Air advisers engage Peruvian Air Pain at the Pump? Military Star Card offers Travis Force, rekindle training mission community relief with everyday savings 571ST MOBILITY SUPPORT ADVISORY SQUADRON
Army & Air Force Exchange Service Public Affairs
JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIXLAKEHURST, N.J. — Air advisers with the 571st Mobility Support Advisory Squadron engaged with Peruvian Air Force members to train their fixed-wing unit called Air Group Eight, or Grupo 8, in tactical air mobility operations Feb. 22 through March 10, at Callao Air Base, Lima, Peru. The mission, the first with Peruvian Air Force since the pandemic, demonstrates PERAF’s interoperability with the United States Air Force in future exercises and realworld operations. Although it was the first mission in over two years with Peru, the partnerships and friendships established in previous years enabled a quick re-integration between international airmen. “Returning to Peru after the pandemic has been a great experience,” said Tech. Sgt. Bruno Carreiro, 571st Mobility Support Advisory Squadron air adviser. “For several years, we have been training Grupo 8 on improving aerial port efficiency, the handling and inspection of hazardous cargo, and on developing better techniques to calculate a vehicle’s

Cardholder savings add up when refueling at Travis Express locations, as drivers save 5 cents per gallon and earn 2% in rewards points on purchases. Air Force clarifies policies for pregnant aircrew Staff Sgt. Nick Z. Erwin SECRETARY OF THE AIR FORCE PUBLIC AFFAIRS
ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — The U.S. Air Force recently clarified its polices that lifted some pregnancy restrictions for aircrew members. Air Force officials underscored that aircrew members may voluntarily request to fly during pregnancy and no waiver is required to fly in the second trimester with an uncomplicated pregnancy in a non-ejection seat aircraft if all flight safety criteria are met. All pregnant aircrew are authorized to apply for a waiver regardless of trimester, aircraft or flight profile. These changes, implemented in 2019, represent data-driven policy adjustments, to include pushing some authorities down to the lowest level possible. To avoid any further confusion about the current policy, the Air Force Personnel Center emailed the policy clarifications to the entire force March 31. “These changes are a significant step in the right direction to empowering every member of our team to serve to their full potential,” said Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall. “The Department of the Air Force’s most important asset is our people. We are focused on eliminating barriers that hamper the ability to attract and retain the most talented individuals who want to serve.” Pregnant aircrew members
who wish to fly must be appropriately informed of risk to self, fetus, safety of flight and mission, consistent with all medical conditions. Approval is granted through joint consent of the aviator, obstetrics provider, flight surgeon and commander. Waiver requests will be considered for those outside of 12–28 weeks of pregnancy, and for all airframes including single seat, ejection seat, and high-G capable airframes. The owning major command surgeon general is the waiver approval authority. Local medical personnel are not authorized to refuse consideration of a waiver request. DAF senior leaders will monitor the implementation of the policy through a monthly review of the number of waivers submitted, the number approved and denied, and the reason for those decisions. “It’s unfortunate that there was needless confusion around this policy for so long, which is why we’ll be actively monitoring its implementation moving forward. As leaders we know transparency allows for accountability, and accountability helps to build trust,” said Under Secretary of the Air Force Gina Ortiz Jones. “The pacing challenge demands that we’re not needlessly grounding our aircrew.” Waiver acceptability is determined using individualized flight safety risk assessment and requires input from the obstetrics provider, flight surgeon and

operational profile. Initial waiver authority decision can be appealed with a written request by the aviator. “As leaders, we trust our aviators to perform operational risk assessments and safely execute the mission every day,” said Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown Jr. “Clarifying this policy
is about enabling airmen to make an informed, personal decision, and providing support to both the member and the waiver authority.” The Women’s Initiatives Team, one of the seven teams that comprise the Department of the Air Force Barrier Analysis Working Group, contributed
vital input from women across the enterprise as the service evaluated the policy. “Empowering women to make decisions for their own bodies and trusting them to appropriately manage risk, just as they do each time they step to the aircraft, will ensure all

