LETTER

Welcome to the enchanting “Greater Capay Valley” — or Western Yolo County. I am a fifth-generation descendant of Scottish gold-mining pioneers to Yolo County — this place means a lot to me. Many of the people still living in this area are descended from pioneer ancestors like mine, but also from the 8,000-year habitation of the native Hill Patwin, so this area has a rich history that might not be visible if you didn’t know to look for it.

My 20-year-old great grandfather, “Doc” Wyatt Godfrey Duncan, came to California in 1850 on a cattle drive from southwestern Missouri with his 12-year-old “kid brother Bill” — a fact I heard often from my cowboy father when we kids whined about having to herd cattle and sheep on a blisteringly hot summer day filled with dust, flies and rattlesnakes. “Do you think they whined?” he’d ask … to which we four all agreed they must have.

Wyatt and Bill panned for gold at Mud Springs the winter of 1850 — which today is El Dorado town — and then found their way to the newly available Mexican land grant of Rancho Canada de Capay — essentially the whole of Capay Valley.

They were joined by others like them, such as the storied Stephens brothers, who also amassed 8,000 acres of farm and ranch land, making their fortune mostly in premium sheep and also starting the Bank of Woodland. They built the first adobe home in the area and their land is still farmed by family as the Historic Oakdale Ranch on State Highway 16 between Madison and Esparto.

Until the 1960s, we all went to the one- and two-room school houses dotting the area until they were unified with the Esparto district. Two such school houses still stand — one is Canon School between Brooks and Guinda and one is Clover School on County Road 19 between CR 87 and Highway 505.

As you drive around here today, you will see many orchards, mostly almond and olive, and vineyards, some dating to one hundred fifty years ago, a long history that brought many Greeks, Italians and Japanese to the area. The grain lands brought many Germany dry-farmers.

The town of Guinda attracted a large number of African Americans after the Civil War, and the farm labor needs attracted many migrant workers, many of whom stayed. Our schools were never segregated and we were a very multi-cultural community — all students funneled into Esparto High, the second oldest in Yolo County.

I have been researching and writing about all this for the last decade, culminating in a 440-page book titled “The History and Stories of the Capay Valley,” published in 2015.

We annually celebrate our history with Black History-Multicultural Day on the second Saturday of February at historic Guinda Grange Hall, and the Almond Festival on the last Sunday of February throughout the whole valley. Both include live music, craft booths, BBQ and historical displays. Come celebrate this magical place with us — and drop by the history-and-book booth I always have at each event.

CELEBRATING CAPAY VALLE Y’S FORGOT TEN HIS TORY F

or most of its history, Guinda has been remote. Nestled midway up the narrow Capay Valley, no one gets there by accident, and historically, that’s how Guinda’s residents have liked it. With fertile soil in the valley and cheap land in the hills overlooking Cache Creek, homesteaders came to Guinda with purpose.

In the late 1800’s the Southern Pacific Railroad bought the land and laid out a town on 1,300 acres.

The company even chose the town’s name, which is the Spanish word for the tart cherry tree. Once the plans were made, they set out to entice people to settle the area.

People were drawn in by advertisements for affordable plots, and by 1913 the rail-

road had turned Guinda into the trading center of upper Capay Valley. The town boasted a hotel, a barbershop and a general store, among other businesses. Some of these buildings are still standing today.

Among the people drawn to Guinda by the railroad’s advertisements and the opportunity to homestead in theCapay Valley were African Americans seeking a refuge from the racism they faced in other parts of the country. In the Capay Valley they could carve out their own piece of California, where they could own

land and operate businesses on their own terms.

These settlers, some of them freed slaves or the children of slaves, began buying land in Guinda in the 1890’s.

Green Berry Logan, the son of an African American woman and a white father, was the first of these settlers in Guinda. He was followed by other African American families, like the Simpsons, Hacketts, Hemphills and the Logans.

These families lived alongside each other and often intermarried.

Logan’s niece, Hattie Logan Simpson,

married Charles Henry Simpson, an orchardist who started Guinda’s brass band.

When there were enough children for a schoolhouse the settlers built Summit School in the hills.

Twenty children of different races came together in one classroom and were taught by three white teachers, who traveled up to the schoolhouse in a buggy. Children walked a footbridge built over Cache Creek to get to their classroom. The school operated from 1895 to 1912.

When the railroad station closed Guinda quieted down. The

boom was over, but many of the farmers remained, including some of the descendants of the early African American settlers.

Several of those early African American settlers, including Green Berry Logan and Charles Henry Simpson, are buried in the Logan Cemetery, which overlooks the valley.

As time passed these families and their stories were mostly forgotten outside of the Capay Valley. Guinda native Clarence Van Hook found a way to bring them back.

Guinda’s Black History Month event has been hosted at the Grange hall every year since the celebration began.

Guinda has celebrated the history of the African American homesteaders every second Saturday in February at the historic Western Grange Hall, located just off of Highway 16.

Van Hook not only founded the event, but has been involved ever since.

The event grew over the years, but has continued to be held at the Grange Hall. Luna Vista Rotary Club of Woodland joined Van Hook, and Rotarian Dave Reed has been involved with planning the event for five years now.

“It’s a really fun, feelgood event,” Reed says. He says that he has enjoyed

seeing people with ties to the community attend and share their experiences growing up in Guinda. Reed says that in past years the Grange Hall filled with as many as 150 to 200 people.

Several years ago, Van Hook advocated for the event to expand from solely a black history month event to include a multi-cultural celebration in order to include the many other cultures who have lived in Yolo County. In previous years this outreach has involved groups like Latinx dance and mariachi troupes and Native American dancers.

