It’s not a new year’s resolution – it’s National Nutrition Month Senior Airman Jonathon Carnell 60TH AIR MOBILITY WING PUBLIC AFFAIRS
TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — The 60th Medical Group Nutritional Medicine outpatient nutrition clinic and Health Promotion Services have partnered together for multiple events across base highlighting March as National Nutrition Month. With over 18 events across base, the organizations want Airmen, DoD personnel and beneficiaries to know the resources available to them. This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating a World of Flavors.’ “Often times when we eat, we don’t engage with our food,” said Ashley Chappell, Health Promotions Program manager. “Generally, we find ourselves in a rush to scarf down our next meal.” Chappell is motivated to inform the base audience that their next meal could be healthy – even in a rush. The Monarch Dining Facility has color coded tongs for the food options. The green color code indicates nutrient dense, yellow; moderate nutrients and red; low nutrients. Secondly, Chappell said that the Commissary provides a dietitian-approved fueling station for healthy quick options to fuel your body rather than just fill.

Chappell stressed the importance of eating healthy and the quick grab-n-go items base personnel could retrieve if they know where to look. “Many Airmen are not aware that we are here to support them,” said 1st Lt. Lauren Brandl, 60th MDG Outpatient Nutrition Clinic chief. “That’s why we are out here informing Airmen to please utilize us as one of their resources.” Brandl has 15 years of experience as a nutrition specialist and decided to commission in the Air Force based on her passion for assisting Airmen and the community where she serves. “People may be dwindling in their new year goals, but this is not the time to quit,” said Brandl. “We want to reignite some people or introduce them to a new culture.” The event coordinators hold a personal connection to their initiative. “I love helping people,” Chappell said. “Being able to promote wellness is important to me. My role on base is to help mold healthy behaviors to eliminate bad things to happen to your body.” For more information contact your first sergeant or call Health Promotions at (707) 4317417.

Slaughter in Chernihiv, devastation in Mariupol US vows Russia will be held accountable Kareem Fahim, Rachel Pannett, Amy Cheng, Jennifer Hassan, Annabelle Timsit, Adela Suliman THE WASHINGTON POST
The fate of hundreds of people sheltering in a Mariupol theater that was destroyed remained unclear Thursday after Ukrainian officials said rescue efforts were hampered by rubble and continued shelling. City officials said the theater was targeted Wednesday by a Russian airstrike; Moscow denied responsibility. Satellite photos from before the attack showed the word “children,” written in large letters on the ground in Russian on both sides of the theater. Meanwhile, in the northern city of Chernihiv, where heavy fighting has been ongoing continued for weeks, at least 10 people were killed by Kremlin Russian forces Wednesday while waiting in line for bread, U.S. and Ukrainian officials said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky compared the Russian bombardment of Mariupol to the Nazis’ attack on Leningrad during World War II,

To our Mariupol,” Zelensky said in a video address, one of several appeals he made Wednesday – one of them to Congress – for international assistance in repelling the Russian invasion. Ukrainian officials announced nine humanitarian corridors to allow civilians to flee besieged cities on Thursday, as well as plans to deliver aid to places in need – a day after they said escape routes were being targeted by Russian forces. More than 3 million refugees have left Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion last month, according to the United Nations. As Russia’s invasion of

Ukraine continues into a fourth week, the British Defense Ministry said Thursday that Kremlin forces have “largely stalled on all fronts” as they suffer heavy losses, with military operations on land, sea and air making “minimal progress.” In an intelligence update, the ministry credited the Ukrainian resistance with being “staunch and well-coordinated.” All major cities and the vast majority of Ukrainian territory remain under Kyiv’s control. But Russia’s lackluster military performance, the British military intelligence agency warned, means the Kremlin is likely to resort to older and less precise weapon systems as the drawn-out invasion uses up its

Biden to speak with Xi Friday Exchange’s ‘Be Fit in bid to keep pressuring Putin Live’ workouts pump Jenny Leonard and Jennifer Jacobs BLOOMBERG NEWS
President Joe Biden will speak Friday with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as the U.S. leader looks to shore up global pressure on Russia to halt its war in Ukraine. “This is part of our ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication,” White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement Thursday. “The two leaders will discuss managing the competition between our two countries as well as Russia’s war against Ukraine and other issues of mutual concern.” The call is Biden and Xi’s first since November, and follows a meeting in Rome Monday between National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi. China has aligned its rhetoric with that of Moscow, and Xi and Vladimir Putin declared in the weeks before the invasion that their countries’ friendship had “no limits.” China has also said it wants to avoid being impacted by U.S. sanctions over the war in Ukraine.