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Defense Intelligence Agency report details space-based threats C. Todd Lopez DOD NEWS
The Defense Intelligence Agency Tuesday released the new unclassified report, “Challenges to Security in Space 2022,” which is a follow-up to its similarly titled report in 2019. The new report examines the space and counterspace programs which could pose significant challenges to U.S. or partner interests by China, Russia, North Korea and Iran, said John F. Huth, the DIA defense intelligence officer for space and counterspace, during a briefing Tuesday at the Pentagon. “This new edition of ‘Challenges to Security in Space’ provides an updated, unclassified overview of current threats to U.S. space-based capabilities, particularly from China and Russia, but also to a lesser extent, those emerging from North Korea and Iran,” he said. “This edition examines the expansion of space operations and details
Earth-focused space services, as well as growing efforts to explore the moon and beyond.” New this year in the report is an expanded assessment of the impacts of space debris. The report indicates that the probability of collisions of massive derelict objects in low Earth orbit is growing and will likely continue to grow due to the rising numbers of space launches, the continuing fragmentation from collisions, battery explosions, and further anti-satellite testing events. As strategic competitors, Huth said both Russia and China are taking steps now to undercut the United States and allies in the space domain. “Both nations view space as a requirement for winning modern wars, especially against Western nations, and look to prove themselves as world leaders,” he said. “Since early 2019, competitor space operations have increased in pace and scope across nearly

AFPC accepting applications for officer instructor, recruiting duty Toni Whaley AIR FORCE’S PERSONNEL CENTER PUBLIC AFFAIRS
JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO, Texas (AFNS) — The Air Force’s Personnel Center will accept applications from active-duty Line of the Air Force officers for the calendar year 2023 Officer Instructor and Recruiting Special Duty Nomination Board April 11 to May 14. The board selects officers in the ranks of first lieutenant to lieutenant colonel to serve in formal training instructor, Air Force Recruiting Service and Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps detachment commander positions. Selectees will receive assignments with reporting dates from June 2023 through May 2024. Guardians interested in serving in these positions will compete in a separate U.S. Space Force process. To be eligible, applicants must have a minimum of 24 months’ time on station by the initial reporting period if serving stateside, or a DEROS within the reporting period. Officers cannot have any derogatory data (Unfavorable Information File, Referral Officer Performance Report) within the last five years prior to the board. AFPC assignment functional release is not required to apply. Officers on the winter Vulnerable to Move List or with a projected assignment, an approved retirement or separation date, or an Assignment Availability Code expiration date beyond the reporting period are not eligible to compete; however, officers projected to a short tour assignment or currently assigned to joint duty positions will be considered. “Instructor and recruiting special duty nomination does not prevent an officer from also being nominated for command,
developmental education, or other competitive processes,” said Sophia Barnard, OI&RSD and U.S. Air Force Academy assignments. “AFPC will work with commanders to deconflict these selections on a case-by-case basis, so we strongly encourage officers to apply if they are interested.” Officers who meet the minimum eligibility criteria will receive a myPers link to apply or decline consideration for the program using MyVector. “There is no penalty for declining consideration and officers are not automatically opted-in,” Barnard said. “This is a nominative process and requires senior rater endorsement to ensure we have the right talent to find and develop future airmen and guardians.” Board-selected candidates will volunteer for OI&RSD positions in Talent Marketplace prior to the normal summer 2023 assignment window. Officers matched via TM will be placed on assignment with report dates during either the summer or winter assignment cycles. AFROTC Det/CC assignment matches occur outside of TM. AFROTC (Det/CC and instructor) and Recruiting Service positions are located nationwide. Other instructor positions are located at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.; U.S. Air Force Academy, Colo.; and Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas. For Capt. Joseph Smiley, Strategic Outreach and Program Integration chief at the Squadron Officer School, SOS was his number one instructor position on his OI&RSD preference list. “When I came through SOS as a student, I saw how close-knit and almost family-like the faculty members were with each other,” Smiley said. “I was interested in being a part of SOS and asked my instructor at my
final feedback what I had to do to come back. The schoolhouse is a great place to be assigned and if you want to have a positive, lasting impact on the Air and Space Forces I highly encourage every individual to apply for SOS instructor duty.” Upon her arrival to Officer Training School as an instructor, 1st Lt. Katie Littlefield also noted the family atmosphere and camaraderie within the 24th Training Squadron. “The work environment almost has a feeling of being deployed in the sense that its mission is one that drives a team together to achieve a common goal and objective,” Littlefield

