Officer Kyle Shadman was named Officer of the Year. Fire Chief Brad L. Lopez said the pandemic changed the way that public safety officials and first responders interacted with the community in 2021. However, Winters Fire Department didn’t let the challenges that COVID presented prevent them from providing service to Winters

or other areas of the state in need to support. Lopez recognized volunteer reserve firefighter Aaron Mendoza as the 2021 Firefighter of the Year. Mendoza joined Winters Fire as a Winters High School student in 2018.

This year, the traditional Winters High School Alumni Baseball Game is being revived via a Senior Capstone Project. Winters High School senior Matt Moore said he was inspired to bring the tradition back to the field following a discussion in his Explore class. Moore said the original idea was to host a homerun derby. However, the reality of finding success for participants was a challenge. “We realized if we

did it on the little league field everyone would hit a home run, but on the varsity field no one would,” Moore said. “We thought the alumni game would be a good idea to bring back, and a fun event that everyone could participate in.” The WHS Alumni Baseball Game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 at the WHS varsity baseball field. Teams will be odd graduate year vs even graduate year. The $75 player registration fee includes a T-shirt jersey (either black or red) that

Express staff writer Since WWII, AFS Intercultural Programs (AFS) have facilitated thousands of students’ life-changing travels abroad. With an active AFS presence in the community, thanks to the late Bobbie Greenwood, this nonprofit is now seeking new host families to keep the cultural exchange between Winters and the world thriving. AFS is on a mission to “create a more just

and peaceful world.” They do this by sending American students abroad while bringing in students from foreign countries to experience the US for a year. A volunteer-based organization, AFS relies on local families to ‘host’ the foreign exchanged students for the duration of their stay. “To be a host, there’s a pretty extensive background check, and the organization checks your house

By Crystal Apilado Public Safety and City officials gathered on Friday to honor top personnel and to celebrate the achievements of Winters public safety teams in 2021. “Our police officers, firefighters and support staff have risen to the challenge, and remain focused on delivering exceptional service to our community here in Winters, as well as the communities throughout California,” Police Chief John P. Miller said in his opening remarks.

Unsatisfactory tree conditions are causing the delay of one of the newest parks from opening to the community. Three Oaks Park, within the Stones Throw’s subdivision in northwest Winters, was expected to enter a 90-day maintenance period this month, the last step before it would open to the public. However, according to City Manager Kathleen

Salguero Trepa, the park was deemed not ready to enter the maintenance period in April, as planned, after an inspection in late March by city staff and an arborist found conditions unsatisfactory. Construction of the 10-acre park is the responsibility of Stones Throw’s current developer, Homes By Towne, although the park was originally planned in 2005 with the original developer, who has since exited.
