Community engages in peaceful protest to support BLM By Crystal Apilado Editor-in-Chief Over 300 people gathered at Rotary Park on Saturday, June 13 to engage in a peaceful protest in part of the Black Lives Matter movement. Lesly Rodriguez, one of the protest organizers, said the goal for the event was to bring the Winters community together to stand up for black lives, as well as to educate them about the prime movement. Local speakers were also given a platform to share some of their experiences as black community members in Winters. Speaker Eli Moore said although she was

asked to share about her experience, she needs to speak for those who can no longer speak for themselves anymore. She read a list of names of black individuals who were victims of police brutality, and encouraged attendees to look them up and learn more about their stories. The list included Sandra Bland, Troy Robinson, Randy Nelson and more. She also shared the story of Kendrick Johnson and asked attendees to learn more about his story because his name needs to be known. The changes help to align with the priorities of the WMS site single focus priorities. As presented at an earlier school board meeting, the WMS site focus plan priorities include: ~Access to guaranteed and viable curriculum: All students are enrolled in general education courses and receive essential standards based instruction. ~Access to intervention and extension: Assessment informs decision making and students receive flexible and timely intervention and extension based on their specific needs. ~Collaboration and collective inquiry: Staff have time to collaborate with a focus on learning, a shared responsibility to improve student outcomes, and a results orientation. Changes to the schedule include: ~The elimination of stand-alone electives for English Learners: English Language Development designated minutes will now be curriculum-embed-

ded in core content courses. This change now ensures that English Learner have access to the full elective courses offered. ~The creation of an eighth grade wheel of trimester electives: This change facilitates academic intervention and the completion of three-year Social Emotional Learning and Technology pathways. ~The inclusion of timely data-informed intervention sections: Literacy and mathematics workshop classes in each grade-level wheel provide a means to offer additional instruction and support in response to diagnostic results. ~The offering of revised elective choices: Administrators considered student interest and their teacher credentialing/expertise in order to create an updated offering of elective course options. Meals are being distributed from the Waggoner Elementary School site on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10:30 a.m.11:30 a.m. in a drive thru format. Lawrence Ramos, who has been engaged in ranching in the vicinity since his graduation from the local high school in 1947 and who entered the army service last fall, has been stationed in Germany. The Orrick Oil Company, of Woodland, is putting in a service station on Railroad Avenue across from the Winters Food Center. Wilbur E. Riley was elected president of the newly formed Winters Merchants Association at a meeting of the group held on Tuesday evening at the Winters City Hall. John Greenwood was elected secretary-treasurer. Mr. and Mrs. Horace A. Mermod and their daughter, Mrs. Jack Pierce of Oakland, plan to leave within the fortnight for an extended trip to Switzerland, The bulkhead gate frames and anchorages for the outlet works at Monticello Dam have been delivered to the contractors at the dam site. By using data to address each student’s unique needs, they can serve them for the window they need for that support. “English language learners did not have the option of a year long elective. They were feeling frustrated,” Girimonte said. “We felt that all students on our campus

group should continue to stay home, Tan said, adding that “just because activities are open, does not mean you have to go out. That’s even true if you are not in a high risk category.” Meanwhile, the county will be keeping a close eye on the whether the rise in new cases impacts the attestation that allowed Yolo County to move ahead with opening businesses in recent weeks. “If we hit a surge or we can no longer meet our attestation, it means that we will need to pause or pull back on reopening,” Tan said. “If it gets to that point, we may need to go backwards and to close activities.”

