FFA shifts focus to agriculture career fields

By Aaron Geerts Express staff writer Gone are the days of the Winters FFA being known only for judging livestock. In fact, the age-old notion doesn’t scratch the surface of its modern-day offerings.

That’s why now, in 2022, the Winters High School students and teachers give a nod to their past roots and talk about the Winters FFA as it is today.

It’s no secret that Winters isn’t a bustling livestock community. When one looks around, it’s all fields, orchards and vineyards. This fact inspired WHS teachers Kayla Roberts and Donnie Whitworth to work on shifting the local chapter’s focus to teaching students about the surrounding agricultural industry.

Beyond that are a myriad classes designed to bolster leadership, confidence and knowledge of practical skills that can be easily transferred into career opportunities.

“We have ‘Introduction to Agriculture’ which is an introduction to all of the pathways of our program.

We’ve broken that class down into a few units, there’s welding and woodworking, a leadership and public speaking unit and plant and animal science,” Roberts said.

“The students get a taste of everything and get to decide what’s best for them.”

“I saw what was available and wanted to run with it. Es-

pecially getting involved as an officer — competing, speech competitions, going to the fair and raising animals. I wanted to check all those box-

“Welding’s my favorite thing, with stick welding definitely being my favorite type.

It’s always fun and I just wish class periods were longer so I could weld more,” said Bianca Dyer-Gonzalez, a sophomore and chapter reporter. “There’s so much more than you think there is. This is my second year of FFA and I haven’t done a single thing with animals. There’s so

FFA historically offers agricultural pathway

By Aaron Geerts Express staff writer For years the Future Farmers of America (FFA – and now known as the National FFA Organization) has helped cultivate strong leadership skills and work ethic in Winters High School students. In celebration of National FFA Week, it’s important to reflect on the local history of this grass roots organization and how it fits seamlessly into the ag-centric community we call home.

In the Official FFA Manual, it’s self-described as a dynamic youth organization within agricultural education that prepares students for premier leadership, personal growth and career success. After its official formation in 1928, California received National Charter Number Four and never looked back.

agricultural experience and then the classroom,” said Kayla Roberts, WHS ag teacher. “We like to say it’s the hand, the head and the heart. SAE is hands-on, the brain is the classroom and the heart is the FFA.” As the FFA coursed through the country, it finally touched down and established itself in Winters in 1955. Found predominately in agriculturally based communities, the town took to the organization like a pig to mud.

“I grew up in Rocklin, I didn’t have ag-ed in high school. You only have it in schools that have a demand for it in the community,” explained Roberts. “We like to say we’re a pretty traditional FFA chapter. We teach traditional pathways here, we’re very active in our local community and pretty much check all the boxes.

We have judging teams, speaking teams, hands-on classes at our farm here — so in that sense we’re very traditional.”

While most of WHS’s classes take place on the main campus, the FFA and ag classes take place at the Joe Aguiar Agriculture Department at the corner of Moody Slough Road and Niemann Street. A building constructed in 1980, it’s been the hub of Winters’ FFA initiatives for years. It’s comprised of classrooms, animal stalls, farm plots of various types of agriculture, and a tractor load of tools and equipment for which students can learn.

teaching the younger generation about agriculture so we still have an ag industry in 20 to 30 years,” Roberts said, breaking down a more accurate portrayal of FFA in Winters beyond only doing livestock judging. “We want to train these students how to work in the local agriculture industries and teach them about the commodities produced in Yolo County so they can technically go into the workforce out of highs school.”

Joe Aguiar, Winters FFA Chapter President, said FFA opportunities offer real-life skills for students to experience and build upon.

“The FFA teaches outside of the classroom in ways that other programs can’t compete with,” Aguiar said.

“The hands-on skills that you learn hold incredible value and can be applied to later opportunities.”

In addition to classes and events, Winters FFA mem-

bers also work to provide the community with activities and products through annual fundraisers and events. In October, they host the Winters FFA Trunk or Treat so local children have a safe place to play games and have fun on Halloween.

In December, students work to sell and deliver holiday trees to local residents. The floriculture class also runs a floral arrangement subscription program.

While ag teachers Donnie Whitworth and Roberts prepare the students for the future, the history of the FFA in Winters is studded with awards spanning from public speaking championships in the 70s to welding and agricultural competition wins within the past decade. If the winning tenure of the FFA chapter in Winters is any indication of its impact on the youth taking part of it, suffice to say future is looking bright.

City seeking commissioner applicants

By Crystal Apilado Editor-in-Chief Winters City Hall’s doors are open to walk-in traffic again following a closure in mid-January.

City Hall and other public facility buildings were closed to walk-in services Jan. 12. City Manager Kathleen Salguero Trepa said staffing at the city had been impacted by a surge in COVID infections among employees and/or their families and within the community.

Walk-in services at the Winters Fire and Police Public Safety Facility lobby have also resumed.

“We’ve always been here and in-person appointments have always been available; we were just limiting the walk-in traffic to better manage that flow and reduce exposure,” Trepa noted.

ARP mini grants In her Feb. 11 City Manager update,

Trepa informed the community that applications for Yolo County American Rescue Plan (ARP) Mini Grants were being accepted now through March 31.

The Mini Grants program allows a localized response to the COVID-19 pandemic and economic recovery programs that supports community-based projects inline with the County ARP funding goals.

