Take a Stroll back in time in Woodland Enterprise staff Woodland will return to the 1880s at the popular Stroll Through History on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The event features a Heritage Homes Tour of five private residences from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as bicycle and walking tours of historic neighborhoods and landmark buildings.

The selection of the Heritage Homes is based on the age and historical significance of the building and the appropriateness of interior decoration and landscaping to the period of the building.

The landmark buildings that will be open to strollers include Woodland Train Depot, Woodland Opera House, The Gibson House, Boy Scout Cabin, The Roth, and the Freeman-Schmauderer building (First and Main).

The Stroll has a long history in Woodland.

In the spring of 1988, Lloyd and Ida Ingraham opened their Victorian home at 620 Cross St. as a fundraiser for the first Stroll through History, which took place in the fall of the same year to celebrate the history of Woodland.

There is no entry fee and no parking fee.

Visitors can purchase an open-homes tour ticket for $25 online (strollthroughhistory. com/tickets), and at Corner Drug, 602 Main, The Nest, 510 Main St., or Local Inspirations, 524 Main St., in Woodland.

They will be available for $30 at the information booth at Heritage Plaza, at Second and Main streets, on the day of the Stroll.

Money raised during the annual celebration of Woodland is used to improve the Stroll Through History event and to fund local historic restoration and community cultural resources.

The following homes will be open during the Stroll Through history on Saturday, Oct. 5.

Home is a classic example of Tudor Revival. The style emphasizes steeply pitched roofs, a major front-facing gable, stucco or masonry walls, and tall, prominent chimneys. All of these elements are present, including the faux-masonry entrance arch to the recessed front porch. The front arch becomes a major architectural element that is replicated in the arched dining room window on the left, and the arched secondstory window at the peak of the front gable.

Interior: The arch motif is repeated in the interior between the interior entry hall and the living room.

History: The home was built by the noted Woodland builder Joseph Motroni in 1934 in Beamer’s Woodland Park, which was developed in 1914 by the Keystone Investment Company. Motroni built many homes in Beamer

Park and in 1936 developed his own subdivision immediately to the west. For many years Gerald and Lynette Ulrich lived in the house. Dawn Brown and Keith Underwood purchased the home in 2018.

Gardens: There is a small lawn and garden nestled between the house and the original garage, which has been expanded and converted into a workshop.

Built in 1874, this magnificent Victorian emphasizes its architectural details through the use of contrasting colors.

The balconies and balustrades continue over the entrance to the back parlor and bay window to the south, and the bay window on the north. The quoins at the corners of the house are emphasized through the use of off-white paint and, at the top of the house, the seven elaborate cornices on the front of the house are set off by the colored panels beneath and between them.

These details continue on all sides of the home.

The back half of the house, which was an addition, matches the original perfectly. The corbels on the addition were made by owner Carole Scibienski’s late husband, Robert to match the originals.

Interior: The front and back parlors and the dining room, all with 12-foot ceilings, have ornate decoration.

Note the plaster ceiling medallion and the elaborate plaster crown molding. In some rooms, molding was missing and Carole created new moldings.

In the dining room, which had suffered fire and water damage, she created a new

ceiling medallion. The stunning redwood paneling and railings in the dining room and back parlor were fabricated by Carole’s husband.

All of the marble and tile was installed by Carole. The rear half of the house is newer construction but beautifully matches the original home.

Garden: Roses are clearly a favorite flower. The cypress hedge to the north gives privacy to the pool area. Be sure to see the historical displays in the back yard.

Ownership: The house was built for William G. and Jennie Hunt in 1874. Mr. Hunt was a “‘49er” who became a successful farmer and a shareholder in the Bank of Woodland. Bob and Carole Scibienski purchased the house in 1996. The previous owner had created the rear addition, but not in the historical style and the dining room ceiling had been lowered after a fire.

The Scibienskis rolled up their sleeves and worked for four years to restore the house. It received the Heritage Home award in 2001.

Lin Home 409 Casa Linda Dr. History: An excellent example of a Mid-Century Modern is located at 409 Casa Linda. The postWWII period ushered in a great demand for housing, resulting in Woodland’s first subdivisions but it was also a period of innovation in architectural design.

