Trokanski makes time to dance

BY KIM ORENDOR Enterprise staff writer There were weeks of silence as the once-busy rooms of the Pamela Trokanski Dance Workshop were closed by the coronavirus-induced, shelter-inplace protocols.

During that time, Pamela Trokanski was researching Zoom and working on ways to once again get her dancers dancing.

“When we first closed down, I thought it would be for just a couple of weeks,” Trokanski told The Enterprise. “But then we were closed for a long time.”

Once she mastered Zoom and adjusted classes to accommodate the internet

dancing, dance for Parkinson’s, Second Wind and Third Stage. The ballet pointe classes were postponed since instructors would not be able to give the proper correction with distance instruction.

The resumption of classes was beneficial for students and teachers alike.

“We figured out ways to do an outdoor dance recital for all our kids,” said Trokanski, whose company is celebrating 36 years of dance in Davis. “We maintained classes for Second Wind (for individuals 65-years and older). One of them said, ‘Thank you. This time is so joyous to me.’

“Connection to community is huge,” she continued.

“Pamela is so generous with the community,” she added. “The classes, the dance, my dance teacher, they are all like coming home to family, or just meeting with friends. This is a very significant kind of thing. You don’t feel isolated because you’re seeing all those familiar faces (on Zoom). It’s just very moving. … These classes are a highlight for me.”

Anibabas devoted to Solidarity Space

BY CALEB HAMPTON Enterprise staff writer Kate Mellon-Anibaba, an artist and community organizer, and her husband Suleman Anibaba, a student-athlete adviser at UC Davis, devoted much of their summer to organizing and maintaining the Solidarity Space in Davis’ Central Park, as well as facilitating events held in the space.

Following the death of George Floyd, who was killed by Minneapolis police on May 25, MellonAnibaba installed portraits in Central Park of Floyd and two other Black men killed this year by police.

As other community members brought candles, flowers and artwork, the space grew into a living memorial and a place “for those in our community to process, grieve, show support and stand in solidarity,” according to the Solidarity Space Davis Facebook page.

Events were organized in the space throughout the summer, including a community reading of

books by Black authors, a healing space for Black people to decompress and discuss self-care, and a March for Justice that drew thousands of people.

Candlelight vigils were held in the space every evening from 7:30 to 9 p.m. “I thought there needed to be a physical space for these events, this process, this grief,”

said Mellon-Anibaba. “I wanted it to be a space where people of color felt comfortable.”

Over the summer, MellonAnibaba said she observed how the space facilitated discussions about race that might not have happened without the memorial.

“There are parents intentionally bringing their children here as a

way to start that conversation.

They’re opening up a dialogue so that kids feel comfortable coming to them to talk about that kind of stuff in the future,” MellonAnibaba said. “It makes a difference to have something physical there to bring that up.”

What started as a memorial to honor George Floyd and demand

justice for Black lives lost to police violence has grown into a lasting space for community engagement. On Sept. 19, a vigil for the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in was held at the space in Central Park.

The Anibabas are also at work on a permanent public art project to honor Black lives in Davis.

From Page 2 the program because anyone who knows Trokanski knows that she is a stickler for rules and protocols.

“In the past, I’ve made people cranky with rules,” she said with a slight laugh.

“No one is too special for the rules. Parents felt safe because they know I’m following protocol.”

The camp was a success, and she is running another one as an afterschool program from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. for children ages 6 to 12.

While she is able to connect with dancers online, after months of separation even this self-confessed introvert is ready for some personal interactions.

“What do I miss? It’s connection,” she said. “That’s the thing that totally surprised me. In my personal life, I’m an intensely shy person. I’m the one that when I go to a party I go to the kitchen to try to wash dishes.

“I was so surprised at how joyous I felt when I could see students on Zoom. I was again surprised at how my heart was full of joy. When the meeting ends, I hate to push the button and end the meeting. I love moving. Moving calms me down; it destresses me. It’s good for my

For a number of dancers in classes, dance is also about mental and physical health. The Second Wind and multigenerational Third Act classes give senior citizens a chance to connect with others and stay physically active.

