MISSION

The McNay Art Museum engages a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts.

VISION

The McNay will be San Antonio’s place of belonging, where the Museum’s expanding community is reflected in transformational art experiences.

CORE VALUES

PILLARS OF OUR COMMUNITY

The past year has brought significant leadership changes to the Museum, putting into sharp focus the gratitude I have to work alongside dedicated, influential figures who are pillars of the community. Last month, we were saddened by the passing of our dear friend J. Bruce Bugg Jr. A passionate trustee of the McNay, Bruce’s commitment to the Museum’s success stemmed from a genuine belief in our mission and the importance of the arts in our community. I am grateful for his generous spirit, visionary leadership, and kindness that will continue to inspire the work we do.

We are fortunate to have leaders who, for decades, have served this institution with conviction and passion. Following his twentieth anniversary with the Museum, we bid a bittersweet farewell to René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs, who will retire in September 2025. Across two decades, his curatorial vision elevated the McNay to new heights. I am grateful for his impactful work and congratulate him on this wellearned milestone.

While we reflect on leaders who have profoundly shaped the McNay, we look to our future with optimism. This year, we welcome two new colleagues. Elizabeth Mitchell, PhD joins as Curator of Prints & Drawings and Stacy Hicks Herr joins as Head of Development. A dynamic educator and scholar, Elizabeth’s vision will provide another viewpoint to complement already strong curatorial voices at the McNay, which you will discover in her bold exhibition, Do Not Meddle With It!!: Print Censorship in 19th Century Paris, on view through December. Leading our Development team, Stacy brings more than two decades of fundraising and strategic leadership experience to the McNay, with a proven track record of building transformational donor relationships and driving significant revenue growth for mission-driven not-for-profits. These two vital positions will be instrumental in advancing the Museum’s mission and securing a vibrant future.

At our core, the McNay remains committed to bringing people together. Our dedicated staff and leadership continue to create exhibitions, programs, and spaces that inspire connection, learning, and understanding. I encourage you to visit and experience firsthand the meaningful work we’re doing to enrich lives through the power of art.

I hope the following pages offer you a sense of connection and ignite your curiosity. You’ll find upcoming exhibitions, Museum news, a new lookback section, and more. From our fall banner exhibition Sandy Skoglund: Enchanting Nature to La Feria: A Celebration of Public Space, from the book release of Counterpoint: 20th-Century Art from the John M. Parker Jr. Collection to new acquisitions, from the debut of our peacock mascot to the return of McNay Summer Art Camp, we will continue to lead with courage, compassion, and the conviction that art matters.

“ “

Throughout my career, I’ve remained most interested in working and collaborating with living artists. I’m grateful to the McNay Art Museum for trusting my vision and supporting impactful artists that are experimenting, taking risks, and creating art that is meaningful to the time we live in. It’s been an honor to collaborate with so many talented people during my career at the McNay. I want to thank my wonderful colleagues, artistic partners, and the San Antonio community for your support over the past two decades.

IN MEMORIAM

The McNay Art Museum mourns the passing of J. Bruce Bugg Jr., a devoted trustee, generous patron, and friend to the Museum, who passed away on August 6, 2025. He was a trustee from 2001 to 2012, fulfilling his first three terms, and was then reelected in 2020.

A respected leader in business, public service, and the arts, Bruce made an enduring impact on the cultural landscape of San Antonio. As Chairman and Trustee of The Tobin Endowment, he carried forward the vision of Robert L. B. Tobin, helping to amplify The Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts at the McNay. His support strengthened the Museum’s mission of engaging a diverse community in the discovery and enjoyment of the visual arts.

Bruce’s belief in the power of art to inspire, transform, and unite was evident in all he did. His guidance and generosity have left an indelible mark not only on the McNay but on institutions throughout our city and beyond. We are grateful for his immense contributions, which continue to inspire our community and will have a lasting impact on future generations of artists and art patrons.

“With vision, generosity, and an unwavering belief in the McNay’s mission, Bruce helped shape our Museum’s growth and impact,” said J. David Oppenheimer, President of the McNay’s Board of Trustees. “We honor his extraordinary contributions with profound gratitude.”

From McNay sweaters and McNay peacock mugs to prints by San Antonio-based artists, there is something for everyone. This fall, we are excited to present new publications on our shelves. Counterpoint explores the vision of John M. Parker Jr., a prominent Texas art collector known for his patronage of minimalism, conceptualism, and other avant-garde art. Parker’s 2017 gift and 2023 bequest position the McNay as an important center for the study of minimalist and conceptualist printmaking with more than 500 objects from artists, including Jasper Johns, Agnes Martin, and Donald Judd.

Sandy Skoglund: Enchanting Nature, published by Damiani Books in collaboration with the McNay and Paci Contemporary Gallery—and bearing the same title as the McNay’s exhibition—serves not only as the catalogue but also provides photographic documentation of our fall banner exhibition. Sandy Skoglund: Enchanting Nature

September 11, 2025–February 1, 2026

Tobin Exhibition Galleries

Sandy Skoglund: Enchanting Nature expands on the breadth of Sandy Skoglund’s artistic practice as a sculptor, installation artist, and photographer. Merging a variety of mediums, Skoglund creates tableaux constructed with unconventional materials that she then photographs, incorporating live models within swarms of fabricated objects or sculptured animals. Skoglund’s work examines the conflict between the human-made world and the natural environment and the resulting paradoxes created by the ongoing dualities of contemporary life.

