TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — The war in Ukraine is believed to have displaced more than 5.7 million refugees and asylum-seekers since the invasion began in late February, according to the United Nations Refugee Agency. After the opposition to Ukraine turned its focus to Kyiv, an airman from David Grant Medical Center sprang into action to ensure her mother, Luba, would be safe and as far away from the fight as possible.

“When the war broke out, I begged my mother for two weeks straight to move here,” said U.S. Air Force Capt. Zlatoslava Karga, 60th Operational Medical Readiness Squadron mental health psychiatrist. “I’ve been asking her to move here since I immigrated.”

Karga was raised in Kyiv and immigrated to the U.S. in 2001. She commissioned into the Air Force in 2019.

As the circumstances developed in Ukraine, Karga said she could no longer ask her mom as a want but now as a need for her to move to the U.S. Luba reluctantly agreed March 8 to move out of Ukraine. Karga’s husband, Rob, set up a GoFundMe to offset the funds for last-minute travel arrangements and the money was raised within two hours.

Karga pointed out some donations even came from Russian families wanting Luba to get to safety.

Karga coordinated the trip, which was not an easy task, according to her. She hired a driver to take Luba out of Kyiv to Ternopil – usually a six-hour drive, but because of the war-torn roads, the drive took 14 hours. From Ternopil, Luba took an overnight bus to Kraków, Poland. Rob arrived in Poland and brought Luba to America on March 13.

Luba said the cultural differences are going to take some time to get accustomed to here, but feels grateful so many people, in some cases strangers, were loving enough to help move her here.

“I was brought to tears on the plane when a flight attendant approached me because she heard I was from Ukraine,” Luba said.

“She came to me crying and hugged me and told me she was so happy I was safe.”

Luba, 67, is shy, and speaks a little English.

“I was walking through the airport, and one of my shoes untied,”

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. — To compete with a highly competitive civilian job market, Air Force Reserve Command is offering a $6,000 incentive bonus for prior-service enlisted members who sign on to serve for at least three years in the Reserve.

“Our reserve airmen ensure we are the most ready and capable Air Force on the planet,” said Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, Air Force Recruiting Service commander.

“Specifically, bringing in prior-service, fully trained airmen into the reserve is critical, and we’ve got to ensure we are taking the right steps to compete in today’s battle for talent.”

It’s all part of what he called the Air Force’s “Stay Blue” campaign to promote a steady flow of highly trained airmen into the reserve component who desire to continue serving and putting their skills, training and experience to use for the defense of the nation while staying part of the Air Force team.

The temporary bonus for fully qualified prior-service affiliation into reserve vacancies will be paid to enlisted service members leaving active duty or those who are currently serving in the Individual Ready Reserve and are fully qualified for their new job as a reservist.

Air Force unveils new air power ad in theaters Air Force Recruiting Service Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas — The U.S. Air Force plans to unveil the latest commercial titled “Own the Sky” in theaters during moviegoers’ long-awaited release of “Top Gun: Maverick.”

The heart-pounding, adrenaline inducing ad gives the audience a sense of what it might feel like to be on the receiving end of the Air Force’s might and accentuates the importance of air power in America’s security.

In the new ad, some of the Air Force’s 5th Generation Fighters and their Air Force pilots are seen pulling Gs and doing maneuvers civilians might only see at an air show. “Own the Sky” can also be viewed on www.airforce.com.

Air Force Recruiting Service and the Air Force’s advertising agency, GSD&M, filmed this commercial, among others, over several days at Edwards Air Force Base. Multiple Air Force demo teams came together and were filmed air-to-air by a Hollywood jet equipped with

cutting-edge cameras to make this footage possible.

“The intensity of this spot is stunning so hold on to your popcorn because we are bringing the Air Force to your seat,” said Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, Air Force Recruiting Service commander. “We want to get Americans excited about what it means to serve this great nation. There are more than 130 career options an airman can take on their full or part-time journey to defend our skies. The air superiority in this video just gives you a glimpse of a small percentage of what is possible when you join us.”

The release of “Top Gun” in 1986 generated excitement about careers in military aviation, something recruiters hope to see again with the release of the newest film that takes viewers into the “danger zone” and immerses them into the thrill of military flying.

Asked if he thought the Navycentric film would benefit the Air Force as well, the general said he expects “Top Gun: Maverick” will generate a buzz about military service in general.

