with kings, presidents, prominent businessmen, sporting stars, chiefs, noblemen and other rulers since the dawn of time being counted among its numbers.

In the McPherson Media Group’s history alone, the late ‘The Don’ McPherson — the third generation of McPhersons to publish the Shepparton News — provided leadership to the company, its staff and the wider community for many decades.

Given this history, the meaning of the name Don, and the legacy of ‘The Don’; the inaugural edition of Don magazine has been released to pay homage to this.

Providing leadership to men in the Goulburn Valley region, Don magazine shares their stories and provides interesting and informative articles on fashion, cars, food, sport, technology and more.

THE DON Don McPherson was the third generation of McPhersons to publish the Shepparton News — so he was born and bred a newspaper man.

Don was born in 1925, finished school at The High School and started an engineering degree at Melbourne University before joining the RAAF and serving in New Guinea during World War II. He was a gritty defender with the Shepparton East Football Club and a great community man.

Don always said the community had been good to The News and The News must repay the compliment. He was a keen member of Apex, the Junior Chamber of Commerce (known as the JayCees) and Shepparton and South Shepparton Rotary Clubs, among many other engagements — and he insisted his family and staff needed to “put in”.

Don had two favourite quotes. The first, from Hugh Cudlipp, was “the job of a newspaper is to afflict the comfortable, and comfort the afflicted”. The second was from a wise editor who said “where truth and charity collide, let charity prevail”. The Don died in 2005.

he inaugural edition of Don magazine aims to inspire, entertain and inform; providing a voice for men within the region.

The magazine has been launched in conjunction with the Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch on August 24 — a local event for local men — started in 2009 by the late Chris McPherson, son of ‘The Don’ McPherson, who died from prostate cancer in 2015. Not only does this event help to educate the community on the signs of prostate cancer and other cancers affecting men, it has raised $1.7 million in funds over the past decade, much of which has stayed locally to fund a prostate cancer specialist nurse at GV Health.

Our Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch and Prostate Cancer Awareness section from page 103 shines a light on the event, the disease and stories from survivors.

Kicking off the feature articles in Don magazine is a stellar read from page 8 on Shepparton ex-pat and footballer extraordinaire Steele Sidebottom, who is currently in his 10th season with the Magpies. Steele talks family, footy and fashion, while modelling some of the latest looks — all from local retailers.

We also look at the other side of the working journey — the end of a lucrative career and the beginning of a new chapter — with GMCU CEO Rene Deen’s retirement, read from page 35.

Some of McPherson Media Group’s brightest voices have written a column on things that truly matter to them — on grappling with grandfather-hood, a man’s perspective on body image and insight into the wild ways of the gaming world.

With Father’s Day coming up on September 2 — and let’s be honest, it’s just a great excuse to indulge our lustlists — we have extensive coverage of the latest men’s fashion, accessories, cars, four-wheel drives, boats, jet skis and motorbikes.

While on enticing topics, we take a look at all things alcoholic and gastronomic — with beers, whiskies, meat smoking and the evolution of pub-grub all on the menu.

“I don’t take anything for granted, I’m very fortunate to do what I do and get paid good money to do it — but I’d like to think I’m still the same.”

I

n his 10th season at the biggest football club in Australia, the 27-year-old is no longer the Murray Bushranger with an interesting name who kicked 10 goals in the 2008 TAC Cup grand final.

He is a leader, a best and fairest winner, a ball magnet and a role model to the next generation of Magpies still growing their feathers.

His life flipped overnight when his name was called to join the Magpies in 2008, a seemingly rushed start to a career years in the making.

“I got drafted on a Saturday and on Sunday I was getting picked up by (former Collingwood list manager) Derek Hine, and we drove straight down to Melbourne,” Steele said.

“I had to adapt pretty quickly. Right now though, I don’t know anything different. I love the job that I have and I would give anything to keep it.”

But at his core, the handsomely-paid footballer is the same family-oriented kid who grew up in the town of just 300 people.

“From our backyard, you could jump

through fences and you were at the Tally football ground,” he reflected.

“There was a core group of around 20 kids, we used to play tiggy after school and you could hide anywhere around town.

“Since I was born until I was 17 I’d lived in a small, little country town and done the same thing kind of every day.

You get drafted and you have to move straight away.

“I don’t take anything for granted, I’m very fortunate to do what I do and get paid good money to do it — but I’d like to think I’m still the same.”

The renowned Sidebottom clan remains the backbone of the Tallygaroopna seniors, with brothers Trent, Tyson and Josh, as well as cousin Mitch, turning out for the club this season. When you add in brother Ryan, playing English county cricket with Warwickshire, as well as Steele himself, we are talking about a small family sporting factory.

“Five boys, I’m sure Mum had her hands full at times, but we are like five best mates,” Steele said. >> AUGUST 2018

“I love my brothers, my Mum, my Dad; they’ve obviously shaped me to be the person I am today. I’m lucky to be in the family I am, family is everything and you’d do anything for them.”

But Collingwood’s vice-captain departed his childhood home for bigger and better things, and now is not content simply being part of the AFL system.

years, he has well and truly moved into the engine room.

Initially uncomfortable being part of the Magpie leadership group, Steele has learned his exemplary actions — both on and off the field — are exactly what a football club wants from its pillars. “(Collingwood premiership captain) Nick Maxwell was a big one; he mentioned not only for me as a person but for my

footy as well, it would be a good move for me to step up into the role, and I’m glad I did now,” he said.

“I’ve been there for the last four years, and it’s not only improved me as a footballer but definitely as a person as well.”

“I’ve never been the guy to be standing up in front of everyone and giving a rant or anything like that, I like to think my actions do more of the talking.”

A burning desire to take his beloved club back to the promised land is clear.

Steele knows it has been four seasons since Collingwood played finals, and has learned nothing in football can be taken for granted.

“When I first got to the club, we went prelim, grand final, grand final, prelim,” he said.

“It felt like that was just how it was going to be, we’d play finals every year, but to not play the last four years makes 14 |

you hungry.”

As one of the league’s model citizens, his experiences with media criticism are more team-oriented than personal, but he has learned to deal with it and set it to one side.

“When you work out everything that comes in the media is never as good as it is, or as bad as what it seems. This is my 10th year now, you learn to live with it.

I love Collingwood and I couldn’t wish to be anywhere else really.”

Away from football, where his special talent shines, Steele is like any other young man; an avid — and improving — golfer who walks his dogs in the park with longterm girlfriend Alisha Edwards.

He also has an eye toward life after football, undertaking a pre-apprenticeship in carpentry with Magpie teammates — just to add to his jam-packed schedule.

“Every day off we go over there and try and become carpenters. I think the course might go for two years and then once

you’re through that you have to do about 800 hours of work. That will be the challenging part trying to fit that in.”

He might exist in a world of intense media pressure — particularly being at Collingwood — but Steele remains a laidback and warm individual, getting paid to live his dream.

While he can only come home when the Magpies play on Friday nights, cruelling his ability to visit, the lure of home remains strong in his heart.

“I definitely miss it. I don’t get the chance to come back that much during footy season — when you finish down the bottom of the ladder you don’t get too

many Friday night games.

“To be able to get back and visit the family is always great, and I still always think I’ll move home, back to Shepp, after footy is finished.”

GRAPPLING WITH GRANDFATHER-HOOD It’s a funny thing being a grandfather. One minute you’re a motorbikin’, guitarslashing, Xbox-warrior kind of fellow who spends his spare cash on Call of Duty reloads and Boss effects loop pedals, and who worries about what kind of beard shape would look the coolest for your next arts festival gig, then the next minute you’re a grandfather.

