TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — U.S. airmen assigned to the 60th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron partnered with service members from UC Davis Health, California, to hone in Aeromedical Evacuation and Critical Care Air Transport Team procedures, at Travis Air Force Base, March 22. The integration advanced medical care capabilities for the two units to work more cohesively in the case of future mass casualty personnel movements. “Today, we are trying to take the most up to date information and applying it in this training environment,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Melinda Corallo, 60th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron clinical management flight commander. “Integrating training like this is important. We have competing interests with Critical Care Air Transport Team where we can assist each other.” The Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron personnel are the subject matter experts of the aircraft’s electrical and oxygen capabilities while Critical Care Air Transport Team personnel are the intensive care experts who bring extensive clinical care

Travis honors Master Sgt. John Chapman with ruck march on Medal of Honor Day Nicholas Pilch 60TH AIR MOBILITY WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Team Travis airmen gathered for a ceremony and ruck march on National Medal of Honor Day, March 25, 2022, here. The ruck march is to honor U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. John A. Chapman, 20 years after his death. Chapman, a combat controller, is a Medal of Honor recipient for actions during Operation Anaconda in March 2002. Airman 1st Class Kristopher Burke, 60th Security Forces Squadron installation access controller, was inspired by Chapman’s story, so much that it influenced his decision to join the Air Force. Burke was the key planner for the ruck march. “I joined the Air Force later in life,” Burke said, he joined after turning 30. “From my experience before joining, I’ve always looked up to heroes like Master Sgt. Chapman and have always wanted to make a difference.” The ruck march was 5k in length. It started at the 60th Security Forces Squadron parking lot, and most participants carried a 40-pound ruck. Some walked, some ran, but all completed the ruck to honor Chapman. “At basic training, I thought it was serendipitous that our main classroom was named after Master Sgt. Chapman.” Burke said. “When I arrived at Travis, it was important

Dietitians available to assist with diets for those with prediabetes, diabetes Bob Goldberg WALTER REED NATIONAL MILITARY MEDICAL CENTER

Prediabetes and diabetes are diagnoses used to describe when an individual has high blood sugar. Common symptoms can include increased thirst and urination, increased appetite, fatigue, blurred vision, numbness or tingling in feet or hands, sores that don’t heal and unexplained weight loss. Individuals diagnosed with diabetes are at greater risk for heart disease, stroke, neuropathy, kidney disease, eye disease, foot problems, gum and dental problems and sexual and

bladder issues. There are three laboratory tests used to determine if an individual has prediabetes and four tests used for diabetes: Hemoglobin A1C (percent); Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG); Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT); and Random Plasma Glucose Test. Hemoglobin A1C is a test that determines an individual’s weighted three month blood sugar average (does not need to be a fasting test). The Fasting Plasma Glucose (FPG) should be done after fasting for nine to 12 hours. For the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT), patients are

asked to drink a sugary beverage and blood sugar is then checked after two hours. The Random/Casual Plasma Glucose Test is a blood test administered at any time of day. The readings to determine if a person blood sugar level is normal, has prediabetes or is diabetic are: Normal: Hemoglobin A1C – 5.7; FPG – 99 or below; and OGTT – 130 or below. Prediabetes: Hemoglobin A1C – 5.7 to 6.4; FPG – 100 to 125 and OGTT -- 140 to 199 Diabetes: Hemoglobin A1C – 6.5 or above; FPG – 126 or above;

Commissary benefit a valuable resource to help improve finances Kathy Milley DECA PUBLIC AFFAIRS SPECIALIST

FORT LEE, Va. — The idea of saving money sounds appealing but the road to get there can be overwhelming. April’s Military Saves Month campaign walks you through setting a goal and making a savings plan to improve your financial life and build wealth. Commissaries worldwide join the effort by spreading the Military Saves Month message and providing a financial benefit to our military patrons. “Providing a significant savings benefit for our patrons, the commissary can help you make the most of every dollar of your planned food budget,” said Marine Sgt. Maj. Michael R. Saucedo. “Not only that, we can help you afford healthier eating,

because fresh and nutritious alternatives are both plentiful and economical making the commissary your partner both financially and nutritionally.” Military Saves, a participant in the Department of Defense’s Financial Readiness Network, seeks to motivate, support and encourage the military community to save money, reduce debt, and build wealth. Start on your journey to financial improvement by taking the pledge on MilitarySave. org and choosing your savings goal to help formulate your simple savings plan. Then Military Saves will help keep you on track by sending short reminders, resources and tips on saving and living well while spending less. Small changes can go a long way to set you up for financial success.

Not surprisingly, much of the monthly budget is spent on groceries. Your commissary benefit can help you stick to your food budget and keep more money in your pocket, while also delivering healthy and fresh food in the process. On DeCA’s “We’re Stronger Together” webpage, you’ll see the following ways to maximize the use of your commissary benefit, in store and online: n Your Everyday Savings! (YES!): Your commissary reduces prices daily on hundreds of the most frequently purchased popular brands. Look for the orange YES! shelf labels in your commissary aisles. n Commissary Rewards Card: Download digital coupons right to your card and save at the register. If you don’t have a card, ask a cashier for one, then

visit the DeCA website to register your card. n Print Coupons: Before your commissary trip, visit the Savings Center on DeCA’s website to find resources with lots of printable coupons. If you’re at the store, check out the wide variety of coupons displayed throughout the commissary. n Commissaries.com sales flyer: Before visiting the store, view the sales flyer on the website while making your shopping list to ensure maximum savings. You can also sign up to have the flyer sent to your email. n Commissary Store Brands: Your commissary offers highquality, low-cost private label choices on food and non-food items, healthy, organic products, and baby and child care solutions to provide even greater savings. Look for DeCA’s Freedom’s

Choice food or Home Base nonfood products along with other private label items such as TopCare health and beauty, Full Circle Market natural and organic food, Crav’n dairy and frozen snack food options, Wide Awake ready-to-drink coffee products, Tippy Toes baby items, Pure Harmony pet food and Flock’s Finest wild bird food. n Meal planning: Not only will meal planning help you save money on take out, it will help you use all the food you purchase at the commissary, reducing waste and impulse purchases. To take the work out of meal planning, DeCA has created two dietitian-approved dinner menu plans including weekly shopping lists, each for an entire month of family meals. These monthly menu plans

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.