“I think, working on dance, that helped me feel alive, and that’s what Second Wind does for so many people,” Silberstein said.

“Dance has been so important for my health and wellbeing. I still feel like dancing at 89 and, as I get older, movement becomes even more awesome.”

UCD scientist on frontlines of COVID-19 research

Koen Van Rompay is the founder and director of the nonprofit organization Sahaya International. Van Rompay originally started Sahaya to support HIVinfected children and AIDS orphans in South India.

Since then, the organization has grown and expanded.

A longtime Davis resident originally from Belgium, Van Rompay’s work with Sahaya International was the subject of the documentary “Sahaya Going Beyond” narrated by the award-winning actor

Jeremy Irons.

The documentary tells Sahaya’s story, beginning with the life-changing trip Van Rompay made to India in 1997. Already a renowned infectious disease specialist — he helped develop one of the most widely used antiretroviral drugs to prevent the transmission of HIV — Van Rompay went to India for a research conference on the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

health care,” Irons says in the documentary. Within a couple of years, Van Rompay founded Sahaya.

Two decades later, Sahaya has supported schools, special needs programs, women’s microfinance groups, orphanages, housing programs and public health projects in India, Kenya, Vietnam and the Philippines by partnering with local groups around the world.

The nonprofit has an overhead of zero, meaning that every penny Sahaya raises goes directly into its projects. That is made possible by the time and work

by Van Rompay and his team of volunteers. Since 1999, Sahaya has raised nearly $4 million from more than 2,000 donors.

Meanwhile, in his position as core scientist in the Infectious Disease Unit at the California National Primate Research Center at UC Davis, Van Rompay is on the front lines of COVID-19 research, leading the efforts at UC Davis to test for novel therapeutics and vaccines.

Were it not for the headsup, creative efforts of the Davis Downtown Business Association several months ago, the city core so many Davisites have come to know and love over the years would probably look a whole lot different.

Back in April, the DDBA launched a gift-card stimulus program — a plan that breathed life back into what had been an otherwise sleepy downtown scene for weeks beforehand.

Through gift purchases that were matched dollarfor-dollar (thanks to $50,000 in contributions from both the DDBA and the city of Davis) within its first 50 hours, nearly $150,000 had been redirected to local businesses.

A few weeks later, with the help of donors, it took less than four hours for an

additional $50,000 to be infused back into the Davis economy.

And for so many local shop owners (many of whom had been forced to close their doors in compliance with safety mandates), those stimulus funds rolled in at a critical time, while they waited for approval on Paycheck Protection Program loans from the federal government.

As state and county mandates have fluctuated, it’s been my job to go out and take pictures of local businesses for The Enterprise to keep our readers apprised.

So, naturally, I end up speaking with a lot of these business owners.

And so many of them, unprompted, in casual conversations have brought up the stimulus program, and more specifically, DDBA executive director Brett Maresca and marketing coordinator Aaron Wedra.

One I remember chatting with was Jerry Paiz, the owner of the Style Lounge at 305 D St. Finally able to reopen his doors, he heaped praise on the two, calling the DDBA stimulus program “the shot in the arm” he and so many neighboring businesses needed.

And while Maresca and Wedra could’ve easily given themselves a pat on the back following that successful gift-card program, the two kept their noses to the grindstone throughout May, partnering with the city to modify and expand downtown restaurants and salon service capacities by unlocking the use of space on sidewalks, parking spaces and even streets.

Davis Police, Fire experience unprecedented front line crises

BY LAUREN KEENE Enterprise staff writer The COVID-19 pandemic forced many professions into work-at-home mode.

First responders, however, never got that option, remaining on the front lines as coronavirus continued its rampage.

Then came major issues ranging from protests against police brutality and racial injustice to California’s history-making wildfire destruction, making 2020 a year like no other for agencies such as the Davis police and fire departments.