Chinese President Xi Jinping attends the opening of the National People’s Congress at The Great Hall Of The People in Beijing, China, May 22, 2020. The Biden administration has tried to persuade Beijing to use its influence to help end the war, but has generally been reluctant to publicly admonish Beijing for tacit support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Instead, it has said every nation will be judged by history for its role in the war and U.S. officials have warned China both publicly and privately that they’d face serious consequences for helping Russia by softening the blow of sanctions. Beijing denied any efforts to
help Moscow, and Chinese officials said they want to see the conflict end. China’s foreign ministry on Thursday endorsed remarks by its envoy to Ukraine, in which Beijing delivered some of its most supportive comments yet toward the war-torn country. Ambassador Fan Xianrong had told Lviv Governor Maksym Kozytskyi during a meeting Monday that China was a “friendly country for the Ukrainian people” and would “never attack Ukraine,” according to a summary posted on the Lviv government’s website. He went on to praise the strength and unity demonstrated by the Ukrainian people, in an apparent reference to their efforts to resist Russia’s ongoing invasion. Asked about Fan’s comments at a news conference Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said: “China surely supports these remarks by our ambassador in Ukraine. China supports all efforts that are conducive to easing the situation and for a political settlement.” A day earlier, Zhao had said he was “not aware” of the

Exchange Be Fit ambassador Roy Montez and Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Sonja Berry host the live workouts, typically airing at 11 a.m. Central on Mondays, on the Exchange’s Facebook page. The sessions integrate interval training, core workouts, strength exercises and more. “The Exchange started ‘Be Fit Live’ in 2020 to encourage staying active during the Covid-19 pandemic,” Montez said in a press release. “Since then, the weekly broadcasts have created a sense of community. And, best of all, the live workouts can be modified to adjust all fitness levels – anyone can participate.”
Each broadcast begins with a warmup and workout overview. Be Fit ambassadors coach viewers throughout the workout and answer questions from the military community on the livestream feed in real time. “ ‘Be Fit Live’ is great for a quick workout in the office or at home,” said Berry, the Exchange’s assistant director for public health and food safety. “My own fitness levels have increased from the Be Fit workouts – it’s like having a free trainer every week.” The Exchange’s Be Fit program empowers airmen, veterans and families to make healthy lifestyle choices. “The Exchange is committed to producing programming for the military community that encourages a healthy lifestyle,” Travis Air Force Base Exchange General Manager Phonda Bishop said in a press release. “Live workouts are another way the Exchange keeps warfighters ready and resilient year-round.”

How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. KC-46A Pegasus participates in Exercise Ultimate Caduceus Abigail Cole AIR MOBILITY COMMAND PUBLIC AFFAIRS
SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. — A McConnell Air Force Base KC-46A Pegasus joined more than 370 military and civilian personnel for Ultimate Caduceus 2022, Feb. 28 - March 5 at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas. Exercise Ultimate Caduceus is a U.S. Transportation Command-led annual patient movement field training exercise designed to assess the capabilities of and provide field training to aeromedical evacuation teams, critical care air transport teams, medical staging functions and reception and onward movement functions for global patient movement. “This is the first time KC-46 was exercised supporting CONUS patient distribution, which tests capabilities in the continental U.S. to distribute patients coming from a large scale
contingency,” said Lt. Col. Reynel Garcia, Air Mobility Command’s Aeromedical Evacuations Operations and Training Branch Chief. “The KC-46 simulated patients coming from overseas and moving them to longterm and advanced care centers in the U.S.” Aeromedical evacuation plays a significant role in the nation’s global capabilities as it provides time-sensitive and mission-critical patient care during transport to their home installations for follow-on care. “The KC-46 was incorporated into UC22 to validate the ability to move critical patients, familiarize ground personnel, and evacuate large patient loads,” said Garcia. “Additionally, the AE enterprise is moving toward incorporating the KC-46 into Aeromedical Evacuations universal airframe qualifications.” The KC-46 accommodates three times more cargo pallets
and can hold about 30 percent more aeromedical evacuation patients than the KC-135 Stratotanker. The aircraft also brings increased comfort for patients due to the lighting, climate control, and noise level. These comforts allow for better communication with patients and the

