Air Force medics continue deployments to civilian hospitals and care facilities Shireen Bedi AIR FORCE SURGEON GENERAL PUBLIC AFFAIRS

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — While the nation is seeing a decline in Covid-19 cases, hospitals and other facilities across the country are still reeling. At the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, nearly 1,000 U.S. Air Force active duty, Reserve, and Air National Guard medics are serving in civilian hospitals, care facilities, and other public institutions. The Air Force Medical Service has continued to step up as part of the federal Covid-19 response, working alongside other military departments and federal agencies. The Air Force has upwards of 24 active duty and Reserve teams currently deployed across the country, made up of pulmonologists, trauma nurses, respiratory therapist and medical technicians. Civilian medical facilities and other institutions in 34 states are also receiving support from Air National Guard medics. “As military medics, it is our duty to go where our nation calls us, and that means continuing our Covid-19 mission,” said Air Force Surgeon General Lt. Gen. Robert Miller. “We ask a lot of our medics, who have played an integral role in the joint fight against Covid-19, working across federal agencies, military departments and the entire health care system.” Travis Air Force Base deployed two 20-person teams, one to Connecticut and another to Louisiana. A 15-person team was also sent to California, specifically supporting the Emanate Health Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina. “The hospital itself has been very welcoming and making the process very easy for us,” said 1st Lt. Katelyn Warren, 60th

Eli Stokols and Jennifer Haberkorn LOS ANGELES TIMES

WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden announced new sanctions on more than a dozen Russian oligarchs and their families, as pressure continued to build on Capitol Hill for an even tougher response to Moscow a week after it invaded Ukraine, particularly a ban on imports of Russian oil and gas. The White House imposed sanctions on 19 wealthy Russian individuals and 47 of their family members and close associates, including President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitri Peskov, and Alisher Usmanov, one of the wealthiest men in Russia. Unwilling to engage Russia’s military directly, the United States and Europe have also increased their shipments of weapons and defense materiel to Ukraine in recent days, as live television coverage of Russia’s unprovoked aggression and social media posts from Ukraine have galvanized the West. Meanwhile, both the U.S. and European leaders continue to ratchet up the economic

targeting the elites’ family members, the administration is aiming to prevent them from easily transferring assets to spouses or children, a loophole often used in similar situations to evade sanctions. The latest move came amid new indications from Putin that he has no intention of halting the war until he has overtaken all of Ukraine. And it marked the latest effort by Washington

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited U.S. troops at Lask Airbase, Poland Monday. In a press conference after the visit, Stoltenberg said Russian President Vladimir Putin has shattered the peace in Europe. “The Russian assault is totally unacceptable. And, it is enabled by Belarus,” he said. “We welcome the leading role of Poland,” Stoltenberg said, noting that Poland has opened its border to hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing the conflict. NATO will always stand together, he said, mentioning that fighter jets from the United States are now flying alongside the Polish Air Force, keeping the skies over NATO nations safe 24/7. French troops are arriving in Romania, as well, Stoltenberg noted. NATO’s commitment to Article 5 is iron-clad, he said, referring to the alliance’s collective

Wolters, the commander of U.S. European Command and NATO’s supreme allied commander for Europe, visited NATO’s multinational battlegroup in Tapa, Estonia. They were joined by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Wolters thanked Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas for hosting U.S., U.K. and other NATO forces in her nation. The general noted that rigorous military training has enabled U.S. forces to be confident, responsive, resilient, competent and capable in whatever tasks are asked of them. Comedian, TV host Sheryl Underwood also served in the Air Force David Vergun DOD NEWS

Comedian and actress Sheryl Underwood enlisted in the Air Force as a field medic in 1981, after graduating from high school in Atwater. Basic training was at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, where she couldn’t even run a mile upon arrival. But through encouragement by her drill instructors, she was able to complete the challenging physical requirements. Subsequent duty stations included Travis Air Force Base, California; Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama; Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas; and, Castle Air Force Base, California. Later, she moved to Chicago and joined the O’Hare Air Reserve Station, an Air Force Reserve unit at O’Hare Field. While there, she deployed in support of several exercises that included two Exercise Reforgers in West Germany and Team Spirit in South Korea. She first became noticed to the public as the first female finalist in 1989’s “Miller Lite Comedy Search.” Since September 2011, she has been one of the hosts on the CBS Daytime talk show “The Talk.” Also, she hosts “Sheryl

Underwood Radio” which has 511 domestic and international affiliates, and “The World According to Sheryl – The Podcast of Sheryl Underwood Radio.” Underwood has had several minor acting roles, including Bad Mouth Bessie in the 1998 film “I Got the Hook Up” and Catfish Rita in the 2005 film “Beauty Shop.” After her entertainment career was established, Underwood found time to entertain the troops through USO tours in Kuwait and Afghanistan. She also spoke at the Academy of Country Music’s All-Star Salute to the Troops April 7, 2014 in Las Vegas, Nevada. “It’s an honor and a privilege to even be invited to something like this because, you know, we love our country, but we definitely support our troops who are standing up for us. And it’s not just the person in the service that’s serving, it’s their families as well,” she said. Underwood is founder and chief executive officer of the Pack Rat Foundation for Education, a non-profit organization, where she’s raising money to support the 105 historically black colleges and universities and the students committed to pursuing higher education.