“This is unprecedented,” Davis Police Chief Darren Pytel said back in March, shortly after Yolo County officials issued an emergency shelter-in-place order in response to the pandemic.

“We’ve never experienced anything quite like this in terms of making several layers of contingency plans.

“The closest I can think of is (the Y2K scare), and that pales in comparison to this,” Pytel said.

While the shelter-in-place order slowed down the usual calls for service for a time, police found themselves responding to a new crop of reports — those of people ignoring socialdistancing guidelines and non-essential businesses operating despite the county’s shutdown rules.

In late May came the death of George Floyd, a Black man who died in Minneapolis police custody after an officer kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes. That led to protests nationwide, including several in Davis.

Speaking before the Davis Police Accountability Commission in early June, Pytel called Floyd’s death “tragic” and “horrifying” during a talk outlining his own department’s use-offorce policies, which at the time included carotid control holds to the neck in situations where other forms of deadly force aren’t available.

But Pytel reversed course just five days later, announcing that “due to the potential for inflicting unintended serious bodily injury, officers shall not use chokeholds, strangleholds, lateral vascular neck restraints, carotid restraints, chest compressions, or any other tactics that restrict oxygen or blood flow to the head or neck.”

“It also reflects changes to basic academy training that is being immediately implemented by order of the governor.”

Pytel’s decision received widespread community praise, from City Hall to local citizens’ groups.

Meanwhile, Davis firefighters also found themselves on the forefront of far more than its typical roster of structure fires, medical emergencies, vehicle collisions and other community aid.

There was the coronavirus health crisis, which brought the need for utmost caution in every public contact in case those receiving aid showed signs of infection. Four firefighters ultimately contracted the virus,

including Capt. Luis Parilla, who spent about two weeks hospitalized and in isolation from his family.

“We’re preparing for the potential of a surge of people who are sick,” communicating with local hospitals as they gear up for their own influx of patients, Davis Fire Chief Joe Tenney said back in March. “There have been people with flu-like symptoms, and we are being careful. Our hope is to keep it outside.”

As Parilla battled coronavirus, he took his story public — warning others to take COVID-19 seriously, even the young and healthy.

“This virus is no joke,” Parrilla said in an April interview. “I didn’t think I was going to get it, and I got it. Any one of us can get it.”

The late summer brought another firefighting crisis — the wildfire season, which so far has proved to be the most destructive in California history as more than

3 million acres burned across the state.

Local firefighters heeded the call for help, sending strike teams to fire zones in both Northern and Southern California, where they were stationed for stretches as long as two weeks as fire crews struggled to control the blazes, many of them amid scorching temperatures and strong, erratic winds.

“In times like these, I am reminded of all that I am thankful for,” Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor wrote on social media on Aug. 19, two days after lightning sparked the LNU Lightning Complex Fire that affected five counties, including Yolo.

“I am thankful for the dedication of people helping people,” Saylor said.

“Thankful for first responders on the lines. For the people who are working to support them.”

Tree Davis plants the urban forest

Tree Davis isn’t necessarily the very first local organization that new arrivals to Davis are likely to hear about as they get acquainted with newfound friends and neighbors.

But as they settle into the community, most new arrivals eventually find out about the local nonprofit group called Tree Davis.

Trees benefit people in many ways. They provide welcome shade for homes, which makes homes and yards cooler and more comfortable during summer.

Trees also help keep the air and water clean.

But trees don’t just appear, as if by magic. It takes a community effort to plant and care for the hundreds of trees that make up what’s known as an “urban forest.”

Which is why Tree Davis was organized nearly three decades ago. Since Tree Davis was launched in 1992, the group has been quietly planting trees that now provide shade and greenery in countless front yards and sidewalks all over town, as well as at local schools and other locations.

It’s a long-term strategy aimed at keeping Davis streets and neighborhoods green — and a bit cooler during summer — by planting trees that provide inviting pockets of shade.