In 1954, the now distinguished Sacramento firm of Dreyfuss & Blackford was retained to design an artistic home with modern sensibilities for Marietta and Phil Leiser of Knights Landing. The Leiser family wanted to move to Woodland so their children could attend city schools. After viewing some of Sacramento’s new house styles, they retained the creative talents of Dreyfuss & Blackford to design their Woodland home. The Leisers wanted a large home for their growing family, but beyond that, the architects were given free artistic license to create. The result was a stylish “cutting-edge” modern with family functionality, including the emerging

“great room” concept, so popular today.

Garden: As one approaches the Casa Linda entrance you cannot help but notice the beautiful grove of ginko trees, an ancient Chinese tree well adapted to Woodland climate. The trees were planted by the Leiser family when the home was built, and are greatly appreciated by today’s owners, the Brian Lin family. The masonry walls in the front form a small courtyard and enclosure, reminiscent of the designs of Frank Lloyd Wright and his use of masonry.

Interiors: Brian Lin designed the kitchen remodel, which includes the use of travertine stone flooring that will eventually continue to the outdoor patio. The kitchen and family room form an “L” shape around the outdoor patio with unobstructed views to both sides of the house through tall rear windows. All windows are double-paned for energy efficiency and exterior noise mitigation. Take note of the clerestory windows at ceiling level, which create privacy, but provide natural light. A long hall-

way connects the family and public spaces to bedrooms. The bedrooms are efficiently planned with closets and built-in drawers, while slanted ceilings create a sense of spaciousness.

HISTORIC: Dining room chandelier is original to the Craftman bungalo From Page C5

Montoya Perez Home 72 First St. Exterior: This charming Craftsman bungalow was built in 1917. The front of the house features offset front-facing gables with one gable forming the front porch. The substantial columns that frame the porch are a traditional Craftsman feature. The bright Mexican tiles on the porch stair risers are a unique and welcoming touch. The beveled glass front door opens directly into the living room.

Interior: This home has the classic Craftsman wood interior with built-in bookcases separating the living and dining rooms.

These bookcases are topped with columns that match the porch columns. The bookcase on the left also features a hidden dropdown desk. The rich saturated colors used throughout the home complement the wood detailing, which has never been painted.

The dining room chandelier is original to the house. The boxed beams on the coffered ceiling were restored by the previous owner, BG Tackett. The built-in buffet, window bench, wainscoting, and plate rail are all original to the house.

The kitchen has been modernized with careful attention to maintaining the Craftsman style. The double-hung windows over the country sink are original. The back porch area has been converted to an office space with a sleeping loft, a slate tiled hall to the backyard, and a second bathroom. The front bedroom is currently being used as an office, and the bookcases were built by Maceo using old doors for the frames. The original bathroom has a clawfoot tub and wall-mounted sink. The back bedroom features a fulllength portrait of Alejandra’s grandmother, framed in an antique glass door. All of the artwork displayed in the home was created by owners Maceo Montoya and Alejandra Perez and members of their families.

Gardens: The backyard is a world of its own. The bright blue fence is built with straw bales. The garage has been converted to a light-filled studio. The small building with the antique stained glass is a woodfired sauna built by the previous owners, BG and Robin Tackett. The pigs on the sauna porch are fun family heirlooms brought from Mexico. Ownership: The house was built for Clyde and Leah Dodds in 1917. Woodland’s first Craftsman had been built in 1912, so the Dodds were right in step with the new style.

The Craftsman design was a deliberate contrast to the Victorian and Queen Anne building styles that had been popular for so long. Craftsman bungalows were meant to be welcoming and unpretentious. The interior use of unpainted wood was meant to convey a natural hand-made look. Maceo and Alejandra purchased the home from Robin Tackett in 2012.

HISTORIC: European features designed to emulate the NY Yacht Club From Page C6

Morgan’s Event Center Second and Lincoln Exterior: Though the architect is unknown, this once rather nondescript building’s history began in 1958 when it was erected as a place of worship for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

It later served as Woodland’s Senior Center before being purchased by Jeff and Kellie Morgan in 2008. Their vision for a unique venue for celebrations, meetings and community events has been realized through extensive renovation and elegant upgrades.