As the event grew they also incorporated formal speakers

into the schedule. Last year UC Davis Chancellor Gary May spoke, and this year they have a speaker representing Yolo County’s historical Japanese American citizens.

Since its inception the celebration has offered attendees a free lunch, provided by the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation. They provide the meat, and Luna Vista Rotary does the grilling. Attendees are invited to bring along a dish to share.

This year Guinda’s Black History and Multicultural Celebration will take place on Saturday, Feb. 8. As with every year, it will be free and open to anyone who wishes to attend.

The good times shared on a patio with friends and family, and the atomic number of copper, an important element in the distillation process.

Since their opening, the Boone family have found themselves serving patrons stopping through Winters on the way to Napa, couples grabbing a drink before going out to one of Winters’ many restaurants and groups hosting charity events.

Visitors to Patio 29’s tasting room can sample small flights of their signature drinks, order cocktails and purchase bottles of their handcrafted spirits to enjoy at home.

They can also see plenty of shining copper through the large viewing windows that run behind the bar. From there imbibers can look into the distilling room and check out the rows of stills with their large bellies and small round windows. They might even catch a glimpse of Adam, the head distiller, at work.

To get a closer look at the equipment and an explanation of the process, patrons can sign up for a private tour with Adam.

“It’s essentially an educational walk through,” says Eric, who runs the bar most afternoons. During the tour Adam explains the distilling process from beginning to end, and the hour ends with a hosted tasting session in the distilling room.

There, mounted on the wall, is a little plastic display case. Inside you will see several pieces of candy.

Harmon’s “Refreshing Hot Cinnamon Fire Pix” came in little waxed paper envelopes, printed with solid stripes and an anthropomorphic toothpick who emotes as much of a devil-may-care attitude as a toothpick possibly can.

“STOP AIR POLLUTION,” a wrapper from the 1970’s proclaims, “FLAVOR YOUR BREATH.” The Fire Pix were a product by Bud Harmon, who manufactured them in McCook, Nebraska from the 1960’s until his retirement nearly half a century later. While they can’t be purchased in stores anymore, their spirit lives on in a distilled spirit sold at Patio 29.

Jeff Boone, owner of Patio 29, is Harmon’s grandson. He has fond memories of visiting his grandfather’s candy laboratory. It was located in Harmon’s basement, and was filled with different pieces of candy making equipment.

Jeff inherited his grandfather’s entrepreneurial spirit, and it’s one which he shares with his wife, Anita, and their two sons Adam and Eric.

Together the Boones opened Patio 29, their first joint business venture last summer in Winters at 728 Railroad Ave. The name came from two sources of inspiration:

success with their line of flavored whiskies inspired by his great-grandfather’s candied toothpick flavors.

So far their cinnamon and orange flavors, both bottled with a label that borrows images from the Harmon’s Fire Pix logo, have been their most popular flavors.

Eric describes these whiskies as, “a cocktail in a bottle.” These 70 proof whiskies are made with minimal sweeteners and natural flavoring. Eric says that this keeps them from being cloyingly sweet.

“The whiskey definitely comes through while still having that nice kind of subtle flavoring to it,” Eric says.

This is how the Boones like to approach the distilling process, by repurposing well-known spirits to create small batches with unique flavors.

Their gin is crafted in the American style, which is unlike the London dry gin most people are accustomed to. Patio 29’s gin doesn’t have those piney, juniper notes that typify a London gin. Instead it has a distinctly floral impression, which comes from the locally sourced lavender used in the distilling process.

Their vodka is also made with locally sourced pro-

duce, in this case corn, wheat, barley and rye. The Boones want their products to be easily discernible from what consumers might find on a shelf in a market, and crafting their spirits with Yolo County produce makes that possible.

Of all their spirits, Eric says their grappa is the most distinctly regional. He calls it an expression of Yolo County, because you can’t find the exact ingredients they use in their spirits anywhere else. They use freshly pressed grapes directly from Turkovich Winery, which Eric says gives the grappa a sweeter, less aggressive flavor.

In the coming year Patio 29 will continue to grow and explore new adventures in creative distilling. They are adding a rum to their menu, which will be their first spirit made completely in house, along with more flavored whiskies. Right now they are looking at adding black cherry, mint julep and lemon maple to their line of Harmon Hot Pix inspired spirits.

With Yolo Traders Bistro, Goyal saw yet another opportunity.

“After my 4th or 5th time at YTB, I talked to Gabe and his wife, Alejandra, about coming aboard and bringing in some capital to their restaurant. I knew things weren’t going as well as they had hoped from a business perspective, but I was positive we could turn things around.”

Creating a business partnership was a no brainer on both sides. For the Ibarras, it meant that new life would be injected into a restaurant they had dedicated their lives and staked their family’s fortune to. For Goyal, it meant aiding a family he saw much of himself in and investing in Yolo County, an area that has remained deep in his heart throughout his life.

After a handshake and a toast, a new partnership was born.

“It’s only been a few months now, but this is truly a dream come true,” says Goyal. “My only goal in moving back to Davis was to raise my sons in the same neighborhood I grew up in and bring new jobs to the community through my company. I never would have imagined running into a restaurant like YTB and a couple like Gabe and Alejandra. I can only hope this will be the beginning of something greater for the community.”

In the beginning ...

A 1930s Yolo County crop report recorded just 1,342 acres of land devoted to wine grape production.

That number has skyrocketed to more than 13,000 harvested acres, with merlot and chardonnay filling the top hauls. Wine grapes are the third highest money-making crop — surpassed only by processing tomatoes and almonds.

Today, with more than 30 wineries in our region, and UC Davis’ proximity to Yolo County vineyards (and its own experimental vineyards), locals and visitors have access to the leading wine research in the world. Add talented winemakers to the mix, and there’s a reason Yolo County is on the wine map.