N

obody prepares you for this.

There are no post-natal support groups for grandfathers.

Any spare time or cash you now have is spent on Lego, raspberry slushies and high-interest savings accounts.

Suddenly there is a whole big-sky future again — and it’s not all about you.

You thought once your kids move out of home, it’s back to me-me-me time right?

Wrong.

Grandfather-hood arrives on your doorstep like a big, fat, jam donut with lime green icing and sprinkles — and suddenly you’re back to chewing on life’s gristle.

Albeit with vegemite.

It’s back to scrabbling around on your hands and knees looking for Darth Vader’s mini-Lego mask in the shagpile carpet.

Only this time your fingers and eyes don’t work like they used to as you search for things the size of a pin-head.

The only way a mini-Lego piece emerges from a shagpile carpet is when your knee finds it.

Then you limp for a week with a skin indentation shaped like Darth Vader’s boot.

Nobody tells you this stuff about being a grandparent.

On street corners and supermarkets the talk is all about sleepy-time cuddles or bouncy-knee sing-songs and the joy of handing them back when it’s poo time.

That’s the Disney gift-card version of grandparent-hood.

What about the smacks in the face with a Toys R Us front-end loader?

What about going to the supermarket

with a 45-degree angle spine that made you look like a 90-year-old potato picker because you were forced to listen to a five-minute story about why caterpillars don’t like cheese from a person 90 cm high?

What about that conversation you had with your adult son about how to use Chrome Cast on your TV while his threeyear-old son fell off a stool trying to reach the syrup jar?

You went home and plugged a USB into your mobile phone and wasted a morning trying to get YouTube on your TV. This is not the sort of thing you want to be doing when time is running out like sand through an hour-glass.

On the other hand, grandfather-hood

presents valuable times that you had completely forgotten about the first time around.

The other day I had a conversation with a small hand wearing a green hair-tie about snakes and hats.

The end result was a decision that snakes should wear hats because it would make them a lot easier to spot in the long grass.

I now have a useful picture on my fridge of a snake wearing a fluorescent green hat.

It reminds me of the time we wondered aloud.

And the value of the time we have left.

Familiar face calls it a day

A larger-than-life character with a wicked sense of humour has walked out the Goulburn Murray Credit Union doors for the last time.

ené Deen has taken up the position as deputy CEO and chief of operations and finance at a small enterprise.

That enterprise is the home he has made with wife Maggie.

However his actual career story — and an illustrious one at that — started 45 years ago when a young and audacious René applied for the position of manager at what was then the Shepparton Credit Union.

“I brashly thought, because of my banking background, I would apply,” René said.

“As it happened, they were looking for someone with a management background, but I still got lucky and was appointed as a teller.”

He started at the bottom but René worked his way up the ladder to chief executive officer.

“People ask how can you stay in one job for 45 years, but I didn’t, the job kept changing,” he said.

“I’ve really enjoyed it all the way through.

“Coming to work was a highlight to me; I’d get up and wanted to go to work and do whatever it took to get the job done.”

In an industry that has been forever changed by the advent of technology, René has moved with the times and he said he

had to avoid a “snow job”.

But now, in his own words, he’s old and maybe isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed anymore.

For René it was something Maggie said that made him realise it was time to retire.

“Maggie made the mistake of saying ‘you’ll never retire, you’ll die there’ and I thought ‘I’ll prove you wrong’,” he said.

“There just comes a time where you think maybe I don’t like getting out of bed as much as I used to.

“I didn’t want to leave and be totally useless; I want to still have a bit of energy to do this and that and maybe contribute back into the town.”

In 2006 René was quoted in the Shepparton News saying he had no ideas about retirement and not much has changed except for the arrival of his grandchildren Chase and Hattie.

“I enjoy the grandkids; I’ve got a little man and a new little baby girl and they’re just gorgeous and over the years I’ve spent a lot of time at work and not at home,” he said.

René said it might be a cliché but he was looking forward to spending time with his wife, daughter Chelsea, son-in-law Matt and their children.

“We just want to sit back for a month or two and see where we go and just get away from work and switch off,” he said.

“As Dad used to always say ‘just smell the roses”.

Twelve years on he is still hoping to get back into golf as well a spot of fishing with Matt.

“I don’t know why I stopped playing maybe I got a bit sooky — it’s a bit cold sometimes and I find it a bit hard to walk the course now, for some reason I seem to run out of puff,” he said.

“We haven’t been game to tell the women yet but we would like to get a slightly bigger boat but that’s just between us boys at the moment.”

When he’s not a doting grandfather, or scooting around in a golf cart or a boat, you’ll find René at the footy watching Undera with his mate, like Statler and Waldorf from the Muppets.

“The two old farts who sit in the balcony and criticise everyone — that’s me and my mate at the football; criticising everyone, saying we could do it better,” he said.

No matter what retirement holds, René said after a lifetime of working he will have to keep himself busy or he’s not too sure what will happen to the mind and the body.

Building defences for cyberattack Australian businesses, big and small, are at risk of cyber-attack, according to Griffiths Goodall Insurance Brokers director Benjamin Goodall.

T

he loss of personal and corporate data has far-reaching ramifications that could change the way business is carried out all over the world.

With attacks dramatically on the rise it has been the customer’s personal data that has been impacted — credit card numbers, passport numbers and medical records.

Benjamin said current insurance policies did not cover the range of costs an attack brings, and the exposure any business with an internet connection has is considerable.

He shares his views on the state of the market.

While cyber is evolving at a rapid pace, there continues to be a much smaller uptake in cyber insurance across all levels of businesses in Australia, than is the case in the United States.

The European Union is somewhere in the middle, although it is also becoming increasingly concerned — hence its new mandatory breach notification laws.

Nevertheless, cyber insurance is on a fast moving upwards trajectory and has been growing at levels not previously seen in traditional lines of business.

We have seen a consistent trend of increasing capacity and capabilities in the local cyber market over the past 36 months.

Policy coverage has markedly improved with insurers changing focus from a pure reimbursement policy to providing an immediate triage solution.

The local market is now able to deliver upwards of $150 million in capacity with almost all major insurers now participating.

Rates continue to be competitive, in part driven by more market entrants; however the expectation is that they are approaching minimum premiums levels.

Although the focus is on improved risk management around cyber exposures, such improvements may not necessarily correlate with a proportional reduction in premiums or improved cover.

In part this is due to insurers already heavily discounting premiums in order to secure placements, and coverage is already significantly improved compared to last year.

While the breadth of coverage has increased, it should be recognised that insurers’ policy wordings are still written on more traditional formats, and will require enhancements to certain terms and conditions to provide clarity of coverage and peace of mind for the insured.

DATA BREACH: IT’S ABOUT TO GET SERIOUS Australia’s mandatory data breach notification laws came into effect from February 22, 2018.

They apply to public and private organisations that are already subject to the Privacy Act, which includes Australian Government agencies (excluding state and local government) and all businesses and not-for-profit organisations with an annual turnover more than $3 million.

It is clear that a significant data breach could be financially crippling for many organisations.

The penalties for “serious or repeated non-compliance with mandatory notification requirements” include fines of up to $360 000 for individuals and $1.8 million

for organisations.

Additional resultant costs could range from business interruption, incident response, third party claims and legal costs, to customer notification expenses and damage to data.

Reputational costs and the possible loss of confidence from shareholders and other stakeholders add to the impact of such an event.

In the US, where there have been many prominent data breaches, class actions have been taken against directors and officers of hacked organisations.

What is your exposure and how will you respond?