Library patrons may reserve library materials anytime through the libraryâ€™s online catalog or by calling 530666-8005 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday. The libraryâ€™s online catalog is available at https://web-iii.yolocounty. org/. Patrons must then wait for confirmation that the requested items are available for pickup. Yolo waste operations resumes certain programs Yolo County Press Release Effective as of Saturday, June 20, the Esparto Convenience Center transfer station, located at 27075 County Road 19A in Esparto, will resume normal operating hours on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9:30 a.m.â€“3:30 p.m. The transfer station is open to all customers and no cash or EBT will be accepted at this time, only credit card and check payments. Effective as of June 12, the Paint Shed program at the Yolo County Household Hazardous Waste Facility will resume regular operating hours on Fridays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m.â€“3:30 p.m. The Paint Shed program allows the public to pick up free, good usable paint, cleaning products, pool chemicals, and other items to promote reuse. To maintain social distancing, staff will be onsite to ensure

Winters community invited to virtual Healthcare Forum By Debra Palmer Special to the Express On Wednesday, June 24 from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., The League of Women Voters Davis Area will be hosting a virtual Healthcare Forum, â€œWhat has the COVID crisis unveiled about healthcare access and affordability in Yolo County?â€? The keynote speaker, Dr. James Kahn, MD, MPH, Professor Emeritus, UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies, Institute for Global Health Sciences, will give an overview of health care policy and delivery in the United States. Kahn, an accomplished health systems researcher who has published extensively on health care reform, economics, cost analysis and other issues in the academic and lay press, will speak of our current challenges and opportunities for future reform. The COVID-19 crisis has magnified notable gaps inherent in this system. It is time for an in-depth public discussion. Kahn will consider how current policy and delivery impact the accessibil-

ity and costs of health care. He will identify key elements that must be addressed in order to provide everyone with health care. Senior News Regular exercise is important while staying at home By Crystal Apilado Editor-in-chief Despite the lift of the stay-at-home order in Yolo County, older members of our society are still being asked by county health officials to stay home as much as possible and to even avoid large family gatherings. The bone health of seniors and those already diagnosed with osteoporosis is an important health issue that should not be ignored. Although May is National Osteoporosis Month in the United States, senior citizens should continue to take actions daily to help protect their bone health year round. Debra Palmer, a former Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner and current chair of the Winters Senior Commission on Aging said she has concerns about the long term effects of sheltering in place for local seniors who have low bone mineral density, osteoporosis, and

who have not maintained regular weight bearing activities. “Decreased weight bearing activity decreases bone mineral density, which contributes to the risk of fractures in a person who falls from a standing height,” Palmer said. She encourages seniors to continue walking for exercise and or weight lifting while sheltering in place. Engaging in regular weight-bearing exercise helps seniors work to improve their strength, balance, posture and reduce the risk of falls.

How To Handle It The National Osteoporosis Foundation suggests a variety of exercise examples on their website that fall into one of four targeted categories: 1. Posture exercises: These movements improve upon posture and reduce rounded or “sloping” shoulders. They can help to decrease the risk of breaking

a bone, especially in the spine. 2. Hip and back (spine) strengthening exercises: These movements help to strengthen the muscles in the back and hips. 3. Balance exercises: These movements strengthen the legs and balance. They also help to decrease a chance of falling. 4. Functional exercises: These movements help to improve movement by mimicking everyday activities. For example, those who are challenged by getting up from a chair can work on standing up and sitting down several times. Here are two simple exercises to add to your daily routine:

Single Foot Stand This exercise helps to work on balance and leg strength. 1. Stand behind a steady, un-movable chair and hold onto the back. 2. Pick up your left foot and balance on

your right foot as long as is comfortable. 3. Place your left foot down and then lift up your right foot and balance on your left foot Courtesy photo

Wall Push-Ups These push-ups can provide strengthening for the entire upper body with a focus on the arms and chest. 1. Stand in front of a sturdy wall, up to two feet away but as close as you need to. 2. Place your hands up against the wall directly in front of your shoulders. 3. Keep your body straight and bend your elbows to lean in towards the wall. 4. Stop with your face close to the wall and then straighten your arms to push your body away from the wall. Swindlers prey upon COVID-19 fears Yolo County Dist. Attorney Special to the Express While many people have rallied to help others in response to COVID-19, there are others trying to make money off of the fear and uncertainty surrounding it. The Federal Trade Commission and Federal Drug Administration have issued warning letters to several companies that claim they are able to treat or prevent COVID-19. These companies are marketing products such as aromatherapy, teas, colloid silver, essential oils, as well as vaccines and medicines, allegedly under FDA testing. There are no known products to treat, vaccinate or prevent COVID-19. No at-home tests for COVID-19 exist. Do not give any money or insurance information to anyone claiming otherwise. Other states have also had reports of fake drive-through “testing” where fake test kits were sold for over $200 each. In addition to losing your money for something that will not work, it is extremely dangerous to use any untested medical products. In general, you should not purchase medical products through ads, calls, texts or emails. Only