Military families have a unique connection to war, regardless of when or where it occurs.

For military children – who know their parents regularly train, prepare and deploy for military missions as part of their job – current events can cause stress and anxiety. Streams of media images and reports about troubling news events can be outright scary.

Talking to children openly

and honestly about the events they see and hear about can help validate their feelings and make them feel reassured that they are safe and loved, said Air Force Col. (Dr.) Eric Flake, a developmental behavioral pediatrician at Madigan Army Medical Center on Joint Base Lewis-McChord, in Washington.

During these conversations, he recommends parents: n Keep it simple and honest. n Validate their children’s feelings. n Express feelings about how the family might be affected by

what’s going on. n Highlight the values and strengths people demonstrate during hard times.

Flake highlighted the importance of military parents explaining to their children the reason for their military service is to protect children and make them feel safe.

“Everyone, but especially children, like to feel safe and secure,” he said. “Reassurance is key.”

An important part of that is

reassuring children that feelings of anxiety are normal, the behavioral specialist said. Parents can help externalize or label feelings and remind children that adults get anxious, too. Children need to understand that it’s OK to feel scared or anxious.

“It’s a healthy response, and we all feel it,” said Flake. “Having an emotional response and being sensitive to the suffering of others is healthy and should be supported, not turned off.”

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFRL) — Many good leaders cite a strong work ethic and the ability to learn and adapt to challenges as paramount to their success.

But for Brig. Gen. Jeannine Ryder, leadership success is more than just the ability to work hard and go beyond. Compassion, empathy and the ability to advocate and support others is even more important to a leader’s success. These provide a foundation to guide and serve.

Ryder, who began her Air Force career as a nurse 30 years ago, is the commander of the 711th Human Performance Wing in the Air Force Research Laboratory, as well as the chief nurse of the Air Force. And the lessons she acquired as a nurse has affected her leadership philosophy and approach to guiding airmen today.

“In order to treat patients effectively, we have to listen to them, understand from their perspective, assess the symptoms and formulate a plan that works for the patient,” Ryder said. “As a nurse, it is important to understand there is a balance of medical data and the patient’s emotional, physical and mental feedback to help them live their best life.”

As 711 Human Performance Wing commander, Ryder oversees more than 2,000 personnel and an annual $400 million budget while leading operations at seven geographic locations across the globe, including both the Airman Systems Directorate and the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine – the wing’s two mission units. As Air Force chief nurse, she is responsible for the creation and evaluation of policies and programs for 19,000 active duty, National Guard and reserve nursing personnel.

Her journey began like many journeys of leaders begin – with a strong foundation, a glimmer of crisp inspiration, opportunity paired with a little curiosity, and a drive to better the lives of those around her, both personally and professionally.

Ryder credits her family for providing her foundation.

“My work ethic came from my parents. And it wasn’t just about academics. I was out there mowing our acre of grass, and contributing – doing my share,” she said. “Mom, who was a teacher and stayed home to raise me and my two sisters, she taught us that details are critical.

No matter what the task – do it to the best of your ability. She and my dad were great role models on important things – from interactions with people to the importance of family to work ethic.”

Once Ryder was in high school, she was able to see her father, the principal, as a leader in her school.

“Dad would normally go in early so he could see the facilities and talk to the teachers.

Then between class periods, he

was usually standing in the lobby at the center of Pittsfield High School so he could see and talk with all the students,” Ryder said. “He was that leader who led by walking around – long before it was cool.”

Another element of Ryder’s strong foundation was her grandmother.

“My grandma was a nurse.

We’d go to visit her in Boston, and I’d see her wear her crisp white uniform and proudly wear the white hat she earned at graduation. It was so clear that she was proud of her profession, and loved her patients and their families,” Ryder said. “So I thought, ‘What a great way to be able to take care of others in their time of need.’ Because of her, I grew up wanting to be a nurse.”

While at Boston College, she saw an Air Force poster, and paused to consider the opportunities.

Equipped with that strong foundation, an Air Force poster and a persistent recruiter, Ryder became an Air Force nurse.

Since 1991, she has held multiple jobs at 16 installations, and she

has led from many levels. She also met, fell in love and married her spouse, Terry, of 29 years, and raised three daughters.

“Terry and I are a united front. If I had to deploy, he became mother and father. He’s a surgical first assistant, so we both have careers where we take care of other people,” she said.