Over the past 12 months we have been assisting clients with risk quantification exercises to identify the scope of their potential cyber issues, and then working with insurers to develop policies to address possible exposures.

Many such policies also provide access to incidence response panels that bring together experts in fields such as forensics, technology, legal, credit monitoring, PR and more.

In preparing for the mandatory breach reporting environment, organisations should now be developing response plans to answer questions such as: »» The actions to be taken if a breach is suspected. »» Who is responsible for each of these actions. »» Who will provide the specialist expertise, not currently available in-house.

A great place to invest

Shepparton real estate is booming, with high demand delivering quality results after more than a decade of flat prices.

F

or a period of between 10 to 12 years (2005–06 to 2016–17) the value of residential properties in general in this area were extremely flat.

Although much local discussion during this period pointed to quoting increases or falling prices and values, the evidence is very clear that it was a flat line with prices, while Melbourne and coastal prices were spirally upwardly out of control.

During mid 2017 the first signs of a recovery were starting to show, with the increase in buyer demand particularly under $400 000 for residential properties on the standard size block.

We are now seeing some capital growth although it may be a modest $10 000 to $20 000 for well-presented properties.

Buyer demand continues to come from a number of avenues including investment money from Melbourne and Sydney residents who are now looking at regional cities for increased gross rental returns, rather than solely capital returns.

Various ethnic communities relocating to Shepparton — mainly from Sydney — as well as local investors who have previously been absent are now starting to believe in their own backyard again leading to increased demand.

With first home buyers returning to the market as a result of stamp duty relief and a rising Shepparton population, demand continues to grow.

While residential property investment returns in capital cities and around the coastal regions can be as little as two to three per cent gross, in regional areas between six and seven per cent is currently the norm.

This, coupled with a high occupancy rate in Shepparton, is leading to wellpriced rental properties being snapped up quickly.

Investors are currently looking at a variety of property types, with some looking at the cheapest properties on the market to simply rent out, while others prefer older homes that can be renovated with

the option to construct one or two units in the backyard in the future.

Whole unit complexes appear to be desirable for self-managed superannuation funds, allowing total control of the complete property without being restricted by body corporate rules and regulations.

JOB INTERVIEW DRESSING 101 How many times have you heard the old chestnut, ‘clothes make the man’?

I

s it true and does it hold any relevance today?

According to Talisman Menswear’s Paul Jerome, the answer is yes.

“One of the biggest mistakes guys make is their choice of clothing,” Paul said.

“The reality is, guys can be quite lazy, leaving things to the last minute and giving little thought to how they should be presenting themselves.”

Paul said dressing for a job interview was a classic example.

“When you present yourself to a prospective employer, just because you might wear overalls for the eventual job, does not mean you should wear them in the interview,” he said.

“Stand out from the crowd or in this case, the other interviewees, and wear something more respectful, such as a shirt, tie and dress pants with clean shoes.

“Better yet, if you have a suit, wear that.”

But why, especially if the job doesn’t call for one, should you wear a suit?

“It shows you have respect for yourself, and the person you are about to interview with,” Paul said.

“I’ll give you a very hot tip, before you have even said a word, a judgment is quite often made about your appearance, and no amount of talking can outdo a lack of swagger.

“Get your swagger on, and make that ‘first impression a lasting impression’.”

MODDING IS A GAME ANYONE CAN PLAY Blokes are constantly modifying their cars, bikes, trucks, tools and houses. In the 21st century, personal computers are also often subjected to modifications and upgrades.

T

he tinkering doesn’t stop there — modifying, or ‘modding’, the games played on those computers is an entirely brave new world unto itself.

Today, players can enjoy the technical art of modding games or, thanks to online sharing and downloads, benefit from millions of add-ons, engine tweaks and unique content created by other players.

Many PC games, and an increasing number of those played on consoles, receive the loving attention of their own player-base.

In the modern gaming era, mods can be found online for many genres and styles of games. First-person shooters, action titles, RPGs, simulators featuring trains, planes, automobiles, even city-planning — all can be played above and beyond the game engines on which they are based thanks to the so-called amateur-created enhancements of devotees.

Creating new ways to play and new content became increasingly easier over the years as game designers began to realise facilitating player-generated mods could unlock rich new veins of development. It can also unlock riches as unpaid designers extend and enhance the desirability of an original title.

While not as old as the history of computer games, the history of modding computer games has had a profound effect on the gaming industry. Many of today’s most celebrated titles began as user-made

mods for commercial games.

The arrival of the internet in the mid-90s fostered the environment for gaming mods to flourish. Rather than just tinkering alone and possibly sharing their efforts among a clique of friends or at a local-area network party, budding amateur game developers could suddenly share their creations internationally.

One of the first games to flourish in this new environment was Quake II, a first-person shooter with a heritage that stemmed from previous classics Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Doom.

At the time, the emergent internet was also super-charging another facet of gaming — multi-player. The Quake II engine, its modding community and the ability to play online with other humans created a nexus where all three combined and flourished.

Some of the first Quake II mods are still alive and well in spirit — almost two-anda-half decades later.

Capture the Flag, Action Quake II and Team Fortress were three of the most popular Quake II multi-player mods to first flourish, drawing in hundreds of thousands of players — epic numbers in their day.

While CTF has largely died out, Team Fortress was ported to the Half-Life engine and is still played by millions. Action Quake inspired a new style of mod, also built using the Half-Life engine. Its name was Counter Strike.

Player Unknown’s BattleGround was initially created as a mod of a mod.

Developer Brendan Greene created it as a remagining of the DayZ mod for the Arma 2 engine.

Team Fortress and Counter Strike still top the player charts and revenue streams on the Steam marketplace, and were instrumental in the Steam digital trading platform itself gaining traction.

Defence of the Ancients (DotA), a mod for the Warcraft III engine, created and popularised a form of gaming now known as Multi-player Online Battle Arena.

DotA 2 is another one of Steam’s most played titles and has spawned a professional competition scene that offers prize money and draws audiences in their millions.

Game developer Bethesda is so enamoured with the mods created for its games that it publishes a development toolkit to help anyone interested give it a go.

Team Fortress began as a mod for Quake II and was updated using Valve’s Source Engine for a fresh release in 2007. It is still very popular today.

Bethesda Softworks’ Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises are two of the most modded games of the modern era with tens of thousands of add-ons available online.

As a result, its extremely popular titles Skyrim and Fallout 4 have benefited from thousands of game-play and content enhancements, with very large third party websites like Nexusmods.com hosting it all.

Publishing a software development kit, or SDK, has become standard practice for many game developers who recognise the commercial value in harnessing the creativity of their player-base.

The Battle Royal genre featured in Fortnite was developed by Brendan Greene who goes by the online nickname Player Unknown. Greene created Player Unknown’s BattleGround as a mod of a mod, basing it on the DayZ mod for the Arma 2 engine. DayZ also evolved into a popular commercial title.

The history of computer game mods is so closely tied to the history of computer games that the two are near inseparable.

Many of the biggest names in game development got their start tinkering with and improving the titles they loved. Modding has become so successful that facilitating it has evolved into standard game development practice.

Whether you just enjoy games or fancy a career in game development, entering the vast, wonderful — and at times weird and whacky — world of modding is a rewarding activity to investigate.

Too many blokes keep their feelings to themselves

ne-in-eight men will experience depression and one-in-five will experience anxiety at some stage during their life.

Going it alone when you’re feeling off just adds to the risk of depression or anxiety going undiagnosed.

Taking action is the right thing to do, as depression is a high risk factor for suicide, and is a huge reason for the incredible disparity in suicide rates between men and women.