Note the new but stately columns, low stone railings surrounding a patio lit by custom-made gas lights and warmed by a corner fireplace, and the imposing entry doors.

The building’s antique chimney pots were imported from England to vent four fireplaces, only one of which is original.

Interior: Stepping into the foyer, it’s almost impossible to imagine this was a grassy outdoor area before being enclosed and vaulted with wooden beams salvaged from Oakland’s trolley barn. The huge wall clock is a French treasure discovered in a Carmel antique shop and mounted on newly installed stone that covers the building’s original entrance.

Designed to emulate the New York Yacht Club, Lincoln Avenue’s rich wood paneling and vintage European features flow throughout, including in The Pub, where the walls’ finish was roughened to suggest an imagined history of smoke-filled gentlemen’s gatherings around a game table beside the imported German safe and its built-in humidor.

Today groomsmen gather here to prepare for nuptials, awaiting the bride and her attendants who are being pampered in a new suite down the hall. Don’t miss the stunning bathrooms, nor the custom chef ’s kitchen whose counter height is a reminder of the stage that once occupied the space and was home to senior aerobics instruction.

For guests who seek a quiet, dignified venue for meetings, the conference room is equipped with furnishings reminiscent of the White House, complemented by modern technology.

Landmark buildings welcome visitors Special to The Enterprise

St. Luke’s Episcopal Church 515 Second St. Open to public 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

St. Luke’s Episcopal church is modeled after the original Anglican Church in America, built in Smithfield Virginia in 1632. The church is a beloved Woodland landmark particularly famous for its three stained glass windows above the altar — installed in 1922 and created by the world famous Louis Tiffany studios.

This year we will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of the California Pacific Railroad arriving in Woodland. Please stop by to see what we have been doing.

The Historic Woodland Train Depot was built in 1911 and was the third of four train depots that were built in Woodland and the only original remaining. This landmark building has witnessed many historical events and has had many famous people walk through its waiting room doors to board trains heading north and south. The depot is owned and operated by the Sacramento Valley Historical Railways — a Woodland nonprofit organization that saved and has been restoring this historical landmark.

The Roth 427-431 Main St. The Roth / Half Moon Fruit & Produce Building is next to Father Paddy’s Public House on Main Street.

The Roth brothers were the developers of the building, which is constructed of pressed brick. For many years the building was occu-

pied by hardware dealers, including one of the original tenants Chris Seiber & Company.

Chris Sieber Jr. was born in Woodland, graduated from Pierce Business College, and went to work at Thomas B. Gibson’s hardware store — located in the old “Gibson Block” across the street near Elm and Main. In 1903 Sieber bought Gibson’s hardware store and moved the business to the Roth Building in 1912 shortly after its completion.

Seiber’s hardware store — the local dealer for the John Deere Plow Company — also sold Studebaker wagons and carriages, and manufactured harnesses. Sieber was married to the former Lillian

Buck. He was actively involved in local education and served on the Woodland school board. Sieber, son of German immigrants Chris and Christiana Sieber, also operated the Pacific House at Elm and Main Streets until 1907.

The upstairs of The Roth was originally used for offices and later as hotel rooms and apartments.

In 1991 Karl Fisher, Judy Boyer and Joe Johnson of Woodland renovated the building. The warehouse attached to the rear of the building along Dead Cat Alley dates back to c.1900 when it was part of the Fashion Livery Stable, purchased by the Roth brothers in 1912. The Roth is now

owned by Half Moon Fruit & Produce Company.

FreemanSchmauderer Building 539 Main St. The Freeman-Schmauderer Building (and Strand Theatre) at First and Main is the site of Woodland’s first post office and the oldest commercial building in town.

In the early days it was home to city founder Frank Freeman’s dry goods business and R.B. Cranston’s first hardware store.

This is also the location of the old Strand Theatre — “Woodland’s Photo-Play House De Luxe,” a 700-seat

silent movie theater owned and operated by Mathilda McGuinness Leland and managed by W.S. Webster.