“We’ve just made it work along the way, and continue to. My proudest accomplishment is our marriage and our daughters.”

Ryder said that at work, she had similar support, largely from her enlisted teammates.

“There are some days where we aren’t going to have 100% to give, right? We’re human, but that’s why we have our team, our wingmen,” she said. “I think it’s important that we are all able to tell our team, ‘Hey – I have something going on and don’t have 100% today,” without being judged or looked down on. And then, you give that support right back when others need it, too.”

That kind of trust requires

empathy, and some soft skills that have to be practiced and developed.

“We have to want to take care of each other – all of us,” Ryder said. “Taking care of people is not a rank issue. It’s a people issue, a compassion issue, an allof-us issue.”

Ryder went on to explain that part of taking care of each other demands getting out, interacting with each other – something she no doubt learned from watching her father. She also said it requires listening to understand, not just to respond – a skill she said she tries to continually improve upon.

“I’m not as rigid as I used to be with my perspective on things,” she said. “When we get out and listen to others – really listen and try to understand – we begin to learn why others see things differently. Within health care as well as my leadership role here in AFRL, we must be open to individuals’

JOINT BASE MCGUIREDIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. — As the first waves of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV2, or Covid-19, circled the globe in early 2020, strategies to combat the unknown disease were put into place with the intention of slowing the spread and protecting the world’s population.

Schools were closed, masks were issued, social distancing, contact tracing and quarantine measures were implemented. The Covid-19 pandemic was an unpredictable challenge that led corporations, businesses and even military units to rethink the way they operated.

Telework plans were enacted to lessen the risk of exposure and to keep employees safe. But for some, the mission never stopped and telework wasn’t an option.

“We didn’t stop, even as the pandemic broke out,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Barry McKeown, 421st Combat Training Squadron commander. “The Department of Defense directive stated, the deployment of forces would continue.”

And so, the mission continued.

These training courses prepare airmen for a plethora of no-fail missions throughout the Department of Defense and federal agencies.

The Expeditionary Operations School offers 81 in-resident courses and graduates approximately 8,000 students per year from its main campus at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey and its operating locations at Hurlburt Field, Florida, and Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

The 421st Combat Training Squadron delivers predeployment training for approximately 65% of the Air Forces nonspecial operations forces, and functions as the formal training unit for contingency response forces, McKeown said.

“You can’t telework in the field or the firing range, so our training couldn’t slow down,”

McKeown said.

Balancing the precautions to properly mitigate the spread of Covid-19, the teams at the Expeditionary Operations School created a pandemic-resilient mission sustainment plan to continue to safely bring students in for training.

“Covid is risk, Covid is a threat, but we took this as an opportunity to become more antifragile,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Christopher MacDonald, 423rd Training Squadron commander.

MacDonald’s squadron is chock full of hand-selected trainers for intense Air Force Specialty Code-specific training that deepens the career field knowledge of the service’s airmen, but touts the sentiment that their team is “leaders first, instructors second.”

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — There will be something for everyone this weekend at the 2022 Wings Over Solano open house and air show.

From performers like the Patriots Jet Demo Team or a Parade of Heavies, and the F-16 Demonstration Team and the F-35 Demonstration Team, you will get to see it all. There’s also a global strike fly-by planned of B-1, B-2 and B-52 aircraft.

A local highlight will be the Team Travis Parade of Heavies featuring the C-17, C5 and KC-10.

Admission is free but if you’d like a reserved seat you

can purchase tickets for that at https://travisfss.com/travisairshow/. There will be a children’s zone, concession stands, beer garden and shuttles to the Aviation Museum.

The Hospital Gate will open at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday for public access. You will be guided to the parking area, then performances begin at 11 a.m.

Security will be tight for the open house. As a guide, base officials have provided generalized lists of what’s allowed and what’s not allowed at the venue. Acceptable items include: n Folding chairs. n Small bags, purses, backpacks or camera bags. n Small bags or coolers for

Implementing virtual reality technology additions and instituting virtual classified-level training developed by in-house intelligence experts deepened the tool bag of the Expeditionary Operations School, MacDonald said.

“The EOS as a schoolhouse didn’t have a choice but to make changes,”

said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jonathan Anderson, 435th Training Squadron commander. “We used Zoom and Microsoft Teams to bring in guest speakers to help us bridge the gap between Scott and Hurlburt.”