But the energy and investment poured into the men and women who will be our nation’s sword and shield pays dividends when seeing the students reach and realize their full potential first-hand.”
Due to their vital role training and developing the Department of the Air Force’s future officer corps, these positions are exempt from deployment and can positively impact an officer’s career path. The special duty is highlighted in the member’s Officer Selection Brief and emphasized in the Secretary of the Air Force Memorandum of Instruction to the promotion board members, Barnard said. “There are also many benefits and incentives that come
along with being selected for this program to include a closeknit work family environment, faculty opportunities to grow personally and professionally, predictable daily schedules, family time, and the opportunity to meet and interact with a wide range of people and AFSCs,” Smiley added. Capt. Trenidy Thomas, 24 TRS flight commander and former OTS instructor, said anyone who wants to be a better leader and follower should apply.

Space From Page 8 all major categories: communications, remote sensing, aviation and science and technology demonstration.” Kevin Ryder, a DIA senior defense intelligence analyst for space and counterspace, explained just how much China and Russia have grown their space capabilities. “Evidence of both nations’ intent to undercut the United States and allied leadership in the space domain can be seen in
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE/CLASSIFIEDS the growth of combined in-orbit assets of China and Russia, which grew approximately 70% in just two years,” Ryder said. “This recent and continuing expansion follows a more than 200% increase between 2015 and 2018.” Ryder said that China has launched a robotic lander and rover to the far side of the moon as well as an orbiter lander and rover on a mission to Mars. China has also launched multiple missiles which are capable of both destroying satellites and deploying jammers to deny satellite communications and GPS. The Russians, Ryder said,
have developed mobile missile technology that is able to destroy satellites and crewed space vehicles. They’ve also developed counterspace weapons capabilities, including those capable of conducting electronic warfare operations, to affect communications and deny others the use of space-based imagery. Ryder also discussed the goals of China and Russia when it comes to the moon and Mars. “Both nations seek to broaden their space exploration initiatives, together and individually, with plans to explore the moon and Mars during the next 30 years,” he said. “If successful,
these efforts will likely lead to attempts by Beijing and Moscow to exploit the moon’s natural resources.” While the number of spacefaring nations grows, Ryder said the U.S. space posture will continue to be challenged and U.S. space assets will face new risks. “A secure, stable and assessable space domain is crucial as challenges to the United States’ and our allies’ space capabilities continue to increase,” Ryder said. The new report, “Challenges to Security in Space 2022,” he said, offers insights from space intelligence experts on those

Facing recruiting headwinds, Air Force offers enlistment incentives New skills added to the Initial Enlistment Bonus program Air Force Recruiting Service Public Affairs JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) — The Air Force added more opportunities for future airmen to receive bonuses upon entering active duty in fiscal year 2022. Six skills were added to the FY22 Initial Enlistment Bonus program on April 11 for four or six-year contracts in hardto-fill job specialties and an additional incentive called “Quick Ship” will be

offered from April 11 to Sept. 30, 2022. “As we roll up our sleeves in the battle for talent, we’ve got to remain competitive as we go after our next generation of airmen,” said Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, Air Force Recruiting Service commander. “While we’ve got an unmatched value proposition, we also have a record-high level of competition for America’s best and brightest.” Any member who enters active duty with any career field in a Quick-Ship status may be eligible to receive an $8,000 bonus. Quick Ship is when an already fully qualified applicant fills a
short-notice basic military training vacancy, shipping out within five days or less. In addition, some cyber career fields have bonus pay amounts that are based on the member’s highest level of certification, giving the applicant an opportunity to receive up to $20,000. Special warfare recruits are already eligible for up to $50,000 upon entering active duty. Recruiting incentives give recruiters additional support and tools to use as they press through all the challenges associated with reaching the Air Force’s
FY22 Total Force accessions goals. Those challenges include a low youth propensity to join, a national labor shortage and aggregate effects of operating primarily virtual since the March 2020 outbreak of Covid-19. “These potential recruits are the lifeblood of combat readiness and national security,” Thomas said. “So, we must do everything we can to inspire, engage and recruit the airmen.” AFRS is also expecting to see recruiting incentives from Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard that support their Total Force recruiting mission.

discovered that women aviators generally did not know that they could seek a waiver to continue to fly during certain stages of pregnancy, depending on the aircraft. We appreciate recent efforts to clarify that policy and we are actively engaged to lower the level of waiver authority for uncomplicated pregnancies in all trimesters.”