“We’ve planted over 12,000 trees across Yolo County,” said Erin Donoly Marineau, executive director of Tree Davis. And more

“And we give these trees away” to appropriate recipients, she continued, through what is known as the Tree Davis Community Canopy program. Anyone within Davis city limits is eligible to apply. You can start the process by filling out a webform on the Tree Davis website, www.Tree Davis.org.

Tree Davis doesn’t place just any old sapling in a hole in the ground. Tree Davis picks hardy varieties that are appropriate for the climate here, which can include a lot of rain during

the winter but also many weeks of hot, dry weather in the summer.

These are trees like the Texas Red Oak, Kentucky Coffee Tree, Persian Ironwood, White Shield Osage Orange, and others that are “likely to thrive in the expected climate conditions over the next 50 years” as the local weather changes due to anticipated global warming, according to Marineau.

It’s all part of the longterm strategy that Tree Davis continues to quietly pursue. “If trees are planted and tended correctly, the trees can live 150 years or more,” Marineau added.

“These trees are going to outlive us.”

Fall is the season when the new trees go in the ground.

“We can’t plant during the summer, it’s too hot,” Marineau said. “But as we transition into fall, we try to get as many trees into the ground as possible.”

Make it Happen fosters independent living

BY ANNE TERNUS-BELLAMY Enterprise staff writer J Cortez remembers his first place: It was furnished with a couch given to him by a friend.

Unlike most young adults who head out on their own laden with hand-me-down furniture and other household goods their parents provide, Cortez was an emancipated minor, essentially on his own.

“You have a place to come home to, but nothing else,” he told the Enterprise back in 2017. “You need

everything. You literally have nothing.”

By his final year of undergrad at UC Davis three years ago, Cortez was assisting other young adults who had come up through the foster-care system like him.

And while many of these transition-aged youths receive government assistance to help cover things like rent, most need help turning that apartment or rented room into something resembling a home.

Formed in 2014, the nonprofit assists Yolo County’s transition-aged youths as they enter independent living by providing

everything from beds, dressers and desks to vacuum cleaners, cookware, cleaning supplies and more.

Make it Happen depends on local residents to donate gently used furniture and accessories as well as to purchase new items like mattresses and box springs.

Monetary donations also cover the cost of storage sheds where everything is stored until those being assisted can come select what they need.

Many of them, Cortez said, don’t even realize how much they need.

“They’re so happy just to have a roof,” he said, “they’ll sleep on the floor.”

One young man was

thrilled to have a bed and a microwave and said he didn’t need anything else — until he was reminded he needed lamps, cleaning supplies, bath towels and utensils.

That need is what inspired Jan Judson, a longtime volunteer with California Youth Connection, and others to form Make it Happen in 2014.

“As I gained more knowledge about the challenges faced by foster youth,” Judson said in 2017, “I realized the need for those moving into independent living situations.”

and again stimulated downtown businesses during what’s been the toughest six-month stretch many of them have ever experienced.

“This (situation) has opened peoples’ eyes to how fragile things are,” Maresca told me back in May. “These are the livelihoods of so many families in town and what makes our community thrive.

“And if we lose that, we’re going to lose a big part of our identity as a city.”

Both local business owners themselves, Maresca and Wedra love this community.

strategic-design campaigns for individuals and organizations. Likewise, Maresca and his wife Yelena have operated Boheme Hip Used Clothing at 409 Third St. since 2015.

And as someone who’s worked with Wedra, I can attest to just how selfless of an individual he is. Others have told me the same of Maresca.

Our small town is better off because of them.

Since 1944, the city of Davis has honored a Citizen of the Year with the C.A. Covell award — named for the longtime mayor of Davis, Calvin Arthur Covell, whose surname now graces one of our town’s main thoroughfares. The honor is presented to someone who has demonstrated outstanding service to the community, over time, in a number of areas.

I’ve never felt compelled to submit a name before.

But this year, there’s no question.