Beyond innovations in training, the commanders and their squadrons are also responsible for the “care and feeding” of their in-residence students. A Covid Policy Action Team was established to monitor changes in guidance and to stay abreast of the newly developing rules on quarantine, and eventually testing and vaccination requirements.

for proper social distancing in both the classroom and dormitories, which meant increasing the number of classes offered to get the same number of students through,” Anderson said.

As mask mandates and travel restrictions are lifted, operations continue to buzz along.

“Overall, our operations look normal. We are increasing our class sizes, and returning to how things were,” Anderson said. “Our four mobile training teams are traveling more to provide training and get feedback from around the world, and that feedback from the field will help us improve our training.”

“When I listened to Gen. Van Ovost talking about how for our young airmen – that ‘it’s hard to be what you can’t see’ and that’s why we need to recognize all our ‘firsts and onlys.’ That changed my perspective a bit.”

Ryder has been a “first and only” herself several times throughout her career. She was the first female commander at Keesler Medical Center.

At her current assignment, she is the first female commander of the 711th Human Performance Wing in Air Force Research Laboratory. Her next assignment, recently announced, will be yet another first. Ryder will become the first female commander of the 59th Medical Wing in San Antonio, Texas.

“The ‘firsts and onlys’ show all of our airmen and guardians that they can obtain any leadership role, and go after any opportunity,” Ryder said.

Needless-to-say, Ryder, Van Ovost and others like them are paving the runway and clearing off the foreign object debris, or FOD, for others behind them.

“The civilian job market is red hot right now,” said Lt. Col. Tim Martin, chief of the Operations Division for the 367th Recruiting Group, with headquarters at Robins Air Force Base.

The 367th Recruiting Group is the reserve component of the Air Force’s total force recruiting enterprise.

“Companies are offering huge bonuses and incentives, and that’s making it harder for us to recruit people coming off of active duty,” Martin said. “We’re hoping this $6,000 bonus will encourage more people who are leaving active duty or those who have left in the past few years and are currently in the IRR to make the decision to continue their service as reserve citizen airmen.”

In October 2021, the 367th Recruiting Group was given a recruiting goal of signing up 8,200 new reserve citizen airmen

for fiscal year 2022 to achieve the reserve’s congressional-mandated end strength of 70,300. As of April 27, the recruiting group was 885 accessions behind its target and is at risk of missing its recruiting goal.

Historically, the reserve has strived for a 70% prior service and 30% non-prior service mix for its new recruits.

“Recruiting in the Covid era is proving to be extremely challenging,” said Col. E. Benjamin Smith III, 367th Recruiting Group commander and director of Air Force Reserve Command recruiting. “We need programs like this bonus to give us a fighting chance to meet our endstrength goal for FY22. I strongly encourage service members who are leaving active duty to talk to a recruiter about continuing their service in the Air Force reserve.

Nearly every enlisted member who makes the transition from active duty to the reserve will qualify for some kind of bonus, whether it’s this incentive bonus or a critical skills bonus.”

Luba recalled. “This woman, who worked for the airline, walked up to me, knelt and tied my shoe for me.

It was an incredible act of kindness to top off all of the kindness people did for me to move me here.”

This mother-daughter duo hasn’t seen each other since 2015, so some adjustments for their new life together are being made, but Karga is happy her mother is here for good.

Luba said the biggest difference since moving here is how peaceful it is. In the war-torn Ukraine, she could hear bombs going off a couple blocks from her apartment. Here, she enjoys the peace of the Northern California countryside – the sounds of horses, roosters

Karga and Luba said the kindness they received can only be reciprocated by showing love and compassion for everyone around them.

“It’s important for us to

share our love and compassion for everyone,” Karga said.

Mother’s Day for this family is a little more special, and Rob, who also works at David Grant Medical Center, had something planned for them.

(Zlatoslava) “Zlata doesn’t celebrate Mother’s Day like most people do,” he said prior to Mother’s Day. “She celebrates her mother every chance she gets, and I plan on honoring both of them on Mother’s Day with something special.”

Luba evacuated from Ukraine – a 6,000-mile trip. She prays for peace in Ukraine and hopes the kindness given to her, for her daughter, is passed on.

The U.S. continues to expedite the authorization and facilitation of additional assistance to Ukraine from U.S. allies.
