349th FSS receives Wartime Readiness Legacy Award 349th Public Affairs Staff TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — The 349th Force Support Squadron is the recipient of the inaugural Force Support Wartime Readiness Legacy Award for leadership, performance and innovation in wartime readiness preparation. The award recognizes and celebrates Air Force Reserve Command’s best Force Support Squadron performance. Leading readiness training, participating in activities and utilizing innovative tactics and techniques advancing the organization’s readiness strategy, the squadron far exceeded minimum requirements. “To be successful in readiness, you have to first define readiness,” said Maj. Robert Bruce, 349th Force Support Squadron commander. “Our FSS defined it as, ‘If you get tapped on the shoulder, are you ready to go?’ ” The 349th Force Support Squadron is comprised of sustainment, operations and individual personnel readiness focused on strategic alignment. Bruce explained that the team’s initial goal was to develop the squadron’s mission statement. They decided upon, “Provide combat-ready airmen through human capital support, sustainment and cyber defense.” “Those three categories touch everybody in the FSS,” Bruce said. Once the mission statement

was solid, the next step was to identify supporting goals, put pen to paper and produce the strategic plan. Objectives soon became clear. Bruce said the team then focused on accelerating readiness. “We wanted to be ready in case the nation called, so we could deploy our airmen at a moment’s notice,” Bruce said. “Also, we knew a deployment was coming up, and we needed to be ready for it.” Bruce said the importance of initiating the plan, working it through from start to finish, and tracking results to meet goals helped them identify how they could avoid obstacles. “One action we took was to bring our airmen here on their annual tour to do home-based training prior to deployment,” said Senior Master Sgt. Shakela Matthews, 349th Force Support Squadron sustainment superintendent. “Because of the Covid-19 situation we were in at the time, we knew to bring them out sooner to contain and protect them from another variant that may come around.” Two days before the reservists were to deploy, two of them tested positive. The delay was one week, but they had prepared for that possibility. “When we had to swap out members, it wasn’t a big deal,” Matthews said. “We had other airmen ready to go.” Another challenge for the airmen was the limited availability of a firing range. Siera Watkins, 349th FSS noncommissioned officer in charge of readiness, left, and Senior Master remained closed due to Covid-19 restrictions, so the airmen traveled to neighboring Beale Air Force Base and a local firing range to stay on target with training. Backup plans were in place to keep everyone ready and not scrambling at the last minute. “Even though the coronavirus and the closed firing range was thrown at us, among other things, we remained in an active readiness posture over the last two years, and we had a lot of our folks ready to go out the door,”

Sgt. Shakela Matthews, 349th FSS sustainment superintendent, are a few of the key team members who improved the squadron’s readiness process.

Bruce said. Zoom interactivity was also used to remotely complete training requirements for some members, due to travel restrictions and social distancing measures. The team geared up to advance and optimize unit readiness utilizing the collaboration tool. In the past, missed sign-up dates for deliberate crisis action planning extraction systems, range training and medical appointments were a normal occurrence. However, once the team grounded themselves and

focused on a proactive posture, and not reactive, readiness improved. “It was everyone who was a part of this team that saw the plan through to fruition, and I think the end result was the readiness award,” Bruce said. Col. Jacquelyn Marty retires after 32 years 349th Air Mobility Wing staff TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — Col. Jacquelyn Marty, 349th Air Mobility Wing vice commander, retired June 4 after three decades of service. Marty’s Air Force career ended at the very place it began. Her first assignment was at Travis Air Force Base in 1994, when she assisted with the stand-up of the 9th Air Refueling Squadron. Marty credits phenomenal leaders and tireless airmen who supported her throughout her career as the constant thrust that propelled her toward success. She thanked her family and friends at the ceremony for their unwavering faith and support. “It’s really hard to capture the totality of her career against the events of history and in the Air Force itself,” said presiding officer Brig. Gen. Michele Kilgore, military deputy director of concepts and strategy, Air Force Futures, Headquarters United States Air Force, Washington, D.C. The general noted how much the Air Force had changed over the course of Marty’s service. “In the 1980s, women only made up about 10% of the force,” Kilgore said. “Today, we are proud to represent female officers who now make up 23% of today’s Air Force.” “Women serve in every job from fighter pilot, to combatant commander, to four-star general,” she said.