Most locals know the building as the Diamond E Western Wear store, but other businesses included Piggly Wiggly, E.L. Thompson Tires, Sprouse-Reitz and many others.

There is a N.S.G.W. historical plaque at the front of the building that outlines its history. A new marker created by Victoria Lambert at the rear of the building, near Dead Cat Alley, will be revealed at 9:30 am on Stroll Day. The Stroll Through History committee contributed to the Dead Cat Alley Nine Lives Project marker.

Hayes and Eby are Heritage Heroes

Christy Hayes opened her restaurant, Mojo’s and Kitchen428, in the historic Jackson building in January 2012.

Christy Hayes Christy Hayes is without a doubt one of the most influential individuals in the growth of Woodland’s Historic Downtown.

Christy moved to Woodland in August of 2004 after serving in the Air Force as a heavy diesel mechanic. On her second day here she got a job at Morrison’s. She says, “the rest is history.”

Christy opened her restaurant, Mojo’s and Kitchen 428, in the historic Jackson building in January 2012.

Giving back to the community and celebrating local talent are key focuses for Christy. Every month Mojo’s has a “Cocktail for a Cause” that has a featured drink on the menu. Fifty percent of sales of this drink go directly to charity. Both Kitchen 428 and Mojo’s feature local artists on a rotating basis.

The restaurant also serves as the check-in for the Dickens in the Valley home tour, which benefits the Friends of Meals on Wheels.

Christy holds a car show in front of her business on the third Thursday of the month, from May to October to create a fun community event. The car show brings vintage cars from Woodland, Sacramento, Vacaville and Esparto.

Food Truck Mania — held on the first Sunday of the month — was started by Christy to give Woodland a taste of the regional food truck talent. This event is very popular and brings in themed events during the holidays.

Christy is a huge supporter of local restaurants. She encourages visitors to see all that Woodland dining has to offer. Christy values bringing variety into Woodland dining and knows that supporting each other in this industry is one key to success. In her own words, “rising tides raise all ships,” meaning if the community values the dining options downtown it helps everyone.

In 2012 Christy started the “Swirl and Slice” — a food, wine and beer walk through several downtown Woodland locations with wine, beer and/or food samples. Proceeds from this bi-annual event benefit Yolo Farm to Fork’s

Edible School Garden Programs, which teach kids to grow food and eat healthy.

Christy will be teaching “Adulting 101” using her experience as a heavy diesel mechanic to teach basic car maintenance to teens.

She is also a member of Les Dames d’Escoffier, a philanthropic organization of women leaders in the fields of fine food, beverage and hospitality. The organization also awards scholarships to women for education in local wine, culinary and agricultural programs.

Al Eby For many years Al Eby’s focus has brought attention and recognition to all that Woodland has to offer. Al opened up the Blue Wing Gallery in Historic Downtown Woodland in 2003, and has witnessed and spearheaded many

changes there.

In 2006 Al helped start the First Friday Artwalk. The Artwalk features local artists, musicians and businesses, bringing foot traffic downtown. The extended open hours enable local businesses to attract new customers.

In 2015 Al, along with former Stroll Board President Kelly Newsom, started Visit Woodland. Visit Woodland is a one-stop shopping webpage that contains local news and events while also shedding light on the rich culture and interesting people that live here. The site offers visitors suggestions and insights on local entertainment while also offering an up-to-date calendar of events for many different interests.

Perhaps Al’s biggest accomplishment is starting The California Honey Festival in 2016. It has grown every year with more than 35,000 visitors in 2019. The California Honey festival benefits select bee and pollinator non-profits that do the hard work of research and education to ensure bee health worldwide.

Al stays connected with the needs and wants of the community and finds ways to encourage the types of businesses that meet those needs in Woodland. He has focused on pairing these businesses with local charitable organizations to raise much needed funds for worthy causes.

Al Eby In an effort to help local stores get more exposure and to highlight the many amazing things Woodland has to offer, Al helped develop the Nytch app. This app connects people to locally owned and operated businesses that sell everything from custom floral arrangements to hardware for their next DIY project. Users start by creating a request describing a problem they are working on, or a specific product they need. Nytch matchs that request to local businesses.