Military dentists provide relief and support in Central America Claudia Sanchez-Bustamante MHS COMMUNICATIONS
Cavities or other dental troubles are problems faced by people around the world. In February, hundreds of locals from communities in Honduras received dental and medical treatment during a Global Health Engagement that Joint Task Force-Bravo’s Joint Task Force-Bravo’s website medical element conducted to help the area’s local population. “We treated about 200 citizens, performing multiple extractions and/or providing preventive counseling,” said Army Col. (Dr.) Franklin Florence, the dental officer in charge for the joint medical team. The team deployed to provide preventive medicine, primary care, basic surgeries, dental and pharmacy
services to locals in San José de Oriente and Los Laureles. “Happily, lots of people who otherwise have great difficulty getting to dentists received needed care,” he added. The joint task force operates as the U.S. Southern Command’s lead forward-based element in Central America to promote stability and counter transnational and transregional threat networks. The task force conducts these types of exercises often to develop relationships and partnerships with local officials and entities, “while enhancing citizens’ health,” said Florence. “Our aim is to treat all individuals with respect and truly try to help them,” he said. As part of U.S. SOUTHCOM’s commitment to strengthening partner nation capacities, JTF-Bravo conducts medical
exercises throughout Honduras and Central America every year to support local medical efforts as well as maintain expeditionary readiness, providing realworld benefits to the Honduran population.
Readiness Test These exercises are also a test of medical readiness, “to self-evaluate and improve our readiness while enhancing our partnership with our Central American neighbors,” said Florence. During the event, U.S. military medical personnel partnered with local Hondurans to serve the local population. “The medical readiness exercises represent a good training tool for U.S. military medical

People are key to defending installations, missions from small UAS threats Marisa Alia-Novobilski AIR FORCE MATERIEL COMMAND
WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFNS) -— Tiny in size, low cost and increasingly abundant, small unmanned aircraft systems pose a big threat to military operations and installations worldwide. As the lead command for Counter-sUAS efforts for the Air Force, a team of seven experts from the Air Force Materiel Command Air, Space and Cyberspace Operations Directorate facilitates research and development efforts related to defensive sUAS technology. The team also directs fielding and acquisition efforts of the program office for the cutting-edge capabilities required to mitigate the growing threat. “Small unmanned aircraft systems continue to evolve and threaten the security and missions of Air Force personnel at home and abroad,” said Katherine Clarke, C-sUAS lead engineer. “They can be difficult to detect, and the increase in commercial availability of systems as well as kits to create a small UAS has increased their use all around. Use of small UAS systems by criminal organizations, terrorists, nation-states such as Russia and China, and other lone actors to obtain information is a proven threat with the potential to cause harm to our people and installations.” Unmanned aircraft are categorized into five groupings based on speed, operating altitude and weight. The Department of Defense defines sUAS as those which fall into groups one through three. Often called drones, these are readily available for purchase in stores and are used recreationally by the public.
“Nowadays it is really easy for someone to purchase a tiny aircraft or drone for personal use, and hobbyists will often purchase small UAS kits that they can build and customize for whatever purpose they desire,” Clarke said. “Our concerns are not so much the UAS themselves, but the potential threat they pose when operated on or near our installation airspace.” In recent years there are numerous reports by airports and military airfields of sUAS interrupting flight operations when flown in congested airspace. The use of mounted cameras can lead to the gathering of real-time intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance when they are flown over military installations or training areas. Additionally, Clarke explained, there are reports of sUAS being weaponized and used by adversaries to execute a variety of missions, including payload delivery. “These are just a few of the domestic threats our teams are concerned with related to small unmanned aircraft systems, but there are many more. Our teams work to find technical solutions to mitigate sUAS threats to our installations and people, but we also rely on our Air Force personnel and communities to help identify suspicious sUAS activity--similar to the way we ask for help in reporting any potential threat,” Clarke said. Raising awareness of a sUAS incident on an Air Force installation follows the same general process used when providing an oral or written account of any other suspicious activity around or on a base. Personnel can contact the Air Force installation’s Law Enforcement Desk, the Security Forces base defense operations center, or if those options