Davis Schools Foundation focuses on students’ well being

BY JEFF HUDSON Enterprise staff writer Davis residents tend to be proud of their public school system. And families with children that move to Davis frequently cite the local schools as one of the most important reasons they decided to move here, even though Davis home prices are generally higher than in other nearby communities.

But state funding isn’t sufficient to sustain the kind of broad, robust curriculum and diverse academic offerings that the Davis schools have offered for decades.

The nonprofit Davis Schools Foundation raises money to benefit school programs that promote student well-being and enhance the educational experience of all K-12 students in the Davis Joint Unified School District. The foundation works in partnership with families, educators, school staff and community members, and provides annual grants to DJUSD that bolster, support and sustain district-wide student programs and services that would not be possible with public funds alone.

Ryan Davis, a local parent who serves as president of the foundation, says, “Education is certainly a priority in the community, and since the foundation was launched in 2004, we have raised over $3 million to fund additional instructional aides, counseling services, computer labs, librarians, a special education program specialist, school music programs, outdoor education, and much more, thanks to the generous support of our donors.”

The foundation has a broad, equitable mission serving the entire school district, whereas the individual school PTAs and parent booster groups typically support one particular school or one particular special program in the district.

Davis said the foundation’s district-wide reach helps “leverage funds that we raise from across the community. We respond to budget crises that are happening to the whole school district. ... We make sure our funds go to where they are needed most.”

With the coronavirus pandemic still underway, “We think this is a critical time to focus on the district’s goals.” That includes the “social and emotional well-being of all students ... especially given the stresses caused by the pandemic and the implementation of distance learning,” Davis said. “We want to ensure that all students have access to the tools they need.”

“In addition, some of our funds are being used for training in the school district’s mindfulness curriculum and anti-bullying programs.”

The foundation also helps fund critical technology upgrades at

various schools to ensure equitable access for successful distance learning. This can include helping to provide additional Chromebooks for students to use, as well as helping to provide students with reliable, speedy internet access.

Other current funding priorities for the foundation include supporting mental health programs and counseling services to enable students to thrive both inside and outside the classroom, and helping to equip district faculty and staff with the numerous resources they

need to continue providing highquality education in safe and supportive school environments.

Davis added that the foundation has “revamped our mission statement, now very focused on social and emotional well-being for all students, given the stresses caused by pandemic and distance learnings. We think this is a critical time to do this.”

When the pandemic wanes, the foundation will be considering ways to support students as they start transitioning from distance

learning back to in-classroom learning.

The Davis Schools Foundation was formed in 2004 — a time when the Davis district was being threatened by dramatic program cuts due to reductions in state funding. Because of the dramatic ups and downs in state funding, community leaders decided to organize the Davis Schools Foundation to develop a more reliable source of funding to help stabilize and support otherwise endangered local school programs.

Q Yolo Hospice serves individuals experiencing lifelimiting and altering illnesses, their families and loved ones. Its highly trained interdisciplinary team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, an all-registerednurse staff, masters-trained social workers, spiritual care counselors, certified nursing assistants, bereavement specialists and an everexpanding cadre of committed volunteers. Citizens Who Care provides support for caregivers and for individuals with a life limiting illness.

The organization merged with Yolo Hospice in 2018 and served as the impetus for the creation of the only Adult Day Program, Galileo Place in Yolo County. CWC volunteers provide caregiver respite and friendly visits to seniors in their homes and at elder care facilities.

Lorenson: Handling what is thrown at Devil athletics

BY BRUCE GALLAUDET Enterprise staff writer In his five-year stint as director of athletics at UC Davis, Kevin Blue’s department has a list of accomplishments ranging from implementing Aggie EVO (a career-launch program for student-athletes) to introducing a far-reaching diversity, equity and

inclusion road map and on to being the catalyst in a $52 million performance and sports medicine facility on campus.

He helped launch the Myra Welch Initiative in support of UCD women’s facilities projects — the first of which was the rehabilitation of softball’s La Rue Field.

