VFW Post 2333 plans job fair for April in Suisun City SUISUN CITY — The CHP, Fairfield police and the Solano County Sheriff’s Office will be among the agencies that will be at a VFW Post 2333 job fair April 13.

Private sector companies also will be on hand.

The job fair is focusing on veterans who are transitioning out of active duty, those active duty members who are thinking about leaving the armed services and veterans in general.

Organizers ask that those who attend bring resumes or contact information.

The fair will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 427 Main St.

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — I laid face down in the tall grass and braced for the inevitable bite that would crush my skull. I was pinned to the ground by a fully grown Kodiak Grizzly bear which had its massive paw planted squarely between my shoulder blades.

There was nowhere to run, no way to fight, my mind raced for a way out but found none.

Kodiak Island is situated in the Gulf of Alaska where rugged wilderness and military service have coexisted for decades. The island is home to one of the largest U.S. Coast Guard bases as well as a small U.S. Navy installation where Sea, Air and Land Teams conduct their cold weather training. During World War II, the island served as a crucial outpost for military defenses against an anticipated invasion.

The Kodiak Archipelago is also home to some of the best hunting and fishing in North America. The island boasts incredible salmon runs, massive Roosevelt elk, and atop the food chain the Kodiak bear, the largest bear in the world.

Last spring, I got an unexpected call from my dad; he had won a hunting lottery for Alaska residents that distributes permits to hunt one of the island’s famous elk. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I agreed to join him on the weeklong expedition.

A few months later I was standing on a blustery dock in Kodiak, peering through the morning fog at a single engine float plane which would take us to the

hunting ground. I had spent the weeks and months prior to this moment painstakingly preparing. We had tested and retested our equipment, discussed every contingency, physically trained for the grueling hikes ahead, discussed contingencies with more experienced hunters, and gone to the range to improve aim.

Readiness, a skill and concept I had worked to hone in the military was essential to our success

and survival.

As I watched the plane approach through the choppy waves, my nerves intensified.

Afognak Island, where we would spend the next seven days, sits within the Kodiak archipelago and borders the Shelikof Strait, named for the Russian fur trader who founded the first Russian settlement in Alaska in 1784.

The strait is notorious for its ferocious weather; 90 mph winds regularly roll through the strait making emergency rescue from Afognak often impossible.

“Well, it’s only going to get more windy,” said dad through the crackling headset as we made an initial ascent in the de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver.

“I guess we’re going to find out how well our tent holds up in the wind.”

After a turbulent 45-minute flight and precarious landing on a small lake, we unloaded the plane. As we hauled items to the beach, we scanned the windswept hills surrounding us for a suitable campsite or a glimpse of elk.

“That hill right there is going to be your best bet,” barked the pilot. “I’ll see you in a week unless we hear from you sooner, I

can’t say I envy you out here in this weather.”

With that he turned, boarded his plane, and was gone. As the evening progressed the wind increased to an un-flyable gale.

Even if we called for a flight out now, we would have to wait for better conditions. This meant we were trapped on this island for the next couple of days. We would have to rely on only each other and our supplies.

The next morning, we were up before daylight drinking burnt coffee and rubbing sleep from our eyes in the freezing winds and light rain that continued through the night. We could hunker down and wait for the weather to subside or continue into the wilderness in search of elk.

“Well, we knew we’d have to fight the elements a bit,” I said as I pulled on a fourth layer. “I guess it would be better to be cold out there than cold right here.”

With that, we proceeded out into the dark and windy wilderness. The hike was slow going with alder trees and thorny raspberry bushes blocking our path.

Whiteman Air Force Base undergoes a large-force joint integration exercise 509th Bomb Wing Public Affairs WHITEMAN AIR FORCE BASE, Mo. — On April 4, the 509th Bomb Wing kicked off a four-day interoperability exercise involving active duty, guard and reserve fighter, bomber, refueling and support units from across the country.

Following months-long planning, Exercise Agile Tiger is designed to meet training objectives consisting of high-fidelity distributed mission planning, coordinated long-range standoff munitions integration, dynamic targeting and advanced survival, evasion, resistance and escape scenarios. This event also provides for the development of new and non-traditional communications tactics, techniques and procedures.

Six F-35A Lightning II aircraft from Hill Air Force Base, Utah, two T-38 Talon’s from Langley AFB, Va. and one KC-10 Extender from Travis

AFB, Calif., arrived at Whiteman AFB, where they will stage operations for the duration of the exercise. Whiteman B-2 Spirits and A-10 Warthog aircraft, along with their Army UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters will also participate. Other flying and support units will stage out of McConnell, Dyess, Ellsworth, and Barksdale AFB. “We rely on our airmen to adapt to increasingly constrained environments, collaborate with cross-functionally, and innovate in a highly dynamic combat environment,” said Colonel Daniel Diehl, 509th Bomb Wing Commander. “As America’s premier bomb wing, our airmen are trusted to execute nuclear and conventional airpower, and we are constantly looking for ways to improve processes and ensure we’re meeting the objectives of the National Defense Strategy. This exercise is designed to ensure we stay combat ready, every day.”