Marty reflected on her career prior to the ceremony. “It has been an amazing journey over these past 32 years,” she said. “I have far exceeded my goals as an O-6. This has been the highlight of my career, and I am excited to leave on a high note.” Marty said that as a senior leader, it was important for her to encourage and inspire others moving up through the ranks as reserve citizen airmen. “I have a passion for mentoring others, and I think because of my experiences, I became a compassionate commander,” she said. “Sometimes we may not trust our instincts or we may need someone to draw that information out of us and ultimately narrow it down to get to the choice that is going to work for you.” Marty during her career experienced her share of highs and lows. One life event that challenged her resiliency occurred in the fall of 1996 as she was driving to a military function with her 5-year-old son. The last thing she remembers is turning a corner and seeing a large truck in her rear view mirror. It was estimated that the truck slammed into her car at 75 mph. The truck’s driver had been texting while driving. Her son was uninjured in the collision and was able to unlock her phone, find her husband’s name and make contact. Marty said after the accident she could not remember much over the next six to eight months. “Here I was, a highly overachieving

Yet, I could barely get out of bed in the morning and brush my teeth; and doing just that was a big win for me,” she said. One year after the accident, she was removed from flying status by the Air Force and advised to separate, except she wasn’t ready for her Air Force Reserve journey to end. “I fought hard. I opted in for experimental hyperbaric oxygen therapy for traumatic brain injuries. It was tremendous and everything was back to normal,” she said. “I proved I was fit to serve.” Marty later accepted a command

position with the 713th Combat Operations Squadron at Beale Air Force Base and held that position for two years prior to accepting the position as vice commander of the 349th Air Mobility Wing. Col. Lee Merkle, 349th Air Mobility Wing commander, presented Marty with a shadow box from the wing during the retirement ceremony. “The Air Force, Travis Air Force Base, the airmen of the 349th are much better off today because of your contributions and service,” Merkle said. Marty in her closing remarks offered words of encouragement for the airmen who will follow her example. “I feel if we mentor our airmen along the way, and train our replacements along the way, as well, it makes for a smooth transition and it gives our airmen the confidence to step up when we ask them to” she said. “Keep your eye out for other leaders and encourage them along.” Marty during her career earned the rating of command pilot, logging more than 4,500 flight hours with 575 combat hours. She volunteered and flew 18 deployments and piloted nine different Air Force aircraft, including the KC-135A, B52H and KC-10A. Col. Terence A. McGee is the incoming 349th Air Mobility Wing vice commander. He is currently the commander of the 954th Reserve Support Squadron, Air Force Element Joint Transportation Reserve Unit, U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

KC-46A Pegasus gains approval to refuel 97% of joint force receivers Air Mobility Command Public Affairs SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. — Gen. Mike Minihan, commander of Air Mobility Command, approved a seventh Interim Capability Release mission set for the KC-46A Pegasus on May 31, increasing the aircraft’s operational capability to support 97% of the daily joint force air refueling demands. Less than one year after the KC-46A was approved for its first ICR, Minihan approved daily task-able operational use of the KC-46A to refuel the B-1B Lancer, C-135 variants, E-8 Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System, EC-130H Compass Call, F-35B/C Lightning II, KC-10 Extender and P-8 Poseidon aircraft during U.S. Transportation Command-tasked missions. “Credible and reliable KC46A tanker capability is now available to our joint and international partners. Let’s go,” Minihan said. “In May 2021, the KC-46A was not cleared to operationally support any (U.S. Transportation Command) missions. With a team of incredible professionals across the enterprise analyzing the data and making risk-informed decisions,

we’ve deliberately and aggressively accelerated the Pegasus’ operational use.”

ICR: A year in review The first ICR approving the Centerline Drogue System mission set was released July 9. In the past 12 months, the KC-46A demonstrated growing operational capacity at a swift pace, despite restrictions and deficiencies. The second ICR milestone was approved Aug. 5, marking the first ICR decision for the air refueling boom mission set. This allowed U.S. Transportation Command to task the KC-46A to support the C-17 Globemaster III, B-52H Stratofortress and other KC-46A receivers. “In the initial ICR plan, the first boom mission set release was estimated for May 2022,” said Brig. Gen. Ryan Samuelson, KC-46A Cross-Functional Team lead. “Instead, data and dedicated operational squadrons focused on safely executing the mission drove the decision forward nine months, enabling the aircraft and crews to accept operational missions that would otherwise be filled by busy KC135s and KC-10s. Simply put, the wings said, ‘We have system

deficiencies, but we got this,’ and they delivered.” On Oct. 13, Minihan approved the third ICR. This decision allowed the KC-46A to refuel all variants of the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon during U.S. Transportation Commandtasked missions. At that time, the KC-46A could support 62% of all receiver aircraft that requested air refueling support from U.S. Transportation Command. Boosting that capability to almost 70%, the fourth ICR, signed Dec. 6, approved the KC-46A to refuel the AC-130J Ghostrider, HC-130J Combat King II, MC130J Commando II, C-5M Super Galaxy and E-3G Sentry, as tasked by U.S. Transportation Command. KC-46A From Page 4 F-22 Raptor. The decision also released the KC-46A to support a variety of alert missions. The sixth ICR allowed the aircraft to be utilized in both passenger movement and aeromedical evacuation missions.