Mini Grant funding requests range in amounts of $1,000 and $10,000. More information is available on the ARP page on the Yolo County website, www. yolocounty.org/.

Yolo County’s universal mask requirement will be lifted along with the state’s on Feb. 15, the county announced last Wednesday.

The local health order requiring everyone to wear face coverings in indoor public settings and workplaces, regardless of vaccination status, has been in place since July 30. Going forward, only unvaccinated individuals will be required to wear face coverings, though the county continues to recommend that everyone wear face masks indoors.

That reassessment will focus on COVID-19 case rates, test positivity, hospi-

talizations and vaccination rates.

While new cases and test positivity have plummeted in recent weeks from a high in mid-January, vaccination rates among children have not changed much in recent months.

Waggoner opening TK, Kindergarten enrollment Thursday

By Crystal Apilado Editor-in-Chief The enrollment period for next school year’s Transitional Kindergarten (TK) and Kindergarten students officially opens up on Feb. 17 TK and Kindergarten registration packets for the Winters Joint Unified School District 2022-23 school year will be available in Waggoner Elementary School office starting Thursday.

Completed registration packets may begin to be returned starting at on Feb. 17

through March 18.

Children who turn 5 years old by Sept. 1 are eligible to register for Kindergarten. Children who turn 5 years old between Sept. 2 and Dec. 2, 2023 are eligible for next year’s TK class.

Winters FFA February Members of the Month Aguiar will be moving on to State Finals in March, competing at the highest level of competition in California.

Winters FFA Special to the Express The Winters FFA has had a busy few weeks, but they wanted to take the time to recognize their February Members of the Month.

This month, they are recognizing two individuals who exemplify what it means to bleed blue and gold. Riley Hurst and Allison Aguiar are phenomenal freshmen who embody what it means to be a part of the FFA. As Greenhands, they’ve taken advantage of every opportunity available.

They’ve both competed in Creed Speaking, which is a freshman — only competition. Aguiar and Hurst competed at the Sectional and Regional levels.

Donkey basketball is back

The Winters FFA chapter is facing off against the Esparto FFA chapter in the annual Donkey Basketball match up.

The annual Donkey Basketball game is happening on Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6:30 p.m. in the Esparto High School gym. A limited number of tickets were made available for pre-sale only this year due to limitations set by COVID-related policies and guidelines for indoor events.

Yolo County Library is excited to honor Black History Month with a variety of programs and resources for residents of all ages. The national theme for 2022 – Black Health and Wellness – aims to uplift the contributions of Black American medical and folk practitioners while addressing systemic health inequities and amplifying opportunities for the holistic betterment of Black wellness.

To pay homage to the connection between this month’s observations and the celebration of Emancipation on Juneteenth, the Library’s Black History Month banner was created in the form of a traditional story quilt. Each panel of the quilt incorporates iconography important to the historical narrative of captivity and freedom.

“When I reflect on my people’s history, I feel like I am handling something biblical. This part of American history is an Exodus story. The use and placement of every symbol could not be arbitrary. I questioned the digital medium I used to create it and I questioned whether it was right to share these symbols because they represent something either spiritual or secretive,” says Youth Services Librarian Katrina Laws-Ewald, who designed the story quilt banner.

Obituary Edith June Gonnella Edith “Edee” June Gonnella passed away peacefully late Thursday evening, on Feb. 3. Edee was born on June 12, 1955, in Yuba City and resided in Winters for several years. She was a registered dental assistant and she retired in 2021.

Edee is predeceased by her father and mother, George and Audrey (Mason) Forsman, and her niece Ashley Forsman.

Senior News Seniors respond to election call to action

By Rick von Geldern Express staff writer The Winters City Council and the Yolo County Board of Supervisors approved moving the Winters municipal general elections from June to November to align with other Yolo County cities. Winters was the last Yolo County city to move their municipal election

date.

Winters Senior Foundation (WSF) organizer, Marlene Bell, told the Express she was asked by City Manager, Kathleen Salguero Trepa, to help the city affix over 4,300 labels to postcards to registered voters noticing the election date change. Bell said Trepa told her the city was understaffed due to COVID-19

and that they could some help.

Bell put out a “call to action” email and quickly heard from eight senior WSF volunteers; however, it wasn’t long before 16 more offered their assistance. The WSF response is revealing of how the City of Winters and the WSF enjoy a mutually supportive relationship.

On Tuesday, Feb.1, 20 masked seniors presented themselves at City Hall ready to roll up their sleeves and tackle the task. Trepa welcomed and thanked volunteers and offered bottled water, carrot cake and a “swag bag” with some thoughtful contents to show the City’s appreciation.

ing volunteers, she conservatively anticipated that each volunteer could complete 80 labels per hour, reducing what could have been an arduous task into a three-hour job. However, once volunteers got going, they found in under an hour that over 4,300 cards had been labeled and were

By Jerry Lowden Winters Senior Foundation As the Winters Senior Foundation (WSF) starts the new year, they look back and thank those who donated to their Santa Bags program in December and recognize the teams of volunteer shoppers/delivery folks who made the program work.