US stands with Ukraine, Biden says in State of the Union speech Jim Garamone DOD NEWS

In his first State of the Union address since taking office more than a year ago, President Joe Biden inspired bi-partisan applause for the determination of the Ukrainian people against the Russian onslaught and said the United States stands with

Ukraine in its struggle. The president used the first part of the State of the Union address to a stress that America will stand against dictators. “Six days ago, Russia’s Vladimir Putin sought to shake the foundations of the free world thinking he could make it bend to his menacing ways, but he badly miscalculated,” Biden said. “He

thought he could roll into Ukraine and the world would roll over. Instead, he met a wall of strength he never imagined: He met the Ukrainian people.” Biden praised the Ukrainian people for their “fearlessness, their courage, their determination.” He said their stand against the Russian invaders “inspires

Biden From Page 6 the world.” The halls of Congress were brightened by representatives, senators and guests wearing the colors of the Ukrainian flag. It was truly a bipartisan moment when Biden asked the assembled legislators to applaud the courageous stand of the Ukrainian people. “Throughout our history we’ve learned this lesson: When dictators do not pay a price for their aggression, they cause more chaos,” the president said. “They keep moving. And the costs and the threats to America and the world keep rising.” This was why the allies founded the NATO alliance in the ashes of World War II. The defensive alliance was to bring stability and peace to a war-ravaged continent, where millions died in the insanity of Hitler’s war. NATO is still relevant. It is unified against Putin and his invasion. “It matters,” Biden said. “American diplomacy matters. American resolve matters.” Biden condemned Putin’s latest premeditated attack on Ukraine and said the Russian leader rejected repeated efforts at diplomacy. “He thought the West and NATO wouldn’t respond,” Biden said. “And he thought he could divide us at home. Putin was wrong. We were ready.” The president told the legislators that America and its allies were ready for Putin. “We spent months building a coalition of other freedom-loving nations from Europe and the Americas to Asia and Africa to confront Putin,” he said. “I spent countless hours unifying our European allies.” The United States and its allies and partners shared with the world “what we knew Putin was planning and precisely how he would try to falsely justify his aggression. We countered Russia’s lies with truth,” he said. “And now that he has acted the free world is holding him accountable.”

TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE — An all-Black crew of 18 Travis AFB airmen participated in a heritage flight to Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina, and Warner Robins, Georgia from Feb. 18-24 in recognition of Black Heritage Month. Black service members have in U.S. history, but also serves as a reminder of the continuous fight against racial disparity throughout the U.S. Air Force. “Representation matters,” said Capt. Tyler Weaver, 22nd Airlift Squadron pilot. After surveys, interviews and reexamining past reports, the Air Force Inspector General made its conclusions. It “confirmed racial disparity exists for Black/African American airmen and space professional in the

areas of military discipline and career development opportunities,” according to the initial report released in 2020. “This flight was directly combating what that report brought out,” said Weaver. “We want to show people that they can fly, that they can be in these career fields and they can thrive in them as well.” The crew demonstrated just that during their first

Legacy From Page 8 stop at the “Accelerating the Legacy” heritage event which honored the Tuskegee Airmen during a two-day event highlighting professional development and community outreach at Joint Base Charleston, South Carolina. Local middle and high school students toured various aircraft including a C-5 Super Galaxy from Travis AFB and had the opportunity to meet Dr. Eugene J. Richardson Jr., a documented original Tuskegee Airman. “We stand on the shoulders of giants and to have actually met one of those guys is absolutely inspiring,” said Weaver. Weaver described as a child how he looked up to Tuskegee Airmen in multiple blockbuster hits, and meeting one in person, he felt star-struck. The crew then flew to Warner Robins, Georgia, where they spoke to students at Northside High School in Warner Robins, Georgia, Feb. 23, 2022. “Can you see yourself as a pilot, flight engineer or loadmaster?” Weaver asked the class full of high school students and Junior ROTC cadets. Weaver expressed the reason why they were there – to show them that they belong and can accomplish these things. “Like I said earlier, representation matters and we want to show that the [minority students] are represented in these career fields in the Air Force and particularly in the flying community as well,” said Weaver. Within only two percent of airmen being pilots, only two percent of those pilots are Black according to Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. Air Force of Staff. Weaver believes this kind of mission can inspire and bring people together and culture inside the Air Force bringing out the good in all of us. “I want us to continue pushing this narrative, this legacy that we are trying to make with these heritage flights,” said Weaver. “Every single year we know February is Black History Month but we want to make this a norm so that anybody that is whatever ethnicity, whatever nationality, whatever gender or creed know that they belong here in the Air Force.” This mission gave Weaver and the rest of the crew members a unique experience and a great sense of pride. How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