The McNay’s commitment to the artist and her body of artworks spans over two decades, including exhibitions and acquisitions. Enchanting Nature is a deeply-rooted collaboration between the artist and the Museum, bringing together two important installations— Radioactive Cats (1989) and Revenge of the Goldfish (1981)—with a neverbefore-exhibited installation of Fresh Hybrid (2008). In addition to the sculptural works, Skoglund pushes her approach to exhibiting photographs by creating for the first time monumental wallpaper enlargements of her artworks. Complementing the exhibition is an AT&T Lobby wallpaper installation with imagery drawn from Skoglund’s iconic 1981 photograph Revenge of the Goldfish Both exhibitions merge photographic imagery and gallery architecture, offering an entirely new way of experiencing Sandy Skoglund’s art.

Sandy Skoglund: Enchanting Nature is organized by René Paul Barilleaux, Head of Curatorial Affairs, with Sandy Skoglund.

PRESENTING SPONSORSHIP MESSAGE

At Bank of America, we believe that investing in the arts has a positive impact on our lives. Our support aims to bridge our shared history, create opportunities, and uplift communities. We are proud to partner with the McNay Art Museum to help bring the Sandy Skoglund: Enchanting Nature exhibition to the San Antonio community this fall.

Enchanting Nature is deeply influenced by the intersection of culture and nature, two themes we also find intertwined in the character of our vibrant city. Skoglund uses three forms of artistic practices — sculpture, installation, and photography — to create an immersive experience using unconventional materials. Her contemporary art projects us into an energetic world of illusion and reality by using vibrant colors and everyday objects.

As a San Antonian, I take immense pride in our city’s exceptional art and cultural institutions. In my role as President of Bank of America San Antonio, I recognize the profound impact corporate partnerships have on our cultural landscape. From sponsoring exhibitions to funding art conservation to community partnerships, we remain committed to delivering art experiences and educational and access programs. That commitment is also behind our Museums on Us® program, offering Bank of America cardholders free admission to five San Antonio museums, including the McNay, during the first full weekend of each month.

Investing in the arts helps build connections, creates opportunities, and preserves art’s rich cultural legacy. Our city’s investment in its arts scene highlights the importance of making the arts accessible, and it is inspiring to see that commitment compounded by support from Bank of America.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to the McNay who has championed the arts in the Alamo City for over seventy years.

Sincerely,

Do Not Meddle With It!!: Print Censorship in 19th Century Paris

August 21 – December 7, 2025

Butt Paperworks Gallery

Drawn primarily from the McNay’s collection of works on paper, this exhibition highlights the extraordinary creativity of printmakers in 19th-century France, a time when we rarely consider that printed images were subject to censorship laws. The exhibition features critical images by Honoré Daumier and Édouard Manet, as well as works by Pablo Picasso, José Clemente Orozco, and José Guadalupe Posada, who were inspired by how artists such as Manet and Daumier dealt with government censorship and used caricature to make protest art. More recent works by activist artists, including the Guerrilla Girls and Donald Moffett, add a contemporary lens to the presentation.

Do Not Meddle With It!!: Print Censorship in 19th Century Paris is organized for the McNay Art Museum by Elizabeth Kathleen Mitchell, PhD, Curator of Prints and Drawings.

Support is provided by the Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation of 1992.

McNAY SUMMER ART CAMP

July marked the long-awaited return of McNay Summer Art Camp. The McNay was delighted to welcome children ages 7-12 to campus to experience the wonders of art while building lasting memories with new friends.

Campers were immersed in creativity across the one-week programs. Week One focused on build-a-book, which explored the art of bookmaking, creating zines, comics, and illustrations. Week Two centered on Eco-Build, where guest instructor and featured artist Raul Rene Gonzalez guided campers on turning everyday materials into extraordinary 3D sculptures inspired by the McNay’s collection and the spring banner exhibition Sport and Spectator.

We look forward to continuing to offer children a space to create, explore, and connect through the power of art. We are inspired by the next generation of artists and art lovers! Learn more at mcnayart.org/camp.

MEET JESSE, THE McNAY’S MASCOT

This past spring, the McNay debuted its vibrant mascot: Jesse, the peacock. A nod to Marion Koogler McNay, the mascot symbolizes our founder’s love for peacocks, which are said to have roamed the grounds and are adorned throughout the residence’s design.

Jesse made his splashy entrance at Family Day, which coincided with the Spectator spring banner exhibition, alongside fellow mascots from across San Antonio. Joined by friends like the H-E-Buddy, UTSA’s Roadrunner, and others, Jesse stepped into the spotlight with exuberant team spirit and delighted guests of all ages. Catch him at select events to see his colorful, take-up-space flamboyance that brings a part of our founding story to life.