Volunteer teams included Carol and Ed Scianna, Joni and

Grant Davids, Neal Van Alfen and Pam Kazmierczak, Jan and Randy Lauchaire, Valerie Whitworth and Tina Compton, Pierre Neu and Marcia Gibbs, Nadia and Bruce Chapman, Sandy Vickrey and family, and all members of the WSF Board. They were able to deliver to 50 deserving households in Winters, providing bags of paper products and other

essential items.

For 2022, the WSF Board is hoping to raise additional funds so that we can expand their program to reach a larger number of folks in town.

Keep an eye out for The Big Day of Giving event May 6, and consider a donation to the WSF that would directly benefit seniors in Winters.

By week’s end the postcards were being delivered to voter’s mailboxes notifying them that the next Winters general municipal election will be held on Nov. 8, 2022. Three of the five city council seats will be on the Nov. 8 ballot.

WSF wants to put in a word about a very important program that was created to assist all families or individuals here in Winters who may need special assistance during times of emergencies.

The program is known as SNAP — Special Needs Alert Program — and is managed by the Winters Police Department. It assists first responders during emergencies involving City residents with contact information about those with special needs. A contact information application is available from the police department via the internet or in person and is quick and easy to fill out. Please take the time to complete the application to protect yourself and others.

In a press release issued, the county said, “at the start of the pandemic, we had few options to slow the spread of COVID-19 and prevent our healthcare system from becoming overwhelmed.

Sisson said Wednesday the county is lifting its mask order “because the COVID-19 situation has changed thanks to effective vaccines, effective treatments, and a variant that causes less severe disease.

“While Yolo County case rates during the Omicron surge reached unprecedented levels, fewer individuals required hospitalization than during previous surges.

“At the beginning of the pandemic, aggressive actions, including stay-at-home orders, were taken to slow the spread of COVID-19 and flatten the curve in order to avoid a situation in which more people would require hospitalization for COVID-19 than the healthcare system could support,” Sisson said.

“Thanks to public cooperation with these orders, Yolo County successfully flattened the curve.”

Students masking outdoors

Sisson is no longer recommending that K-12 students wear masks outdoors at school, provided a majority of the student population is vaccinated.

Previously, Sisson had recommended everyone wear masks outdoors on school campuses.

While Winters Joint Unified School District Trustees voted to not require masks to be worn outdoors, other Yolo County school districts — including the Davis and Woodland — made outdoor masking mandatory.

Sisson said the change is that students who are ages five through 11 are now eligible to be vaccinated.

“When this school year began, children five to 11 were not eligible for vaccination and the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) has recommended that unvaccinated persons wear a mask outdoors when they are not able to maintain six feet of distance from others.

“So that was the basis for my recommendation for outdoor masking in students in Yolo County.”

However, the requirement for masking indoors will not change for K-12 schools.

“The state continues to require all students and staff on K-12 campuses to wear masks indoors and the state has indicated that will not change before Feb. 15.”

Students have been removing their masks outdoors during lunch, of course, and Sisson said Thursday that there hasn’t been much in the way of virus transmission during those periods.

“I think there have been close contacts and a lot of students who have been sent home to quarantine because of exposures outdoors at lunchtime, but we’re aware of very few students who have actually converted to positive as a result of those outdoor exposures,” Sisson said.

According to data from the California Department of Public Health, just 35 percent of children ages five to 11 in Yolo County are fully vaccinated and 55 percent of adolescents ages 12 to 17.

Community shares favorite FFA moments

By Crystal Apilado Editor-in-Chief The Winters FFA program has been thriving at Winters High School since it was first offered in 1955.

Between opportunities to compete and hands-on experience on campus, many students have graduated with memories they hold dear.

Josh Cody, Class of 1998, said he has much gratitude for the experience in livestock showmanship.

“One of the greatest accomplishments of my show career was to earn the Reserve Champion Market Lamb Honors at the Yolo County Fair,” Cody said.

“My ag instructor Kent Benson and the Winters FFA program provided the foundation for my current success.”

Cari Kiefer said one of her favorite FFA memories was watching her son Michael Kiefer receive his State FFA Degree in March of 2020 right before the pandemic lock down.

“He worked so hard to earn this degree and the FFA program has helped him grow so much,” Kiefer said.

Jill Aguiar said her favorite memory was watching her son Joe Aguiar during the auction of his hog in August 2021. Joe was awarded Novice Grand Champion for his hog Petunia at the Yolo County Fair.

That’s not to say the FFA has completely abandoned livestock. For Emmett Edman, a senior and chapter treasurer, he’s incorporated the welding skills he’s learned into his Senior Capstone Project.

“I love everything about the FFA. The leadership, the teamwork that goes in and just working in the

welding shop. I’ve also learned a lot and gotten a lot better at public speaking,” Edman said. “I want to be an engineer when I grow up, and my senior project is rebuilding the pig pens.

There’s a lot of engineering that goes into it and just making it work.”

Meanwhile, some FFA members are simply in it to cultivate their natural leadership abilities.

“I joined FFA for the leadership opportunities.

After that I joined Ag Leadership and started doing public speaking contests and won a regional contest against schools like Woodland and Davis,” said Ava

Skinner, a junior and chapter secretary. “Through your SAE (Supervised Agricultural Experience) you can get college scholarships. FFA also just gives you job skills, like the public speaking is a main one because we have to do senior capstones and FFA kids usually do really well in that.”

