Davis Visitor’s Guide
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9, 2021
The best place on earth When the first American settlers came to California, one of the first places they setup camp was right here in Yolo County. For good reason. Davis, California is nestled between the Sierras and the Bay, some of nature’s most splended creations. It’s one of the most bountiful places in America, first in agriculture and also now in culture itself. Its treasured location is second only to the treasure that is its settlers. In publishing the Davis Visitor’s Guide, powered by our new adventure website (https://yolo.directory), our goal is to get you and your guests to explore Davis beyond your backyard. As we are spoiled with the plenitude of nature, so too are we spoiled with an abundance of cultural options. Contained in these pages are just a small smattering of the myriad activities around town, but with each section comes a QR code you can use to explore further. To use them, pull out your smartphone’s camera and focus it on the page. In 2021, we are now in a position to newly appreciate all that we have. Let’s go forth and enjoy our city and its residents for all they have to offer.

What makes lodging family-friendly?
V
acations to and from Davis have long been a great way for families to spend time together and build memories that will last a lifetime. Research shows that this tradition is alive and going strong. Research from AAA Travel found that 88 million residents of the United States planned to take family vacations in 2018. The allure of overseas destinations is seemingly increasing, as AAA noted that 35 percent of the families who planned to vacation in 2018 intended to visit an international destination. That marked a 9 percent increase from the year prior.

When looking for familyfriendly lodging, parents should keep in mind that the location of the facility can be just as important as what it offers. A remote hotel or rental house might provide the solitude and respite parents are looking for, but such spots might not be best for families. If you’re planning on doing lots of sightseeing, then lodging that’s close to local sights and highways can save you from spending much of your vacation enduring lengthy car trips. Kids likely won’t appreciate such trips.
Accomodations
Modern families aren’t just vacationing; they are vacationing
more often than they used to. AAA found that 27 percent of traveling families intended to take three or more family vacations in the next 12 months. One way for budget-conscious families to make that possible is to cut costs on each trip. All-inclusive resorts, in which the costs of family meals are included, or lodging that includes kitchens or kitchenettes, private patios to grill nightly meals and refrigerators large enough to store essentials like milk and eggs can help parents save on meals out on the town. That’s no small consideration, as a recent Consumer Expenditure Survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that food and alcohol accounted for the second greatest vacation expense for domestic trips and the third highest expense for international travelers.
Activities
Many resorts provide a host of family-friendly activities that are included in the cost of the lodging. Private rentals or lodging booked through companies such as Airbnb are less likely to include such perks. Even hotels without extensive kid-friendly offerings may still have pools and/or private beach access that are free to guests. These present lots of activities for families at no additional cost, making them especially valuable options.

Information Art Walks
One way Davis likes to liven up its landscapes and neighborhoods is through public art. Playful sculptures, functional pieces like a wall or a clock, and much more adorn the downtown area, shopping centers, parks, greenbelts and buildings throughout Davis. Local businesses combine efforts for a festive evening on the second Friday of each month. For each Second Friday ArtAbout, businesses welcome visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. and host exhibits where people can meet artists and enjoy music and refreshments. The community’s outdoor and indoor public art is available all the time for people to see — and, in some cases, to climb on. For example, a stroll through downtown might take you past “The
Joggers” at Third and F streets, “Solar Intersections” at the train depot, “Clepsydra” clock and water feature on the E Street Plaza or the many pieces in Central Park. And public art is in every other corner of Davis ... just look around! * More information: A public art walking tour guide can be picked up at the Yolo County Visitors’ Bureau at 132 E St., Suite 200, Davis. Davis also boasts a transmedia sculpture walk, where each sculpture has a radio frequency identification technology chip embedded into it over which participants may wave their cell phones to interactively learn about each work of art. * Location: Pick up a map at John Natsoulas Center for the Arts, 521 First St., Davis

Bat talks
At the beginning of every June, 250,000 Mexican free-tailed bats — one of this species’ largest colonies in California — migrate to the 3-mile-long Yolo Causeway for some quality hunting. All of them sleep during the day in the bridge’s expansion joints, crevices that are about 12 inches deep, directly beneath causeway traffic. The spectacle is at sunset, when all 250,000 branch out into the twilight sky, one group at a time, to find food. Join the Yolo Basin Foundation
Davis takes its reputation as the bicycle capital of the country seriously, and there are many ways this town proves its loyalty to pedal power. It has earned the title of “America’s Best Bicycling City” because of its high volume of bicycle use, its renowned system of bikeways and cyclist-friendly facilities, and supportive city and university programs. There are 125 miles of bike lanes and bike paths within city limits. Bike paths along greenbelts, in city parks, on campus and along the UC Davis Arboretum make bicycling a pleasant, leisurely activity
with beautiful scenery. The Davis Bike Club also has created route maps, offering more than 20 bike rides, with routes including Davis, Winters, Woodland, Clarksburg, the Capay Valley and beyond. The route maps and “cue sheets” — the detailed descriptions of how to ride from here to there — are available through the Davis Bike Club website — davisbikeclub.org. * More information: For even more bike-related information, resources and laws, plus a detailed bike map, call UC Davis Transportation and Parking Services at 530-752-BIKE (8277); visit the city of Davis Department of Public Works, 23 Russell Blvd.; or visit Yolo County Visitors Bureau, 132 E St., Suite 200, Davis