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (also known as UA, UAS, UAV, & Drones) are categorized as Group 1 (mini and micro systems) through Group 5 strategic-level assets. Groups are based on speed, operating altitude, and weight. are not available, they can contact the local civilian law enforcement agency to make a report. Knowing what to look for when making a report is key, Clarke said. “It is easy to misidentify satellites, manned aircraft and small meteors as a small UAS. However, a key identifying feature is the distinct, high-pitch buzzing noise made by small UAS rotors
as they cut through the air. This noise is usually within a few hundred meters of its location. Individuals may also see either static or blinking lights, which all drones are required to have for navigation and anti-collision needs,” Clarke said. Clarke and her team have created an sUAS Identification Guide that provides detailed information to help personnel better understand the platforms and
reporting requirements. As she and her team continue to develop and field the technology to counter sUAS threats, the support of personnel all around is key to success. “We all have a role in protecting our installations from adversary threats. Being familiar with sUAS platforms and reporting methods is essential to our collaborative success,” Clarke said.

ability to quickly address patient needs. “Ultimate Caduceus gives our military medical personnel an excellent opportunity to practice their operational skillsets and joint interoperability in a contingency environment,” said Maj. Noah Wood, Air Mobility Command Surgeon General’s lead exercise planner. This year’s Ultimate Caduceus participants include U.S. Air Force Aeromedical crews and Critical Care Air Transport Teams, En Route Patient Staging Systems, a Federal Coordinating Center, and interagency partners. “This exercise has given us the opportunity to work with the Federal Coordinating Center here at Joint Base San Antonio,” said Wood. “The FCC here has a robust relationship with their local community, which gives us a better understanding of how they operate and what we can expect if the support is ever needed.” USTRANSCOM is the combatant command charged with moving Department of Defense’s ill and injured patients to appropriate levels of medical care. UC22 will validate the readiness of the command’s patient movement enterprise to scale up forces and deploy sufficient medical assets to provide care in a contested environment. “This exercise allows our airmen to experience operating in an environment outside their day to day roles,” said Wood. “It helps prepare our medics to do what they do best; save lives whether it is in the air or on the ground.”

This is not new to Florence, who has worked as a civilian and Army dentist in 12 countries. “All health care professionals recognize that oral health is truly the ‘gateway’ to our nutrition and overall health,” said Florence. “Keeping most of your teeth, and keeping your oral health is one very important key to long life and overall health.” As for the future, he’s hopeful for the broader cadre of services these engagements will be able to provide, such as restorative services. “We are testing new equipment in the field that we will be able to utilize in the future,” he said. “To be able to work with, educate, and sometimes treat people is a great privilege.”

Electric From Page 11 bird and demonstrates remarkable capability in migrating from pole to pole each year, covering nearly 25,000 miles. With ALIA, BETA has thus targeted a range of 250 nautical miles and a current top speed of approximately 150 knots, with a recharge time of under an hour and a wingspan of 50 feet. In addition to the aircraft, BETA is
also rolling out a cross-country charging infrastructure to power electric transportation. To date, the company has more than 60 charging stations online or in development from Vermont to Arkansas, with additional sites planned. Griffiths, AFWERX airworthiness and test lead and chief of engineering, commended BETA on building an innovative company culture while developing their aircraft. “BETA has developed a unique eVTOL air system that
is the complete package and includes an air vehicle and charging network that will surely compete well in this emerging competitive market,” Griffiths said. “However, that is not surprising for a company that has embraced aviation; every employee is encouraged to take flight training, and their office spaces overlook their hangar where all of the BETA magic is happening. It has been a pleasure to work and fly with such a motivated and innovative group of people.”
TRAVIS TAILWIND 13 Before completing their historic test flight, Griffiths and Appleby underwent extensive safety and preparedness training. They completed aircraft academics ahead of their arrival in South Burlington, having received comprehensive ALIA manuals and additional materials compiled by the BETA engineers who built the aircraft. Ground school for both Air Force pilots commenced on March 7. These sessions covered every aspect of piloting ALIA, including individual courses on
its structures, batteries, electric motors, flight controls, aerodynamics, and avionics as well as preflight and extensive safety training. On March 8, both pilots underwent simulator training where they were able to fly the exact test flight route planned for the demonstration. Following this training, on March 9, Griffiths and Appleby took turns piloting ALIA for several flight demonstrations, becoming the first Air Force pilots