Al has been very supportive of the Stroll Through History for many years and continues to be a major influence in the revitalization of Historic Downtown Woodland.

Tour historic Woodland on a bike Special to The Enterprise

Historic Boundaries and Classic Neighborhoods The tour will begin at the post office parking lot and head north on Third St. to Beamer Street. Continuing through Beamer Park via West Keystone we will take riders through Woodland’s earliest planned development — begun in 1918 and finished about forty years later. Many different housing styles reflect the changing fashions in home design. Riders will then head south on College St. following the original boundary lines of Woodland, wending their way through neighborhoods of Victorians, Craftsman bungalows, Spanish Revival homes to the Train Depot. The tour will then return to the Post Office.

This 9 a.m. tour begins at the northeast corner of Third and Court streets. All participants must have bicycle helmets. The tour is about four miles of flat street and will take about an hour.

Our Community Forest: Landmark Trees Bike Tour New Tour!

Trees define Woodland. The “City of Trees” has been Woodland’s motto since at least 1930. But the community’s identification with its trees stretches back to 1861 when the town’s godmother Gertrude Freeman gave Woodland its name. Some of the monarch valley oaks from that era still remain, although they are gradually disappearing due to old age, disease and removal.

Once the scene of thousands of valley oaks, today Woodland contains less than 900 of these native oaks measuring more than 12 inches in diameter, mixed among a wide variety of trees planted in abundance by Woodland citizens throughout its history.

Some of these prominent species — including valley oaks, cork oak, American elm, paradox walnut and Canary Island palms— have been designated city landmarks. This iconic house was shaded by a magnificent valley oak tree, preserving Woodland’s heritage and historical ecology. Influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, the design of this prairie-style house with an attached garage helped launch a new era of Woodland homebuilding reflecting modern, open and informal lifestyles—and the popularity of the automobile.

Entire neighborhoods, which we will explore, would soon be designed around the convenience of cars. Beginning with this iconic Woodland house, strollers will venture deeper into Woodland’s mid-century neighborhoods observing architectural and neighborhood designs from that era, including Ranch style houses promoted by Sunset magazine with the motto: Comfort never goes out of style.

WALKING: Hear touching stories of Yolo County’s pioneers and children From Page C12 years. Learn about these upscale, renovated houses and who lived in them during the early days of Woodland. From a United States Congressman, a bank president, an author and a Women’s Christian Temperance activist, College Street was home to incredibly interesting and influential people.

Fast forward a generation or two and meet some of the people who live on College Street today and continue to preserve these architectural gems for us to enjoy.

This 9 a.m. tour starts at the southeast corner of College and Lincoln streets by the historic Woodland Christian Church.

Barns, Alleys, Oaks and Hidden Surprises New Alleys Added This fun tour is full of surprises that kids (and adults) will love.

This stroll will begin at Dog Gone Alley — one of Woodland’s two downtown alleys — weaving its way into hidden residential alleys.

Strollers will discover some of Woodland’s seldom seen places and observe several barns and carriage houses from the horse and buggy days. Towering native valley oak trees and other specimen trees planted by families from bygone days will be discussed.

This 10 a.m. tour starts at the corner of Second Street and Dog Gone Alley, just south of Main Street.

Charming Second Street: Gothic Treasures, Victorian, Craftsman, Spanish and Tudor Style homes New Tour Near the start of this tour

strollers will see a lovely Arts & Crafts Gothic Revival Church designed by a Berkeley master architect, and later on, a rare Gothic Revival home from the 1870s.

Scattered throughout this tour are houses of many styles, shapes and sizes — including Victorians — plus many from the 20s and 30s, including Craftsman, Spanish eclectic, Tudor and an ancient valley oak tree with a bench providing shady respite on warm days.

Join architect Kevin Bryan for a fun tour as he seeks out new and interesting observations and insights about this charming neighborhood he calls home.