Next steps in review process The next steps for the Pegasus platform included accelerated lessons from Employment Concept Exercises, certification of international receivers. In addition to ICR approvals, another major milestone for the KC-46A program occurred April 18 when a Pegasus refueled Spanish EF-18 Hornets, known in Spain as C-15s, during the Pegasus’ first Employment Concept Exercise, ECE 22-03, at Moron Air Base, Spain. “This mission marked the first operational refueling of an international receiver for the KC46A, paving the way for stronger interoperability with allies and partners,” said Lt. Col. Joshua

Renfro, KC-46A Cross-Functional Team deputy lead. “Following a decision to approve Canadian and Spanish F-18s in early 2022, this ICR adds five more nations to the list of approved international receivers, including Finland, Italy, Australia, Malaysia and Switzerland.” Employment Concept Exercises, a subset of the KC-46A ICR plan, allow Air Mobility Command to employ the KC46A in different scenarios. Some of those scenarios include Red Flag, Green Flag, overseas operations and combatant command exercises for further operational employment and evaluation and seasoning of the KC-46A enterprise. Notably, ECE 22-03 also demonstrated the reliability of the platform. In Europe, the aircraft operated at a 98% maintenance reliability rate for a month and a half. “The KC-46A, its aircrews, maintenance and support personnel performed magnificently over those seven weeks in Spain,” Minihan said. “They pushed hard to run the aircraft through its paces during the ECE, including supporting a bomber task force, refueling U.S.

Helping You... Help Yourself

fighters over Eastern Europe, and completing the first-ever operational refueling of an international aircraft. AMC continues to drive toward increased refueling capability while working to overcome programmatic challenges.” Along with ICR decisions to increase KC-46A operational capability, the wings continue to explore the KC-46A’s capability and operational capacity, as McConnell Air Force Base’s 22nd Air Refueling Wing demonstrated May 5-6 when they completed a 24.2-hour flight on the KC-46A, breaking the record for AMC’s longest duration flight in history.

TRAVIS TAILWIND 5 During its full day airborne, the McConnell KC-46A performed dry contacts with another McConnell KC-46A, refueled four Marine F-35Bs and was refueled by another McConnellbased KC-46A. The flight also collected data on the human, machine and mission capabilities of aerial refueling. The data will be used to determine the feasibility, limitations, potential risks and benefits the KC-46A brings to the table for long-duration flights. Travis prepares to receive Pegasus aircraft Crews are building a massive three-bay hangar at Travis Air Force Base to serve as the base

of operations for the new KC46A Pegasus. Travis is scheduled to receive this latest aircraft in August 2023. It’s the first new aircraft at the base since August 2006. The base’s full anticipated complement of KC-46s is expected by the first quarter of 2025. The high-capacity KC-46A will ultimately displace the KC-10 Extender and replace the KC-135 Stratotanker. Travis was selected as the West Coast home for the Pegasus in January 2017.

Nations undergo rigorous process to join NATO Terri Moon Cronk DOD NEWS

Finland and Sweden filed letters of application to officially join The North Atlantic Treaty Organization on May 18, but joining NATO is not an overnight process. Both countries meet the majority of requirements to enter NATO economically, governmentally and militarily, but new members must be invited by a consensus of existing NATO

members, State Department officials said. State Department officials said a key determining factor for any invitation to new members is whether their admission to NATO will strengthen the alliance and further the basic objective of NATO enlargement, which is to increase security and stability across Europe. “All allies agree on the importance of NATO enlargement,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg told representatives of Finland and Sweden. “We all agree that this is an historic moment, which we must seize.” After Russia invaded Ukraine in February, Swedish and Finnish officials said their countries

wanted to join NATO and benefit from the organization’s collective defense strategy. Collective defense, outlined in Article 5 of NATO’s treaty, says, “an attack on one member of the alliance is an attack on all.” When both nations filed applications, Stoltenberg welcomed

Medical Service launches ‘Nutrition Kitchen’ series Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AFNS) — The Air Force Medical Service is launching “Nutrition Kitchen,” a series of online nutritional cooking classes geared toward service members and their families. The Nutrition Kitchen’s goal is to inspire healthy meal choices by providing options for service members to make realistic changes to foods they are already eating, while also providing the opportunity to learn the science behind those choices and “level up” their nutrition knowledge. Each episode introduces different options to “level up” a classic meal, starting with simple ingredient substitutions and ending with a chef-curated recipe option taught by Tech. Sgt. Opal Poullard, chef and culinary instructor at the Joint Culinary Center of Excellence at Fort Lee. After each cooking episode, Sahra Pak, a registered dietician at Travis Air Force Base, shares the science behind the nutritional choices made. “Nutrition has a profound impact on the health, performance and readiness of our active-duty personnel,” said Maj. Gen. Sharon Bannister, Medical Operations director, Office of the Air Force Surgeon General. “Combatting unhealthy weight gain and obesity and the detriment of poor nutrition is obligatory to improving warfighter readiness.” Beyond maintaining a healthy weight, improvements to physical and mental performance and underlying chronic health conditions are among some of the benefits. Giving nutrition the spotlight it deserves is a key tenet of the rapidly growing lifestyle medicine field.