peratures of up to 75 degrees in the summer, making it an ideal place for water sports. Anglers enjoy fishing for coldand warm-water species, such as rainbow trout, bass and catfish. One of the largest bodies of fresh water in California, Lake Berryessa is 26 miles long by 3 miles wide, with 165 miles of shoreline. An unusual feature of the lake is the spillway or “glory hole” above the Monticello Dam, a concrete funnel that drains excess water. The Bureau of Reclamation provides two large day-use areas (Oak Shores and Smittle Creek), Capell Cove launch ramp and many smaller dispersed day-use areas. The seven resorts around the lake are managed by concessionaires under contract with Reclamation and provide camping, day-use and boating facilities. The Monticello Dam area at the southeast corner of the lake is one of the best local birding areas. The best time to visit for birding is in early spring and late fall during migration and nesting seasons. Look for eagles, hawks, songbirds, wild turkeys, Canada geese, pelicans and great blue herons, among others. * Location: Lake Berryessa is 40 miles west of Sacramento. Nearest towns are Napa to the southwest or Winters to the east. Nearest highways are state Highways 121 and 128. * More information: 707-9662111; recreation.gov
Camping
Yolo County’s public parks, which total 2,300 acres, are spread out over the county’s 1,024 square miles. Some span hundreds of acres, offer dozens of campsites and boast oak trees older than the United States. “It’s everything from Elkhorn Regional Park along the Sacramento River to parks on Cache Creek, parks on Putah Creek,

parks in the mountains, parks in the grasslands,” said Andrew Fulks of Tuleyome, a Woodland-based environmental group. “They really showcase all that Yolo County is. There’s a little bit of everything.” For campers, 685-acre Cache Creek Canyon Regional Park has 45 individual campsites, four large group camp sites, two restroom buildings, a general store, large turf areas, a playground, numerous picnic tables, a day-use parking area (parking fee required), and rural pedestrian access to Cache Creek. These public parks offer the county’s 215,000 residents — and the 2.7 million people in the Sacramento region — a way to relax, play and adventure. County officials want more people, including outsiders, to camp, fish, hike and boat in Yolo County. * More information: yolocounty. org

Double-decker buses
In 1968, Unitrans, UC Davis’ bus system, purchased vintage double-decker buses from London and brought them to Davis to start a bus system. Over time, Unitrans added 10 more of the vintage buses, although only a few run now. To catch a ride on one of the iconic buses during the academic year, take the E-line (downtown, F and J streets); or the F-line (Oak Avenue, Alvarado Avenue (east) and Catalina Drive). Dog parks
Toad Hollow Dog Park generally is the place to be for Davis’ fourlegged friends. This 2.5-acre fully fenced park — at 1919 Second St., Davis — provides plenty of room for your dog to play, and it includes a fenced small-dog area, too. Parking is available at the park and along Second Street next to the park. Your dog must be on leash from the parking area until you enter the park. Drinking foun-
Yolo County is agricultural land, and there are many ways to get out and experience it. As Yolo County Supervisor Don Saylor explained, “Yolo County plays a unique role in our region. When we talk about a ‘farm to fork’ effort in the Sacramento region, more often than not, the farm is in Yolo County. “Our county’s climate, soil, talent and research create one of the finest agricultural settings in the world. Many of us are fortunate to shop at some of the best farmers markets in the nation, shop at grocery stores that stock produce from local farms and subscribe to Community Supported Agriculture programs.”

Hiking
Spring-fed waterfalls cascading over shadowy caverns, pockets of wetlands with turtles floating undisturbed and the fur of black bears shimmering in the sunlight as they move swiftly along river banks. Recounted by Andrew Fulks, who manages UC Davis’ Putah Creek Riparian Reserve, these adventures actually are close to home. Fulks has worked to inform, protect and expand opportunities in local nature. And the local outdoorsman shares his journeys from the Blue Ridge trail off Highway 16 to a route leading into Pierce Canyon Falls. * More information: Detailed descriptions of nearby hikes are listed on the Tuleyome Trails page at tuleyome.org/index.php/getoutside/tuleyome-trails, or yolohiker.org

Cache Creek is part of the wild and scenic California water system. It is one of the major rivers in Yolo County, flowing southeast from Clear Lake through U.S. Bureau of Land Management land and then along Highway 16. The wilderness area has the second largest populations of bald eagles and tule elk in California. For most recreational boaters, Cache Creek is run in two sections in the upper canyon above Rumsey. The first section is known as the “Fun Run.” Boaters put in at Yolo County’s Cache Creek Canyon Regional Park Upper Site or just over the county line at the confluence with Bear Creek. This segment of river is popular with people looking for Class II and III whitewater. The proximity to Woodland and Davis means the fun run can be done as a half-day outing. Time on the water is usually two to three hours. The best place to take out from the water is at Camp Haswell County Park, upstream from Rumsey. Various outfitters rent all the gear needed, as well as provide transportation and lunch along the river. * More information: californiawhitewater.com/rivers/cachecreek