Blokes make up an average six out of eight suicides every day in Australia.

That means the number of men who die by suicide every year is around twice the national road toll.

When you’re feeling down, taking action to call in extra support is the right thing to do. Everyone’s mental health has peaks and troughs throughout their life, 30 | DON MAGAZINE

and everyone reacts differently to stressful events and situations.

There are a range of simple ways to manage your mental health. These will help you to perform at your very best, lead to improved quality of life and maximise your ability to support your family and mates in times of need.

BUSTING SOME CANCER MYTHS

FACT MYTH

With Australian men contributing to some of the highest rates of melanoma, prostate, bowel and lung cancers in the developed world, DON magazine sat down with North Victoria Oncology consultant medical oncologists Zee Wan Wong and Javier Torres to dispel some common myths.

Fact: That can depend on the types of cancer; we are seeing younger patients diagnosed with bowel, lung and breast cancers.

The reasons for this are multiple including exposure to different risk factors such as smoking, changes in diet amongst others.

Fact: Only about five per cent of cancers, depending on the type of cancer, are hereditary; the other 90 to 95 per cent really are sporadic and random and have other risk factors involved.

Fact: While smoking is a risk factor for lung cancer, there are others, for example occupational exposure to asbestos or chemicals.

Sometimes it’s caused by a sporadic mutation so if anyone has not been exposed to the various risk factors, but has a persistent cough, or other symptoms, they should seek medical help immediately.

Fact: The greater understanding we have of cancer, guides us to choose the best treatment option for the best outcome. A biopsy allows us to know the exact type of cancer and stage of the cancer and most biopsies can be safely done in the local area.

Society does not bombard men with almost constant reminders of what a ‘perfect’ body should look like, but that does not mean we are immune to body image pressure.

y no stretch of the imagination is our plight anywhere near that of women and girls across the globe, but we have our own struggles with weight and body composition.

My own weight has been a source of great frustration since my high school years.

Looking back on pictures of when I was at school is like looking at a completely different person.

The Tyler Maher I see now is healthy, bordering on skinny, with the oxymoronic combination of a distinct lack of vitamin D and far too many freckles.

But when I remember looking in the mirror as a teen the main memories I have are of a pudgy boy with very little in the way of attractive features.

When I eventually stopped running

most nights of the week and discovered fast food drive-throughs and alcohol my weight ballooned significantly for a number of years until I hit 110 kg and decided enough was enough.

I imagine the torture I put my body through after that was indicative of what many of us feel we have to do in order to successfully ‘diet’.

I ate less than half the recommended calorie intake for a man of my height and age while exercising seven to 10 times a week.

It was painful, but I lost 20 kg and was in the best shape of my life.

But I still wasn’t satisfied.

After meeting my fiancee Grace I relaxed the regime to the point that now, around two years later, my weight is out to 115 kg.

While I’m not happy it has gone that far in the other direction, it has not yet triggered a massive overhaul in my daily life.

It leads me to the conclusion that body image is intrinsically linked to feeling loved.

My initial blowout came in the midst of a four-year relationship, while my current weight gain happened after meeting the love of my life.

So maybe we don’t need to diet at all to feel happy.

We just need to find someone who will love us no matter what the scale says.

Soppy as all hell I know, but facts are facts — and sugary sweets always taste better when they are shared by candlelight.

BE YOUR BEST SELF As you age and eventually retire, the time you have to focus on yourself increases, and Joe said making time for yourself and ensuring you’re fit and healthy becomes more important than ever.

“It always comes back to my favourite saying — be the best you that you can be,” he said.

“You don’t have to be an Arnold Schwarzenegger, just be the best version of yourself … You’re not past anything.”

While denying yourself a slice of cake or some hot chips might be difficult, he said it was important to be mindful of how much you’re eating.

Slowing down when eating and simply talking during meals or taking 10 minutes longer to eat can make all the difference; Joe said your body would be able to recognise you’re eating and respond accordingly.

“Spread it out or eat smaller meals more often so your body is never hungry,” he said.

THE BEARD and the beautiful Behind every hipster with that perfect facial hair is a beard-care regime involving much time, product and technique. That effortless “I woke up looking like this” appeal can be achieved with a few simple tips and tricks.

TRAIN THE MANE Keep those hairs in place with daily encouragement, training them to sit where you want them to with a boar bristle brush and comb. Keep each hair at exactly the length you are after with some minor weekly clipping, which will keep the overall shape you are after and remove any split ends. During your morning shower don’t forget to wash the hair in your beard, soaping it up with a beard wash and softener a few days a week.

SOFTEN WITH BEARD OIL Even beards have issues with hydration, so an oil applied daily can help to keep it lustrous. While washing keeps facial hair clean it can also remove natural oils so a beard oil applied as a leave-in conditioning

product helps to combat dryness. After finishing your morning shower towel dry your bead and then apply a few drops of beard oil — right after a shower is the best time for application as your pores and hair cells are the most open.

Heavier in texture it keeps facial hair softer for longer, but for some beards the product can be a bit intense. Place a small amount between your fingers and rub them together to get an even application and style, style, style. Add a little more if needed to achieve the desired result.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE A great place to start is with a typical comb, which has smaller and larger bristles. The former is for working with your moustache or smaller amounts of facial hair running down the side of your face and the latter is for your beard. To begin styling, hold your comb upwards and comb the beard upwards and away from your face to create a fluffing effect — the more the hairs are separated the more volume you will have.

More dedicated beard groomers may purchase a brush designed especially for the wiry locks. The benefits of a brush are more than just styling — they also evenly distribute the skin’s natural oil and keep the beard free from grime and dead skin cells.

From espresso to flat white — choose your perfect brew Scientists may continue to debate the health benefits of coffee but one thing is for sure, Australia is a nation of caffeine addicts. Whether you’re a coffee snob or a beginner barista, Don magazine’s guide to coffee will help you order or make the perfect drop every time.

ESPRESSO AKA the short black, an espresso (pronounced ess-PRESS-oh) is a full-flavoured, concentrated form of coffee and the foundation of almost every caffeinated beverage.

While a serving of espresso is called a shot it is meant to be sipped slowly, completely unlike a single gulp of tequila.

ESPRESSO DOPPIO A doppio, AKA a double espresso, is exactly that — two espresso shots in one cup.

RISTRETTO Stronger than its espresso sibling, a ristretto is traditionally drunk as a black coffee shot.

It is extracted with the same amount of coffee but half the amount of water for a more concentrated, darker and more balanced result.

A single or double ristretto can be used as a base for a latte or cappuccino too.

CAFÉ LATTE For those looking for something a little sweeter, the café latte, or latte for short, is an espresso-based drink with steamed milk and foam.

CAPPUCCINO A cappuccino may be similar to a latte but the key difference is more foam and a sprinkle of chocolate on top.

FLAT WHITE You won’t find it all over the world, but in Australia a flat white is made the same as a cappuccino but without the foam and chocolate.

THE PERFECT MILK FOAM The key to making a fine and creamy foam has nothing to do with the type of milk or its fat content but its temperature.

For barista-quality coffee the milk should be between 4 and 8°C. From full-fat and low-fat to goat’s and even soy, any milk can create the perfect foam consistency; it just comes down to personal taste.

CHILLED BREWS When coffee is chilled slowly in the fridge it develops an unpleasant bitter taste.

Instead, prepare a fresh coffee and shake it up with ice or pour it over ice cubes to chill

TIP: For maximum enjoyment, the experts recommend pre-warming the cup with hot water, steam or even a specialised cup warmer.