According to documents

on national websites, Blue has emerged as a leader on issues like rising expenses in college athletics, case studies in generating revenue and seeing athletics, as Blue once said, “as real opportunities to go forward in real life ... not just getting a degree.”

His hiring of former

It’s tough enough being an athletic director in high school under normal circumstances.

But imagine being in charge at a place like Davis High, where more than 25 varsity teams demand your attention. It’s a school where athletic excellence has meant earning more Sac-Joaquin Section titles than any other school in the region. Plus, Blue Devils are in an environment in which attention to academics takes a front-row seat among its student-athletes.

For DHS Athletic Director Jeff Lorenson, a “normal” day can present herculean tasks.

In these days of COVID19, the well-being of those student-athletes means keeping them from harm’s way during the pandemic.

While Lorenson joined Devil coaches and section officials in rescheduling the

Hawkins is a former UCD fullback. As coach, he sent Davis to its first-ever Division I playoff appearance.

These days, however, while college sports lives in a world of limbo, Blue and his staff have been charged with keeping those athletes who have found their ways to town safe and isolated from the physical and mental assaults of COVID-19.

All fall sports for the Aggies have been pushing into 2021 while basketball’s Nov. 10 start has been delayed another two weeks.

With constantly changing schedules, Blue and Company have had to scramble to keep coaches and their charges informed and energized about what’s to come.

Before landing in Davis, Blue spent seven years as its senior associate athletics director for external relations. Before that, he captained the Cardinal golf team while earning his bachelor’s degree. A doctorate in sports psychology at Michigan State followed.

Aside from the myriad conference titles earned by Aggie teams under Blue’s watchful eye, it’s things like the improved facilities, the attention to equity and equality and the graduation

success rates and academic progress rates (campus officials report each are at alltime highs for UCD) of which Blue remains especially proud.

Says a line in Blue’s UC Davis’ official biography ...

“A focus of UC Davis athletics under Blue is to establish itself as the best athletic program in the country at preparing student-athletes to obtain excellent jobs and graduate school with opportunities following college.”

But as antsy as most California college programs are to start up again, monitoring the ever-changing COVID landscape has become priority No. 1 for Kevin Blue.

Lorenson grew up in Minnesota and graduated from Bemidij State University (Minnesota) where he was a standout in basketball.

Lorenson and his wife Christi moved west to be near her family in Manteca.

They have two children, Kalynn, 12, and Jaxson, 8.

Lorenson first worked as a personal trainer in California and then turned to teaching in Fairfield before beginning his athletic administration career at Esparto.

Even as he keeps one eye on the safeguards required

during the pandemic, Lorenson knows that — because of Davis High’s success in so many other areas on and off the field — schools could look to the local campus for ideas on how to deal with the coronavirus and the ever-changing landscape of what is allowed and what isn’t by public health officials.

Lorenson credits his coaches in making transitions to COVID-era schedules and practice compliances “seamless.”

Shortly after being hired to replace one-time AD Dennis Foster more than six years ago, Lorenson indicated with one clear statement that he had a handle on the job.

In the previous decade, DHS had gone through six athletic directors while still maintaining its sports-arena excellence.

“I’m not here to change things,” Lorenson told The Enterprise at the time. “I’m here to foster a feeling of stability.

“We lead by example. ... As a leader for the athletic programs, holding myself to the utmost standards is a key.”

With the new Delta League schedules complete, current report-to-practice protocols being followed — and everybody finding a place to work out in small, outdoor pods — even the most acute observer would have to say, “Mission accomplished, Blue Devils.”

Yolo Food Bank serves 60K each month

BY LAUREN KEENE Enterprise staff writer When Ann Peterson retired from the energy industry, the longtime Davis resident began looking for volunteer work that got her out into the community, “something that wasn’t behind a computer,” she said.