JOINT BASE MCGUIREDIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. — Airmen assigned to the 818th Mobility Support Advisory Squadron recently trained six medical members with the Ghanaian Armed Forces on aeromedical evacuation in preparation for a U.N. deployment.

Throughout the continent of Africa, the United Nations is engaged in multiple peacekeeping operations. Ghana, one of 32 African countries that are part of the African Union, pledged to assist the U.N. in the assistance of transporting the sick and wounded to higher levels of care.

The aeromedical evacuation patient movement training focused primarily on the physiology of inflight patient care while also training GAF medical personnel on patient movement processes from point of injury to higher echelon of care and pre-mission training in crisis response.

“This training has an enormous impact, not just to the GAF, but to the region as a whole as it will provide a sustainable AE capability that is able to provide continued support to U.N. PKOs, or peacekeeping operations, and domestic mass casualty events should the situation

The training equipped GAF to support current U.N. PKO, and transform their Airbus C-295 and Mil Mi-17s aircraft into air ambulances. This training event was a collaborative effort between the 818th MSAS and all branches of the Ghanaian Armed Forces.

“The largest impact this training may provide is that the 463L pallet system is universal with other partner nations like the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia and many others,” said U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Sandre Lillington, 818th MSAS air adviser. “Now with Ghana being able to utilize this

platform up to U.N. standards, it will give the opportunity to quickly cross load cargo from Ghanaian Airbus C-295s to any other partner nation’s aircraft.”

The previous method included loading and securing cargo manually inside of an aircraft. The second element to the cargo handling training was certifying six GAF members as instructors to ensure a self-sustainable training program which would lead to autonomous operations.

The new capability to load aircraft with 463L pallets and utilize forklifts expedited

cargo upload and download times, giving more flexibility to generate more sorties in a shorter period of time.

The added knowledge and credibility that comes with being able to support the U.N. with their cargo needs, the GAF can be seen as not only capable of rapid cargo delivery, but also to teach these new capabilities and techniques to other African nations.

“Through expedited cargo handling, it could assist patient movement through the use of rapid deployment and reconfiguration of the C-295 for medical evacuation

The 818th MSAS air advisers brought tactics and training that can assist the stability of the region, as well as strengthen bonds between nations, as they are now more capable to respond to any U.N. mission or humanitarian need.

RAAF BASE AMBERLEY, Queensland — Members of the 22nd Airlift Squadron, stationed at Travis Air Force Base, trained on the C-5M Super Galaxy and celebrated 80 years of heritage with Royal Australian Air Force allies at RAAF Base Amberley, Queensland, March 23-27, as part of the Major Command Service Tail Trainer program.

The MSTT program is managed by Air Mobility Command and allots monthly flight hours to the C-5M specifically for training.

“Opportunities like this allow all parties to learn and improve,” said Capt. Justin Wilson, 22AS pilot and aircraft commander. “Within the first hour or two of our arrival, we were already learning techniques from our RAAF partners that we hadn’t considered – that’s the purpose of training together.”

Wilson explained that through these broadening opportunities, the squadron and the aircrew are able to refine tactics, techniques and procedures for tomorrow’s fight.

“By working with our RAAF partners, their aerial port squadrons and their loadmasters, it enhances the proficiency and effectiveness in how we respond to humanitarian and wartime efforts,” said Wilson. “We are the only air force with the C-5M aircraft – through showing our RAAF counterparts how the C-5M works and maneuvers, it better prepares both forces for future bilateral and multilateral operations.”

This is the first time in history that a C-5M has landed in the country, presenting a unique

training environment for the members of the Australian Air Force assigned to RAAF Base Amberley.

“It makes sense for us to capitalize on our existing close relationship with the U.S. Air Force and take advantage of training opportunities on the C-5M,” said Air Commodore Sandra Turner, Director General of U.S. Force Posture Initiatives and Singapore Military Training

This was also a unique experience for the members of the 22nd AS because it was an opportunity to celebrate 80 years of heritage in the squadron’s birthplace.

“To come back to Australia, the place where it all started, is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and a first for many people in the squadron,” said Wilson.

“We worked together 80 years ago and are still working together today. . . that signifies that our bond has only gotten stronger.”

The squadron was established April 3, 1942, as the 22nd Transport Squadron at Essendon Airport in Melbourne, Australia, coinciding with the formation of several RAAF transport squadrons as well, during the Second World War.

Assigned to U.S. Army forces in Australia under U.S. Air Transport Command, the 22nd AS was created with the mission of providing combat airlift support to the Indo-Pacific region.

Earning two Distinguished Unit Citations for its actions over Papua and New Guinea, the squadron quickly became a major operating unit within the region, and was instrumental in lifting the Japanese threat against Australia.

To commemorate this milestone, members of the 22nd AS and 60th AMW attended a heritage ceremony alongside Australian distinguished visitors, lawmakers, and RAAF Base Amberley civic leaders and defense personnel.

Following the ceremony, guests in attendance toured the C-5M and received a demonstration of its cargo capabilities.