SHORT MACCHIATO Another member of the espresso family but mellowed with a dollop of steamed milk and foam.

A long macchiato is the same but with two shots of espresso.

Lazy Dog Ale by Black Dog Brewery in Glenrowan Style: Golden ale ABV: 4.8 per cent Drink: Straight from the fridge

TASTING NOTES A touch of wheat, noble German hops and local aroma hops give this golden ale a slight edge over others. It comes across the palate crisply, but with enough texture to set it apart. You’ll find spice and tropical fruit aromas in the glass and a gentle bitterness to round everything out. It’s not a complicated situation: just a great beer to have in the fridge.

ABOUT THE BREWERY Black Dog began as a bit of a side project for fourth-generation winemaker James Booth. The family has owned and operated Taminick Cellars in Glenrowan since 1904. James still makes wine, but he’s also getting pretty good at making beer.

Since launching in 2011, he’s collaborated with a number of local and international brewers and experimented with barrel ageing. He even grows his own hops for use in their Estate beers.

TASTING NOTES When poured, it’s slightly hazy, with loads of fresh and vibrant aromas. It’s almost delicate in its citrus-and-stone fruit boldness. The winner here isn’t just bitterness or aroma: it’s a wall of flavour from start to finish. The hops take over, leaving the malt as almost an afterthought — but the beer’s good enough that you won’t miss it.

ABOUT THE BREWERY Way back in the early days, before IPAs made it into every inner-city pub, there was Jamieson’s The Beast. That monster of a malt-and-citrus-bomb IPA had been around for almost a decade before Jeff and Jeanette Whyte sold Jamieson Brewery and moved on. Now you can find them 30 minutes up the road from their old place. Fortunately for beer lovers, Jeff is still quietly doing his thing, pushing out great beer and doing it better than most.

Stubborn Russian by Bright Brewery in Bright Style: Russian imperial stout ABV: 11 per cent Drink: Leave it out for an hour

TASTING NOTES Stubborn Russian is a series of imperial stouts that Bright has brewed over the past few years. Each one has been a bit different. One year it was conditioned with brettanomyces yeast, and the next it contained local chocolate from Bright Chocolate Factory. It’s always big, boozy and packs a lot of punch.

Each year is like a living history of the

brewery as brewers come and go and ingredients change. That makes it an excellent beer to compare and contrast over time. Cellar it for one to five years.

ABOUT THE BREWERY Bright is in Victoria’s beautiful High Country, overlooking mountains and rivers that make it feel like a slice of the Swiss Alps. The brewery began in 2005 and has since been expanding slowly but steadily. The hospitality venue packs people in year round and its new production brewery is working towards becoming completely solar powered — it makes sense to want to protect an environment this nice. It doesn’t hurt that the beers are great too.

TASTING NOTES This was the first saison I ever tried and it changed me a little. I don’t know why, but it did. Since then I’ve gone on to discover the esoteric world of this undefinable Belgian style, but I’ll never forget this version. Bright yellow with a touch of haze, it comes out in a lively pour.

Aromas of hay, lemon zest and grassy spice lead into a spritzy palate that’s driven by citrus and a touch of candied banana. It leaves as quickly as it is washed over, leaving behind just a hint of bitterness. The brewery designed this beer for the dinner table, from its packaging to its flavour, and they nailed it.

ABOUT THE BREWERY Bridge Road founder Ben Kraus is proud that his brewery is family owned and right in the heart of historic Beechworth. He launched it in his parents’ shed in 2004, but since then they have moved further into the main township where he and his wife, Maria, operate a bustling taproom and pizzeria. Ben is a former winemaker and often experiments with spontaneous wine yeast and barrels. If you’re anywhere near Beechworth, the detour is worth it.

ow, more often than not, diners can choose from such gastronomic delights as crispy pork belly, vegan stir-fry or Spanish paella.

Shepparton’s Aussie Hotel owner Paul Tsobaris has been in the pub game for almost 40 years and has seen menus evolve to cater for savvy patrons who are becoming increasingly interested in healthy eating.

Varieties of salads, pastas, grilled and stir-fried foods now make up a large portion of menus, with consideration for vegetarians and those with dietary requirements such as gluten-free.

“People also want to know where their food has come from; we have a seasonal menu and source as much of our produce as possible from the local area,” Paul said.

Steak remains a constant with diners, and fish is still in demand, although premium fillets of barramundi or salmon are often ordered in preference to traditional battered and fried fish.

While menus have evolved, Paul said one thing hadn’t changed.

“People still expect value for money. I always tell my chefs to be generous with the food. I would rather people leave food on their plate than leave here hungry.”

LOW & SLOW IS THE WAY TO GO Australia’s relationship with smoking has been a slow burn.

T

his carnivorous trend has a long tradition in the United States and is now the hottest barbecue method down under.

The low and slow barbecue movement is all about experiencing the flavours of perfectly smoked meat.

It is not difficult to cook meat that falls off the bone, it just takes a little patience, according to keen smoker and Barbeques Galore Shepparton owner Jason Bathman.

“Smoking can be made as easy as you want or if you like a challenge and like to play with fire you can have a lot of fun,” Jason said.

“The electric smokers take the easy side of smoking, you can set and forget; or the solid fuel smokers are more of a product where you share a beer with your mate while stoking the fire.”

Smoking over a long period of time at a low temperature ensures a high internal temperature without drying out the meat.

“Cooking at a lower temperature means the moisture isn’t evaporated from the meat,” Jason said.

“To get the best results an instant read thermostat is a must. They are essential because we want to keep an eye on the internal temperature.”

Smoking is a time game, but the results are worth it. From succulent pork ribs to tasty lamb shoulder, Jason said the options were endless.

“Brisket is probably the biggest known smoked food, it takes anywhere between five and eight hours depending on the thickness of the meat,” he said.

“To get the best results you need to be patient and, when you are, you get meat falling off the bone.”

Smoking isn’t necessarily an expensive hobby; Jason said smokers start from as little as $100 and go right up to $3000 for some serious smoking business.

As well as offering an extensive range of equipment, Barbeques Galore Shepparton also does regular cook-ups on a Friday to show budding smokers how it is done.

The business also sells a range of rubs and sauces to enhance flavour, plus all the smoking essentials like charcoal and pellets.

SMOKING 101 What’s the difference between a smoker and a barbecue?

Smokers are not like the traditional barbecues you are used to. Instead of putting your food directly onto the grill over direct heat to cook for a short amount of time, smokers use low and slow heat combined with smoke and moisture to infuse food with a smoky flavour when cooking.

What is the difference between each type of smoker?

There are three types of smokers.

Charcoal smokers are unbeatable for smoky flavour but harder to master for first-time smokers as the temperature is a lot harder to regulate than gas or electric.

February 14, 1977 was a typical summer’s day at Wooreen, a small farming community in the rolling green hills north of Leongatha in South Gippsland.

A

t the local single-teacher primary school, a timber classroom set in idyllic surrounds, the nine students had headed outside for morning recess after a solid session of learning.

What happened next stunned and shocked the nation.

On only his ninth day of teaching, newly graduated Rob Hunter was confronted by the students rushing back into the classroom, followed by a gun-toting, balaclava-wearing man.

The man, Edwin John Eastwood, was a convicted felon, perpetrator of the Faraday school kidnapping five years earlier and on the run, having escaped from prison.

To buy time Eastwood left a note on the school door, advising parents the teacher and students had gone on a nature walk in nearby bushland, before escaping with his 10 hostages.

Bound, gagged and blindfolded, Rob was separated from his young charges who were chained together in the back of the getaway vehicle.