The hands-on opportunities gives students an opportunity to travel and engage with other FFA chapter members. Between competitions and regional events, there’s no shortage of experience and opportunities for students to grow as individuals.

“The FFA does a fantastic job with events and competitions above the local level,” Aguiar said. “I love the travel and meeting others from all across the region who share the same values that I do.”

Allison placed second in Creed Speaking and Dyer-Gonzalez placed third in Impromptu Speaking. This March, the duo will represent Winters again when they head to Sacramento

to compete in the State Finals.

Seventeen representatives have been chosen for the 2022 Almond Leadership Program who will continue working while receiving focused training on all aspects of the industry.

Greater Winters resident Kate Capurso, a sixth generation Californian and a graduate of the UC Davis School of Management, has been selected to join the program’s class of 2022.

Capurso is employed by Blue Diamond Growers managing strategic aspects of their sustainability programs.

By Wally Pearce Winters Elder Day Council As we age, we gain essential experiences and insights. But every day, millions of older adult’s struggles with challenges such as declining health, the loss of loved ones, and for some, the feelings of isolation. These experiences, and others, sometimes lead to chronic loneliness, and with COVID-19 dramatically increasing social isolation and critical health vulnerabilities, there’s a need for families and communities in helping to improve social connections.

Social loneliness

refers to a lack of community or friends, while emotional loneliness refers to a lack of strong connections to family. In a society that values physical appearance and beauty, older individuals may isolate themselves due to fears surrounding these youthful expectations. Losing a home or income can also contribute to social isolation.

At times, loneliness may pose a noteworthy threat to older adults because of its associated emotional, cognitive, and physical health outcomes.

That’s why viable community-based senior services, caregivers,

relatives, families, and even neighbors, can play an important role in making a difference in the lives of older adults who struggle with loneliness.

According to the National Poll on Healthy Aging, a nationally recognized organization, before the COVID-19 pandemic, one in three adults in the U.S. ages 50 to 80 lacked regular companionship. Additionally, the Global Health Research and Policy states that 43 percent of older adults self-reported feeling lonely.

Results from the June 2020, United States Senate Spe-

cial Committee on Aging dealing with COVID-19, state that social isolation, depression, and anxiety have worsened due to COVID-19 with their study finding 73 percent of older adults reported feelings of loneliness.

f you believe that the Los Angeles Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals 23 – 20, congratulations, you are in the majority of Americans. But what if you are a Republican and believe that Donald Trump won the 2020 presidential election? According to the Washington Post, only 21 percent of Republicans say Joe Biden’s victory was legitimate.

It doesn’t matter what kind of facts you present to them, they just won’t change their minds.

Democrats aren’t much better. President Biden keeps telling us that inflation is “temporary,” and government spending and policies aren’t to blame for rising prices. Inflation is hitting seven percent, but no one in Washington is to blame. The trillions of dollars our government pushed into the economy, and still their domestic policies have nothing to do with our current financial situation.

What did government officials think would happen to the

price of gasoline and natural gas if you stop building pipelines or allowing new oil exploration in the United States? Limiting the supply surely wouldn’t cause prices to rise at the pump.

PG&E is telling us that natural gas prices are up 90 percent from last year, so don’t blame them for your gas bill doubling this winter.

I wish it were true that the Rams lost last Sunday. I don’t know any of the Rams players personally, but I don’t like any of them, or their fans. If a Ram player gets traded to the Raiders or the 49ers I may change my mind. When the Celtics traded Danny Ainge to the Kings, I decided that he may be a jerk, but he was now our jerk.

Yolo County and much of the state, which is good news. Healthcare officials aren’t supposed to be political, but it is getting harder and harder to follow their advice.

COVID-19 was something new and trying to keep people safe was a challenge, but they kept changing the rules so often that people stopped having faith in them. They said to follow the science, but the science wasn’t consistent.

I’m still not confident that it is safe to be in large crowds without a mask. I’m not wearing a mask as often as I did two years ago when this virus was spreading and killing people. It is still spreading, but the death rate among vaccinated people is low, so I feel better about being in public places. I even shook a few hands this week, a

A forest of trees will grace the parking lot at Railroad Street and Edwards in downtown Winters on Saturday, March 5. The Winters Friends of the Library will hold its annual Fruit Tree Sale from 9 a.m. until the trees are sold out. The big news for WFoL members is that if you have a current membership, bring your membership card and you’ll go to the head of the line, entering at 8:30 instead of 9 a.m. But don’t fret if your membership has lapsed. We’ll have a membership table right there at the entrance so you can join on the spot.

Featured this year are bare-root fruit trees.

The trees are donated by Sierra Gold in Yuba City and are $10 each. About a week before the sale, a list of available trees will be posted on the WFoL website, wfol.org. hen I opened the medicine cabinet in the bathroom this morning, to clean it up a bit, I took a step back and realized that I was looking at the proof that I’m really getting older. The cabinet was so full — just stuffed, with, well, stuff. Do I need all these items?

I stepped back, closed my eyes, and recalled the way my medicine cabinet looked in my very first apartment. It was back

I don’t care about Omicron, and neither should you Allow me to regale you with a story that harkens back to one month PCP (PreCOVID Pandemic).

When science was less political. Way back when data ruled the day and individual health choices weren’t treated as collective public business eliciting chastisement, criticism and “othering.”