make purchases on the advice of your doctor, and then only through trusted retailers like a local pharmacy. Do not participate in any drive-through COVID-19 testing unless it is backed by a legitimate company or advised by your doctor. The best way to avoid contracting or spreading COVID-19 is to follow the guidelines set by public health officials. Wash your hands often for at least 20 seconds. If soap isn’t readily available, cover your hands with hand sanitizer and rub them until they feel dry. Clean and disinfect frequently used surfaces. Stay home as much as possible and avoid contact with other people. Wear a cloth face covering or mask whenever you go out in public. You can also take basic steps to avoid being scammed. The most effective prevention is to not make contact with scammers in the first place. Do not pick up or respond to calls, emails or text messages from unknown numbers. It can be more tempting than ever to pick up the phone while home alone. Instead, if you want to reach out while sheltering in place, there are other ways to do so safely. ing in place, contact 211. If you are feeling stressed about the pandemic, you can call the Federal Disaster Distress Helpline at 800-985-5990. For general emotional support, call the California Peer-Run Warm-line at 855-8457415. Seniors can call the Yolo Healthy Aging Alliance at 530-7575583 to be matched up with someone to chat with daily. If someone contacts you about a COVID-19 related product, do not give them any money or personal information. If the caller says not to tell anyone, or that you will miss your opportunity if you don’t act quickly, that is a “red flag” that you are being scammed and you should hang up immediately. If you have been contacted through email or social media, immediately stop replying, print out all conversations, and contact your local authorities. You may call the Yolo County District Attorney’s Fraud Hotline at 855-4-YOLO-DA to get a second opinion or to report a scam call. While there are people looking to take advantage of others in this uncertain time, taking precautions and being aware of recent scams can protect you and others from being the next victim.

Yolo Hospice & CWC: COVID envy — it’s a real thing By Craig Dresang Special Contributor Shortly after the Coronavirus pandemic prompted social distancing and the cancelation of in-person gatherings, Yolo Hospice designed a series of surveys sent to more than 2,000 patients, clients, and community members around the issue of isolation. The surveys provide an anonymous and confidential space for the people most impacted by isolation to share their honest thoughts and opin-

ions. Participants are not only asked to rate their level of stress related to COVID-19, but to provide input for ways healthcare providers can help patients and families alleviate loneliness or isolation. Some of the feedback and data collected will be used to help shape future models of care, clinical practices and communication strategies. It will also be used to heighten staff awareness about the unique challenges their patients and families face during a pandemic.

As the first wave of surveys were sent out, Yolo Hospice’s bereavement manager, David Deerfeeder, was simultaneously monitoring a range of issues bubbling to the surface among the organization’s 1,000-plus bereavement clients. To his surprise, he discovered that feelings of envy are a common theme across his bereavement groups. “Envy,” says Deerfeeder, “is wanting what someone else has.” Unlike jealousy, which stems from a fear that something will be taken away, envy occurs when someone lacks a desired attribute enjoyed by another. While some people complain about being stuck with their family, spouse or parent; others wish they could be stuck with loved ones. One of Deerfeeder’s clients even said, “I feel such envy toward others who are at home with their families. I feel it very, very strongly.” The issue of envy has come up so much that Deerfeeder believes it may be impacting the general population as well. He explains, “People in the