“Unable to support the children was a frustratingly helpless situation. The kidnapper was in a heightened state of anxiety while at the school so I mostly went along with the demands, obeyed all instructions,” Rob said.

“I had knots in my guts, shaking all over, scared for my life. I was most concerned that I would be shot and left somewhere or just dumped in some remote spot.” >> 70 |

>> The ensuing two-day ordeal resulted in a further six people being kidnapped, a ransom demand and an extensive police manhunt that culminated in Eastwood being shot and recaptured, and the safe release of all hostages.

No counselling was offered. Twentyyear-old Rob, the youngest son of a Kyabram dairy farming family, and his students had three days off and returned to school.

“The children and I had to get back on the horse without a proper debrief or chance to communicate details or express feelings,” Rob said.

“The main debrief was at the hands of police in Sale on the Tuesday after our rescue, needing to make statements — the police were excellent.”

Despite the shocking start to his teaching career Rob remained with the education department for 41 years, retiring from his most recent role as chaplain and wellbeing teacher at Kyabram P-12 College, early in 2018.

He doesn’t believe the kidnapping had an impact on his teaching style but it has made him more passionate about caring for the hurt, anxious and disadvantaged members of society. >>

Day 9 at Wooreen has been 41 years in the making and will be released in November. Former Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mick Miller, who led the investigation, has written the foreword.

>> “The kidnapping trauma has certainly been formative in my life — an experience that is often reflected upon, referred to and has affected the way I deal with some situations,” Rob said.

“I often wonder if there is going to be some other desperado who is going to do something desperate in my presence — it’s not a fear, more of a thought.”

Rob had little contact with his former students for many years or truck driver Robin Smith, who had also been kidnapped, and hailed a hero when he risked his life escaping overnight in dramatic fashion and running to the nearest property 10 km away to raise the alarm.

The lead-up to the 40th anniversary of the event, in February 2017, was the catalyst for Rob to document his experience, in the form of a book Day 9 at Wooreen to be released in November, and reunite with those involved.

“The book has been a major stimulus for me to re-engage. It has taken me the best part of two years to write, some of the students weren’t ready for any formal presentation such as a book until now, they have all been most supportive and encouraging,” Rob said.

He has also developed Kidnapped Teacher Talks with input from colleagues in the wellbeing, counselling, teaching and social works fields. The sessions are

aimed at students in Years 6 to 12 to support young people with their hurt and trauma.

“Young people are captivated by the story, the question of ‘how did you recover from such trauma?’ is not always asked directly but it’s always there,” Rob said.

“I highlight healthy attitudes and principles, those that I was able to apply which contributed to my own wellbeing.”

A

lthough he admits it can be difficult balancing work and other commitments, the 57-year-old says exercise is a vital part of the recipe for living life to the fullest.

Hitting the gym three or four times a week, David said finding half-hour blocks when he can do intensive workouts had proved most beneficial for his health and schedule.

“I work out a bit during the day, it helps me to stay alert and with the social side of the gym there are always new friends,” he said.

“It just helps to slow the ageing process and get the most out of life.”

Driven by a desire to remain active and injury-free into his later years, getting out there and kicking the footy with his grandchildren has been a motivator to stay focused on his fitness goals.

mornings David can be found running alongside other members of the Shepparton Runners Club — that is when he’s not taking the footy field for Mooroopna.

He said the group atmosphere of running club, group workouts and football made it easier to get motivated and keep making progress.

“Just doing something every day helps, and I eat quite healthy but I will still eat something if I want it.

You know you’ll work it off.”

Between football training, walks or runs around Victoria Park Lake with his wife or family, and running weekly fitness classes as part of Get Active Shepparton, a mix of cardio and strength is key to David’s exercise regime.

“The variety is good, it’s all just about keeping active and getting up off the couch and doing something … that’s the main thing.”

With three or four gym sessions a week, David Frizzell focuses on strength exercises to round out his exercise program.

W

hile trying to share the euphoric highs and depressing lows of the sport and the enduring character of Australian athletes, ultimately the director found the best stories were fact, not fiction — and the best endings often come when it’s least expected.

Having grown up on a dairy farm just outside Shepparton, it was a story about a local cycling hero that kick-started Marcus’ love for sharing the hidden side of sporting success and failures, leading to a documentary that has received international recognition.

An insight into the sacrifices, determination and grit needed to compete in the world of cycling, Marcus said the team aspect of cycling captivated him and was ultimately something that truly spoke to him while working on his documentaries Fairless and All For One. “They’re physically and mentally very tough and they’re incredibly hard workers,” he said. “(What I love is) just how much a team of people — eight or nine riders — will work for one person on a given day and how they work and support each other

physically and mentally is incredible.”

Building on more than a decade’s experience in the entertainment industry, Marcus’ first foray into the art form of documentary making was intended as a five-minute look at the cycling comeback of 1988 Seoul Olympian and Shepparton local, Steve Fairless.

However, it wasn’t long before Marcus’ debut film uncovered a much more compelling story and one that ultimately set him on a path of telling the behindthe-scenes story of Australian cycling.

Having been unsuccessful in obtaining a professional cycling contract following his Olympic debut, Steve returned to the Shepparton district to work on his family dairy farm and support his family.

“Steve Fairless’ story was an example of how many great characters are in a place like Shepparton,” Marcus said.

“As we got into it, I discovered he was making a full comeback to international level and followed him over to Slovenia where he completed in his first (UCI) World Masters Championship.”

After Fairless was seen in eight different countries, it was a chance viewing on a Qantas flight that led to Marcus’ involvement in his latest film — All For One. Following the first five years of the GreenEdge Cycling Team, Australia’s first ProTour cycling team, the documentary follows the riders through the ups and downs of the international circuit.

Working alongside Dan Jones, the duo worked on sifting through more than 4000 hours of footage that had been shot across five years, before conducting more than 50 interviews across eight countries.

Travelling to the team’s South African training camp and Spain to capture more interviews, it was a moment with then 23-year-old Columbian cyclist Esteban Chaves that changed the direction of the documentary.

Having suffered a horrific crash at an event in February 2012, the young cyclist had been left with a host of injuries including a broken collarbone, brain swelling and nerve damage, resulting in him being placed in a medically-induced coma and undergoing several surgeries and nerve transplants.

With his recovery ongoing, it was the GreenEdge team that ultimately took a chance on Esteban, signing him to a two-year deal in hopes he would return to his best, something Esteban and his parents were incredibly grateful for, according to Marcus.

“They expressed their gratitude in quite an emotional interview and revealed a lot about him and his hardships as well as talking about the wonderful success and joy,” Marcus said.

“I think after that interview we knew we had something more than just a behindthe-scenes documentary of a sporting team.”

After combing through the hours of footage, Marcus said he and Dan realised they had created vivid and complex characters, with incredible stories and tales of triumph, grit and determination — but were yet to find an ending.

“Then (GreenEdge cyclist) Mathew Hayman won the Paris-Roubaix on his

15th attempt (in 2016) and I got a text from Dan the morning after he won it and he said ‘I think we’ve found the ending for our film’,” Marcus said.

After receiving a “wonderful” response to the release of the 2017 film, which included the documentary receiving a Melbourne International Film Festival People’s Choice Award for Best Documentary, Marcus said he remained in awe of how All For One had come about.

“It was a nice way to start with a local story and then for that to turn into something, a story that was more well known, outside of not only Shepp and Victoria, but around the world,” he said.

With such enduring themes of humanity, including teamwork, leadership and perseverance, Marcus said the content ensured the human element of sport shines through.