When the Omicron variant first burst on the scene, I saw a Johns Hopkins professor named Dr. Marty Makary, confused by our top public health official saying we still needed to see if the vaccines protected against the variant.

His confusion was rooted in knowledge that the answer could be had in 12 hours by a routine lab test to determine if the vaccines prevent the Omicron spike protein from bonding with our cells. Government scientists eventually took weeks to confirm this.

On Dec. 15, a study out of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) School of Public Health was published and is now pending peer review. Initial findings are that Omicron replicates 70 times faster than the Delta variant of

On the countertop I had my toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste. I never placed them in the medicine cabinet, as I had always been required to do as a child, because it seemed so inefficient to do that twice a day. (I still keep them out on the counter.)

And the last item on the counter was a plastic container, shaped like an orange, filled with chewable vitamin C tablets.

I was chewing up a handful of those vitamin C’s every day — two-time Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling had said they would stop just about any common cold from happening. (He was wrong, but those sugar-filled tablets sure tasted good.)

Opening my eyes again, I see that so much has changed in my medicine cabinet, as I have aged. The first thing I notice is an old bottle of prescription cough syrup.

And I mean old. The expiration date on the bottle is 2014. But hey, why toss it now? Let’s see how old it can get.

I still have bandaides, but not just one small box. Now I have three boxes, filled with nearly a dozen shapes and sizes. There is no longer any Bufferin, because it hasn’t been made since the 90s. But, boy, am I ever prepared for headaches and muscle aches: there is Excedrin, Bayer aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen (generic Tylenol). Why do I have four types of pain killers? I really don’t know; it must be another sign of old age.

Neither the Pfizer nor Chinese vaccines produced enough antibodies to ward against Omicron. A study out of Israel suggested that not even four vaccine shots resulted in sufficient antibody production to stave off infection.

Public health officials, being the one trick pony riders that they have become, are predictably using Omicron and the new so-called “Stealth Omicron” variant to reinforce their mask push, data be damned.

Still, they persist.

Vaccines will not set us free.

As I covered in my column the other month, the presumed effectiveness against Delta will likely be lessened via the decreased time to infection with Omicron.

Some of the items in the cabinet seem to make sense; there is some Day-Quill and Ny-Quill, a can of shaving cream, and a small bottle of antacid. Ah, antacid. Nothing could be a clearer indicator that an old person lives here.

But a few of the visible items in the cabinet just confuse me.

I’m surprised to see a package of Preparation-H, which I am completely certain I never purchased.

And there is a large bottle of Calamine lotion, which I don’t use.

But just glancing at it makes me sing out that fine lyric from “Poison Ivy,” the great 60s song by the Coasters: “You’re gonna need an ocean, of Calamine lotion ….”

On the very top shelf, untouched for years, there is a nearly empty can of Desenex foot spray. It was always my favorite brand, going back to high school. But it hasn’t been available for years. Why do I hold on to a useless can of Desenex? I guess my yearning for the brands I once used is another sign of old age.

Next to the Desenex, there is a bottle of Goddard’s Liquid Jewelry Cleaner. I can’t remember the last time I used it. I can’t even remember why I bought it. Yes, indeed, I am getting old.

As I close the door to the cabinet, I feel myself smile again. I hope to have quite a few years left, and I look forward to seeing what mysterious items have found their way into the medicine cabinet, 10 or 15 years from now, when I decide to clean it up again.

Express Yourself Sophie Says: Pedestrian tales Gramps Says Circumstances have made me more pedestrian than I used to be.

You may refer to Webster and use any definition of pedestrian that you feel is appropriate, my feelings will not be hurt. There are some disadvantages and advantages of becoming pedestrian. For instance, while walking to Lorenzo Market from my house I need to traverse gravel and dirt for approximately 150 feet on the shoulder of Grant Avenue. This is a short distance as compared to those who walk from Yolo Housing into town.

They do not have access to a sidewalk for at least half a mile. In Winters, this is a disadvantage.

Allow me to introduce some benefits to hoofing it. The other day I took a stroll into town. I was awed by the early flowering pear and deciduous magnolia trees. Along the way I passed the post office and noticed that someone has taken special interest to install a lovely planting in front that includes blooming annuals and perennials. While passing the building that used to be True Value Hardware I peeked through the glass and was surprised to see that a large portion of the back wall has been removed. What’s going on there? Let’s stop in front of The Kona Ice Shop and Farmer Closet Boutique. You definitely will not see this from your automobile.

Displayed inside the windows are a series of hanging hearts. The creators are identified as coming from Ms. Luna’s class room 14, Waggoner, second grade; Ms. Ivory’s class room 7, Shirley Rominger, fifth grade; and Ms. MaCay’s first grade. Written on the hearts are places that the children love in Winters. The most

often mentioned is the ‘Wooden Park.’ One heart has an artist drawing of a child holding on to the zip line. Almost every business in town is mentioned including Round Table and Pizza Factory, Kona Ice, Ace Hardware, Putah Creek Café, Buckhorn, Burger King and so on. Tractors are mentioned. One card reads, “I love the friendly people”, another reads, “I love Winters because it is a small, nice town.”

A few steps farther along, patrons are eating out doors and you can enjoy the delightful aroma of fresh cooked food.