COVID-19 risk groups may feel envy toward others who are not in those groups and who have fewer restrictions. Even without a recent death, people who live alone may envy those who have a companion. People without close family in the area may envy those who have support nearby, just for the reassurance it offers. People whose families are not supportive may envy those whose families are supportive.” Even employees who are considered essential workers are experiencing quarantine envy as they watch their friends and family enjoying time together or getting projects done during quarantine while they are busy working. Esther Boykin, CEO of Group Therapy Associates, says, “I think if you are an essential worker, it is hard to watch other people cleaning out their closets or learning how to make sourdough bread and not feel a twinge of envy or resentment.” If envy is a real issue for someone, Deerfeeder provides a handful of suggestions for how to deal with it

in a healthy way. • Acknowledge that having a feeling does not make you a good or bad person. It’s just a feeling. • Don’t ignore the feeling. Deconstruct it. What is the assumption that lies underneath it? Why do we think life is supposed to be a level playing field when the earth is full of mountains and valleys? • Something we have assumed to be true about life or about our life has been proven false. It is easier to be angry than to spend the time examining our belief systems and adjusting them to the truth. Understanding the unprofitable belief beneath the feeling can be powerful. • Ask yourself: What is the benefit in comparing myself to others? How is this helpful to me? Maybe it can be motivational. If it is not, then just stop comparing yourself to others. • Understand that what happens to you in life is not about your value as a human being. It is just a circumstance that a very valuable human being happens to be encountering at this moment.

• An admonition to be grateful may be the last thing we want to hear when we are envious. A way around that is to title a piece of paper with two columns: “My Thank-You List” and “My ThankYou Anyway List.” Jot down everything you can think of into one of those two columns. While this process will not dismiss or diminish your feelings, it may lead to some discoveries that are life-affirming. • Finally, since so many people are feeling isolated, envious and frustrated right now, help them or give them a call. Send a cheery thinking-ofyou note. Be sensitive to friends who already have challenges that create social distancing every day of their lives. What do they need right now? According to Deerfeeder, “The best thing we can do to deal with feelings of envy is to remember to be more compassionate with ourselves and also with other people as we all move through this time together.” Craig Dresang is the CEO of Yolo Hospice & Citizens Who Care.

Sometimes it is hard to be civil, but we must try I attended the city council meeting where Keep Winters Winters asked that an urban limit line for Winters be established. There was a good crowd at the Fire Station and I was expecting a long meeting. There were budget discussions first, and our council will have to make some tough decisions over the next few years as our revenue takes a hit from COVID-19. When the agenda turned to KWW I knew that I wouldn’t make it to the end of the meeting. What surprised me was the anger toward the council. Peter Hunter, whom I’ve know since he ran for school president

when he was in the eighth grade, was his usual polite self, but pushed to let the people vote this November. Yes, I voted for him for student body president and would probably vote for him again if he runs for public office. KWW’s lawyer, Robert Perlmutter, proved that this wasn’t his first council meeting as he was calm, cool and collected. William Lagattuta (Golden Bear Bill) and Bob Polkinghorn were almost yelling at the council as they demanded that the council adopt their plan, now. I thought I saw a tear forming in Councilwoman Loren’s eye. It wasn’t pretty and it

Deep in the heart of Texas Some years back, while working as a correspondent for CBS’s 48 Hours, I traveled to a small town in central Texas to tell a fascinating tale. When I say small town, I mean small. Roby, Texas makes Winters seem like Manhattan. Population around 600, one stoplight, and a cotton mill. The program I made was called “Jackpot,” for as it happened, 42 people in Roby, many of them related to one another, decided to go in together on a lottery ticket. They won. Forty-six million dollars. Suddenly, Roby was a town of millionaires. Pretty soon, the handful of streets were filled with brand new pickup trucks and farm equipment. One cotton gin worker decided that he was so lucky, he’d run for mayor. And he won that, too.