“In a cinema you’ve got a captive audience and that feels to me like an honour … You can’t waste that opportunity and you’ve got to make people feel real emotion and deliver a strong message which will make it worth their while being there and giving them their time.”

It’s a feeling Marcus hopes to deliver on his next project, focusing on an emerging group of female footballers from the Tiwi Islands.

“Now because of the AFLW competition coming into play, there’s all these incredibly talented female footballers dreaming of playing at the highest level,” Marcus said.

“We’re looking at following two to three girls over the next 18 months, all three were in Melbourne (earlier this year) …

They have an exciting future ahead but they’ve got their challenges.”

Marcus said the human element of sport continued to captivate his interest, and bringing stories of physical and mental triumph to life was something that brought together lovers of sport and people alike.

“Nelson Mandela said ‘Sport has the potential to change the world’, more than politics can in terms of equality,” he said.

“There’s the ability for sport to play a part in social change.”

difference Three mates in their 70s walk into a bar, two of them have skin cancer. Living Down Under we are aware of the dangers, but it’s not just Maroon supporters who are at risk – with one of the highest rates of the disease in the world, it’s everyone who calls Australia home.

S

kin cancer is five times more common than all other cancers put together and it’s middle-aged and elderly men who are most at risk.

One in 84 men will die from melanoma by age 80, compared to just one in 240 women.

While the number of young people diagnosed with melanoma is decreasing, it is on the rise for middle-aged and elderly men.

But if found early, most skin cancer is not a death sentence.

Dr Stephen Hook from the Shepparton Skin Clinic said the key to successful treatment was early detection.

“The most serious consequences of skin cancer including death are preventable just but doing self-surveillance and having regular skin checks which we recommend annually,” Dr Hook said.

“Skin cancer can occur anywhere including between the toes and fingers, on the soles of the feet and under the jocks and the plumber’s crack.

“It’s often the least worrying looking lesion that is in fact the skin cancer, not

necessarily the big ugly one and that’s why regular skin checks are best done by someone specially trained.”

As well as full body mapping, the Shepparton Skin Clinic can teach people how to do a full skin check and while it is handy to have someone else check those body parts you can’t quite reach, Dr Hook said you can also use mirrors.

“It’s really important to be aware of new skin lesions because four out of five melanomas occur in normal skin and one in five occurs in a mole that has changed,” he said.

Dr Hook is an expert in diagnosis, treatment including biopsy and incision, management and prevention of skin cancers.

“The best way of not dying of skin cancer is early detection and treatment” he said “We do all of the procedures here in our dedicated operating rooms under local, regional anaesthetic and with nitrous oxide gas also available.

“It saves unnecessary hospital admissions and waiting times.”

• Exposure to lots of sun, including those who play sport and work outdoors.

• Recurring sunburns, including all those had as a child and teenager.

• Previous skin cancer.

EARLY LIFE Sir Douglas Nicholls was born on Cummeragunja Aboriginal Mission in NSW in 1906 in Yorta Yorta Country, the land of the totemic long-neck turtle and emu.

At eight years of age, he witnessed his eldest sister Hilda be forcefully separated from his mother, thrown into a car and taken away from the mission.

He left school at 14 and worked as a tar-boy and general hand on sheep stations.

FOOTBALL CAREER The gifted athlete tried out at Carlton Football Club in 1927 but faced severe discrimination.

Carlton trainers refused to give him a rubdown because of his colour and accused him of being ‘smelly’.

It was not until many years later the club publicly apologised.

In 1932 he joined the Fitzroy Football Club where he began changing in a separate change room to his team mates until he was befriended and accepted among the club and the supporters.

He went on to play 54 games with the club.

LIFE AFTER FOOTBALL Sir Doug retired from football in 1939 and was ordained as a Church of Christ pastor six years later.

He began working with disadvantaged Aboriginal people in the early 1940s through the Aboriginal Advancement League.

In 1941 he received a call-up notice and joined the AIF 29th Battalion, but the Fitzroy police soon requested his discharge to help with the Aborigines living in Fitzroy.

In 1976 he was appointed Governor of South Australia but this was unfortunately

short-lived due to a stroke in 1977.

AWARDS Sir Doug was the first Aboriginal to receive the honour of Victorian Father of the Year in 1962 and to be knighted, receiving the Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1972.

A LEGACY Sir Doug lost his beloved wife, Lady Gladys, in 1981 after 39 years of marriage and he died in 1988 in Mooroopna.

In 2007 a statue of the couple was unveiled in Parliament Gardens in Melbourne — it became the first memorial sculpture dedicated to Aboriginal leaders in the city.

The annual AFL Indigenous round was renamed after him in 2016 and this year the federal electorate of Murray (which contains Shepparton) was renamed after him and Lady Gladys.

2018 marks the 10th year of Shepparton’s Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch, a powerful event that lifts awareness of prostate cancer in the community and has raised $1.7 million towards the cause.

One major legacy of the event is the funding of a prostate cancer specialist nurse at GV Health, in addition to hundreds of men every year taking the time to think about the disease — the signs, its impact and where they can go for

help. With prostate cancer being the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men, and more than 3000 men dying of prostate cancer every year, these conversations are essential.

hris McPherson was one of those men, but he was much more than a statistic.

Ten years ago in a marquee at the Shepparton Showgrounds he shared his battle with prostate cancer at what would become the country’s first Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch, which this year will be held on August 24.

“You could hear a pin drop,” Shepparton Biggest Ever Blokes’ Lunch chair Shane O’Sullivan said.

The next year the event moved to Eastbank and ever since 700 blokes have gathered to talk frankly about health each August.

That same year Shane was diagnosed with prostate cancer and Chris interviewed him and founding committee member Laurie Gleeson at the event.

“You have the two side effects of having a prostate removed and I had no effect with erections and with holding your bladder, while Chris and Laurie were the complete opposite,” Shane said.

“It was pretty confronting for the guys and my family — I remember my now son-in-law, but my then daughter’s boyfriend, was in the crowd and he doesn’t want to know what I did 10 days after my operation with his future mother-in-law.

“But they need to know and you have to give it to them between the eyes.”

Laurie and Chris both died in 2015, but Shane and the committee have continued their legacy — raising $1.7 million over the past decade, much of which has stayed locally to fund a prostate cancer specialist nurse at GV Health.

With hundreds of men in one room talking about prostate cancer the event has started a conversation and Shane said he hopes it prompts men to get their annual check-up.

“It’s shifted away from a boozy long lunch and now people are getting the message of why we’re here,” he said.

“Unfortunately there are still a lot of guys who get it — but they will die with it, not die of it, because it’s been treated.

“Every 12 months have a blood test — you can have a blood test today but it can start growing tomorrow. Early detection is the secret.”

Today there are 13 Biggest Blokes’ Lunches held throughout Victoria, southern NSW and Tasmania, while the Shepparton event has grown to also support Bowel Cancer Australia and partially fund a bowel cancer specialist nurse at GV Health.

im Reid was 54 when a regular medical check-up led to a prostate cancer diagnosis.

“The doctor rang my wife one day and said there was a bit of a concern with one of my blood tests and to come in and see him some time,” Jim said.

“From my way home from work I popped in and he said there was something wrong but he would do another series of blood tests and get a second opinion.

“There were no symptoms or anything so I was very lucky that I had that series of tests done with the doctor.”

In those days Shepparton did not have a resident urologist and Jim was placed on a waiting list to see a visiting specialist.

Five months passed and nothing happened.

“I rang the hospital to see where I was on the waiting list and they said within five months you might see someone,” he said.