The next time you are in that area, take a minute to find an old rosemary bush planted in a large ornamental pot. Its trunk is gnarly and the plant is aged enough to take on the characteristics of an oriental bonsai. I usually take a little pinch so I can enjoy the spicy fragrance.

Also, of interest, are the succulents planted in raised metal troughs on the Railroad Avenue side of the café.

In my youth, I lived with my Grandmother for five or so years.

She didn’t own a car and we got along fine. On occasion we would have a special outing and ride the municipal bus to visit her mother.

They both lived long lives, Great Grandmother lived 105 years. She didn’t have a car either.

From one of my favorite movies, I quote Ferris Bueller, "If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Whereas with Delta we saw peak protection against spread for interactions lasting between 5 to 15 minutes, covering most casual day to day interactions, Omicron’s shorter exposure time reduces that 1 to 3 minutes. We rarely have interactions that fall in that range unless no one is in line at the store.

Last week, Johns Hopkins stated that their studies show lockdowns had no effect on COVID deaths, but lockdowns did impose enormous economic and social costs. The mantra of people who cling to these restrictions has often been “If we can save just one life, it’s worth it.” Well, we didn’t, and it wasn’t.

This seems obvious both now, and if you examine the full scope of the available data, as early as July 2020.

Locally, COVIDpositive hospitalizations peaked at 27.

Once again, contrary to public health warnings and the Chicken Littles in the “Covid-19 Yolo Community Response’’ Facebook group clucking that the sky is falling, no sky fell. Hospitals were not overwhelmed and no one that we know of has died in the streets waiting for a hospital bed. It is worth noting that

in New York, nearly half of the reported COVID hospitalizations were caused by something other than COVID-19 and the positive test was incidental. I would bet that there is similar overlap here in Yolo County, too.

Risk cannot be measured by case counts.

By the CDC numbers, Omicron cases were 2.46 times more numerous than Delta cases over a similar four-month span. Incident Fatality Rate (IFR) of Delta is only two-thirds that of Alpha, and the Omicron IFR is two-fifths that of Delta.

From Alpha to Omicron, we have a 75 percent reduction in the death rate. We can squabble over if it’s due to mutations, vaccines, or therapeutics, but the current risk of an individual dying with COVID is barely above zero.

The usual response to information about declining death rates is to raise the issue of so-called “Long COVID,” but no doctor or study has yet been able to measure or confirm its existence with any test. Presently, it is a self-reported condition.

“Follow the science” has, on both sides of the debate, has been “Follow the politics.” Supervisor Jim Provenza of Davis said this quiet truth out loud at a recent county meeting: “My experience, when we didn’t have

the current rule — which my constituents like — was that the unvaccinated people were the ones not wearing the masks, and vaccinated people were.”

If we are truly following the science, the preferences of voters are irrelevant.

We seem to have been pursuing a “Zero COVID” policy, akin to Chinese national health policy.

Some proponents of this approach seem unwilling to accept any non-zero risk.

Presuming these are also people who get into an automobile, assuming the very real risks involved with that activity, their inconsistency in risk assessment related to COVID is irrational, unrealistic, and we need to stop letting these people drive the discussion. We should already be well on the way to the road back to normal, as far as the government is concerned.

Smarter people than I, actual scientists and some public health professionals, have asserted that there is likely nothing we can do to prevent the spread of Omicron, and the real risk is negligible anyways. Arguably not enough to disrupt progress in child education and the economy.

Thankfully, fewer people are engaging in health theater.

Can our leaders start the process toward normalization already?

Gardens may have to withstand months of harsh weather each winter, and such conditions can take a toll. Gardeners can consider the following tips as they try to restore their gardens and get them ready for spring planting.

They may even feel too overwhelmed to break out of this routine.

By just making a simple phone-call to a senior citizen, that humble act of kindness can often raise the emotional state of someone dealing with loneliness.

“Over the next year, I’m looking to discover new ways to give back to the industry and community, as well as ways to maintain and strengthen the California almond industry’s position as innovative leaders within agriculture,” Capurso said.

When asked what she sees as the greatest challenge facing California’s almond industry, Capurso mentioned current challenge at ports.

“Like all ag products, and most commodities right now, our most immediate concern is the tangled shipping and port circumstances. Sales that are being missed are simply lost revenue to the industry and they won’t be back filled,” Capurso said.

“That is hard on everyone in the line, from growers to processors to customers. On the plus side, almonds have a long shelf life, so when customers do get their shipments, there will be no loss of high quality.”

“I’m proud to be part of such an important, forward-looking industry. The world needs more plant proteins and the world needs trees, which is why we say we make the world better by what we grow and how we grow,” Capurso concluded.

Tuleyome Tales: A family pantry Martha Cerda Special to the Express I grew up believing that food is meant to be shared with family.

To my great surprise, my family is not the only one who thinks so. Among oak woodlands and local parks is the charismatic Acorn Woodpecker (Melanerpes formicivorus). A social, rowdy, and extremely hard-working species of bird. Also known as the ‘clown’ bird because of its striking facial color pattern, red crown, and yellowish forehead and throat.

Its back is black and slightly bluish with pale white eyes. And like a true clown you can hear it clowning around, projecting big laughs and calls to its family. When they fly they seem to bounce, going up and down imaginary hills in the air until they reach their destination. It usually inhabits oak forests (Quercus spp.), mixed forests with pine (Pinus) and oak, in addition to spruce (Pseudotsuga) and redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) forests.