DoD pays tribute to LGBTQ+ service members David Vergun DOD NEWS

WASHINGTON — Pride Month is a time to come together to honor the contributions of LGBTQ+ service members, said Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen H. Hicks, who spoke at the 11th LBGTQ+ Pride Ceremony at the Pentagon June 7. As President Joe Biden recently stated, Pride Month is a time to remind the LGBTQ+ community that they are valued and deserve dignity, respect and support, she said. The Defense Department strives to lead on issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, including for LGBTQ+ people, she said. “The DoD is committed to ensuring and promoting an atmosphere of dignity and respect for all civilian and military personnel. We strive to make the Department of Defense a workplace of choice for all Americans willing and qualified to serve. In doing so, we

set a bedrock foundation where all personnel are valued and given an equal opportunity to succeed,” she said. Recruiting, developing and retaining a highly skilled military and civilian workforce of diverse talent is essential to U.S. warfighting success, she said. “The department should not and cannot be a place that discourages outstanding LGBTQ+ individuals from a career in DoD because of actual or perceived barriers to entry or hostile workplace conditions,” she said. In September 2011, the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy was repealed, allowing LGBTQ+ service members and civilians to acknowledge their sexual orientation and serve openly. In September, the DoD commemorated the 10-year anniversary of that repeal, she said. “We will continue to advance policies and programs to develop and nurture a leadership pipeline of diverse talent and create pathways for everyone at DoD to realize their

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

potential. We know that organizational climates affect our workforces’ experiences. More to the point, it affects our warrior readiness. Therefore, we are directing initiatives to improve leaders’ skill development and foster more effective, inclusive team environments,” Hicks said. The department is developing a diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility strategic plan to guide and direct activities to further those initiatives within the department, she said. That plan is in the final stages of approval and will identify DoD’s priorities and objectives for the coming year, Hicks said. Progress will not be driven by policies and programs alone; it will also result from the individual actions each person takes every day, she said.

Airmen assigned to the 52nd Fighter Wing participate in a Pride Month color run at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, June 30, 2021. “The diversity of the United States is unquestionably one of our greatest strengths. Many here today have fought hard battles to overcome bigotry and be treated with dignity and respect that is due to every human being,” Hicks said.

Pride Month is a time to celebrate progress, and it’s also a time for the department, the nation and the world to acknowledge the challenges that remain and to reaffirm our commitment to equality for LGBTQ+ people, she said.

Kitchen From Page 7 the members of all our military services to upgrade their nutrition by making choices to keep them ready for the mission and to improve their health.” The Nutrition Kitchen series aims to make the sometimes difficult process of both selecting and cooking nutritious meals more engaging, approachable and fun. The recipes for this series were developed to be tasty, easy to prepare, and low-cost, all while providing the fuel necessary to “level up” service members’ health. Service members can look forward to several delicious recipes heading their way over the next few weeks. The chef-curated dishes range from banana

pancakes with date syrup to a cauliflower black bean ranchero taco bowl, a favorite among recipe taste-testers. More conveniently, this series will be available at service members’ fingertips, where they can watch and cook completely on their own time. New episodes are set to release weekly and can be found on the Nutrition Kitchen page at https://www.airforcemedicine.af.mil/NutritionKitchen/ or on YouTube. Funded by Air Education and Training Command and a partnership with the Office of the Surgeon General, the Nutrition Kitchen Program was created by the Lifestyle and Performance Medicine Working Group and Health Promotions. The episodes were filmed and produced by 2nd Audiovisual Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, from August 2021 to February 2022.

according to the NATO website. Politically, NATO promotes democratic values and enables members to consult and cooperate to solve defense and security-related issues, build trust and prevent conflict, according to the organization’s website. Militarily, NATO is committed to the peaceful resolution of disputes. If diplomatic efforts fail, it has the military power to undertake crisis-management operations.

Military power is carried out under the collective defense clause of NATO’s founding treaty – Article 5 of the Washington Treaty – or under a United Nations mandate. This can be done alone or in cooperation with other countries and international organizations, according to NATO’s website.