Fast forward and you might guess what happened. Many of the winners took partial payments up front. And like a lot of instant lottery millionaires, many squandered their fortunes, or discovered just how greedy their relatives really were. In the end, not surprisingly, Roby reverted back to its old self, a hardscrabble farm town smack in the middle of nowhere. I’m writing about Roby today, because I’m thinking to myself, “If I had only known.” If I had only known that if I had driven my car south down Highway 70, through the town of Sweetwater, had taken the Highway 153 cutoff, I would have ended up in Winters. Yes, there is another small town in America called Winters. Winters, Texas is not as big as Winters, California. Its population

wasn’t civil. As I sat there, I was thinking that this group that wants to be seen as the conscience of Winters, isn’t acting like they know Winters at all. Maybe that is the new face of Winters that I’m not seeing through my rose colored glasses. When the clock approached 10 p.m. I decided that I had suffered enough and went home. I heard that the meeting was continued to another date, but it was after midnight, so I made the right decision. I like to think of Winters as one big family and sometimes families fight, but most of the time everyone tries to make their point without drawing blood. I’m hoping that something can be done to appease each

Winters, Texas is down the road from Elm Creek Reservoir, where locals can fish off the Crappie dock. (That’s the name, not a description--thank you, Mr. Crappie.) The Winters Police Department seems to be an earnest bunch, all four of them including the Chief, who is a woman. She also serves as the town’s Fire Marshall. Their police cars aren’t cars. They are Chevy Silverados painted with the Winters PD logo. Their mayor is a

I am writing in response to two ideas recently put forth in our town. One is from a young farmer who accused the group Keep Winters Winters of being made up of NIMBYs. He implied that it was the voice of outside sources. First of all, if one is going to discount the voices of newcomers because they are newcomers, what precisely is their role? Are they allowed to move here only if they leave their “foreign” ideas behind? It only stands to reason the larger the town grows, the more diverse its voices will become. Next, to accuse KWW of being made up of outsiders is ludicrous. Many of its members, and supporters, were farming decades before the letter writer was even born. The focus of the group is to control, not stop, growth, and to preserve agricultural land. How is that objectionable? My second issue concerns a comment our city manager made at last week’s council meeting. Mr. Donlevy stated that agriculture really doesn’t do a lot to contribute to the City’s bank account. The comment seemed both pointed, and short sighted. What about the hundreds of Winters residents who’s livelihood is based on agriculture? What about the restaurants, wineries, brewery, supermarket, hotel and more? None of

TEXAS Continued from Page 3 woman, Lisa Yates. Their Council Members, called Aldermen, meet in chambers about half the size of ours. In photos, they all look like very serious people. From 1904, the town had a local weekly newspaper, called the Winters Enterprise. But a few years back, owing to financial difficulties, the Enterprise was absorbed by the bigger Runnels County Register. Like all good towns named Winters, there’s a local museum. It features memorabilia from baseball legend Rogers Hornsby, a Hall of Fame inductee born in 1896 in Winters, Texas. The museum also houses an extensive collection of early farm implements,

including a horsedrawn cotton picking device invented by a local Winters man. Our town has the Winters Warriors. Theirs has the Winters Blizzards, a Texas style play on words. And as in our Winters, our Texas cousins are very much concerned about their town’s economic development. In 2018, with much fanfare, Winters, Texas opened a new hotel. The old Winters Inn had been vacant for a while, until some newcomers in town purchased it, cleaned it up, and renamed it the Bliss Hotel. Again, this doesn’t seem to be a description--the owner is Jimmy Bliss. And does this sound familiar? There’s talk in Winters of building a brand new hotel, for which a local group

is seeking investors. (Advice from your sister city--make sure there’s enough parking.) As a correspondent in those days, I found myself spending quite a bit of time in Texas. Next to Florida and California, it was always the state with something odd going on. I’ve always liked the people of Texas. They are generally plain talking and decent, hardworking and proud. They remind me of a lot of people in our Winters. In fact, during those years in which Judy and I were searching for a new home far from Los Angeles, we considered moving to Texas. I’m glad it didn’t work out. We’d have never made it to Winters-the one in California.

PISANI’S ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Garrett Matheson Garrett Matheson, a 3-sport athlete at Winters High School, is the Pisani’s Athlete of the Week. Matheson will be a senior in the fall, and has competed on the swim, basketball and track and field teams since his freshman year. Swim coach Aaron Vande Wege noted this last swim season Matheson came back big from a shoulder injury. “He was able to dig deep and represent Winters in the final meet of the year as a relay team member,” Vande Wege said.