“The aircraft and the load training are great, the equipment that we have is great, but it’s really about getting to know and work alongside the people in the Australian Defense Force,” said Wilson. “We can have the airframe work and we can have the maintenance work, but it’s through strengthening our relationships with our allies that we enhance our interoperability.”

Later, another branch jabbed into my ear, a unique level of discomfort, even in a morning full of plentiful discomfort. It was clear that

any exposed body part would be struck, jabbed or whipped by the brush on this journey.

As we struggled to the saddle of the mountain ridge, we surveyed the terrain. We could make out signs of trampled grass and a barely distinguishable game trail in the valley below. We tried to maintain high ground, but the brush continued to degrade our view of the rest of the valley, each step into the

DoD building largest 3D-printed structures in Western Hemisphere David Vergun DOD NEWS

The Defense Department, in partnership with the private sector, is building three transient training barracks using advanced 3D printing technology. The project, which is being spearheaded by the Defense Innovation Unit, is expected to be completed within 10 months.

At more than 5,700 square feet each, these barracks will each be the largest 3D-printed structures in the Americas.

“Constructing facilities using this cuttingedge technology saves labor costs, reduces planning time, and increases the speed of

construction of future facilities,” said Army Lt. Gen. Doug Gabram, commander of U.S. Army Installation Management Command.

“We are looking at other ways to use this innovative technique for rapid construction of other types of facilities beyond barracks,” he added.

The barracks will be the first 3D-printed structures that comply with the DoD’s newly released Unified Facilities Criteria for additive concrete construction, which provides guidance for DoD construction.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE ICON, a construction technology company based in Austin, Texas, was selected to do the work. The company had previously done 3D construction work with DIU for the Marine Corps.

Also, in 2021, the Texas Military Department partnered with ICON to design and 3D print an innovative training barracks at the Camp Swift Training Center in Bastrop, Texas.

The material used in the barracks construction is ICON’s proprietary Lavacrete, which is a type of highstrength concrete with a compressive strength of 2,000 to 3,500 pounds per square inch, according to ICON. This material can withstand extreme weather and greatly reduce the impact of natural disasters, while providing

maximum efficiency. It can be printed at high speeds while retaining form, enabling structures to be built faster while keeping construction projects on schedule and on budget, according to ICON. Also, the building material will last longer than traditional construction materials and methods, according to ICON. “We are proud to collaborate with the U.S. Army and continue our partnership with DIU to see diverse use cases for ICON’s technology across the DoD and to deliver resilient, comfortable 3D-printed barracks for soldiers at Fort Bliss, [Texas],” said Brendan O’Donoghue, vice president of public sector at ICON.

Attack From Page 11 herd, trying to maintain silence and stay upwind from their position. At one point we looked up to find that the elk were completely hidden from view. The landscape full of alders and tall grass had obscured the herd of massive animals completely. I felt we may have lost them for good. We had nearly given up, when we stumbled to the top of a bluff and found ourselves nearly face-to-face with a huge bull elk, its antlers stretched out like massive branches on a tree. The howling of the wind made my eyes water as I gauged the shot.

I had only seconds before the elk would move out of sight or smell us and bolt.

As the shot rang out across the valley, the large animal weighing about 1,200 pounds fell forward and down the adjacent valley wall. Relief hit me as I

saw that it had not gone over the edge of a cliff face a few yards ahead of it. The difference of a few feet would mean potentially many more hours of labor, packing hundreds of pounds of meat up the steep ravine. We spent the next hour making our way the short distance across the valley to where the elk lay. The huge animal could not be moved by the two of us, so we cut branches and small trees out of the way to access it and began the process of processing the meat and packing it back to camp. We had had great luck by managing to kill an elk on only our second day on the island, however the difficult part was about to begin with many hours of trekking to and from camp with heavy backpacks full of elk ahead.

Early the next morning, we headed back. We needed to use all the available daylight, and then some, to get the meat processed, back to camp, and hung in a nearby tree and away from

As we crested the valley and headed down toward the patch of alders where we had left the remains of the elk the afternoon before, something wasn’t quite right. The bright white game bag tied to a branch to mark the

spot where the elk had fallen was missing. I had hung the bag high enough that it could be seen over the trees from the top of the valley.

“Was it the wind or a bear that knocked it down,” I wondered aloud. “I guess we should be ready for anything.”

About 75 yards from the elk, I put a round in the chamber of my

rifle, and we began talking loudly to ensure that any scavenging wildlife would hear us coming. Fifty yards from the kill, we reached a small meadow, and I was relieved to be able to walk more comfortably again in the tall grass. Birds chirped, the wind slowed, and I took in the natural beauty around me.

The stillness of the moment was broken by the cracking of branches like firecrackers and a low growl. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a grizzly, barreling towards me, less than ten yards away. Its ears were back, head low, charging through alders as if they weren’t there. By the time I turned my body to fire my rifle, the bear had reached me. A paw reached out, and I was airborne and spinning. I landed face down, my rifle beneath me.

A paw pressed my back, the metal frame of my backpack bowed under the bear’s weight as I lay helpless in the grass.