The Acorn Woodpecker family is like a small colony, composed of a dozen or more birds. They may be monogamous, polyandrous, or polygynous. When caring for young, their parenting style is cooperative - one for all and all for one! They take turns feeding and protecting the family’s young.

In mid-fall, acorn

woodpecker families are in search of acorns. Acorns are the fruits of oak trees.

The acorn is a fruit with a hard shell that protects the seed and is protected by a cupshaped dome on top.

Like everything in nature, they are varied, some elongated, others round. Oak trees have irregular cycles.

In some years they produce many acorns, where the floors of trails and parks are covered with these nuts. In a great year, an oak tree can produce up to 10,000 nuts!

But curiously in other years, there is no trace of any.

Most species of woodpeckers typically use their chisel-like beaks to peck trees and build their nests.

In the bird world, the Acorn Woodpecker is the only one that, apart from using its beak to build nests, also uses it to store food. This behavior and great strength help to create holes and store acorns to eat in the winter.

These acorns are collected by and for the whole family, and is maintained and used for generations.

Holes are drilled in dry trunks and branches. Dry trees are preferred, as the sap can affect the acorns. One family may drill millions of holes in a single tree.

This is known as a granary tree. But the work doesn’t end after the holes are created — the fun is just beginning! The birds will now have the re-

Soccer teams head to playoffs

Women’s varsity On Thursday, Feb. 10, the Winters High School women’s varsity soccer team lost their last home conference game against Live Oak High School by a score of 2-1.

Live Oak is one of Winters’ toughest competitors, and it was an extremely well payed, close game. Live Oak scored a goal very early on in the game and was awarded a penalty kick on a light contact foul in the box. Makayla Garland, the Warriors goalkeeper, made the proper read, but couldn’t quite stretch out enough to save it.

McKenna Clifford tried to catch up and close the gap scoring a goal off of an assist from Ava Skinner.

“We made minimal substitutions as this game was to win the league outright,” said head coach Kim Olivas.

While the women’s varsity team didn’t win the league they ended up tied for first place with Live Oak, taking second seed in the division three playoffs behind University Prep out of Redding.

The Warriors will go into their game this Thursday, Feb.17 with the intention to win against Anderson Union High School District and make it to the Championships.

Men’s varsity On Tuesday, Feb. 8 the WHS men’s varsity soccer team won their home conference game against Los Molinos High School by a score of 1-0.

While Los Molinos put up a valiant effort, the Warriors dominated the game and were able to keep possession of the ball for a majority of the game.

Pedro Garcia scored the only goal of the game off of an assist from Christian Hernandez.

Hernandez and Javier Bermudez both stood out defensively; they both played an aggressive game and took advantage of every opportunity to attack the ball and get it back to the midfielders and forwards.

The men’s varsity team played their second game of the week at home against Live Oak, which ended with a tied score of 1-1.

Pedro Garcia scored very early on in the game with a very long shot in the first half of the game.

The Warriors faced many obstacles during their play time against Live Oak, but Jacob Baker remained persistent and did a great job, recovering any attempts Live Oak made to move the ball up

WHS Basketball Recap

By Aaron Geerts Express staff writer Both of the Winters High School varsity teams laced up for competition last week to wrap up their stellar regular seasons.

The varsity women's team squared off against Live Oak High School on Wednesday, Feb. 9 with Emily Dodic spearheading the offense with 19 points. With lockdown defense combined with hustle on both sides of the ball, the squad’s efforts tamed the Lions in a 38-31 win.

Later in the week, the squad would take on Willows High School. Unfortunately, the Warriors would face off against the long-time-rival short-handed as Dodic injured her ankle in practice before the game. Adversity aside, the team played hard and gained the lead late in the game. The Honkers, however, took advantage of turnovers and hit clutch

“I am very proud of how the guys were able to refocus and maintain good sportsmanship after two really hard calls,” said head coach Fernando Cervantes.

“On Friday we faced Willows for the third time this season and this game followed a similar script as the others. We came out on fire and the energy from the stands really helped pump up the guys in the first half,” said head coach Brendan McShea. “In the second half we saw our lead dwindle to only four with some contested threes made by the Honkers. But we didn’t let that slow us down and continued to play hard together and finished the fourth quarter on a 14-2 run.”

As both teams now enter the playoffs, the varsity women will travel to Oroville High School on Tuesday, Feb. 15.

As for the varsity men, they’ll be headed to Colusa High School for their first playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 16.

Christian Hernandez Christian Hernandez, a junior on the Winters High School varsity soccer team, is the Pisani’s Athlete of the Week.

“He has been a tremendous leader for our defense, and is one of the best defensive players in the league,” said head coach Fernando Cervantes. Consistency is key to wellness through yoga

By Aaron Geerts Express staff writer For thousands of years, people have been stretching the aches and pains from their bodies through yoga.

Dr. James Stirton of Winters Family Chiropractic is back to break down why one should opt to indulge in this age-old exercise practice.

To the dismay of stereotypes, yoga is more than simply learning how to fold themselves into a pretzel. Rather, it’s a practice that bolsters ones mental, physical and spiritual wellness. As Stirton seeks to provide the same for his patients, it’s no wonder he encourages all to hop aboard the yoga train.