That led to fulfilling roles, such as a volunteer doula for Sutter Davis Hospital and a yoga instructor for Empower Yolo, which serves victims of domestic violence. Then came COVID-19, which curtailed some of those activities.

“I was looking for new opportunities,” said Peterson, who along with her husband, Marc Hoeschele, developed an interest in issues such as securing food availability and decreasing food waste.

“The food issue is so important, with people losing their jobs and benefits running out.”

That, in turn, turned the couple to the Yolo Food Bank, which kicked into high gear last spring as the pandemic increased emergency food needs countywide.

Together, they spend several days a week sorting, packing and distributing food to those who need it most.

“It feels like an important thing to do right now,” Peterson said.

“We’re grateful to have this kind of organization in our community.”

While many service organizations have seen their volunteer numbers shrink as the pandemic forced many to shelter in place, the Food Bank has experienced the opposite — growing from

around 300 to more than 2,000 volunteers, roughly half of them from the city of Davis.

They come from a wide range of ages and backgrounds, sharing a common desire to stay productive while also giving back to their communities.

“It’s really amazing,” said Yasmin Frausto, Yolo Food Bank’s

volunteer coordinator. “They’re finding this a great way to remain active and also lend an extra hand.

They’re selfless and focused on those that are most vulnerable.”

More than 100 grocers and retailers, farmers, distributors and others have pitched in as well, contributing several million pounds of food to the cause.

At last count, the Food Bank served an estimated 60,000 residents throughout the county each month with services such as contact-free drive-through and socially distanced walk-up food distribution sites, meal preparation and distribution for the unhoused and home deliveries for those most at risk of exposure.

And with no clear end to the pandemic in sight, those needs likely won’t dwindle anytime soon.

“We still have our eye on this as a multi-year impact on our community and the food security needs of the county,” said Joy Cohan, the Food Bank’s director of philanthropic engagement. Even when the current health crisis comes to an end, “the economic impacts upon Yolo County are going to be upon us for some time after that.”

For the last 47 years, Blake’s Heating and Air Conditioning has served Yolo and Solano County residents when it comes to HVAC and gutter replacements needs.

Owner Mark Blake, a Davis High graduate who began working for his father’s business back in 1982, credits Blake’s success to “hiring key employees that are very good and surrounding myself with good people.”

Whether it’s bike rides to local coffeehouse Steady Eddy’s or the “4 Bumps” ride featuring 33 miles and 2,200 feet of climbing, look at the Davis Bike Club’s calendar of events and, in a normal year, you’ll come across one word all summer long: Winters.

Lately, biking to Winters has really kicked into gear.

Downtown Winters, on Main Street and east of Railroad Avenue, has become a convenient place for cyclists to convene.

Whether it’s the destination or just a starting point, the small semi-rural town west of Davis seems to feature everything a biker needs.

“I’ve seen people biking to Winters for a long time,”

said Winters councilmember and Mayor Pro Tem Bill Biasi. “It seems to be more popular than it used to be.

It’s growing, definitely.”

In 2018, the Davis Bike Club purchased, helped install, and dedicated four bike racks, in memory of Walt Little, outside Steady Eddy’s, already a popular place for cyclists to convene. The racks seem to be just yet another reason for cyclists to meet there.

“One of the key ingredients is that we’re really a quick stop,” says Steady Eddy’s owner Carla Wroten noting her local coffee roaster’s clean and available bathrooms, free and copious water and healthy food options. “Most of them get a cup of coffee or a quick bar or scone then can keep on riding,” she says.

“It’s not really hilly,” says Jesse, a Davis biker arriving at the coffee shop for a bathroom break and describing his trip onward to Lake Solano. “The wind is kind of like a hill,” he later admits. “I like the quiet.”

For others who want to launch a quiet trek from Winters to bike in its orchards, visit Lake Solano County Park or venture to climb Scenic Highway 128 all the way to Lake Berryessa, a free public parking lot at the Winters Community Center is a popular starting point.

Velo City Bicycle Center, Winters’ only bike shop, recently moved across the street from it and stays open on the weekends.