Evoking History: Woodland Cemetery New Tour What better way to spend an October morning than strolling through the beautiful 22-acre grounds of the Woodland Cemetery surrounded by elaborate marble monuments and humble grave markers, protected by a wide assortment of shady trees and watchful century-old ornamental palms. Led by historian Barbara Graham, learn the history of the cemetery, which dates to the 1850s as the site of a small country church and “graveyard” before Woodland was on the map. Hear colorful and touching stories of

Yolo County’s pioneers, farmers, soldiers, politicians, builders, teachers, children and firemen whose lives and accomplishments are brought back to life through Barbara’s careful research and storytelling. Stroll through this peaceful outdoor museum, park and resting ground which has served the community since the first burial in 1850.

Today, most visitors are alarmed at the unusual name of the passage, but personal tales of “The Alley” bring its history to life. In 1853 Henry Wyckoff built a small store on the southeast corner of what is now First Street and Dead Cat Alley.

The Tai Lee Laundry and the Din family later occupied the same building. 2019 Strollers will spend an hour to see how the commercial district grew from that corner and hear about happenings in the alley and Old Woodland. The tour will include 666 Dead Cat Alley, Woodland’s first post office and the Strand Theatre — “Woodland’s Photo-Play House De Luxe” — the Porter family influences in downtown, the city’s original railroad site, the Roth buildings and China

Town, behind the Chicago Cafe, one of the oldest restaurants in California.

Today Woodland is a classic Main Street town and a slice of Americana, with many outstanding well-preserved historic buildings and others undergoing renovation by bold and enterprising owners. The entire downtown is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Yet downtown is not static or frozen in time, its architecture and culture — spanning 160 years — is evolving with new buildings underway or breaking ground whose designs speak to the 21st century while complementing Woodland’s historic buildings.

This tour will begin at Freeman Park, named by the city to honor town founder Frank Freeman when it was developed in 1925. We will “map” the location of Free-

man’s “Yolo City” store and the first school using government land maps from 1858, then follow the survey map along Main Street — originally named South Street when Freeman mapped Woodland in 1863. Strollers will then walk a few blocks to the core downtown observing historic buildings — many designed in the popular Spanish Eclectic style which swept California in the early part of the 20th century. Developer Dave Snow will discuss the new highdensity housing project at Third and Lincoln, and a similar project being planned on the west side of downtown. We will stroll by stone buildings and learn their fascinating stories, and explore in detail the Victorian iron storefronts — including those recently uncovered and restored to colorful brilliance after years of being bur-

ied beneath outdated architecture.

See up close the newly-renovated Meyer Building — which preserves art deco architecture from the ‘20s — and learn about the rebirth of the Winne Building, a fourplex built in 1904 by Civil War veteran William Winne and saved from the wrecking ball by a local developer Ron Caceres whose work adds more unique housing downtown.

Don’t miss this exciting tour as we learn first-hand how Downtown Woodland first began long ago and how it is reinventing itself as a cool and distinctive destination spot for locals and visitors alike.

Vidales wins Ryan Award

Enterprise staff Pioneer High School graduate Miguel Alonso created the winning entry of the Ryan Award Poster Contest.

Alonso painted the home of Dawn Brown and Keith Underwood home at 709 West Keystone St., one of five featured homes on the Stroll Through History Open Homes tour.

Woodland High School junior Katya Gonzalez and graduate Jasmin Lopez were second- and thirdplace winners, respectively.

Senior Shelsey Estrada placed fourth.

Cash prizes of $500, $250, $100 and $50, respectively, were awarded

to the students.

Judging was based on the extent to which the poster and graphic art design has overall visual appeal as a 17-by-11-inch poster, enhances the historic theme of the Woodland Stroll Through History, and is adaptable for tickets, brochures, website and other advertising.

Each contestant was a student enrolled in any artrelated class of enrolled at Woodland High School or Pioneer High School during the academic year. The contest was sponsored by the Stroll Through History Committee.

Artist Marianne Ryan was one of the early planners and participants of the Stroll Through History.

She began the Stroll Poster Contest as a way to showcase the talents of the young artists at our local high schools. In recognition of her work, and to honor her memory, the Stroll Board voted unanimously to name the poster contest “The Ryan Awards.”