“It’s one of the safest and most structured therapeutic activities

you can do besides swimming for the health and wellness of your body. It passes through all those ranges of motion in the arms, shoulders, hip, neck, back and it’s done at the person’s pace so it’s very safe for anyone to start,” Stirton said, explaining the correlation to chiropractic. “You have mechanisms in your body that help heal it. If you don’t stretch, it’ll heal you poorly and leave you with chronic problems in that area.

More common than not, it’s also related to

fascial restrictions.”

According to Stirton, yoga is an ideal way to break up facial restrictions from inactivity and old injuries to reduce how chronic they become.

Benefits abound, yoga — like any new activity one participates in — is a pond Stirton recommends wading into slowly. If one dives in headfirst, however, one has the potential to break rather than bend.

“Not getting started at a beginner level is a big mistake. If you have a rigid fascial restricted body with

tenderness and pain, you’ll likely flare up or injure yourself doing more advance yoga. So, you should consult your doctor before starting any new exercise,” said Stirton. “People don’t stay consistent and do it for an extended period of time. They should just slow it down, space it out and let themselves recover just like any gym activity. One can over train or over stretch if they’re not used to it.”

Proof, of course, isn’t always in the pudding.

For Stirton, proof of yoga’s benefits can be found in many of his geriatric patients.

With improvements to their mobility, flexibility and quality of life, Stirton maintains yoga can work for anybody that

hasn’t begun sprouting gray hairs just yet.

“Jumping jacks are also a prime example of a full range motion activity. So is Tai-Chi, which is an Asian art form of improving the body’s wellness. It’s a safe activity centered around balancing your body as you move and build agility and strength. Like yoga, it calms the mind and body,” Stirton said, laying out some yoga-adjacent activities.

“Dancing is also mildly straining activity for your body. It stim-

ulates your mind by having you keep up and remember dance moves and responding to your partner’s cues.

It’s less stillness and more full range body activity.”

With a tenure of healthiness spanning thousands of years, it wouldn’t be stretching the truth to say yoga is a boon to every body that practices it.

It’s like he always says, “If you’re not certain, ask Dr. Stirton.”

Program puts focus on teens and dating violence

By Natalia Baltazar Special to the Express February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month (TDVAM), a national effort to help raise awareness about teen dating violence, provide prevention education and promote healthy relationships.

The focus of the awareness effort is preventing teen dating violence, which impacts one out of every three youths every year. According to the California Partnership To End Domestic Violence, the essence of preventing teen dating violence is “stopping dating and domestic violence before they ever occur which requires stopping the conditions that support violence and promoting conditions that prevent violence. We must end systematic/cultural power imbalances (sexism, racism, homophobia, etc.), and, instead, build healthier communities, form strong connections, and know our selfworth.”

Teen dating violence is an issue that impacts everyone — teens, their parents, teachers, friends, and the whole community. Together, we can raise the community’s awareness about teen dating violence and promote safe, healthy relationships.

Educating our youths about the issues is one of the primary goals of teen dating violence awareness month.

“Teen dating violence is an issue that impacts teens throughout the world.

It is crucial that we take the initiative to educate youths and provide a safe space where students can share their experiences and thoughts on what healthy relationships are meant to look like,” says Tony Morales, Empower Yolo ASSETs Site Coordinator at Woodland High School.

These relationships can have many problems with communication and jealousy and can be further complicated with the pressures of social media. “Many students don’t know that abuse comes in many forms and is not limited to physical but also includes emotional and verbal.

This stems from the lack of conversations being held. It is critical for youths to begin learning the skills needed to create and maintain healthy relationships.

These skills include how to manage feelings and how to communicate

in a healthy way,” says Morales.

In an effort to educate local teens, provide a safe space and equip them with healthy relationship skills, Empower Yolo’s After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs) program is hosting a month-long TDVAM campaign at Woodland High School.

The campaign will include weekly workshops and a fun, month-long meme contest on healthy relationships. The series of workshop topics will include: what is teen dating violence awareness month;

what does teen dating violence look like; in their shoes: teens and dating violence; and healthy relationships.

Resources where students can get help will be provided at every workshop.

New this year ASSETs will use the Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s In Their Shoes: Teens and Dating Violence program to give students a more in-depth view on teen dating violence. “With this program, students will be able to see the different ways that teen dating violence can show in different relation-

ships. The ASSETs team is confident that with this program we will be able to more thoroughly educate students on this topic,” says Fabian Iglesias, Director of Youth Programs, ASSETs Program Manager, Woodland High School.

During the year ASSETs provides prevention education through its curriculum. Even during online school through the pandemic, the ASSETs team provided prevention education to students making 12 prevention education presentations to 90 students from July through December 2021. In the current school year, the program is engaging even more students.

“Every Thursday, the ASSETs team hosts weekly Our Strength meetings, a

prevention education program devoted towards raising awareness on various issues which affect teens in Woodland such as stalking, gang violence, mental health and levels of poverty,” says Morales.

ASSETs also provides resources and services for students.

“ASSETs works hard to deliver programming that touches upon teen dating violence throughout the year. Our focus is to prevent the students we serve and the community from experiencing dating violence by showing our teens the warning signs of abuse. In those situations where students are experiencing dating violence, we refer them to various partners and in-house departments.