Bring your pump,” she advises. “I would never, ever wear earbuds,” Amy adds, mentioning the road risks of distracted biking.

Amy’s friend Mark describes how it feels to bike down Russell Boulevard, perhaps the most popular way to reach Winters from Davis, in single file, while cars pass at speeds near 60 mph: he likens it to driving in an old jalopy and getting passed by sports cars. “People who don’t ride bicycles don’t understand what it’s

“I think the people in Winters are accustomed to the bikers on Putah Creek Road,” Biasi said. “We’ve seen them for years. We try to be courteous and go around safely.”

Local businesses like Steady Eddy’s, Velo City and new brewery Hooby’s Brewing hope to keep cyclists in Winters once they finish.

“They’ll bike and come have a beer when they’re done,” notes Hooby’s Courtney Stocking. “They worked out, so they deserve it.”

“I think that they are very good to us,” says Steady Eddy’s Wroten. “We know that they’re a big part of our customer base.”

Q The Yolo Interfaith Immigration Network is a nonprofit grass roots group whose mission is to serve and advocate for immigrants in Yolo County. YIIN offers a variety of programs and services, including a summer program (DIAS) for youth, children and adults at the Madison Migrant Center near Esparto and the Davis Migrant Center, providing rent payment assistance to immigrants (through a project called ApoYOLO) affected by the pandemic, and educational forums to the broader community about the challenges for those affected by immigration policies and practices. YIIN also works with other organizations to provide financial assistance to immigrants seeking legal status, food gift cards and application fees for DACA recipients. Q The Yolo Land Trust has a simple but vital mission: To permanently conserve farmland in Yolo County. During its 30-year history, it has helped more than 65 families preserve their farms forever. Despite challenges, Davis comes together

O

n behalf of UC Davis, I’d like to give everyone a big Aggie welcome as we prepare to start fall quarter!

Of course, 2020 is a year like no other. We’ve entered a “new normal” of physical distancing and mask wearing as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. We’ve also faced waves of social unrest in the streets and wildfires that clouded the air with smoke.

But through all the challenges and disruption, I’ve seen people come together like never before. That’s what it means to live in Davis, that we look for ways to help in times of need.

I’ve seen people volunteering to deliver food to the elderly and those in our most vulnerable communities. I’ve seen people rush to start donation drives and lend assistance to those affected by wildfires.

At UC Davis, I’ve seen our campus Fire Department and our School of Veterinary

Medicine head straight to the fires’ frontlines to help people and animals. And all across campus, I’ve seen researchers determined to be part of the COVID-19 solution with vaccine trials, innovations in manufacturing personal protective equipment and so much more.

H

ow fortunate we are to be part of a community where helpers and heroes are all around.

I have no doubt that we’ll get through these times and emerge stronger. This will take a profound sense of teamwork and collaboration, but I believe we’re on the right track.

At UC Davis, we continue to work closely with city leaders and public health officials so our campus and our community can be as safe as possible. One example is Healthy Davis Together, a new initiative between UC Davis, the city and Yolo County to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in our community. It’s an ambitious and coordinated effort that includes public health messages, increased COVID-19 screening and other measures to help change behaviors and lower the risk of spread.

Every day is our chance to be helpers and heroes. By continuing to wear masks, following physical distancing guidelines and respecting the health of others, we can help make COVID-19 a thing of the past.

Let’s make this a great year and continue to look out for one another. Go Ags! And Go city of Davis!

The Yolo County Fair was cancelled this year, but if you miss the carnival rides

you might try Velocity Island Park at 755 North East St. for some water rides. You need to book ahead and follow pandemic guidelines, but you’ll have the chance to swim and ride wake boards and paddle boards under the guidance of an enthusiastic staff who want you to have a memorable time.

Although most restaurants have reduced hours and stepped back to take-out and delivery only, Anoop and Bikram Kang opened a new Arby’s at 85 West Court St. in mid-September.