Medics From Page 11 Travis Air Force Base. “We are particularly trained to bring unique skill sets to help Americans on American soil, and it’s just a tremendous thing.” These deployments in support of FEMA were approved by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III Dec. 30, 2021. “Air Force core values and our AFMS Trusted Care culture promotes competency and individual leadership within complex systems, which prepares our

medics to enter an unfamiliar environment and quickly provide valuable professional skills and leadership,” said Col. James Sampson, Air Force Surgeon General chief surgical consultant. “In the long term, I expect that for many individuals the experience of working alongside our civilian and joint partners across the U.S. will result in even greater commitment to service. The lessons learned from this will enable greater agility and greater capabilities to meet the challenges of tomorrow.” Air National Guard medical personnel are currently deployed to 34 states, totaling nearly 500 doctors, nurses and other

medical specialties deployed to long-term care and nursing homes, mobile blood drives, and Covid-19 vaccine administration facilities. “This is a Total Force effort, and whether we are responding in our state or across the nation, we are wearing Air Force blue, and our participation in these missions assists the goals of the chief of staff of the Air Force and the Department of Defense,” said Maj. Gen. Brett A. Wyrick, Air National Guard assistant to the Surgeon General. “Our participation assures the people of America that we are always ready and always there in time of need.”

While these are temporary deployments, there is also an impact to some military treatment facilities. As Air Force medics deploy, staff at military treatment facilities are working to ensure patients continue getting the care they need. “The nation has leaned on our medics for the last two years and I cannot express my gratitude enough for their incredible dedication,” said Chief Master Sgt. Dawn Kolczynski, Medical Enlisted Force chief and Enlisted Corps chief. “Each time we ask you to respond to our nation’s need, you have stepped up with integrity and excellence in all you do.”

Sanctions From Page 3 to force him to recalculate his strategy through a devastating economic pressure campaign. On Wednesday, the Justice Department announced a team to enforce sanctions and export restrictions and to seize luxury assets belonging to Russia’s wealthiest citizens. The administration and European allies have thus far avoided sanctioning Russia’s energy sector, attempting to mitigate the impact on global energy markets and consumers. By putting the financial screws to Russian millionaires and billionaires, the administration hopes they will be able to force those oligarchs to distance themselves from Putin and urge him to find a diplomatic off-ramp to end the war in Ukraine. But so far the economic and geopolitical effects of the swift global response to Moscow – the ruble has nosedived, Russian planes have been barred from European and U.S. airspace and long neutral countries such as Finland and Sweden have suggested a newfound interest in joining NATO – have not deterred Putin. On Thursday after the Russian leader’s 90-minute telephone call with French President Emmanuel Macron, an Élysée official concluded that Putin was determined to conquer Ukraine no matter the cost, stating flatly that “the worst is yet to come.” As the shelling of Ukraine’s major cities continues a week after Putin began the invasion, political pressure continues to build in Washington to sanction Russia’s oil and gas industry. Republicans argue that going after the country’s energy exports would cripple Russia far more dramatically than other actions the U.S. has already taken.

“Their Achilles’ heel is that their economy depends on oil and gas revenue. Never in the history of warfare have we had a chance to deliver such a decisive blow without firing a shot,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. “If the Ukrainians can stand up to a tank, if a grandmother can get a rifle, surely to God we can produce more oil and gas.” Several Republicans as well as Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana have introduced bills to ban the U.S. import of Russian oil. Although Europe is far more dependent on Russian energy resources, the U.S. buys almost 700,000 barrels of oil per day from Russia, according to Sen. Dan Sullivan, R-Alaska. “That’s $17 billion that we are putting into Putin’s war chest,” he said. “This is national security suicide.” So far, the administration has shied away from the oil and gas sanctions. The move, likely to wreak hardship on ordinary Russians, could rally them behind their leader. At the same time, such measures would likely increase oil prices on the global market and could lead to significant economic and political pushback at home. “The president’s objective has been to maximize impact on President Putin and Russia while minimizing impact to us and our allies and partners,” Psaki said Thursday. “We don’t have a strategic interest in reducing the global supply of energy.” Many Democrats are skeptical of the idea, in part because it would require the United States to increase domestic production to make up for it, but top House Democrats are on board. “I’m all for that. Ban it,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md., reiterated the same stance.