“I didn’t get to see a specialist in Shepparton, I went back to my GP and between the two of us we decided that something else had to be done.”

Had Jim waited, it might have been too late.

“I went to see a private urologist over in Albury and within two months I was in having a prostate cancer operation,” he said.

Because the tumour was really aggressive had I left it, it would have escaped outside the prostate gland and then it would have gotten into my bones.

“They removed the whole prostate gland and in them days it was quite a big operation.

“We got over that and I recovered but unfortunately there wasn’t enough cancerous tissue taken away from beside the prostate gland and I developed another bit of cancer in the same area, but six years later. Then I had radiotherapy to get rid of that.”

Since then Jim has been cancer-free.

In a time when men simply did not talk about prostate cancer, the diagnosis hit Jim hard.

“I thought cancer was an old man’s game, I didn’t think it was for young ones like me who were still at work,” he said.

“I remember getting the diagnosis and just sitting at my desk at work and thinking ‘I can’t have cancer, I shouldn’t have cancer at my age’.”

Jim said it was a time when scientists were yet to discover the hereditary link.

“I left Scotland when I was 20 and I’ve since found out that my father had it and my mother’s father had it,” he said.

“Had I known then that my grandfather and my father had it then I would have made a point of being checked.

“I’ve given this information to my daughter; I have two grandsons and I’ve told her that they must be checked at 40.”

Not long after finishing his treatment a fellow prostate cancer survivor and Shepparton doctor rallied local men with similar experiences together.

“There was about four or five of us who rocked up and from that day we decided

to form a an alliance and that’s when the Shepparton Prostate Support Group was born — that was about 20-odd years ago,” Jim said.

“Now that I’m better and the guys in the support group are better too we have started up these support groups to try and get guys to be aware that you need to see the doctor.

“It’s important that we get the message out there and we certainly can’t afford to not do it.”

Jim’s experience inspired him to speak out and encourage other men to open up about their health.

“When I was young and growing up in Scotland there were people dying all over the place but we didn’t know why, nobody talked about — it was a death sentence but now it’s not,” he said.

“In them days it wasn’t publicised the way it is now.

“I would like men to be aware that it’s not selective, anyone can get prostate cancer.

“If they know any immediate family has had the disease go to the GP and have a check-up, it’s a simple blood test at the start and if there is anything there then any good GP will bring a urologist into the equation and between them they will do biopsies and you’ll get a diagnosis early in life.

“If they don’t know of any immediate family, at age 50 to 55 demand a check from the GP and if they won’t do it go to a GP that will.”

WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER? Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells develop in the prostate.

These abnormal cells can continue to multiply in an uncontrolled way and sometimes spread outside the prostate to other parts of the body.

It is generally a slow-growing disease and the majority of men with low-grade prostate cancer live for many years without symptoms, the cancer spreading or becoming life-threatening. However, high-grade disease spreads quickly and can be lethal.

The facts In Australia prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men.

THE SYMPTOMS In the early stages, there may be no symptoms.

But as the cancer advances, some symptoms might include: »» Feeling the frequent or sudden need to urinate. »» Finding it difficult to urinate (for example, trouble starting or not being able to urinate when the feeling is there or poor urine flow). »» Discomfort when urinating. »» Finding blood in urine or semen. »» Pain in the lower back, upper thighs or hips.

Experiencing these symptoms may not mean you have prostate cancer, but if you experience any of the above, go to the doctor.

More than 3000 men die of prostate cancer in Australia every year.

More men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer.

THE RISK FACTORS Factors that are most strongly linked to an increased chance of developing prostate cancer: »» Age: The chance of developing prostate cancer increases with age. The risk of getting the disease by the age of 75 is one in seven men and by the age of 85 this increases to one in five. »» Family history: Those with a first degree male relative with prostate cancer have a higher chance of developing it than men with no family history. This risk increases again if more than one male relative has the disease and if those relatives were diagnosed when young.

GET TESTED Men over the age of 50, or 40 with a family history, should talk to their doctor about testing for prostate cancer as part of their annual health check-up.

A doctor will usually do a blood test called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) and/or a physical examination known as a Digital Rectal Examination (DRE). »» PSA: The result shows whether there is an increase in this specific protein.

Depending on the result further investigation by a specialist may be required.

A high PSA test does not necessarily mean cancer as other diseases can also cause a higher than normal result. »» DRE: Because of the location of the prostate the doctor inserts a gloved, lubricated finger into the rectum to check the size of the prostate and assess if there are any abnormalities.

A normal DRE result does not rule out prostate cancer.

DIAGNOSIS If your tests show you may be at risk of prostate cancer the next step is a biopsy.

A biopsy is the only way a firm diagnosis can be made. A urologist removes small samples of tissue from the prostate using very thin, hollow needles guided by an ultrasound. The prostate is either accessed through the rectum (transrectal) or the perineum (transperineal), which is the area between the anus and the scrotum. The tissue is sent to a pathologist to identity whether the cells are cancerous or benign.

For the past four years Sonia Strachan has been a wealth of support for those affected by prostate cancer in the Goulburn Valley. Don magazine sat down with the GV Health prostate cancer specialist nurse to raise awareness about the cancer that kills 3000 Australian men every year.

DON: HOW DID YOUR ROLE AS A PROSTATE CANCER SPECIALIST NURSE BEGIN? SONIA: This came about back in 2012; the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia got money from Movember to run a pilot project and there was funding for 13 nurses. GV Health applied but missed out, as did lots of others.

In 2014 the Federal Government came on board and funded 14 positions. Again GV Health applied and we missed out again but our local Big Blokes’ Lunch, Chris McPherson and his committee really wanted to have a local prostate cancer nurse. They really saw the need and the benefits of it.

Chris had had all his treatment in Melbourne and he had a nurse and he thought: ‘this had been okay for me, I’ve been able to go down there, but what happens locally to other people?’. They approached GV Health and developed this partnership where they keep their money locally from the lunch to fund the position.

DON: WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HAVE A SPECIALIST PROSTATE NURSE? SONIA: I think it’s really important. The (medical) specialists only have a certain amount of time they can have with a patient. Especially locally we have some specialists here but others are coming and going — so who do they (patients) call in the meantime? Who can actually sit down again with them and go over exactly what was said?

At the moment if you’re having major prostate cancer surgery or need radiotherapy you have to go out of the region — who helps you do that? It’s really important to have a central point of contact locally especially, in a regional centre.

DON: WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE DO FOR MEN WHO KNOW LITTLE ABOUT PROSTATE HEALTH? SONIA: Part of the role is about community awareness. I speak to lots of groups about that and it’s really getting the message out there.

It’s not just about prostate cancer — we need to be going to the GP on a regular basis. You should be going once a year, you should be getting your bloods checked and having conversations about what screening you need to be having for cancer and also your mental health as well.

Don’t wait for something to happen, for something to go wrong, actually get there on a regular basis.

DON: WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF THE SHEPPARTON PROSTATE SUPPORT GROUP? SONIA: It’s just good to be able to sit down with people who have had similar circumstances and be able to share that and maybe be able to point people in the right direction. It’s that network and companionships, and partners can come as well.

Zee Wan completed her oncology fellowship in the United States after her advanced training in Singapore. Zee Wan has had more than 15 years of experience as an oncologist looking after patients with cancer.

Javier completed the basic physician training in Melbourne, followed by the clinical diploma of palliative care in St. Vincent’s hospital. He received the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2015 as medical oncologist and currently is appointed as the Clinical Director of West Hume Integrated Cancer Services. Dr Torres also holds a position as Senior Lecturer with the Department of Rural Health, University of Melbourne.