Accountable From Page 2 stockpile of more sophisticated weaponry. These dated weapons are less militarily effective and more likely to cause civilian casualties, it said. In Washington, President Joe Biden for the first time publicly called his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, a “war criminal.” Moscow denounced the remark as “unacceptable and unforgivable.” Washington is sending more military aid to Ukraine, and an adviser to
Zelensky said Ukrainian forces are launching counteroffensives in several areas. The new U.S. weapons shipments were announced as the Pentagon assessed for the first time that Russia is discussing how to send “replacement” forces to Ukraine to make up for its combat losses. Russia, in addition to its continued bombardment of major Ukrainian cities by land, began shelling cities and towns around the key port city of Odessa on Wednesday, the Pentagon said. The United States also observed increased naval activity by Russian forces in the Black Sea, including by armored
landing craft. The mayor of the besieged Ukrainian port of Mariupol called a Russian strike on a local theater where civilians were sheltering a “terrible tragedy” in a video late Wednesday. “Today there was a terrible tragedy, another tragedy, in our already mangled Mariupol, of which there is already practically nothing left,” Mayor Vadym Boychenko said in a video posted on Telegram. He said a “direct strike” hit the theater Wednesday and blamed Russian forces, who have denied responsibility. Satellite images from before the
March 18, 2022 attack showed the word “children” written in large white letters on the ground in Russian on both sides of the theater. “We live in frightening times that are called war. . . . We want to close our eyes and forget, like a bad dream, everything that is happening to us now – but we open them and see war again, we see the devastation, we see all this horror,” he added in a bleak video address. “We know that, unfortunately, today many were not lucky,” Boychenko said. However, no official figures had been released on casualties as of Thursday morning. While the fate of
hundreds of residents who had been sheltering in the Mariupol theater remained unclear, Ukrainian officials said Thursday that rescue efforts were being hampered by rubble and continued shelling. Serhiy Taruta, a Ukrainian politician, wrote on Facebook that there was “good news” Thursday and that many people had emerged alive from the theater. Oleksiy Honcharenko, a lawmaker from Odessa, also shared an update on Telegram saying that the bomb shelter in the theater’s basement had withstood the strike and that, despite

to fly in an eVTOL aircraft. In the aircraft with Griffiths and Appleby sat BETA test pilot Camron Guthrie and Lochie Ferrier. “It was a blessing and honor to conduct the first airman flight for the Air Force in the ALIA250, which was designed, built, and maintained by the dedicated professionals of BETA,” Appleby said. “Special thanks to Josh Lane and Agility Prime for coordinating the test approval and execution and the entire
BETA team for providing our training and letting us fly their aircraft. I am excited to watch BETA continue to develop their revolutionary aircraft for civil and military use cases and grateful for the opportunity to experience electric flight.” Griffiths spoke to the value of this demonstration to the future use case determinations and certification of eVTOL aircraft for both defense and commercial application. “Today’s Air Force qualitative evaluation flight is the first of many that we will be doing with BETA Technologies and our other Agility Prime
TRAVIS TAILWIND 15 vendors,” Griffiths said. “In addition to accelerating these company’s path to FAA type certification by providing access to USAF engineering expertise and test infrastructure, we are also evaluating these prototypes for opportunities to utilize them for unique military missions. We need government pilots to accomplish those evaluations and this is the first step in developing the training and experimentation plans to do so.” Kyle Clark, BETA founder and CEO, expressed his excitement for BETA’s continuing partnership with the Air Force
through Agility Prime. “For over two years, we’ve worked hand-in-hand with the Air Force Agility Prime team to refine our electric aircraft, and we’ve made great progress together,” said Clark. “It’s an honor to have Hank Griffiths and Major Appleby fly our aircraft, and we’re humbled by the Air Force’s continued support and confidence in our engineering. This flight signifies an important milestone, providing the opportunity for a clean future for our nation’s military and a path to fossil fuel independence.”

Accountable From Page 14 the debris, “people are coming out of the shelter alive and well!” The BBC also reported that a Ukrainian lawmaker, Dmytro Gurin, whose parents were in the city, said more than 1,000 people sought safety in the theater, among them children, but that it appeared “most of them have survived,” he said. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova denied Thursday that Moscow had bombed the theater, calling it a “lie.” She added: “The Russian armed forces do not bomb cities, and everyone is well aware of this.. . . The truth will still break through.” Boychenko, the Mariupol mayor, promised to raise his city from the ruins. Mariupol has faced intense attacks from Russian forces as a strategic southern port and has been largely cut off from the outside world for weeks. A maternity hospital made headlines last week after it came under bombardment. Ukrainians blamed Russian forces; Moscow has claimed, without evidence, that the hospital was emptied of patients and used as a base for Ukrainian military activity.

The world’s two largest economies also continue sparring over human rights and economic policies. The Biden administration has yet to unveil actions against what it considers China’s harmful non-market practices. Biden and Xi last spoke in November, during a video conference in which Biden stressed that the two superpowers need to establish guardrails to ensure their competition doesn’t veer into conflict.
